I've only stayed at the Marriot once between the two. I would definitely choose that place again if lucky.
My friends and I would always buy alot of stuff so not having to take a shuttle and or walk long distances was a huge plus. The only downside to being that close was that we bought more than we should've aha
Besides being next to the convention center, you're closer to other places in Gaslamp (love going to Ralph's). Plus, I think there seems to be more Con stuff going in and around the Marriot.

To expand on me for the big 3:
3 - MMM. Has the best pool! Location is good for Funko Fundays, Video Game stuff, and panel pickups.  Beyond that it always felt like a munch longer walk for me.  Personal run ins there, Will Wheaton at the bar and Cladio Sanchez in the pool.
2 - HBF. Best Views.  Location is great for Hall H & Ballroom, FX area, Stadium events and the convention hall in general.  Probably my favorite room if you have3+ people in your group for size.  Personal run ins there, just Dan Harmon.
1 - Hard Rock.  Best Atmosphere.  Great location for off sites and very easy access to the show floor. Its across the train tracks....but just barely, easy walk everywhere.  Rooms are really small for bigger groups....but they are the nicest quality to me.  Personal run ins there: Walking Dead cast, Suicide Squad cast, Deadpool cast, Jason Mamoa, Ezra Miller, Chadwick Bossman, Harrison Ford.....and so many more.  Bonus points as many big parties are in the hotel and depending on what floor your room is on...you may be able to walk right in to some.

Dang.  The one year I got a room at the Hard Rock, I had no run-ins.
Also, my views from the MMM have usually been better than the year I was at the Bayfront.  Just depends on what side the room is on.

Agreed - I had a terrible view (Dole truck parking lot) every time I stayed at the Hilton Bayfront, bc I don't have Hilton status and I refuse to pay for the upgrade at check-in. But all the Marriott views I've had have been lovely (city side or ocean side).

I am most interested in the outside events, I do hope to see those back in some way... this will be my first con and I don't have a badge for most of it but will be participating in meetups and other stuff. I think in the end my hotel will be where my roomies want to stay since I'm flexible at this point.

Done HBF twice and LOVED it!! Rooms aren't the best but location is everything! I'm a Hall H person so it's amazing to be so close and can let line mates store items or clean up in the mornings. Also can do runs back and forth from exhibit hall and room in just a few minutes. I've never done MMM but on Sundays when we always go to pick up our panel swag it seems like quite the hike.

I thought the panel swag redemption was at the MGH, not the MMM?

Stayed at the Bayfront 2019 and it was awesome.  Great location to easily drop off stuff in your room and head back to Con quickly.  MMM also gets high praise from what I have seen, so I think you can't go wrong with either hotel.

I tried them once, the group I was with was all about it.  We rode from the MGH to the bayfront.  My group turned and said I need $20 from everyone.  Now I don't know if they were overpaying but $80 to get from the MGH to the Bayfront.  I have never again done one of those.
