The cast of “Gotham” is coming together, with Jada Pinkett Smith the most recent addition to Fox’s upcoming Batman series.

The one-hour drama, from Warner Bros. Television, focuses on the origins of Batman’s police department ally, Commissioner James Gordon, and the villains who made Batman’s hometown famous.

Pinkett Smith will play Fish Mooney - an original character you won’t find in the comics. Fish Mooney is described as “a sadistic gangster boss and nightclub owner” and will be a series regular.

“Fish Mooney’s got the street smarts and almost extra-sensory abilities to read people like an open book,” her official character description reads. “Imposing and hotheaded, she’s not one to be crossed.”

Pinkett Smith joins a cast that includes Ben McKenzie, known for roles in “Southland” and “The O.C.,” as Jim Gordon; Robin Lord Taylor (“Another Earth,” “Accepted”) as Oswald Cobblepot, the orphaned outcast who works for Fish Mooney and eventually becomes the gentleman villain the Penguin; Sean Pertwee (“Alan Partridge,” “Event Horizon”) as tough ex-marine and Wayne Manor butler Alfred Pennyworth; Zabryna Guevara (“Burn Notice,” “3 lbs.”) as Capt. Essen, Gordon’s boss at the Gotham City Police Department homicide squad; Erin Richards as Gordon’s fiancée Barbara Kean, an emergency room doctor; and Donal Logue (“Sons of Anarchy”) as Gordon’s partner and mentor Det. Harvey Bullock.

“Gotham” will be led by writer and executive producer Bruno Heller, the creative mind behind “The Mentalist” and “Rome.” Danny Cannon (“Nikita”) will direct and executive produce the pilot.

Fox’s Batman prequel series “Gotham” has cast two major characters - Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle, the young people who eventually become Batman and Catwoman.

David Mazouz, 14, will play a preteen Bruce Wayne who lives a solitary life after his wealthy parents are murdered.

“Serious and soulful, young Bruce relies on the guidance and protection of Alfred Pennyworth and James Gordon,” his official character description reads.

Mazouz is best known for his role as an autistic but gifted boy in the Kiefer Sutherland-starring Fox series “Touch.” His “Gotham” character Bruce Wayne, of course, eventually becomes Batman in DC Comics lore, but the series is focused on the origin of Gordon, Fox notes, not the origin of Batman.

Acting newcomer Camren Bicondova will play Selina Kyle, the girl who eventually becomes Catwoman, but in “Gotham” Selina is a teenaged orphan who is “suspicious and wholly unpredictable,” according to her character description. “A street thief and skilled pickpocket, she’s dangerous when cornered.”

Bicondova, oft-nicknamed “Cam Cam,” is best known for her background in dance, appearing as ” on “America’s Best Dance Crew,” in the film “Battlefield America” and in numerous music videos.

Mazouz and Bicondova join a cast that includes Ben McKenzie, known for roles in “Southland” and “The O.C.,” as Jim Gordon; Donal Logue (“Sons of Anarchy”) as Gordon’s partner and mentor Det. Harvey Bullock; Jada Pinkett Smith as original character Fish Mooney, a sadistic gangster boss and nightclub owner; Robin Lord Taylor (“Another Earth,” “Accepted”) as Oswald Cobblepot, the orphaned outcast who works for Fish Mooney and eventually becomes the gentleman villain the Penguin; Sean Pertwee (“Alan Partridge,” “Event Horizon”) as tough ex-marine and Wayne Manor butler Alfred Pennyworth; Zabryna Guevara (“Burn Notice,” “3 lbs.”) as Capt. Essen, Gordon’s boss at the Gotham City Police Department homicide squad; Erin Richards as Gordon’s fiancée Barbara Kean, an emergency room doctor; and .

“Gotham” will be led by writer and executive producer Bruno Heller, the creative mind behind “The Mentalist” and “Rome.” Danny Cannon (“Nikita”) will direct and executive produce the pilot.

4 min trailer

Gotham
Based upon characters published by DC Entertainment and produced by Warner Bros. Television, GOTHAM is an origin story of the great DC Comics Super-Villains and vigilantes, revealing an entirely new chapter that has never been told. Starring Ben McKenzie ("Southland," "The O.C."), Donal Logue ("Sons of Anarchy," "Terriers," "Vikings," "Copper") and Jada Pinkett Smith ("The Matrix" films, "HawthoRNe"), GOTHAM follows one cop's rise through a dangerously corrupt city teetering on the edge of evil and chronicles the birth of one of the most popular super heroes of our time. Executive producer Bruno Heller ("The Mentalist") wrote the pilot, which was directed and executive-produced by Emmy Award nominee Danny Cannon (the "CSI" franchise, "Nikita"). John Stephens will serve as an executive producer on the series.

THE ORIGIN STORIES BEGIN THIS FALL ON FOX.

i understand where you guys are coming from with the merge idea but i also want to start a thread for shows ordered to series. <i need a 'thinking' emotocon>

do you think Gotham will be at sdcc and/or have enough buzz to warrant a separate thread? if the answer is 'yes' to either of these than, yes merge them.  I can start another 'ordered to series' down the road.

As a Batman fan, I'm excited for this. I do not just like Batman but also his world plus his supporting characters. No Batman just means I don't have to see Ben Affleck try to pretend to be the Dark Knight

here's another 3+ min preview.  I like the devotion to character back stories in this 3 min trailer labeled 'first look...'
