GenCon 2020 will be held July 30 - August 2 in Indianapolis, IN. We are regular attendees of GenCon (going in 2015 for the 'once in a lifetime' trip and then being hooked). Anyone else plan to attend next year?
-
I remember your 2015 'once in a lifetime trip'
of course you got VIG so your set for life :)
My biggest problem with returning now is as much as I want to (and I do) PAX now has PAX Unplugged in Philly and while the two are not comparable yet PU is a solid show bringing the right companies. Added bonus that it's right by my best friends house who I save on hotel and now joins me for a day or two so it's like a good substitute.
-
LOL, yep, we were just going to do it that one year, but 2 days in we knew that we had to come back the following year.
VIG doesn't mean 'set for life', it means 'indentured for life'. ;) We now HAVE to go every year, or we lose our status.

I'm seriously considering it, but I have to wait until a small local con that I'm a regular of announces its 2020 dates. There's a 75% chance they'll overlap, and I'm not ready to give up Costume College yet.

If you find that you are coming, please post here and we will be happy to give you advice re: hotels, event tickets, etc. While getting a badge is easy, there are definitely elements of the GenCon experience that are quite different from SDCC.

yeah badge for Gencon isn't the issue for the most part, I know last year was the 50th and it sold out. Not sure if it sold out so quick this year.

The 50th was 2 years ago. That was the first year of a badge sellout. 4-Day and Saturday badges have sold out since.

@Transmute Jun (https://www.friendsofcc.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=314) are you still on for this, maybe I go here this year. but who am i kidding
-
I am definitely on, and so is @DaveG (https://www.friendsofcc.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=737) ! So far, the organizers (who communicate well on their forums) have said that it is happening. Apparently, Indiana is looking to do a phase 1 open by May and the Governor is eager to get back to ‘normal’. There are other signs that game publishers are planning on it. For example, Fantasy Flight has cancelled all premiere tournaments through July 29... is that date a coincidence? ;)
If GenCon happens, we will be there! The hotel lottery is over, but event registration is in 4 weeks.
-
I don't know how I missed it, but I have added the calendar link. Fingers crossed for you guys!! <3

Not sure this is good or bad news, but Gen Con has postponed Event Registration scheduled for May 17. Normally, they would have posted the event schedule by May 3 (two weeks prior to registration). That is also being postponed. I take it that they are still assessing options and probably also trying to assess how many vendors and gamemasters will attend if it is held. They may also be exploring the possibility of postponing the event rather than cancelling.
Updates on Gen Con and COVID-19
Updated on April 30, 2020
We have been closely following the current outbreak of COVID-19, and we know that our attendees and community are as concerned as we are about the virus and the uncertainty that comes with it.
In light of announcements made by Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb, we want to assure our community that we are considering health guidelines from Indiana State officials as well as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as we monitor the situation and prepare for any contingencies.
While we evaluate safety measures related to the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak, both the release of the event catalog and the opening of event registration will be delayed. Thank you for your patience and understanding during this unprecedented time. We will update our community with the measures we are taking to keep everyone safe and healthy in the coming weeks.
In the meantime, please take care of yourselves and your loved ones. We wish you health and safety, and we will continue to post updates to this page as the situation develops.

I am seeing that standard message on most Conventions up until they cancel.

Well, the state of Indiana has posted their comprehensive re-open plan. If you have the time and care to peruse the multipage document, it's here.

The part that applies to Gen Con is here.
STAGE 5 JULY 4TH AND BEYOND
IF KEY PRINCIPLES OF HEALTH REMAIN POSITIVE
Conventions, sports events, fairs, festivals, the state fair, and like events may resume
There's a list of key principles in the document, so the currently indicated dates are still open to changes.

That's awesome news! I am sure that the GenCon organizers are breathing a sigh of relief.

Or, it could be the opposite. If they see vendors and gamemasters pulling out, they may want to cancel. They may have been waiting for the state to cancel for them so any insurance clauses would kick in and help cover losses. Now they need to make a decision on their own and/or suffer any resulting losses. So, I agree, it could be awesome news. I just don't know what the organizers are thinking.

GenCon has unfortunately been cancelled. There will be an online version taking place the same weekend.
-
and here I thought Indy was crazy enough to do it.
-
I read an article this morning that Indiana just gave approval to move forward with county fairs in the month of July, so I was encouraged. But I guess gaming and social distancing were a little more difficult to merge. I'm really hoping my con cancellations are done for the year. I have two more (October and November) and am really hoping they are held.
-
For me I think Celebration is toast as is Five Points. NYCC is going to be online.
IX is a fairly small convention in October, I am really really hoping that can take place as the owners are literally the nicest people you've ever met.
and Hoping by November PAX Unplugged can take place.

Gen Con released their schedule for their online event today. I was impressed by the variety of events offered. True Dungeon is doing their events separately, but Gen Con itself is offering a lot of different games/panels/seminars/entertainment events.
Badges are free (set up an account at gencon.com and register for the online con) so if you are interested, it is worth checking out.
