The past few years have seen vital exercises of First Amendment rights in protests and the art that rises around them. As with many artistic endeavors, activism and civic engagement have been an integral part of comics since the format’s origin, addressing issues as diverse as politics, women’s rights, civil rights, LGBTQ+ representation, racism, and so much more. In this panel, Cecil Castellucci (Shifting Earth, Batgirl), Nate Powell (Save It for Later, March), and others explore how comics can address social and political issues and how people can use comics to exercise their right to free expression.

For almost 100 years, space stations (as we think of them today) have been a staple of science fiction. In comic books, the Justice League have their Watchtower, S.H.I.E.L.D. has their Peak, and even villains like Magneto -- and of course Darth Vader—have been known to build fully "operational" orbital stations. At last, humans are now on the cusp of launching and inhabiting space stations that are privately developed, ones that hold the promise for regular citizens to live in space. Learn from Mike Massimino (former NASA astronaut), Ellie Morgan (program manager, Lockheed Starlab Team), Adrian Mangiuca (vice president of infrastructure for Voyager Space Holdings), Sana Sharma (designer & researcher at the MIT Media Lab Space Exploration Initiative), and moderator Steve Broback (co-founder of Dent the Future) discuss what the future holds, and we will also delve into the realities of living in space.

Between them, they are responsible for comics such as Breathtaker, Mars, Gregory, EZ Street, Radical Dreamer, Frankenstein Mobster, Tug & Buster, Blood of the Innocent, and so many more. They have had popular runs on Sandman, Jonny Quest, Tarzan, The Flash, Black Hood, and the list goes on. Their work has been featured in film and television as well as in museums across the country. Created in 1955, just a year after the official start of the Civil Rights Movement, DC Comics’ Martian Manhunter has never been just green. He’s also been Black all along. Panelist explore a plethora of allegorical connections to a particular Black experience and how the shapeshifting body of J’onn J’onzz can be read as an index for resistance against racialized trauma and oppression. John Jennings (UC-Riverside), Angélique Roché (independent artist), Jeremy Love (Bayou), Jim Thompson (Institue of Comics Studies), and Peter Coogan (Washington University) discuss how depictions of the Manhunter from Mars have always resonated with Blackness and how Carl Lumbly voicing him in the animated Justice League series laid the ground for the official and popular recognition of the racial coding that has been a part of his story since the beginning.

In 1940 MLJ Comics, the company later re-branded as Archie Comics, published Pep Comics #1 and created the First Patriotic superhero, The Shield. They would go on to create a pantheon of superheroes including fan favorites like the Black Hood, Comet, Hangman, Jaguar, and many more, collectively known as the Mighty Crusaders. These heroes' stories have been reprinted in England, France, Germany, and Brazil. They have crossed over to radio, film, and the pulps. Presented here is the 80-year history of the greatest superheroes of the Archie Universe by moderator Rik Offenberger (MLJ Companion) with panelists Vito Delsante (writer, The Fox), and Mark Waid (writer, Impact Comics).
