Stranger Things Season 3: SPOILERS!
« on: July 04, 2019, 02:19:25 PM »
The new season for Stranger Things is totally rad!  It's a love letter to the 80s.  I just binge watched S3 and absolutely loved it.  There were so many homages to 80s movies especially Red Dawn.  The fight scene between Hopper and the Russian Schwarzenegger was a blatant nod to Die Hard that was practically shot for shot minus the stairwell.  Maximum Overdrive when Dustin returns home.  Caddyshack's pool scene.  The Blob.  Graduate.  And more.

Even though this season is heavy with 80s nostalgia it is still very pertinent.  The mayor, played by Cary Elwes, is a corrupt politician with connections to the Russians, an obvious allusion to our current president.  There is even a scene with his campaign reelection sign and the graphic design is an exact match to Trump's 2016 campaign.

Kinda bummed that

Like the other seasons I will no doubt watch this season several more time.  I want to go into more details but it's time to start the BBQ.  Happy 4th everyone!

Spoiler free review:

I just finished a binge viewing. Honest to God, this has been my favorite season of a TV show in a long, long time. Every episode, from one through eight, was rock solid. Every character, old and new, had multiple moments to shine. There weren’t as many surprises, story wise, but the story beats were executed flawlessly. And there were so, so many laugh out loud moments, including a certain neverending moment.

The best way I can put it: you know that massive disappointment you felt from Game of Thrones season 8? Well, Stranger Things season 3 was the exact opposite.

I just love Steve, and how his character has evolved.  Love his interactions with Robin.

Also, Maya Hawke, who plays Robin, is the daughter of Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke  :)

Oh wow!  I didn’t know that!  I really enjoyed her character and I am looking forward to what they are going to do with her next season.

Steve has definitely become one of my favorite characters. I’m going to do a season 2 Steve cosplay this year. Couldn’t get the Scoops Ahoy together in time.

I was just starting to like Billy then didn’t totally care for the whole arc but it was still well done.

Dusty Bun and Suzie Poo for the win!
Fun isn’t something one considers when preparing for Comic-Con, but attending does put a smile on my face

What a fun cosplay!  You'll need to post photos!

I have to start watching this show.  I have no excuse.  I have both the S1 and S2 boxsets.

I started reading / watching all the Stranger Things s3 recaps / reviews / easter eggs, and I had no idea people were disappointed with Season 2! I guess it helps to live in a bubble where you mostly avoid reviews. I enjoyed Season 2, but Season 3 is much, much better.

Same.  I don't get all the hate for Season 2.  It expanded on the ST's universe very well, IMO.

Same. It's easy to forget how much of a dickwad (and dingus) Steve was in S1. That's the brilliance of S2... they completely transformed his character.

Actually, Steve has great character growth in S1. He started out a stereotypical horny teen, but he acted when it counted at the end and came back to fight off the Demogorgon. IMHO, that was the first real test of his character, and he passed with flying colors.

Ah, that's true. He did have his redemption moment at the end of S1.

---

I've been thinking about Stranger Things s3 a lot. I think the one thing I love about the characters is that there's not much in terms of doubting / questioning / calling each other liars. Like, when Will says,
Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.
, there was only a brief "You sure?" and then all the kids were fully onboard, even putting on hold whatever squabbles they were going through to tackle the problem. Hopper doubted Joyce's paranoia, but those also get erased rather quickly by

, at which point, Hopper fully goes into f*-s**t-up mode.  Even the new s3 cast additions accept the idea of conspiracies and monsters, although in their case, maybe a touch too readily. But I rather that be the case over them spending the whole season disbelieving, only to be proven wrong at the last episode.

That being said, the one big exception to the above is

, and the payoff was utterly hilarious and worth it.

I will buy Starbucks for any member on the forum who will sing this and allow it to be filmed for posterity.
