Is it already time to start thinking about this? Sure, why not! It looks like SW released their July 2017 dates in December of last year. Does anyone know of any information yet about this year? Probably the same schedule of released calendar dates?
As always, I love to plan out as much as I can surrounding the Con!

LOL. I was looking at Southwest yesterday and they had open flights into early April 2018. I have never planned this early before, but I do see advantages now. Will keep watching!

We are currently accepting air reservations through April 6, 2018. On August 28, 2017 we will open our schedule for sale through June 1, 2018. This date is subject to change! Please check back frequently.

Oops-that reminds me-I need to book my flight for Gallifrey in February. Where have I been? Luckily, I have travel credits.

Me too! But we just got Southwest credit cards in June and I am waiting for my 60,000 points bonus to hit my account before I book...
-
I almost applied for a SWA credit card... until I saw they charge an annual fee. I only use SWA a few times a year, so it's not enough to balance out taking an annual fee hit.

I agree, but the 60,000 points signing bonus is at least $200 of airfare for the $69 annual fee. And if you're trying to get a companion pass, those 60,000 points apply to that status.
-
I have flown Southwest in the past to see family, guessing they fly that airline alot so i go along and since alow 2 carry ons it helps to not gotta check in any bags unless they run out of space for any reason then they put suitcase below by chance. You not assigned a seat but if u check in early enough u get on sooner and decide where u wanna sit for ride to next destination at time. just hope u get a seat u want or might be stuck in seat by anyone that ruins ur ride for any reason lol. but can always try to move if u ask and they see any open seats by chance.

true but if you use the card and accumulate points- trips become free offset by the fee. I have done an enormous amt of free travel due to my sw card. the annual fee is well worth it.

I love flying Southwest to Comic-Con because of the 2 free bag check-ins. Trust me, you walk out of comic con with more stuff then you originally planned. And it has the added benefit of being one of the cheaper airlines out there right now and with the service that they provide, it's outstanding. Ah, next year can't come sooner.

Customers of size
While you don't HAVE to buy a second seat if they declare you need one, (armrest has to go down) and the flight is full they won't let you fly.
Southwest is the only airline that guarantees a refund on the second fare purchased.
Considering it was a cross country flight already expensive, it was a savior in the end.

Alot of mixed comments and yes i had to plan right even if i didnt have to deal with hotel and flying hassles. i had to take a bus or 2 and trolley or walk ea day to check in early or check in after job so was able to skip having to wake early and do so before con opened. so try if possible get to san diego a day or 2 before con start so a chance to adjust to time zones and all if flying like cross country. and yes u may get alot at con so try come light as possible cause u might fly home with alot goodies u carry on or store under plane.

Southwest announced yesterday they will start flying to Hawaii in 2018. Hopefully they open up a route to San Diego and put those up for sale early 2018, I'm assuming that will save us quite a bit of money on SDCC next year. While I know hotels are expensive the flights are always what hurts me the most coming from Hawaii.

That is a change! Previously they were going to open it up on October 26. I have the date set in my calendar...
-
Southwest is going to start servicing Hawaii so I may get to join y'all here in this thread at some point :P
No announcement on the dates though. With any luck they'll have special promotional rates during the summer since it's a new route haha. Please please please.
This also means you guys must come visit me since it's cheaper. [member=1060]DRWHO42[/member] IM LOOKIN AT YOU. We must SCUBA.

for folks wondering if it's worth it to get a SW CC
I just booked RT tix from Portland ME to LAX for $100-- that includes the security fee, early boarding & buying 2000 extra points for $60
yes, my spring trip to Wonder Con, Silicon Valley CC & SD Comic Fest is ON
party at [member=4434]Angel_[/member] 's place

Southwest just opened up its June and July travel dates this morning. You can now book through August 6. The earlier you book, the better your Early Bird position will be.
And I concur with Alyssa on the Southwest CC deal. We did 2 of them in June (personal card and business card) and were able to earn a companion pass. The points we got have paid for close to $2,500 of airfare, and we've gotten about $600 in free companion airfare using the companion pass.
-
Just looking at the flights, and they don't seem to be scheduling the same times for the flight out there. I either have to leave super early in the morning or late in the afternoon (not an option!). May have to think about heading out on Tuesday (the late night flight is only $89!). As always, the flight out on Monday morning is at the crack of dawn! I am used to it, plus with the time difference, it means that we don't get back home during rush hour (or late at night!)
Thanks for the heads up!
-
Yeah, I was booking a flight in June, and I had planned on taking a non-stop that leaves in the morning. But Southwest changed their schedule and now the non-stop on that route leaves in the afternoon. It messes me up a bit, but still saves so much time and money that I am taking it.
-
Are you folks picking up your SW tix now, or, waiting a bit, and just looking at pricing?
-
I see they added the dates but everything is showing as sold out. I have never looked for flights this early, is this normal? No way they sold out every single flight in a couple of hours.
-

I usually book the day they open up. I figure i can always get refunded points if the price drops-

that sounds odd- if you have the time i'd give SW CS a call- I'm guessing if ALL the flights are sold out for multiple days then yes- there's a snafu on their part
-

Mine came up that way too, but then I changed the Departure Date to the day before, and then back to what I wanted, and prices appeared.

Tried that didn't work for me
-
Weird...now the latest date you can pick is June 5th...I just looked at like a couple hours ago and the dates for SDCC 18 worked...
EDIT: Tried a manual entry and got the below...

Something strange is afoot. Probably just getting it sorted.
-
Very odd. I was able to book June and early August flights this morning.
-
Odd indeed. I was able to book flights this morning, but yes, you're right. No availability for July right now. They might just be sorting some things out.
Here's a direct pull from a tweet they just sent out "We are aware of an issue involving booking flights beyond June 6, 2017. We're working on it and hope to have it fixed as soon as we can. ^SL"

Flight booked...bring on Hotepocalypse!
-
Just booked mine too, so everything is working fine now. This is also the first year in a while where we don't need to participate in open registration either, so I can 'relax' until the hotel lottery and Funko Fundays tickets.
-
Options from DC are terrible this year. Looks like I might be looking elsewhere for the first time. :(
-
Excited that at least several of you are able to book flight already! Very cool that some of you can take care of badges & flights before Thanksgiving!
-
Holy cow I normally have been paying $400+ for tickets to fly out to San Diego and just bought them for $195 round trip! To make it even better I had enough points so it cost me $11 total :o

Guess that is what happens when u plan ahead and get better deals.
-
Loving how cheap it is. Since I could chose my times and still get cheap I went for $257 airfare. a good $100-200 under the usual
-
My round trip from here is considerably cheaper than the other airlines, now just need to monitor the prices to see if they drop further to get moneys back :)
-
From the SF bay area there are some nice $59 (each way) fares from San Francisco and San Jose. Oakland has lots of $69 fares as long as you avoid returning on the Sunday. (Still seeing the "booking window" error from time to time.)
-
Just picked mine up from SJC. A couple $59 flights still on Wednesday morning; Monday the cheapest back is $75 but Tuesday everything is $59.
Badge/flight secured...now bring on Hotelpocalypse! >:D

Went ahead and bought some tickets even though we don't know about badges yet. Just have to remind myself that window for reusing the money starts from when I purchased.

I am, not a FoCC one though, it predates my joining the forum.

That's right, it gave us a pair of 4-day+PN badges. They gave away 4 pairs which is the same number they put up for the charity auction this year, of course those are better since you can do returning reg in 2019. I think I got close on one of the brain teasers once, but that might have just been a dream :)
-
I have been checking SW fares and the dates and availability keep changing...they seem to come and go. It is a bit early for me to book, anyway so I will keep on the lookout. The only thing about booking really early is that if I go for the cheapest- 'wanna get away' fares, they are not refundable, but are reusable within a year. Decisions, decisions!
-
Booked my flight....can always change if need be, but might as well get a seat ready!
-
I just booked my flight from Philly. A week and a half ago the fare was $430 roundtrip. 2 days ago it was $570. I just checked and it's now down to $380. I jumped on it. Check multiple times, different times and be persistent. Southwest fares jump all over the place. Grab a low fare when you see it!!

can someone help me with a clarification? If i book a flight with $$ and end up canceling it, how long do i have to use those dollars?
say i book 11/16/17 for July '17, and end up canceling it, do i have until 11/16/18 to BOOK a flight OR do I need to FLY by 11/16/18?
thx in advance-
-
I believe you have that long to BOOK another flight (i.e. use the funds).

Last time I did this, I had to use my credit one year from the date I originally booked. I had to fly by then IIRC

This is correct!
-
just to be crystal clear.
if i buy with money, today I must complete my trip by this day next year. Correct?
I can work with that if I know the rules ;)
-
From the Southwest website, https://www.southwest.com/flight/travel-funds-search.html (https://www.southwest.com/flight/travel-funds-search.html):
View Travel Funds
Check the available balance of Travel Funds from an unused or cancelled reservation, Southwest® gift card, or Southwest® LUV Voucher. You may enter any combination of up to four Travel Funds, up to four Southwest gift cards, and up to four Southwest LUV Vouchers at the same time.
Note: All travel involving Travel Funds from an unused or cancelled reservation or a Southwest LUV Voucher must be completed by the expiration date. Travel Funds from an unused or cancelled reservation may only be applied toward the purchase of future travel for the individual named on the ticket.
-
yeah, i saw that & it doesn't quite answer my question-
I can live with the '1 year to complete travel from date of purchase' option as long as i know it's in play ;)
-
It is extremely difficult to find anything on the Southwest website stating the 12 month expiration period for non-refundable tickets, but I did find this comparison table, https://www.southwest.com/flight/pop_fareCompare.html?airline=WN (https://www.southwest.com/flight/pop_fareCompare.html?airline=WN), that includes...
Reusable Funds
If you cancel your flight, 100% of your ticket value can be applied to future travel for up to 12 months. New reservations inherit the earliest expiration date from any funds applied from the old ticket. Therefore, the expiration date of our new reservation and all associated funds may be less than 12 months.
Combine that with the information located here, https://www.southwest.com/html/air/fare-information.html (https://www.southwest.com/html/air/fare-information.html)...
- Fares are nonrefundable but may be applied toward future travel on Southwest Airlines for the originally ticketed passenger only.
- Should a passenger fail to apply the nonrefundable ticket toward the purchase of future travel within the eligibility period, the entire amount of the fare, which includes without limitation, all fees, taxes, and charges, will be forfeited.
Combine that with what was previously posted, I would say that you do get 12 months to use your funds, but travel needs to be completed within one year of the original booking date.
It's a shame they just don't outright state all of this in one policy.
You can always contact Southwest to get clarification and, at least, something in writing if there is an issue.
-
as you said it's tricky to find!! i even would question if it was made intentionally confusing.
I distrust verbal CS because it's not trackable- i will need travel funds either in July or next dec- so to be safe, i need to wait till after this Dec '17 if there's a possibility that i may not want to use the funds until next Dec '18.
-
Yeah for mine (in 2015), I bought tix in April 2015 and had to cancel in June 2015... they gave us credit on each account that had to be used by our original booking date of April 2015 so they expired April 2016. Unfortunately, we lost 2 of them but got to use the other 2.

-
I think there is clearer verbiage if you actually have travel credits, but I am going off of memory (so take my statement with a huge grain of salt!) Like when you try to apply them-there is a blurb...
-
If you buy your ticket on 8/1/2017 then you must use them on a flight that occurs before 8/1/2018.
-
I just pulled the trigger on the airfare. When I checked after registration its was near $600. After I read the thread and decided just to check what its at now, saw airfare for $440. Had to do it.

I agree, I've been monitoring flights from Chicago. I had to buy them separately when I saw the flight prices go down on different dates.
-
We just booked as well. Prices seem to be pretty low right now - might be a good time to double check your fare if you've purchased earlier.

Yep, we decided to add a day to our trip and were able to get the same low price so no charge for the change :)
-
I booked mine yesterday and it was only 360! I haven't gotten that low of a price since my first year (2010) - usually its 400-500. I don't know what is going on with the prices but booking now seems like a great idea.
-
Yea, my bro recent got ticket for me to go visit later for like 250 so the sooner u get a ticket the cheaper may be cause u wait too long and last min it might be more unless u dont mind using a site that checks all airlines for the cheapest seat possible. i wish it was cheaper but it still chance to visit and hang out with family not able to go see all the time.
-
I must've either gotten a great price from PHL to SAN ($508) or I keep missing cheaper windows, cause I can't seem to come across it any cheaper on the SW site when I check. Darn.
-

Try sites that compare prices like trivago kinda thing. im sure airlines want traffic after all their missteps over past times so they gonna try keep tickets as cheap as they can and can be many factors as to why they not now unless u can catch them on a day they running specials for one way or round trip to certain places. even if u had to take a transfer if not direct flight to san diego.
-
Checked flights yesterday and they went up by $20 roundtrip from last week. $463.50 Roundtrip from Atlanta to San Diego
-
I guess it how far u coming from that make tickets cost so much even if get months ahead and all. i take same airline most time and fam try get cheap as possible since closer and cheaper by chance .

New Orleans is NOT going down and it hasn't been this high in a long damn time, it's ridiculous.

If anything i would call southwest directly cause guessing they give info to sites of any changes anytime.
-
New Orleans is NOT going down and it hasn't been this high in a long damn time, it's ridiculous.
Better buy now.... they are not going down at this point. I purchased mine in January and they have steadily gone up since. (coming from Orlando). I have never seen them drop after March. Remember, it's Southwest, if they do, you can always get a credit for a future flight. But no credits to be had if you pay top dollar.
BUY BUY BUY now....don't wait!
-
I agree on buying now, but we did see a fare drop in April last year (April 15). Here is a link to an article on how to get the lower fare without messing with your early bird check in (if you got it) if the price goes down. The only gotcha is that you get the difference in travel credits that will need to be used within one year of the date of purchase of the original flight. So, if you aren't traveling anywhere else in the next year, it's not a real savings.
http://dealswelike.boardingarea.com/2014/02/28/if-a-southwest-flight-goes-down-in-price/
So, if you're traveling again soon, and can use the travel credits, I would buy now, but keep checking. There is no guarantee it will go down (last year I was surprised that it did), so I would go ahead and buy now, regardless.
-
Even if prices go down, you can almost always call southwest and get a refund for the price change. A service like Tripitpro will tell you when this happens, but if you just keep an eye on the price, you can call them. It may come in the form of a travel credit, but it's still worth it to try.

Hey, for what it's worth, I just checked Southwest's site and my flight to San Diego had dropped by $16 bucks. I already submitted the change to get the credit. It might be worth a look for others!

How do you submit a change to get credit?

I will be flying out of there, also! We bought our months ago, when they were about $75 each way, so I am not sure you will be able to get much better.

Maybe you're like me and you scan who might be heading to SDCC before your flight. lol Coming back to SMF our tickets were $116, not bad, so I am hoping for $77 or anything cheaper.
-
If anything make sure u are booked now if not already , cause closer to con it might cost more and all. i recent flew to see family and was only like 250 round trip so some good prices. any bank u can save then u can use that towards ur budget to have at con lol.
-
Really shocked that our fares haven't moved up this year at all from when we booked in January. I wonder whats going on within the airline industry...

It can be alot of things, some do to when u book and also distance u fly from. there always certain days they suggest u try to fly out to save any way possible. times have changed so the industry tries to adjust do to things as events happen and all.

Southwest just majorly dropped the prices on all their summer flights. New Orleans round trip is almost $200 cheaper now.
