Title: NYCC Random chat
Post by: alyssa on August 16, 2018, 04:59:56 AM
As the title says... random ideas, thoughts or observations

Like I don’t think I’m going to be able to attend nycc this year. /sigh/
After the move to San Diego, the finances just are not there for a trip back east.

If so, I’ll have to live vicariously- who’s planing on going?

I'm going, as usual.  I got approved again for a Professionals badge.

I have to admit that because NYCC is my "home" con, I don't get as excited for it as I do going to San Diego.  I don't get a hotel and just take the LIRR from home every day.

So far, I've only put in for taking Thursday off from work.  That's the least crowded day and best day to explore the exhibition hall, IMO.  Whether I add Friday as a day off will depend on whether there are any "must see" panels that day.

I'll be going, because the weird work circumstances that allowed me to attend in 2015 happened again. If you decide to go and need a roomie, Alyssa, you can stay with me.

We're going! Last year was our first time. It was a last minute decision to buy Thursday badges since those were still available, and then did touristy stuff the other days. Actually, we ended up chasing around that Westworld offsite a couple of mornings, haha. This year (after being rejected for Press again) we were able to plan ahead and get all 4 days. We're actually staying out in NJ to save money. $115/night vs $300/night really helps!

I'm going again this year and so far have only Friday and Saturday.  The two panels that always interest me are Marvel Netflix and Archer.

I always stayed in Jersy- union city to be exact- there's a 24 hr shuttle bus that goes from union city to Port Authority for $3, 20 min tops ;)

We are staying in Secaucus, in the same area of hotels where we stayed last year, also taking the bus to Port Authority. :) It worked out so well last year that we decided to do the same thing this year.

During SDCC, I bought the 13th Doctor cosplay outfit from Her Universe at the last minute on Preview Night and cosplayed as 13 the next day for the Doctor Who panel. So I was excited to see that David Tennant is on the guest list for NYCC! We don't usually pay for photo ops (the only one we've ever done is a group photo with Stan Lee a few years ago, back when it was "only" $80), but I definitely want to get one with him while cosplaying as 13! My husband wants to get in on this photo op too and cosplay as either 10 or 11. We're kinda hoping that Jodie Whittaker is announced for NYCC so we can get a duo photo op! I mean, the new season is supposed to premiere in the fall, so it's possible, right? :D

I'm going! NYCC is my "working con" because I'm the only person from the blog who attends, so I'm usually drowning in press rooms. It's always a lot of fun, though!

I'm going for the first time! Friday/Saturday. I'll be flying into Philly to meet up with my friends who live there, then taking the train in for the Con.

I actually just got back from an NYC trip (to see Harry Potter and the Cursed Child), so it's exciting to be going back so soon!

I'll be there. I'm there every year and for all 4 days. Last year I tried soo hard to get one of those Westworld hats. They closed line 3 people ahead of me on Sunday. (But I did find the store that makes those hats). I live in Brooklyn, so I just hop on the F/B/Q train and transfer to the 7 at 42nd Street, but still quite far away since it takes me about 75-80 minutes on the train. Living in New York isn't quite soo glamorous for me.   :-[

You'll be missed Alyssa! This will be my second year at NYCC, and last year I only got Fri-Sat so I'm excited to hit all 4 days. Waiting for the schedule to drop so I can figure out when I'll be coming in Thursday.

Ahhh, I am trying to figure out what show we want to see while we're in NYC for NYCC, and I'm debating whether or not to splurge on Harry Potter! It's not only expensive, since you have to pay for both parts, but also a large time commitment. Also, while I like the Harry Potter universe, I'm not a die hard Harry Potter fan. Like, I didn't grow up with Harry Potter, as I was a bit older when the books and movies came out, and never actually read the books or saw the movies until the past couple years because our younger friends, who are of the Harry Potter generation, kept saying we should. Anyway, I guess my question is, would you recommend the show/is it worth it for someone who is merely a casual fan?

There were a few jokes/references that I think were appreciated a bit more by Harry Potter fans but I would definitely recommend it. It doesn't quite hold up as a completely separate story, it is very much a continuation of the series, so I wouldn't recommend it for someone with no knowledge of the story but you don't need to be a real die hard fan to enjoy it.

If you're there a day early there's a Wednesday two-part show that would be good, otherwise the time commitment is definitely a factor. I think you can do part 1 and 2 over Thurs & Fri night which wouldn't be too bad if you don't have anything NYCC related for the evenings.

Thanks for the input! I did end up reading all the books (including Cursed Child) and seeing all the movies, so I know the story. Yeah, we're getting in on Tues night, so I was thinking of doing the 2 parts on Wed. Since we don't know the NYCC schedule yet, I don't want to commit to anything on Thurs/Fri/Sat nights just in case there are panels we're interested in those nights. What were your seats like?

Awesome yea my group was 50/50 people who had read the script ahead of time. We were in the back of the Orchestra/main theater. It was actually a smaller theater than I expected so it didn't look like there was a bad seat in the house. 1-2 parts had some things floating up by balconies that we didn't have the best view of but it wasn't anything pivotal.

I’ll be at the con! I’m curious to see how many Outlander fans are going to be there...I have to admit while I’ve read the book I have yet to get through the first episode of the series, but I think the actors seem cool.

I’m hoping for some Game of Thrones actors. Any word on Agents of Shield? They’re usually there and they skipped San Diego this year again. I wonder if ABC is even going to bother with a shortened order of episodes.

I sat in the very last row of the orchestra for Part 1 when I saw it. The stage did NOT seem that far away even though I guess it technically was. There is a special effect you miss if you're sitting under the dress circle overhang (which I believe starts at row T, or somewhere thereabouts).

I sat in the balcony for Part 2 (I was with a group of 5 that had 3 orch seats and 2 balcony seats, so we switched), and there is definitely something that happens that you miss in the balcony. (Not saying anything else, because #keepthesecrets)

All this to say, there are pros and cons of both. But even if you miss one or two things, trust me, you won't even care.

If you have even a passing interest in Harry Potter, and can get reasonably priced tickets, go. See it. The magic that they pull off on that stage is INSANE. I'm already trying to figure out how I can see it again.

Also, a long shot, but they do have a lottery called the Friday 40, where they release 40 tickets for $40 total (20 per part). The NYCC shows will open up in the lottery the Friday before (so, September 28). Starting at midnight Thursday night/Friday morning Eastern time, you can enter the lottery for shows 10/3-10/7. I believe you have until noon that day to enter. Then they start emailing winners. If you win you have one hour to purchase your tickets or they are released to someone else.

Weds and Thurs/Fri tickets are lower priced than the weekend tickets, and they usually have better availability, especially Wednesday, since it's a weekday and includes a matinee performance. So Wednesday will probably be your best shot if you want to try to buy tickets in advance. And I would definitely try to see it on Broadway, because if it ever tours there are some things that they just will NOT be able to do at a tour venue. They had to completely renovate this theatre to accommodate this show, and a tour is going to lack some of the built in effects.

Also, finally, if you go and sit in far away seats, I used binoculars. Not for the whole show, but there are some very intimate scenes that are just two actors standing in the same spots and talking, and during those moments I used binoculars to see their facial expressions, and it really helped elevate the performances for me.

See it! You won't regret it!

so this is now the Harry Potter Cursed Child chat.

Well OK, I saw it in March/April and I'm seeing it again this Sunday. If you are a Harry Potter fan it's definitely worth it, but its also worth it to see a show anyway since you are in NY and NY is a destination spot in and of itself

there is no topic in "random chat' LOL

yeah it is pricey but they've charged before- wasn't it mark hammel last year?

Haha, well mllNY pointed out that it had turned into the Harry Potter chat, so I thought I'd drive it back to be more NYCC-related!
Yes, there was a separate Mark Hamill panel last year, but with much more reasonable prices starting at $14 instead of $102! As a friend of mine pointed out, at that price it should include ALL of the Doctors, haha.

I don't like the idea of these paid panels.  I get why they do it but I for one am not going to attend them.  There is enough for me to do at NYCC that I don't need to.

I've never done a paid panel and I won't start now

[member=2339]NCDS[/member] was there a panel that you did buy tickets for. IIRC you did for something one year or at least you were considering it.

We did the cheap seats for Mark last year and he was repeating everything I heard for free at his panel at SWCO.

Lesson learned, don't do it!

Speaking of panels, the panel schedule goes live on Wednesday, Sept. 5th. based on the NYCC newsletter.

I guess you could say NYCC is my "home con" as well.  I live in the opposite direction  (Rockland County).  I'm going Fri and Sat.  Those are the only days I wanted.  NYCC is fun, but it's not as exciting as SDCC (IMO).  That's saying a lot, as I am such a cheapskate.   :)  I actually look upon it as a holdover con for me.  It helps get me thru until SDCC.   :) :) I could drive in, but I usually take a metro north train from Westchester County.  It costs about the same as driving, but it's more relaxing, because driving into NYC is such a pain.

We still haven't received our Saturday badges, which we bought in the General sale.

Also, looks like there are much cheaper ticket options now for the Doctor Who panel, starting at $22.

Hola Eveyone, its been a while since last time so thanks for always keeping us up to date with news and interesting stuff.  I'll be there this year.. Last year I just missed exclusives and panels because i did not know about the lottery...bummer.  I live in Brooklyn, so not bad taking the F train to the 7 at 42nd Street. This time of the year probably the most exciting as since comic con is near and thanksgiving and Christmas for sure :)
Quick question, does anybody know when the sign in lottery starts? and also do i need my tickets to do so? i ask because i am still waiting on them. Thank you

The lottery opens on Thursday, but they haven't announced what time yet. Keep an eye on their social media.

You do not need your badge, just the email that you purchased your badge with.

Also, hello, fellow Brooklynite.

Amazing! I use to live in the Sunset Park area too (near to the Chinatown) and it was cool the time i was there. Now little bit near to the Prospect P and 7 so the F is the only way to get to work , i find it better then the R.
Are you guys going to the defender this thursday? i am out of town bummer.

Unfortunately I live further down...like way further down. I'm off Avenue P. While I dread the commute to my office in midtown each weekday morning, I refuse to give up my spacious 3 bedroom apartment on Ocean Parkway - mostly because it's cheap and I like the neighborhood. Lovely trees and benches outside. :-)

I am going each day this year, but I really have to watch how much I spend because there's a Con in Rhode Island later this year that I'm more excited about (mostly because some of my favorite actors are going to be there). I'm into pins, photography, and Artist Alley. I've been going to NYCC for almost 7 years now. At the beginning I was interested in shopping for toys and stuff, but the last 3-4 years I'm more interested in buying artwork to hang on my walls. I also like walking around taking in everything. Soo much crammed in such a small space.

What about you? What are you excited to see this year?

Cool!!! i like toys, funkos Lego and so on but if i see a very cool paint or drawing i would get it. So far this is the only con i been to. I like photography too, i have a old Canon which i use to play with and take some pictures around, this year i would like to do videos and possible upload them for my friends back home so they can see it on YouTube or anybody who likes this stuff but who knows.

I love Legos. Have you been to the Lego store on 23rd Street yet? I'm not a Funko collector, but I do have a Funko Egon from Ghostbusters. I have the Ecto-1 in Lego too. As you can tell by now, I'm a Ghostbusters fan. :-) I have an old Canon too; and it's a beginner camera too. I probably should upgrade my equipment. It's a Canon Rebel T3i. I keep buying new lenses for my needs. It gets the job done. I usually post my photos online via imgur. I keep telling myself I need to learn to edit the videos I take so I can put them on YouTube. Right now, they're all stored on my hard drives. Hahaha.

OK, here's a random question:  Does NYCC offer drinking water in the panel rooms like SDCC does?  This is my first time going to NYCC.  Thanks!

I’d seen it at a few of the Javits panel room, but not every room has it.

So the lottery allows you to enter for autographs, but I can't find a list of the free autograph sessions on the website, just the paid ones. Or is the lottery for the paid ones?

I believe it's in MSG which doesn't have lotteries.  I've never had problems getting into MSG.

Paid autographs are paid autographs. You won't know what signings are available in the lottery until the lottery goes live.

That said, apparently every Amazon Prime show is doing a signing, and those will most likely be lottery.

Thanks! I was hoping I'd be able to view a schedule ahead of time - no sense in putting in for a signing that conflicts with a panel, for instance. But I guess I can wait one more day

Just remember, you have plenty of time to submit your choices! The lottery is open for like two weeks, and it honestly is completely random, so it doesn't matter when you submit.

EDIT:

SYFY is bringing back the fan lounge on the mezzanine!

Anyone know the lottery link? I did a Google Search, but couldn't find it, though I did find the FAQ, that didn't provide a link.

I wonder if SYFY is bringing back those bags. I wasn't able to get one last year. In fact, how did one go about getting one of those bags? Thanks!

I don't think the lottery is up yet. There's been nothing on Twitter so far.

I think the SYFY bags were given out randomly throughout the convention. They may have them at the lounge, but I think I remember seeing people handing them out in the queue hall in the morning as well.

Also press, am only seeing panels. Nuts.

Interesting in that they did away with the groups, and you are only allowed to pick 5 total between panels and signings.

Also, you are supposed to select in "priority order", and it says you can't change the order to go to the next step, so I'm honestly afraid that if I go through to see what all is available, I won't be able to enter.

What do we think are the odds that a friend can put us as a +1 if they win?

I entered my Friday lotteries and then went back to the main page of lotteries, and it allowed me to re-enter everything and submit. Doesn't seem as strict as the writing implies.

Edit: after you've entered all four days' info, they ask you to confirm it all. I assume you can't change anything after that.

So, it's asking me to enter up to 3 friends. The only friends I have going to NYCC are here.  ;D :-X :'( LOL - Does this mean you get a higher chance at being picked if I piggy back or if someone else piggy backs as 1 of the 3 friends?

I figured it increased your chances because if you wanted to see the Constantine movie, but didn't get chosen and a friend who put your email down as one of their 3 friends and they got chosen, you'd still get to attend.

Title: Re: NYCC Random chat
Post by: Transmute Jun on September 14, 2018, 09:12:17 AM
It occurred to me that part of the reason for asking for guest names is to avoid 'double winners'. For example, I want to take person A with me to a panel. So I enter and Person A enters, each asking for 1 guest. But what if we both win? Then there are 2 wasted spots, because we're only able to use 2. And we might 'scalp' our extra guest spots.

But in the new system, I enter and put Person A's name, and Person A enters and puts my name. If I win, then Person A is probably disqualified from winning, because their name is already listed as a 'winner' for being my guest, and vice versa.

So this new system, while annoying, should theoretically make it easier for people to win (at least a little easier) and hopefully prevent some of the 'after-market' ticket exchanges that likely go on.
Title: Re: NYCC Random chat
Post by: Ultron32 on September 14, 2018, 10:13:13 AM
The whole system has gotten weird, now that most of the most desirable panels are at other venues. There are some panels at the Hammerstein or MSG that  will probably fill up faster than most of the main stage panels would, even if they didn't require early badge scanning. (I'd rather scan badge/enter lotteries for those locations than main stage, since that would eliminate the chance of walking over there only for it to be full)
Title: Re: NYCC Random chat

I don't know how MSG will be for Marvel but I never had problems for walking dead.  I don't imagine Star Trek Discovery will be a problem

I never had problems with Hammerstein but then again the panels I chose may not be as crazy,.

In general, NYCC is nowhere near the craziness of SDCC when it comes to lines. I think I've only ever not gotten into one panel that I wanted, and that was because I lined up super late, as I was running from a press room.

Anyone know what the protocol is for showing up late to lottery signings? If I showed up 20 minutes before it was slated to end, will they let me on line?
Asking to know which signings to enter for, because there are some that I would like but crossover with panels.

The panels are all available to people who don't win the lotteries too. They do this for signings now because in the past the crowds for free signings have become dangerously large.

You are very lucky. About an hour before start should be ok, but in the small rooms/popular topic spots, people camp out. I’ve been shut out of panels before. I hate when they underestimate the popularity of something.

I'm not lucky. I line up early for stuff that I want. It's when I can't line up early that I don't get in.

But I agree that NYCC is terrible about estimating the popularity of something. There have been Main Stage panels that are half empty but panels in smaller rooms have huge lines.

So I'm a huge theatre nerd. In my life I've spent maybe 62 total hours in NYC and I've still managed to see 5 Broadway shows (6 if you count Harry Potter as 2 since it's in 2 parts). I'm only going to NYCC Fri/Sat, we are arriving Friday early AM and leaving Saturday evening, but I couldn't go to New York and not see a show. So I just bought a ticket to see the very first preview of King Kong the Musical on Friday October 5. I'll miss the Netflix panel which is a bit of a bummer, but I'm excited to see a first preview. Not only will I be in the very first official audience to see the show (other than invited dress rehearsal attendees), but I might be seeing a version hardly anyone gets to see at all, since previews are when creative teams make changes/cut songs/change dialogue/eliminate storylines/etc). Hopefully I'll be seeing it on the heels of the Boy Meets World panel, which would make for a perfect day!

Today’s the last day to submit to the pre-show lotteries! It closes at 5pm today.

What I found weird about the lotteries this year is that you had to put all the emails in by day instead of by panel. So if you entered for two panels for a day, but your friend only wanted to go to one of them, he or she was entered anyway for both. It might lead to some more no shows than last year.

honestly RP should have no say in who a paid attendee adds to their badge as their +1; they paid. I have no idea why RP has become so anti-press this year but really it's a bit grating.

Agreed. I asked them why and they never responded, probably because they don't have a reason that makes any kind of sense. It's not like it gives us a leg up - it gives us the same chance as any paid attendee.

Also, for fellow press badge holders, I'm not sure what your experience was like last year, but I had issues getting through the press entrance. They weren't letting me in through the blue entrance until 9am - actually one woman told me I wasn't allowed in until 10am. I usually don't show up until 9am anyway so it wasn't an issue before, but I was there early to try and line up for a Main Stage panel.

It's YMMV; I've seen it both ways last year but I also think it depends what time you get there. Pray for rain cause then they will let you inside.

It just seems like they say here is a press badge cover the show, but don't acknowledge that they have given you the badge to cover the show. Not all press are paid or are from huge outlets so we don't always just get approved to cover content. To cover the show right they should let us in the building.

Join the club. I have no emails and nothing in my Showclix account.

Does anyone know if the standalone lottery results were sent out? They were supposed to be done today, but I haven't heard of anyone who got them.

If we got anything, would they also show up in our Showclix account?  I have nothing there, except the NYCC badges I earlier bought.

Question: My lotto emails say:

You’ve been chosen as a lucky winner of the NYCC 2018 Lottery! Note: if you did not select the panel listed below that means one of your friends stated that they wanted to bring you with them if they were chosen as a winner. Thank your friend for being so kind to you!

This would imply that emails are going out to the winners AND the friends that they added when they entered the lotto. But my friends did not get emails. Has anyone got an email for a panel that their friend won?

Edit: Um, also...am I missing something or is there literally nothing in My Show? I log in, I just get "Manage Your Show Profile," and then a string of letters and numbers, then a second line that is the same exact string (So I don't think it's badge numbers, since those would be different, not identical).  And if I click on it, I get "Company Name: same letters/numbers," "About: numbers", and then, "Representing: same letters/numbers" And there is NOTHING about the panels I won or anything

Edit 2: Okay, My Show and Showclix are different (duh, me). I don't see anything under Showclix about my panels, though, either

The panel we were most looking forward to was Boy Meets World, but we unfortunately did not win the lottery for it :(
So that basically means we have to get there early to line up and reserve a spot for it. We've never done that before, so not sure how it works.
Last year was our first year, and we only went on Thursday. We got there about 30-45 min before the convention was scheduled to open. But they weren't letting us into the convention center yet. We were directed into a tunnel-like area and had to wait in a big crowd for the doors to open.

So my question is, how early do you need to get there to be able be let into the area to tap in to reserve your slot for a panel?

Last year my friends got there at 8:45am for Voltron (I was there earlier) and we all got in. This was on Saturday. I don't think any of the lines had been capped at that point.

They start letting people into the convention center around 7-7:30am. They stop letting people inside when the line for the queue hall is full, which usually happens between 9-9:30am. So I would try and get there no later than 9am.

What time would you recommend to arrive at Javits in order to get into the queue line for the panels?  What time do the doors open?

If i am not mistaking doors open at 9 am or 9:30. However keep in mind that there will be lines for pre-lines inside the Jarvis so the early the better.

The convention center opens at 7am, which is when they start funneling people into the queue hall. They stop letting people into the building when the line for the show floor (in the queue hall) is full, which is around 9-9:30am. The show floor opens at 10am, which is when they start letting people from the queue hall up. They don't start letting people into the building again until that line has been cleared. Sometimes this takes a while.

If you're trying to go to a Main Stage panel, get there early, to make sure you are able to get into the building to line up. If you are going for any other Javits panels, you can show up later and try and avoid the line altogether.

Oh, it will be! It always is. I live off the D and judging by the train situation on the overnights this week, I'm fully expecting that my train won't even be running between Brooklyn and Manhattan this weekend.

This is probably a really stupid question (sorry!) but for any Funko booth veterans - will they ONLY have the exclusives at the booth or will there be other regular pops for sale.  (First year getting the chance to even go so... just want to be prepared)  Thanks in advance!

Only the exclusives.  That said, practically 50% of other vendor booth will have PoPs for sale.

Shop around if you want non-exclusive Pops. A lot of booths will have them, but some booths seriously overcharge for them.

I can't really remember, but I think I selected more on Thurs/Fri/Sunday. I don't remember seeing much I was interested in on Saturday. I definitely wanted to see the Constantine movie, Lego Batman/Villains, Cowboy Bebop, Batman: The Complete Animated Series Deluxe Limited Edition, DC All Stars, Netflix and Chills, The Gifted, Riverdale, and I threw in a few autograph selections, I think James Wan?. I can't believe I didn't even get a Funko win (which is something I selected for each 4 days) I'm not really that bummed. I'm more upset that there aren't enough chairs out for tired con-goers like me. Every year, my ankles and feet curse me. LOL

The odd thing about NYCC is that I never got anywhere near the convention center yesterday.  I got off the train, went to Hammerstein for some panels and then went to MSG for some panels.  Then, I had dinner at Tracks Bar and Grill in the station and went home on the train.

Even though I have a 4-day industry badge, work got really busy and I couldn't get out on Thursday and Friday.  I saw one late panel on Friday at Javits.  The scalpers weren't out at 7PM. The flow of foot traffic was leaving while I was arriving.

Maybe today is the day I see Javits in the daytime.  NYCC is such a different experience for me than SDCC.

Same here. I did spend the early evening at Javits on Friday but that’s because I won a lottery for a late panel. But I’ve hardly spent time on the show floor at all. I also only bought two days this year and I still feel like I did everything I wanted to do this year.

I agree. I spent ThursdY at Hammerstein and Shop Studios. I spent most of Saturday and today at MSG. I did one main stage panel at Javits on Saturday, and spent Friday morning on the Exhibit Floor, but spent Friday afternoon at offsites. Such a small percentage of time actually in the convention center over 4 days...

I didn't pay attention to the scalpers, but I did pass someone selling the free lanyards to a first timer with two young people.  I got to her before she handed over any money.  He was selling them for $5 each.  He was not happy I prevented that sale.  There's no telling how many unsuspecting attendees he fleeced.

As for me...

I spent the bulk of my time on the show floor on Friday.  That was enough for me.  I went back Saturday to the Audible Books exposition for Harry Potter.  That's all I wanted to do.  I was out of there after that.  There weren't any panels I was interested in.

Nycc felt very tame this year all around. No great exclusives, free or paid. None of the panels I went to had any surprises, which are the most memorable things here.

It's nice that you can fit a ton of people in MSG, but it just feels so much less intimate than the main stage. Always feels like watching people instead of being in a room with them. I like the Shop Studios a lot for the opposite being true.

Does any one else dislike the offsite venues for panels? Lots of reasons i dislike them. MSG and the Hammerstein are too far from the Javitz center. It makes it much more time consuming and difficult to go from a panel at say MSG and then go to the Javitz. Today i went to the Doctor who panel at MSG. It was over at 3:30pm. I wanted to go and walk the show floor one more time, maybe get some last minute deals on some stuff i had seen but by the time i got out of the garden and then the time it would have taken to walk over to Javitz it just didn't pay to do it with the show closing at 5pm. This happens every year sometimes on multiple days. If everything was in one venue i would have had plenty of time to walk the floor.
And don't get me started on the food situation at MSG and the Hammerstein. No outside food allowed in and  all they have at MSG is Hot dogs. I was at MSG all day on Saturday and it was really annoying only being able to get hot dogs all day. MSG rules just don't work for conventions.

Honestly, I rather like going to panels away from the chaos of the convention center. I do agree about the lack of food options at MSG though. I’ve been to several other conventions where outside food or drink was prohibited (SWCO, D23, RICC), but they at least have food options inside.

I agree with a lot of what you say, but I'm spoiled by San Diego Comic Con.  That fills my cup, so I'm not all that interested in the panels at NY.  I mostly do the show floor.

The problem is, Reed Pop seems determined to be as big as possible, Javits is under construction, and there is nothing within a block of Javits. Not to mention, it’s October and NY always gets the remnants of whatever hurricane or tropical storm is hitting.

This one pretty much says it for me.  SDCC is my Mecca, so NYCC pretty much turns into the Exhibt Hall for a day, maybe 2 if I'm feeling it.  But no panel draws at Javits this year like I had to go.  Now I did catch Alex Ross at the Studio, but technically I didn't need a badge for that, I coulda just stuck with buying a ticket for him and that would've been it.

Already planning my Saturday of Returning Registration for SDCC2019 now...

No outside food allowed in and  all they have at MSG is Hot dogs. I was at MSG all day on Saturday and it was really annoying only being able to get hot dogs all day. MSG rules just don't work for conventions.

Wait a minute, you're not allowed to bring in outside food to MSG?? I was at the Riverdale panel Sunday morning and I walked in with a brown bag with a coffee, sausage egg & cheese on a roll, and an orange juice. No one stopped me. Next time, just hide food in a tote bag or backpack. I ate in my seat and none of the security guard bothered me.

I really don't like the MSG/Hammerstein ballroom stuff because it's too far of a walk. (Yes yes, I should be flogged for saying that because I'm a New Yorker...but dang it, I don't want to waste 15 minutes getting to and from places...time is valuable during Cons). The food situation sucks because the Javits in away from any business district. It's underdeveloped right now. I'd give it a few years when the new buildings have people moved in and then we'll see a whole lot more food stores opening up. The main reason I did Riverdale was because it was first thing in the morning and I knew I was going to be able to get good seats.

I did see/hear a scalper Thursday, but I didn't hear anymore after that. I was stopped by a kid Friday night asking for my badge if I wasn't going back inside. He said it was for a school project and that he was collecting them. I'm much more wary of giving my badge away to other people these days because they are tied to my account, so I told the kid no. I felt bad, but I can't help but be skeptical. What it he got caught doing something and they scanned his badge only to find my name, then I'd be in trouble yada yada yada. For all I knew, he would have tried to sell them to other people.

Did anyone else feel like Saturday was dead inside the Javits Center? Usually Saturdays are elbow to elbow, but this year wasn't the case. Sunday felt really bad though. A lot more people attended Thursday than Friday I thought.

I got started collecting enamel pins from SDCC last year so I was really happy to have seen the pin craze come to NYCC. I'm also happy that buttons are starting to look better this year. A lot more of them have a rubber coating on them instead of that shiny plastic cover. Better textures. :-D

Most of the panels I wanted to see this year were part of the lottery, and since I didn't win anything, I just wandered on the show floor or around the food truck area with all the cosplayers. I really liked the experiences and activations this year. The lines were relatively short and by far the Outlander swag was the best. I was able to get extra tote bags there, but missed out on Number 6 essential oil. The personalized engraving for the leather luggage tags was awesome.

I forgot to add that the one thing that grinds my gears at NYCC is the connectivity. I have T-Mobile and my data sucked. And there was no site-wide Wi-Fi. Receiving and making phone calls no problem. Uploading to Instagram, checking Twitter, emails was a no go.

I noticed that most of the main stage panels on Saturday did not get closed out in the morning, only Hellboy. Meanwhile MSG was pretty full most of the day.  So maybe that’s why Javits felt a bit more dead?

Also, I wanted to scream walking the floor on Thursday. I have never seen so many people just stop right in the middle of an aisle to look at their phone.

There was free wi-fi at Javits that seemed to be available everywhere at Javits, it was the NYCC_wreckitralph one. But it disconnected a lot and you had to keep reconnecting.

Same problem for me with AT&T. It seemed to only be an issue on the floor and in the Main Stage room for me. The other downstairs panel rooms were fine for me. It was super annoying to not be able to check my twitter feed since that's the best way to find out what's happening at the Con.

Anyone else besides me getting a bunch of emails from Reep Pop asking me to plan my con weekend by logging into the My Show account? I’ve had 6 sent to me this morning. For one thing, I used it already, and for another, the con is over! :)

I haven't gotten any of those emails, but I found them to be inconsistent with emails. Earlier, about 2 days before the Con started, I received an email telling me I didn't win anything for the Lottery. But in their FAQ, I wasn't supposed to be notified if I lost. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

You got lucky getting food in. Also shows how the security they make you go though to get in is pretty much just security theater and a waste of time. I have had had them make me throw out food as i went in though so it really i guess depends on how lucky you are. My friend did get in a big bottle of water they she forgot was in her bag and even with the bag going through the security screening they didn't catch it. They are supposed to be checking bags so hiding food in a backpack is hit or miss and i would hate to spend money on bringing my own food and then have them find it and have to either not go in or throw it out.

I left early Saturday (around noon) and as I was walking to my train, someone asked if they could have my badge.  They would have paid me for it (I assume), but I said 'no'.  I didn't even think of all the concerns you had, but after reading them, now I am glad I said 'no'.

Considering every time I needed to use the restroom on Saturday, every single one of them had 20+ people in line, I disagree with this assessment. It may not have been as crowded as usual, but I would not call it dead. A friend of mine had been at the Live Stage for the Good Omens panel, and trying to get there was insane. It made me claustrophobic.

I guess I was just lucky to keep finding bathrooms with short lines. But on a serious note, I didn't feel claustrophobic until Sunday, comparing it to previous years, it was always Saturday that felt really crowded. I asked one of my favorite company's who had a booth how they were doing, since it was their 3rd year in a row at NYCC. They actually said Thurs-Sat was kind of disappointing and were hoping that Sunday would be better. They also mentioned it was the same way at SDCC this year. They didn't get the onslaught of customers until the last day.

Yeah, what is with the restrooms at Javits? I almost never have to wait for a women's room at SDCC (and if I do, it's not long, even in Hall H) but at Javits it was always a 20+ minute proposition to use the bathroom.

I see both good and bad at using Hammerstein and MSG. I liken it to having Hall H and B20 at SDCC a 15 minute walk away from the convention center. This big plus is that the distance keeps people away from other places and spreads them out. Yes, it make it difficult for people at these places to go back to the convention center, but it also keeps people out of those panels, which in turn makes them easier to get into. As a panel person, panel access is my first priority. I was at MSG and Hammerstein multiple times this con and never saw a completely full room. Both places were walk-ins when I was there, and I was at both places for some pretty big panels. Another huge plus is that these venues are built for people to actually SEE the stage. The graduated seating beats the pants off of the 'flat hall' seating at SDCC, where often you are just looking at a row of heads, and goodness forbid you sit behind a tall person!

The big negative is that you are disconnected from the con experience. The walk between the locations is along city streets where 90%+ of people don't know or care anything about the con. It takes you out of the 'con bubble' that I so love at SDCC. I was literally walking past homeless people glaring at me as I went by in my cosplay, the streets smelling of cigarette smoke and urine. You just don't get that during SDCC. I would enjoy the walk if it were through more of a 'Gaslamp' type area, meaning that it had con activations and a con atmosphere. I understand that's never going to happen at NYCC, but IMHO that's what's always going to make it second to SDCC.

The food thing is annoying, but I was able to get some food in by being subtle about it. Also, Hammerstein changed their policy on Thursday morning and decided to allow beverages.

What about Hammerstein's policies on markers and umbrellas?  After I got my last autograph on Saturday afternoon, I considered going to Hammerstein for the Family Guy panel, then realized I had too many things in my backpack that had traditionally been on their prohibited list.

I'm not sure what you could do about umbrellas, but I saw lots of people just putting markers into their pockets. They're not metal, so they didn't set off the metal detectors. I think markers are just one of those 'don't ask, don't tell' things.. .

I think the issue with bathrooms at Javits is that you have no choice BUT to use their bathrooms.  In San Diego, there are the nearby hotels, your room (if you have a close downtown hotel), and the restaurants if you're a patron.  Also, the construction at Javits is not helping.  It was the same way last year, and it doesn't look like it's going to be alleviated until 2020.

Hey! I live in this cigarette and urine smelling city!! Every day I take the subway 75 minutes into Manhattan to go to work. I see and smell things far worse than cigarettes and urine on a daily basis --so cigarette and urine don't bother me anymore. I actually saw more homeless people in the Gaslamp district than I do in NYC, but I think it's because the homeless population in NYC is spread out over a larger area. I think the problem is that NYC is far larger than San Diego (after all, there are like 8-10  million people living and working in NYC, as opposed to San Diego's 1.5 million). My experience last year in SDCC is that it's a whole city celebration kind of thing. In NYC, it's only a fraction of everything that is going on in the city. I love NYC and will defend it to the death even though sometimes I do hate its inhabitants. I also think it's only disappointing to people who are only visiting NYC for Comic Con and nothing else, because this city offers more than San Diego can offer (opera, Broadway, music, art, museums, history, culture, etc). New York City has always been known to be gritty and hard edged --after all that's where the phrase, "If you can make it in New York City, you can make it anywhere."

San Diego & California may have a lot to offer in the way of culture, but NYC still beats it in that department by miles. You can't argue with that. As far as SDCC, it was only better in Hollywood related events. Artist Alley in SDCC is much smaller compared to NYCC, which is the reason why I choose NYCC over SDCC.

This I will agree on. NYCC panels suck and they suck badly and that's why I rarely attend them. I keep seeing repeats in certain topics like LGBT and Asian related panels. I'd attend more if there were topics that were interesting. ReedPop kept merging their NYC cons. I was perfectly happy to have a separate AnimeCon and this year's BookCon was such an utter disappointment, I think they might kill it and merge it with NYCC in a few years.

For me, SDCC as a whole is an experience.  I go to enjoy the beautiful weather, the mexican food, and the whole party atmosphere.  NYCC is more of a "thing I am doing this weekend"something like a kickball game or a trip to Hudson.  I remember last year, during the Mark Hamill event, they asked people where everyone was from.  Everyone was from NY.  It's really a local con.  Just a very big local con.  And the city certainly acts like it's just another weekend.  For example, this weekend, they closed the Hudson Yards stop for routine maintenance (there's always station closures and rerouting every weekend).  It also happens to be the most convenient subway station to Javits and had this even been a major event, it certainly would not have been closed.

The crowd atmosphere is also more muted at NYCC.  I think SDCC would have had a crazier reaction to the Spider Man or Daredevil footage

No, the MTA still would have closed the station because they don't care about anyone. I don't think I've ever heard of the MTA postponing their renovations because of an event...no matter how large. It's amazing how valuable something is until it's taken away. There are closures each weekend and it's really a craps game. They're going to shut down parts of the L train in 2019 to repair the tunnels damaged by Hurricane Sandy, just like what they did with the R train. The R train did not connect between Manhattan and Brooklyn. My station in Brooklyn was completely torn down and I had a choice of taking a Coney Island bound train to the nearest express stop and transfer for a Manhattan bound train (or I could walk) for almost a year and a half until it was rebuilt. The oldest train system in the world and the most run down at the same time with parts so old, no one makes them anymore and the MTA just keeps on repairing and repurposing old parts.

I actually asked the Hammerstein staff about that. They said that SOME events allow umbrellas, but NYCC does not. The bags were there for those other events.

But for me, those umbrella bags made a great cover for my She-Ra sword, since it was raining when I left. ;)

And don't get me started on the food situation at MSG and the Hammerstein. No outside food allowed in and  all they have at MSG is Hot dogs. I was at MSG all day on Saturday and it was really annoying only being able to get hot dogs all day. MSG rules just don't work for conventions.

RP Event Director, Mike Armstrong, said in an interview with Leonard (An Englishman in SD) and Alyssa RP were/are trying to compromise with the outside venues in letting people bring food in etc. The con crowd is different than concert goers etc. (he mentioned something like that). I was glad Hammerstein let in beverages. Personally, the outside venues don't bother me since I don't mind the walk (as long as I have my iPod) and its good exercise. I mean it was bound to happen since people wanted it years ago because they got shut out of TWD.

I'd rather have the long walk and get to walk in to almost any panel, compared to the camping out at SDCC.
I'm not really a big panel guy but I do go to some when I can.
I went to the Netflix and Chills, Man in the High Castle, Hellboy, Outlander and one or two comic publishers panels.
I really enjoyed them and I need to remind myself to make sure not to just do the free signings etc and take time to see panels and offsites/activations.
And I'm probably the only one here but I like NYCC better than SDCC.

It is just the MTA's goal to piss off as many people as possible at any given time. TBH I talked to many people in my various lines and only one was from upstate NY.  I certainly found San diego locals attending SDCC

I think the panels were pretty good this year. I really enjoyed the ones that I went to (Drunk History, in particular, made me laugh until I cried). But as NYCC gets larger and attracts more high-profile guests, a lot of the smaller, fan-run panels have disappeared, or are being held in rooms that are much too large for them.

My issue with MSG and Hammerstein is not so much the walk, but the food situation. I always bring a stash of snacks to cons and on Friday and Saturday I couldn't do that, so I had to buy food, which I really can't afford to do, so I didn't buy a lot, so I was hungry.

Also, I wouldn't have so much problem walking back and forth between venues if you didn't have to go through security every freaking time.

Good point about security. I hate security theater and bag checks and metal detectors and the inconvenience when it doesn't really stop anything. I much prefer the approach of SDCC, which is to have vigilant security personnel, rather than bag checks.

The pricing for food at the center was a shocker. $3-5 for a bag of chips, $9 for a sandwich, $5 for a pretzel, and $11 for a salad.

Security staff were nice however additional time was needed if you needed to go to the other venues. The security lines were clogged up at times during the day.

On the other hand, they did have a bar and I bought a gin and tonic to drink while at the Star Trek panel.

All the ladies near me were drinking wine while they were waiting for the Outlander panel to start. :)

I had an absolute blast this year. This was my first time attending NYCC since 2013. I initially wasn't going to attend, but a friend had a hotel room spot open up at the Yotel, and since I always buy a badge just in case, I booked a flight on JetBlue from California and gave it a go. I attend comic conventions mostly for the cosplay since I participate and make videos. My friend who lives in New Jersey was one half of our cosplay tandem, Men in Black on Saturday. I was delighted to see that we were the only MiB cosplayers there. My friend was Agent K and I was Agent J with Frank the Pug on my shoulder, which people seemed to like more than the two of us. I was Morpheus from the Matrix on Sunday.

I struck out on the exclusives lottery, so I didn't worry about that or waste time trying to beg people to buy things for me. I did enough of that crap during SDCC. I also attend for the celebrity photo-ops and got to meet Michelle Rodriguez, Danielle Fishel and Trish Stratus. I was a bit disappointed that many of the guests weren't doing signings and photo-ops not involving winning that stupid lottery. I put my name is practically everything and only got Brian Michael Bendis and the Batman TAS signings.

Overall, I had a great time and am contemplating skipping SDCC and going next year. I regret not getting out to Coney Island and Central Park. Perhaps some year... I did get to hang out in Times Square and see the Lion King, which was amazing!

On Sunday as we were walking from Javits to Madison Square Garden, there was a dad and his son walking away. The son was probably around 8. The dad was on the phone and he was saying, "Yeah, we did end up going to Comic Con. We're done now. It was boring."

It was about noon at this point.

The convention center had opened at 10am.

Filled out the post-con survey. Made sure to complain about the complete lack of information they give press badge holders (like, you know, don't use the damn press entrance until 9am because they won't let you in), but also took the opportunity to tell them the site could use a redesign.

Their website blows. Their dissemination of information in general blows. It was my first and likely last time attending. I wasn't impressed in any way, and disappointed in many.

I'm curious what you didn't like about it.

The only reason I go to NYCC is because I live in the NY metro area.  If I couldn't get a badge, I would just shrug my shoulders.  However, the one year I didn't get a badge during Prereg for SDCC, I was a hot mess.  I got one during Open Reg, so it worked out.

if anybody asked me, I would tell them NOT to expect NYCC to be as much fun as San Diego.  It's a very different atmosphere.  For someone who lives fairly close, I'd say definitely check it out.  But if someone had to fly, and get a hotel, etc, and had been to SDCC, I would tell them to lower their expectations.

Interesting... This year, I found NYCC to be a better, more fun convention. I don't like the fact that EVERYTHING at SDCC has turned into a stupid lottery. If you luck up and win something, that handicaps your day as you have to be at a booth or spot at a certain time, and that's at least two hours of your con down the drain as you have to line up early. Last year, I had to miss the CW panels because I won the Lego lottery around the same time and was forced to choose. In years prior, I would line up in the morning for exclusives which kind of sucked, but I controlled my own destiny and I wasn't handcuffed in the middle of the day.

I also like how at NYCC (and ReedPop events), you can pay for autographs and photo-ops and aren't dependent on the luck of the draw. I've wasted too many hours at SDCC lining up for a ticket pull only to win nothing and have wasted time and frustration to show for it.

I'm this person. I've gone to SDCC numerous times and wanted to try out something different for a change so I flew all the way from SF to NYC to check out what NYCC/east coast con scene has to offer. Although SDCC is still superior for obvious reasons (i.e. programming, offsites, exhibit floor, etc.), there are some things I did like about NYCC.

Sort of jumping on what [member=5681]sessionka[/member] said, I think NYCC is more of a local con. A lot of people were surprised that I came all the way from California to visit NYCC and the majority of people that I spoke to were from the northeast. Would I fly back for another NYCC? Maybe not anytime soon. My main complaint about NYCC is that the con is mostly isolated to the convention center itself. Once you leave Javits, you're back in regular NYC whereas in SD, the whole entire city becomes the con.

I did have some cool experiences though for my first NYCC. I cosplayed as Arya Stark on Saturday and got absolutely bombarded for photos which was cool (I also made new friends in the process). I also did a cool video stint for VIZ Media and cosplayed as Tokoyami around NYC. I also won the Good Omens signing and met David Tennant and Jon Hamm (yes, he's even more attractive IRL) and even won a round of Game of Thrones trivia over at the Fandom booth.

  • I noticed that there are more cosplayers in NYCC than in SDCC. I feel like in SDCC most people run on a schedule so they don't feel obligated to cosplay whereas in NYCC, the sense of urgency isn't there as much so I think there's more time throughout the con to cosplay. That and the weather during NYCC was a bit more tolerable to cosplay than in SDCC. That being said, I cosplayed for 3 days at NYCC and had an absolute blast making new friends and networking with other cosplayers
  • Artists Alley is different. I frequent the California con circuit so for the most part I'm familiar with the artists who attend conventions however it was nice to see different artists at NYCC. I mean there are some that I recognized but a majority of the artists are those who I've never seen before.

This. Last year was my first time attending SDCC and for the most part, all I did was wait in line. I was hoping to see more cosplayers because it was bigger con. This was a disappointment because I love taking photos of cosplayers.

I was also disappointed with Artist Alley in SDCC. What I discovered from talking to some of the artists in AA is that a lot of the artist booths are scattered among the main floor with all the more commercial booths, so you really had to wander around the main floor to meet a majority of the other artists. This is one of the things I enjoy about NYCC, things are compartmentalized. (is that a real word or did I just make this up?)

I did sit in on some of the panels and I did the whole Hall H on Saturday. One of the panels I went to last year was a 1987 panel and I could only sit inside the room for 10 minutes before feeling like I was going to pass out from the heat...it was like there was no air conditioning or enough oxygen in the room. If I revisit SDCC, I definitely would skip Hall H. Once was enough and honestly, the only thing I enjoyed about it was the wall to wall screens (especially during the Ready Player One event). Definitely would want to experience more of the offsite stuff --that's the real winner at SDCC. I think what really is the biggest letdown for me is that I had the 4 day plus Wednesday evening badges, but wasn't able to see everything I wanted to see --like there was something I missed out on. With NYCC, I always came out satisfied that I saw everything.

What people really don't realize is that the Hudson Yards (where the Javits is) is currently in development and that is the real reason why there aren't many food places etc within short walking distance. Once people start moving in to those "in progress" buildings, more restaurants, bars, convenience stores will open within short walking distances. I mean after all, the stupid 7 train didn't exist until about 2 years ago and the majority of con goers either took the 34th Street bus or hoofed it to the Javits from 8th Avenue to 11th Avenue (Avenues are about 3 city street blocks in length in Manhattan).

So...I'm guessing that they count the same person more than once?  If a person has a badge, but then purchases for an offsite (say like the Alex Ross signing/panel at the Studio that didn't require a badge, but did require a ticket to be purchased) they're counted twice?  That makes that figure kinda...inflated...no?

Yep. They count badges sold, not actual number of attendees. If one person buys a badge for all four days, that's not one person, that's four badges. Now they've added the stuff at the Studio, which like you said, sometimes didn't even require a badge.

Wow..watched the video of The Shed.  With all of its planned uses and moving parts. It kind of reminds me of the Sails Pavilion, set forward about 10 years.  With all those moving parts, I can see something jamming...a lot. And the setting seems right for a movie murder mystery...hooks, pulleys from sky high, openings to fall through, staircases to hide..pieces on giant rolling tracks... ok? ::)

I used to try to go all 4 days but next year, I think I may just go on Saturday.  I had a badge for Sunday but ended up skipping because I bought all the merch I wanted on Saturday and there weren't any panels I was absolutely dying to see on Sunday.  There were no killer offsites like the one year they had West World, and outside of Funko, not much in terms of high demand merch (Ok, I did spend 2 hours in line for Joe Manganiello's Dark Crystal shirts).
Plus Eats Con was also happening in my neighborhood and I had to try that exclusive Shake Shack burger.

But maybe I'll do Friday/Saturday next year, especially if Netflix has something as great as their "Netflix and Chills" panel last year where they had a block of Haunting of Hill House, Umbrella Academy, Dark Crystal, and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.  It did seem the interesting panels for me this year were on Thurs and Fri.

This year absolutely sucked. NYCC was better last year. I don't know what happened. Last year they had that great Outlander experience with the tote bags, Caswell-Massey perfume, and the embossed leather luggage tags. Good Omens had a good experience booth with the mini journals and The Good Place with the giant fork. I have been scaling back my badges over the years because I don't care for the majority of vendors. I also got most of what I wanted on Thursday (but totally missed out on the Jurassic Park poster print from Bottleneck Gallery  :( ). The vendors I do enjoy, I can count on my 2 hands. I much preferred hanging around Artist Alley, but over the years they haven't really inspired me much. NYCC panels have almost always sucked. I didn't go this Saturday because I just can't deal with the shoulder to shoulder crowds anymore. I had hoped there would be some off-site stuff utilizing The High Line since it's right there, but nope. There's some good cosplay at least. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I've definitely scaled back.  I only went on Thursday this year, because the only panel I really wanted to go to was StarTalk, and it's only been on Thursday in the past.  I always check out the exhibit floor, but because they have a lot of the same vendors as SDCC, and because I usually shoot my budget there, it's really not necessary for me to cover the whole floor.

NYCC Panels are a crap shoot, and they don't do a very good job letting you know the schedule (IMO).

Since I got to see the panel I wanted, I may skip NYCC next year.   ???

I do use NYCC to get some of the merch I can’t get at SDCC like the Marvel shirts or the Hallmark stuff. But yeah, I spend a lot less time on the floor. Artists Alley has gotten much worse and a lot apparently moved to AnimeFest.

Museum of the Moving Image (MoMI) and AMC Networks partner to present Living with The Walking Dead, a major exhibition devoted to the groundbreaking series The Walking Dead as it enters its final season. Opening on June 25, 2022, at the Museum in Astoria, Queens, the exhibition explores key aspects of the show’s origins, production, and impact. The exhibition will be accompanied by multiple screening series and other public events over a six-month span, closing on January 1, 2023.

“It’s wonderful to be once again partnering with AMC Networks, this time to present an exhibition devoted to the long-running original series The Walking Dead,” said Carl Goodman, MoMI Executive Director. “More than just a television show, it is a cultural phenomenon that is adored by legions of fans, who celebrate the innovative, engaging, and immersive world that its makers have built, and for its diverse cast of characters. The exhibition will bleed outward from our temporary exhibitions gallery and into our theaters, classrooms, and other public spaces.”

"Over 11 seasons and 177 episodes, The Walking Dead has built a vibrant and massive global fan following, becoming one of the most beloved franchises in television,” said Dan McDermott, President of Entertainment and AMC Studios for AMC Networks. "We’re delighted to work with MoMI on an exhibition and lineup of events to commemorate this beloved series’ historic run, the immensely talented creative team, cast, and crew who brought it to life, and give this incredible fanbase a new and exciting way to experience their favorite show.”

The exhibition Living with The Walking Dead, in the Museum’s third-floor changing exhibitions gallery, will probe the issues at the heart of the series: the related threats of the murderous undead and the collapse of the social order. It will explore the cinematic and literary antecedents of The Walking Dead, including its origin in Robert Kirkman’s comic book series, and present the unique innovations that the AMC Networks series has contributed, with its wide-ranging story of survival, diverse cast of characters, and devoted legion of fans. The exhibition will include original costumes and props, concept art, storyboards, scripts, and a wealth of prosthetic makeup material. Created by Special Effects Makeup Supervisor and Executive Producer Greg Nicotero and his team at the award-winning KNB EFX studios, the special effects makeup transformed legions of cast members into vividly realized undead walkers, largely using practical effects.

The Walking Dead premiered on Halloween night in 2010 as the #1 cable series launch of all time and is the most-watched series in cable history. It was the first cable series to become the #1 show in all of television, including broadcast, a rank it held for five consecutive years. The series has also given life to a vibrant and expanding content universe that currently includes Talking Dead, Fear the Walking Dead, The Walking Dead: World Beyond, two spinoffs planned for 2023, and the forthcoming episodic anthology series Tales of the Walking Dead.

AMC Networks continues to develop new content rooted in the unique and entertaining world of The Walking Dead, one of the most powerful franchises in the history of television, which currently has more than 50 million social followers and fans across Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, a thriving presence in gaming, The Art of AMC’s The Walking Dead Universe coffee-table book, and a variety of other extensions through which this passionate fan community connects with stories and characters unlike anything else on television.

The Walking Dead is produced by AMC Studios and executive produced by Scott M. Gimple, Chief Content Officer of The Walking Dead Universe, Showrunner Angela Kang, Robert Kirkman, David Alpert, Gale Anne Hurd, Greg Nicotero, Denise Huth, and Tom Luse.

The Museum previously partnered with AMC Networks on the exhibitions Matthew Weiner’s Mad Men (2015) and From Mr. Chips to Scarface: Walter White’s Transformation in Breaking Bad (2013).

Is it me or is the show floor flipped this year? Normally the studios are in the 2000-3000 aisles, and this year they're all down in the 1000s.

Anyone get into the reservation portal yet?

Just got thrown in the queue. I tried the link on their website but it did not work which is sadly unsurprising. I then tried a link on their Facebook page and it finally popped me into the line.

I mean you think they would either make sure that the vendor they use can handle the bandwidth or they would find a new vendor so that we are not in the same spot as last year.

Also note that last year was a whole lot smaller and Funko was not in the reservation system and they STILL had issues.

I understand it is not easy but they shanked the link on their website. It is almost comical.

The server is shut down until later this week.
Message last updated: 2:33 PM
Today, we had tens of thousands of fans hit our reservation page simultaneously. We were under the impression the servers could handle the volume, but errors resulted in extremely long wait times and for that we apologize. Each time Thuzi saw an issue, the entire process was paused to ensure no one lost their place in line within the system. The fans who were let into the reservation site were the first folks in line and were able to get through the process, and we continued to pause and un-pause the system as server issues continued. We recognize this isn't up to our standards and know that this took valuable time out of your days. We appreciate your patience.

Reservations will re-open this week once all server errors have been fixed. We will post on social and our website when we have the new date they will go live.

Anyone else get the Todd McF signing for Saturday? Looking through the schedule I can't find any mention of it.  And the confirmation calls out the CGC booth, so I'm assuming I'm bringing books.  But things like "how many books can I bring?" and stuff are running through my head.  Anyone else find anything in the schedule referring to the Saturday signings?

So back in the lottery days I got a McFarlane signing. It was strictly limited to one item and there are definitely things he will not sign (I am assuming anything Angela related). I had him sign my Batman:Year Two hardcover.

He is pretty cool and very efficient at getting through a line quickly.

Ugh, Barnes and Noble, that makes me sad. Before last year, they were using the Strand, and because of labor issues, last year, they were using an independent book store from Connecticut, RJ Julia. I wish they would have stuck with an independent seller. When I talked to the RJ Julia people last year, they were thrilled to be there (I go to their bookstore sometimes).

Great writeup/article.  Interesting that they didn't allow for Q&A...that's one way to control what they address :)

Yeah, in the David Tennant panel people were shouting things from the audience, and he would just make a 'zip my lip' motion and add 'Come on SAG!'. The 'Come on SAG!' started out enthusiastic, but became very sarcastic by the end of the panel. It made sense to not put the actors on the spot, after they were already stretching regulations to attend at all.

The panels that allowed questions were ones where the panelists were free to talk about anything.

Hoping to go next year. How difficult is it to get badges compared to SDCC?

Not hard to get general badges if you are on the ball. Make sure that you sign up for the ReedPop mailing list and fan verification notices (like a CCI member ID).

It's somewhat difficult to get a VIP badge without an edge. The easiest edge is buying a superfan membership to get access to the presale.

Even with superfan, you’re not likely to get a VIP badge since people who purchased VIP the previous year get the first chance to buy again.  You’re best bet is to become very friendly with someone eligible for the VIP presale whose second VIP badge is unclaimed.

Just curious.  What does VIP get you that having all days doesn't.  I've never seen a problem with getting all days, as long as you buy early.

For me, VIP is about easier access. You can walk into any panel you want, don't have to line up for hours, don't need reservations, etc.

Walk into any panel and the VIP seating in the main and empire stages is the front center section.  First access to buy photo ops and autographs (like Chris evans who sold out in minutes).  First access to Funko reservations — basically any VIP who wanted one got one.  VIP lounge with free bag check and coat check to drop off the Funko bags and take a break.  First access to the show floor, that’s why some lines were already capped when doors opened.  And priority lanes for photos and autos, and those probably saved me hours of time.
