Title: Books - What are you reading?
Post by: SyndE on February 10, 2015, 11:44:44 AM
(And maybe this time I'll be better about maintaining it!)

Been a very slow year for me reading so far. Lots of books started and discarded, only two actual novels finished and enjoyed:

+ Wolf in White Van / John Darnielle
+ Revival / Stephen King

FYI, here's my reading log from 2014: http://syndicateproduct.tumblr.com/post/107259295746/2014-reading-log (http://syndicateproduct.tumblr.com/post/107259295746/2014-reading-log)

So, what's everyone been reading this year?

Forum Housekeeping:

Deleted "Fresh again for 2015!" from the title to make this the one home for discussion of all things related to "What Are You Reading" throughout the - & every - year :)

Recently I started reading the Peter V Brett Demon Cycle series. He will be at ECCC and I am looking forward to seeing him there and picking up the fourth book in the series!

I recently finished The Light Between Oceans by M.L. Stedman.  Next up is The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins, along with multiple travel books for Japan, Tokyo and Kyoto.  Oh, and re-reading Insurgent before the movie is released.

Is listening to Neal Stephenson's work easier than reading it? Last year I got about a third of the way through REAMDE and gave up out of shear frustration. And I usually enjoy his work!

I really enjoyed the Baroque Cycle, and especially it's links to the "Cryptonomicon"

Historical Fiction of this type is something I really love getting in to, especially when someone like Stephenson goes into the mundane things of everyday life.  I'd really like for him to further explore some more of this "world".

Just completed (yet another!) Fred Saberhagen, his eerily prescient 1981 Octagon. On par with his usual standard of awesome :)

Probably, I really like the narrators they use I really enjoyed REAMDE.

With Stephenson you really need to be in the right mood/mode to get into his books. It took a second try for me to get into Quicksilver the first book in this series, which is really 3 books, and not really until the second part of Quicksilver :D

Anyone else ever go through one of those phases where you can't get into *anything* you try to read? That's been happening to me a lot this year. I pick something up, give it a good try, and just have no interest. As an avid reader (OK, I have a book problem. Just ask birmabang for confirmation on that), I wonder if I'm just going through my "dumbening" (like Lisa worried about on The Simpsons).

I've been trying to read short story and essay collections, and also comic strip collections, comics, and stand-alone graphic novels.

That being said, here's a few things I've enjoyed the past few weeks:
+ Silver Screen Fiend // Patton Oswalt. (I LOVED this. Fantastic. Hoping he shows up at SDCC so I can track him down.)
+ Displacement // Lucy Knisely (Yikes. I didn't think any book could be more depressing than Roz Chast's "Can't We Talk About Something More Pleasant" from last year, but certainly makes an effort. This is a GN of Lucy's experience taking her very elderly grandparents on a cruise.)

Did not finish:
+ Station Eleven // Emily St. John Mandel (I'm hoping my book club will let me know what happened in the second half of the book, because I could not slog through this. I have no idea how it was a National Book Award finalist last year.)

Anyone else ever get Reading Fatigue?

Oooo... Gone Girl is an amazingly well-written book that required a long shower upon finishing, and I will never need to read again.

I do want to read her previous two novels, but I have to pace myself.

Yesterday I started re-reading Slaughterhouse-Five again. For the n-th time.

I think I'll get this one next week. Star Wars Heir to the Jedi.  http://is.gd/r9ujpM

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. . . .

A thrilling new adventure set between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back, and-for the first time ever-written entirely from Luke Skywalker’s first-person point of view.

I finished Dark Places by Gillian Flynn.  Two days, so obviously I was drawn in.  I'd recommend it!

I've never read Slaughterhouse Five or many of the other "classics" mentioned.  I need to start a reading list from this thread!

I bogged down in Wheel of Time when the books were first coming out. I thought they were never going to come to a conclusion. Now that the series is finished, I may give them a try again. I really love Sanderson's character development.

I was getting tired of them, much like I totally fell out of favor with the Game of Thrones books (after #4), but when Sanderson took the reins to finish Wheel of Time, it was excellent I thought.  That turned me onto Way of Kings.  Waiting for that next book now.

I just finished "The Martian" by Andy Weir, and it was amazing. Near-future hard sci-fi, reminiscent of Interstellar and Gravity, but more reality-based. I'm telling everyone I know that likes sci-fi at all to read it.

I read this at the beginning of the year. It is amazing and definitely one of my favorite recent sci-fi novels. I recommended it to a ton of people, but I do warn them that the first part of the book is heavy on the science. That was one reason I loved it, but I know that's not for everyone.

Title: Re: Books - What are you reading?
Post by: semigeekgirl on March 09, 2015, 03:51:12 PM
Hmm. It IS very science and math-heavy, but I felt like it really walked you through it in an entertaining way, so that if that's not your thing you could just sort of follow along and assume the math worked out. I LOVED the math and science, though, so mine is not an unbiased point of view.  :D

Ooo, fun thread!  Fellow fantasy and scifi readers, yay!

I love Sanderson, have read all his stuff but the Wheel of time ending books. (I made it thru book 7 or so of the original series before I quit, and I just can't bring myself to slog through to get to the end.   Maybe someone will do a cliff notes version, IDK). I just finished Firefight and am really enjoying the post-apocalyptic super villain world he has created

I just started reading Joe Abercrombie's First Law series, which has lots of anti-heros.   The characters are crazy unlikeable, but I keep coming back for more books, so I guess that says something.

I waffle back and forth between epic fantasy and hard scifi, and right now I am in my fantasy period, so no recent scifi stuff lately.   I have downloaded The Shell Collector by Hugh Howey and have that queued up to read.  Totally stoked he is going to be a guest at SDCC.  Hoping for some announcements related to the Wool series.

I do own a Kindle e-reader, and that thing has been a blessing and a curse.   I used to have to wait to go to the bookstore to buy the next book in a new to me series, now I just buy the next one right after finishing the first one.   So I totally binge read Netflix style.   BUT, I have found waaaaay better authors than I used to just perusing the Barnes and Noble shelves.   Amazons suggestion system is actually pretty good, and their free/low price sales they do for new authors are great.   I just signed up for Kindle Unlimited, but they need to expand the scifi/fantasy catalog more.   There is good stuff in there now (Wool is included), but I had already purchased a lot of it before joining the subscription.

A Game of Thrones: A Song of Ice and Fire. I got the paperback as swag the last time GoT had their panel in Ballroom 20. Sadly I suck at finishing books these days so I decided to go the audiobook route. It makes me look forward to my commute. I'm hoping to catch up to the show by the time it starts again next month but doubt it's going to happen.

Oh I want to read half the world, i got half a king at comic con and enjoyed it, though i still have the other 3 books he wrote outside of the first law trilogy to read as well

since January I restarted the Drizzt series by RA Salvatore. He has 30 books in the series (not counting the cleric quintet which I am not re-reading). I've pretty much been on a rampage these two months and have gone through about 19 of the books but his newest one released last Tuesday so I am waiting to read that one until I 'catch up'

Just finished The Sculptor by Scott McCloud (of Understanding Comics fame). It was a big, thick GN, maybe about 500 pages. And yes, it was beautiful to look at, but it could have used some editing. And the ending was kind of one big cliche.

Next up: The full run of iZombie comics, all 28 issues.

I watched The Scribbler and now am working on getting a copy of the graphic novel; such an odd ball story that's totally up my alley.

I think im on book 2 in the GoT series but i liked his Wild Cards series better.  Its kinda like his take on superheros.

Im also trying to finish off The Dresden Files before the new one comes out and hopefully get into another of his series.

I've finished Mira Grants Newsflesh series and want to get into her Parasitalogy series.

Previous to that, like a lot of you, I read Girl on the Train. I liked it ok, the story picked up steam in the back half of the book. <groan> Sorry, I couldn't resist the pun.

Finished Station Eleven, and frankly you're not missing much. It was fine, but it seemed convinced it was being profound and deep while actually being fairly shallow and obvious. The world she created was interesting, but the story sort of went nowhere. I think that was part of the point - your story is a "story" even when it doesn't necessarily have a defined beginning-middle-end, but that wasn't really a revelation to me. I also thought it focused way too much on the coincidental ways things happened, and outlining for you exactly how each person/plotline came together. I felt like it was trying to make the mundane profound, and show that the things we believe to be profound are sometimes altogether too mundane, but I just couldn't connect with it on that level. It felt very shallow to me, and somewhat like it was trying too hard. I won't be seeking out the author's other work.

That said, Becky, you definitely should read Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn series before you read anything else.

My iPad is getting really heavy with all these ebooks to read! ;)  I will adjust the list accordingly!

Just finished reading Anathem by Neal Stephenson, great book !!!. At first I was hesitated reading this book because of the use of a different language , but that fear was over blown. Imagine Harry Potter , but instead of magic , it is your intelligence that gets you chosen to be put into these special enclaves of knowledge, separated from the rest of humanity until you are needed. The story builds slowly but once it kicks into gear, wow.

I loved Anathem. It's definitely a slow start, but amazing once you're in.
I've gotten a little stuck on Quicksilver. I put it down a couple of weeks ago and haven't been able to convince myself to pick it back up yet. I also started Ancillary Sword, and I'm about halfway through Ready Player One, which is great and much more fun than I expected.

My daughter again hijacked my list with a YA novel she wanted me to read, this time Cinder by Marissa Meyer.  I ended up enjoying it and finishing it in less than a week.  It takes the Cinderella fairy tale and throws in androids, cyborgs, etc.  And it is the first in a series so my next read is now Scarlet (the 2nd book).

Just a warning, in case you have preferences regarding reading a book first vs. seeing an adaptation first, I've read that the series will incorporate all 3 of the books, not just the first one. The first book will be wrapped up by episode 5, with the last half of the season drawing from books 2 & 3.

When I was at SWCA Del Rey was giving out free SW paperback books so I ended up with 2 of them. Right now I am reading SW X-Wing Mercy Kill. I'll find out the name of the first book which I really did enjoy even though I'm not a die-hard SW fan.

Since Tardismom mentioned YA series, did anyone ever read the "I am Number Four" book series?

I did. Or at least I think I read all the ones that are currently out? They didn't seem to be on any type of schedule so I kind of lost track of them. I think I read the ones about Four, Five, Six, and Nine?

I liked them but didn't love them. I would read the rest if they ever come out, though.

I'm actually currently reading these; I've read the first 3 novels and am currently in the middle of the first set of "Lost Files." I thought the first book was just okay, but I really enjoyed 2 & 3. They aren't exactly great literature, but they're fun, light reads.

He is one of the reasons I went to my very first con (Wondercon) 3 years ago. I've read his books (I think ALL of them) for the past 30+ years and he had a panel at Wondercon and I had to go see this author whose books I had been reading all these years. My all-time favorites: The Watchers, Lightning, The Frankenstein Series, and The Odd Thomas Series.

Ooof. I'm having a spate of bad reading luck lately - lots of stuff that just didn't work for me at all.

However, I have nothing but great things to say about Kim Gordon's memoir GIRL IN A BAND. It is amazing and deserves all the praise that has been heaped upon it.

Currently reading jPOD by Douglas Coupland, and also trying to read more comics and GNs than usual because: Summer!

(OK, I've already read Childhood's End, Man in the High Castle, and Ready Player One. But I collect paperback editions of Childhood's End with different covers, my copy of Man in the High Castle was shredded, and I wasn't going to miss having a signed copy of Ready Player One!)

Some recent reads:

The Three / Sarah Lotz - This was the latest book club read. It was... fine. I didn't like how the author suddenly switched from writing an oral history (like WWZ) to a third person narrator near the end of the book.

Therese Raquin / Emile Zola - OK, full disclosure, I'm reading this because a version of it will be on Broadway (at the old Studio 54) this fall featuring Kiera Knightly and Matt Ryan.

Also working through the huge (800+ page) Drawn and Quarterly 25th Anniversary book, which I got from the library. Heavy!

Curious to hear what people think about Armada. I was mixed on Ready Player One, I mostly liked it, and the references in it hit my nostalgia sweet spot, but I kept getting put off by what I'll call the Stainless Steel Rat effect, (after Harry Harrison's books with which I have a similar odi et amo relationship,) where I would keep getting the sense that the author kept making things up and would just backfill the story. A bit of this is fine, I guess I'm just sensitive to anything more than a dash of iocane powder.

Just read the 1st 3 issues of Ales Kot's Material. Really powerful stuff, and the footnoted references and essays at the end will keep you busy.

Going to spend some time going through piles of old Deadpool comics, I guess this is due to the trailer but also figure it will get me in the proper mindset to watch the presidential candidate debate tonight.

Then planning to dive into Terry Pratchett's Discworld books, I have somehow not read any yet, should keep me busy for a while.

LOL, that's a good name for it! ;)

Robopocalypse is by Daniel Wilson. It's the same idea as World War Z: robots/machines becoming self-aware and rebelling against their human masters. Yeah, sounds kind of Terminator-esque, but it is told in a World War Z style - different voices across different continents, highlighting cultural impact and how humanity joins together to fight back.

I really enjoyed that style when I read Wold War Z.  It was really unfortunate they weren't able to translate it into film.   It would probably be better as an HBO series where each episode told a different story.

It is now added to my to-read section.

You're right. I hadn't thought of it that way, but it would make a much better TV series, with one 'story' per episode.

Finally read through some piles of comics that had been sitting around, 2 series in particular that I enjoyed much more than I thought I would.

The Darth Vader series from Marvel, which leads into the title spanning Vader Down arc that just started. Really good, very much the Vader we remember from the original trilogy, takes place after A New Hope. Important to read it before Vader Down and start with issue 1. I particularly like the

version of everyone's two favorite droids.

Bizarro, basically a wacky road trip with Bizarro and Jimmy Olsen through the DC world. Pretty silly but a fun, creative all ages title. Each issue has a page from a guest artist, such as Bill Sienkiewicz or Darwyn Cooke. As a quick example of the fun, at one point they meet up with Zatanna (doing a show in Branson no less.) Zatanna uses backwards words to do her magic, but who in the DC universe would you expect to be the best at anything backwards? Exactly. :)

Oh man that murder-droid protocol bot is easily my favorite expanded universe character!  Every panel that bot is in is freaking gold!
And I agree the Darth Vader comic is great: maybe my favorite ongoing comic these days!  The Star Wars proper book is also really good, but the Vader series really rides the perfect line between the Vader who was tough but clearly not at the top of the bureaucratic chain (think the scene in A NEW HOPE where Vader is getting taunted & arguing with high-brass) with the super terrifying Big Dog Vader from EMPIRE STRIKES BACK.

I really can't recommend enough how awesome this comic is if you're a Star Wars fan.  They just released the first storyline in trade paperback form to get you started so jump on that one for starters!

But I still had fun reading it and would recommend it.

Finished Ready Player One last week and LOVED IT.  Thanks for the suggestion.

I just finished reading the Walking Dead compendium volume 2. Much better than the first compendium I thought.

Just about to start Frank Beddor's Seeing Redd. I read the first one in the trilogy (The Looking Glass Wars) years ago and didn't realise that he wrote more. And I think he's going to SDCC this year.

Agreed on the WD. Next compendium is solid too and brings you pretty close to current on the comic. Will have to check out Beddor, don't think I've read anything by him.

And on the soon to be read pile, just saw this at the library and did a big double take.

Mycroft Holmes, by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (!!!) and Anna Waterhouse.

I read the preface. It's for sociopaths. I'll pass. Below are the 2nd and 3rd laws.

LAW 2: NEVER PUT TOO MUCH TRUST IN FRIENDS, LEARN HOW TO USE ENEMIES
Be wary of friends, they will betray you more quickly, for they are easily aroused to envy. They also become spoiled and tyrannical. But hire a former enemy and he will be more loyal than a friend, because he has more to prove. In fact, you have more to fear from friends than from enemies. If you have no enemies, find a way to make them.

LAW 3: CONCEAL YOUR INTENTIONS
Keep people off-balance and in the dark by never revealing the purpose behind your actions. If they have no clue what you are up to, they cannot prepare a defense. Guide them far enough down the wrong path, envelop
them in enough smoke, and by the time they realize your intentions, it will be too late.

Looking at my bookshelf, here are a half-dozen:

- Star Trek Deep Space Nine: Warpath, David Mack
- Star Trek Enterprise: The Romulan War: Beneath the Raptors Wing, Michael A. Martin
- From the Ruins of Empire, Pankaj Mishra
- Fire and Fury: The Allied Bombing of Germany 1942-45, Randall Hansen

Yeah, you're right. And it's long too, people can say what they want about Machiavelli, at he least he got to the point. Still might read it any way, if only so I can confidently ridicule it later. I've already got Law 46
well in hand, "Never appear too Perfect."

Thanks for the list, it's interesting, both the Desai and Mishra books were recently recommended to me by an Indian coworker.

I'm currently busting through so many books its crazy. I tend to stick to audiobooks since I work with photos (photography) when I'm at a computer. I'm now running out of ideas of what I should listen to. I listen to just about anything, Young Adult (Hunger Games, Red Queen, Vampire Academy) to more adult fictional stories (Game of Thrones; Sookie Stackhouse series; Tall, Dark and Dead)

So here's my question: What are you reading/What is a good series?
There will be no judgement, everyone has a different interests and tastes! This is one of the few ways I can hear about a book series I may not have originally looked at or heard about!  ^-^

j/k, Before SDCC I had to brave the attic and dig out an old 70's sci-fag mag to get signed. Read it through several times in the airport and everything in it was fascinating, stories, book/film reviews, science talk, etc.  Once con-brain has passed going to read the whole run.

Game of Thrones!

Yesterday ws the 20th anniversary of the first book! I already have 3 copies of it, looks like I'll probably be picking up another.

A Game of Thrones: The Illustrated Edition: A Song of Ice and Fire: Book One comes out in October.

I started re-reading Anne McCaffrey's Talents series (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/To_Ride_Pegasus#Series) on my flight home. It's all about the emergence of people with different abilities (telepathy, telekinesis, clairvoyance, etc.) and their integration into society. The first book starts off strong before spiraling off into nothingness; I sold my copy, and I never sell books. You can probably get by with the recap at the start of book 2.

After finishing that I moved onto the Tower and the Hive series, which is set later in the same universe. It's interesting for the first few books and then starts getting weird

, much like the Ender's Game series. I've yet to finish the series as a whole.

Also, because I mentioned it, the Ender's Game series (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ender%27s_Game_(series)). I'd recommend reading by publication date, not chronological order.

Haven't had a book thread in a while, so here's a book thread!  :)

Some recent events sent The March trilogy by Congressman John Lewis, Andrew Aydin and Nate Powell  into amazon's top spot for a time. The slipcase set is still unavailable on Amazon but available elsewhere for around $30. It was an honor to meet Congressman Lewis at SDCC last year, this is an important book and extremely well done.

Also, it won't be published until September, but there will be a new children's book based on story notes that were found in Mark Twain's papers. “The Purloining of Prince Oleomargarine.” Love what I've seen of the illustrations so far.

Well, since your'e asking, I'm currently reading The Circle. The dangers of what the company is doing seem incredibly obvious to me, but then I admit that I'm more sensitive to that kind of thing. The heroine is naive and just downright stupid at times. Yet the portrayal of the company is what keeps me interested, wanting to know what they're doing, their ultimate goal...

That's not entirely true. The Comics Beat article points out that graphic novels are also reported on Bookscan, which compiles sales from major retailers across the country.

All great choices and quite a variety! If you like creepy things, Clean Room is genuinely so.

Weekend reading from a recent visit to Bell's Books in Palo Alto, CA. If you are a book nut and happen to be in downtown Palo Alto, it's a magical place. Would take it over Tahiti any day.

Collected Buck Rogers with a foreword by Ray Bradbury and an "autobiography." Selections of course but various complete story lines from 1929-1946, many in color.

2 Krazy & Ignatz books, complete strips from 1927-1928 and 1931-1932. I pick these up whenever I see them, wonderful stuff.

"The Best Of Eagle," selections from the British comics series from the 50-60s.

A copy of Camões's Lusiads, (the Portuguese epic poem.) This book store gets a lot of collections from Stanford and this book belonged to a former literature professor. It has a lot of notes, but they are informative, written in a beautiful script and neatly tucked away in the margins.  Nothing better for a rainy morning.

Random bonus was finding a Green Lantern mug. When it's warm a nice chunk of the corps appears, from Apros to Xax.

Great book! IMHO you can't go wrong with Neal Stephenson's books, though Cryptonomicon and the Baroque cycle take some patience  :)

I think you're right about its prescience. I read it when it came out in 92, back when the internet was just coming into its own. We didn't even have the Mozilla browser yet.

You might The Diamond Age as well, which he wrote a few years after.

I think a lot of us have books like that.  I have never been able to get through War and Peace and I spend so long between attempts that I have to start over each time. I use a different bookmark for every attempt so they are all just stuck there like javelins in a contest.

Something that I always find amusing in Stephenson's books is how the stuff he is dreaming up for the future is often easier for me to believe than some of the historical things he describes that actually happened.

I have been so impressed with Noah Hawley's work on Fargo and now Legion, thinking I might track down some of his novels and give them a try.

Gibson had some signings at SDCC 2016. In the one I went to, instead of the nice collectibles people usually bring, there were lots of old, beat up, well read copies of his books. Lots of Neuromancers.

Stephenson did a Q&A on slashdot a while back. His answer for who would win in a fight between him and Gibson is great.

I think next for me is Neuromancer.  Trying to get through some of these cyber punk books I've never read.  That or start the Hyperion series.

The Hyperion series (By Dan Simmons) is great

I was so hoping that would be published earlier so I could have bought it for my son's birthday next week. Have you read the other ThrawnZahns?

Finished Odd Thomas by Dean Koontz.  It was an interesting story...but the style or the writing distracted me...I would call it...overly verbose?  But it was a recommendation from a friend so I pushed through it.  Good an interesting story tho.

That would be an awesome gift for an apprentice, Master Jedi!

Yes, have read - and recommend - the Thrawn Trilogy and the Hand of Thrawn (long live the EU).

If you're up for it, there's 6 more books in the series, worth it IMHO if you liked the first. I'll have to go back and look at the style, I'm not really much of a Koontz fan but I liked these.  Ticktock too, kind of a horror comedy?

Seconded! My son quite liked them too. Thrawn always reminded me a bit of Father Brown somehow, and we got to meet Zahn at SDCC some years ago and I was all excited to ask him if there was a connection. He just gave me a weird look and said no and that he had based him a bit on Sherlock Holmes. (I still think I'm right.)

Been working through a pile of old, dusty books about Iceland and the sagas. Wonderful stuff but my sinuses are not happy.

Reading 'Ready Player One' for the first time, I know bad nerd.

Wow, I guess this book was written for my generation. I know almost every reference and played D&D back then. We never played "that module" , my brother (DM) wrote most of what we played.

That's awesome, Jim! Does he still play?

We did play 'that module' and I even DM'd it when we played the 'Return to 'that module' module' as adults. And the text-based computer game they reference later, I played that too....

Ah, I feel both old and young at the same time...  :-\

Oh my gosh, me!! The Martian is hands down the best book I've read in the last 5 years at least, maybe ever. I love it so much. Last year I rushed to the book store right before SDCC so I could get a physical copy for Weir to sign (since I only had it on my Kindle). He was really nice and was willing to sign and take photos last year, which was great.

Been working through Roald Dahl's short stories.

I just started reading The Chrysalids again. I haven't read it since high school. While I remember the basic plot, there's a lot I've forgotten.

That's funny, I was just talking to a coworker yesterday about The Day of the Triffids and how Trouble with Lichen is one of my all time favorite book names. Haven't read any of Wyndham's stuff in forever,  I have The Chrysalids somewhere though I think the copy I have is called Rebirth?

Speaking of Inuit country, (this is going to be a sloppy segue,) I was scouring a library sale and came across a large, beautifully bound, edition of Kipling's Jungle Stories in Italian. What little Italian I have is limited to words that might be in Dante or on a restaurant menu so I'm not really going to be able to read it but it has these gorgeous paintings as illustrations. They were mostly forest or jungle settings, so far so good, but the animals and imagery tended to South American with some surreal elements. I had to buy it when it saw this

Lousy photo, but hopefully some of the details come through. And yes, that is what I think is a Spanish conquistador, a devil, two dogs that appear to prefer Jesus to the other occupants, the last of which is Superman with an oar. This picture is smack dab in the middle of the story Quiquern, which unlike the other Jungle Stories is an Inuit tale.

Looking into it more afterwards, the paintings are works by José Gamarra, an artist originally from Uruguay, and they have nothing to do with Kipling. Someone just thought they should go together, which unless I'm reading too much into things is really interesting. (btw, I'm always reading too much into things.) Gamarra's other paintings tend to be more subtle than the one I posted but a common theme is an element, sometimes obvious but sometimes you have to look for it, that illustrates the encroachment of a foreign element into the scene. Soldiers, a helicopter, Superman in a boat. Given the criticism about Kipling's imperialism, it's a fascinating combination. And even if it's unintentional I'll still have the picture above, where 2 of the passengers on the boat can fly and another can walk on water.

I love old books, and I know what you mean, especially when you find ones that are inscribed or have old notes or pressed flowers or other things. I also take a juvenile sort of pleasure when I find a book that still has some of the pages uncut and I know from that point on nobody else has read those exact pages. Also funny how the older books often have fewer typos than newer editions.

Reading The Devil's Teeth by Susan Casey. Nonfiction, about all the big great white sharks that live around the Farallon Islands, which are just off the coast from where I live. Kind of mind-blowing.

For sci fi fans (which... I'm guess is a lot of you  ;) ), I want to recommend Michael C. Grumley's Breakthrough series. So far there are 4, with a fifth in progress. They are quick reads and action-packed. The main plot in the first one is that scientists build a computer program that allows them to talk to dolphins. The government then uses the program to investigate some disturbances at the bottom of the ocean.

I randomly borrowed the first of the series from the Kindle Owners Lending Library last year, and I was finally able to get my hands on the fourth one, so I'm all caught up. I believe all of them are available on Kindle Unlimited. Only the first one is available on Prime Reading, but they are all still available for lending through the Lending Library (which is unfortunately one-book-per-calendar-month).

I'm not scientifically minded, so I don't know how accurate the science is in these, but the books present (to me, anyway) as hard science fiction.

Anyway, I think they're fun books, so I wanted to let people know about them.

My son just got his summer reading list for school and that's one of the options. My daughter's reading list (she's going into 9th grade) was surprisingly sci fi heavy, with I am Legend, Never Let Me Go, Ready Player One, some Bradbury stories, etc.

It's Bloomsday today so all Ulysses for me tonight. Maybe I'll attempt a page of Finnegan's Wake if I feel up to it.

Well, I have to say that Breakthrough is definitely not on the same level as The Martian (but what is?). It's much lighter on the scientific specifics. But definitely good for people with little patience! Without spoiling too much, there are some "not of this world" parts. So that might be a turn off for some people.

The Batman Elmer Fudd comic that is out today is really, really good. (So good I didn't type "weally, weally good" in the last sentence.)

Here's one review

To buy it looks like it's sold out on most of the online places, I see the variant still available at bada$$

http://www.badasscollectibles.com/DC_Comics_Batman_Elmer_Fudd_Special_1_VAR_ED_Variant_Edition/p2539005_17262632.aspx (http://www.badasscollectibles.com/DC_Comics_Batman_Elmer_Fudd_Special_1_VAR_ED_Variant_Edition/p2539005_17262632.aspx)

I'm sure it's available digitally at the usual places but I'm still a paper person. Overall, these crossovers have been really good. Last week's Wonder Woman / Tasmanian Devil was great. There's a collection out next February.

At least the series fleshed out more of the background, and will continue the story next season...

I got a ton of ARCs at BookCon this year (mostly YA, the YA fan base is huge at BookCon), and I have yet to read any of them. :)

I just finished reading The Leavers by Lisa Ko, which I really liked. I've been reading a lot more books on my phone now that I figured out how to get ebooks from my library...

In preparation for his forthcoming third installment of Brandon Sanderson's Stormlight Archive entitled Oathbringer, I have reread everything that I know of Sanderson's writing for the second time. I was convinced the guy in the drive through at McDonald's was Hoyd. Now, to settle myself down before the Con, I've gone back home. Right about now Goldberry is going to sing our young hobbits to sleep, along with yours truly.

My small town library just got ebook access a few months ago so I finally got a library card!! I didn't get one before because they were pretty much only open during the hours I was at work. But now, I have read so many books already! I just read Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood since I loved the Handmaid's Tale and now I'm on to the "sequel" The Year of The Flood.  Oryx and Crake was really good-another dystopian novel but it's hard to describe without giving out spoilers. The Year of the Flood is more like a companion as it takes place around the same time but with different characters.  I'm having a hard time getting hooked but I'm only 25% through it.  I know the third book in this series goes back to Oryx and Crake (or I think at least) so I'm going to push through as I want to know what happens with those guys.  If you liked The Handmaid's Tale I would recommend Oryx and Crake. It is written more like a novel, it doesn't have the grammar "issues" like Handmaid, but does share the dystopia themes and social issues.

I just downloaded Alias Grace by Margaret Atwood - beach reading for next week, can't wait!  I'll add the others you recommend, as well.

An aside, we have a summer cottage on the Rideau and I read my way through the small town library when I was a teen.  Good memory!

The other night I arrange my BookExpo/BookCon haul (https://twitter.com/jamiesugah/status/871854058633560064) by release date (this is the original picture so they aren't in order), but right now I'm reading Slaves of the Switchboard of Doom which is a very cool sort of retro sci-fi book where the author did his own illustrations. It's neat. But I'm not very far into it so I can't yet say whether or not it's good.

Had to share this. We leave for San Diego tomorrow so buying books is the last thing I needed to be doing today, but I needed a haircut and the barber is by a thrift shop, and I cannot resist a thrift shop.

And I found this, an autographed first print of Gaiman's Graveyard Book  ;D

Would love to see an animated version of the Graveyard Book, thought the graphic adaptation was well done too.

This is shaping up to be a very strange week. Just found something even more interesting while walking the dog, will save that story for the meetup today since it poses something of an ethical dilemma best discussed over "sodas."

If anyone is looking for a quick but meaningful read, check out "The Hate U Give".  It is a young adult book and is EXCELLENT.

"Sixteen-year-old Starr lives in two worlds: the poor neighbourhood where she was born and raised and her posh high school in the suburbs. The uneasy balance between them is shattered when Starr is the only witness to the fatal shooting of her unarmed best friend, Khalil, by a police officer. Now what Starr says could destroy her community. It could also get her killed. Inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement, this is a powerful and gripping YA novel about one girl's struggle for justice."

I finally got to Artemis (my TBR pile is huge) and I am really enjoying it! The story is not at all like The Martian, but given that it takes place on the moon, the scientific accuracy is there.

My cubicle neighbor at work has still not forgiven me for failing to get the Artemis ARC at SDCC.

Couldn't sleep much during our recent heat wave so made a sizeable dent in one of the to-be-read piles at least, one nice find was "Chuck Amok," an autobiography by the legendary Chuck Jones. Lots of great stuff in it, like the strict list of rules that every roadrunner cartoon had to follow.

Also, too late for me alas, but http://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/the-read-down/40-books-to-read-before-youre-40/ (http://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/the-read-down/40-books-to-read-before-youre-40/). I would be at 20/40 but I can never seem to finish War and Peace, so 19.7/40 I guess.

I'm also getting through some of the ARCs I got at sdcc:

Otherworld by Jason Segal and Kirsten Miller
Really enjoyed this one! It was similar to Ready Player One and the Eye of Minds books in that it is a virtual reality based story, but different enough that I was happy with it.  Without giving to much away, there is a different "bad guy" and the way the virtual reality works is different.  I liked the different areas he had to go through, the characters were neat, plot moved quickly.  If you liked Ready Player One I would recommend it.

Also, thank you random person that was at the booth the same time as me and asked for it.  I had no idea the giveaway was happening, so I just copied him and said I was also there for Otherworld and she handed me the book as well as some sunglasses.  Nobody needs to know I didn't know what the book was and was in the right place at the right time. Ha.

Bonfire by Krysten Ritter
Another good one, albeit simple.  Kinda a murder-mystery plot, kinda an investigative journalist plot.  An environmental lawyer goes back to her hometown to essentially solve a murder but there is a bigger conspiracy afoot! gasp! lol.  It wasn't super unique, I could tell what would happen early on, but that's not to say I didn't enjoy it.  I couldn't put it down, I wanted to keep reading to see if I was right/find out what would happen to a few characters.  A solid quick read-beach read? Is that what I'm going for? Good first book by Krysten.

Artemis-I think I've talked about it on here already but I'll say again I really really really liked it.  Haven't read The Martian so don't know how it compares but I lovvved Artemis.

Second Hand Souls by Christopher Moore (sequel to A Dirty Job). Honestly, can't say I'm in love with the story. I read the first book expecting things to get more exciting, but they never really did. So I kinda felt I had to read the follow up just to see if the story gets any better. So far, meh.

Also been nibbling on the The Game is Life series by Terry Schott. It has a Ready Player One/Matrix feel to it.

Quote
In 2014, Comic-Con International embarked on an ambitious program to create graphic novel book clubs in the San Diego Public Library system. Two of the clubs started that year (Downtown and Mission Valley), and two more were added in 2015 (La Jolla and North Park). Earlier this year, a fifth club was added at the Encinitas Public Library, part of the San Diego County Library system, and we’re happy to announce the addition of a sixth official Comic-Con International Graphic Novel Book Club at the Escondido Public Library, beginning in October!

We are currently accepting membership applications for this new group, which will be meeting once a month at the Escondido Public Library, 239 S. Kalmia St., Escondido, CA 92025. You must fill out a membership application to be considered for this new club. You can download the official membership application by clicking here, but please keep in mind the following guidelines:

Members must be 18 years of age or older
Members must have a Comic-Con Member ID
Members are responsible for obtaining their own books for each monthly meeting, either in print or digital versions or borrowed from a local library
Please submit the application form to us at [email protected] by Monday, October 1 for consideration for membership in the club. Membership is limited to 20 people. If accepted, you will receive a confirmation email from us with details on the first meeting.

Want to see what we’ve been reading? During the first 3 years (2014—2016), the Graphic Novel Book Clubs have read over 75 books! Click here to download our complete Reading List, which lists all the books the various clubs have read over that time period.

Ash signing tonight (bold = mine), from: http://www.kpbs.org/news/2017/oct/26/bruce-campbell-signing-mysterious-galaxy-bookstore/

Quote
Bruce Campbell, a Comic-Con favorite for his role as Ash in the "Evil Dead" movies and Starz show, will be at Mysterious Galaxy Bookstore 7 p.m., Thursday to sign his new book, "Hail to the Chin."

As Ash, Bruce Campbell has been fighting off deadites for decades with a chainsaw hand and a smart-alecky attitude. At conventions he comes across as the coolest of the cool cult heroes paying reverence to no one and to nothing.

So it may come as a bit of a surprise to discover in his first book "If Chins Could Kill" and his latest book "Hail to the Chin," that what may define him most is that he's a hard working actor with an old school sense of professionalism and respect for the craft even if you are working in B movies.

"But there is that ridiculous, inescapable difference between the persona and the actual person and hopefully if anything that’s what books can do is round out that image a little bit," Campbell said. "I just like wearing dumb outfits and going to conventions and this stuff gives me the excuse to do that. For some reason I do pretend like I don’t take any of it seriously and there’s a lot of it that I don’t take seriously but I actually do take the craft seriously. Like being a good bricklayer. I think you should take pride if you are a craftsman, you should take pride in being a good craftsman so I guess I do take that seriously. There is always going to be a difference between the onscreen schmo and the guy who runs around on his property."

It's been 15 years since his first book and Campbell decided that enough had happened in his life to merit a second one.

"The industry has changed a lot," Campbell said. "The B movies that I have championed for a long time seem to be very prevalent now in that all the A movies are B movies. If you are bitten by a radioactive spider that’s a 1950s B movie. So I feel vindicated now. Hollywood has just caught up with my visionary thinking."

Campbell’s books contain entertaining anecdotes as well as with insights into how the industry works.

For all of you "Ash Vs. Evil Dead" fans, this book will have to satisfy your need for a Campbell fix because the premiere of the show's third season has been postponed from this month to February.

It's spooky time! Currently "warming up" by reading Roald Dahl or M.R. James short stories before bed. Then was planning some Norden books, (granted the last one is a bit of a stretch.)

I Remember You, Yrsa Sigurđardóttir
Let the Right One In, John Ajvide Lindqvist
The Explorer and Other Stories, Jyrki Vainonen
Horrorstör, Grady Hendrix

Not sure where to go after that, have had House of Leaves on the shelves for a while.

In 2014, Comic-Con International embarked on an ambitious program to create graphic novel book clubs in the San Diego area. Two of the clubs started that year (Downtown and Mission Valley), and two more were added in 2015 (La Jolla and North Park), all four part of the San Diego Public Library system. In 2017 we added a fifth club at the Encinitas Public Library, part of the San Diego County Library system, and a sixth club at the Escondido Public Library. Now we start off 2018 with a bang, adding a new club in Balboa Park at the site of the future Comic-Con Center for Popular Culture, the former Hall of Champions building!

We are currently accepting membership applications for this new group, which will be meeting once a month at the Balboa Park location. You must fill out a membership application to be considered for this new club. You can download the official interest form by clicking here, but please keep in mind the following:

Members must be 18 years of age or older
Members must have a Comic-Con Member ID
Members are responsible for obtaining their own books for each monthly meeting, either in print or digital versions or borrowed from a local library
Members should live in the greater San Diego area
Please submit the application form to us at [email protected] by Wednesday, January 31 for consideration of membership in the club. Membership is limited to 20 people. If accepted, you will receive a confirmation email from us with details of the first meeting.

Want to see what we’ve been reading? During the first 3 years (2014—2016), the Graphic Novel Book Clubs have read over 75 books! Click here to download our complete Reading List, which lists all the books the various clubs have read over that time period.

Comic-Con International: San Diego is a nonprofit educational corporation dedicated to creating awareness of, and appreciation for, comics and related popular artforms, primarily through the presentation of conventions and events that celebrate the historic and ongoing contribution of comics to art and culture.

Hey I just finished listening to "A Gift of Time" by Jerry Merritt

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/32622432-a-gift-of-time

"When Micajah Fenton discovers a crater in his front yard with a broken time glider in the bottom and a naked, virtual woman on his lawn, he delays his plans to kill himself. While helping repair the marooned time traveler’s glider, Cager realizes it can return him to his past to correct a mistake that had haunted him his entire life. As payment for his help, the virtual creature living in the circuitry of the marooned glider, sends Cager back in time as his ten-year-old self, knowing everything he’d known at eighty and gives him access to advanced equations of space and time.
But living life over knowing the future isn’t as easy as Cager has anticipated. His every action alters the future he remembers until much of what he remembers never happened at all. And those changes work against him at every turn, preventing him correcting the most serious mistake of his life. Now he must use his advanced mathematical ability to build his own time machine to go back and try again. But he needs a fortune even to begin.
Then he receives help from a strange, young woman with no history. While perfecting time travel, Cager and his new partner overcome enormous problems, even being hunted by dinosaurs in the Cretaceous. After that, though, things get really bizarre."

I really enjoyed this book. It's probably the best time travel book I have ever read.

It has the best technical explanation of time travel I have ever read. I mean most time travel books , TV shows and movies gloss over the technical details. They never take into account the movement of the earth around the sun , the sun around the galaxy ... etc.

The story is also a murder mystery , and has a serial killer .

Split Second by Douglas Richards is another time travel book that takes planetary movement into account. I recommend it, although the time travel isn't the primary focus.

I just started reading The Terror by Dan Stephens, which is being adapted for TV and will air on AMC. Has anyone read it? It's really long, and slow to start, I'm about 15% in and things are just starting to get interesting.

Was thinking about starting The Terror on tv, [member=4072]angoradebs[/member] what did you think of the book and have you watched the series? Always curious what people recommend about reading versus watching it first.

Saw this at a bookstore but didn't pick it up. Glanced inside and yep, the title is spot on.

Found this at the library, normally I don't like crossover stories like this but the main story here is alright.

You get Bernie Wrightson art in a story that ends with a Batman versus crocodile-based xenomorph battle on a stone floor that covers a lava pit and is gradually being eaten away by the alien's acid. Someone's been reading my dream journal.

Earlier posts mentioned time travel. David Gerrold was at SVCC and I was able to pick up a perfect 1st printing of The Man who Folded Himself. Haven't read it since I was a kid.

Re: The book. Overall, I enjoyed it and would recommend it. It does start slow, but once it picks up, it's paced really well. The first few chapters kind of jump back and forth in time and can get confusing if you don't make note of the dates at the beginning of the chapter, but partway through the book it becomes a linear story.

The actual "terror" and the mystery surrounding it were a little weirder than I anticipated, and I'm not sure I loved the resolution of that part of the story. I did really love other parts of the book, specifically the depictions of the ships' crews simply trying to survive the elements. The characters exemplified the best and worst of human nature.

I have been watching the show, although I haven't seen the most recent episode. It's very well acted and well made. I thought the first episode was gripping. The rest haven't quite been as good, but based on my preference for the latter half of the novel, I'm confident that the show will get better as it progresses. There have definitely been some changes, most notably to the main female character, Lady Silence, and the protagonist Captain Crozier. So far I haven't considered those changes anything particularly egregious, but it does make me wonder how they will handle some later plot points (or if they'll forgo them entirely).

I personally would read the book first before watching the show. Or maybe watch the first episode, and if it strikes your fancy, read the book before continuing. Since the novel takes a bit to get into, it might help to have an episode under your belt so you know a bit about what you're getting into.

I finally started The Martian the other day. One of my alumni groups does a semi-monthly book club called Page & Popcorn, where we pick a book that was made into a movie, read the book, and get together to watch the movie and eat. Last month it was A Wrinkle in Time.

Last week I read Ship It, which I was really excited about, but was highly disappointed in. It's a YA LGBT+ romance that revolves heavily around fandom and con culture, and I did not like the way fans came across in it. The main character was way too entitled and her behavior crossed the line many times, but she kept being rewarded for it.

Also if any of you read manga, you should read Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku. The English translation came out on Tuesday and it's adorable.

I binge on those every now and then but I soured on them for a while after Brimstone. I adore Wilkie Collins and when they lifted Count Fusco for their book it pretty much ruined it for me. I'm over it now though. And I just remembered that there is  Woman in White adapation that starts this Sunday.

What a great reading group idea!

One series I have never read is Discworld. I tried a few times but my brain just wasn't in the right space. Thinking I might finally give it a go this summer, knowing it'll probably end up dominating my life for a few months.

[member=4270]mark[/member] One of the best things about Discworld is that it's really episodic. I've always felt able to dip in and out as I pleased, even if that meant I sometimes ended up reading books that "happened" before other books after those other books. Some subsets of the world (the Watch, the Witches, etc) do have mini-arcs, but they're still not "series" in the sense that each book is building to a shared story or conclusion. Rather, each book mostly stands alone, and the only real reason to read the arcs in order is to watch the characters develop.

Ok, this is just plain mean. Saw an email announcing a new book from George R. R. Martin and it's a PREQUEL to ASOIAF.

Actually, am looking forward to it and GRRM has a charming entry about it on his notablog http://georgerrmartin.com/notablog/2018/04/25/fire-blood-on-the-way/ (http://georgerrmartin.com/notablog/2018/04/25/fire-blood-on-the-way/) Drops November 20th.

Thanks! I have a tendency to binge but maybe I'll be able to break it up. I also came across a copy of The Compleat Ankh-Morpork, although I can't currently figure out where I put it.

Somehow that seems completely appropriate for that particular book. It's probably made its way to the Unseen University library...

Nice!

I just started Reflection. It's part of Disney's Twisted Tale series, where they take one of their movies and put a new twist on it. The first one (Aladdin) was not that great. The second one (Sleeping Beauty) was better. I haven't read the third one yet (Beauty and the Beast) because I gave my copy to a friend for Christmas. Reflection is the fourth one - it's a twist on Mulan. Basically, Shang saves Mulan from Shan Yu's blade on the mountain and dies, and Mulan travels to the Underworld to save him. I'm not far into it yet but I like it so far.

Just started Doctor Sleep. Been watching Castle Rock so was in the mood for some Stephen King.  Earlier I went through all 5 volumes of the Lucifer comic, I had only read the first volume before. The first volume was still my favorite but still quite strong for a 700+ page comics story.

I just finished Waking Gods -- book 2 of The Themis Files by Sylvain Neuvel. His first book -- Sleeping Giants -- was his debut novel, and it had me hooked almost right from the beginning. I love his approach to narrating, where each chapter is a "file", either a voice recording of a conversation (one of the main characters has a habit of recording all his conversations), a personal log, a newspaper clipping, or a transcript of a news broadcast. Basic premise is that they find pieces of a giant robot buried all over Earth, and the journey of figuring out who built it and why and the consequences of piecing the robot back together.

The books are quick reads. If you're dedicated, you could finish the book in a day. Maybe even two books if you're a fast reader. Book 3 (I think the last book) -- Only Human -- just came out on hardcover, but I'll wait for the paperback before finishing it off.

Finally finished The Passage! Very long but very good. The last page really took my breath away because it was very unexpected.

Considering what happens about a third into the book, I'm very curious as to how they plan to adapt this for TV, and if they are going to completely change what happens.

I definitely want to read the rest of the trilogy, but next up for me is the new Cormoran Strike novel, Lethal White

Open enrollment:

https://www.comic-con.org/toucan/graphic-novel-book-clubs-open-enrollment-2019

Quote
Comic-Con has been hosting seven Graphic Novel Book Clubs over the past five years, mainly in libraries around the San Diego County area (plus one at the future site of the Comic-Con Museum in Balboa Park). We’re going to be adding two new groups in early 2019—one in North County and one in South Bay—but in the meantime five of our existing clubs have some membership slots open. You don’t have to be a veteran comics reader to join … many of our members were curious about comics and took the plunge and now are graphic novel fans!

Applying for membership is easy … just download this form, fill it out and send it to [email protected]. Please check whichever locations interest you; while, as a newcomer, you can join only one group, we’ll let you know which ones still have availability and help you find the one that matches your schedule and location. New memberships will begin in January 2019. The deadline to apply is Friday, Dec. 14, 2018.

The clubs meet in the evening once a month (some clubs skip July) and gather together for a giant potluck Holiday Party in December, where everyone reads the same book. Members must be 18 years of age or older, have a Comic-Con Member ID, and—obviously!—live in San Diego County to attend the meetings. Meetings last about 90 minutes; members are responsible for obtaining their own copies of the selected books, either via local comics shop, online, digitally, or from their local libraries. The members of each group decide what the group will read by pitching and voting on graphic novels.

There are five groups accepting members starting in January 2019. Wondering which club is best for you? Here’s some additional info:

Downtown meets the first Tuesday of every month at 6:00 PM
Encinitas meets the first Thursday of every month at 6:30 PM
La Jolla meets the second Tuesday of every month at 6:00 PM
Mission Valley meets the first Wednesday of every month 6:00 PM
North Park meets the first Wednesday of every month at 6:30 PM

While there are openings in each of the five above-mentioned groups, memberships are extremely limited (no more than 20 people per group). This open enrollment period for existing groups ends on Friday, Dec. 14, so if you’re interested, get that form to us ASAP to be considered. The Comic-Con Graphic Novel Book Clubs offer a fun way to meet new like-minded comics fans and to discuss some of your favorite books … and you’ll definitely find some new faves (and make some new friends), too!

TWO NEW BOOK CLUBS IN SAN DIEGO COUNTY! Comic-Con Adds Two More Graphic Novel Book Clubs!

Comic-Con has been sponsoring seven graphic novel book clubs over the past few years, mainly in San Diego libraries (plus one at the future site of the Comic-Con Museum in Balboa Park), and we’re happy to announce that we’re adding two new groups to start off 2019, a new one in Chula Vista and a second club in Escondido!

You can join only one of these clubs, so pick the one that works best for you, location-wise.

Applying for membership is easy … just download this form and return it to us at [email protected] by Thursday, January 31. Please check whichever location interests you. Membership slots in both clubs are extremely limited. In order to have a fun and enjoyable discussion group, each Comic-Con Graphic Novel Book Club is limited to around 20 members.

This year marks the beginning of the sixth year for our flagship groups, Downtown and Mission Valley. North Park and La Jolla joined us in 2015, Encinitas and our first club in Escondido in 2017, and Balboa Park in 2018!

Wondering which club is best for you? Here’s some additional info:

Chula Vista will meet the second Tuesday of every month at 6:30 PM
Escondido will meet the first Wednesday of every month at 6:30 PM

Download the form for more information. https://www.comic-con.org/sites/default/files/forms/CCIBookClub_2019_CV-Esc2_InterestForm_IA.pdf

The Comic-Con Graphic Novel Book Clubs offer a fun way to meet new, like-minded comics fans and to discuss some of your favorite books. You’ll definitely find some new faves (and make some new friends), too!

Just finished reading Ready Player One. After watching the movie, the book is waaaaaaay better. I had no idea how different each medium was, but I understand why the changes had to be made to appeal to a more massive audience.

There are visual aspects as well. Playing a video game (especially a text game) isn't really that exciting to watch on a movie screen.

I've been casually reading "The Soprano Sessions," written by two very prominent TV critics (one of which is my favorite in the business, Alan Sepinwall, formerly of HitFix and currently with Rolling Stone).  It deconstructs each episode, has some great interviews w/David Chase, etc.  I just re-watched the series from Thanksgiving Break-early Feb. so all these eps are fresh in my mind.  I consider myself a big of an intellectual type, and the nitty-gritty this book gets into as far as themes and symbolism and whatnot of episodes is really fascinating: some of which I totally missed, even after watching "The Sopranos" series probably 4 or 5 times in full.  Great book if your a fan of the most influential TV series of my lifetime, and IMO the 2nd most influential TV series in history behind only "I Love Lucy."

Yep.  The best type of art is that which evokes strong emotions.  I was reading "Lovely Bones" at the same time one of my students was raped & murdered (like, that incident happened when I was only about a quarter of the way the "Lovely Bones") and the rest of the time reading that book I was mostly bawling.  Some of the book is a little goofy, but the fundamentals real hit home.  I can't imagine I could read that book ever again, and I've never attempted the movie.  After reading that, I read "Vengeance," the true story of the Israeli Mossad hit-squad who went after the Palestinian Liberation Organization terrorists who murdered the Israeli athletes and coaches at the Munich Olympics in 1972 (Spielberg made a movie about called MUNICH).  Where I was at at the time, the book of vengeance, hunting down and murdering terrorists, was very therapeutic, especially after "Lovely Bones."  And I have to say after the opening description of the terrorist acts I didn't shed one freaking tear reading "Vengeance"

We do a lot of reading at our house, and we read aloud to our children until they became teenagers who then read aloud to us. There were a lot of tears. We all cried together when Kili and Fili died, and don't even get me started about the waterworks that took place reading Bridge to Terabithia! Mom and Dad's tear stains were in our copies of LOTR when they picked it up for themselves. So, the answer is yes, eyes got watery to say the least.

I teared up when Dumbledore died and was shocked at how close I had become to the characters JK Rowling had created.

Currently, I am reading an X-Files book entitled, Devil’s Advocate.  It follows a young Scully who is more open minded and falls prey to a fallen angel.  Yeah ... it’s a young adult book and I curious what the writer is trying to do with one of my favorite fictitious characters.

As for comics, I am reading Murder Falcon.  It’s about a guitar player who summons a chicken god with heavy metal.  It’s crazy fun.  Excellent art and story.  I highly recommend it.  Trade should be out later this year.

I just finished this book over the weekend and it publishes today so I can recommend it to everyone. THERE WILL COME A DARKNESS by Katy Rose Pool. It is PHENOMENAL. It's a dark fantasy with like a magic-based faith system and a prophecy about the end of the world. Diverse cast, LGBT characters, top 10 anime betrayals. It's great. It's the first in a trilogy.

I just finished The Chestnut Man by Soren Sveistrup.  Picked up the arc (of the English translation) at SDCC but it's out as of today.  It was AMAZING.  It is about two detectives that are trying to solve the murders of three women by The Chestnut Man, which they don't know are related until later on. I'm going to say that's not so much a spoiler since it's the title of the book and all.  There is also a kidnapping or two that are maybe, maybe not related.  A few places described the book as horror, but I would categorize it more as a combo murder mystery/thriller, it's not scary like Steven King can be or anything like that.  I read a lot of books in this category and it blows most of them out of the park.

A few weeks ago I also read The Warehouse by Rob Hart (another arc pick up) and it was really good too.  It was about what happens when a copy *cough* Amazon *cough* essentially takes over everything.  They have drones for delivery, a company campus where everyone works and lives, they've bought out all other businesses or essentially caused them to fail.  The story is about a woman that infiltrates the campus and then just a normal dude that needed a job that gets caught up in her plan inadvertently.

Long overdue, but I've been listening to Leonard Nimoy's I Am Spock autobiography when I'm commuting or doing some repetitive tasks at my internships.  I hadn't had the chance to read his book back then, so I decided to why not listen to him narrate it instead of just reading it!  XD  I normally don't really do audio books (I'm more of a visual learner), but I figured every once in a while it would be cool, especially if it's read by the author, ha ha.

Just started reading Gardens of the Moon, Book One of the Malazan Book of the Fallen, by Steven Erikson.  Very deep, very involved, epic fantasy in the realm of GRRM, or even Tolkien at times.  Very detailed, lots of characters, stories in stories, and a very intense read.  First book of a 10-book series, so it'll keep me occupied for a while.

I just finished reading, The Wildered Quest.  It's fantastic mixture of fantasy/Arthurian legend and Grimm's Fairy tales and I definitely recommend it.  It's the book for the newest expansion set for Magic: the Gathering but don't let that throw you off.  It follows the journey of twin Rowan and Will Kenrith, who venture on a quest to find their missing father, The High King.

Here is an excellent review.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d4Zm4JzNiVs

Hi... been a long time since I've posted here... but never stopped reading!

I recently finished an awesome speculative fiction novel: A SONG FOR A NEW DAY by Sarah Pinsker. In the future, due to mass attacks and mass illness, groups of almost any size are banned, and all live music is performed hologram style, beamed into people's hoodie visors. But what about the musicians who crave a live audience?

Really good, highly recommended!

I'm actually simultaneously reading and listening to the audio book of As You Wish (sometimes at the same time but not always since the audio book version is on my phone and thus more mobile).  XD So far, I think it's more awesome to hear Cary Elwes read his book to you than to read it on your own.  *swoons*  He still sounds the same, so it's like Westley is really talking to you!  *laughs*  Plus, the audio book version includes his fellow cast members and movie director contributing their own comments, so it's more like listening to a behind-the-scenes movie documentary than an audio book, ha ha.

I'm enjoying the book so far though, and if you're a fan of The Princess Bride novel and the movie, I think you'll appreciate Elwes's movie memoir.

I just finished "I Heard You Paint Houses," the book that Martin Scorsese's latest film is based off of.  The book chronicles the events of Irish Teamsters official/mob muscle Frank Sheeran: one of the lead suspects in the murder of Teamster President Jimmy Hoffa.  The books mostly chronicles Sheeran's involvement with Jimmy Hoffa (they were close friends and business associates), the mob, and how to two often intersected.  Sheeran has admitted to committing dozens of murders for the mob, and is the main suspect in the FBI investigation into the Hoffa disappearance: a wise thing, since Sheeran admitted he murdered Hoffa while nearing death about 15 yeas ago in the early 00's.  The book talks a bit of Sheeran's background, particularly his Army service in WW2 where he liberated a Concentration Camp (Dachau), spent over 400 days in combat (roughly 4x that of the average WW2 veteran), and committed several war crimes (mostly murder of Nazi captives).  Sheeran was one of only two non-Italians who was convicted for crimes related to Cosa Nostra, otherwise known as the Mafia.

While the book goes into detail on Hoffa's murder, it doesn't dwell on too much gore or violence.  There are some key mob assassinations talked about (with nearly 100 pages in the back of corroborating 'testimony' from eyewitnesses and other evidence) though.  The book came about when Sheeran decided to come clean about his involvement w/Hoffa's death, where he confessed to both the book author as well as his attorney.

I'm a fan of real life mob stories, and any mob story good enough to pique Martin Scorsese's interest gets my attention.  I can see why he made the film, as it feels like it could be the capper to his career of mob movies; going back to his first integral film, MEAN STREETS, Scorsese has been fascinated with the stories of the Italians and Italian-Americans he grew up around in Little Italy.  This is one of the few films where the main mobster character lasts until old age; Scorsese is 76 while Sheeran dies at age 83.  The book reads like an old man reflecting on the sins of his life, just as Scorsese could be reflecting on the sins of his most popular characters.

I mostly read this book in five days because I was bitter THE IRISHMAN was opening in San Diego & I don't have time to drive up to LA anytime soon just to see a movie.  This was an incredibly quick read, and the details of the inner-workings of Hoffa and the Teamsters union (as well as its entanglement with the Mafia) were entertaining and fascinating to me.  Hoffa disappeared a year before I was born, so most of what I've known about the man was mythologized.  My grandpa was a Teamster post-WW2 in the midwest (an honest one: like, about as close to a saint as almost any man I've ever known) and had nothing but the utmost respect for Jimmy Hoffa and what Hoffa did for working Americans. I of course saw the Jack Nicholson HOFFA film, which played Hoffa as a gangster-type; that might've only been the outside veneer of the man, if "...Houses" is any indication (though Hoffa was indeed brash and loud at times, and did indeed run with the Mafia).

Oh, and about that title:
"I heard you paint houses" was the first sentence that Jimmy Hoffa spoke to Frank Sheeran over the phone.  It's a sort-of code for "I hear you're a contract killer," with the symbolism being "painting houses" = the blood splashing on walls or floors.  Frank answered, "I also do my own carpentry," meaning Frank also disposed of the body himself.  While the book is fascinating, there are conflicting reports out there that much of the book is a lie.  One could choose to remember that the Mafia isn't a fan of anyone airing their dirty laundry, let alone a former associate (who spills the beans on crime family bosses/heads, as well as other high-up Mafia made men).  Or you could read it as an entertaining story that embellishes much of the details but at least gets parts on the public record correct and/or backed-up by witness accounts.  Obviously a very small handful of people know exactly what happened to Jimmy Hoffa.  Sheeran says he was lured into a car for a meeting with a mafia boss, was taken to a house, shot multiple times in the back of the head, and then cremated - there is much physical evidence at the murder location to corroborate a murder took place, and Hoffa hair samples found in the backseat of the car, but nothing that conclusively proves Frank's account of Hoffa's death.

Great read, especially for those of you like me who can't wait to see Scorsese's latest masterpiece (coming to Netflix Thanksgiving, if all else fails)

If you like the book then you'll love the film.

It was compelling... I tore through it in two days! But as I read it I was just wondering how the author allowed herself to get scammed like that. I mean, she put a hotel bill for $30,000 on her American Express card for this scammer - a person she had only known about a year. I'm not blaming the victim here, just mind-boggled that the author could be under the spell of the lush life so deep that all reason left her and she would just pick up the tab for this scammer.

I Just finished reading "I Am Legend," the Richard Matheson novel from the mid-1950's.  If you only know the story from the (pretty terrible) Will Smith adaptation, you don't _really_ know the story of the novel.  Matheson does a great job of chillingly getting into the mind of the (probably) last human being alive, from a seeming pandemic that has either killed everyone else or turned them into seeming vampires.  There are essentially three 'stages' of the novel, with the first being the main character's isolation, going through the day-to-day that is waking up, doing 'chores' (sharpening dowel rods to be steaks to kill vampires; repairing any outside damage to his house caused by a crowd of vampires that congregate on his front lawn every night to taunt him; etc), and then settling in for the evening with music and whisky.  Needless to say, this is fairly relatable (minus the nightly boozing).

The 2nd stage the main character, Neville, becomes accustomed to his new 'normal,' and begins to study about germs, bacteria, etc. to try to find cause of the 'plague'-like disease + possibly a cure.  This phase we're also learning about his backstory, life before the vampire plague, etc.  I don't think Matheson gets into heavy detail about what explicitly causes the plague (something widely copied by the zombie genre, beginning about 15 years after the publication of this w/Romero's NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD), though there are hints about what might be the cause.

The 3rd stage has a bit of a time jump, with Neville essentially bulked up & normalized to his situation.  And of course, the book takes a 'Third Act' turn that solidifies a nice thematic and narrative twist while also 'explaining' what the title of the book signifies.

It's maybe not the best type of book to read right now, given current event, but the pseudo hokeyness of the vampires makes it feel far less grounded than it could have with a more broad disease effect.  Some aspects feel chilling: like a "what could happen" or a "what might have happened" given the coronapocalpyse we're all living through.  But for me the strength is in the character study of Neville: seeing him deal with his new normal makes me feel more at peace about our world.  I mean, he's pretty calm and collective dealing with freaking vampires, so I can be calm dealing with "just" a pandemic.  When Neville has his dark days & evenings of frustration or depression, it's a reminder that my own feelings are 100% legit and I'm not the only one dealing with the crazy emotional rollercoaster.

1) if you're put off due to the Smith film, give this a chance.  Conversely, if you loved the Smith film know this is very different in many ways (the Vincent Price adaptation, THE LAST MAN ON EARTH, is probably the closest adaptation as it was at least partially written by the original author; however, rewrites strayed from the source material enough that Matheson refused to put his name on it and is credited w/a pseudonym)
2) there's a pretty great graphic novel adaptation of the novel that I highly recommend.  It's black & white and not too graphic for the most part, and does a great job 'condensing' Matheson's descriptive writing.

Writer Richard Matheson was a great sci-fi writer.  He wrote the famous "Terror at 20,000 Feet" Twilight Zone episode (along with maybe a few dozen others), as well as the short-story that was Steven Spielberg's feature-length directorial debut, the TV movie DUEL (Matheson also adapted his own short story for Spielberg's script).  He's a great writer, who IMO pretty expertly mixes sci-fi jargon/mumbo-jumbo with an every-man aesthetic: meaning, especially in "I Am Legend," he doesn't bog down in science too much while painting vivid portraits of characters).

While I was sick I at least caught up on some reading.  As a musician/music teacher I always like reading music books, and I read a couple of Beatles books in the last two weeks:

* "Love Me Do!" by Michael Braun - an incredibly quick read.  Braun accompanied The Beatles on the England national tour 1963-1964 as well as their Ed Sullivan debut, Carnegie Hall Performance, and Washington DC American gigs, as well as a performance in Paris.  It happens right when the Beatles are on the cusp of breaking huge, sort of the beginning of Beatlemania, and reads mostly like Braun is a 'fly-on-the-wall' observing the group's interactions with each other, performances, and other important people.  I think I read this one in about 24 hours, being maybe 200 pages long.  It's a good look into how The Beatles initially dealt with their mammoth fame, and to be honest: they were incredibly ornery lads who seemed to have a balance of either 'getting into shenanigans of some sort' or 'exhausted from performing multiple times a night + doing press/fan stuff.'  I was a touring musician for awhile in college one summer (in a band that opened for Alice in Chains for a stretch, among others), so seeing the behind-the-scenes stuff was fascinating & I could relate.  John Lennon said, "A true book. He wrote how we were, which was bastards."  I think that's a bit of an overstatement, but they definitely come across as rowdy youngins more often than not.

* "Here, There, and Everywhere" by Geoffrey Emerich - Geoff started working at EMI Studios (later renamed Abbey Road Studios) when he was 15, and during his first 2 weeks on the job he assisted The Beatles recording their first album.  Thus began a career where he was engineering some of the greatest pop rock albums in the history of the medium before he was old enough to drink in the US ("Revolver" & "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band" are explicitly what I'm talking about, though he worked on nearly all of The Beatles' records in some capacity as well as produced The Wings' "Bands on the Run" and other great recordings).  With The Beatles Geoff literally invented studio recording techniques that are still considered standard today (for example, how we commonly mic drum sets & muffle bass drums on recordings was all an 'experiment' during the "Revolver" sessions, particularly the track "Tomorrow Never Comes").  The books gets in depth with the production of tracks Geoff worked on, though it's much more than just a laundry list of technical accomplishments.  There's quite a lot about how the band interacted w/each other in the studio, and gives a good glimpse into how the band 'clicked' at their peak, and how the band devolved and broke up eventually.  If you're into the technical aspects of recording this is a must-read account of the shaping of some of The Beatles' most important studio work in the mid-late 1960's (as well as the album "Band on the Run," recorded in Lagos, Africa w/just McCartney, his wife, and guitarist/pianist Denny Laine).  But I think there are also plenty of stories and other details for 'laypeople' who aren't into the mechanics of exactly how Paul achieved the staccato, articulate string accompaniment for "Eleanor Rigby."
"Here, There, and Everywhere" took a bit longer to read as it goes a lot more in depth about its subject matter.  I imagine it's considered a "must-read" for Beatles fans, but I think there is a lot of information for casual Beatles fans who are also into music in general (the story of how Geoff spliced two radically different takes of "Strawberry Fields Forever" for the final mix, two takes that were different tempos AND in different keys, is phenomenal)

Anyway, that's what I was reading while drifting in & out of sickness/consciousness: your bit of reading recs from a Beatles fan

I loved a lot of Steven Kings early works.... got to the point some of his things later were ok, but not fantastic... tho, some of his stories this past decade or so are good.
I took a leap of faith that Ready Player Two is going to be good.  I have really been in to dystopian fiction lately and am always looking for recommendations!

Oh I'm so out of touch! I need to grab this soon. What did you think?

I enjoyed it. It was a fun read. If you liked the first one, you will like this one.

BUT.... it suffers from sequelitis, in that it is not 'fresh' in the way that the first one was. It feels like there were some pop culture genres that Cline wanted to explore in the first book, but couldn't fit in, so they went into the second book. And the storyline is similar (another clue hunt, with the future of the Oasis at stake). So it's not as good as the first book. But still worth reading.

I am alternating between two books atm:  Book 3 of The Wheel of Time series:  The Dragon Reborn and CHAOS - Charles Manson, the CIA, and the Secret History of the Sixties.  CHAOS is very well researched and quite shocking.

I've been reading Andy Weir's newest book, Project Hail Mary. About 70% done. It went a very different direction that I was expecting. I'm enjoying it a lot, but I've gotten to a very stressful part and had to put it down. Hoping to finish this weekend.

Rhythm of War: Book Four of The Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson.  Epic series, but a really good read.

I’m totally into Sanderson. I’ve read virtually everything he’s written including ROW. I was able to get him to sign some books for me the last time he was at SDCC a few years ago.

I've read a couple of great making-of film books:
"Made Men: The Making of Goodfellas and the Reboot of the American Gangster Picture" by Glenn Kenny https://www.amazon.com/Made-Men-Goodfellas-American-Gangster-ebook/dp/B083Y35HK2

"Alright, Alright, Alright: The Oral History of Richard Linklater's Dazed and Confused" by Melissa Maerz https://www.amazon.com/Alright-History-Richard-Linklaters-Confused/dp/0062908502/ref=asc_df_0062908502/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=459482938033&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=5055950623524701196&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9061207&hvtargid=pla-942123459355&psc=1

"Alright, Alright, Alright" is a great oral history that talked to nearly EVERYONE involved in making that film, and is a great peak inside indie filmmaking (to be fair: it was 'indie' in sensibility for the most part, though writer/director Linklater's first studio film w/a mostly professional crew).  As a huge Scorsese fan I knew A LOT of what was in "Made Men" but it's also a good read.  I read "Made Men" in only a few days, and "Alright, Alright, Alright" in maybe a week so fairly quick reads for movie buffs

I thought he saved the Wheel of Time series.  As much as it started out really well, Jordan just seemed to have it plod along the last couple/the books he did.  Not to sound disrespectful for the deceased man, but Sanderson I thought did a phenomenal job.

I have a LCS that I do love, owner is great, yada yada. I want him to succeed, but there are times that Amazon can undercut him by $20 and sometimes is painful. Have any of you been in this position?

I'm trying to save for Europe but I want to support the comic shop, so where do you draw the line?

I have told my students every year of my 43 year career to sell their body to science or whatever it took to get off this continent and see the world. I’ll support your comic shop while you're gone.

After several failed attempts over the years, I'm finally plodding my way through The Silmarillion. For some reason, Tolkien's prose and sentence structure is off-putting to me, and I often have to re-read paragraphs to fully grok the passage. But I am now 1/3 of the way through, which is like 40 pages more than any other prior attempt.

Does he regularly come to SDCC? I know he said he has been creating more white space since COVID but I’m really hoping he is coming to SDCC

He’s been there a few times, but I think the last time he was there was 2017 or 2018. I’ve gotten books signed by him there.

He hasn’t done any cons since the pandemic except his own con late last year (which I think he’ll host again this year).

He did mention not having any cons on his schedule allowed him to write those four secret books that he put on Kickstarter.

Darn. I think we are trying to figure out if we can do SDCC and Dragonsteel Con next year. I have to get my leatherbound Mistborn books signed. And then we have Words of Radiance leatherbound coming out next year. Have you ordered Era 2 Book 4 yet?
I’m so excited for SPs. I haven’t watched any of the spoiler content. We got LB Elantris when we filled out our backerkit surveys, so we’re only missing LB Warbreaker.

I got my boss and working on another coworker reading Sanderson’s cosmere. I’m so excited to have office friends to talk to about it.

Sadly when the lockdowns started, I thought I was going to have time to read all the books I have in my flat, but the opposite happened and I hadn’t read anything. Recently realized I had no interest in the books in my home, so I went to the bookstore two weeks ago and bought two books I thought were interesting. I wanted to read more horror and mystery (but not like drugstore mystery y’know) so I bought the following: Home Before Dark (haunted house) and The Thursday Murder Club. Haven’t started on the latter however Home Before Dark is pretty easy and so far kept my attention.

Scene of the Crime by Ed Brubaker. Graphic Novel.  So far, so good. Last one was One Punch Man. I read 2 volumes and it was meh for me. Now, I'm not much into manga, so there's that.

Last time I was in NYC we did a Gilded Age walking tour and the guide said he thought the next season would center around how the wealthy New Yorkers wanted to marry their daughters to European aristocracy.  He recommended the book The Million Dollar Duchesses: How America’s Heiresses Seduced the Aristocracy, which I just finished.  It's an interesting, gossipy read and has many familiar family names.

Oh man, same. My attention span was seriously affected by being stuck in my apartment all day, and then I got Covid and that made it worse. But I've been reading a lot more this year, even if a lot of the books I've been reading are re-reads.

I told myself I couldn't buy more books until I read some of the ones I have (buying books and reading books are two separate hobbies!), and then a few weeks ago I was in a Barnes & Noble that was moving and everything left in the store was 50% off. I bought like six books.

Books I've read recently: I LOVE A Marvellous Light by Freya Marske. It hit all my checkpoints, basically. I'm currently reading Half a Soul by Olivia Atwater and really enjoying it.

Have you watched Million Dollar American Princesses on the Smithsonian Channel? It's two seasons and talks about all of that, as well as, the movie stars like Grace Kelly who married royalty. It's pretty interesting and some of those women were sassy.

I'm in a book club so I'm currently reading "Horse".

BUT, I picked up "Then She Was Gone" by Lisa Jewell and "The Inheritance Games" by Jennifer Lynn Barnes. I've heard the first one is really good from several people and the second one interested me because it's about solving puzzles which I love. I'm obsessed with escape rooms and games that involve puzzles. And I love movies like National Treasure, Indiana Jones and The Davinci Code (and of course The Goonies) where they have to figure out clues.

Me! I loved it as a kid, read them all. Recently Katherine Applegate was on a book tour for a different book but was also signing Animorphs and I got to speak to her and have her sign a couple that I brought. She was very sweet and loved talking Animorphs even though its been years. If you haven't already, check out the graphic novels illustrated by Chris Grine. They are true to the originals and his illustrations are great (a little kid-orientated, but that is the audience for them lol).
