Title: Comic-Con Special Edition 2021
Post by: perc2100 on July 27, 2021, 04:40:26 PM
Not sure where to put this news re the unique, new/comic-soon CCI event coming Thanksgiving weekend 2021, Comic-Con Special Edition.  Here's a great interview with CCI's David Glanzer, CCI's Chief Communications & Strategy Officer: https://www.thewrap.com/comic-con-special-edition-november-thanksgiving-convention-badges-tickets-san-diego-comic-con-2022/amp/ (https://www.thewrap.com/comic-con-special-edition-november-thanksgiving-convention-badges-tickets-san-diego-comic-con-2022/amp/)

What can we expect from this new event from CCI?  No surprise we couldn't have already pieced together based off of what they'd said in the past (about it being "small" and likely mostly SoCA locals), but Glanzer had this to say:
Quote
“I think we're kind of expecting this show to be similar to our WonderCon show.”

If you've never been, WonderCon is awesome: it mostly feels like what going to Comic-Con in 2000 felt like, with a great price-point.  Who knows what panels and venders will look like, but even equating this to WonderCon (to be honest, I was expecting from the get-go for this to be approached as something even smaller than WonderCon, and maybe it'll end up that way after all) from a planning standpoint is exciting!

Thanks so much for posting this article. I was just thinking this morning that @Home was over and we really should be hearing some more news about the Thanksgiving con. It's good to hear that they are still planning on it!

i'm so glad to hear David equate it to WonderCon. This is spot on marketing imho.
gives me chills in anticipation :)

yeah, where to put this is tricky but that's been the story of the year LOL

We do need a chat/general news thread for Special edition.  I may move this into it's own area in a bit- if chatter will support it

I think as the date comes closer and there's more to chat about that the chatter will definitely support it.

Two points:

1) Maybe it's just me, but I still don't see what the big deal is about having the show on Thanksgiving Weekend.  I mean, so what?  The Mid-Ohio Con held several shows over Turkey day weekend back in the 80's and 90's and I don't think anyone cared.  I certainly don't remember anyone making an issue out of it.  As far as leaving Grandma and Grampa, all I can tell you is I AM a Grandfather and I'm telling my grandkids to stuff their own dang turkey.

2) I wonder if we're going to have to show proof of vaccination to get in?  That shouldn't be a problem for most of us.

We shall see what we shall see.

1) I 100% agree, though I live in San Diego & my wife & kids are Comic-Con vets so we'll literally make plans around this event.  I was happy to hear my parents (who moved to AZ recently) are planning on flying out to OH for Thanksgiving so I won't have to tell them "if you want to hang with the fam you better buy CCI tix  :P
2) I legit _hope_ they require proof of vaccination to get in.  San Diego has been slowish moving into the current phase of the pandemic.  They still don't have a county-wide mandate like LA or San Francisco, and I can't think of many/any places that require vaccinations to entry.  By then it's plausible the Phizer vaccination will have regular approval, not just emergency (by Sept), and most large events nationwide seem to be requiring either proof of vaccination or negative test form the last 24 hours.  It feels prudent for CCI to do the same IMO

1 is mostly an issue if you can't (or don't want to) get out of your family plans. It's the only time of year I can swing going to see my parents, so I won't be able to attend. Especially since I couldn't go see them last year. Am I bummed? A little, but I understand why they put it there, and am not mad about it or anything. I hope to see lots of reports on here on the experience!

At this point I would not hold a mini con in November and I would only focus on 2022.  I feel we are far from out of the woods with this Delta variant and who’s to say we won’t get a variant worse than Delta?

Yeah, I think that it likely to get cancelled.  I had a bad feeling when we reopened in June due to the lower vaccination rates, but had no idea that delta would blow up so bad.

I'm ok if it gets cancelled if it means people will stay safe.

I'm in a "wait and see..." mode, as Thanksgiving weekend feels like a lifetime a way: it's an entire Trimester and change at the school I teach at!  Think of how much has (rapidly) changed in San Diego from May-August: that's about the same span we have now until the scheduled event.

CCI is nothing if not cautious. Plus they already have one round of outstanding badges (2020 transferred to... whenever). I'm sure they're trying to avoid having to administrate another pool of on-hold badges, and/or the expense of a badge sale that immediately turns into a badge refund. If they sell badges and then cancel it, they net $0... but they still have to pay the payment processing fees, etc. I think they're going to wait as long as they can.

If no one saw one Erik Arreaga Fb post in the SDCC group, he shared one email sent to venders and exhibitors recently saying that CCI is still talking with the city, convention center, and hotels to finalize certain requirements for SDCCSE. As for the virus, they are talking with the city and tourism authority to address the current situation. Overall, information coming soon when it is time to share. That’s it.

In person Vidcon 2021 in Anaheim scheduled for the end of October 2021 has been canceled due to covid.  The last Vidcon in 2019 had 75,000 attendees.

Fauci is now predicting that covid could be under control by Spring 2022 if an overwhelming majority of the population gets vaccinated.  That's a big if.  I don't see there being large conventions, at least in California, before covid is "under control".

The NRA canceled their annual get together due to covid.  Considering their demographic, that's a notable move.

Uhoh. An event downtown the week before Special Edition has just cancelled.

"San Diego's waterfront music festival, Wonderfront, which premiered along the Embarcadero in 2019 only to be delayed in 2020 by the pandemic, has now been canceled for the second year in a row.

The organizing team behind San Diego's Wonderfront Music & Arts Festival announced Thursday that it would push back the festival, originally slated for late fall of this year, until November 18-20, 2022."

And here we go.

https://www.comic-con.org/ccse

Everyone attending Comic-Con Special Edition will be required to wear an approved face covering regardless of vaccination status. Face coverings should completely cover the nose and mouth, fit snugly against the sides of the face, and not have any gaps.

And

Everyone will be required to provide verification of full vaccination status or proof of a negative Covid-19 test taken within 72 hours of each day of attending the event to enter Comic-Con Special Edition.

Also.

Please note: these policies apply to all attendee groups, including but not limited to exhibitors, guests, staff, press, professionals, volunteers, and cosplayers.

I'm going.  I'm getting sick of putting my life on hold because of ignorant fools.

THERE IS A VACCINE.  IT IS SAFE.  THIS PANDEMIC SHOULD BE BEHIND US NOW.

Next year would have been my 40th straight San Diego Comic Con.  I went to my first one in 1982.  Well, it would have been if not for you know what.

I've had enough of this.  I want to get out and start living again.

I will feel comfortable in there if everyone is vaccinated and we're masked.

I'm going.  I hope I see you guys in there.

1. I LOVE all of these rules; it's always great to see organizations like CCI taking EVERYONE'S safety seriously.  I also know this will will some exhibitors and comic pros decide to come (there were several I follow on Twitter who have made it clear they will not participate in ANY Cons that don't have fairly strict safety precautions).
2. It's amusing to me that they have to explicitly state what constitutes "approved face coverings," given the popularity of cosplaying at these event.  I suspect at, say, San Diego Fall Home Show next weekend they don't have to worry about someone wearing an Iron Man suit and saying it's a perfectly acceptable "mask" to wear  :P

The problem is, many cosplays now won't be permitted. The person who worked hard on that Iron Man costume and wants to wear it cannot wear the headpiece at the con, even if they have a face mask underneath. This has been a thorn in my side, but I have seen/experienced this at other cons as well.

I don't honestly think I am putting my life on hold, I just think I am using my head.  I have actually made a lot of new friends during covid, joined new groups, and someday we will all be at SDCC together.

The vaccine does not equal cure, my aunt is currently fully vaccinated and quarantined with the new variant.  Unfortunately, people refused the vaccination and it's not behind us.  But on to the mini-event.

Logically, it's just not worth the money if you are not local.  Anyone filming will not be able to attend due to Covid protocols, most of my SDCC friends are not attending, many studios and vendors are already skipping all conventions, and vendors had no advance notice to plan exclusive (plus could not get them in time).

I want to see everyone, I am just choosing to do it at a time that is safer and kinder to my wallet.  Now if someone wants to pay for my airfare and hotel I will think about reconsidering.

Just my opinion.

Well it may or may not show symptoms but you can still get the virus while vaccinated and pass it on to others. Vaccine helps with reducing chances of infection but doesn't completely prevent it 100% of the time. If we did the lockdowns correctly and everyone got the vaccine the first time around when it was immediately available this Delta variant wouldn't have been as much of a issue as it is now if at all.

They can still be Iron Man, just be creative.  Combine this with a skull cap and some face paint.  I think people would appreciate the effort.

Because when you are fully vaccinated you have some immunity, you are not immune.  You can still catch and spread covid.  Dropping masking for the fully vaccinated was the big unforced error that the CDC made this year.  Even though other countries with an even higher vaccination level than us had already experienced large numbers of breakthrough infections, the CDC decided we should follow them and prematurely drop precautions.  As expected, we also followed them and had another surge in covid.

The thing that doesn't make sense for me is the negative test within 72 hours.  That may have made sense BD, but now that's meaningless.  Since someone with delta becomes contagious in a couple of days, about 3 days before they show symptoms.  That's one of the reasons it spreads so fast.  It's not only more contagious, it's contagious earlier.  A negative test within 72 hours doesn't reassure me at all.  72 hours is enough time to be exposed, become infected and to become contagious.  All after testing negative.

These are the same requirements as NYCC.  These are the same requirements that Creation had at its Trek Vegas convention.  I believe vaccination or 72 hour test is also the requirement at DragonCon (the 72 hours is probably based on the turnaround time for a PCR test si 6 hours for an antigen test).  And all of these cons are requiring masks.

And now we know how much it's going to cost to get into Comic-Con Special Edition:

https://comic-con.org/cci/comic-con-cancellationrefund-policy

Quote from: comic-con.org
Because Comic-Con was unable to take place in person the last two years, we are giving individuals that purchased badges for Comic-Con 2020 three options:

Transfer your badge to Comic-Con 2022,
Request a refund for your Comic-Con 2020 badge purchase, or
Transfer your badge credit to Comic-Con Special Edition.

And:

Quote from: comic-con.org
1. The cost to attend Comic-Con Special Edition is $150. You may not transfer your Comic-Con 2020 badge purchase if the total amount of your badge order was less than $150.
    2. You may not do a “partial” badge transfer to Comic-Con Special Edition. If you choose to transfer your purchase, your entire Comic-Con 2020 badge order will be cancelled and you will be refunded the difference.
    3. If you choose to transfer your Comic-Con 2020 badge purchase to Comic-Con Special Edition, you will not be able to attend Comic-Con in 2022. Your badge order will be cancelled and the difference will be refunded.

150 is not bad at all.  I'll just buy a badge.  They should be plentiful, I think.  I can't see this show selling out right away.  I don't think a transfer will be necessary.

I hope it happens.  It sounds like fun.  Just like comic-con was back in the 80's and 90's.  You can get there right as the show starts, park your car right at the convention center, eat a nice leisurely breakfast and enjoy the exhibit hall dealer's room with out getting crashed into by out of control cosplayers.

Can't wait.

I am hoping that people see sense and hold onto their 2022 badges… I would hate to think that it will be tough to get CCSE badges because many of them were taken by transfers.

Well, I'll say this for the convention organizers.  They seem bound and determined to put this show on.  Obviously it's still way up in the air.  The pandemic being what it is, no one knows what's going to happen 3 days from now, never mind 3 months from now.  It's impossible to predict what late November will be like this far out.

But I really, really hope they can do it.  I miss comic-con.  I miss being with my tribe.  SDCC has been a big part of my life for nearly 40 years.  I was 24 years old when I went to my first show.  That was the first time in my life I felt like I belonged somewhere.  I'll be 63 in November and I still feel like that convention center filled with fans is my home.

I think they will.  Comic Con 2022 will be the first one in three years.  No one will want to miss that.  It should be okay.

The California recall election may also play a part. If the Governor is recalled, the new governor will likely be supportive of events like Comic Con. If the Governor is not recalled, there is the possibility that things could be shut down again (specifically, indoor mass gatherings) before November.

But yes, I applaud CCI for making announcements and clearly moving ahead. After all of the uncertainty of the past 18 months, fans need to have hope.

I know how you feel.  I'm close in age, and didn't 'discover' Comic Con until 2015.  It's my go to event of the year.  Keep praying!!! :)

Haven't missed comic-con for 40 years. I have no illusions that this special edition will be anything like a real con, but it's better then nothing. And ten times better then a "virtual" one.

And now we know how much it's going to cost to get into Comic-Con Special Edition:

https://comic-con.org/cci/comic-con-cancellationrefund-policy

And:

150 is not bad at all.  I'll just buy a badge.  They should be plentiful, I think.  I can't see this show selling out right away.  I don't think a transfer will be necessary.

I hope it happens.  It sounds like fun.  Just like comic-con was back in the 80's and 90's.  You can get there right as the show starts, park your car right at the convention center, eat a nice leisurely breakfast and enjoy the exhibit hall dealer's room with out getting crashed into by out of control cosplayers.

Can't wait.
Yeah, that's about $20 or so more than 2020 WonderCon IIRC.  If CCI is planning on a 'WonderCon-sized' convention, that price point feels right.  I agree there is very little reason for folks to transfer SDCCI badges to this CCSE: if for no other reason than it doesn't make financial sense - it would make MORE sense if one couldn't attend SDCCI but want to do the CCSE to just refund the summer badges and then buy the Nov. ones.  I can't fathom this smaller Con will sell out quickly (or at all); WonderCon usually takes awhile for Saturday to sell out, so folks could at least play the "wait and see" game.

I haven't gotten an email, and I live about 25 mins from CCI's offices!  I mostly presume that as a Pro I'll likely get a different email about CCSE badges than the one that went out today, but I could be wrong

I'm with you (albeit younger).  I moved to San Diego in July 1999, missed Comic-Con that year as I didn't know much about it, and have been going every year since 2000.  It's not only an "ahhh: I'm home!" kinda place for me, but it is legit THE most chill crowd of any other experiences I do (well...maybe minus the eye-stabbing incident  :P ).  My oldest kid,  now 19, practically grew up at SDCCI: where they spent every summer since they were three or four hanging out with me at the Convention.  My youngest, now 7, has attended every Comic-Con since his birth (his first Con he wasn't even 1 yet); heck, the one and only time I actually slept in the Hall H line overnight was when my wife was 9+ months pregnant and I got zero sleep worrying that any moment we'd get a phone call and would have to leave!  I've missed the last few years of SDCCI more than I every thought I would, and I sincerely hope that everything works out in our favor so we can 1) get the CCSE off the ground in a safe and fun manner and 2) return to SDCCI in July 2022

I really hope that CCSE happens!

I don't think people would be willing to do that since.

"3. If you choose to transfer your Comic-Con 2020 badge purchase to Comic-Con Special Edition, you will not be able to attend Comic-Con in 2022. Your badge order will be cancelled and the difference will be refunded."

Trade in a full comic-con for Turkeycon and thus loose returning registration doesn't seem like a good deal.

I usually get two emails one for myself and the second for my son. We're in two different categories, I'm a volunteer/sometimes press/general admission, he's in a general admission. My point is that the omission of emails doesn't seem to be linked to the member id's category.  It's curious

Throwback memory: Remember the old days, when there was bar tracker on the CCI website for the percentage of memberships that were sold?  Maybe they will bring that back.  It was fun seeing the percentage gradually travel across the screen.  I used to wait until it got to about 75%.  Why?  I had to save my cash up for the purchase.  :)

Well, there is a decent contingent of Pros who pay for SDCCI badges (like my wife and I), though I get what you're likely saying.  We do typically get free WonderCon badges, and if CCI is comparing CCSE to WonderCon, it would make sense that Pros may also be getting free badges to this event as well

I'm not expecting that much.  It's 2 months away, if a major player was going to be there they would have said something by now.  It's not something they do at the drop of a hat.  It takes time to spin up.

As I said when it was first announced, I don't expect anything like a normal comic-con or even Wondercon.  I expect something more like comic-fest, just on a bigger scale.  A little con to celebrate the opening of the museum.

I see nothing wrong with that ASTRIX as long as it's priced accordingly.
At $150 price point that seems really steep to me.

Yeah, at $300 for my husband and me plus a couple nights in a hotel, it starts to add up. I don't necessarily need big-name celebs on panels but there needs to be SOME sort of draw. A nice little gala for the museum is fine, but steep at that price.

Pros started getting emails yesterday.  Registration for Pros & Guests starts next Tuesday Sept. 21.  We don't know how limited the supplies will be, and AFAIK (I'm a 'new'ish 'Pro' who's only been through one or two cycles pre-pandemic) this is the first time Pros will go through the waiting room process rather than just "here's the link, go register at your leisure."  I wonder if that's either 1) a harbinger for how 'limited' this event will be and/or 2) CCI shaking off the virtual rust and testing its system before the general public.

W/Pros registering Sept. 21, I wonder how much longer it'll be before general sales go.  I vaguely remember Pro sales happening _after_ general badge sales for SDCCI 2020, as well as WonderCon 2019 though it feels like a lifetime or two have happened since then.

CCSE Terms and Conditions  (Refund deadline is November 8th)

Excerpt:

DUTY TO SELF-MONITOR

Participant agrees to self-monitor for signs and symptoms of COVID-19 and agrees to contact SDCC at [email protected] if they experience COVID-19 symptoms of within 14 days after participating in an Activity.

Quote
Terms and Conditions

By purchasing, obtaining, or using a Comic-Con Special Edition badge you agree to the following:

By attending Comic-Con Special Edition or any part of Comic-Con Special Edition, you agree to allow San Diego Comic Convention/Comic-Con International (SDCC), its agents, licensees or assignees, the right to use your image and/or likeness by media now known or hereafter devised for advertising and/or other promotional purposes. You also agree not to take pictures or videos where posted or announced as prohibited and agree that any permitted photos or videos will not be used for any commercial purposes and will not be made publicly available or generally displayed without prior written consent of SDCC.

By registering for a paid or complimentary Comic-Con Special Edition badge you agree not to sell, trade, transfer or share your complimentary code, badge confirmation, or badge. In the event that SDCC determines that you have violated this policy, SDCC has the right to cancel your entire badge order and keep any money paid by you.

Confirmations and/or badges that have been sold or provided by anyone other than SDCC will not be honored by SDCC. You must wear and display your badge at all times while onsite and at any official SDCC event. All badges are the property of SDCC and must be relinquished to SDCC upon request. SDCC reserves the right to refuse admission, to refuse service and/or to cancel/revoke your Member ID and/or badge at SDCC's discretion.

SDCC may perform any of the following validation of badges on entry to any area of the convention. These measures are an effort to prevent illegal badge duplication and unauthorized reselling. SDCC may scan a barcode, require a photo ID that matches the name on the badge, and examine the badge with other technological and/or physical methods to verify authenticity of the badge and holder. Before leaving any registration area please make sure that the name on the badge matches your identification.

I understand that I must register an individual name for each badge and that each name must match a valid photo ID. If SDCC determines that you have purchased more than one badge in your name for any day, SDCC has the right to cancel your duplicate badge(s) and keep a 10% processing fee per cancelled badge, in SDCCs sole discretion.

You must register for a Comic-Con Member ID in order to be entitled to purchase and register a badge. Children (age 12 and under) may not register for a Comic-Con Member ID. Everyone who intends to purchase, apply, or register for a Comic-Con Special Edition badge must have a valid and confirmed Comic-Con Member ID. This includes attendees, volunteers, professionals, guests of professionals, panel key contacts, exhibitor main contacts, staff, and members of the press. If SDCC determines that you purchased or registered for a badge, but did not register for a Comic-Con Member ID, SDCC has the right to cancel your badge and refund any amounts paid, less a 10% processing fee, in SDCC's sole discretion. All individuals may register for one Comic-Con Member ID only. Multiple Member IDs per individual are not allowed. If it is determined that you have more than one Member ID, SDCC reserves the right to automatically cancel - without notice - all Member IDs associated with the individual as well as any badges or passes issued to such Member IDs.

The Exhibit Hall, program rooms, and all onsite and offsite events have limited capacity as set by the fire marshal. Even though your badge is required to get into all SDCC events, it does not guarantee you access to any event if the venue has reached capacity. Wristbands do not guarantee entry to any event. Programming room, exclusives, and autograph wristbands are provided as an estimate of allowed entry/participation and does not guarantee entry and/or participation. SDCC reserves the right to limit or restrict access to any event, programming room, exclusives, wristbands and wristband events, in SDCC’s sole discretion.

Although SDCC makes efforts to ensure the purchase of badges is easy, efficient, and equitable, SDCC makes no guarantee, warranty, or representation that, by logging onto the SDCC website with a Comic-Con Member ID, you are entitled to or will be able to purchase a badge. Due to the limited number of badges and the large volume of Comic-Con Member ID holders, badges are sold as long as they are available. Additionally, SDCC makes no guarantee, warranty, or representation that the website will function properly throughout the badge sales process. In the event that the website malfunctions, SDCC will try to rectify the problem in a timely fashion. Notwithstanding, by using the website you agree that IN NO EVENT SHALL Comic-Con Special Edition, ITS PRINCIPALS, AGENTS, REPRESENTATIVES OR AFFILIATES BE LIABLE FOR ANY DIRECT, INDIRECT, SPECIAL, INCIDENTAL, PUNITIVE OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES OF ANY KIND WHATSOEVER, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO DAMAGES RESULTING FROM THE USE OF THE WEBSITE OR THE BADGE SALE AND REGISTRATION PROCESS.
Comic-Con Special Edition RESERVES THE RIGHT TO CHANGE THESE TERMS & CONDITIONS AT ANY TIME WITHOUT NOTICE.

The above terms & conditions apply to all SDCC badge purchases and registrations. Registrations for exhibitors, professionals, press, vendors, retailers, program participants, volunteers, and staff may be subject to additional restrictions outlined during the online badge registration process.

Nothing is completely safe. That was true before Covid but it seems more obvious now. I'm comfortable going to indoor events with vax/test requirements and masks. I'm also vaccinated. I know that does not mean that there is a zero percent chance I will catch Covid, but the chance is low enough that I would rather risk it and get back to in-person events than stay at home and only attend virtual things, even though that would be safer.

But everyone's personal risk calculation will be different. I don't live with anyone unvaccinated (including children) or immunocompromised. I don't have any underlying high-risk factors for complications. I have good health insurance and I can take time off work without being penalized. I think everyone has to make their own decisions about what's safe once they've taken the necessary steps to protect others (meaning getting vaccinated and wearing a mask indoors).

Also - that Paparazzi convention, yeesh. So many unmasked photos and shoulder-to-shoulder crowds! If I get to CCSE and it looks anything like that, I'm turning right back around and going home.

A quick example of how that doesn't always work:

Exactly. Nothing is 100%.  Nothing is ever going to be 100%.  That's life.

With them requiring proof of vaccination or negative test within 72 hours and mask wearing, I'm really not worried.

Vaccinations are good.  Masks are good.  Vaccinated people wearing masks are really good.  A negative test within 72 hours is pretty useless.  People can get infected with delta and be at the height of being contagious all within 48 hours.  That's one of the reasons that delta spreads so well.  It becomes contagious faster.  That's why many other countries require a negative test, then quarantine for 3 days and then get another negative test before being declared safe.

It's funny and sad to listen to expats talk about their experience coming back to the US.  They prepare by doing all the paperwork.  Taking the PCR test.  Filling out the declarations.  Then are all anxious when they step off the plane back in the US ready to be confronted by suited healthcare professionals in PPE.  Only to be left in disbelief that no one cares in the US.  No one asks for their paperwork.  No one asks for their test results.  It's like bizarroworld in the US.  It's like there's no pandemic.

Youtube has a lot of videos of expats coming back to the US.  Here's one I saw recently that is representative.

I'm going to quote this for truth.  Well said and I agree one thousand percent.

I'm tired of staying home.  I'm tired of sitting in front of this stupid computer.  I'm tired of little talking heads on computer screens and phones.  I don't ever want to hear the words "Zoom" and "Virtual" ever again.  ("Zoom" can seriously bite me.  I'm sick of it)

I want the excitement, thrill and energy of going to a comic book convention.  I want to see my crowd again.  I want to be with my tribe again.

If this show happens, I'm going to be there.  No more living in fear.  From now on, it's just living.

I hope to see you all there.

Being safe and smart is not the same as living in fear.
This isn't directed at anyone person, just in general as its something I'm told often.
I'm not living in fear, I'm being safe and protecting my family.

I understand that.  I totally get where you're coming from.  I know this disease is still out there and I know it's still killing people.  I get it.  I don't think of people as cowards if they're protecting themselves.

But for me, I'll feel safe enough attending this event if everyone is vaccinated and wearing masks.  And I do understand that not everyone feels that way.  It's cool.

But me, I'm going.  I don't want to do anymore virtual ANYTHING.  I'm not knocking the SDCC organizers for putting on Comic-Con at home.  I give them credit for trying to at least do something.  But man, Comic-Con at home is just watching youtube videos and ordering stuff online.  Y'know what?  You can already do that anytime, day or night, 24 hours a day.  IT'S BORING.  I WANT THE REAL THING BACK.

I said before that it's hard to tell what the landscape is going to look like 3 days from now, never mind November.  But unless things change drastically, I'm going.  I want my Comic-Con back.  I won't think any less of anyone who feels differently.

I agree completely. It's not at all "living in fear". It's just a risk calculation. And everyone plugs in their own numbers on the front end, so everyone's result is different.

I agree, I want the real thing back.  This won't be it and for those tired of virtual, note that studios are bringing virtual to in-person cons ( I hope that isn't the norm going forward).

I honestly never even had to think about safety for this event.  Just looking at the cost compared to the value of the convention settled it for me.  At the end of the day do I think it's safe, no. Is it in the American culture to continue on regardless of saftey, yes.  Though I still suggest double masks  ;)

I think this is equal to a local con, so if you are local and want to go makes sense. If you arent' local then you have more money than I do and should spend it on what your heart desires.

I went to FunKon, was it a stupid move, yes.  Did I have fun, yes. So I get making the choice of going over logic.

CCSE Terms and Conditions  (Refund deadline is November 8th)

https://www.comic-con.org/ccse/terms-and-conditions

I dig this policy.  It really feels that CCI is doing absolutely everything they can mitigate the pandemic during their events, and I appreciate them setting up this contact tracing protocol.  While the risks of being in a relatively big group while indoors during this time obviously exists, as a consumer I feel CCI is doing absolutely everything they can to mitigate the circumstances (to be blunt, moreso than the school district I work for/my youngest kid attends - I legit feel as though CCI is doing a better job going about their business in a pandemic than several school districts in San Diego county, at least one of which had to radically change operations after multiple legal threats from the state of CA).

I respect the effort.  I have no doubt they will try their best during the con.  I don't think the contract tracing will mean much.  I doubt many people will report themselves during the con, let alone 2 weeks later.  Even if they did, what could CCI do with that information.  It's too coarse.  Other than send out a group email out to thousands of attendees warning that they might have been exposed.  I don't think that would be very useful.

I just got an email about volunteering for Comic-Con Special Edition, registration starts on Monday, Sept. 20th:

Quote
Comic-Con Special Edition daily volunteer registration will begin on Monday, September 20, 2021.  Only returning daily volunteers who successfully registered for the Comic-Con 2020 daily volunteer program are eligible to register. Getting this email indicates that you are eligible.

Please read all of the information below on how to participate. We are moving to a new registration system so it will look very different from previous years. Because Comic-Con Special Edition will be a smaller show and fewer daily volunteers will be needed, there is no guarantee that you will get into the program. Registration will close when it reaches capacity.

NOTE: Volunteering for Comic-Con Special Edition does not affect your status as a returning daily volunteer for Comic-Con 2022. Although you will have to re-register for Comic-Con 2022, you are guaranteed to get in when you do.

COVID-19 Protocols

In addition to following current healthcare and governmental guidelines, everyone attending Comic-Con Special Edition will be required to wear an approved face covering regardless of vaccination status. Face coverings should completely cover the nose and mouth, fit snugly against the sides of the face, and not have any gaps. For more information and requirements on acceptable face coverings, please click here.

In compliance with California state and local public health guidelines, everyone will be required to provide verification of full vaccination status or proof of a negative COVID-19 test taken within 72 hours of each day of attending the event to enter Comic-Con Special Edition.

Click here for our full statement on COVID-19 protocols.

How To Participate in Daily Volunteer Registration

On Monday, September 20, 2021, click the link below between 10:00 AM Pacific Daylight Time (PDT) and 11:00 AM PDT to enter the daily volunteer registration pre-waiting room. You’ll need to enter your Comic-Con Member ID and last name as it appears in your Comic-Con Member ID account. Make sure to include any special characters like an accent or an eñe.

DELETED LINK to registration.

This link will not be active until 10:00 AM PDT on Monday, September 20. Do not share this link with anyone else. Only people on the eligible list will be able to register. Shortly after 11:00 AM PDT, badge registration will begin. All daily volunteers who click the link above after 11:00 AM PDT will be sent to the back of the queue.

It is set up to look like you are purchasing a badge, but don’t let that freak you out. There is no payment or credit card information needed. There is a payment section, but all you have to do is put in your name and email. Clicking on “Process Order” completes the registration process. At that time you will see an order receipt that will also be sent to the email address associated with your current Member ID account.

Closer to the convention, you will receive a second confirmation email with a barcode that will have the Daily Volunteer Orientation document attached. Please print and bring the barcode confirmation email and your signed forms on-site to the Daily Volunteer Registration Area. Badge pick-up times and location will be included on your barcode confirmation email.

Thank you!

I got the 3pm email too.  I really wish I could volunteer, but I just don't have the time anymore.  My goal is to do one shift at each regular comic-con to keep my returning status.  Anything more than that is gravy.  No more annual volunteer pizza party and raffle for me. :(  Even that one shift will involve making arrangements.  I really like volunteering at comic-con.  My volunteer shifts made up most of the time I spent inside the convention center.

I'm about the same distance away.  The commute on public transportation takes so long then I have to drive the rest of the way home.  So many times I wish I could just stay at a hotel downtown.  For next year's comic-con, I think I'll have to drive all the way to save time.

if they're using a waiting room& selection process(be the cheerio), they're likely expecting a lot more people wanting to volunteer then they have slots for.

I anticipate them checking vaccination status at the door.  Just my guess.

That would slow down an already slow process.  Think what it would mean if everyone going into Hall H has to be stopped for a few seconds so that someone can check their vaccination card.  That line to get into the exhibit hall each morning would be really long if everyone stepping through the door had to have their vaccination status checked.

It would be much more efficient to note it once in an attendee's profile.  Then the process would be the same as it's always been for vaccinated people.  You tap you badge, it flashes green and you keep on walking.  For the people who have test results to show, it would flash red for a secondary.  Or better yet, have the people with test results stop off at registration first to have their profiles updated.

NYCC is requiring proof of full vaccination, and it’s being checked at the door, not as part of fan verification.  So I don’t think “it will slow things down” will affect thinking.

1) _MAYBE_ it would slow down.  I typically attend an annual music trade show in Anaheim, NAMM, that is not really open to the general public and is a pretty big place for outsiders who are music fans/musicians that want to get in.  It's typical to run into pretty huge rock/music stars (I once saw an unannounced pseudo-private Stevie Wonder mini-concert, as just one example), tons of amazing music concerts, and get  sneak-peak/demo of  ALL of the music companies "coming soon" products.  It was incredibly easy BITD to borrow a badge from someone for a day, and for years I would attend with someone else's badge: it was an open secret, and vendors would often joke about fake names/job titles/companies/etc. on people's badges.  But NAMM went with an ID-check at the door, and I legit thought it would be a mega-slog to get through every day.  It turned out, they educated everyone on how the process would go, promptly told attendees both before the show and with signage EVERYWHERE, and it wasn't really that big of a deal.  MLB teams in some cities did something similar at the start of this season, requiring vaccinations for large swaths of seat purchases/entry.  Again, I went to a few Padres games with that process in place in May & early June, arriving super early thinking it would be a long line/process to get in.  It was incredibly easy, as MLB educated attendees with exactly what to expect, how to approach at the entry gates, etc. and it was an incredibly easy process: literally easier than going into the park for unvaccinated folks/not checking (I did both entries w/in a few weeks of each other as an A/B).  I think provided CCI educate its attendees, it wouldn't be a huge deal.  NAMM doesn't get quite the crowd sizes as San Diego Comic-Con, but I'd say its comparable to WonderCon, and likely higher than what SDCC SE will be.

2) you're right, that attendees who upload proof and have a different badge marking, while non-vaccinated only have furnish proof of negative testing, WOULD expedite the process and feels like an easier way to go.  I'm 100% fine with that type of a process as well, especially if it means EZ entry for me & my family.

Right, especially since CCI seems to be expecting relatively small crowds at the event: it could be a good 'testing' and training grounds before WonderCon and SDCCI

I say skip the negative test.  Either you are vaccinated and you can go or you are not and can't.  (yes it excludes kids, but you all tell me you will do anything for your kids because they matter the most.  So why are you bringing them to a crowd in a pandemic)

If you require everyone vaccinated you can wristband the first day, you keep it on all weekend.  If you lose it you go to another line.

Since I know people are still going to bring kids, it can be a separate entrance.  Where you have to show your kids negative test in the morning and get a kid wristband.  People who did not attend the first day also go to this line for their wristbands.

It makes the first day a bit slow but speeds up the rest of the weekend.

Trek Vegas did something along those lines — everyone fully vaccinated got a wristband at initial check in, then they were good to go the rest of the con.

It'll be interesting to see how that goes.  I don't see showing ID along with proof of vaccination at the door being a fast process.  Of course it depends on how cursory or thorough the process is.  If it's cursory then I don't see the point.  Just have everyone be on the honor system.  Since if it's cursory then people can just printout something that looks like a vaccination card that they can hold up to be waived through.  Based on how many people line cut, I bet there will be plenty of people trying to do that if they can.

I've never been to NYCC, but from what I understand it's pretty much contained in Javits.  Like with a ballpark, once you are in you are in.  SDCC is not like that.  People come and go from the convention center all the time.  It's spread out.  If Tukeycon is indeed much smaller and doesn't involve Hall H, the surrounding hotels or the gaslamp.  Then it might be as self contained.  Once someone goes in, they stay in all day.  Or course I guess they can also expand the perimeter to encompass a much bigger area.  Like they did a couple of years ago when they made the walkway in front of the convention center a badge required area.

That's a good idea too.  It would also have to be issued to people that present a negative test.  Which is still not something I see meaning much.  Do they have to present a negative test everyday because of the 72 hour requirement.   Or is it just once at the start.  If it's just once, then it's even more meaningless than it already is.

My guess is that they may only use a portion of the convention center like they used to do with there being less exhibitors.  I can't remember when, but they onky used to use half of it I think.

Well, besides kids, it also excludes folks who have legit medical reasons for not being able to get the vaccine.  I'm not saying just immunocompromised folks, but I know someone who is allergic to so many different things, her doctor told her "well...you can try the vaccine, but for the first dose you need to check yourself into the hospital, we need to hook you up to a few IV's, and be ready for cardiac arrest."  She was advised to skip the vaccine, needless to say.  She's obviously a cautious person in general, but she's not a hermit who doesn't go out and do stuff either.  I think CCI (rightfully) doesn't want to exclude anyone, and while the negative test isn't perfect, it's a viable alternative for folks who can't get the vaccine yet.

See Lollapalooza from this past summer as a large, intense crowd (well larger than SDCC SE will be) that was able to safely happen with a statistically small COVID-positive rate from attendees.  They had 203 people test positive for COVID-19, out of an estimated 385,000 people (more than double CCI's published SDCCI attendee number) attended the festival.  They had (from what I've read) a similar tracing protocol with attendees as CCI is looking to do, and a similar vaccine/negative test attendee policy.  IIRC they did have a large amount of attendees who WERE already vaccinated before attending, so that likely helped minimize the post-event COVID numbers.

I am sure if they can ask for vaccination records they can ask for documentation for a medical exception.    I am seeing a lot that are doing vaccination, no exceptions and I am okay with it.  I understand that excludes a small majority of people, I don't see it long-term.

Ouch. No badge shipping, and also no option to buy just one day. :( $150 is steep to begin with, and if NYCC is anything to go by there's not going to be anywhere near enough stuff to interest me for all three days.

I want to get back to in-person cons so, so, so badly... but I also just bought my first house and $500+ (me, my husband, hotel for 2 nights) for what's almost certainly going to be an underwhelming experience is A LOT. :(

No, and I highly doubt they will. CCI has always been very cagey about attendance numbers. I'd bet at most they'll say "reduced capacity" or "well below permitted capacity for the facility" or something like that.

I haven't seen any cons release their reduced capacity.  Though it's not like they are usually forthcoming with numbers anyways.  I would be curious, I saw the pictures of Gen Con earlier and it did not look reduced or organized.  I do think CCI will do better though.

That was my very first thought.  It makes a lot of difference if it's 5,000 people versus 50,000.  Considering that they say "There are more eligible attendees than available badges and not everyone may be able to purchase a badge for Comic-Con Special Edition.", I would think it's not a big number.  Unless they mean that there are 7 billion people that are eligible to attend. :)  This badge sale isn't restricted to a subset of people like previous attendees is it?  I didn't see anything like that.

Having a read on the number of badges to be sold will allow people to gauge whether to go for the sign up to be a volunteer just in case they can't buy a badge.  Then if they do get a badge, skip out on volunteering.

We'll get a good idea Tuesday after Pro registration: seeing how quickly Pro + guest badges go will be pretty telling, I think.  For WonderCon, and even for SDCCI Pro's there hasn't been a waiting room before, and a pretty wide timeline for purchasing (or claiming, depending on the level of Pro) badges & guest badges.  Having a wait room for Pros makes me think there will be pretty limited supply, but that's just a guess.  That time badges go on sale is when I'm in the middle of teaching a class, so I'm kinda nervous to see how smooth things go  ???

Agreed. But the wording in the email is confusing to me.

"If the email account associated with your Member ID account isn’t confirmed, you can confirm it by clicking HERE. "

If you're sending me an email saying I'm eligible for the sale, why do I need to confirm my email.  If my email wasn't confirmed, I wouldn't even be getting the email with details of the sale.  And how would I know the email is confirmed.  there's nothing on my profile that indicates the status either way.

Sorry for the rant, but....Am I making sense?   :P

Because CCI made things confusing regarding this, I tried to confirm email account associated with my member ID and it told me that is was already confirmed. So as far I know, we don't need to reconfirm it. I think they were referring to the intial email confirmation.

Two Questions:

My problem is that I'm not getting a code.

It's looking good for November in terms of covid.  California now has the lowest case rate in the nation.

https://twitter.com/GavinNewsom/status/1439270211874529285

Locally, after having that terrible 13% testing positivity day, San Diego continues it's downward trend.  The 7 day average is now around 4% and dropping.

The measures California have taken have worked.  That's how we get back to having comic-con.  By tackling covid head on.  Not by pretending it doesn't exist.

Except to WonderCon when that's held over Easter weekend (DC has sent folks/had a booth for WonderCon; Marvel only does NYCC & SDCCI nowadays; Funko is typically not at WonderCon).

Reading the text in the waiting room, it doesn't look like it's a random waiting room like the badge sales used to be.  It keeps saying line or queue.  Like it's a line, FIFO.  It even says if you get disconnected, you can reconnect keeping your place in line.

Update:  OK the waiting room is the waiting room.  Now at 11am, I'm in line.

I am confirmed as a vol.

Quote
DAILY VOLUNTEER CONFIRMATION

We have received and accepted your volunteer registration for the Comic-Con Special Edition daily volunteer program! You are confirmed as a daily volunteer for Comic-Con Special Edition, taking place November 26-28, 2021, at the San Diego Convention Center.

Please check in at the Daily Volunteer Check-In/Scheduling Area when you first arrive at the convention.

We DO NOT give out daily assignments for the days of the show before the convention opens. We will give you a badge and an assignment when you check in onsite. You may volunteer any or all days of the show. We do not need to know ahead of time what days you plan to volunteer. By receiving this confirmation, you are guaranteed to get an assignment on the day(s) you choose to volunteer.

A second email confirmation will be sent to you at a later date with a barcode. Please bring the barcode confirmation email with you when you arrive onsite. Attached to your barcode confirmation email will be the “Comic-Con Daily Volunteer Orientation Packet” with detailed information regarding your upcoming volunteer experience and forms you need to fill out, sign, and bring with you when you check in.

We encourage you to bring your barcode confirmation to the Daily Volunteer Check-In/Scheduling Area when you first check in. You may check in without it, but it will increase your wait time. Disabled volunteers may check in at the Daily Volunteer Assisted Access Desk near Deaf and Disabled Services.

Please print out and bring the following pages of your Volunteer Orientation Packet to the Daily Volunteer Check-In/Scheduling Area to facilitate the check-in process:

“Policies and Safety Guidelines Agreement” form
    “Volunteer Confirmation and Acknowledgement” form

If you are 16 or 17 years of age, you must also bring a signed copy of the “Parental/Guardian Consent, Medical Waiver and Indemnity Agreement” to the Daily Volunteer Check-In/Scheduling Area before an assignment will be given out.

In addition, a valid photo ID showing date of birth is required from everyone – juniors and adults – when you check in. A school photo ID with date of birth is acceptable for juniors (age 16-17).

If you have any questions, please contact us by mail, fax, or email. Be sure to indicate that you are inquiring about the Comic-Con Special Edition daily volunteer program in your correspondence.

NOTE: Volunteering for Comic-Con Special Edition does not affect your status as a returning daily volunteer for Comic-Con 2022. Although you will have to re-register for Comic-Con 2022, you are guaranteed to get in when you do.

I'm in!

I'm registered.

After you validate, it wants more info...

emergency contact, availability, etc.

since this was a new process, five (5) minutes didn't seem like enough time.

Same here.  I've been accepted as a Volunteer.  Woo-Hoo!

If they need me to work on Thanksgiving, I'm more than happy.  It's either that or watch the Macy's Thanksgiving day parade for my literally 50th something time.   ;)

Wow, they didn't give much time to type in the information before getting kicked to the back of the line again.  I hope we get more time for regular registration.  ???

Did you get kicked out?

The thing I thought was unnerving was that once it said it was my turn and that I would be redirected, it took a while for that to happen.  So long that I thought it was busted.

As for going to the back of the line, I did refresh my page after I was registered which put me at the back of the line.  That was only 2 minutes later than the current time.  So that implies there weren't that many people waiting.  The estimated time was spot on.  It told me I would be in at 11:04.  I was in at 11:04.

I got kicked out after 2min 15 sec.  I didn't have my emergency contact info ready and got the fumble thumbs.  I just tried again and got into the back of the line and immediately was let in. Again with the same paltry amount of time to complete the info.  I was ready this time.  ;D

Even after you are registered, it still let's you get back in line.  I did that by refreshing the page.  I was making sure I didn't have to log out.  Instead it put me back at the walking man line waiting page with a new estimated time.

Yeah...

They didn't say they wanted all that additional information initially.  They just said member ID and Last Name.  Once I put that in, then it asked for all the other information, and the member ID and Last Name portion was blanked out.  I got confused.  I wasn't sure if I was supposed to put the information back in or not.  Boy I hope badge registration is better.   ???

Can you let us know what "all that additional information" refers to?  What else is needed besides the Member ID & last name?

for volunteers we needed to
re type in our mem id & last name twice
emergency contact & phone number
advance to the check out page
type in mem id & last name
(something else was required, I'm assuming a CC would be required if paying for something)

I wish I had done a screen shot, but I was a little stressed.

This is what I remember...

My full contact info

Emergency Contact (Name, Number)

Special volunteer consideration (physical limititations)

Pre-Con Availability

This is as much as I remember

For Pro's, I suggest having **all** the information you provided the last time you did a pro reg.
none of the information requested was unfamiliar to experienced volunteers- we just weren't expecting it and there was a time crunch

It's the same info they've had every time I've signed up to be a volunteer.  I automatically type all that stuff out.  The only weird part was an optional CC email address.  Since it's optional I left it blank.  What that did was make my primary email the CC too.  So I got 2 confirmation emails at the same address.

Thanks for the info; even after 20 years and multiple logistics changes to purchasing a badge for SDCCI & WonderCon, there’s still that little bit of panic regarding “OMG: something maybe changed?!”
I appreciate the quick replies; I’ll chime in tomorrow with any stories of Pro badge-procuring/buying/whatever

So what exactly is Comic-Con Special Edition going to look like?

You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login
As I said when it was first announced, I don't expect anything like a normal comic-con or even Wondercon.  I expect something more like comic-fest, just on a bigger scale.  A little con to celebrate the opening of the museum.

This.

So what about all those dear little things that make comic-con COMIC-CON to most people?

Hall H?  Probably not.  I don't see any of the big studios or TV Networks being there.  And that's okay, because camping out in a sleeping bag in downtown San Diego in November would be a real bad idea.  It might rain.  It might be super hot.  It might be freezing.  (Not that any of that will stop the Volkswagen sized cockroaches from crawling all over people.)

Ballroom 20?  See above.  No sneak peaks at CW shows at THIS con.

Street Banners?  Yes, those I can see.  And who knows?  Maybe Marvel/Disney/Sony will have Spider-Man: No Way Home banners prepared.  Probably wishful thinking on my part, but it would be fun.

Trolley Wraps?  No, I don't think so.  We probably would have seen some by now.

Comic Con Special Edition Souvenir Book?  If we do, it's gonna be small.  I'm talkin' Ant-Man and the Wasp small.  But that's okay.  Small is better than anything we've gotten in 2020 and so far in 2021.  Which is to say nothing.

Warner Brothers Bags?  Ha.  No.  Not only are we NOT getting Warner Brothers bags, we're not getting Warner Brothers.  Or DC.  As entertaining as it was to watch morons get into actual fights and stampede each other running full tilt to that booth so they could get one of those stupid bags (Until SDCC and WB finally wised up and gave them out one per person at the door) we're not getting a WB bag.  And that's okay.  I always gave mine to goodwill.  I  mean, what was I supposed to do with it anyway?

Warner Brothers Booth? See above.  The online DC FanDome event in December got 22 million viewers.  They have another one scheduled for October 16th.  With those kinds of numbers, I don't think DC or Warner Brothers needs Comic Con Special Edition.  For that matter, I don't think they need regular July comic con anymore, either.  And that's sad.  I won't miss the bags, but I'll miss their booth and that water tower.

Disney and Marvel?  Probably not.  Disney is having their own online Disney + Day on November 12th.

The Star Wars Pavilion?  Probably not.

The Hasbro Toy Shop? Nope.  But that's okay.  I hate to watch grown men and women literally break down in tears because they can't get a toy.  I don't think there's going to be ANY kind of exclusive from ANY company.

Comic Con Special Edition Tee Shirts?  Hey, THOSE we will probably get.  That's a good thing.

Artist Alley?  I hope so.  We shall see.

Interactive Fun Zone at Petco Park?  Eh, no.  Probably not.

Comic-Con Masquerade?  Real scaled back, but a distinct possibility.

Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards and Inkpot Awards?  I dunno.  I hope so, but I doubt it.

Comic Book Publishers? IDW is local, so they're a maybe.  Image and Dark Horse are long shots.  Marvel and DC, I doubt it.  We'll see about any others.

So you're probably thinking ... what's the point?  Here's the point: AT LEAST THIS IS SOMETHING.  It's a WHOLE lot better than nothing, which is exactly what we got in 2020.  I'll be honest: If I weren't a local, I don't know that I'd bother.  But I'm here, it's a 25 minute drive, so I'm going.

Small cons can be fun.  San Diego Comic Fest is fun.  Comic Con back in the 80's was fun.  That was back in the days when we had it at Golden Hall and the Convention and Performing Arts Center.  The publishers of the day (Marvel, DC, Archie, First, Now, Eclipse, Comico, Dark Horse) had tables, not booths.   I loved the homemade signs they would put on the wall behind their tables.  They had some real artistic types working at those companies, so some of those signs became collectors items.

If you go, it's going to be what you make it.  For me, I'll be in the convention center again with my tribe.  That by itself is worth the cost of admission.

Had a pretty major problem with Pro Reg today. Got in within 2 minutes and I was able to enter my Member ID info fine, but when the box popped up to enter my wife's info for the guest reg, it gave me a message saying the info was incorrect or the Member ID was ineligible for this registration. This, of course, makes no sense, since her Member ID is active and verified and all of the info was correct (and she's always been my professional guest). Must have been some sort of a glitch or something. Sent a message to Comic-Con right after, so hopefully they can get it sorted out and add her to my order after the fact.

Title: Re: Comic-Con Special Edition 2021
Post by: perc2100 on September 21, 2021, 12:16:30 PM
After a bit of a delay thanks to CCI's software or what not, I got in after about a 30-45 min. delay.  All that was asked was "Member ID" and "Last Name" and for the longest time I couldn't "verify" the process.  Obviously many folks had the same issue, though oddly it sounded like there were a few who had zero issues.

The longest I waited was when the official buying started, where I had an 8 min. wait at first; this was incredibly accurate.  Oddly, my wife logged into the wait room a few minutes before I did and she had a 12 min. wait; so I'm not sure how that time gets calculated but the time does seem pretty accurate.  There's a nice graphic of a "walking dude" (probably NOT Randall Flagg  :P ) instead of the blue spinning wheel of death, and I think the screen refreshed every 30-60 seconds with time updates.  Once I got to the buying screen, I tried every combo of "Member ID" and "Last Name" I could think of: all caps, no caps, first letter caps, etc.  Nothing worked, and it timed out and immediately put me back in line.

I kinda gave up after about 15 or so minutes: once I went on twitter and saw a myriad of other Pros having similar issues (as well as texts and notifications from personal Pro friends).

Once everything was fixed on CCI's end (i.e. once I saw on Twitter that it was up and running properly), I clicked the link and had a 1 min. wait before landing on the buying screen (the 'walking dude' moved QUICK!).  From there I had to verify Member ID & last night (woohoo), then my name/info came up and I clicked "purchase" and that secured my free Pro Badge.  From there it asked if I wanted a guest, and I typed in our oldest kid's Member ID & last name and went through the process there (typed the two prompts, their info came up and I clicked a 'confirm' for their badge).  From there it took me to a final page where I typed all the regular info: my name, email, email confirmation, SDCCI email (I presume if I have a burner account attached to me SDCCI Member ID I'd put it in there?), and then it asked for optional phone number.  I typed it in and then got the confirmation screen that I got the free Pro Badge + 1 free Guest badge.

I then got the confirmation email immediately for both me & my guest (two separate emails).

Oddly, the process was supposed to happen in the back half of one of my classes that I teach so it was a bit tricky going back-and-forth from the computer on my desk in my office in one room, to back in the classroom.  All for nothing due to the technical glitch.  Then I have lunch, where I was easily able to procure the badges.  Had I been a little patient and waited until lunch, I wouldn't have had any worries (or at least a lot fewer).  But, ya know, such is the life of an OCD Comic-Con attendee  :P

My overall experience was great once everything was working.  This was the first badge 'sale' with the new system, so I braced myself for problems.  I've been through every iteration of CCI badge sales and every time they change the system there is some sort of problem.  I'm glad they were able to fix the technical issues relatively quickly; hopefully for general sales Saturday there won't be any problems!

Good luck!!

Yeah, I dunno if I just type really fast (I know I type pretty fast), or what: I didn't feel any rush to complete things.  Conversely, seeing the 5 mins click by while the system was screwed up felt like _FOREVER_

Yeah, I dunno if I just type really fast (I know I type pretty fast), or what: I didn't feel any rush to complete things.  Conversely, seeing the 5 mins click by while the system was screwed up felt like _FOREVER_

If they stick with Five (5) minutes for the Saturday badge sale....  Yeesh.... ???

So far I can't get an actual human at Pro Reg to help me out with my issue, just automated responses. Sigh...

Right; the log in was just two lines, which likely took me a total of 15 seconds to type-tab-type-enter; so constantly seeing that register as 'invalid' made that 5 mins take foooooooorrrrreeeeeeeeevvvvvvvvvveeeeeeeerrrrrrrrr
(also I have 7 shots of espresso latte as my morning drink, so by 11am that was in full swing which likely made me slightly less patient  :P )

Has anyone who couldn't get their guest verified and registered yesterday had any luck with getting a response from anyone at Pro Reg yet? I've only received automated responses. They say to let them know if you still have further issues, which I have, but nobody has responded yet.

I had to contact the Pro Department a few years ago to have a name on a badge corrected and it took a bit of time for them to get back to me.  Patience is the key for communicating with them. It looks like they still have Pro spots still available, so I'm sure you they will get you sorted eventually.

Hope you're right. I saw a few other people on Twitter who reached out to them at the same time as I did yesterday morning and were helped immediately. Not sure why it's lagging for me.

I suspect with all of the registration 'action' going on right now (volunteers Mon; Pros Tues; Gen Sat; now Press) they're pretty busy/focused - likely gearing up for Saturday's Gen Reg.  The interesting thing about SDCC SE is that CCI has never done a Con that time of year before, so everything as far as attendee interest is pure guestimate.  When they do sales for WonderCon and SDCCI, they know from history what to expect with the systems + how many people trying at one time to get badges.  So they may be a bit pre-occupied this week gearing up for Saturday.  I was kind of (pleasantly) surprised how relatively quickly they were able to problem solve the Pro Reg issues yesterday.  I figured we'd be getting an email Tuesday afternoon with a "sorry we had issues; we'll try this again Wed. or Thurs." instead of "oh: 20-30 mins later everything is mostly back to normal so go at it."

Hopefully it works out.  I had a minor issue in 2019 with a guest badge and it did take some time for them to straighten everything out.  I kind of preferred their "old way" when Pros could seemingly wait and add guests at a later time, but I understand that maybe wouldn't work with the new registration system.

One more note on the volunteer registration. Before it closed, I went back in again and then got a time of almost ONE HOUR in which to complete the volunteer stuff.  Compared to the 2 min 15 sec  I got earlier...whoa!

Of note, unlike with the earlier volunteer registration, they are advising people not to check in early.  Check in to the waiting room is between 10-11am, but there is no advantage to do it at 10am as oppose to 10:45am.  They are advising people to do it 10-15 minutes before 11am.  The way they emphasized there was no need to rush in at 10am makes me think that a lot of people were trying to get in at 10am on the dot which was a problem.

I have read all the badge info I can find for Saturday's sale, but have not been able to ferret out how much time we will have to enter information once allowed into the actual  badge purchase screens.  Considering the surprise I had at the paltry 2 min 15 sec, I got for the volunteer registration, I sure hope we get more than that.  For the last sale, we were told that badges would be held for --I think 10 min. -- once selected, while we entered info. It would calm my nerves a bit if I knew.

This seems to be true w/my own anecdotal experience over the years + Tuesday for Pro sales.  My wife logged in sooner than I did Tuesday & I got into the buying room before she did by about 5 mins.  This is happened constantly over the years for SDCCI sales as well, when a computer that logs in right at the 'wait room is open' time gets in way later than computer that logs in 5 mins before sales are set to begin.

With current COVID-19 restrictions and guidelines, Comic-Con Special Edition is not intended to be the large gathering reflective of the summer event. Reduced in attendance, shorter in the number of days, and purposefully smaller in scope, this convention is meant to be a more intimate gathering while still evoking the fun community feeling our conventions are known for, including great exhibits, programs, cosplay, gaming, and other events, but also addressing the desire from fans to have an in-person show. If that weren’t enough, while your friends may be out battling the crowds on Black Friday, you can enjoy your very own Fannish Friday Shopping at Special Edition.

We're gonna get some great deals, I bet.  Bring your back issue want list, fellow comic book collectors.   :)

Quote
Long-time attendees may find some aspects of Special Edition to be reminiscent of our convention from years past. Halls G and H, for example, will be the staging area for Attendee Registration,  and with the exception of some events at the Marriott Marquis Hotel, the majority of Special Edition will be held within the walls of the San Diego Convention Center.

Well, no Hall H.  But honestly, I kind of figured that.

We had our first show at that convention center in 1991, I think.  There was no Hall H then because Hall H hadn't even been built yet.  The convention center was only half the size it is now.  It was expanded in 2000.  The spot where Hall H is now used to be a parking lot.

This is really works for me.  A smaller show with mostly locals?  Bring it.

Don't shoot me, but I hope Comic Con Special Edition becomes a regular thing.  Not on Thanksgiving weekend, but closer to Halloween would be fun.  It would give us something to look forward to in that long stretch between Comic Con and Wonder Con.

It was 5 for Pros, and there seemed to be a bit less info to type for Pro registration than Volunteers.  Once logged in & we 'verify' whom we are (we type in Member ID & Last name, and that brings a similar screen where at the body it has your Name & you click "purchase" to take you to the buying screen), then it's essentially First, Last names; email (x3 as you do email, confirm email, and then "CCI email" in case your Member ID is attached to a burner account different from email you want to receive CCI info from); optional phone.  I presume there's a screen after that for credit card info, and I also suspect you have extra time for all of that (billing address, CC #, etc).
Minus the payment options page that Pros didn't see, it was a very EZPZ, fairly quick process IMO.

Also, it sounds like there's not going to be any off site events.  Again, I kind of figured that.  And again, I'm okay with it.  The weather in November here in SD is unpredictable.  I'd hate to be standing in line to go see a Walking Dead event holding an umbrella.  And pouring rain would be hard on Zombie make-up.   ;)

I agree this is cool, and would _LOVE_ to see this as an annual late fall/early winter event.  If this is sounding like old-school Comic-Con, though, I wonder why they're only selling 3-day badges.  This sounds like it _could_ be the type of Con one could traverse in a day: depending on panel programming, at least.  I don't go back as nearly as long as you do, but I do go back long enough to pre-date Hall H (it was built but not used for programming like nowadays - I remember the first year for Hall H I walked right into a half-empty LORD OF THE RINGS panel), Preview Night, etc.  IIRC, the awesome SPIDER-MAN panel (with the cool poster that's not a collector's item) was in Ballroom 20, or somewhere upstairs.  I remember THE INCREDIBLES panel not in Hall H but an upstairs room (I think even smaller than Ballroom 20), etc.  Of course, the original STAR WARS, BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA, and other pretty big Hollywood films have had presence at the relatively small (compared to now) Comic-Cons of past.  I'm really curious to see what type of programming they'll have at this Con, though I'm mostly expecting a smaller-than-WonderCon event

Duuuuuuuude!!!!   Yes!!!!  I was just thinking about that Raimi Spider-Man panel the other day.  That was awesome.  There was a John Carpenter's Ghosts of Mars panel that preceded Spider-Man.  I remember thinking that we were lucky to be in the presence of two great American film directors on the same day: Sam Raimi and John Carpenter.

Yes!!!  I was at the Bram Stoker's Dracula panel, too.  It was great to see Francis Ford Coppola.  And you are spot on about Star Wars.  I wasn't there then, but according to comic con historians, 1976 was the year that changed everything.  Lucasfilm sent reps to the just six years old San Diego Comic con specifically to create buzz for a little film no one had heard of ... Star Wars.  IGN has a great article about it here (https://www.ign.com/articles/star-wars-first-comic-con-panel-1976-convention-a-new-hope).  The folks at Lucasfilm did it again in 1979 for The Empire Strikes Back (By then, the entire planet Earth knew about Star Wars).  My first Comic Con was 1982 and we were packed like sardines up in the copper room to see an advanced peek at Return of the Jedi.  Lucasfim and Comic Con have been married ever since, and of course other studios jumped on the bandwagon.

Folks who say that the early comic cons were all about comics and JUST about comics are wrong.  Movies and TV shows have always been in the mix.  Maybe not to the extent they are today, but they've always had a presence.

Great post, perc2100!

Yes, IIRC there was a confirmation type page.  Because Pros get 1 free badge for themselves + 1 free badge for a guest (at least myself and wife did; maybe other types of Pros got more guest badges?), there was no credit card info page and thus no substantial "are you sure you want to pull the trigger on this $150 purchase" page.  But there was a confirmation page from what I remember, and then a "congratulations, you procured X badges for these people" type page at the end.

STEP 1: Enter the Comic-Con Member ID and last name of yourself or the person you’d like to purchase for.

STEP 2: Click “Validate”. You’ll see that their name now appears under the “Validate” button. IMPORTANT: Your badge will not be in your cart until you select “Add to Cart” at the bottom of the page.

STEP 3: After you select “Add to Cart”, a pop-up will appear that allows you to purchase for other attendees. If you’d like to purchase for another member, select “Register Another Member”. If not, select “Checkout” and move to step 5 below.

STEP 4: To register another member, follow the same steps above. The members already in your cart can be found on the right side of your screen.
If you want to remove a member, you can do so by clicking the red X next to their name while they are in your cart on the right-hand side of the screen.

Remember, you can purchase for a total of 3 members. If you want to clear someone after they have been validated, but before adding them to your cart, simply enter in a new Member ID and last name. The newly validated member will replace the person previously listed.

STEP 5: Select “Checkout” from the pop-up when you have finished adding all members. You’ll be directed to our COVID-19 policy and purchase terms and conditions. Select “I agree to the above statement” and then “Save & Continue”.

STEP 7: Confirm your address when prompted. We highly suggest that you confirm the “Suggested Address.” This will help ensure you have the correct address for future badge shipping (NOTE: We are not shipping badges for Special Edition). If you receive the “Invalid Address” pop-up, review your address for accuracy. If it is correct, you can still select “Use Address Anyway” and continue. Then, enter your CVV code when prompted and select “Continue”.

STEP 8: Enter your name and email address. The email address you enter must match exactly and is case-sensitive.

STEP 9: Below the contact information box, you can review your order. This is also where you can remove members if needed. Simply click the red “X” next to “Comic-Con Special Edition”.

STEP 10: Click “Process Order” and you’ll be directed to the confirmation screen.  Print or take a screenshot of this page for your records. You may close your browser window at this time.

THE FINISH LINE

Congratulations! Your Comic-Con Special Edition badge purchase is complete.

If you do not receive your order receipt email within 24 hours, check your SPAM inbox or log in to your Comic-Con Member ID account and use the "Contact Us" feature.

THE FINE PRINT

While Comic-Con has made every effort to make the badge purchase experience fair for everyone, it is possible that problems outside of our control could result in the system not working as planned. The possibility exists that anti-virus, anti-spyware, and anti-malware software may aggressively block browser cookies, JavaScript, or other operations of modern web applications. It is also possible that user error, specific hardware problems, local ISP issues, or simply the extremely high level of demand beyond our control may result in your computer and/or browser not behaving as described above. While Comic-Con has done extensive testing, we make no guarantees that your efforts will result in a successful badge purchase regardless of when you enter the process.

As always, we are sincerely grateful for your continued support and interest in our event. We know that purchasing a badge can be a challenge and we are constantly exploring options to improve your online registration experience. We will continue to offer deeply discounted rates for juniors, seniors, and active-duty members of the military, as well as one of the most generous free child badge policies in the comic convention industry.

i was thinking they may be testing a new badge buying process for the special edition and for events going forward.

I anticipate them checking vaccination status at the door.  Just my guess.

COVID-19 Policy FAQ

Quote
We are working to provide a safe and enjoyable event and trust that all attendee groups, including but not limited to exhibitors, guests, staff, press, professionals, volunteers, and cosplayers will do so as well. Please be aware that adjustments may need to be made to these policies and guidelines prior to and during the event in order to ensure the health and safety of all attendee groups. Am I required to wear a face covering during the convention?

Yes.

An approved mask or face covering must be worn at all times. We look forward to seeing your creativity!

Do children still need to be present to pick up badges or can parents do that without them?

Children (age 12 and under) must be present to be registered for a badge and adults will be required to provide emergency contact information for any child registrant.

I guess that means the CDC card.  I was hoping to use the California, don't call it a vaccine passport, vaccine passport.  But that doesn't come directly from the healthcare provider.

I totally support this policy but I wonder if asking is the same as forbiding.  Since I think that the ADA might have something to say about it.  IMO, that's the whole point of the 72 hour testing policy versus vaccination.  Since some people cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons, it's a reasonable accommodation.  Some companies have people that can't wear masks wear face shields instead.  Which is pretty useless but it is what it is.

It also says that guests not wearing masks will be removed, though. That sounds like forbidding to me.

STEP 7: Confirm your address when prompted. We highly suggest that you confirm the “Suggested Address.” This will help ensure you have the correct address for future badge shipping (NOTE: We are not shipping badges for Special Edition)

No badge shipping for this con! Hopefully pick up won’t be too bad for all of you!

If I had to guess with Funko, I say not going but new Toucan items being sold at a SDCCSE booth. Similar to what is going on with NYCC ‘21 and the two Funko exclusives.

The pricing for some of the hotels still aren’t great. For instance, $800+ stay for 3-nights at the Hilton Bayfront? Haha, no.

The savings should have been more, in my opinion.

It's still way cheaper. We got MMM for $250 per night. It was close to $400 (SDCC block price) in 2019. I'm happy!

One thing I’m really liking about the hotels this year is that you can still cancel your hotel up to 11/11 this year. I’d imagine by that point we’ll have a pretty firm grasp on what the schedule will look like

Most definitely winning there versus SDCC’s hotel cost and not being able to book a room with ease. Yet knowing what SDCC gives you in overall value, $250 per night is easier to accept, I think. Plus, comparing the con prices to what the hotels are asking (when booking directly) for the late November SE dates, the savings are not so huge.

No badge shipping for this con! Hopefully pick up won’t be too bad for all of you!
IIRC they were suggesting folks pick up badges at their leisure during the day on Tuesday or Wednesday before.  This is relatively easy for locals that can get time off (as a teacher who's off all week, that seems very doable for me at least), and anyone who is looking at flying in before Thanksgiving to make a holiday of the event.  FWIW, CCI did badge distribution for years once sold-out/pre-badge shipping with incredible efficiency: like, the easiest/fastest-moving line all week!  Same with WonderCon.  While we've been kind of spoiled the last few years with badge shipping, I think CCI will be able to manage this fairly easily!

I wondering what it's going to be like if it's a cold wet con.  There was a time when Nov weather was still pretty good in San Diego.  Right now there's rain, lightning and thunder at the end of Sep.  It's only 3pm but it's as dark as it is at 7pm.  Climate change.

IIRC the last Thanksgiving I went to someone's house in 2019 was pretty rainy.  Don't remember the rest of the weekend, though it is rare to have multiple days of constant wet weather here.
I agree Friday's weather was trippy!  I was in the Carmel Mt./Rancho Bernardo area (I guess technically 'central county?') in a meeting inside a windowless room, and the thunder was LOUD!  We didn't get much rain at all, but there were flood warnings on my phone

From the San Diego Union-Tribune, re attendance.

Comic-Con International, though, decided it would still attempt a smaller-scale in-person event this year, scheduling it for Nov. 26-28. The normal, pre-pandemic conventions typically attract 135,000 attendees over four days. Comic-Con spokesman David Glanzer, during a July news conference, said it’s difficult to predict attendance for the November event, but gave a rough estimate of 60,000.

It doesn't feel like it's going to make it to 60,000.  Pretty much the big demand dropped off an hour into the sale.  Then there was no wait.  I don't think there is an ongoing mid to high level of badge sales.  Has anyone bought a badge today?  What's the order number up to?

This is gonna be a logistic nightmare...one location to have peeps check in (except for Wednesday) is gonna be insane.  I remember the lines of peeps as we'd just make the walk towards Javits, imagine how this is gonna happen for say Saturday tix, when folks can't get there during the week?

Love the idea, as it'll make it easier to leave/return, but dang, I am not looking forward to that first line of the day...ho boy...

They did.  Same as usual, starts on Tuesday.  But I think Transmute was referring to arrival in the evening.  Whether badge pickup will be available that late.  Considering that Tukeycon will be in full swing then, I would think so.

They announced that early badge pickup would be available on Tuesday and Wednesday, but did not say Thursday. I get why they wouldn't, since Thursday is Thanksgiving...but offering a Thursday pickup would be useful for folks coming from out of town.

But either way, I'm not too worried about badge pickup. Up until a few years ago, all badge pickup was onsite and it has never taken me more than a few minutes.

As hikanteki pointed out, Thursday is Thanksgiving and not listed. No way do I see anyone working that day at the convention center. It’s family day/time off people like having.

Tbh, I see no issues picking up badges in-person besides the line going slow if it happens.

Me too!  I think that'll be a fun way to spend a few hours that day.

To be honest, Thanksgiving has never been one of my favorite holidays.  I stopped caring about football years ago, the Macy's parade bores me to tears and I've never really cared all that much for traditional Thanksgiving menu items (Candied yams?  Really?  Yuck.  How about a cheeseburger instead?).  I think going down to the convention center, being with other fans and doing something useful sounds like a lot more fun.*

Now, Halloween?  Christmas?  New Years?  Fourth of July?  Those I can get behind.

*DISCLAIMER: Please do not be offended by anything I've said if Thanksgiving is one of your all time fav holidays.  It's just my opinion, that's all.  If you love Turkey Day and it brings you joy and happiness, then that's great.  I'm glad for you and I hope it always does.

I'm not a big Thanksgiving fan either. I hate turkey, and there's no real meaning behind the holiday for me. I'm happy to get 2 days off and spend time with family... and I'll be doing both of those things as we fly down on Thursday to attend CCSE on Friday this year.

I do love BF shopping (online, mostly) but I'm happy to give that up for CCSE.

I know, Thursday is a holiday... but WonderCon has been on Easter for so many years... I'm hoping that *someone* will be there allowing badge pickup on Thursday!

Okay, I grant you that.  Honeybaked ham is good and a great substitution for turkey.

Also, something else I thought of: There are usually some good movies that come out on Thanksgiving weekend.  I actively try and avoid malls on Black Friday, but Thanksgiving is a good day to go see a film.

So, four days off, honeybaked ham and good movies.  Okay, maybe turkey day isn't all that bad.

I'm still gonna do volunteer work that day, though.   :D

Count me in as another Thanksgiving non-fan. A holiday that encourages overeating on bland, starchy food, and makes relatives think they're required to get together even when they don't really want to.  ;) No offense to those who get together because they actually want to -- that's obviously a very good thing! And of course, no real judgements on people who like turkey, candied yams, canned cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, and stuffing. More for you, less for me. (Except stuffing, that I find very tasty.)

It's a myth you have to spend it with your given family.  I don't  :)  Once my brother moved away and the remaining family was just watching football I said no thank you.  That is also when the honey ham tradition was born.

I say they give you a paid day off and you make it yours!

Though in general, I agree I hate forced holidays and I get a lot of crap from my family for not partaking.

When I was in HS & college, before I got married, I absolutely LOVED working holidays.  I spent most of those years working at a video rental store that was open every day of the year, and I volunteer for the time 1/2 pay that was often low-key business for the most part to essentially watch holiday movies: all while avoiding spending time with family.  When I was younger this was the best of all worlds for me - getting paid extra to NOT hang with the fam AND watch movies!

IMO if one loves to spend time with their family (as I do now that I'm older) holidays are a nice excuse where everyone has the day off.  Otherwise, why force it: do what you want and enjoy!!

Making a paid holiday yours is never a bad thing! ;D The deal is, I actually like my given family, but we have never been picky about having to spend Thanksgiving (or other holidays) together. I live far away from them so we just get together when we can. It’s the in-laws on the other side that I get crap from. I don’t even mind the in-laws separately, but more often than not, it’s clear that none of them want to be around each other. But, I’ll be missing that this year since I’ll be in San Diego instead, so ha ha.

Comic-Con International has quietly unveiled this year’s exhibit floor hours, and they are as follows:
            Friday, November 26: 11:30AM-7PM
            Saturday, November 27: 8:30AM-7PM
            Sunday, November 28: 8:30AM-5PM

Wow, 8:30 AM is kinda early.

I like it.   ;D

Ha; for folks like me, who lives about 20/25 mins from the Convention Center and is thus always buying parking, fighting traffic, etc. I get to the Convention Center usually between 5:30-6am daily, then waiting for...whatever to start (sometimes napping in my car until the exhibit hall opens at 10).  In a sense, 8:30 seems like "I can sleep in a little!"  :P
My wife and 7 year old are incredibly early risers, with my oldest following my lead and being more of a "sleep in quite a bit" type.  8:30 feels like a manageable compromise for both mindsets

Wow. 8:30am-7pm on Saturday is a LOT. As someone who can rarely even amuse myself for an entire normal-length day on the floor at Wondercon, I can't help but feel like this is overly ambitious. What will there be to do?

Well, the cool thing is it's a large _window_ for folks to come and go at their leisure.  As someone w/a wife, seven year old, and a 19 year old who will be home from college for the weekend, I dig the idea of of having that length of time for us to plan our day at our leisure.  For example, I can see us going Friday am to check things out, and then maybe go to the zoo first thing Sat. morning, swing through gaslamp for lunch around 11/12, then hit the exhibit hall early afternoon.
Of course, who knows what panels will be that we may want to attend.  For me, it's rare to even see the Exhibit Hall on a Saturday of SDCCI as I'm typically in Hall H all day until the Exhibit Hall closes.  In this case, it would be more likely I could be in panels all day but still be able to swing by booth early morning or late afternoon/evening.

The important thing is CCI is seemingly giving us options!  FWIW, CCI Exhibit Hall is typically open from 9am-7pm; can't remember what the WonderCon exhibit hall schedule is

Exactly.  I know some people do spend all day there but for me it's a quick walk through once or twice a day.  The only time I was in a hurry to get in one morning was when they were giving away drinking horns at the Vikings booth.

I would say this con is impossible to compare to any previous one. So hard to tell how quick they will process them.

It took them eight business days to process them this time.  Now it's just a matter of my bank electronically receiving the refund which could take another three to five business days.

Quote
The Comic-Con Special Edition Program Book is the official publication commemorating Comic-Con Special Edition 2021. Content will include the schedule of events as well as guest biographies and additional information for our first-ever convention in November. The Program Book will be available in limited supply as a print publication and will also be digital for download.

We are also offering this publication as a free downloadable PDF during the week of Comic-Con Special Edition, on  November 26-28. We will be offering links to these free downloads to all of our followers on social media: 5 million total combined on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram!

So it looks like there will at least be an actual book to collect this year.  :)

OR effect the convention center's production crew. While i don't know if the crew is union, I have to believe it is.

interesting article with specifics on what to expect

Bottom line, it affects only film production, not stage

Quote
Who will be affected by a strike?

Some 60,000 workers employed on dramatic, scripted TV shows and feature films will walk off the job if no deal is reached by Monday.

Crews employed under different contracts, such as those covering commercial shoots, music videos, low-budget theatrical shoots and live sports, can continue to work. Additionally, crews who work on nonunionized reality TV series and other unscripted programs may also be unaffected.

Some productions that air first on premium cable channels such as HBO, Showtime and Starz could also continue, as they fall under a separate contract that runs through the end of 2022, according to the IATSE pay TV contracts. There may be gray areas that will require labor attorneys to figure out whether shows can proceed.

It's my understanding that studio publicists are generally in IATSE so this could be an interesting wrinkle.

Even more interesting wrinkle is how the strike may impact Marvel's THE ETERNALS premier Monday...

Oh bummer. You think so?

Does that mean no film or tv panels either?

At least NYCC had lots of panels like The Boys, etc.

But when they say Special Edition Con "will be small", the question is, how small.

I don't think you'll see studio or tv show panels there either, and if they are, they'll be virtual.  Stars don't want to go, they missed seeing their families last year and they want to spend time with them.  Studios aren't going to want to pay to send the celebs, especially with Covid risks.  And while yes, NYCC had a panel for the Boys, it was not an Amazon panel -- they were there as photo/autograph guests, and were doing a panel as con guests -- same as they've been doing at multiple cons this year.

No, the studios did send some panels — Ghostbusters Afterlife, Star Trek Discovery and Prodigy, Outlander, What We Do in the Shadows, Y the Last Man.  Studios also did prerecorded virtual panels.  And all of the panels by Amazon were prerecorded/virtual.  Everything that Disney+ sent was prerecorded/virtual.

Well, there IS more to a Comic-Con than movies and TV stuff.  I know I personally go mostly for movies and TV stuff, but there are plenty of quality comics pros announced as 'special guests' so far.  WonderCon always has somewhat of a movie & TV presence, so I guess we'll see what might happen panel-wise here.  I'm sure plenty of 'celebrities' looking to make some holiday cash will be available for pics & autographs as well.

There are always a bunch of them up in Sails.  That's why there are all those booths up there.  They aren't A listers.  Do A listers even do paid pics/autos?  But they are solid celebs none the less.

yes there are some up in Sails, but no where near the celebs that are doing paid autos at NYCC, C2E2, and everything else.
These days yes almost every level of celebrity does signings.  Like was mentioned above the cast of The Boys were doing paid signings, hence why they had a panel at NYCC. That level of actors don't typically do paid signings at SDCC, always free signings as it is part of the promo they are required to do to promote the movie/show.

A-Listers do, depending on how you define A-listers.  I have gotten photos/autos from Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Paul Rudd, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Don Cheadle, Brie Larson, Tom Holland, Forest Whittaker, Felicity Jones, all at fan conventions.  But they tend to have high appearance fees.  And b/c of filming scheduling getting thrown off due to Covid, and Covid concerns, they really haven’t done cons this year.

One year I saw a prominent cast member of The Expanse up in sails doing it.  I was surprised he didn't get that many takers since The Expanse panel was full.  Even for bigger stars, I'm always surprised how few people show up compared to all the people that struggle to get into their panels.  I would think that the chance to get up and personal would be worth the fee for many of them.  I feel sad when I see a celeb sitting alone at a booth.

I don't go to Comic Con for the movie/tv panels, so this doesn't matter to me.  I go for all the other panels and the exhibit floor AND for my psyche.  I don't have any illusions that this will be like the July Con.  I'll just be glad to step inside the convention center.

Oh for sure, me too. There's a lot of fun stuff happening at the cons.
Not necessarily for the movie/tv panels, but the presentations that come with it are normally cool too. For example, I just saw the Ghostbusters: Afterlife panel at NYCC and it looked like they also did a world premiere, so that's pretty cool too.

I forgot about that, I will say that factor beefed up NYCC panels.  If they do it, I would think it would only be for the special event.

Do they have that type of thing for Wonder Con?

Overall CCSE has a few things against them that NYCC didn't have.  The Holiday is a huge one, not all attendees will be vaccinated (increases the liability for the studio to send cast), no way for actors to come to make a quick buck (won't be encouraged to go on their own).

However, also think about this, now people have seen a big con can happen and as far as I know the covid cases are low from it.  So now a few more may be comfortable going.  Also CCI may be giving some incentives for future conventions.
Title: Re: Comic-Con Special Edition 2021

At the same time, it’s also not a regular con.  It’s not SDCC.  It’s not selling out.  It just might not be an event that studios/networks consider big enough to throw their advertising bucks.  And in addition to NYCC just happening, DC just did its Fandome.  I have a feeling Disney will be doing another investor day and revealing a lot, since when they did that last year, the day after the stock hit an all time high.  It might be a good opportunity for smaller projects, but the big names have done or likely will do their own thing.

Eh, I wouldn't quite go that far. Many studios do announce what they intend to bring before SDCC announces the schedule, but it's definitely not "most of it long before they announce." We get some of it long before they announce, and more keeps on coming (but I still don't think it quite reaches "most," though I guess that could be splitting hairs) as we get closer to the event.

I do expect us to see some studio panels once the schedule is released. Am I expecting to be surprised with a full fledged Comic-Con, absolutely not.

That's a different type of show, so I'm guessing it doesn't affect us.  And I think they're using the covid procedures as an excuse when it's probably really the chip shortage that's a bigger problem for them.

Does anyone in San Diego know if any other conventions have been canceled?

Just take a peak at Denver Fan Expo and set your expectations there.  If you do that you will think CCSE is the best con ever  :P
I could be wrong...but I feel like some of those celebrity guests at Denver may be bigger than whats at CCSE....

This is interesting - I hope it doesn't affect CCSE: https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/san-diego-international-auto-show-canceled-again

I remember when they announced that a few days ago.  It's not covid related.  It's because there aren't enough cars in inventory to show.  No cars mean no car show.  I don't think that Tukeycon is reliant on the inventory of new cars.

I just got this from Adult Swim, "This November, prepare yourself for never-before-seen music and comedy sets, plus watch parties and panels".  Does this mean they will be at Turkeycon?

Sadly, I had to ask for a refund for my badges a few hours ago.  With my crazy circumstances, it was going to be a flyby con at best.  I was hoping to be there a couple of hours a day.  Then things took a turn for the worse and even that became a pipe dream.  So no Turkeycon for me.

Reminds me of the old days before Preview Night.  Picking up your badge on Wed. night at the hotel downtown.

Those were good days.  It was nice to get your badge, program book and panel schedule the night before.  It gave you a head start on planning the weekend.

Ha, I was just thinking about the 1989 convention the other day although I have no idea why.  I thought for sure the program book that year was going to have a Batman cover.  After all, it was the Caped Crusader's 50th anniversary AND there was a blockbuster movie with Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson that had just been released.   I was quite surprised and somewhat taken aback that the cover art did NOT feature Batman.  In fact, as I recall, there were no Batman panels at all that weekend and nothing to mark the movie or the milestone anniversary.  It seemed odd.  I found out later that Warner Brothers and DC wanted to control all the publicity about Batman while the movie was still hot.  They wouldn't even let a non-profit like SDCC do anything Batman related.

This is what the cover looked like that year:

It was a beautiful render by Bill Sienkiewicz (Who made a name for himself on Marvel's Moon Knight and New Mutants) and I loved it, but ... still a little disappointed it wasn't Batman.

However ...

DC made up for it in 2014 with Batman's 75 anniversary.

A striking cover by DC co-publisher Jim Lee.

Sometimes you have to wait awhile ... but if you're patient and you hang around long enough, you CAN get what you want.   ;)

It looks like the weather's going to be nice this weekend.   Sunny on Friday and partly cloudy Saturday and Sunday with highs in the mid-70's.  Right where ya want it.

It's going to be strange to be downtown for a comic convention this time of year.  It's going to get dark REAL early and I think we'll need jackets when we're in the gaslamp at night.  But hey, that's okay.

I'm ready to have some fun!

Contrary to the blog information
there are RFID chips in the lanyard and they are assigned to your name.

I was told the volunteer badges would be activated for the days we choose. IOW, the chip would be turned on for the days we are working.

How does vaccine verification work?  Do I have to immediately go to badge pickup?  The reason I'm asking is that I'm not even sure I can do a volunteer shift.  But if I can, time will be tight.  Based on the length and duration of those lines in the photos, it would help a lot if I can pre-verify instead of waiting in line the day I can do a shift.  So I'm wondering if I can go get the wristband on an earlier day and then pickup my badge on another day.

no you don't have to go immediately to badge pick up
I think you'll have problems tho. they seem to do wrist bands by day. ie yesterday was a green, to day may be a different color. the red are for the whole weekend but i had to show my proof of paid badge not my volunteer email.

Thanks.  That complicates things then.  Unless someone has a paid badge and gets the red band, then I guess they'll have to do vaccine verification everyday.  So if a volunteer wanted to pickup their badge today for a Friday shift, then they would have to go through verification today to get the badge and then again on Friday to work the shift.

There seems to be some confusion on the different colored wristbands: some saying one color was for Exhibitors and one for reg. attendees, some reg. attendees saying are getting both colors, some saying one color is for vaccinated and one for neg. testing, etc.  I think at this moment, I wouldn't panic quite yet.  Also, as for Wed. early afternoon there were zero lines so there may not be a huge crush

I don't know why there are even different colors.  That wristband isn't a badge.  It should only be used to verify your vaccination/test status.  As far as I know, it's binary.  Either you qualify or you don't for the entire 3 days.  So either you have a wristband or you don't.  Should it matter if you are an exhibitor, panelist, volunteer or attendee?  That's what the badge is for.  Not the vaccination wristband.

Since I'll be at the museum on Friday, I think I'll get a wristband that day just in case.  If it works on another day, great.  If not, I've lost nothing.

There was a story about Turkeycon on KBPS, NPR, this afternoon.  The teaser for it was "comic-con without hollywood".  I missed the first part of it, I was getting something to drink.  So I only caught the last couple of minutes.  They had a creator on that was excited by it.  It was back to what comic-con used to be.  They also had interview soundbites from DG.  He made a point of saying that this is not the grand opening for the museum.  It's as they've been saying, a soft opening.  The real grand opening will be in 2022.  Also someone, I forget who, said it was a "reopening".  Which made me think, when has it ever been opened?  There have been events that have used the space, but it was never technically open.  Other than the cafe.

There seems to be a hike in the replacement badge fees.  Yikes.

From the Special Edition Program guide:
"Make sure to keep your badge safe and secure at all times. Lost or damaged badges are subject to a $150 replacement fee."

For reference, I copied the statement below from the Badge info area on the CCI website.
"Please keep your badge safe and secure at all times. Lost badges may be replaced for a nominal fee at the Attendee Badge Solutions Desk

Both vaccination verification tables at Hall H and Hall D had pretty long lines.  The lines move very quickly for a reason.  It's a cursory check.  The sign said I had to show my card and matching ID.  So I had my ID ready to show.  It wasn't needed.  The person who validated me just looked at the vaccine card in my hand and waved me through to the people at the end that put on the wristband.  The only color they were putting on was red.

Today, the Hall D verification table is gone.  The Hall H verification tent is shuttered.  It's still there but unmanned.  Strangely, they set up a couple of tables about 10 feet to the right of it.  So that's where they are verifying now.  There's no line.

It's strange to have a comic-con without Gaslamp involvement.  5th is closed but that's for covid.  There are attendees eating there but once you wander off of 5th it's mostly locals as on any normal Saturday.  They are there watching sports on TV.

I wasn't there, but according to Parks and Con, John Cena made an appearance as Peacemaker.

That's the comic-con spirit.  I wish there was a clapping emoji.

No line this afternoon. By the way, who's bright idea was it to make us wear a paper wrist band from today through Sunday? I doubt mine will make it to Friday.

Astonishingly, mine managed to make it through the entire weekend.

I'm tempted to leave it on just to see how long it will last.

I was very glad to throw my wristband in the trash on Sunday afternoon!

Sorry I wasn't at the Sunday night get-together. We had to fly out Sunday early evening because my husband is working today. Fortunately, despite being a buy airport travel day, everything went smoothly!

From left to right: Jackie Estrada, William R. Lund, Dave Clark, Scott Shaw! and Mike Towry.  Without these wonderful people (And a few others, like Ken Krueger, Shel Dorf, Richard Alf and Barry Alfonso)  there would be no San Diego Comic Con.  They are the ones who started it all in the basement of the U.S. Grant hotel in March of 1970.

I saved mine.  It's a collectors item.

Exactly!  The first thing my 7 year old (who was really worried the wristband would somehow magically disintegrate while he was sleeping or taking a shower) did was rip it off the moment we got inside our condo Sunday evening  :P

Thank you so much everyone for sharing your reviews and photos. Really looks like everyone was having a lot of fun. So hopeful we all get to see each other again next year. Really appreciate all the photos, swag discussion, panels, thanks so much.

Alyssa - you look so cute and fun at the Labrea offsite - was it great to be able to go to an offsite without waiting for six hours like that GOT year?

It's December 1st.  We now have just 120 days until WonderCon 2022!

I hope we're able to go!  Oh Anaheim, I've missed you so!

Yes! Wed through Sun. I'll hit Disneyland Thursday. Stayed there in 2019. Almost as close as the Hilton.

Had just enough points to book 4 nights at the Hyatt Place.
