UPDATE 3/19/19
Everyone who is eligible should go to the Hotel Exchange section and fill out the necessary information. The form to do so will be taken down with no notice shortly after the lottery date is announced.
UPDATE 3/12/19
The FoCC SDCC 2019 Hotel Exchange section of the forum is now open. We strongly recommend that if you are interested in participating in the Hotel Exchange that you check out this area immediately. There is a form that needs to be filled out before the actual lottery takes place. For more details, please see the SDCC 2019 Hotel Exchange section of the forums.
Please note that the Hotel Exchange section is a private area of the forum that is only visible to eligible members. Eligibility has already been determined and was made based on members' activity levels. If you are not able to see the private area, then you did not meet the criteria. The list of eligible members will not be changed, and no more people will be added to the area for this year. To be a part of the Hotel Exchange next year, please remain on the forum and contribute, to become an active member.
It is not in the nature of FoCC to exclude people. The forums are open to all and we encourage new members to join. However, over the past few years we have noticed a trend of people coming to the forum only for the hotel exchange and this caused some serious security concerns, since there is a lot of private information involved in these exchanges. Our priority (and the reason the Hotel Exchange was created in the first place) is to give back to the active forum members who contribute to the community as a whole. We strongly encourage new members to stick around and become involved in everything else the forum has to offer. This site is a great resource of information for all things Comic Con, and as SDCC approaches there will be many threads about a wide variety of topics, from programming and offsites to cosplay and packing. You do not have to be a part of the Hotel Exchange to be a part of FoCC.
We understand that some may be disappointed to not be a part of the Hotel Exchange. We hope that you will stick around and be a part of the exchange with us next year.
Original Post
Even though we don't yet have a Hotel Lottery date, we have volunteers who are already preparing for the aftermath of the lottery. As you know, for the past few years FoCC has hosted an exchange area where those who have an extra hotel room can offer it up to our community. There are also trades of the hotel rooms received in the sale. This becomes quite a bit of work for the volunteers who are managing the process! Our usual volunteers are unavailable this year, due to life circumstances, so we have a team of newer people taking on this massive project. As a result, some changes are being made to the process, in order to make things easier on the volunteers.
Our focus is to make this hotel exchange available to our FoCC members who are active in the forum throughout the year. Therefore, the hotel exchange this year will be in a locked area of the website that is only available to active members. Of course, everyone is expected to participate in the sale if they want to be a part of the exchange. Make sure that you stay active on FoCC to be a part of this year’s hotel exchange!
More information on the exchange will be posted as the sale date approaches.

Thank you for the update and special thanks to the volunteers who are helping out.

I got a pit in my stomach just reading the post title. Freakin hotelpocalypse...

SAME, tbh. I felt the stomach drop the moment I saw the title. *prayer circle for the luck of all FoCC members attending this year*

Concur with @DRWHO42! This forum is amazing, and we (users) forget the many hours put into it by volunteers!

I've said this before, but compared to badge buying, my stress levels for hotels is much lower. With badge buying, if you're shut out, then you're shut out. Your chances of going to SDCC drop to near zero (unless you win a contest or happen to have a Professional or Exhibitor friend with extra pass). But with hotels, I've been shut out before, and yet I still ended up with a downtown hotel, thanks to friends and strangers who had extra rooms, or just being persistent in constantly checking for room availabilities and pouncing on them w/o a second's consideration. And this goes for room availabilities for 1-2 nights... I've had to switch hotels mid-SDCC. And you have to remember, you WILL get a hotel room, because there's always going to be availability, maybe not Downtown where most of us want to be, but definitely around Hotel Circle. So chances of being homeless for SDCC are near zero.

Agree 100%
That's my experience as well.
I stayed on Shelter Island my first year and the hotel was on the Shuttle route. It was fine. :)

Well-said! I've stayed at Hotel Circle, Harbor Island, and Downtown; each location has added to the SDCC experience in a different way!

Curious what being active in the forum is, is it for example having a certain amount of post thought out the year? Just one post? Just checking the forum out?
Thanks for satisfying my curiosity.

Shannon, it means having a presence here on the forum and contributing to the discussions.

A major thank you to all!

Thanks for that, I thought that might be the case.
And thank you to you and all the other volunteers who give up your time to help put these things in place.
-
Thanks for the update. I am dreading hotel apocalypse. It is so stressful. Haven’t been part of the exchange before but plan on doing it this year. Last year I missed the sign up by two days.
-
thanks for the update TJ, and thanks to all the volunteers.
now that we have stayed downtown the last 3 years, my wife and daughter love being close, as do I. i too dread the hotelapocalypse. but at least i will be ready to go when it does happen. ;)
-
I'm grateful to the team of volunteers who run this. I haven't needed to use it, but I have been able to help someone when we went to SDCC our first year in 2016.
-
I know I haven't said it enough but thank you to all of the volunteers who contribute to Friends of Comic-Con. I know the new volunteers working on hotels will be using a lot of their personal time to do this and it is appreciated.
-
Joining the chorus of thank you's to the volunteers who help. You guys are amazing and generous and I appreciate your efforts beyond words.
-
Your recognition is very much appreciated by everyone who works on this project. We hope that you will extend this appreciation to some patience and understanding with this year's exchange. We are making some changes to the process, both to make it easier for the volunteers, and to ensure that the information is as accurate as possible. More information regarding these changes will be announced soon.

Anyone have any idea /predictions on whe the lottery will happen ? ???

I totally agree!!!
I have given away a room and been given a room.... the help that this forum has provided me over the years has been awesome!
-
The last few years, I ended up with great downtown hotels thanks to the good people of this forum. I hope to be able to give back and brighten someone's con this year.
-
I am READY TO RUMBLE! More hotel info couldn't come soon enough.

I also wouldn't mind lasagna.
In all seriousness this exchange is awesome. I've been on both the receiving and giving end of rooms and it is just magical to be a part of the community that looks out for con goers!

Same. My first year staying downtown, I was able to do so because of these forums. The last couple of years, I've been able to help others, and it's all been a great experience.
-
Thank you for the update and thank you to all the volunteers in helping with this :)
I am hoping lottery luck is with me this year and I won't need to do any room exchange but it certainly helps to have this safety net. It has saved me in past years O:-)

When is the hotel lottery or is it still unknown?
Thanks

Thanks so much for all you do! I am mostly a lurker but was able to help a few with badges and hotels last year. Hope to do the same this year!

Still unknown, but likely early/mid April.

For those of us who did not meet the eligibility and if (and this is a big if) we get an extra room will there be a thread for us to post or should be just post in the housing parking and transport section individually?
-
There will be a place for you to post.
Thank you for being willing to offer your room to the FoCC community!
-
Thanks for letting me know.
And as for offering a room if I get an extra, the FoCC Community has helped me so much with planning, making new friends and everything else that I think its only right that they can get first chance.
-
Thank you for setting all this up. Through this forum, I have been able to join buying groups to get SDCC passes and be passed a Gaslamp hotel my last SDCC. Thank you all.
-
Adding my thanks to everyone involved in the Hotel Exchange process. This is the first time I've joined and though I hope I won't need to use it, I'm getting a little "newbie" rush after all these years. ;D
-
For me, after more than 10 years, I still get a little rush when I do stuff like this... ;D
-
Guess I didn’t make the cut. Good luck to everyone who did. I’ll keep my fingers crossed for the lottery.

Pegleg, please stick around the site. There is so much more than the hotel exchange. If you check out the other things FoCC has to offer, then you are likely to qualify next year. We help each other with all kinds of things here, and we’d love to see you in other threads.

I echo this.
I found this forum after I'd already gotten tickets our first year and the forum was great just in terms of PLANNING. How do I line up? Where do I go? How do I make the best use of my time?
When we finally got to SDCC I had people asking me about stuff and I knew the answers because I had spent so much time here!

I know how u feel pegleg1204 . Ive been apart of this forum since 2016 and didnt make the cut either . . .
-
Hi - Don't think I made it either. I have given and gotten hotels here so hopefully all will work out during the lottery and I will have a hotel to contribute. Good luck all.
-
This is a reminder for those who are eligible to go to the Hotel Exchange section and fill out your information ASAP. You will not be able to do sso after the lottery takes place.
-
For what it's worth, I think it's good to keep in mind that-- unlike the mad rush for badges-- the mad rush for hotel rooms is always going to get you SOMEthing. Maybe it's not the exact one you want, but at least you don't have to worry about walking away empty-handed. (And if you're one of the seasoned Hall H vets, then the irony is that you'll likely be camping out on the ground for a night anyhow, despite having paid for a perfectly good room, lol.)
-
You make an excellent point Poggledoo. There are ALWAYS hotel rooms available, even at the last minute. No matter what, everyone WILL have a room for Comic Con.
-
Thanks again for organizing and managing. We'll see if the lottery gods are favorable. Some years I've been able to contribute rooms, some years not.
-
I understand why it’s being done this way, but I gotta say I’m a little disappointed that post count is the determining factor for being allowed to participate, rather than the substantive contributions that many of us have made in badge sales, previous hotel exchanges and parking (every year since 2013 in my case).
-

Thank you for your feedback, Darnvader. I am sorry that you were not eligible. I hope that you will still enjoy all of the other informational resources FoCC has to offer regarding SDCC.
The parking exchange will be open to everyone.
-
To reiterate TJ, thanks for the feedback. To clarify, post count was not a soul determining factor in who got access to the hotel exchange. There were a number of factors based on forum participation. So be active, but don't think you need to inflate your post count to be considered an active member of the community.
-
Indeed!
A major thank you to all!
Is the hotel exchange form closed.fornme to participate? If.not, where is the kink?

Thanks to both of you for replying. To be clear, I'm not asking you to make me eligible this year, as I understand that you have to be consistent with whatever factors you've chosen for eligibility.
I would point out my actual contributions to this community though. Just including myself and my wife (and not the very productive subgroup I brought into this community):
2015:
<per request of Buying Group leaders, i am removing information abt buying groups- admin alyssa>
Provided Hilton Bayfront Hotel Room to group member
2016:
<per request of Buying Group leaders, i am removing information abt buying groups- admin alyssa>
Received Hotel Z reservation from group member
Provided all kinds of NerdHQ tickets that I don't care to research right now to group members, and received some in return.
2017:
<per request of Buying Group leaders, i am removing information abt buying groups- admin alyssa>
Provided Group 1 parking pass to group member
2018:
<per request of Buying Group leaders, i am removing information abt buying groups- admin alyssa>
2019:
<per request of Buying Group leaders, i am removing information abt buying groups- admin alyssa>
I think it's hard to argue that I haven't been a substantial net-positive to the community. When you say "I hope that you will still enjoy all of the other informational resources FoCC has to offer regarding SDCC", I think the bigger concern should be "I hope that you will continue to make substantial contributions to the community, notwithstanding being excluded from this particular exchange." And of course I will, but I ask that you please reconsider this policy for future years.
[start Note from admin alyssa:]
While we do encourage folks to share with in their buying groups we do try and keep what goes on in buying group in their specific groups. kinda like what happens in Vegus stays in Vegus.... But those transactions between group members are not on the forum in general.
Be assured we would love nothing more then to ease up on the restriction!![end]
-
Is the hotel exchange form closed.fornme to participate? If.not, where is the kink?
I apologize that you did not qualify for the exchange at this time. The list has already been determined.
-
Darnvader, if sounds as if while you are not active on the forums, you have been active in your buying group. I know that many of the buying groups often help each other during hotels and with other aspects of the SDCC experience. You may wish to contact your buying group leader and see if they are offering a small hotel exchange within the buying group. That would be a way for you to participate in an exchange with the people who know you best.
-
Please note that buying group stats were not factored into the determination. We appreciate everyone in the buying groups, all the data is stored outside the forum by group leaders and is not shared on the forum. This is done due to the sensitive information involved in the sale and to maintain privacy for those involved.
-
Thanks, [member=1]alyssa[/member]. All totally fair. I appreciate all of the time and effort you all put into organizing everything. It's also good to know going forward that there is a distinction between buying group activity and larger forum activity.
-

I have to admit I don't want to ease up, if anything I want to put more in place!
-
I am not a part of the exchange this year and my husband and I are not sweating it. We have a backup hotel already so if we don’t get anything in the sale we are set. :)
For us where we stay is only a small part of the experience of SDCC. Being able to see all of our friends we have made over the years is what makes the trip to SDCC worth it. :)
Sure it is nice to stay downtown but we are happy to just be going back this year! :)
-
I understand that I am not eligible this year, but I would love to understand a little bit better what factors were considered in determining who is an active forum member. Other than post count, how can I demonstrate being an active member? I have gone to meetups at the con, donated funds, given away rooms in several previous exchanges, and been a member since 2015. Should I just post more? Or are there other things I can do?
I want to express that this is not meant as a complaint or criticism–––I am SO very appreciative of all that the volunteers and mods do! I just want to be a better forum member and wonder how I can do that outside of just posting a ton. I want to give back to this forum that I have learned so much from over the years.
Thanks for any guidance you can offer.

We do not have a set list of criteria for members who were part of the forum. Post count was not the only deciding factor. Members who have contributed in a meaningful way in other forum projects have also been included. Additionally, some members with high post counts were not included.
Additionally, the same people running it this year will not be running it next year. Next year's team may have different requirements, or no requirements at all. This was only for this year's group of volunteers.
-
Good luck to you all. Have fun at the Con!

Oh, man, am I so behind on life this year. I'm assuming that I was not near active enough to be eligible. If I did meet the eligibility requirements, would finding the private forum have been pretty obvious? Just making sure that I am not completely missing something sitting right in front of my nose.
Best of luck to everyone!

Sorry but yes, it would have been obvious, and submissions were closed this morning. Best of luck to you as well!

Veterans will know this but for the newbies double check your credit cards for room. It would be terrible to actually get in only to have to scramble to find the right card.

Oh no. I'm a lurker, and don't often contribute to any forums, and then I've been SUPER busy this last month, so apparently I missed it. :(
I know this means I'm definitely out for the spreadsheet where you just submit your request and people who have the rooms come to you, but will there still be the form you can post stuff and people can contact you if they want it (the first come first served one)?
I guess I'm going to have to go against my nature and make myself stop lurking and submit a bit more, in future. :(

if last year was any indication, there will probably be less excess rooms this year.
traditionally we have not had an 'overflow' thread. I think that will depend on how the sale is going. Remember most folks, if they have an excess room tend to give it to folks they're familiar with- like in their buying groups etc.
re participating more, during the year we have a fair amount of other topics to contribute too. Local con's, media shows both movies and tv, collectables or just random chat- about the wacky world of non-geeks (so called 'norm's' see that is coming back to you [member=3]Chris[/member]).
-
But there will be an overflow? I know it's not likely, but I found the forum late last year, and actually managed to find a room at the Westin Gaslamp through that second spreadsheet. It was a lifesaver that I am eternally grateful for.
And yes, I know the forum stays pretty active. I was here of and on! I just didn't say much. Clearly that was a mistake.

Ooh, what time Tuesday? We do usually try and get up there a day early, so I will definitely try if we're there in time (depends on work schedules, we're from LA).

it usually starts around 3 or 4, watch for posts from [member=1527]dolphina[/member] she's got a thread somewhere- LOL
and goes till folks peal off for supper plans-
everyone's invited - there isn't any give-aways or anything like that- it just gives us a time to chill once we get into town ;)

What is the magic post count number to make it into the super secret in group?
There is no magical post count. There are people with high post counts that were not in the group and people with low post counts that were. We judged based on forum participation.
But, as stated, those of us who ran it this year won't be running it this year so there may not be any requirements at all next time.

Not sure if you're joking but no. Post count was not the deciding factor. People with low post counts are part of the exchange and some people with high post counts are not. Very few people here have over 1000 posts.

[member=2790]cciveg[/member] You can see the private area, right? You should be able to. It was open for over a month before the sale.
-
But there will be an overflow? I know it's not likely, but I found the forum late last year, and actually managed to find a room at the Westin Gaslamp through that second spreadsheet. It was a lifesaver that I am eternally grateful for.
And yes, I know the forum stays pretty active. I was here of and on! I just didn't say much. Clearly that was a mistake.
I’d say keep your eyes on the forum. I was not in the hotel exchange last year(too late to the party), but did end up with a room I didn’t need. Since I couldn’t put it in the spreadsheet, rather than let it go back to On-Peak, I offered it up in the thread as a sort-of unofficial “exchange”. I know a few others did the same.
There can be rooms that languish on the spreadsheet for one reason or another. They tend to be offered up at the last minute.

Dumb question, but if I was able to fill out the form this year, does that mean I have access to the private area?
I can’t see that area, but maybe I’m looking in the wrong place or was ineligible.

Yes. The form was only posted in the private area. If you filled it out outside of that, we would have caught it.

The area that had the link to the form is the Private Area :)

Ha! Okay. I needed to use my eyes I guess. I found it!
Also, great because I like my odds of being able to help someone out this year.

if last year was any indication, there will probably be less excess rooms this year.
traditionally we have not had an 'overflow' thread.
Norms. :)

Yes, thank you TardisMom! I did, but neglected to enter my data. But that part was on me, as they say. I hope you have good luck with your lodging choice.

I am glad this is how it was done. There are other sites where they go hard line #posts and year. And while that makes it very clear who is eligible and who is not. it also creates a lot of fluff posts and what not. And I totally understand those who believe (and are true) they posted enough legit or been here long enough to be in the hotel list. And having that feeling I empathize and that sux.
Honestly maybe I have a different point of view. Being "deemed" eligible for the hotel exchange is a privilege. Not a right. And its their call. Honestly its the moderators and founders playbox. Its their labor of love and the core of it is they can honestly do what they want to do with it. I know that can construed as a little harsh but this is not an official comic-con site where they are required to follow any rules but their own and they do their best to have us enjoy talking about our nerd stuff and help each other out.
I loved last year. I get a lot of information here every year. And try to give it or hotels when I can (whether people want it or its useful or not). I got and have given hotels here (from a very generous person (theNeck) and to another member). Another great experience I had last year was someone wanted the lego falcon that i was fortunate to win in the lottery.
While I am a Lego and Star Wars fan. I had a higher preference to experience a conan show with the aquaman cast. I post here. Someone was willing to trade their extra tickets to conan for my lego falcon which i offered. When i met up with them she wanted to pay me for the falcon. That really go to my heart to be honest. They gave me the experience of conan i would not have had (it was incredible and a highlight) for the "opportunity" to buy the lego falcon from me. I said um you can have it lol. That in a nutshell was what focc was. Creating win-win scenarios.
Anyhew. Sorry for the long post. I still consider myself a newb here but I truly try to appreciate how this place has enhanced my nerd and sdcc experience. Creators and mods thanks for all your work and time and efforts. It is so appreciated and I speak for many i believe.

I don't see the private hotel exchange form so I'm not part of it. This I understand. However mods, in the event where I have an extra hotel to offer, where in this forum can I offer it?

I understand I'm new here as well, but I may have extra hotels to offer tomorrow as well.
-
I was not eligible for the exchange this year, but as it turns out I have an extra room to offer as well.
EDIT: This room is spoken for.
-
might have a embassy suites hotel 1 king available for offer?
-
I'm very confused. I went looking for the room exchange and extra room forms. I don't see a section entitled "Hotel Exchange" so I assume I haven't made the cut. However, I've been an active member for several years and was even able to gratefully offer the Grand Hyatt last year to a forum member. This year, I have another room to offer and was going to offer it here, as well as see about an exchange, but it seems I am unable to do so. I enjoy SDCC and enjoy this forum, but I guess i will take my extra room elsewhere this year.
-
If you'd like to offer a room, lets start a single separate thread.....for offers. Be prepared to be deluged

I was wondering if instances like this would happen this year. :'(

Just looking for the step-by-step instructions provided last year for transferring your room to a friend. Did they get moved to the private area as well?
-

Can we do that? We could start an offer thread and a “Beg Thread”. I’d be happy to start the begging. ;D

Wondering where to go where people post the rooms they are giving away too.

Strange that I remember you being here several years. I also remember several posts, but your post count is down to 13? Did you delete a lot of past posts?
-
I think I missed out on that exchange room form if we have to fill one out yearly. I know I filled one out last year because I managed to get a room from [member=4076]sideproject[/member] over at Shelter Island. Hoping to find one over there again since we really liked that location.
-
No luck in the hotel lottery again this year (year 4 for us not scoring LOL) Good luck to all. Hopefully the second round will be better.
UPDATE: A friend was able to get us a room so we are set for Comic Con! You can strike through my name on the Exchange form. thanks again for this awesome forum!!

Yay! Glad I could help last year. Hopefully this year someone can help both of us. :o
I think the "official" sign up for trades is closed... not sure how it's going to work with people this year.
-

I don't think I deleted any posts, unless it was by accident. I just don't post that much...I have a full time job! And 2 dogs! But I still enjoy this forum and most of all I enjoy the fact that there are like-minded people here that won't try to upcharge you for hotel rooms or scam you. And perhaps make some new friends at the con. We all want the same thing...or so I thought.

There's a BadWolf on here as well.

That must be who I am thinking of. Thank you!

It would be interesting to look at how many people or what type of room was requeated and how many/what days.
-
A friend got Marriott Gaslamp for me and I really need a second room there for my guest and his son - any kind soul able to spare ?
A friend of mine got the Marriott Gaslamp, but it was his 6th choice. If you happen to end up with one of his top 5, I am sure he would be willing to trade.
-
For the Hotel Exchange sheet, is there a way to also include how many rooms needed?
-
For the Hotel Exchange sheet, is there a way to also include how many rooms needed?
It was decided that to be fair to everyone, only one room could be requested. People were told to have their roommates/friends request separately if they needed a second room.
-
just a reminder, this is NOT the place to post if you need a room. any such posts will be moved to the 'Asking' thread without warning.
Please don't make work for me & the moderators, think before you post!
-
Wondering where to go where people post the rooms they are giving away too.
there is a thread for folks that want to offer a room. however, most folks perfer to look through the 'Asking' thread and select a person to offer it to rather then offer it to anyone.
-
Did anyone or know anyone that got a hotel at Shelter Island?
Just wondering if any of those hotels went out. All I seem to see are people offering hotels downtown. We got downtown, but looking for one in Shelter Island.

My friend has Kona Kai Resort Spa and Marina on Shelter Island. What downtown hotel do you have if you don't mind me asking?
-
If we are listed on the exchange spreadsheet, can we still post in the “Asking” thread without ruffling any feathers? Would that be considered a duplicate request?

You can ask both places as long as you update your status in the exchange area when you get a room.

The form in the official hotel exchange has been reopened ONLY for those who are eligible but who missed filling it out before the lottery. Please check the hotel exchange area for the link.

I missed the sign up for this/eligibility- my fault- but I was wondering what other options I have to transfer a room at the Sheraton Bayside from the 16th through the 22nd.

Did you find it yet, [member=3236]stl_ben[/member] ? There are 2 hotel offer areas. One under "SDCC 2019 Hotel Exchange"(that not everyone has access to) and one sub headed as"hotel offers" under "Housing.."

I stated this in the other thread, but qualification for the exchange was not based on post count. People with low post counts are part of it and some people with high post counts are not. Someone will reach out with details as requested.

I already deleted my post from the trade thread so I can no longer edit, but I just wanted to say THANKS AGAIN to [member=5893]teppope[/member] for giving us a hotel at our desired location.

Looking for a quad room from Thurs. 7/18-Mon 7/22. 2 adults and 2 kids.
I am pretty open to anywhere on the shuttle route. I am getting really worried that we won't get anything at all :(
Thanks so much.

No worries! Just getting you to the proper thread :)

You didn't have a hotel and you heard about this FoCC place where people have good luck getting hotels. You rush over and your first post is you want one of the most requested hotels. Let's be realistic here, wave 2 is already out, your chances of getting one here are close to zero.
So did you come here in vain? If you disappear, yes. If you stick around, no.
This is a community, which means the more you stick around and chat the more likely you are find help next year and just maybe you will luck out and be able to help. People here tend to pick people to help that they have had good interactions with, or maybe helped them out in the past. What does that mean? Being rude will get you nowhere!
So now that you are here take time to read the forum rules and announcements: https://www.friendsofcc.com/forum/index.php?board=10.0
Say hello in the welcome thread so people can get to know you: https://www.friendsofcc.com/forum/index.php?topic=218.msg257633#msg257633
Maybe let people know what inspired your forum name: https://www.friendsofcc.com/forum/index.php?topic=1582.0
Then read everything like there is no tomorrow because the information here can help you have a better con. Even while you are staying at that mission valley hotel!
