I found the dates for ECCC 2019 on the Washington State Convention Center website this morning. ECCC 2019 will be held March 14-17, 2019.

I think the later date will be a bit easier for many attendees. Hopefully it will mean a bit warmer weather!

Can one of the board mods (or global mods-[member=283]Devorah[/member] or [member=317]Zero[/member]) add a calendar link for me, please?

The later date might make this one more doable for me. I was green with envy (the appropriate color, in this case!) as I watched all of the social media posts. I want to do this one at least once!

Anyone know if there is something else going on in Seattle this weekend? My flight in to Seattle is normal price (about what I pay every year) but the flight back on Sunday is really high... nearly triple what I would expect to pay. And it's the same thing on the Monday. Anyone know what's going on?

Could be because of spring break? Or maybe St Patrick's Day (I doubt it-just guessing)?
In Austin, that is the time frame for Spring Break.

Possibly...? But neither Seattle nor my home area are 'spring break' destinations. And I don't think St. Patrick's Day is a big 'flying' holiday...

It may just be too early. The dates are not yet even up on Southwest.

But the flight out on Wednesday is about the usual price. And I usually book my ECCC airfare now (I generally fly Alaska to Seattle).

I doubt that for her. Usually you want to book a flight early than later, because the price will go up more as you get closer to the dates of the trip.

This is what I found for San Jose, since she said the price tripled due to the return flight home:

March 18th: NVIDIA’s GPU Technology Conference at the San Jose McEnery Con. Center, San Jose Sharks hockey, plus minor events that shouldn’t be upping the price.

However, the following weekend (March 22-24), you have the First and Second Rounds of Division I Men’s NCAA Tournament games at the SAP Center. It ‘might’ be because of this sporting event, regardless of TJ getting home on the 17th or 18th of March.

As for Seattle: besides ECCC, I don’t see anything major the following week. Google says the NCAA Tourney is there as well, but that’s wrong. In 2020, it will be but in Spokane, Washington (March 19-21).

Thanks, Mario! I didn't even consider that it might be something close to my home. I just assumed it was related to Seattle.

I already purchased my flight out; I'm thinking that I'll wait a couple of weeks and see what Southwest charges, once those dates open up on August 30. If they're also high, then I'll just bite the bullet and take my usual Alaska flight home.

Sure, you don't want to wait until the last minute but I find that earlier-the-better does not apply when it's too far out. Unless there's a REALLY big event (like SDCC big, not ECCC big) prices on domestic flights usually go up and down until about 4-6 weeks before the event, and this far out is usually too early for a lot of the special pricing to kick in. I generally find the best pricing for ECCC around October or November. Last year I booked in November and though I got a great deal at $118 r/t...but a couple weeks later the price went down to $98!

A major sporting event is not going to raise the prices four days earlier. One day earlier, maybe. I stand by it being too early & I fully expect the prices to drop significantly.

(I just checked SEA to SJC prices on Alaska for the rest of March and April -- all of them are currently that expensive except on Tuesdays.)

So a few friends and I are planning to head up to Seattle for our first ECCC and I was just wondering how does it compare to other cons. I'm still debating whether or not I'd rather do this over Wondercon since they're so close but I sort of want to do something different since I went to Wondercon last year. Is attendance more or less the same and how are the exhibitors at ECCC?

They are about the same size of con, in terms of attendees. In a nutshell, WonderCon is more of a Hollywood presence (not nearly as much as SDCC, but studio-type panels) while ECCC has a bigger Artists' Alley, more cosplay, more gaming, more of a literary presence etc. ECCC is weak on entertainment guests, but strong in most other areas. WonderCon is much stronger for entertainment guests and has studio panels, but is weaker in the other areas.

Hmmm I guess I'll try out ECCC then! I'm starting to get into more of the gaming and literature aspect of cons so I guess it doesn't hurt to try out ECCC. Also I don't frequent Seattle that much so I can also go sightseeing while I'm up there (but also I have a hunch that I might end up doing both cons so we'll see) ^_^

Wow! Something just came up today that I may be able to head to ECCC for 2019! Perfect, since tickets appear to be going on sale today. I don't need anything equivalent to a MemberID to get tickets, do I? This would be my first time going to a Con outside of SDCC. I'm getting excited. Are there any threads out there for what to expect and/or do as a newbie to ECCC? If no thread exists, any tips/recommendations for me other than the ECCC website (http://www.emeraldcitycomiccon.com/)?

Ben, you won't have a problem getting a hotel. However, the closest hotel is the Sheraton, and that one goes fast. You'll get something, it just may not be the closest place.

If the Sheraton is not available when you book, the next closest  is the Grand Hyatt. While I don't normally mind walking a couple of blocks, Seattle is prone to rain, so I like being close, especially in cosplay.

I just learned about this today from a friend! I was kind of surprised that there was no email with a link to the page. I remember last year (or was it the year before?) they gave everyone a link that didn't work and people were furious when they missed out on 4-day consolidated badges.

Are we allowed to resell badges? I've noticed in years past here and on Reddit people offering to sell their badges, but this is in their FAQ for this year:

"ECCC tickets are non-refundable, non-transferrable, non-upgradeable and non-resellable."

I'm like 90% committed to go, but if the other 10% kicks in, it'd be nice to have a fall back option.

Just booked a room the Springhill Suites. A bit further out but looks like the hotel with the best price/quality ratio.
Hotel prices keep on going up. The only cheap one anymore is the Quality Inn, which looks pretty nasty.

Glad to see so many FoCC people coming! ECCC is a great con. It's definitely more laid back than SDCC. It gives me a chance to experience the thing I never seem to have time to do at SDCC.

I have to admit to giggling a little at the hotel prices issue. The Sheraton (my preferred hotel) is $182, which is far less than I would pay for a SDCC hotel... not to mention how difficult it is to get a SDCC hotel in block!

Yeah, it’s nothing compared to SDCC Hotelpocalypse. But one of the biggest benefits of ECCC to me was specifically that hotels were a great deal, even compared to other mid-range cons (i.e. Denver). That’s changing.

Saturday is 95% sold out. If you want to go and haven’t gotten badges, I recommend getting at least Saturday NOW.

It isn’t gone until it’s 100% gone, but it seems like the trajectory is speeding up again after a few years of stagnation. 4-day passes felt a lot more hurried than last year. There were people who claim they got on right at noon and didn’t get 4-day. I know I got on right at noon but barely got them (I got moved to checkout at 12:05 and I think they were first all gone at 12:08, although a few more 4-day passes kept on popping up for the next half hour or so as people emptied their carts).

The last few years, Saturday took about a week to sell out. Friday and Sunday either sold out right before the show or not at all, and I don’t think Thursday has ever sold out since they added it in 2016.

Saw this thread and decided why not?!  Bought my Saturday tickets and will fly out from Jersey to go with my buddy for a day and hang out with him in Seattle the rest of the weekend.

As an ECCC noob, anyone have any recommendations of what to look out for?  I enjoy movie/tv panels, screenings, board/video games, activations and walking the floor searching for unique nerdy things.

There are no activations at ECCC, and no screenings (except for indie Seattle filmmakers). But there is a lot of gaming and some great gaming programming (panels, seminars). Walking the floor will be significant: it is huge and spans 2 different buildings! And there are other pieces of it that go off on different levels of the main building as well, including a huge Artists' Alley. You definitely won't be bored!

While ECCC isn't big on entertainment guests, they usually host their best ones on Saturday, so I often find myself sitting in the main hall for much of that day. You may well find something you like there once te programming schedule is released.

I'll be there Friday and Saturday for the second year in a row. My favourite part of ECCC is definitely Artist Alley. Lots of local and indie artists with lots of fun nerdy finds! I also love that after the chaos of SDCC it feels really relaxed and easy without being too small to enjoy for a couple of days.

Also, if you're not familiar with Seattle, it's a pretty fun city to explore. My personal can't-miss is breakfast at Biscuit b***h. Seriously, don't miss it!

ECCC you can plan your schedule meticulously and get into about 100% of what you want, or completely gut it and still get into about 90-95%.

2019 will be my first ECCC, super excited to finally go!

For those that have booked hotels through the con before, when do they usually charge the fees to your credit card?  I made the reservation and received a confirmation, but I don't see any charges (pending or otherwise) on my card.  I only have SDCC to compare to and IIRC those hotels charge pretty soon after booking.  Thanks!

ECCC has announced an official ticket reseller! People who can no longer go are able to refund their badges legitimately, and those who want a badge can fill out a request and (hopefully) have it fulfilled. Seems like a good way to combat the scalpers to me!

This will be my second year. I am from Australia and last year was my first US con. I combined it with flying into Phoenix and picking up some art from Scott Kolins (Of Flash/Zoom/Captain Cold fame). Compared to our Australian Cons was not sure what to expect, but enjoyed it enormously. Basically made plans to return as soon as I got back.
When I got back I kept thinking of all the stuff I did not get around to and berated myself for not going harder. I then worked out that out of around 28 hours I could account for around 22 of them, and I still felt like it was only half done.

Also loved the way the lines moved, loved not queuing much, loved the eating, the coffee, panels, comic dealers, and really enjoyed the Cosplay. Had high expectations there and although we have some of the worlds best Cosplayers (Henchwench etc) the enormous depth and quantity of it was really great.

Seeing a "Goblin Queen" doing photos in the park, while I was watching with jacket ad gloves and still being cold was an experience.

So looking forward to coming back

Hotel update: Most hotels still have all ECCC days available. The only ones that are gone/mostly gone are the Grand Hyatt and Sheraton. Hilton, Quality Inn, and Renaissance are also unavailable 1-2 days W/Th. They seem to be going more slowly than previous years, though the prices are also higher than previous years and not necessarily much better than deals you might get while shopping around downtown at non-block hotels.

I noticed that the Hyatt Regency (a new one, scheduled to open next month) is listed as the HQ Hotel rather than the Sheraton. I may switch to that one.

That's weird that they changed the 'HQ Hotel', but I still prefer the Sheraton for the primo location. For me, proximity is the number 1 factor.

[member=7576]Terry Gibbs[/member]  That's an interesting perspective. I have never been to an Australian con. Can you describe how they are different?

I respect our cons, and we have three big ones.
PAX is probably our biggest right now. I gaming con and I am going next year.

Supanova runs in 5 capital cities and covers all things comics, gaming, anime, and celebs. Is very celeb focused, and the venue in Sydney is used also for our agricultural show, and it feels like it. Zero ambience, zero facilities nearby.

Oz Comic Con is a Reed show. The Sydney one suffers from a poorly designed venue. Not SDCC crowded but ECCC felt empty by comparison. Now OZCC in Melbourne is a different matter. Great venue, at great location, great bars, dining, & hotels (think Grand Hyatt) and I love it. I travel down from Sydney and it is my one must do Con. The Cosplay is as good as ECCC there but thinner. We have some as good as ECCC just not as much of it. I think we have the worlds best Catwoman and maybe Power Girl.

Now what is the big difference. Well in Melbourne last year I got my badge at 8.15 then went and ate until doors opened. I swept the whole room in around 45min to an hour. The floor (not including the celeb queues )in Melbourne is around 40% of the dealers floor in ECCC. A few years ago they brought out US artists, but as we now have some Australian artists doing US work they invite them, and it seems save on the cost of bringing foreign artists out. Means you see the same guys three or four times a year, so sweep here through artist alley  is pretty quick and you have seen 85% before. (Note our Nicola Scott turned up at OZCC for a few years and she is as good as anyone and much more interesting than most). As for Comic dealers Harley is the pick of Melbourne he comes out from the US each year, and Fats the pick of Supanova. They never do both. In ECCC I could spend a couple of days just doing the boxes and chasing books.

So what is the difference. At ECCC it is lots of coffee, snacks, protein bars, and racing from one end of the other so not to miss out. At our OZCC it is catch up with friends, make some new ones, sit down watch, chill out, relax, watch the normal fold gawk at the Cosplay, I come back refreshed. From ECCC I felt exhausted (but absolutely loved it).

Thanks for the rundown, Terry! I agree that the venue can make all of the difference. Some places are just not suited very well to cons. The LA convention center comes to mind, with its incredibly narrow hallway connecting the panel space and exhibit hall space.

It's also frustrating when you see the same guests over and over again, so i can understand your excitement at seeing new faces and artists. And ECCC definitely has one of the best Artists' Alleys in the US! Interestingly though, since I am used to SDCC, I think of ECCC as the place where I get to relax and just hang with my friends. ;)

Called it. They're down to $69 each way on Alaska now. Disclaimer: of the 4 SEA > OAK flights, only 2 (9:45 PM and 5:30 AM) are $69. Still, the 4:05 PM one isn't that much higher at $86 and it will probably go down too.

Did you guys see the announcement that the main stage will be moved to the Hyatt? I'm wondering why the Sheraton was cut out of the loop... usually they're the expansion hotel, but nothing will be there this year.

I'm debating moving our room to the Hyatt. Waiting back on what my roommate thinks.
Title: Re: ECCC 2019: March 14-17, 2019

Yep, I was surprised that they're actually moving the main stage there too, although it will be nice to just walk downstairs to it. ;) My guess is they are moving the main stage to make it easier for the celebrity guests to go back and forth between panels and autographs/photo ops (which will also be in the Hyatt). Most attendees I talked to (including myself) loved that they punched the autographs/photo-ops out into a separate building, but one of my friends who works with the the celebrities said many of them were not thrilled about having to go back and forth between buildings. It wasn't as simple as walking one block away for them; there was a procedure they had to follow i.e. having to be escorted by crew, or even having to be transported by car from one parking garage to another. :X

That said...I wonder what effect this will have on the main stage and the rest of the convention center. The main stage at ECCC is nothing like Hall H, about 90% of the time all you have to do is walk in one panel before, sometimes you can even walk in during the panel you want to see. Most of the main panels the last few years IMO weren't worth walking even a few blocks for. This move will probably hurt the main stage more than it hurts the rest of the convention.

I usually spend 1 full day in the Main Stage room and go there for at least part of the other days as well. My roommate decided that she would prefer proximity to the Main Stage as well, so we are moving to the Hyatt. My guess is that the ECCC guests will also be housed at the Hyatt, to make it convenient for them to get to the autographs/photo ops/panels.

I know that Mario Wario has stayed at the Hyatt for the past couple of years and likes it, so I'm up for a new experience. The Sheraton was always about convenience for me, and now there's a definite convenience 'split' between the Sheraton and Hyatt.

This hotel ECCC is using is brand new, so I don't know how this one is, but a buddy of mine just stayed there for work and he liked it a lot! Just know you will be paying more compared to the Sheraton or Grand Hyatt. As for the Regency brand itself, I like it just the other Hyatt hotels. No problems to speak of.

By the way, after looking at a map, I see that the convention center and hotel aren't that close to each other, which means this walk won't be fun to do if the weather is bad. I will be keeping an eye on this, because I am looking at 2020. No D23 to worry about next year.

Yeah, I didn’t look at the con rates because I am not going to ECCC this year, so there you go. Speaking of the regular rates, the price to stay at that hotel during ECCC is more than what you listed. For example, one king bed room is $234/night.

There is a AAA discount, if you have that membership.

The walk is down 8th street 'through' the bottom of TCC. It puts you in the middle of the con area.

So far, I'm really liking the panel schedule. There are a couple panels with a full spectrum of guests that have been involved in major media productions: The Producer's Craft: Adapting Comics & Sci-Fi for Film & TV, Man of Action Entertainment Takes Comics from Page to Screen and So Can You, and Titmouse Animation (glad to see the last one back since they had a panel last year which I wanted to check out but wasn't able to attend.)

Also, I'm seeing more panels that include people who have made relevant contributions to pop culture one way or other (not just actors), i.e. animator from Ralph Breaks the Internet, interview with brand coordinator of Sideshow Collectibles, etc. That Pop Culture Needle Drop thing looks interesting too. And two of the main stage panels -- Boy Meets World and Critical Role -- while not exactly the latest blockbusters, do have the entire/nearly the entire main cast.

This is very promising. It's starting to look like exactly what I hoped for after the ReedPop takeover. More of these and I won't even need to pay attention to the celeb guest lineup.

That stinks that Matt Smith cancelled his ECCC visit. But if I was going, having Peter Capaldi there is not a bad replacement, in my opinion.

Did Smith or ECCC say why he isn’t going now?

I think the standard reply is filming.

Yeah, the exact reason ECCC gave was "due to a sudden and unavoidable change in production schedule." There were a few people in the ECCC FB discussion group who predicted Matt Smith would cancel because apparently, that happens often (he cancelled Denver last year IIRC, though did make it to the San Francisco Comic Con in Oakland the week before.)  I agree that Peter Capaldi is not a bad replacement. To ECCC's credit, they're usually good about getting solid replacements as long as the cancellation isn't completely last minute.

I think they love us, but we're not their top priority.

Seriously though, why does it take over a week to run the results? Isn't this all computerized?

I think that a lot of it must be manual, you would think it's all automated but wonder if they download it, manually look for duplicates, and match badges, then re-upload it?

Even though I am not going to ECCC, and I didn’t enter the lottery at all, I still got the “sorry email”. Lol  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ (Unless someone used my name and email without my consent? :P )

Anyway, looks like the results are going out, unless it was a glitch. Just to be sure, check your emails.

I entered the lottery and got an e-mail at 10:23AM PT for the Friday @ 10AM time slot. Hooray!

On a panel note: this is my first time at a ReedPOP event. Do they clear out rooms between panels? I couldn't find anything on the ECCC website. For NYCC, I see that only the main room is cleared between panels.

jamiesullivanillustration This might be coming out of nowhere... I'm super excited to announce that I've partnered with Yo Joe Depot to do a line of EXCLUSIVE VARIANT COVERS!

And fittingly, our very first cover together will be for GI Joe! This cover is an EMERALD CITY COMIC-CON EXCLUSIVE and limited to just 250 copies for the show. 50 of the copies will be sold as a limited signed and numbered set with a 16x24 Lithograph of the cover.

There's something else very cool to talk about... This will be the very first GI Joe cover that is "landscape"! Yep, this "Charlie's Angels" homage on GI Joe: Sierra Muerte #2 is printed on the cover sideways to preserve the original aspect ratio of my art!

I'm very excited to get this into the hands of GI Joe Fans everywhere!

Can't make it to Emerald City Comic-Con? Don't worry. We're going to be taking orders for a limited amount of copies for those who cannot attend. You'll be able to place an order directly through me or through the Yo Joe Depot Facebook page. All variants and Lithos will be shipped by Yo Joe Depot shortly following ECCC.

I want to thank Jay, Erin and all of you for your support. It's been a rough couple of weeks, but I'm glad I can finally share this happy news with all of you.

Here's the breakdown of the options available:
Individual Variant Issue of GI Joe: Sierra Muerte #2 (with or without signature): $20
Signed and Numbered Variant & Lithograph Set (Limit 2 per person): $40

If you would like to order, send me a PM and I can invoice you or visit the Yo Joe Depot Facebook Page.

Thanks again,
Jamie

First few years Denver searched it was a mess!  Now they are very efficient at it.  adding a queue hall was key for them, then they could open doors hours earlier like other cons.

I just can't see how SDCC would have the room to search that many people, Though they may have people demanding it.

One thing I did like that Denver did was no weapon could look realistic,  I know the costume isn't as authentic but I don't care.  The first year they had massive weapons check where they put them all, the 2nd year they said take it to the car/home or put it in the trash.

And the weather forecast is 10% chance of rain the whole con. That's dry for Seattle! Good thing, since I'll be running back and forth between the Hyatt and the convention center...

Glad you made it to Seattle, NCDS!

I picked up my badge at Will Call. Not too painful.

My previous review got lost in the 36 hour purge. :( But basically, I thought it was a disappointing ECCC (although like always, it had its high points.) Of the 8 years I've been I'd rank this one #6. It took a step back in just about every area from last year. But at least the two major changes, security and new HQ hotel, went (mostly) smoothly.

Guests: At the beginning the announcements were off to a good start with the full Critical Role and Boy Meets World Casts, but then it just kind of fell flat. The big name guests that they had been hinting at (i.e. Paul Rudd) never got announced.

Main Panel Room: Partial success. The new room itself was very nice, much nicer than the former one. No complaints from me about the distance. I saw Rainn Wilson, Sonequa Martin Green, and Boy Meets World, all of which were very good. I liked that there was a ~20 minute conversation before Q&A (rather than all Q&A). The hotel was spacious and did a great job at containing the crowds -- I stayed at the hotel and never had issues having to wait for an elevator, and barely even noticed the crowds except on the con floors. But the panel room was smaller (Maybe this was why they held off on getting too many really big name guests), and it did shift the energy away from the main con and what was left in the main con felt a bit uneven IMO. The main room schedule was really messy too, with lots of holes of various lengths that never got filled. (i.e. not a neat 15-30 minutes between each panel like years before.) But I'd still like to see them use this room in some capacity in the future, even if it's not for the main panel room.

Other panels: A mixed bag. Titmouse Animation was great. But the Man of Action panels weren't that exciting -- the second one was slightly better than the first. The Official Robotech Panel was horrible, it was mostly an advertisement for their upcoming products on a really badly put together slide show. :-/ Would have liked to see the Alien short films, but it was listed as "TBA" on the schedule and I didn't hear about it until I got a push notification after it had already started. I had good luck with the panels where individual animators talked about their work (Bob Camp of Ren & Stimpy and David Petersen of Mouse Guard.)

App: This year it seemed to be more buggy than usual. The separate panels section stopped working and wasn't fixed until a day or two before the con. (This was a different section than the combined Panels + Signings section, which worked.) At least the push notifications worked fine, which was the most useful feature of the app.

Exhibitors/Exclusives: Also felt a bit downgraded from last year. Funko didn't have a standout exclusive this year like last year's Emerald Chrome Batman. No Del Rey or Boom booths. Felt a bit unnecessarily spread out this year, probably due to moving the main hall out. The big Geico booth in the corner was just plain odd. The one thing that was better is that Tokidoki had a bigger booth, with a real exclusive (Emerald Unicorno.)

Artist Alley: Excellent, as usual.

Other observations:

While we got the screenings of AMC Badlands/NOS4A2 (and are probably better than nothing), they were just screenings. C2E2 (Badlands)/WonderCon (both) are getting full panels with cast members. It feels like ECCC got sloppy seconds.

My favorite section from last year, MusicAlley, was completely axed. I didn't even see any live music panels listed this year.

Other than the usual Burlesque and Kracklefest, their "After Hours" section was a joke. The other two were discussions about Star Trek and Battlestar Galactica which should have been panels inside the convention center and not a $20 paid event. Then some event listed in Port Orchard. Also it felt like the surrounding businesses didn't get much into it as much as last year.

My friend Lborgia88 went to the BSG panel. She said that it was very small/intimate and very detailed in terms of the information discussed. Everyone was also able to meet with the author/panel speaker at the end of the panel and get their books autographed. IMHO this warrants a small charge.
