There's no guarantee they will get that price.  That's the free market.  They're risking not getting a reservation for those rooms.  It would be interesting to see how the prices go the closer we get to the Con.
Holy crap! You have to think only people with money to burn pays that, like a production studio.

To be fair, they can only get away with that price because there is very little competition. If there actually were a free market, then prices would be much lower... although obviously not as low as the prices in the CCI block.

Agree.  I think that if there were a true free market (no onPeak) for Downtown Hotels, they wouldn't get away with 1000 a night.  Not enough people would take it.  But, they probably would get away with more than they are charging through onPeak.  It would be interesting to know what a true market would bare.

I think if there was no OnPeak and SDCC hotel blocks, we could easily see $500 - $750 a night rooms. I don't think people would do $1000, but I bet $500? Easily.

To walk out the door to Hall H, many people would pay a lot. It already is one of the priciest even at CCI "controlled" rates. I stayed there last year and will again this year, but I wouldn't pay much more than I am now.

I think the thing a lot of us forget, is that many groups pack their hotel rooms with 4+ people. $500 split by 4 is only $125 a night. It affects people like myself much worse than those. I always stay at the hotel with only my lady friend and I. We've been asked multiple times to split it with others, but we're happy just having the two of us. Even with the both of us having decent jobs, $250+ per person totaling $500 a night at the hotel is still a killer.

I agree. I'd expect the close downtown hotels to be about $500-$600 per night and the further hotels to be in the $400-$500 range.

That's a possibility.  Another option would be 4 (or more) people getting together to share a room.  They'd have to really get along though.    :) :)

The stories I have been told about people sharing rooms. Lets say I've heard friendships ruined due to that.

Absolutely. I see a lot of posts of folks who are a group of four (or more), and I'm sure it's a lot of fun. I'm just too old to share a bed or sleep on the floor.

Some do. Supply and Demand really. The closer you get to the con, if there is still inventory, at that point, some hotels will charge less to ensure they get maximum capacity. At least some did last year.

Saaaame, I remember shoving 6 people in a room in my early con days.  I'm glad we don't do that anymore, it got less fun not having a bed.  And now with a four year old in the mix and a loudly snoring friend, yeah... two rooms is necessary xD;

Were you able to get a room this year?

How did you like the Horton? I have seen no reviews on the forum and looking for some insight. Seems small..

We stayed a couple days at the Horton last year.  It was close enough to walk but you did have to cross the railroad tracks. It's an older hotel so the rooms are kind of old.  The first room we were in, the ac wasn't working so we asked to move.  Then later in the night in the second room we had issues with the ac also and maintenance had to come.  It was nice looking overall and they had free water dispenser in the lobby, but I didn't want to stay there again this year.

My boyfriend and I have only gotten lucky with the hotel sale (phrasing) twice out of the last 6 years and it basically doubles the amount of money we have to spend on a room. We've started budgeting for the worst then if we get a lower rate it's bonus spending money! Luckily there are a few hotels that will book 12-6 months out that are also no-deposit and refundable up to 72 hours before check-in so we always have a back-up!

Room packing is my way of life lol.  I've found 5 people is the maximum.  Two people per bed, one on the floor, switch who sleeps on the floor or decide ahead of time who that'll be.  With people sleeping in lines on some nights it tends to work out nicely.
