Last year, Dragon Ball made waves at San Diego Comic-Con with some awesome exclusives from Bandai and Tamashii Nations, as well as their touring exhibit, which made a stop by the Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina’s hotel terrace for a very cool activation. It was the first time Dragon Ball Z had gone all out at the convention — and there’s more to come.

2019 marks the 30th anniversary of Dragon Ball Z, so it makes sense that Toei Animation, the Japanese studio responsible for the series, has big celebration plans for the year. License Global recently spoke with several sources at Toei, who confirmed 2019 will see “a host of major events, licensing deals, promotions, product launches and activations fit for a property of this magnitude”.

And part of those plans do indeed include San Diego Comic-Con again, as they’ll be back at the Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina Terrace again all five days (though it should be noted last year that Wednesday was Media Preview only, and could be again).

“This was the first time there was such a big push for anime at San Diego Comic-Con,” Yamatoya told License Global about 2018. “At first, we were very skeptical about how people were going to respond because we felt it is a Hollywood-focused kind of event. But San Diego Comic-Con told us they wanted us back. We thought anime was too niche to do so well, but we are planning on a bigger presence.”

While exact details of the fan experience are still TBA, we do know you’ll be able to stop by to score this free event exclusive bag:

Looks like it is open on preview night - does anyone know if that is meaning like 6pm or later, or it might be open earlier? You need a badge to get into the dragonball area right? (badges might not be available for pickup earlier though I recall it varies, some years I got my badge as early as 2pm, others it was not available until close to 6pm).

You don't need a badge. Anyone can walk in/out and around it. It is outside behind the Marriott near the marina

I was at the world record event and took part in it, pretty awesome.

We got there half an hour early for the press event at 4pm. Got to go around and see everything while it was being set up. Played the game for a while and got our scouters. Unfortunately we did not get our bag or other items as they gave some out to a few press and then none after that, but we did get an orange dragonball shirt for the event.

Anyone else get a scouter? There is a part to it that has a screw with a tag suggesting you might be able to put a 1.5 vbattery in there if you screw it open (it lists 1.5 v there). We are wondering if it might actually be a bluetooth headset or somehow otherwise use that battery?

By the way I found out what the Scouter battery is for - it is for making scouter noises when you press on the button. Blue-tooth was a bit of a dream for something handed out in large quantities for free  ;D

This was a great event, I am glad to have partaken it in and be part of DB history.
