Mid-century romance and girls’ comics such as Young Romance, Betty and Veronica, and Millie the Model were often sexist in their caricatures of young women, their lives, and their supposed incurable obsession with boys. However, this roundtable investigates how these comics also included other, fashion-focused elements that stimulated reader identification, which led to women-friendly, empowering comics such as Trina Robbins’s Misty and California Girls. Trina Robbins (independent scholar), Sydney Heifler (The Ohio State University), and Michael Dooley (Art Center College of Design) showcase of a variety of fashion comic features such as paper dolls, advice articles, and reader illustrations, exploring how young women were able to find more empowering messages that meaningfully connected to their personal, subjective experiences beyond simple, chauvinistic clichés, and analyzing the ways in which fashions in comic books from the mid-century and beyond connect with and amplify the cultures and politics of the times.
