Will Eisner believed that artistic freedom—in his own work and that of other cartoonists—was of utmost importance. He was an early member of the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund. Eisner lived through the controversies over comics of the ’40, and ’50s, and until his 2005 death made use of the new freedoms for his own graphic novel work. With the current controversies over graphic novels in schools just the latest in the decades-long battle over free speech vs. community standards, comics historians and creators including Jeff Smith (Bone) , Denis Kitchen (founder , Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, Kitchen Sink Press) , Jeff Trexler (acting director, Comic Book Legal Defense Fund), and Michael Dooley (The Education of a Comics Artist) discuss comics censorship over the decades and what we can learn from Eisner’s career and work to help deal with these latest challenges. Dedicated comics studies programs are few and far between; even more rare is a slate of comics courses that explores the power of comics to engage with social justice issues. From San Diego State University, Elizabeth Pollard, Pamela Jackson, Jess Whatcott, and Gregory Daddis discuss the process of building a complete comics and social justice curriculum from the ground up. Building upon SDSU’s foundation of existing comics courses, faculty are preparing courses across the curriculum on such topics as ChicanX comics, Native Americans in comics, African Americans in comics, the visual rhetoric of comics, comics for teachers, and more. Panelists will share their process (including the curriculum mapping process), the library’s support for new classes, the program’s public-facing deliverables and dissemination plan, and examples of two of the courses under development.

Women in film also know in addition to directing, producing, writing, and even show running their projects allows their visions to stay intact and their voices to be heard. These women are building stellar reputations and becoming more and more in demand, which also helps aspiring female filmmakers to get hired and rise in stature. Noted attorney Michael Lovitz (author of the classic The Trademark and Copyright Book comic book) hosts IP attorneys David Branfman,David Lizerbram, and Larry Zerner and law professor Betsy Rosenblatt for a rousing discussion focused on real-world issues of importance to fans and creators. This year’s topics are expected to include: streaming concerns in the role-playing game space; copyright termination updates, including cases involving the Friday the 13th franchise and Top Gun; and when and how fan club activities cross the line from fan celebrations to infringement, and the blurry line in-between. Professional game developers offer their advice and insight to those seeking to further their dreams of making their game a reality. Participants will have the opportunity to pitch a game for 3 to 5 minutes and then receive constructive criticism on the concept and the pitch. This session will be seated on a first-come, first-served basis, and sign-ups will be taken on site for the six pitch slots. To participate in the Game Pitch Review, you must be prepared before you sign up. Preparation includes: (1) A well-practiced, 3- to 5-minute verbal pitch that clearly explains the game concept, how it’s unique to the marketplace, why it would be worth funding, etc.; (2) any hardcopy or digital visuals (images, video, etc.) that help illustrate the concept and viability of the idea (you must bring the device on which you will display the visuals); (3) being imaginative and passionate—imagine you’re making a very quick pitch to receive funding for your idea. In 1992 Jim Lee, the superstar artist responsible for X-Men, formed WildStorm Productions, a ground-breaking company that would go on to produce bestsellers like WildC.A.T.s, Deathblow, Stormwatch, the Cliffhanger Line of books (Danger Girl, Battle Chasers), Alan Moore's America's Best Comics (League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Tom Strong), Planetary, The Authority, and so many others. Jim, along with his longtime collaborators Scott Williams and Alex Sinclair, Gen13 creator J. Scott Campbell, company president John Nee, and editor-in-chief Scott Dunbier (and maybe a surprise or two) relate funny anecdotes and share details about the early days of the "Camelot" of comic book studios.

Hemingway in Comics, the book and the exhibit on preview now at the Comic-Con Museum, is an exploration of what it means to be a pop culture icon and how that image can change over time. Hemingway has appeared in 120+ comics alongside Superman, Mickey Mouse, and Captain Marvel—he even fought fascists with Wolverine. Panelists include Robert K. Elder (Hemingway in Comics), Elliot S! Maggin (Superman, Action Comics), Zander Cannon (Kaijumax, Smax), Eric Peterson (Jesus Christ: In the Name of the Gun), and Dr. Emily Schindler, director of education at the Comic-Con Museum.

Before they were famous, Ray Bradbury, Forry Ackerman, and Ray Harryhausen were three boys who saw movies together, traded magazines, and rode the red car all over L.A. Their friendship lasted over 60 years and helped elevate each other's careers and the world of science fiction. Orty Ortwein, docent for the Ray Bradbury Experience Museum, will talk about how this friendship helped create fan culture. From their meeting as members of the L.A. Science Fantasy Society to their intersecting careers as professionals to their appearances at Comic-Con San Diego, even life-long fans of these men are bound to learn something new.

Ever wonder what goes into creating pulse-pounding action music, emotional character themes, or lush adventurous soundscapes? This panel pairs composers with their directors and collaborators to discuss what creative thinking and conversations happen behind the scenes to develop music for fan-favorite projects in Film, Television and Video Games. Panelists include composer Hesham Nazih, head of music at Marvel Studios Dave Jordan (Moon Knight), composer Benjamin Wallfisch, and director Simon McQuoid (Mortal Kombat). The panel will be moderated by BMI’s Alex Flores and White Bear PR’s Chandler Poling.

Angela Rain Kim (University of Massachusetts Amherst) examines the extra-linguistic narrative techniques of Keum Suk Gendry-Kim’s Grass as an avenue for giving voice to the formerly “unspeakable” historic trauma of sexually enslaved Korean “comfort women” during World War II. Nataliya Kostenko (University of Massachusetts Amherst) uses Art Spiegelman’s Maus, GB Tran’s Vietnamerica, and Shaun Tan’s The Arrival to demonstrate the ongoing relationship between comics and the portrayal of refugee and immigrant familial trauma, post-memory, assimilation, and generational conflict. Desmond Hassing (San Diego State University) argues the peritexts in Golden Age DC and other comics were as important as the comics stories in constructing Western Settler identity and the traits and lessons readers should claim as the perceived heritage from Indigenous Peoples. Dwain C. Pruitt (Wofford College) examines the commitment and rare challenges to middle-class Black respectability politics in African American comics in the Golden Age.

In addition, they also raise the opportunities for discussions among minorities, women as scientists, and navigating equality within the fight for good versus evil. The best offense is a good defense. Bans and challenges of comics are on the rise, as are media attacks and campaigns against the format we love and cherish. These attacks aren’t just happening in libraries and schools – retailers have also felt the sting of censorship. Representatives from the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund discusses ways that the comics community can avoid some of the pitfalls and your rights as comics fans and retailers when challenges arise.

Hidetaka Tenjin shares his journey of rising through the ranks of some of the most famous anime and sci-fi fandoms to becoming a renowned professional in Japan and overseas. Mostly known for his Gundam, Macross, and Star Wars illustrations, Tenjin will also discuss his professional voice acting work and how he's an active member of the 501st Japanese Garrison. This is Tenjin's first-ever San Diego Comic-Con as a guest and an attendee, so he's very excited to showcase some of his works, and most of all, meet other fans like himself.
