Since we have a new season, I started a new thread! What did everyone think of the episode last night? A few of us here at FoCC were lucky enough to be able to attend the premiere event at the Greek Theatre in LA and it was fantastic! I am so pumped up for this season of TWD!

This is my analysis of episode 801.

I really like the Old Man Rick flashes. I'm also glad Father Gabriel is getting some more screen time. His character seems to be turning more likeable, I noticed the actors name got moved up in the credit list he is now featured in the title sequence.
-
He's definitely turned a big corner, and I appreciate how he's now supporting Team Rick, and even developing enough skill with weapons to do stuff like go out with Rick on a raid. And the way he pulled Rick back when Rick was going overboard was impressive.
-
Probably because he's done with his veterinarian duties in Beacon Hills! LOL-sorry, couldn't resist the Teen Wolf reference. I was happy to see him in the series finale (Teen Wolf). I was always thinking they would kill him off, since he had this other gig, but they never did.
I hope him turning the corner on TWD isn't an omen. Things tend to happen to people when that happens in TWD land.
I am not watching TWD anymore, but I did tune into the Talking Dead episode-everyone looked so great. I also like reading along here to see what's going on with the show.

Yes! They are making me like him, that is never a good sign on this show.

It was okay the show seemed to be trying to get away from all the violence, remember last season opener had people questioning the violence and did it go too far with the deaths of Glenn and Abraham. Well no major character died and the in memoriam segment tried too hard to be cute with the names IMO, still watching though because it’s The Walking Dead

Whoa, you think so?! I mean, the first two episodes so far have been virtually nothing but our "heroes" going from bunker to bunker with the goal of flat-out murdering everyone!
My personal take is Ep. 2 felt same ol/same ol as Ep. 1. "The Walking Dead" is flat out HORRIBLE with the visual vocabulary (meaning how they shoot scenes), and there is little/no sense of geography to their action sequences from shot-to-shot. There's no sense of a layout of the various compounds, either interiors or exteriors which drives me batty. This is not a new thing for the show the last several seasons, but it's something that apparently no one on the production staff (show runner, directors, DPs,etc) seem to care to address. It makes everything feel monotonous and very uninteresting to me. The episodes feel like they have zero actual weight to em (meaning, we can watch this and confidently know a main character is not going to die this early in the season): I lol'ed when Morgan told the personality-less 'red shirts' "I don't die." It's like he was mocking the conventions of episodic TV!
And don't get me wrong, I get the conventions of it all, and the logistics of not killing off main cast members early. But there is so much of what I'd term "lazy" production it's hard for me to really get into the show. For example, this past episode we have what looks to be a very well-prepared, coordinated and practiced, multi-faceted assault but there is so much stupidity from the participants. Standing up to shoot; firing constantly at zombies in automatic when semi would work and conserve bullets; very little concern of reloading bullets or where all of this ammo is coming from or mention of how much ammo they have. I'm in no way a gun expert, and have zero experience in trained combat. But the basics of "stay the eff down and conserve ammo" is shooting 101.
IDK. The show isn't bad, and there are entertaining moments. I just hate when episodes get lazy: especially with the production aspect of it (the lack of visual geography & vocab really drives me nuts about TWD)
-
@perc2100 Yes to everything you said, to me it all moving to fast almost like its catering to those that complain on social media how during last season it was boring because of telling of stories. Like Hardwick said on Talking Dead “there was some stormtrooper shooting” and all that ammo they’re using isn’t Eugene supposed to be doing that? Did he make an a lot of ammo or did he have an apprentice, he was taking by Negan a long time ago.

I missed this special when it aired, but the trailer here is great!

I just turned it off mid episode. I just can't watch it anymore. The storyline these last two seasons have been silly. It's just too preposterous. I just couldn't stand it anymore.
-
I wish I would have turned it off halfway through.

Collider just posted their last Walking Dead show review. They just can't do it anymore either.

Merry Christmas to all of those who watch The Walking Dead!

I can see it, if I picture his hesitant Love Actually character instead of Rick Grimes.
-
Am I the only one still watching? I find that hard to believe! lthough last night's episode wasn't as exciting, I thought it had some interesting character development, especially for Eugene and Dwight.
These are my thoughts on the episode.

Still watching... hoping we get some real resolution to the Saviors/Negan thing soon because it's dragged on for too long without any real movement... also found myself really hating Tara lately.
-
I'm still watching too, but I record it and watch later in the week when I have time. Hasn't been "stay up and watch it" worthy for quite some time now.
-

I believe that Scott M Gimple confirmed that the war with the Saviors would be resolved this season.
-
I think the biggest problem is with the pacing and how out of sync we've gotten with the "in world time" for the characters.

I agree that we’ve become stuck on a day... for the first half season and now for the second half season. I guess that’s what happens when you have so many characters and want to focus on all of them.
-
I'm still watching! I'm not as into it as I was in past seasons, but I'm still enjoying it. I'm looking forward to moving on with the story line as well.

I actually really enjoyed the character-focused episodes in the past seasons but this season it just feels really disorganized in the way that they've highlighted certain characters/stories and the "weaving that individual thread back into the whole" has not been as seamlessly done as in the past (hmm, looks like a part of me really wants to learn how to sew/weave/knit/crochet!).

FWIW the story arc in the comics was maybe a 2 year thing as well (when I went back and re-read it a few years ago I was surprised how many issues it played out).
Oddly, or maybe not surprisingly, the comics felt much tighter and more interesting than the show (probably because you can not mention a character for months and it doesn't matter, while the show has actors on payroll they have to feature). But, IMO Negan is MUCH more interesting in the show than he is in the comics.

That's probably part of it too. I keep comparing the show to the comics and I *liked* the Saviors arc in the comics.

I have stayed away from the comics but I did read a comic that this is chance the showrunners may jump ahead of the Whisperers since Carl was heavily involved. We will see but the casting is not a fly-by-night or cameo casting Pamela Milton is a heavy hitter and this may setup something bigger for next season.

Keep in mind that the suggestion that Georgie is actually Pamela Milton is only a theory right now. As far as I know, there has been no official confirmation of that.
I discuss that theory, as well as the rest of the episode, in my review here.

Based off of official pictures, it also seems possible the Whisperers will be in FEAR THE WALKING DEAD (either that, or some VERY sketchy zombie makeup, which has not been the case ever).

When I was watching the episode last night and they showed a super closeup of Dwight's face, it was easy to see the lines of his facial prosthetic.

Yeah, his prosthetic and makeup has ALWAYS been pretty sketchy IMO. I think generally, though, a featured zombie on TWC shows generally has pretty impeccable makeup: like, I often think they put the majority of their budget on zombie makeup sometimes at the expense of other stuff (like Dwight's pretty-bad makeup)

Tonight’s season finale was ok. I did like the twist and that possible civil war story for next season. The series needs something big, and friends fighting friends would help a lot. Let’s see if it goes anywhere though...and please, pick up the pacing. Go crazy next season TWD. This playground has endless possibilities, so use it fully TWD crew.
As for Fear, not bad. I did like the new characters (minus the dumb things they did) and the ending wasn’t bad. I also don’t mind Morgan being that ‘bridge’ for both Walking Dead shows...the crossover has begun!

Why not just talk to each other and decide what to do? Why does Rick get to decide what happens to Negan and no one else's opinions matter? I know it's less dramatic and less conflict that way, but I was super annoyed. Maybe if Rick had told them that he wasn't going to kill Negan because of Carl, Maggie wouldn't have helped to bring them down.
I do have to admit that I've only been half watching for a couple of seasons, I usually multitask while I'm watching, so it may be that I missed something that explained everything. I'm not as invested in this show as I used to be (above rant excluded, I guess).
Did anyone see Eugene in the last segment? Did he stay with the Saviors or go back to Alexandria?
-
I did not see Eugene in the last segment. That's an interesting point. I was also wondering who was in charge of the Sanctuary. In the comics, Dwight and Sherry took over, but right now in the show they're both MIA.
I like the direction of Maggie secretly working against Rick, but I was shocked that Jesus was with her on it. He seems more like the forgiving type. OTOH, I think Rosita would be on Maggie's side.

Yup, I found this totally out of character for him. Not thrilled with this twist.
-
I was underwhelmed with the finale.... Glad that the constant back and forth between the 2 groups is over, I felt that they dragged it on way too long. It was to the point that I had started waiting to watch it later in the week. I can't say that I was surprised by Eugene, kind of thought that he had something up his sleeve.
Tho, I do agree with others.... didn't see Jesus siding with Maggie about doing away with Negan.

Remember when Rick quietly threatened Negan? I predict Rick will keep his promise and eventually kill Negan at some point.
I stand corrected. Rick's decision to spare Negan came as an unexpected surprise.

Loved your review! I too was surprised that Rick spared Negan. I also didn't understand the purpose of the stained glass windows when Rick and Negan were fighting.
-
We watched both Walking Dead & Fear the Walking Dead last night at one of our local movie theaters - Fathom events thing. It was a lot of fun being in a sold-out theater, with everyone reacting, clapping, etc. It was weird though -- in a big room (theater), full of people....I kept feeling like the cast were going to walk out at any moment and Q&A was going to start. I think all these SDCC panels have skewed my reality - those things don't happen in everyday life. LOL ;D
-

I though Maggie's disappointment was heartbreaking. Wth why didn't Rick kill Negan? I took the stained glass windows, which are found in churches, as symbolic of Rick's enlightenment (sort of enlightenment?). He comes full circle. He says, "My mercy has overcome my wrath." Which has spiritual overtones, spirit conquering the flesh. Lol or not. :)

Anyone have theories on the helicopters and the woman "trading knowledge" for next season? I wonder if the pastor getting sick is going to have an important role later.

My theory is that Georgie is Pamela Milton from the comics. (Warning, possible spoilers if you read this link).
http://walkingdead.wikia.com/wiki/Pamela_Milton_(Comic_Series) (http://walkingdead.wikia.com/wiki/Pamela_Milton_(Comic_Series))
I think that the helicopter might be from Pamela's/Georgie's people.
-
Oh yes, I think you're right.
-
Did anyone else think that Rick took a cheap shot at Negan at the end?
-
Did anyone else think that Rick took a cheap shot at Negan at the end?
Well, Negan sort of deserved it. But it is also the culmination of this particular character arc. He was growing darker, lying, killing anyone who was not his crew, trusting no one, etc. and in that moment he saw how far he’d fallen. He saw what Carl feared most. In that moment he made the choice of mercy over wrath. Would he have gotten there without such a catalyst? Maybe.

With the news that Andrew Lincoln is leaving TWD after this season, the series is (most likely) “dead” now. That one actress isn’t happy with the pay and won’t show up much in season 9...now today’s news...I think it’s time to say goodbye to this series.

I love(d) TWD, but don't see how it can survive without Rick Grimes. It was hard enough when Carl exited. I hope they go out with a great episode and don't let this great series just become horrible and get canceled.
