Any off-site teen events?
« on: May 30, 2013, 07:47:20 PM »
Hi all,

Sorry if this is covered under another topic-if so, please feel free to move it, or let me know and I can move it, whichever works.

Anyone know of any off-site events that teens can attend? This is my third Comic Con with my teen daughter, and she's too young to get into the 18+ or 21 and older events, but too old for the "Teen Titans-spunky-let's have ice cream in the evening" kind of activity (yes, I know that's not a real thing...  ;)).

She loves Adventure Time, but even the Adventure Time off site stuff wasn't very "evening glamorous," if you understand what I'm getting at.  She's a pop culture geek and wants to be in the middle of the action (with mom, of course), and I'm just not sure what's available for this in between age.

Any suggestions? Or do others have a similar dilemma and we should just have our own event?  :)

Thanks all-I appreciate it!

She's 14, but The Walking Dead freaks her out-my husband and I have to DVR it for later viewing when she's not around.

But that's a good idea, I didn't realize they went that young-maybe if she saw other teens doing it, and that the people playing the zombies weren't as bad as the show, she might be interested.

Thanks :)

Would check to see what's on the schedule for Nerd HQ and if any studios take the grassy area next to the convention center. There was pretty good programming there last year as well as the Batmobiles.

Otherwise aside from the after hours stuff, there isn't really anything that's NOT teen-appropriate.

I'd think the evenings can be reserved for dinner together and people watching or trying to get into movie screenings.
...you had me at hello...

Geek & Sundry might have stuff going on. I think last year they had a party that was open to all.

There will be an Emily and the Strangers launch party... not sure what night.

I think NerdHQ is all ages friendly until a certain time.

I friend of mine works with Geek and Sundry and their party was originally open to all, but they did have to cut off entry since it it filled up fast. She got to hang out with Joss Whedon, he got pretty toasted , he went from there to the Firefly Ballroom 20 line at 3:00am. Sorry I missed both of those events  >:D

Like I've said in another place, crossing fingers that Warner Bros has their stage set up next to the convention center again this year. That's really handy and fun.

I've also heard that Comedy Under Construction will have a comedy night..ALL AGES! And so you aren't ripped off for booze prices, you can bring your own (and you can bring your own food too!). They are a quick taxi drive away (less than 5 minutes) from the Gaslamp District, but they are looking into getting a spot in the district that serves food and alcohol. Possible con inspired swag too. Saturday night only. I will post more when I hear back.

If I remember correctly, it goes 21 and up at 8 p.m.  (My 16 year old sister comes to SDCC with me, so I've also faced the what to do in the evening challenge).

The Aquabats Super Show will be at the House of Blues on Saturday, July 20th, 7pm. It's great for all ages. Looks like they are going to have a panel at the con too.
