Used an Uber from the airport to the Hard Rock.  Cost was $13.  Cheaper than a taxi!

Lyft has a sweet deal right now where if you sign up as a first time user it let's you have $45 credit toward your first 3 rides. We got a free trip from the airport with a cool driver!

Uber saved us a lot of money this year on rides.  We also took it from the airport to Hard Rock for $13.  Last time we stayed at the Days Inn and had taken a taxi for more than that.  I understand why the cab companies don't like them, but it was nice to be in the back seat and not see a meter upticking for each second we were stopped at a super long light.

Meters normally run on mileage, not time don't they?

Taxis charge based on time and distance.

^__~

Quote
A taxi meter uses electric pulses to measure both distance and time. To get the distance traveled, the meter relies on a sensor attached to the cab's transmission. The sensor sends an electric pulse to the meter every time the cab travels a given distance. Inside the meter itself is a timer that sends out a pulse when a set amount of time passes. Pulses come from either sensor at intervals that are smaller than the fare interval. For example, a cab might charge you based on every 100 yards (91.4 meters) of travel, but the distance meter will pulse at each yard (0.9 meters). When the meter gets 100 pulses, it adds to the amount of the fare.

Here's an example of fares from New York City. Just hailing a cab and getting in will cost you $2.50. For every fifth of a mile (0.3 kilometers) you travel, 40 cents is added to the fare (a fifth of a mile is four city blocks). For every minute the cab sits without moving, another 40 cents gets added to the fare.

I used a cab a few times and YES it goes by time which during peak times could be very expensive!!

I used Lyft once when I first arrived on Tuesday to get from the airport to the Omni, and it was like $15 before tip.

Used Uber the rest of the time and the prices were cheap! $9 to get to the airport from Omni when leaving Monday afternoon.

So I think Uber may be priced better in San Diego. Here in Portland both Lyft and Uber cost about the same.

This was the first i utilized Uber and Lyft.  They made parts of the con more doable.

Uber is almost always lower except for during surge pricing and then they can go up to 3x times and Lyft only maxes at 2x pricing.  This is from a driver who does both explaining how it all works, but the price difference is usually only a few dollars.
