Title: Mr. Robot Offsite
Post by: Transmute Jun on July 10, 2017, 02:28:20 PM
For those of you, like me, who were disappointed that there is no Mr. Robot panel, there is a Mr. Robot offsite...

http://sdccblog.com/2017/07/visit-the-world-of-mr-robot-at-san-diego-comic-con/

Quote
Thursday, July 20 — Saturday, July 22 from 11AM-7PM, or Sunday, July 23 from 11AM-4PM, fans can stop by E Corp’s Bank of E (327 4th Avenue between J Street and Island Avenue) to receive their own E Corp card, loaded with E Coin cryptocurrency.
The E Corp card, which can also be opened online at e-coin.com, can be used throughout San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter for food, drinks and other surprises at participating retailers (TBA). Best of all? You can also visit the show’s infamous Red Wheelbarrow BBQ, located next door to the Bank of E, and present your E Corp card for a BBQ meal.

Really curious about this promotion and what vendors are part of this.

Also, YAS for free BBQ.

And just so they know what's what, you're going to stop by the E Bank and give them a piece of your mind while you pick up some e-coin and BBQ, right? ;)

I totally saw it and went there, but didn't want to comment on it. Some forums (not this one) would probably not take it too lightly. I'm used to just laughing inside and then saying nothing when I see funny posts like that one ;)

Tell me about it.  I was giving a speech to a bunch of college students the other day and I was mid way through when I pulled back into my head Inside Out style and thought,  "Look how YOUNG these kids are!  I'm like a THOUSAND years old!"

Then I got the Negasonic Deadpool quote in my head, "f*, you're old!"

Yup, auto bleep still works.  :)

I'm totally unsure what this offsite will be.  Will it be like last year where they had a set?  That was totally cool.  After seeing the apt on the show so many times, standing in it was a great experience.  I can't remember there being a bank set used widely in the show.  Or will it just be a kiosk where they hand out e-cards?

Also, are they saying we get free BBQ if we show our e-cards?  I'm all for free food.

I was thinking the same thing. I wonder why there was a delay.  I was worried there wouldn't be much, but within the past couple days we've gotten this, Westworld, and Legion (and others lol but those are the ones I'm interested in).

Just think of it like standing in the GOT offsite line. ;)

I waited for 30 minutes and then some guy in the line discovered we could call one of the Mr. Robot Ubers, so we called it to the line and it picked us up there  :P

I was so happy later when I heard how long people were waiting!   It was kind of weird being driven to some unknown location with a total stranger in a van though.

It wasn't the same experience. While I was standing in the line, the workers told us the same. To call uber and get the same VR experience. That was what was the same. You got to watch the same VR short except in the back of a van instead of the recreated set of Elliot's apartment. Of course, you also did get the free t-shirt. The thing is, I had absolutely no interested in the VR short. I could watch that at home. The only draw for me was to wander around in Eliot's apartment. I did watch part of the VR short to complete that part of it but I then spent my time wandering around checking out the apt. They said I could rummage through drawers and cabinets so I did. When my time was up I went to leave and the dude at the door asked if I was done. I said no but my time is up. He said I could stick around a bit longer if I wanted. I did.

So for me, taking the van would have missed the experience. If all you wanted was to watch the VR short and get a t-shirt though, it was definitely the time saving way to go.

6 hours in line? That's insane. When did you go?

Yeah, rummaging thru the computer parts and his apartment were kewl, but i was really interested in the VR. It was a lil wierd to sit on the bed with a bunch of strangers and "plug in", lol. I went early morn/afternoon, i cant remember what time i got out, maybe 5pm er so? I wouldve loved to experience it without all the other ppl around.

Actually, I have seen a lot of homeless and low income people at the offsites. I think they know to cone around for freebies and free food. I remember the year they had the Homer Head on the Bayfront lawn, I saw a low income family very excited by the free backpacks they had received.

I have no doubt that they will be. As the other poster said, the homeless do partake of the offsites. Last year not as many did but I attribute that to SDCC happening around the same time as stand down so there wasn't as much need.

LOL-it looks like Mr Robot invaded hacked another thread momentarily because he wasn't getting enough love on his own thread.

I may try to get into the offsite this year. However, the SXSW offsite was the best. Free t-shirts printed on-site and barely any lines for anything (granted, we went early-right as it opened).

I have been stalking the e-coin site. I am curious to see if there is any advantage to signing up for the card online, and how that will work.

Well, sounds like that wasn't the same experience we got in the van either.  They picked us up, drove us to an undisclosed location, and gave very very little info.  It was great and pretty exciting.   The VR thing was fun, and then we did get a shirt and water bottles which was nice.

I mean, opening cabinets on a show set sounds interesting too, but not fun enough to justify 3.5 more hours of my convention time.  I also would have never known about the Wonder Woman offsite had I not been dropped off near there by the Mr.Robot van, and I ended up getting pictures and Super Hero Girls capes for my kids while the people behind us in the Mr.Robot line would have still had a couple of hours of waiting.   I don't feel like I missed out  ;)

For me, it's more than just looking through the set that one time. Now that I've been there, it changes watching the show for me. I have a visceral experience when I watch scenes in Elliot's apartment now. It's a place I've been.

I guess we just have different experiences. I sought out that Wonder Woman offsite. Took a while since it was further away than usual for an offsite and I had to look around for it. A few seconds after I got there, I thought "What a waste of time." I considered getting a photo in the plane but there was a short line and I didn't think it was worth it. I didn't know that you got to keep the cap though. That I would have gone for. I'm a sucker for free stuff.

I still have 2 of those Mr. Robot water bottles unopened. They just kept giving them out in line, I kept accepting them. Ended up not drinking them all. I also have 5 of the Mr. Robot masks. Same reason.

I second that! We actually did both the offsite and the uber ride (on different days) and my daughter enjoyed the offsite more. I didn't get to ride the uber since it was 4 max and we had 5 people. The offsite was awesome, they encouraged us to poke through all the cabinets and said most people just did the VR and left. The woman i talked to was pretty disappointed about that!

Loved the masks, my daughter and her friend used the masks and were fsociety for Halloween. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170715/c883017dba4b58073e33f4a491bbf78e.jpg)

To everyone who went to the Mr. Robot offsite last year, this year it's at the same spot or very close to it. Same street definitely. Not sure if it's the same exact storefront.

Lots of food you can get for your 20 ecoin. Unless the burger lounge burger is something special for Mr. Robot, their burgers are not cheap.

Absoloutely no reason to stand in the main mr. robot line. I stood in it for 2.5 hours this early afternoon. The only thing you get above and beyond signing up online is a lanyard and the physical card. You don' t even need to stand in the ling line for that. There's a satellite kiosk where you can the same with a much shorter line. I think the word leaked since late this afternoon the main site line was much shorter. The line for food is basically nonexistant. Just sign up online.

Walked by 20 mins before closing. No line at all. The lounge burger is their regular $9 burger. Save some ecoins for that.

This is such a great offsite! Sign up for the e coin online (no need to wait in that long line, just use your phone), get the BBQ food for free, and then get free food at other restaurants.  I got the tee, a drink and cookie at the Cat Cafe, and a post-Conan slice of pizza today, and still have 5 e coin to use tomorrow.  Ghiradelli maybe??

We lucked out and got the card and lanyard at the satellite location outside the Hard Rock. The card is easier to use. DH had trouble getting the code to come up on his phone at the tee place. I used the card because of that. We really wanted the physical card, so were happy that we lucked into it.

OK, now that it's all over. The Mr. Robot offsite was more than the E-bank window and the BBQ restaurant next door. That was effectively just the swag portion. There was also an experience portion. Starting at the BBQ restaurant, they left clues about how to get there. You got a phone number to call to setup an appointment and got to live a scene from Mr. Robot. Pretty cool. I was so wound up to look for clues though, that all during the scene I kept focusing on looking around for more clues instead of just enjoying it. I guess that was also part of it.

My daughter solved the puzzle and took me as her +1.  There was another woman at the same time as us, so 3 of us total.

We waited at a street corner and a man came and led us to the door to the right of the BBQ place.  We entered and walked down the hall to a small dark room.  There was a desk with an old computer and a red rotary dial phone, with a masked person at the table who asked us questions and typed in our answers.  "How old were you when you realized you are alone."  "Are you afraid of the dark."  "What is someone in darkness looking for."  Something like that, anyway  :P  Then the lights came on and there was a fish tank to our right, and on the wall behind the desk there was graffiti on the wall (in black light).  The light goes out and the red phone rang, and my daughter answered.  It was a strange whispery voice talking about E-Corp and its president and giving hints about next season. Then we were given a manila envelope with photos and given 30 seconds to examine them before they were taken back.  Then we were escorted out.

It was weird and cool.  But we couldn't figure it out.

So this is how I think the scavenger hunt should have gone. I didn't go in this strict order.

I doubled spoilered it just in case people are still noodling it or rather live in magical bliss not knowing. I don't think they will do this same puzzle other places. I've never heard of Mr. Robot doing the same thing twice. Last year people thought they would bring the SXSW ferris wheel to SDCC. They didn't.

Dude, I kept telling everyone I could about getting free food using e-coin. Most people thought I was scamming them. They would bring up the website and then stop. I said to go ahead and sign up. They said they would do it later.

The best deals to use e-coin on were the $9 Burger Lounge burger. Those "sold out". And the $12 Ghiradelli hot fudge sundae. The other food options were a step down.

They must have changed that policy at some point. When I tried there they were out of meatballs for subs which was the offer on the e-coin website. So he said the 5 e-coin would be used as a $5 discount and then we would pay the difference. The next cheapest sub I saw was $7 or $8. So I went and got a slice of bad pizza instead. Hey, free is free.

EXACTLY! I commented on that earlier. I was too wound up looking for more clues to actually enjoy it. I was hoping to get a t-shirt out of it. I have every comic-con Mr. Robot t-shirt so I was hoping to get this year's version. The Red Wheelbarrow one just isn't the same.

Every action has an equal, opposite reaction.
John Adams shat the bed. I love the guy, but he's in traction.
Poor Alexander Hamilton? He is missing in action.
So now I'm facing Aaron Burr, with his own faction.
