LET'S DO THIS!!!! :)

Wait what?! I was just lamenting to a friend wondering if Comic Con would return this year! I shall continue to cross my fingers.
-
I am hearing vendors are getting confirmation of their booths, sounds promising.

Yeah I've seen on Twitter both artists (like Patrick Ballesteros) and companies (Toddland) posting they're confirmed that their 2020 roll-over is good to go. Looking at current COVID numbers starting to plummet, I think Comic-Con 2022 is in good shape.
Also weird to think: the last Comic-Con Marvel panel had Chadwick Boseman on stage hyping BLACK PANTHER sequel :(

They have gone down before....we just have to hope for no more major variants/waves. I so want it to be summer in San Diego again....but with no Hotel Lottery info yet it seems even SDCC is waiting for a better forecast.
-
They have gone done before....we just have to hope for no more major variants/waves.
I don't think it matters anymore at a societal level. It happens during every pandemic. People are just over it. Unless we need to step over bodies while shopping at the grocery store, I don't think we will see closures either mandated by the government or by corporations. The omicron surge we are hopefully on the other side of was worst than any surge before it by a wide margin, yet the response from the government and by society as a whole has been pretty muted. It's the lowest response we've gotten of any surge. That trend will continue. For example, Denmark didn't just drop all restrictions they declared covid over. They declared it no longer a threat to society. This while they also are in the midst of their biggest surge ever.
Personally, I'll be wearing a mask at the next comic-con. Now that it's acceptable in public in the US, I'll wear one just because I don't want to catch a cold. But I think there will be a next comic-con.

I think you're completely right about all of this, although I don't think it's the wisest course for society. But we can't do anything about that on an individual level.
However, I also think CCI has shown itself to be *more cautious* as an organization than most (not just about the coronavirus, but in general), so I'm somewhat unsurprised that they're still holding off on Wondercon/hotel sale/etc announcements. Fingers crossed we get some information soon.
-
If this pandemic has showed us anything is that we should probably be wearing masks in large crowds anyway and especially while sick. We were literally ok with getting Con Flu for a long time there. I was lucky enough not to get it but will still be way more diligent about hand washing and will be wearing a N95 inside the convention center.

If you are sick, shouldn't you be staying home?
In an ideal world, sure. But people often have to go to work or get fired, or absolutely need to go somewhere for some other reason. Also, not every cold (or is it an allergy/hayfever? who knows?) you get is going to kill other people if they get it, and staying home 100% of the time for 3-5 days until you're reasonably sure (but still basically just guessing) you're no longer contagious is pretty unfeasible for most people.
Masking when you've got minor symptoms seems much more realistic and doable.

If you are sick ...STAY HOME!
-
If you are sick, shouldn't you be staying home?
I'm old enough to remember that if you stayed home just because you had the sniffles, you were considered a slacker. It is absolutely what people should do. Even before covid. But as has already been pointed out, not everyone has that luxury. Many people would get fired for taking a few days off. A small business owner gets no sick days. They don't have a choice.
-
If you are sick, shouldn't you be staying home?
In a perfect world? Of course. In this case, plenty of folks spent hundreds on badges, a grand on airfare, and thousands on hotel. With so many "must see/must buy/must experience" things at SDCC, I can see why people would say 'damn the flu' or whatever and push themselves to attend. I've never gotten 'Con Crud' but as I've gotten older I've definitely pushed myself through aches, pains, allergies, stomach issues, etc. to attend. None of those are contagious, of course, and if I were legit sick I'd absolutely stay away from a crowd (caveat, I live about 20 mins. from downtown San Diego & have attend the last 20 SDCC's so that's an easier decision for me than for, say, someone who flies to Comic-Con from The Philippines for their one-and-only SDCC).
-

Go work in oil and gas, that is still the mentality, though I think it's changing to if you are sick you still have to work just from home.
@MarvelGurl (https://www.friendsofcc.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=2500) and @perc2100 (https://www.friendsofcc.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=380) In a perfect world we would have no covid ;D I agree with both of you though, our work society isn't set up to allow people the time off to get better and the rest of society isn't going to give you your vacation money back because you got sick.
-

Yes, I believe this is what they do in a lot of asian countries specifically Japan and China. Someone who is from those areas and/or culture can correct me if I'm wrong but they were diligent about mask wearing during cold/flu season, in large crowds and if they were sick because the show must go on. I always admired that for years before COVID. They also have as bad as a workaholic mindset as we do in America, if not worse, so there's that.

@Michael M (https://www.friendsofcc.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=2539)
what official announcement?
-
Was waiting for this official announcement, and just got my flight today. Bring on Hotelpocalypse!!
Since I don't know what you mean I went looking for announcements, but found someone on twitter who asked for good luck with "exhibitor hotel reg this week". The tweet was on 1/31. Is this right, they're starting to book the hotel rooms for exhibitors??
-
They have gone down before....we just have to hope for no more major variants/waves. I so want it to be summer in San Diego again....but with no Hotel Lottery info yet it seems even SDCC is waiting for a better forecast.
Hotel lottery info is never this early. In 2019 I don’t think they even gave us a week’s notice of the hotel lottery in April. But if you mean early bird hotel info, I don’t remember when that usually goes out.
-
Generally, CCI gives out the hotel lottery information 4-9 days before the lottery, and the lottery itself happens anywhere between late February and early May. So it's not at all odd not to have heard anything about the main hotel sale yet.
Early bird hotels have been announced anywhere between NOVEMBER OF THE PREVIOUS YEAR (2018 only; I have no idea what got into them just that one time), to late March. The recent (pre-pandemic) trend did seem to indicate January - the announcement on the Toucan Blog was 1/9/19 for 2019 and 1/21/20 for 2020. But in general I wouldn't be worried that no hotel information has been announce by the first week of February even in non-pandemic times.
-

The way I understood it was they sent an email to exhibitors confirming their spot and that hotel info would be coming later.
-

I wonder if they've finished fixing up the backend database and structure. In prep for wondercon tix and sdcc hotel pocolyps

That is an excellent point this could be they just haven't gotten the new system working. I have worked for plenty of companies that had to keep pushing dates out because they were not ready.
-
To the conversations above, more along the line of people/artists/etc. confirming that they're attending, so "official" in quotes then, but I was holding off getting plane tix until I started seeing things of this nature.

My company asks you book 14 days before because it's the cheapest. I have never seen that be the case.
-
I was so ready for this, I booked my flight back in December.
-
I booked mine in December also, so far prices haven't changed.
-
There probably is some advantage to booking early in some cases. I have google tracking it for me now though!
-
i started looking at flights today!
Nice! This is when I normally buy them and they're typically cheaper than they are now. So gonna wait it out

Flight prices are generally higher than they used to be due to increased post Covid demand, rising fuel prices, etc.

that makes a lot of sense

I've been flying a lot over the course of this past year. In General, I haven't found prices getting cheaper. But who knows, these past 2 years have taught us to roll with whatever comes
fyi we have a thread devoted to flying in for sdcc. :D ;D https://www.friendsofcc.com/forum/index.php?topic=11999.0

Absolutely. Can't let travel rules get in the way this time! lol
I booked it's official!! Reunion time lol
-
American has nonstop flights from Philly for $585 roundtrip. Normally, I book my SDCC flight in November, but this year I waited. This isn't a bad price for nonstop.
-
I’ve booked my flights and is ready for SDCC. Now just need to save some more money.
-
Yeah I finally settled on one for around $540 from FL... I have been looking for a few weeks and that was pretty reasonable. Only way I could have gotten a cheaper one and done red eyes but ewww lol

I feel your pain! I'm going on my own this time but the whole family is going to nycc and possibly back to sdcc next year lol. I don't look forward to paying x3. At one point I see the flights were $480 but I felt like they just creeping up so I caved... I hope you find something!

Woohoo!

All our badges showed up, hopefully they'll ship them with another cool pin. :)

They were giving out 2020 pins at WonderCon
-
We got Friday and Saturday... for almost 2 years, we've been under the impression we had Friday and Sunday.
Hoping for a pin as well..... and maaaaybe some really cool things since we've been committed to these badges for a couple years now.... One can dream, right? aha
-
Badge error has been corrected. Many were getting a Friday badge listed with a Sunday date. The badges also populate under the account tab under My Badges now.
-
Badges are showing in the accounts! Go check!
Yay! Just checked mine! :D
-
Yep I checked finally and my account shows my badges. What a sigh of relief. When I first went back when they told us to re-sign into their new system it wasn't there.
-
Just got my confirmation email re: my badge.
It is finally happening again! I miss you nerds.
-
Badges are showing in the accounts! Go check!
Just checked mine and it's there. Yay!!

I just got my fourth “You have a badge for Comic-Con 2022 email. I’ll think of it as my 4th reminder how lucky I am. Now to hit the jackpot with my 1st hotel pic ;D
-
I got my fourth badge email this morning, also. But, my sister and wife got emails today also and since they only have Sunday badges, I guess they're sending out one email per day purchased.
Seems like a kind of odd way to do it. Maybe just part of the transition.
-
I've gotten four emails as well and I can tell the con stress is kicking in because I can't bring myself to delete any of them even though I know they say the exact same thing.

Yes! I have gotten 5 and am keeping them all. I am examining them to make sure there is nothing unique about each one. Oh, who am I kidding? I am still gonna keep them all....at least until my badges arrive.
-
While some of us are worried as to why we only got 1 message.

I received my 800th email regarding confirmation for SDCC 2022.

Hope someone has an answer to this- I already asked CCI but have not yet heard back. I bought 3 badges in 2019 that were rolled forward for 2022. One person is unable to attend and wants to refund his badge. I just want to make sure the other 2 badges that were purchased don't get cancelled. Has anyone had a refund of 2022 badge here (and if so did it cancel out the other badges purchased at the same time) Really appreciate any help.

Updated
https://www.comic-con.org/comic-con-cancellationrefund-policy
Comic-Con Cancellation/Refund Policy
The deadline to request a refund has passed. If you purchased a badge for Comic-Con 2020, it has been automatically transferred to Comic-Con 2022. If you requested a refund prior to the deadline, your request is currently being processed.
Because Comic-Con was unable to take place in person during the past two years, we gave individuals that purchased badges for Comic-Con 2020 the option to transfer their badge to Comic-Con 2022 or request a refund for their Comic-Con 2020 badge purchase. The deadline to submit a refund request was May 1, 2022.
Pending refund requests are at the sole discretion of San Diego Comic Convention (SDCC). Sending a refund request does not guarantee you a refund. No refunds will be issued for any convention prior to badges purchased for Comic-Con 2020.
If you have additional questions, please email [email protected]
Reminder:

What is the attendee refund policy if I am unable to attend due to COVID-19?
CLICK HERE to view our full badge cancellation/refund policy. If you test positive for COVID-19 72 hours prior to Comic-Con 2022, you may request a refund if you provide proof of a positive COVID-19 test. Please do not bring your proof onsite. Just got the email reminding us to verify shipping address
Hello Comic-Con Attendee,
The deadline to update your badge shipping address is approaching! Your badge will be mailed to the designated shipping address that’s on file in your Comic-Con Member ID account as of May 13, 2022 at 11:59 PM Pacific Daylight Time (PDT). Please take a moment to make sure your shipping address is up-to-date to help us reduce the number of undeliverable badges. Your shipping address will be marked with a gray “Shipping” bubble.
HOW TO DESIGNATE A BADGE SHIPPING ADDRESS:
Log in to your Member ID account.
Click “My Addresses” from your Account Dashboard.
Click “Edit” next to the address you want your badge shipped to.
Check the box next to “Primary Shipping Address”.
Click “Save”.
Unfortunately, we cannot ship to international or international APO/FPO/DPO addresses. If you are an international attendee but would like your badge shipped to a US mailing address, log in to your Member ID account, go to “My Addresses”, and click “+Add Address” to enter a domestic shipping address. Check the box next to “Primary Shipping Address”, and click “Save”. International attendees without a US shipping address may pick up their badge when they arrive on-site.

Hello everyone,
Quick question I was asked and do not know the answer so I thought I would ask you all. If someone has a Sunday badge but their circumstances look they might change and they cannot travel to the con and tap in - will they still be eligible for the presale next year?
-
Presumably yes. That has been true in the past.

They've let people with badges that don't attend the Con participate in pre-reg, but they reserve the right to change that policy.

They have a new system, we don't know how it will flag now.

Although I don't think have been enforcing the physical presence requirement to qualify for Preregistration eligibility, I would play it safe and get a friend to tap your badge in and out of the RFID system.
-
I think a lot of this is hard to judge. Some things will stay the same as in the past, however, they had 2 years to think of new ways to do things. I would think we will see some changes, or is that just wishful thinking that they spent the time working on improving?

Comic-Con 2022 Badges Are Shipping!
https://comic-con.org/toucan/comic-con-2022-badges-are-shipping
If you haven’t done so already, it’s time to start preparing for Comic-Con 2022! Badges are shipping, anticipation is building, and travel plans are well underway. Here’s what you need to know.
THE RUNDOWN
Badge Tracking
Undelivered Badges
International Badges
TRACK YOUR BADGE:
Comic-Con 2022 badges are shipped via UPS Mail Innovations in partnership with the United States Postal Service (USPS). For tracking information, log in to your Comic-Con Member ID account, go to “Account” in the top menu bar, and select “My Badges” from the menu dropdown. If your badge is being shipped, there will be a blue “Shipping” button on your Comic-Con 2022 badge order. Tracking information includes:
Shipment Status
Shipping Address
Tracking Number (once available)
Items in Shipment
SHIPPING YOUR BADGE:
Badges will be shipped in waves, meaning that a friend or family member may receive their badge before you do. They will be delivered in a plain, nondescript package for confidentiality. So get excited and be on the lookout for your order!
Badges are mailed to the “Primary Shipping Address” in your Member ID account as of the badge shipping deadline. If you are a guest of a professional, your badge will not be shipped to you, but instead is included in the same package as the professional’s badge.
UNDELIVERED BADGES:
We cannot reship badges or reroute badges in transit. If you do not receive your mailed badge by July 6, 2022, you can report it as undelivered. Please keep an eye on our Badge Shipping page for instructions.
No matter the reason your badge was not delivered – lost in transit/sucked into a black hole/wrong address – our team will promptly disable the RFID associated with your undelivered badge. Doing so allows us to create a replacement badge for you on your first day on-site. No fee will be charged for undelivered badges, and reporting your badge as undelivered ensures the fee be waived prior to arrival.
Make sure to bring your badge confirmation and a valid photo ID to exchange for a replacement badge. Please note: badges that have been disabled cannot be used for entry into the event.
INTERNATIONAL BADGES:
We cannot ship to any international addresses. All international attendees can pick up their badge on-site at the Registration Area in the Sails Pavilion of the San Diego Convention Center. Badge pick-up begins on Tuesday, July 19, 2022. To pick up your badge, make sure to bring both a valid photo ID and your badge confirmation.
BADGE CONFIRMATION:
Are you having trouble finding your badge confirmation? Simply log in to your Member ID account and select “My Orders” from your Account Dashboard. Locate your badge order for Comic-Con 2022 and click the yellow “Details” button. Click the blue “Resend Confirmation” button, verify the email address is correct, then click “Send.”
If your badge is not delivered for any reason, you will need this badge confirmation and a valid photo ID to pick up a replacement badge on-site.
MORE INFO:
We’re so excited for this year's bags, books, and lanyards! While these complimentary items cannot be shipped prior to the event, you will be able to collect them upstairs in the Sails Pavilion of the San Diego Convention Center on the first day you arrive. Keep an eye out on our front page for all the newest information.

Just received mine at work. It came in a non descript media envelope. Looks like the RFID is a sticker on the back of the plastic holder. The paper portion seems pretty easy to take out. Happy to finally start counting down!
-
So, I haven't attended since 2015, but I thought they had switched to hard plastic card for badges by now? I will be honest, I was expecting something more sturdy. I always fear losing my badge when it's only holding on by the smallest of plastic.
Also - does anyone have a recommendation for a badge holder pouch? I looked briefly online today but only found ones from companies that do custom printing. I might just get a waterproof phone bag and use that.
-
You can't really use a badge holder pouch for these badges. They are too big and already come with a large plastic holder.
I do recommend hat you use a badge pull. Something like this:
https://www.amazon.com/Retractable-Holders-Carabiner-Vertical-Kevlar/dp/B07KGQQHCJ/ref=sr_1_2?keywords=retractable%2Bbadge&qid=1655852812&sr=8-2&th=1
You can attach it to your belt, or put it on a lanyard. It makes is much easier pulling out the badge to go against the RFID reader.
-
Hey SDCC Folks,
I'm looking to purchase a guest badge for 4 days+preview if anyone happens to have an extra.
Really want to go.
No such thing as a guest pass. all badges are with name and if someone sales it both people will be ban for life so no one is going to take that risk. your only option is to buy one if they go up for auction or wait till next year.
-
Looks like I should be getting mine tomorrow. Kinda sucks we won't be getting any free pins. Will just have to order and pick up during the con.
-
Woot, got my badges. Two notes:
- No boxes with pins / booklet this year. I assume this is a cost-saving measure, which is understandable.
- I completely forgot that my sis got Preview Night. I myself only have 4-day, so I assumed I got her only 4-day as well. But what happened was we were in a group, and the first group got in while PN was still available. Here I was trying to figure out what we should do for Wednesday evening. Ha.

I was so happy about having a Con and getting my badge, I completely forgot about the box/pin/booklet.

My badge came today!

They did have them in the last few years before COVID. Must be another (hopefully temporary) cost-cutting measure. I thought my mailer was empty at first when it arrived last night; it wasn't totally obvious to me at first from the photos that there was no hard plastic card in the center anymore.

I had the exact same experience/thought progression today. It’s so flimsy and easy to lose, especially over the course of travel. I misplaced my old lanyards when I moved a couple of years ago, so I’m definitely going to invest in buying a new one before I leave for SDCC. I’ll feel a whole lot better if that flimsy little card is attached to something more substantial.

I'm wondering if we'll get a box/pin/booklet when we pick up our bags/lanyards, or are they completely forgoing the extras this year.
-
Anxiously awaiting my badge. I can’t believe we’re so close To Comic Con. Can’t wait
-

I think it's cost cutting. I heard that volunteers won't get a t-shirt this year, we'll get a pin instead.
IMO signs are pointing at this being a light con. Not Turkeycon light but not a full on normal con. I'm expecting it be about 80% normal.
-
Badges arrived today! Sadly not the 4 plus preview I’m accustomed to but it’s better than nothing! Just grateful there’s a con again

80% of 130,000 is 104,000. I'll take it. :)
I've been doing rough monitoring of the hotel occupancy. It's slowly starting to fill up.

Hi fellow fans! I met a handful of amazing folk last November at the SE con in San Diego and hope to meet up again sometime this July if at all possible!
I was going to sheepishly post that I didn’t not get my badge yet but (if you don’t already know) your SDCC account will provide a tracking number so you can see when your badge has been shipped and just chew on your nails until it hits your mailbox.

One member of my group still doesn't have a tracking number on their account? Think its time to reach out about it? Or should I keep telling them to be patient.

Lower attendance would explain cost cutting. They have less revenue to work with. Inflation is also a factor. Everything is more expensive than it was when they set those badge prices 3 years ago. Which is why it never made sense to me for them to rollover badges.

I'm pretty sure they could not afford to refund all the badges. That money got them through the past 3 years paying full-time staff and putting on the virtual cons.

I do agree that things seem tight based on recent reports. Tighter than I thought they would be 2 years ago when this all started. Afterall Turkeycon was reportedly held to raise money.
At the end of 2019 their net assets were enough to pay for both a comic-con and a wondercon. Which is in line with what I've heard them say at a panel. That they had enough in reserve to cover the cost of a failed comic-con. Which to me meant a complete failure. They paid for everything but got no revenue in return. It didn't help those reserves that 2018 and 2019 were not good years. They lost a couple of million in 2018 and 2019 was basically flat. Normally they make a 2-4 million each year.
In addition there were those Pandemic era "loans" that were basically grants as long as everything was done right. They took advantage of those programs. They got PPP loans in both 2020 and 2021 that enabled them to retain their employees.
-
I wonder how they lost money in 18 and 19. They both felt as packed as ever

Wonder if that's when they were making big investment with regards to building up and staffing the Museum? Did they buy the building?

The city owns all the buildings in balboa park they just lease it for $1 a year but the tenant is responsible for all upkeep and repairs. They spent a lot to renovate the building just before the pandemic hit.
-
Yeah. it's not like they were making money on museum admission fees in those years.

They actually made a little money in 2019. About as much as a salary for 1 person. So basically flat.
Revenue was up in 2018 and 2019, so it was just as packed as ever. But expenses rose more than revenue. Part of that was due to the increase in salaries and other employee compensation. Between 2018 and 2019 they added a lot of people. Both in terms of employees and volunteers. The number of employees went up about 50% and the number of volunteers more than doubled.
-
Keep in mind that CCI is a non-profit organization. Once they had a decent reserve of cash, there was no need to 'make money'. Having a small 'profit' would have been considered a success (pre-COVID).

If their goal is to keep enough in reserve, they do need to make money every year. Since the cost to put on comic-con goes up every year. They need more than a small profit every year to keep up. They need to keep growing the reserve.
2018 and 2019 were not good years. In previous years they made quite a bit. In 2017 they made $2.5 million. In 2015 they made almost $4.5 million.

I think they did buy the building where they moved their headquarters to in 2019.

Argh!!! At least, it can be corrected if the badge doesn't make it to me but I'm so anxious!

My badge arrived last Friday.

For everyone receiving badges and putting them away, don't forget to add your FoCC lanyard!
If you don't have one, Alyssa will have a few at the FoCC gatherings on Tuesday and Wednesday.

I did not mean they bought it in 2019. They moved to the building in 2019.

Max PPP loans only covered 2.5x months of payroll.
-
Max PPP loans only covered 2.5x months of payroll.
Yes they did. PPP loans were per year, that makes it about 20% of their yearly salary. Which is what most people get on unemployment. On one end of the spectrum, there are the well publicized cases of people making more on unemployment than while working. On the other end of the spectrum, unemployment tops out at such a small percentage of someone's salary that it's not worth bothering with. For many people unemployment is 20-30% of their salary.
The point of PPP was not to completely make up for someone's salary. It was basically to allow them to get the equivalent of unemployment while still on payroll. It was to keep people on payroll. Which is the big thing companies had to do to make it a grant instead of a loan. Money is fungible. If they used the PPP loan to pay their employees then the loan is forgiven. If they used the money for other purposes, like rent, then it's not. It has to be paid back.

Quick question: will there be a SDCC party thread?

Quick question: will there be a SDCC party thread?
Sounds like an excellent idea @azul120 (https://www.friendsofcc.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=4951) !
You (or anyone else) is welcome to start and maintain a thread.
^^ that goes for any con related topic. With the caveat PG-13 only ;) LOL
