Back on Easter Weekend. (From the program guide: https://www.comic-con.org/sites/default/files/forms/wca2019_quickguide_v2.pdf (https://www.comic-con.org/sites/default/files/forms/wca2019_quickguide_v2.pdf))
And I'm glad about that, since that'll make a convenient excuse for NOT getting together with the in-laws.
-
Thanks for the heads up! I am sorry to see if back on Easter weekend again, but I am guessing that they had trouble scheduling.

That means all the non-con hotel rates will be higher >:(.
I’m not so sure about that; I seem to recall hotel rates (both con and not) being lower in past years when it fell on Easter. It’s not like a Thanksgiving or Christmas (or even a Memorial or Labor Day).
-
I had a great time at my first Wondercon this year, so am happy to see early planning dates! This is definitely on my list for next year...thanks!

Belated response to this, but it has been done! ^__~

After having just sort of looked from afar at Wondercon over the years, I am really looking forward to next year and making forward plans to go. Wondercon is very different from SDCC, and has many of its own charms as I am coming to know. I really liked being able to look down from the balconies both outdoors and indoors and see all the wonderful costumes. The area at the fountain, where photo shoots were nonstop, the varied food trucks...the layout of the hotels...Yes...I think I can place Wondercon on my con list. :D

Don't forget the awesome stadium/graduated seating in the Arena, making any seat a good seat!
-
Even while planning for SDCC, I still have my eye toward Wondercon and squirreling a little bit of money away each pay period. Since this will be my 2nd visit, I now have the 'lay of the land' and can have even more fun. :D
-
Now that I have been to Wondercon and SDCC in the same year, I can really compare the two. Wondercon was a bit of a revelation to me-- it was much more laid back, had a much higher percentage of fans in costume, and it was far easier to get into panels. The selection of panels was smaller, yet I found I lot to see. SDCC is the ultimate. It is a city unto itself, and the excitement cannot be matched. I fear that now I must go to both--as well as several local cons. I adore the con scene. It is work, yet it brings me such energy! :)

You are preaching to the choir, Marcia!
-
I haven't been to WonderCon since 2013, I'm really feeling like I need to go in 2020. Last year Planet Comicon in Kansas City was the same weekend and that one is closer so I chose the less expensive route, but this year they are on different weekends so I'm going to go all out and do both.
-
It is much easier to get an artist of Jim Lee's caliber to sign something at WC than SDCC. Therefore, I go to WC to enjoy the B20 type panels and autographs. SDCC for me is all about exclusives and off-sites.
-
That means all the non-con hotel rates will be higher >:(.
This might not be true for all the nearby hotels. I just booked my room at the Doubletree Hilton for about $128 + tax which is a bit cheaper than last year's OnPeak rate (thanks to f22raptor for the lower-rate notice). I feel oddly excited about Wondercon now, even tho it's still 9 months away.
-

I feel excited about WonderCon as well! (Not because of booking hotel room reservations since I don't usually stay in a hotel for this con either, ha ha.) I'm looking forward to a smaller, less crowded con experience with the spirit of San Diego Comic-Con. I do love checking out WonderCon's extensive Artist Alley and encourage any who attends for the first time in 2020 to check it out too. XD
-
I may try to attend next year. My husband isn't keen on adding another con, so I may go it alone. I am doing one this year by myself, so we will see how that goes (It's KCon LA, a K-Pop convention-he has zero interest in that, LOL).
-
Depending on my work status I may go to WC next year, at least for 1 or 2 days.

Thanks for the tip! I just booked for $116/night, refundable. Right now they have a "long weekender" deal where if you get in on Thursday and stay 4-5 days, Sunday is half off.

I LOVE WonderCon. It's my favorite Con for just experiencing 3 days of pure geek joy. No stress or pressure of SDCC, but the same fancentric vibe. It's the best.

I haven't been to wondercon in several years and was so ready to go this year, but I was a bridesmaid for my friend who had her wedding the exact same weekend.
However, next year I am 100% going!! It's my weekend off work! In the past, I enjoyed it for being less stressful, easy to get tickets and the fact that I do not have to spend thousands on a hotel as I can just commute from home!
So looking forwards to all the conventions of 2020!!
-
I haven't been to Wondercon before, been to other cons but thinking 2020 will be my first year for Wondercon and looking forward to it.
-
It is exciting to hear about others who are finding out about Wondercon or looking forward to a first visit. My first visit last year was so much fun. So different from SDCC and a great add-on. Flying across the country, I didn't know if it was worth it..but, for me..it was!
-
Love WonderCon!! To me, it's a chill show that's about art and fandom, and not over-run with Ebay flippers trying to mow you over to get to "exclusives". I love that there's actually room to move around in the aisles, especially in Artist's Alley, where you can actually stand there and admire an artist's work without getting shoved out of the way. I saw some good panels this year, too, for Batman's 80th. And of course, the food trucks outside are great! If you're into art and comics, this is the show to check out :)
-
I’ve been lucky - I lived in SF when Wondercon was there, and now I live in LA, so the show has been a no-brainer for me. Usually, I only attend for a day and a half or so.
This past July, I took my 11-year-old nephew to SDCC for the full Wed-Sun experience. I was blown away by his engagement with the talent, particularly the artists and the small press folks.
He asked if we could do all of Wondercon in 2020.
How could I say no?
-
I've gone to WonderCon now several times since it moved to Anaheim. 2020 will be my 21st Comic-Con, and WonderCon feels to me like Comic-Con did when I first started going in 2000. Comics are a big feature with some movie and tv stuff. Artist Alley is the almost-too-empty joy where you can literally accidentally stumble on Marv Wolfman's table and find him reading a novel out of boredom & he's excited to chat to someone asking to sign a comic (happened to me last year). The Exhibit Hall has a plethora of great stuff (albeit few exclusives), and the "off sites" are mostly amazing food trucks!! Heck, one year I was in line for The Arena during a very busy day (IIRC there was PACIFIC RIM, an X-Men film, and some other great panels), and chatting with someone I learned they were actually on CCI staff in charge of line logistics. They told me they like to get a feel for the lines to see how smooth things run and what needs to change. Really cool person.
Some years I've been too busy to attend WonderCon, but it really is a great experience I can't recommend enough. If someone locally (I live in San Diego) talks about wanting to see Comic-Con, I tell them to go to WonderCon to get a good taste.

WonderCon Anaheim offers the complete convention experience!

From https://www.comic-con.org/wca/masquerade (bold = mine)
Click here to download complete contestant information, rules, and an advance Entry Form. https://www.comic-con.org/sites/default/files/forms/wca2020_masqentryform_v1.pdf
A limited number of contestant slots are available, so interested costumers should submit an entry form early as we often fill up before the convention. Photos of the costume or costumes you are entering will also be required for confirmation of eligibility. Entries are now being accepted, and the deadline for submitting an entry form is March 23, 2020, but we often fill up before the deadline. After that date there will be a Waiting List to fill openings from cancellations. You should not wear your costume at WonderCon prior to the show so it will be a surprise for the audience and judges, and so you and it will be fresh and safe from possible wear and tear or even damage in the large and busy Anaheim Convention Center crowds. For safety reasons, contestants must be at least age 10 to be on stage.
No flash photography is allowed at the event, although non-flash photography and video recording is welcome. There will be a flash-allowed posing area with a backdrop in a nearby room where contestants will go after their stage presentations, but photographer spaces are limited, and those wishing access to the Masquerade Photo Area should reserve a spot in advance by emailing [email protected]. Credentialed press wishing front section Arena seating should also write to the Coordinator in advance.
Remember that the Saturday badges are the first to sell out, and you’ll need one to participate in, or just attend, the Masquerade, so purchasing your badge early is wise … WonderCon Anaheim 2020 badge sales will open soon! Our volunteer staff has been running convention Masquerades for 25 years, and we’ll do our best to provide you with a fun experience. For any questions, feel free to write to us at [email protected]

Should badges be going on sale soon? I recall them being sold starting in late DEcember for the past couple of years...

Right? Seems late. Don’t they usually put them up after the General SDCC sale?

We went ahead and bought our flights for WonderCon even though the badges haven't gone on sale yet. I figured the flights would only go up from this point on. I wish badges would go on sale just to ease my mind.

Me!! The Thursday before we are going to do Disneyland. We fly in Wednesday and may do Knotts for that afternoon/evening because my mom loves Peanuts.
-
WonderCon always has discounted Disney tickets, but they usually aren’t available until a couple of weeks before the con. They also have discounted evening tickets, so that you can go to the con in the day and then to Disney at night.
-
See? This is one reason why I adore this group. I had no idea of this discount...thank you FoCC! (Once again) :)

I haven't seen the Marvel areas yet! (obviously) But I would definitely be checking out the Disney forums for the latest info, should it be open before Wondercon. I'm also checking to see how the reservation system goes for RotR. My son wants to make his own light saber this year (thank you, @alyssa (https://www.friendsofcc.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=1) ;) ) so we'll have to set aside time for that too...
We're staying at the Grand Californian Villas for WonderCon (I rented DVC points) so we'll be doing early entry each day.

I was thinking that badges went on sale in mid/late January last year, but I just checked and it was actually December 11. But WonderCon was also a couple of weeks earlier last year than it is this year.
The year before, they went on sale on November 20.
So you're right...it's definitely later than usual.

Consider that the show is in less than 3 months. That's awfully late for badge sales!

Indeed!
Last year they also had that tiered pricing structure, with a discount for ordering tickets early. I'm guessing that might not be in the cards this year.
-
Finally registered for my badge. Gotta say... I'm getting a really good vibe this year. Looking forward to a meet-up or two...

https://www.comic-con.org/wca/2020/child-badge-policy
Child Badge Policy
Did you know that WonderCon Anaheim has one of the most generous child badge policies in the industry? Children (age 12 and under) are free with a paying adult! Children do not need to register for a Comic-Con Member ID to receive a complimentary badge. You may register up to two children per paid adult attendee when you arrive onsite. Children must be present to be registered for a badge and adults will be required to provide emergency contact information for any child registrant.
To accommodate the transition from child (age 12 and under) to junior (age 13 – 17), we have set a static date to determine who is considered a child for WonderCon Anaheim 2020. If you are age 12 or under on February 29, 2020, you do not need to buy a badge for WonderCon Anaheim 2020. You may attend as a child, with a paying adult. If you are age 13 or older on or before February 29, 2020, you must create a Comic-Con Member ID and purchase a badge for WonderCon Anaheim 2020.

I don't know about Funko at WonderCon. But for all you Funko fans, the brick and motar store in Hollywood is HEAVEN!!!! 40,000 square feet of Funko and soooo many AMAZING photo opps!!! I did a quick 5 minute walk as I only saw it as I was approaching the Pantages to watch Frozen. I am going back tomorrow for the FULL experience! I haven't felt that excited about something in a long time!

I've been crazy busy at work, with concerts and Finals coming up, so I haven't thought much about WonderCon as far as getting closer; I guess it's in April so I'm still in the "that's distant future" mode. It's on the first weekend of our Spring Break, immediately following a huge 3-day/night band & orchestra festival we host so I still have a TON of stuff in front of me. But it'll be here sooner than later!

Agreed.
We rented (non-refundable) DVC points to stay at Disneyland for the con... if either Disneyland or WonderCon happens/is open, we will be there.
-
I think the last 2 weeks of March will be a good indicator of whether or not WonderCon will get postponed/cancelled.
I think at this point, containment is out of the window. It's just a matter of if the number of new cases/deaths slow down. If it continues to increase around that timeframe, then yeah, I'd be worried about WonderCon. If the numbers slow down, then I think it's still happening.
-

A lot can happen in 1 month, but this virus doesn’t care what we think, but finding a host. Btw, California is in a state of emergency, which I doubt will end anytime soon. That status matters a lot, E3 is also being threatened. Every con right now is on 50/50 status, in my opinion, until things settle down.

Distance doesn’t matter if an area has an outbreak already, or it is about to have one. Regardless, hopefully, things do change quickly for the better. I am now a fan of the April date! I gives us time to see how the situation goes.

SJC > SNA flights are down to $49 each way, I just cancelled my flight for ECCC and booked it for WC.
Though to be honest, I'm not counting on WonderCon happening. While there haven't been any deaths in Southern California yet, there have been reported cases in Los Angeles, Orange, and San Diego counties. I guess we'll wait and see.

I'm still hoping for the best, but since I'm local I'm not in a position to have to worry about hotels etc. I'm sure that the SDCC folks will make the smartest decision...

I presume that events being canceled in Seattle doesn't necessarily mean it would be the same in Anaheim. I believe there are certain cities in California that have a few cases of infected patients but not all cities do. The state of emergency declarations were to really get more federal or state funding towards the eventual scenario when the cities get a real outbreak. But so far, I don't believe any Californian cities have a real outbreak the way Seattle does. If there aren't any reports of people infected with the virus in Anaheim, theoretically it could still be safe to let Wondercon take place. I just wonder though if studios might still end up backing out or canceling to protect their talent. If the studios all back out and there aren't any big movie or TV panels, do people still want to go?

I would have thought this a few weeks ago, but it isn't just Seattle that has cancelled events. Multiple events have been pulled in San Francisco and San Jose, weeks before they announced their first coronavirus case (even with no deaths, so far.) The county of Santa Clara just cancelled the San Jose Super Toy show which was scheduled this weekend. And I don't believe Austin, TX even has any confirmed cases yet, but the city just canceled SXSW. Yes, ECCC is the first major comic con in the US that got canceled, but now that they have, I fear the precedent has been set.
-
That's a real bummer. I did read about the tech conferences being canceled in SF earlier but I thought most had to do with businesses from China and they were afraid of international travelers increasing the risk of infection. I didn't realize that San Jose has been canceling their conventions too. At this point, it almost sounds like Wondercon might go the same route if everything else is being canceled.
-
If Disneyland is forced to close, they will cancel WonderCon. But, things will have to be really bad for Disneyland to close.

I will still be going as long as one or both of WonderCon and Disneyland is still open. I'm hoping for the best, this will be only my second WonderCon, and first time going all three days. And first time at Galaxy's Edge.
-
If it isn't cancelled, my husband and I will definitely be there. But we're just a drive down from LA so we don't really have to adjust plans.

We're in the same boat. But just a few weeks ago, I took my nephew to Disneyland and came home with a cold. Definitely not the most germ-free place in Southern California... So I'm still a little concerned.

I’m not concerned for myself any more than I would for the common cold or flu. I am concerned, however, about spreading it to someone vulnerable.

Agreed. I have basically zero fear of it myself (I understand I might get it, but it would almost certainly just be an annoying but manageable illness for me), so all I'm doing personally is more diligent/lengthy handwashing. But I drove instead of taking public transit to see my 90-year-old grandma this weekend.
-
Looks like Coachella (scheduled for mid-April in Southern California) is the latest festival to postpone. However, it's bigger than WonderCon, and, although I've never been, I have to think its outdoor environment is less conducive to hand washing, etc. than WonderCon. (Small comfort, I know...)

-
I'm totally the opposite of you guys. The more I read about the disease, the more I'm terrified of getting it. Not all non-elderly people get mild to moderate symptoms. It seems like it's more luck, if your immunity system overreacts or not. If your immune system does overreact, are there enough intubators for you to use one? And then there's the horrible feeling that you may have transferred the disease to your loved ones and co-workers.
My impression is that it's best to try to delay getting the disease because there are many research labs test-trialing medications right now. They're all in the early stages so it's going to be awhile for FDA-approval but if the outbreak becomes too huge, they may have to prescribe these off-label to save lives. The good news is that there are some promising meds like remdesivir and other anti-virals that might be able to treat the disease, and also surprisingly meds that treat autoimmune diseases like chloroquine may also help.

I’ve also heard that enclosed, indoor spaces are more likely to spread it...though honestly indoor/outdoor is probably splitting hairs.
Anyway, the more events that get “postponed,” the fewer hopes I have for any of them to actually happen. I’m not so sure that copying and pasting most of 1-2Q onto 3-4Q is going to work.

Although the statement below pertains to WonderCon Anaheim, we want to keep you informed. We will notify you of any new developments regarding Comic-Con, should they occur.
STATEMENT FROM COMIC-CON
REGARDING COVID-19
March 12, 2020
To protect public health and slow the rate of transmission of COVID-19, the California Department of Public Health announced a recommendation that gatherings and events of more than 250 people should either be postponed or cancelled. Comic-Con (organizer of WonderCon) will abide by this recommendation. Therefore WonderCon Anaheim, scheduled for April 10-12, 2020 in Anaheim, California, will be postponed until a later date. We will begin processing refunds for badge purchases in the coming days.
We continue to work closely with officials in San Diego and at this time no decision has been made regarding the rescheduling of Comic-Con slated to take place this summer; July 23-26, 2020. We urge everyone to follow the recommendations set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and your local health officials.
-
To myself: Don't panic, don't panic, breathe, breathe, don't panic....
-
Understandable why CCI would postpone WonderCon, but I'm also a little bummed out that I won't be getting my spring "break from reality" (which is what I consider all cons I attend because you aren't thinking about real-life responsibilities when you're there, ha ha).
Oh well. Better safe than sorry. ^__^;;

I'm sure most of you know this already, but a ton of artists and companies are selling their stuff online. Lots of commissions to be had, and convention exclusive toys etc. Many of them could use the money, as these big conventions are their main source of income.

Many, actually. I recommend hitting the official page and noting the artists/small companies that look interesting and checking them out on Twitter or Instagram.
If I had the money, I'd jump on David Mack's extended commission offer. His stuff isn't cheap, but damn...

Virtual cons are the future. I'm not saying that physical cons are going away, but being able to attend virtually is good for everyone. It allows more people to attend. It buffers the revenue stream when people can't physically attend. Just like how colleges that don't support online classes are caught short footed right now. I don't think they'll make that mistake again.
Maybe instead of there being no comic-con this year, it will be the first year of virtual comic-con. I watch most of the panels on youtube anyways. If the G20 can meet virtually, why not comic-con?

Maybe it is the future, but I dislike everything about it. To me a con is everything about the people, the ambience, parties... a virtual one just sounds like an improved directory of exhibitors to me

I agree. Doing things I normally do online, even if they're somehow con-related (watch presentations, find out entertainment news, buy things) and then calling it a virtual con just fails to excite me. The entire point of a con, in my opinion, is to pull all of this together into one big real life in person event.
-

And you can have all that. Others can enjoy it virtually. Why do you think it has to be either or?

Sense of Wonder: The Art of WonderCon Anaheim with Jen Bartel
In February 2020, the Comic-Con Museum premiered a new gallery exhibition called “Sense of Wonder: The Art of WonderCon Anaheim.” The exhibit showcased rare, behind-the-scenes art from the WonderCon Program Book covers from 2010 through 2020. The 2020 cover was designed and illustrated by artist Jen Bartel, who was present at the opening night reception. Here’s a recording of a Facebook Live interview done with Jen talking about her work on the cover and her career in comics and beyond.

The Art of Shag Video Presentation
"The Art of Shag," a Comic-Con Museum gallery exhibition, featured works from Josh Agle (Shag) himself. Imbued with a distinctive attitude and sly sense of humor, the works of Shag blend pop culture, Tiki culture and the Mid-Century Modern aesthetics. His unique pieces are unmistakably of our time, but reminiscent of animation and commercial art from the 1950s and ‘60s. The exhibit displayed signature prints, originals, merchandise, and book samples from Shag’s career that portrayed his distinctive colorful style and sense of retro decadence. This presentation by Shag was a Facebook Live broadcast on Feb. 1, 2020, and features the artist discussing his career and influences, with an emphasis on his art.
