The middle school years can be an uncertain time as tweens begin to leave childhood behind and take on greater responsibilities as they enter teenage-hood. In this panel  librarians and educators will discuss how recent comics like Frizzy and others can be used as a tool to help tweens discover the wider world and explore and formulate a more concrete sense of self-identity.

For years kids have stuck comic books in textbooks and avoided homework by going to the local comic store. Comic books and graphics novels were seen as at best recreational reading material. This however could not be farther from the truth! Emerging research shows that comics and graphic novels are motivating support struggling readers enrich the skills of accomplished readers and are highly effective at teaching all subject areas not just English. Join us as we explore just how crucial comics and graphic novels are to include in a class curriculum and collaborate on how we can include them in our curriculums!

Actual working pros show you how they determine the layout  the story flow  and specific panels from a real comic book script.   Why this panel? This panel gets everyone involved. We're not just talking about making comics. We're giving top  working comic book professionals pads and markers and having them show us how they make comics. Everyone is standing and moving constantly. It's full of energy and excitement for everyone. We typically have a writer  and editor  and three artists demonstrating the craft. It helps creators to learn by seeing the process. We also recommend that members of the audience participate  so they can compare their work to the work of the professionals.

Fortunately for us, these panelists had a front row seat: MTV VJ and bestselling author Karen "Duff" Duffy will recall her interviews with Beastie Boys, Ugly Kid Joe, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and more. Music video director Rich Murray will take us behind the scenes of shooting the Little Band that Could, aka the Spin Doctors, as well as grade-school hip hop sensation Kris Kross, both of which experienced multiplatinum success from their music video exposure.
