Good luck to everyone shooting for hotels tomorrow! I have a hotel republic that I'll be canceling, will post when that is up. (not sure when though, as I am stuck on vacation with COVID)

Oh, interesting--I hadn't noticed that there was a non-refundable fee for each reservation now.  That's new right?  I feel like before there was no penalty for canceling before the deadline.

Yea I think its somewhere around $29-35 for downtown hotels in the low $300/night range. Totally worth it (at least for me) to switch from a hotel that is downtown but not super close (20 min walk, 16 min shuttle, 14 min trolley ride) to a hotel that is in the Gaslamp and only an 8 minute walk from the convention center. Even more since our original hotel was on Shelter Island.

So frustrating, soul crushing, annoying that I was either driving, sleeping or just could not get to a keyboard in time to grab a Manchester Grand Hyatt room when there were more available, and now I see the hotel still has plenty of rooms, but only if one is willing to spend $1300-1400 per night.  That hotel never gets more than $315 the rest of the year, and if they are going to participate in the lottery, then they should go all in.  It's just so cruel.

EVERY hotel keeps high end rooms available if you have enough cash.  Those have been available at any time over the last year at that price they just wait for some one desperate enough or for whom money doesn't matter.

On the flip side, and this might not make you feel better, they take a risk holding out rooms from the lottery.  There's no guarantee they will get someone to rent rooms at that rate.  While the close hotels are pretty booked up right now, there is still plenty of inventory both 'downtown' and further out.

If I remember correctly from 2019, these are the same rooms that a couple days before the con, go up on onpeak for like $900 a night.
