Title: Traveling Southwest to SDCC 2017?
Post by: catvonawesome on August 04, 2016, 08:13:39 PM
Got an email that Southwest reservations are open through April 2017 already! That's more than the usual 6 months ahead only. Not sure I'm ready to think about flights yet. Though I'm already stalking Delta's page too. They're open through July 1.

If anyone collects Coke points for My Coke Rewards, you can earn $20 Southwest codes.

ETA  I apologize, [member=1221]YouThinkMeMad[/member] . It looks like they aren't doing it right now. But I'll keep my eyes open and if they bring back that promotion, I'll post again here.

American Airlines are open up for all of July dates next year! Think I'll still wait for Southwest.

That's good to know. I'm waiting for Southwest as well. I flew American last time and didn't care for my flight time getting changed, delayed take off causing me to miss my connection and we arrived 2 hours later than I wanted.

Woot! Woke up around 5 this morning and booked my trip!

I'll be flying into LA on Thursday 7/13 for D23 (my first one), drive down to San Diego after, and then home on Monday 7/24.

Direct both ways. Total cost was around $350, but due to credit I had, $150-ish out of pocket!!

I just can't justify it when I don't know if I have passes. I would say I could use the credit, if I end up not going, towards my Dragon Con trip, but flying to Atlanta is much cheaper than flying to SD, so it wouldn't make sense.

What to do, what to do...

I had a similar dilemma but, in the end, I decided to purchase my flight today. Coming from CT, the prices always tend to be lowest the earlier I book, so I wanted to take advantage of that while I could. Plus, I will be attending Walker Stalker Con in Atlanta in October AND I have one other non-con flight planned for the fall so if there are any issues with securing a badge, I'll just use the credit for both of those  :)

So I wasn't planning on buying my flights out to SAN just yet, but I couldn't pass up a one way flight there for only $132. This is the cheapest I've seen it over the years coming all the way from FL... The return flight wasn't as enticing, so I'll be booking that later.

Was that first thing this morning? My flights from TX were considerably higher. I would have jumped at that price too!

Not price related, but for us, the return flight that fits our schedule best is again at 6:55am. Arrgghh!!

Nope. I booked it about an hour ago. My flight is in the early evening on 7/18 with one plane change in AUS, TX.

i just booked for about $450 from Portland ME that includes $30 for early bird boarding

i actually paid $230 with points & discounts

all i can say is, given the turbulent nature of life, I greatly appreciate the flexibility of SW.

Ha, my flight back (also to Texas) is at 6:35 a.m. But it's direct and it's cheap, so worth it.

Don't worry: even if you don't get badges, you will still have a good time!

And if the worst happens and you decide to cancel, you can use the credit from Southwest on another flight.

I didn't know you could do that! Add the free baggage on and there is no point in traveling on another airline. :)

that's how i feel- i've got a flight booked from lax to chi next month that i think i'm going to rebook -  I haven't figured out where to go yet tho LOL.

it is absolutely freeing to be able to change a flight without stupid fees- i don't care if it's more $ or not- i don't even bother looking at other airlines.  the piece of mind is worth it!

i did find out one thing tho abt the boarding Early Bird thing they do for an extra $15.

the earlier you buy, the lower your number is. so if i bought my flight the day they were released and i bought the advanced boarding pass, i'd most likely get a position of A25....ish.  If i waited to right before the flight i probably would get a position of A55- B10.

also, if you do buy EB and need to change your flight, it will travel with your ticket.  You need to be sure an modify your flight. I'm pretty sure if you turn a flight into money credit, the EB doesn't follow you.

Although you can only use the credit for a flight for YOU. I found out the hard way I couldn't use my credit to buy a ticket for my husband, even if I was making the purchase.  :-\  Also, the credit expires 1 year from the date of original purchase.

Even still so much better than other airlines. Change fees are ridiculous. Just saw this today:

A British man who needed to fix a typo on a plane ticket found it was cheaper to change his name & get a new passport than pay the airline's name change fee - so he did it.

Anyone had a love voucher before?  I would love to know how long they take.

Bummer indeed, but perhaps its just a temporary jump. Once I saw my trip moving upward, I decided to jump on before it climbed any higher. Then two days later it dropped again. Looks like prices haven't stabilized just yet.

i can not say if it will retain the same early position i had obtained by buying the EB when i bought the ticket or not-

i am due a refund of 2500 points. they have not appeared in my account yet but SW does indicate that i am owed that refund.

I adjusted flights with NYCC last year with this method a month before the convention [w/ early bird], and was A30-ish on boarding day.

using this method i was just able to save myself ~~ 3,000 FF points....  Thank you again [member=4102]rickythump[/member] !
for those of you not involved with the SW FF, that's about one fourth of a coast to coast ticket- if you are able to book cheap-ish.

I have been using that method for years.   My Orlando tickets went down $176 and I used that to pay for my SDCC fair.  I check my flights a few times a week.

I just booked a one way ticket to Tampa for $77. The price on the website was about $230. Apparently if you call Southwest there are still much cheaper seats than the ones posted on the site. So, just a heads up for those of us traveling to San Diego on Southwest.

I got 10 dollar credit for a price decrease on my flight so double check your flights if you already booked. Usually i get one year to use it but this time it says it xpires on July 25, 2017. Did southwest change their policy when the credit expires?

That would suck if you have to use it by the time you take the trip you initially booked.

Wow! I have never seen a ticket from Tampa that cheap. Although I can't complain, I just used my points for Tampa to SD and only paid $5!

We booked round trip for 2 from San Antonio for 46000 points OUCH!!  Last year it was 19000 points but it was booked Feb 21. Having the sale this late made a difference with the fares.
Title: Re: Traveling Southwest to SDCC 2017?

I booked round trip from STL yesterday and it was $544 after all the taxes/fees/earlybird, last year was closer to $450 (and if memory serves me right closer to $400)! Eeeeek!  Granted, I did check the fares around December/January and they were about the same as yesterday, but I still feel like having a late sale certainly doesn't help with the flight situation and can only hurt.

Edit to add: I did search outside Southwest but when factoring in points/free bags/layovers it was still the best option for me. I guess flight prices are just going to keep going up....

Well-my flights had held steady at the original rate (they popped up $40 for a bit, but went back down). Now, they are back up that $40. I know it's not much, but it's a bummer. I am going to go ahead and book, since I know I am going. I would hate for them to go up even more. Maybe I will try calling.

SJC has flights for $154 roundtrip ($77 one-way.) This is as cheap as I've seen it during July as usually they are minimum $100 each way. SFO and OAK are currently minimum $115 each way.

I've been watching the airfare and it did go up by about $70 so decided to wait. Then saw a good deal on American but I would have to pay for baggage, so it wouldn't actually be that much cheaper than SW. I checked again this morning and SW dropped by almost $100! Same dates and times, so I hurried and booked it. Check it today and see if your airfare has dropped.

You just made my day! I can confirm that our flight went down around $160ish! I can use the balance for our LA flight for Gallifrey One. And, as others have noted, I kept my early bird (and have no idea if my place in line was altered. Does anyone know how long it takes Southwest to refund back your money?
Instead of changing my flight due to a lower cost, I accidentally did a refund instead and purchased the tix all over again. Sadly I lost the $30 from the checkin and had to choose it again.
I'm sure because of Easter Sunday it delayed it but usually how long does it take? Within 24 hrs? 48 hrs? I did it last night so I'm guessing by Monday I'd get the money again?

It was a refundable ticket. It just took 3 days to put it back into my acct. I was getting worried that I'd be charged twice lol. Seems like these price aren't gonna go down any time soon. And idk if they'll even have a sale.... I'm hoping so but my hopes are slowly fading away haha.

It really depends on what day you are trying to fly out on. We also fly out of philly airport. Try looking for a Tuesday or Wednesday departure.

Yeah that is usually a cheaper day to fly out. This year we are leaving on Tuesday but flying directly to San Diego. Normally we fly to vegas (cheaper) and then fly the next morning to San Diego. Do you have a preference of Airlines you are looking at.

For SDCC usually southwest as we bring purchases back. Last year we flew American really cheap, but I also booked in Feb. The lateness of the sale is really hurting for flight prices.

Yea you can find cheap flights with certain airlines or at least you think. You will end up paying for bags, seats, and other things. I usually stick with southwest as well because you can check two bags. Last year I paid a little less than $200 one way by going into vegas first. Sometimes taking multiple planes makes it cheaper too... Depends if you like to fly a lot or just want a non stop lol.

So what is the overall advice here when it comes to a time to purchase your ticket?

I'm flying from DFW and I'm going to fly American. Should I buy now or wait? If wait, how much longer? The app, Hopper, has told me that pricing on the flight I have in mind will hold steady until June 1st then it will slowly rise.

Usually flights go up in price the longer you wait, but I would just keep checking.

One aside - I'm not sure if you have flown lately but last year both united and AA changed my flight times on me at least twice. For some reason they think its ok to move your flight times by hours to put you on another flight. While those carriers may be cheaper, thats why I went back to SW.

Typically no later than 2-3 weeks before departure date, while obsessively checking for deals

Well, supposedly airline prices bottom out at about 54 days before the flight date so you still have a few weeks before prices are supposed to be their lowest.  Of course that's just an average and doesn't take into account specifics of the flight itself or its popularity.

Dont wait... prices for SW will not likely go down at this point. Best deals for SDCC are usually like 4 months prior. They have continued to go up since i booked in March. Best deals i have zeen in the last 5 years were in Feburary.

one of the reasons i book Southwest is so i can get credits if the price go down. Dont wait...

The late badge sale really hurt us with our flights. Earlier in the year, we could have gotten $77 one way to SD, but because of the wait, the one flight I wanted skyrocketed up to $160, so I ended up booking a really early flight to save money. Last week, I checked for S&G's, and the flight I wanted went down to $115, so I made the change. Coming back, prices are still crazy because it's on a Sunday, so I doubt that changes any.

Southwest dropped their prices flying out of SAN to EWR on Monday 7/24 and Tuesday 7/25.

Monday dropped from $282 to $222.
Tuesday dropped from $222 to $202 on Friday and has now dropped further to $182 today so I'm now sitting on a $40.03 credit! :D
