« on: March 24, 2012, 01:22:52 PM »
IFTTT is an anacronym for the term, If This Then That

So if CCI emails me then send me a text. Or If CCI posts on FB Call my Phone

Hey, two of those look familiar! Glad I can help, I'm certain that with a bit of creativity, some pretty convoluted tasks can be put together. (The top two 'tasks' of your post lead to 404 Page Not Found - what are they, Alyssa?)

Leonard,
Welcome to the forum!

yes, two of those are your recipes <grin>  Thanks for finding the iftty.com tool is it awesome. I've also set up recipes for other freebee things.

thx for the heads up on the 404, apparently i was copying 'tasks' instead of 'recipes'....  (i need a 'roll eyes' emote).
I modified a couple of exiting recipes so i'd get a phone call instead of a text instead of creating new recipes....

If you're interested in creating more recipes post them in thread and  I'll mod my original post to include them!

A conversation has come up, asking what exactly is the point of ifttt.com - on one hand, it makes sense for us when we're keeping immediate track of CCI activity on their twitter or RSS feeds (ifttt.com makes a check on these triggers every 15 mins). On the other, it could also come in handy on the dates of the Con itself, as a number of the triggers can be assigned to SMS texts and phone calls; we all know what the web reception is like inside the Con Centre (Exhibition Hall... non-existent!)

So, imagine this: you set up a ifttt.com trigger to search Twitter for a specific hashtag, #CCIFriends for example. We arrange to use that for quick intel, those with web access post using it, it activates, it sends you a text or phone call, even when you're out of internet reach... But it also works as a chain, too; you're out of range of t'web so you send an SMS with the #hashtag, it posts to Twitter (that's one task), that then triggers to alert onto the group via SMS / whatever (that's another)... get it now? The permutations are quite wide.

(Another note: difference between 'tasks' and 'recipes'; TASKS are what you have created with specific triggers to your details (email address, tel. no., etc.). RECIPES are what you submit to the public domain for anyone to use, customisable by the third party. These can also be specifically created and named so people can search and use them themselves - lazy bastards...)
