Comic-Con said Thursday it is still weighing its options and hopes to make an announcement soon. It is also exploring the possibility of an “online component” should the convention not take place, said spokesman David Glanzer.I don't want to debate the good & bad: I think at this point we all know Comic-Con isn't going to happen in 2020 AS WE KNOW IT. I don't want to get into policy since at least as far as we, the general public, know this is little more than "spit-balling" and we have no clue what CCI's policy will be in regards to the cancelation of physical SDCCI 2020, badge returns, etc.
* Autographs?! Why not! Obviously they'd be pre-signed and could still be 'raffled off' either for charity or via the good ol' online portal
* Panles?! Seems easy enough given how much the world will have been familiarized w/Zoom and other live-streaming services. Some artists & companies can pre-record "panels" with pre-determined questions from a moderator of some sort. Footage can be shown via encryption or whatnot: heck, nowadays many companies release footage immediately following the panel anyway so that might not even be an issue. Fans could live-tweet questions, or maybe even use some other sort of live-meeting streaming app to ask a question from talent.
* Meet & Greets? Why not?! Using Zoom or something organizers could set up something were online portal winners can win a pre-signed poster or something and get 15 or 20 seconds to say hi and get a personal chat with talent. Would this take work, planning, etc? Yes: a lot. Can it be done? I think so
* Exclusives? Again, why not?! Funco sold their WonderCon exclusives online last week to anyone there's no reason why other companies already planning (and potentially manufacturing) exclusives couldn't go about their business and do online sales: even keep it w/in the online portal to keep it truly exclusive to SDCCI badge-holders
* Artist Alley? YES! Artists could still sell their stuff, take sketch commissions, etc. online. It would be more cumbersome, of course, and if you wanted, say, Marv Wolfman's signature you'd have to "settle" maybe for a poster of his choosing vs your Crisis On Infinite Earths #1 (which he signed for me at WonderCon 2019) but it's still something!
* Masquerade Ball? I think this could be done virtually.
Many of these things have happened at virtual cons that have already occurred due to covid. The autographs don't have to be pre-signed. You do a video chat with the celeb and they sign it during the video chat. Then they mail it to you. That video chat is the meet and greet.Very cool! Didn't know that; thanks!
There has already been a VR offsite at comic-con. It happened a few years ago. It was basically a VR mini-con. They had panels, they had celebs to chat with, they had all that con stuff.
Virtual Hall H, and more with no lines. 24/7 exhibit hall and artist alley. The ability to be chosen to ask live questions and such. I would definitely be interested, and pay.
There is no way I'd go if it were virtual. That would be the end of SDCC for me.
Not my first choice, but probably better than nothing. I'd check it out. I might pay money for it (but not anything close to $300) if it helps keeps things running. I'm more likely to pay if they mail a badge and program book...including a swag bag would be nice too. In 2015 I couldn't go but I bought those things from eBay.Yeah, I’d pay too if I got some of those items as well. I’m a runner, and quite a few cancelled races offered virtual races. You run on your own (can even be an at-home treadmill), send in your time, and they’ll mail you a swag bag with tshirt / medal / other goodies. Yup, you’re basically paying for the swag. It’d be similar here where I might check out a few virtual panels, but I would be more or less paying for the novelty badge / bag / whatever other items.
I think panels are the part that seem the least worthwhile of a virtual con. At least to me, anyway. The main appeal of comic con panels is seeing the celebs in person. When celebs promote their projects, they do interviews and participate in general panels all the time and we can watch these interviews and panels online easily. There's really nothing special about a virtual con panel compared to these typical interviews and panels.
And I'd be happy to pay a fee to participate in a virtual con. Not $300, but if I can provide some funding to assist in their efforts, and to help them return in future years, I'm good with that.
I'm glad people are coming around. When I brought up virtual comic-con a few weeks ago, people were not enthusiastic.
So how is watching the panels virtually that much different from watching it on a screen in a big hall?
So how is watching the panels virtually that much different from watching it on a screen in a big hall? They could set up something in VR where you are watching the panel on a big VR screen surrounded by other people watching it in VR. People watch movies in VR like that already. The effect is convincing including shushing people. You can also mute them but that takes away from the group experience.
It'll be interesting to see how this works out--

VIRTUAL FAN EXPO 2020 is the ultimate celebration of pop culture community - but in a safe, inclusive, virtual environment."
After reading the other SDCC cancellation thread, it did make me wonder: why would Hollywood studios participate in an exclusive con? At this point, the studios have lost a lot of money not being able to release their movies. I would expect them to want to mass promote their movies instead of keeping content exclusive for specific comic con fans. Why bother with celeb meet & greets and autograph giveaways to comic con fans then they can open these contests and giveaways up to fans worldwide? Same with exclusive panels when they can hold a general panel and put it on Youtube and allow everyone to watch?
Panels is one thing. That is doable virtually. But how they going to do the rest of it? Are they going to have the Funko and other lotteries virtual? Would they set up a storefront for every vendor? Would they honor the badge days? Sounds like a cluster%@#$ to me. Swag and offsite events would be gone.
Most definitely not worth the badge price. And what about those with lousy or no internet connection?
Most definitely not worth the badge price.
Swag and offsite events would be gone.
I think Wondercon posted a bunch of old panels too, but it definitely wasn't a major web presence. And, sadly, there wasn't much follow through. They encouraged people to dress up at home and post pictures for their "cosplay contest", saying they would feature ten of them... it's been over a week and they haven't featured anyone.

As for the cosplay, to be fair, if you checked the tag, there were hardly any entries. They gave like NO notice on any of it though.
San Diego Comic-Con 2020 might not be happening, but that doesn’t mean that there won’t be a Comic-Con this year — it’s just that it’ll happen online, with organizers Comic-Con International teasing something called, simply, Comic-Con@Home 2020.
The virtual event was announced via YouTube video last week, with a teaser that promised “free parking, comfy chairs, personalized snacks, no lines” — something that, under traditional Comic-Con situations would sound like a dream. But Comic-Con@Home shouldn’t be considered this year’s incarnation of the traditional southern Californian pop culture show, according to show organizers.
"I don't think we've really thought of it in terms of a replacement for the show,” Comic-Con International’s David Glanzer told The Hollywood Reporter via email. “I think it is an iteration that we hope will convey some of the excitement of Comic-Con in whatever format we and our stakeholders can create. We are reaching out to various entities who are usually involved in the physical show to see if, and how best, we can incorporate them into an online version.”
San Diego Comic-Con was set to take place July 23-26, but was canceled last month. Even though COVID-19 has been closing down conventions since March’s Emerald City Comic-Con, Glanzer said that Comic-Con at Home wasn’t something that CCI had been developing for awhile; instead, it’s been a surprise addition to the organization’s calendar.
“When we had to make the difficult decision to postpone WonderCon Anaheim [in April], we were a little taken aback. We never had to outright halt production on an event in the works. Then, after a time, we began to think about how we could still engage fans who wanted the experience of the WonderCon community. So the WonderCon@Home initiative was born,” he explained. “We still hoped we could have the [San Diego] Comic-Con event this summer and really hadn't spent a lot of time exploring an online component. Especially when we were already engaged in WonderCon@Home and Comic-Con Museum@Home.”
WonderCon@Home featured a mix of virtual panels and archive material from previous shows posted in the week surrounding the originally scheduled in-person event, while Comic-Con Museum@Home includes video and downloadable content centered around exhibits and material found inside the Balboa Park location. It’s unclear if either of these examples will be models for Comic-Con@Home, with details of the virtual event remaining under wraps — for one very good reason: CCI has yet to decide exactly what Comic-Con@Home is going to look like.
“There are several different ideas floating about [concerning the format and timing of the event] but we are still in the nuts-and-bolts planning phase, which is why our tease about Comic-Con@Home was deliberately void of any specifics,” Glanzer said. “But there are certainly a great many options from which to choose.”
Whatever the event ends up being, it’ll likely inform the future of Comic-Con as a whole, Glanzer believes. “I imagine there will be an online component to all our shows from now on,” he said. “It's interesting that the Comic-Con Museum, which is slated to open to the public in 2021, had always envisioned a virtual component. They've had to move things along a little faster than originally planned but I think there could be a permanent online element moving forward.”
More information about Comic-Con@Home 2020 is expected to be revealed in the coming weeks.

San Diego Comic-Con’s upcoming virtual event, Comic-Con@Home, will be almost entirely prerecorded, TheWrap has learned exclusively.
SDCC expects to run 300 to 400 online panels between July 23-26 and almost all of them will be pre-recorded by studios and networks and submitted in advance, a spokesperson for Comic-Con International told TheWrap Monday.
According to the representative, the organization does not currently “anticipate anything live” for Comic-Con@Home, but it is possible there will be “live elements to some programming.”
This means that fan Q&As, obviously, are out, though the spokesperson says some studios and shows have reached out to their communities via social media to ask for questions in advance.
This year’s San Diego Comic-Con was canceled in April due to the coronavirus pandemic, marking the first time the annual pop culture event won’t happen as planned in its 51-year history. In May, Comic-Con International revealed it would be holding a virtual con in lieu of the in-person event, with “personalized snacks, free parking and no lines,” among other lockdown-friendly perks.
The official schedule for Comic-Con@Home will begin rolling out this Thursday, two weeks ahead of the event, as is traditional for the in-person con as well. But a few studios and networks have already revealed which TV shows and movies they will be bringing and readers can find that list here.

This is disappointing news...almost nothing will be live? I was wondering and looking forward to seeing how they would pull off live events on a larger scale than other online events, and that is my answer. It ain't happening.

Honestly, I'm kinda glad most of it isn't live. It means less chance for technical errors, or panels being Zoom Bombed depending on how they're doing things.
If that means they're already recorded to make it easier for everyone, including the guests who might now be stuck at home with family/kids, or getting back to actually filming, then so be it.
I doubt they are gathering people together to record the panels. That doesn't make sense. So they are doing it the same way panels and streams have been done during this pandemic. Everyone is at home and it's a video conference. That's how Amazon did The Boys panel a few days ago. So it would be just as easy to do it live as to record it.
Doing it live makes it an event. Watching a recording just makes it another youtube video.
I never said they were gathering people somewhere to film? But if someone is filming at home, where kids/family are around, I don't mind/care if being recorded ahead of time helps with that. Not every panel is a panel with a celebrity who has someone to wrangle people. Some of these panels are going to have every day people who are still trying to balance everything going on in their lives on top of trying to take part in this.
It's hilarious that we're going back and forth about this when in the end, it doesn't matter. It is what it is.
GET READY FOR COMIC-CON@HOME 2020 PROGRAMMING! The Comic-Con@Home 2020 Programming Schedule
We’re two weeks away from the debut of Comic-Con@Home 2020! And even though this is a very different year, we’re happy to announce we’ll be sticking with the Comic-Con tradition of announcing our panel schedule two weeks in advance. Over the next five days, we’ll reveal our daily online programming line-up for Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, July 22–26, with complete programming descriptions. The panels themselves will not be available until those dates, but you’ll be able to read all about them and build your own schedule of programs you want to watch during Comic-Con@Home 2020!
Comic-Con@Home 2020 will feature over 350 separate panels spread out over all five days of the event. There will be something for everyone! Here’s how it works:
Once the daily schedules go live, you’ll be able to read the descriptions and decide what you’d like to see. The majority of our panels will also be available AFTER the July 22-26 dates, although there are some that may have a limited time period attached to them. Each panel will contain a link; when you click on that link, you’ll launch another page that has the panel video embedded on it … that video will be available on the date and time listed. When it’s available, simply push play and watch! It’s that simple.
All the panels will also be available on the Comic-Con YouTube channel, so you can also access them there. Subscribe to us on YouTube.com at https://www.youtube.com/user/ComicCon

I think one big problem with live panels is timings for those who are not based in the US. So a scheduled live panel on late afternoon PST, would be early hours GMT.
Just thinking how a live panel could go down the pan if all participants have bad Internet and it keeps dropping out. At least with a pre-record it can be edited to look like no problems.

You can deal with it the same way that a heckler is dealt with at a live panel, it's even easier online. A moderator mutes anyone causing trouble. There are live streams on youtube all the time. The technical issues have been worked out. There aren't that many stream breakers. Even if an occasional stream breaks, just move on to another stream.

If it's just a heckler who's asking stupid questions, sure. But if they get hit by something like a porno zoom bomber, that can cause lasting damage, even if they're turned off right away.
It's on youtube and not zoom. Youtube streams are one way. They stream out. It's not a joint conference call where everyone sees all the other viewers. So unless it's a panelist porno bombing, that's not a factor.
Streaming on Youtube and Zoom aren't mutually exclusive. You can have your cast on a Zoom meeting and broadcast it on Youtube.
On Zoom you can specify who will be a participant of the meeting. Only those people are shown. Everyone else is a spectator. Why would they set it up so that everyone is a participant? Are live mics handed out to every single person in a Hall H panel?
Also, if it were obfuscated like that, how would any wannabe troublemaker even find the Zoom meeting to connect to?
Anyways, before we go further down the Zoom what could be rabbit hole. The only thing we know for sure is that Youtube is the platform, not Zoom.
But if you pre-record the panel, you can edit out anything you don't want seen, so the chance isn't there.
I already mentioned in my previous post that groups can meet on Zoom and have that streamed live on YouTube. I'm watching an example of this being used right now. (The DKECon Preview.)
By the same token people can cause trouble at live panels. So should live panels be scripted and well rehearsed? Should anyone asking questions be vetted and approved? Should the audience be trained to respond appropriately? People record those live panels and post them on Youtube. CCI has no control over that.
The reason live panels are good is the spontaneity. If it were scripted, rehearsed and sanitized then it wouldn't be a panel. It would be a play.
Which doesn't change the fact Zoom has not be mentioned in connection with @home. Only Youtube. Speculating about Zoom being used and then speculating about what could happen with Zoom is speculation on top of speculation.

Should the audience be trained to respond appropriately? People record those live panels and post them on Youtube. CCI has no control over that.CCI has every control over panels posted on YouTube.
Speculation that Zoom will be used is relevant because Zoom is probably the most common program currently to get groups of people to meet remotely. If none of the panels end up using Zoom to record, please feel free to tell me "I told you so" after SDCC@home.

The source doesn't matter. It's being broadcast through youtube. As I already pointed out, when it's bounced off of youtube the source is obfuscated.
How will any troublemaker be able to ID and thus connect to the Zoom meeting to cause trouble? IP cams are notoriously easy to hack since many people don't change the default password. Does that mean that a live youtube stream sourced from an IP cam is easy to hack into? No. Youtube doesn't give out the IP address of the source cam. Youtube doesn't give out the ID of the Zoom meeting. So unless the IP cam streamer makes the title of the youtube stream the IP address of his camera, no one is finding it through the youtube live stream. Similarly, unless a Zoom meeting streamed through youtube makes the title the ID or URL of the Zoom meeting, how will anyone watching it on youtube find the Zoom meeting? If you can't find the meeting, you can't cause trouble.
The cases you brought up of problems on Zoom were because the Zoom meeting was well known and thus easy to find. Finding the source of a stream on youtube is not. A troublemaker would be better off trying to hack the youtube account. Then they could do anything to the live stream or any recording for that matter.
If prerecorded, it’s not a possibility.

Con: See above. You ever park yourself in Hall H or Ballroom 20 for a day mostly to get a good seat and wait for a panel that comes on later in the afternoon. At first, you groan over the prospect of putting up with uninteresting panels. And then comes that one panel you otherwise probably wouldn't have seen and it actually sounds interesting. The cast seems cool. You decide to give it a try and suddenly you have another must see show. Probably going to happen much less this year.
Here is programming for Sunday, July 26, 2020, for Comic-Con International. All times listed are PDT.

“We always had this [monetary] buffer, so if we had to cancel the show for some catastrophic reason, we’d have enough money to meet our obligations and a little bit of seed money the next year,” Glanzer says. “I don’t think we ever thought we’d have to cancel two shows. It was really, really frightening.”
Comic-Con brought in a reported $19 million in revenue in 2017, and according to the San Diego Convention Center Corp., the event generated an estimated $149 million for the region in 2019. But even if COVID-19 testing and treatments improve, it’s profoundly uncertain when, or whether, any fan conventions could reach those heights again.
“If this were to continue and we weren’t able to have a convention, I don’t know what the future would be,” Glanzer says with a deep sigh. “It’s possible that [Comic-Con@Home] is laying the groundwork for something that could exist in the future. We’re learning a great deal.”
Scener's Watch Platform is an all-new way to connect and build community around streaming entertainment, allowing Comic-Con@Home attendees to meet with friends and fellow fans to not only participate in official programming, but host their own watch parties with up to a million guests. Also announced today, Scener now supports seven major subscription video-on-demand services: Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max, Hulu, Prime Video, Funimation, and Vimeo.
“We’re excited to have Scener as part of the Comic-Con@Home initiative.” David Glanzer, spokesperson for the non-profit Comic-Con said in a statement. “One of the major reasons for launching the online version was to maintain the Comic-Con sense of community. Scener literally brings people together, so while we may not be able to meet in person this summer, Scener allows us to meet, and share our passions virtually.”
Comic-Con@Home's Virtual Screenings, supported by Scener, will feature two tracks that fans can participate in -- a film track and an anime track -- with a live community chat. Something that Joe Braidwood, Scener co-founder described for ComicBook.com as being like "your favorite movie meets Twitch."

It's a nice video... but it just makes me sad for everything we have lost. When people talk about the 'new normal' I am sometimes afraid that we will never have it again. This video brought on that depressing feeling.
I hope that the video is right and that we will be back in San Diego next year. I miss all of you!

We WILL be together again next year! Have Faith! :)

You're Invited To ComicBook At Comic-Con 2020 - A Live-Stream Aftershow
When are they showing the masquerade? I can't find it on the schedule.
According to Comic-Con Spokesperson/Chief Communications and Strategy Officer David Glanzer, the process of transitioning the event to an online forum held out as long as possible. As stay-at-home orders were implemented across the country, the event was hopeful they’d have to make some modifications but could still hold a physical Comic-Con. This explains why, to fans and others who go to Comic-Con, they seemed slower to announce a virtual event in comparison to other big comic conventions like Wizard World.
“The thought of an online version began shortly after the governor of California said something to the effect that he couldn’t imagine concerts or large gatherings at least until August,” Glanzer said. “It was a heartbreaking realization and it took a little time to digest that. But almost immediately we thought two things, a) is an online version possible? and b) if so, how do we make it happen?”
Comic-Con isn’t just a place to indulge in genre fare like comic books. In the last decade it’s become a major marketing tool for films and television shows to showcase their upcoming features. It’s one element fans are certainly missing with this festival. The majority of the panels are pre-recorded via Zoom, leaving no audience Q&As or a way for fans and talent to come together. Much of the online experience people are seeing this weekend is the result of working in uncharted territory in a short amount of time, according to Glanzer.
And while SDCC is, at the moment, set to return in its physical form next year many questions remain. As Glanzer says, “No in-depth discussions have taken place regarding during an entire online event next year” but he is open to the possibility of doing more with an online component in some form going forward. He says they will be looking at social media response and emails to judge the success of this year’s event and where things could turn going forward.

Very, very cool. I'll have to drive down there and take a look.
I hope they do something like this next year. It's like VRchat or Bigscreen without having to have VR. It would make virtual panels a much better experience.
