Yup...from Atari.  Might be in the vein of the NES Classic console of recent times...but man would an Atari version of that be cool...

Atari is one of the key companies in the history of video games, and one of the initial giants in the console industry. Atari is arguably responsible for both the rise and fall of video games in the ’70s and ’80s. Atari has never entirely gone away; however, the company hasn’t released a new console in 24 years. But at E3, Atari indicated that a new console is finally on the horizon.

Via Mashable, Atari announced that the upcoming console will be called Atari Box, and its exterior looks a lot like the classic Atari consoles, including the wooden finish. The exact details of the Atari Box have not yet been announced, but presumably it will be powerful enough to carve out a place for itself in a landscape that includes Xbox One, Playstation 4, and Nintendo Switch.

“We’re back in the hardware business,” said Atari CEO Fred Chesnais during an interview with GameBeats. Chesnais didn’t offer many details beyond that, but he noted that it will incorporate PC technology and the design is still being developed. Chesnais is the latest owner of Atari, as the company has changed hands many times in the past thirty five years. Under the current leadership, Atari has primarily made its money through mobile games and licensing its brand. Getting back into the console wars is going to be an uphill battle, but we’re curious to see what Atari Box is bringing to the table.

Are you intrigued by the new Atari Box? Break out your old school joysticks and enter your thoughts in the comment section below!

Our objective is to create a new product that stays true to our heritage while appealing to both old and new fans of Atari.

Inspired by classic Atari design elements (such as the iconic use of wood, ribbed lines, and raised back); we are creating a smooth design, with ribs that flow seamlessly all around the body of the product, a front panel that can be either wood or glass, a front facing logo, indicator lights that glow through the material, and an array of new ports (HDMI, 4xUSB, SD). We intend to release two editions: a wood edition, and a black/red edition.

As you can guess, those ports suggest modern internal specs. It also means that while we will be delivering classic gaming content, we will also be delivering current gaming content.

We know you are hungry for more details; on specs, games, features, pricing, timing etc. We’re not teasing you intentionally; we want to get this right, so we’ve opted to share things step by step as we bring Ataribox to life, and to listen closely to Atari community feedback as we do so. There are a lot of milestones, challenges and decision points in front of us in the months ahead. We’ll be giving you lots more information and status updates as we progress, and we are thrilled to have you along for the ride!

Hope you like where we are taking this, we’ll be in touch soon.

The Ataribox Project team.

The pictures we're sharing today are of first prototypes. Everyone that has seen Ataribox first-hand loves it, feeling the Atari 2600 influence, while still being a modern design. Ataribox will be powered by an AMD customized processor, with Radeon Graphics technology. It'll run Linux, with a customized, easy-to-use user interface. This approach means that as well as being a great gaming device, Ataribox is also a full PC experience for the TV, bringing you streaming, applications, social, browsing, music, and more. Most TV devices have closed systems and content stores. Linux lets us be more open; you can access & customise the OS, & you can access games you've bought from other content platforms (if compatible with the OS and HW). There will be tons of classic Atari retro games pre-loaded, & current titles from a range of studios (we'll start talking titles very soon, stay tuned).

We're launching Ataribox on Indiegogo this fall (read: pretty soon). To reiterate why: we want you, the Atari community, to be part of this launch. We want you to have early access, grab special editions (& pricing) and to have you as active partners in the rollout of Ataribox. We want you to be part of the story. We plan on shipping late Spring 2018, with an expected price range of $249-$299 (depending on specific editions & memory configurations). Hope you like what we are sharing today, and are ready for lots more in the weeks ahead.

The Ataribox team.

PS: To confirm what many of you have asked: the Wood Edition is made with real wood ;)
PPS: Please continue to let us know what you think via our social channels; and also please like, follow, subscribe, and share as much as possible!

Ataribox Will Make Its Debut At GDC, Atari Flashback Classics Coming To Nintendo Switch

Atari has some busy times coming up, between its launch of its new Ataribox game console, along with some new games on the horizon, including RollerCoaster Tycoon for the Ninendo Switch and Tempest 4000. But today, in a press statement, it laid down its plans for the next few months, and let’s just say that fans of the company – and retro gaming in general – are going to have a lot to get excited over. First off, the company confirmed that it would be out in full force during next week’s Game Developers Conference, where it will not only debut its just announced Atari Flashback Classics 3 compilation, but also a first public look at the Ataribox in action.

These reveals, tied in with their other business ventures, will show just how much presence Atari is shooting for with this coming year. "We have made significant progress in each of our strategic businesses, and we continue to grow with a long-term vision, including with Ataribox or blockchains. These recent blockchain agreements demonstrate the strength of the Atari brand, which remains a key asset for positioning us in fast-growing technology sectors, " said Frederic Chesnais, Chief Executive Officer and Atari's largest shareholder. "As part of the GDC Conference, we will continue to explore opportunities in these areas and strengthen our partnerships. The Atari blockchain platform, online casino games using crypto-currencies are the very first stones of a unique construction, at the crossroads of Technology and Entertainment ".

On the game front, the company also confirmed that Tempest 4000 is still on the way, set for release this summer on PlayStation 4 and PC; and it also confirmed not only that RollerCoaster Tycoon was coming to the Nintendo Switch, but also Atari Flashback Classics, its 80s-themed retro package of games. It didn’t confirm as to whether we would see all the Atari games we saw in previous Flashback releases, but fans will be able to enjoy a number of favorites, including Tempest, Asteroids and Centipede, on the go or at home. A release date wasn’t given, but they did note that Christmas 2018 was an ideal window. Maybe we’ll see it sooner, like around summer.

But all eyes are on the Ataribox. The company has been talking about their secretive console for some time, and next week should give us a glimpse into what it’s capable of, as well as what Atari has in mind for its business model. Hopefully we’ll get a release date out of it as well, as it did tease we would see its “schedule and modalities.” We’ll keep you informed once we get new info straight from the event!

Saddle up for some sever nostalgia, Atari is back in the game and the first look at their new retro-inspired console has arrived. RIP the so-called “Ataribox”, as it was previously announced, the new gaming and entertainment platform is officially called the Atari VCS and features both a classic joystick and modern controller in the device prototype. The classic gaming company debuted the new console at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco and they’re aiming to reveal the pre-order date next month.

The new console takes inspiration from the silhouette of the silhouette of the original Atari 2600 system and updates it with a slim, sleek design for the modern home. And it’s not just a platform to freebase nostalgia. The plan is for the VCS to deliver the system’s classic content, but it’s also a “completely new Atari connected device designed for today’s living room.” Likewise, the new Atari VCS logo is designed to bring the past into the present with a nod to “Atari’s rich history of progressive graphic design.”

Atari’s COO of Connected Devices Michael Arzt said in a press release:

“Every person at Atari and every partner involved with the new platform is just as fanatical about the brand and its heritage as our biggest fans are. With the Atari VCS name, we know how important it is to get everything completely right and that’s why we briefly paused an imminent launch late last year. It was a difficult decision with the countdown underway, but we weren’t willing to go forward with even one thing out of alignment. We hope that Atari’s fans appreciate our extreme attention to detail and are as excited about the Atari VCS as we are.”

The last time Atari shipped one of their own consoles was the Atari Jaguar back in 1993, so their return to the fold is rather a to-do for fans of classic gaming. No word yet on the price point, so stay tuned for Atari’s pre-order announcement in April and check out more of the first look images below.
