I got a friend the same 4Day+PN during Returning Reg and convinced him to do Volunteer for the first time this year.  He also thought of refunding a day.  This helps convince him to hold on to it.

Preview Night definitely worth doing and keeping, I wouldn't refund that day.

I'm guessing it's going to close pretty quickly on Saturday once open registration ends.

why?
i'm not being snarky, just don't understand the thinking. if i were cci and i still needed folks to volunteer, i'd keep it open hoping to catch folks who didn't get all the days they wanted from gen reg

I'm assuming that once open registration starts, and 4 day passes run out, that majority of people are going to quickly sign up for volunteer spots since it's the only way after open registration ends to get a pass. Since CCI won't refund 4 day passes, if you only get 3 days, you can volunteer on the day that you don't have a pass so it's like getting a 4 day pass.  I don't know what their cutoff amount is for volunteers but if everyone applies right away on that Saturday they might have already met their limit.

To me, that seems like a huge risk to wait until Open Reg to decide whether to volunteer. I signed up right when it opened last week, not knowing how long the list would be open... minutes, hours, days, who knows. I only got Sunday badges during Returning Reg, and I was not going to count on luck to get the rest during Open Reg, so I registered as a volunteer as a safety net. Even if I do get all four days + PN, I'll still volunteer to get priority volunteering next year.

It seems unwise to not sign up as a volunteer as soon as you can.  Just because you sign up doesn't mean you have to do any shifts.  It's not a commitment.  That would also be unwise.  It's always a good idea to do a shift a con to maintain your volunteer status regardless of how many days you can get.  Sunday shifts after the con closes is a popular time for full badge holders to do a shift.  You don't miss anything.  A pre-con shift is also a great option but harder to get.

Wait, there’s post-con shifts? It never occurred to me that there would be, though I suppose it makes sense. Things do need to be cleaned up.

I’m hoping for pre-con. Planning on coming in Tuesday, so a late Tuesday or Wed afternoon shift would be ideal.

I think the last shift, well at least the latest shift I was offered, is at 11pm on Sunday.

What do they have you do at 11pm on sunday?
And, what day did you get free for working that 11pm sunday shift?

You get Sunday.  I don't know what the shift did since I did an earlier shift.  I started out by asking for the latest shift on Sunday thinking it would be like 5pm.  The scheduler said that the latest shift is at 11.  I said 11 in the morning?  He said 11pm.  A little late for me so I got an earlier shift.

Exactly. If you can volunteer after registration, then you can volunteer before it too.
