While I’m glad Javitz is taking proper measures I assume NYCC is just waiting for whatever they need to get the insurance money to cancel. No badge sale yet and moving back the press notification a month are bad signs.

All large events have been canceled through the end of September. I imagine this will be, too, they're just waiting to announce it. I wish they'd just get it over with.

I'd be very surprised if they get insurance money.  Very surprised.

I sit in on my Homeowner Association meetings, and one of the reasons the decision was made NOT to open our pool is because our insurance company made it clear there was no coverage around this pandemic.

Yeah, the consensus seems to be that insurance doesn’t cover cancellations due to pandemic. I think that they’re still waiting to be forced to cancel, but not for insurance...more like to get released from obligations. I.e. if they put a huge deposit down, they may have to still pay it if they cancel themselves, but they probably won’t have to pay it if the city forces them to cancel.

In an interview, a CCI representative said that insurance was a consideration in deciding when to officially cancel comic-con 2020.

Edit: I misremembered the source, my clarification is 2 posts down.

Do you remember if they said they were getting some kind of insurance payment.

I remembered wrong.  It was not said by a CCI rep in an interview.  It was discussed in emails that were obtained by a newspaper.  Here is all it says about insurance.

"Emails obtained by Voice of San Diego from the San Diego Convention Center under the California Public Records Act show talks about permits and insurance for San Diego Comic-Con were ongoing through the end of March and early April."

The announcement you were expecting:

To our NYCC family,

New York Comic Con is more than just a singular event that happens in the city in October. For many, it starts with an eagerly anticipated countdown of days to the show, for others it starts with announcements. The energy always reaches beyond the event itself, seeping into unsuspecting New Yorkers who spot Spider-Man and Wonder Woman on their morning commutes or Goku casually strolling up 34th Street before it suddenly dawns on them: it’s October again and New York Comic Con’s back in town. Here at ReedPop, NYCC is year-round: the conclusion of one show coincides with the beginning of the next.

Since 2006, we’ve been assembling this annual celebration of incredibly enthusiastic individuals that make up our wonderful community and gathering them in the pop culture capital of the world, our own Gotham City. NYCC not only supports the growth of small and local businesses and creators, big brands and major studios, but also brings together diverse, passionate fans from around the world for one incredibly jam-packed long weekend with tens of thousands of your closest friends.

While we’d much rather be giving you an update today on badges going on sale, it likely comes as no surprise that New York Comic Con 2020’s physical event at the Javits Center will not be able to run as intended. We very sincerely appreciate your patience as we worked with the Javits and local officials to figure out what, if anything, could go on as planned this October.

NYCC doesn’t stop just because we can’t do what we’ve done in the past. Instead, we look to the future: We may not be meeting in the queue hall each morning, but we’re excited to join forces with our sister event, MCM Comic Con in London, to bring you New York Comic Con's Metaverse, our new online portal dedicated to delivering pop culture experiences, right into your homes NYCC weekend, October 8-11. We are partnering with YouTube to bring to life four days of incredible content from the biggest studios, publishers and creators in the business. This is your chance to interact with your favorite creators and celebrity guests, and most importantly, the opportunity to engage with other members of this vibrant community of ours. Metaverse October guest announcements, exhibitor profiles, and other information will be available at findthemetaverse.com.

We can’t thank you enough for how supportive and understanding you’ve all been as we’ve cancelled nearly all our ReedPop events this year. It’s been amazing to see the community turn out, time and time again, in support of our exhibitors and creators. The loss of virtually all conventions in 2020 has leveled a devastating blow on their businesses. We ask that you continue to support them, and we will be bringing new opportunities and platforms that will make it even easier for you to shop their products and artwork straight from your home.

If you’re anything like us and you can’t wait until October to get your fix of great pop culture content, we invite you to join our pals at Emerald City Comic Con, Keystone Comic Con, Florida Supercon, and MCM Comic Con Manchester for ReedPop’s first Metaverse event being held August 13-16. We’ve been rolling out announcements, including a spotlight with George Miller on Mad Max: Fury Road, live drawing with Junji Ito and engaging panels with comic creators like Scott Snyder, Greg Capullo, Marguerite Bennett and Khary Randolph.

While we won’t be able to geek out with each other in person this year, we’re working hard to make sure Metaverse August and October will deliver unique experiences to help fill some of the longing we all have to get back to a convention. We miss shows just as much as you do and we’re doing everything we can to make sure that when it is safe for us to be together again, you’ll have the same amazing experience you’ve come to expect from NYCC.

Stay safe, stay nerdy, and remember: NYCC fans wore masks before it was cool.
Your friends at New York Comic Con and ReedPop

The writing was on the wall for this, but it's nice to finally get a confirmation. The Reedpop Metaverse event this weekend (Aug 13-16) is offering virtual meet-and-greets and personalized recorded video messages in addition to scheduled free panels.

Today, ReedPop - the world’s leading producer of pop culture events  - announced that New York Comic Con’s physical event at Javits Center will not take place as intended in 2020, and that they are officially partnering with YouTube on an all-digital event that will bring the excitement, community, and incredible content expected from NYCC directly to fans around the world.

From October 8-11, the New York Comic Con YouTube channel will exclusively live stream panels from leading entertainment brands. Starz will bring the epic American Gods, CBS All Access will feature the legendary Star TrekUniverse, DreamWorks Animation will showcase the best of television animation, and Hulu & FX will add to the slate of exciting programming for fans worldwide. More news will be made in the coming weeks about content including premieres, announcements, fan contests and more.

“We are thoroughly disappointed that we can’t gather together, in-person for the New York Comic Con we love to build and our fans love to revel in. We look forward to this weekend all year long, just like you, and with this being our 15th edition, we were particularly excited. I will miss walking up and down artist alley and seeing friends that I’ve made since we were in the basement at the Javits Center,” said Lance Fensterman, President of ReedPop. “While this year will definitely be a different experience, we are going to look to bring the best and most engaging event to our fans, exhibitors, and studios through our partnership with YouTube.”

In addition to the panels streaming live & on-demand exclusively via YouTube, fans will be able to participate in talent Q&A’s during panels, turn every panel into a watch party and geek out with other fans using YouTube’s Community and Live Chat features.

ReedPop will also give fans the opportunity for experiences that will get them up-close and personal with meet & greets, live Q&As, personalized autographs, videos, and professional workshops. And while fans won’t be able to stroll the Show Floor and Artist Alley aisles at Javits this year, ReedPop is creating a virtual marketplace for fans to explore where exhibitors and creators will share their newest items. There will be more information on these exciting fan developments unveiled in the coming weeks.

Leading up to New York Comic Con’s Metaverse in October, ReedPop will be hosting Metaverse August from August 13-16 and give fans the ability to assemble together for one-of-a-kind virtual experiences with celebrities and creators, discover new releases, explore a marketplace, and access exclusive merchandise.

New York Comic Con is the ultimate pop culture destination event in the United States. NYCC brings the best of comics, television, film, exhibitors, celebrities, cosplay, anime, and more to create memorable, uniquely exciting experiences for fans. These experiences transcend beyond the walls of the Javits Center and continue to live beyond the weekend of NYCC through the online world of ReedPOP digital content.
