Judges Named for 2018 Eisner Awards Six Comics Experts Make Up Nominating Committee

Comic-Con International is proud to announce that the judging panel has been named for the 2018 Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards. This blue-ribbon committee will select the nominations to appear on the Eisner Awards ballot. This year's judges are:

Candice Mack
Candice Mack is the manager of systemwide Young Adult Services at the Los Angeles Public Library, where she helps coordinate teen programs and collections at the third largest library system in the United States. She was the president of the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) in 2015-2016 and served as the chair of YALSA's Great Graphic Novels for Teens Committee (the fifth chair since the committee's inception and the first chair of Asian American descent) in 2010-2011.  She has reviewed graphic novels and young adult literature for the American Library Association's Booklist journal since 2011. More recently, Candice has worked with San Diego Comic-Con and San Diego Public Library to help moderate, present at, and organize panels for the Comic Conference for Educators and Librarians.

Graeme McMillan

His work has appeared in The Los Angeles Times, Time, io9, Comics Alliance, CBR.com, and Newsarama, among other outlets, and he's half of the comic book podcast Wait, What? After graduating from Grays School of Art in Aberdeen, Scotland, with an MA in art & design, he worked as a teacher, graphic designer, and call center manager before finding his niche in journalism.

Tate Ottati
In 1993, Tate Ottati opened his first comics store in Lauderhill, Florida, at the tender age of 17. Today Tate and his family operate an over 10,000-square-foot comic shop, a separate 2,000-square-foot tabletop gaming shop, an art gallery + boutique, and a second smaller comic shop 45 minutes north of the main location. Hosting multiple annual events every year and offering a hugely diverse selection of products has made his business something special to the community and brought him the 2009 Will Eisner Spirit of Comics Retailer Award.

Nhora Serrano
Nhora Lucía Serrano is a visiting assistant professor of Comparative Literature at Hamilton College in Clinton, NY. Originally from Colombia, she has always been passionate about the interplay between image and word in newspaper strips, editorial cartoons, and the book arts in the Anglophone world and Latin America. Serrano is treasurer of the Comics Studies Society and serves on the MLA Executive Forum on Comics and Graphic Narratives. Serrano is also the recent recipient of a Special Collections fellowship at Hamilton, where she is studying the George Cruikshank collection as well as Gus Arriola’s Gordo. An author of several visual studies articles and encyclopedia entries, Serrano’s edited anthology Immigrants and Comics: Graphic Spaces of Remembrance, Transaction, and Mimesis (Routledge) will be published in 2018.

William F. Wilson
Bill Wilson’s first Comic-Con was 1971. After being an attendee for many years, he became a member of the Cartoon/Fantasy Organization, which showed Japanese animation to enthralled audiences at the 1980 Comic-Con. He eventually became president of the Los Angeles chapter. In 1985 and 1986 Bill put together evening anime programs at the Con, and he worked with Japanese businesses to sell at Comic-Con and introduced American distributors to the imports. In 1985, he was chair of the second Comic Book Expo, Comic-Con’s industry trade show. After that he worked in the Registration department for several years, and In 1991 he organized one of the first LGBT events held during Comic-Con. For the last few years he has been in charge of the Eisner Awards nominee display in the Art Show.

The judges will meet in San Diego in April to select the nominees that will be placed on the Eisner Awards ballot. The nominees will then be voted on by professionals in the comic book industry, and the results will be announced in a gala awards ceremony on Friday, July 20 at Comic-Con in San Diego. Guidelines for submitting material for the judges will be announced on the Comic-Con website in early January. The deadline for submitting nominations is March 16. If you’re like us, Wednesday is your favorite day of the week! It’s “New Comics Day,” the day all the new comics come out across this great land of ours (and around the world, too), and while it’s not an official holiday, we’re certainly up for making it one! If you take part in this weekly journey to comic book heaven, you probably have a favorite store you visit. If so, consider nominating that store for the comic industry’s most prestigious retail award: The Will Eisner Spirit of Comics Retailer Award!

Each year Comic-Con International honors retailers from around the globe with this award, named after the visionary creator of The Spirit. When Will approached Comic-Con about initiating the award in the early 1990s, he wanted to do so as a way to acknowledge the important role that comics retailers play in the industry, nurturing the relationship between creators and their readers. The comic book retailer provides that vital link in getting the work from the creators and publishers to the public. Will recognized the importance of that link, and Comic-Con continues to recognize it over 20 years after Will’s original idea. In fact, 2018 marks the 25th anniversary of the Spirit Award!

The Award is given out yearly to retailers who have done an outstanding job of supporting the comic art medium both in the industry at large and in their local community. Comics fans around the world have the opportunity to nominate their favorite stores here on the Comic-Con International website. The 2018 Award will be given out as part of the Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards on Friday evening, July 20, 2018 at Comic-Con.

You can nominate your favorite store! Click here to read the nomination guidelines and to access our online nomination form or download our nomination PDF. The deadline for nominations is April 6, 2018, so hurry and get your favorite store nominated now!

I am always surprised how many of the nominees I had never heard of. (Which is a good thing, more books to check out.) And hey, multiple nominations for a Flintstones series? Nice :)

3. A sample of the artist’s work must be included.

4. A sample of the artist’s pencil work should be submitted if it was inked by another artist.

5. If multiple names are credited to the work, what the artist contributed must be made clear.

6. If selected as a nominee, the artist (or publisher) should be prepared to provide 25 copies of the work to be sent to the judges.

7. Those who entered last year may enter again this year if they still meet the criteria.

All submissions will be reviewed by a panel of representatives from Comic-Con and the comics community, who will select the five finalists. The winner will be then selected by a blue ribbon panel of comics professionals, including prior Russ Manning winners and Russ Manning’s former assistants.

The top winners at the 30th Annual Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards, held July 20 at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront, were the ongoing Image series Monstress by Marjorie Liu and Sana Takeda and the debut graphic novel My Favorite Thing Is Monsters by Emil Ferris (Fantagraphics). Monstress was awarded Best Continuing Series, Best Publication for Teens, Best Writer (for Liu), Best Painter, and Best Cover Artist (both for Takeda). Liu was on hand to accept all the awards, and Takeda joined her by cell phone to thank the voters on the final category. In accepting the awards for Best Writer/Artist, Best Coloring, and Best Graphic Album–New, Ferris revealed the ordeals she had to overcome to produce this major work.

Multiple Eisners also went to Katie O’Neill’s Tea Dragon Society (Best Publication for Kids, Best Webcomic; Oni Press), Tom King and Mitch Gerads’s Mister Miracle (Best Writer, Best Penciller/Inker; DC Comics), and Akira 35th Anniversary Edition, by Katsuhiro Otomo (Best Archival Publication–Comics, Best Publication Design; Kodansha).

Awesome to see Emil Ferris, Marjorie Liu and Sana Takeda getting so much recognition. The Black Bolt series and Tom King as well. The Elmer Fudd/Batman crossover is my favorite single issue this year.
