Title: What was your forum username inspired by?
Post by: Zero on May 06, 2013, 03:28:57 AM
This is a minor tie-in to the Introductions/Welcome Thread (http://www.friendsofcci.com/forum/index.php?topic=218.0), and I thought it would be a fun way to get to know to your fellow forum members.  If you haven't introduced yourself yet, please do so!  We'd love to hear more about you.

Think of this as an experimental thread to see how it goes... ^-^ If it goes sour or a bit too off-topic, I'll close it.

What is the origin of your forum username?  How did you come up with it, or what was it inspired by?

If you use your real first name as your forum username, do you have an alternate username that you normally use elsewhere?  What's the story behind that other username?

(Or, perhaps, you're a superhero in disguise and therefore reluctant to tell us. ;p)

Besides my Nerdom, I'm a big Detroit Redwings fan. Their captain, and the player who was instrumental in turning them around was Steve Yzerman. And back when I used to ride my dirtbike, and didn't have to worry about getting hurt, I had a Yamaha Yz 450F. Back in the dial up days, all the good Star Wars Aol screen names were taken. So I turned to my other hobbies for help, and Yzrfan was born.

Angology was my Guitar Hero band name-it's usually not taken, so I started using it for screen names (sometimes I have to settle for Angelalogy when it is taken).

Mine comes from the Gatchaman/Battle of the Planets fandom. My favorite character from Battle of the Planets is named Princess. But when I first started out joining a fan group (on Yahoo Groups) obviously all usernames with anything resembling 'Princess' were gone. The character's name in Gatchaman is Jun. As part of the show, the characters transform into superheroes. In Battle of the planets, they say, 'transmute' to transform. So I went with 'Transmute Jun', using the name from the original series and the transformation word from the American version.

So... basically it doesn't make any sense unless you're into Gatchaman, but that's who I am, now.

ETA   Zero, we have yet too hear from you. *poke*

World War Z.

In the book, they're the humans who have psychological breakdowns and start acting like the zombies. It's a really neat concept and I'm scared to see how they handle it in the movie (if they touch on it at all).

Abunai was the name of my favorite WoW toon - a troll rogue. I started playing her when I was living in Japan studying comic arts in Kyoto, so I went with a Japanese word for her name. Abunai means 'dangerous'.

It's my username on almost everything now.

Yep, I picked it up on my recent re-read in anticipation of the movie. It's obscure enough that I often find it available, but well known enough that it still gets recognized.

Adapa was a Mesopotamian leader who was tricked by a Demi god to give up immortal life.  http://www.ancient.eu.com/article/216/

Yeah, too much information, I know. I majored in archaeology in college.

Dr .Bloodenstuff was a character I created for the Halloween parties my wife & I throw annually. We're big into Halloween. Its based loosely on Dr. Scratchansniff from Animaniacs. My avatar is me dressed up as Dr. Bloodenstuff. Had I given it more thought, I maybe should've used my Twitter handle, UntrueBeliever, since its more comic book related.

Mine was when I was 22, I worked with some old friends from high school at Little Caesar's Pizza to pay for college. We were off the clock after the store had closed, and they'd started drinking; one of them looks at me and goes, "Dude...you look just like that sidekick character from the Jolly Green Giant commercials. What was his name? Little Sprth...Dude. I'm drunk...Sprz...Sprzout! Yeah, that's it!"

The name stuck, so I started using it for my name on BBSes, on forums, etc. Nobody ever uses that spelling, so I'm pretty safe knowing it's not taken. :)

tehlilone = teh lil one

teh because I got in the habit of typing teh when I typed too fast on AIM

lil because I used to be the smallest/shortest person among my friends (I'm only 5' tall... altho I've grown sideways  :-[)

one because... well there's only one me... and I am teh lil one

I continue to use it because I find it amusing. It's kind of creepy to admit but if you google "tehlilone" you'll find mostly only accounts made by myself. Every once in a while you get a random person but I'd say 95% of the stuff out there for tehlilone is me :) It's an alias I've been using since middle school.

Dogberry has been one of my favourite Shakespeare creations from studying English Lit. at school - I knew the reference and I'm glad that it's actually that you've drawn from. 'Boring old bint'? Hardly.

oneroomdisco is a remnant of my days in J-Pop fandom (which due to busyness/my faves taking breaks/starting to suck/etc, I've mostly fallen out of).  It's one of my favorite songs (http://youtu.be/hO6zD7yiMd8) by Perfume, despite the fact that I'll probably never get it over how deceptive the first twenty seconds are (I still really, really want the song promised by those twenty seconds).

I'm a band teacher/musician and my primary instrument is percussion/drums.  A LONG time ago, when AOL ruled the world, a colleague of mine, also a percussionist, used the AOL username of vibe 2100, so when I started a hotmail mail account I used perc as an abbreviation of 'percussion,' and stole my friends psuedo-arbitrarily chosen number of "2100."  Since so many forums utilize email accounts, I usually just use "perc2100" as a username as an easy way to a) remember the username and b) remember which email account is associated with the forum.  In more professional-setting forums and organizations I use my more formal emails, which typically revolve around my name, and I use the 'hotmail' account & username for the more fun forums.

My long-time moniker is from my favorite Sony Playstation arcade game - "Bust-A-Groove".  My alter ego is Hiro, a narcissistic disco-loving character. He lives in a costly tiny apartment where he works with his computer until Saturday night, where his playboy antics really take off. Don't even begin to try to match his Saturday night standards-he is truly one of a kind. His favorite word is "Split".

The characters are, essentially, clean versions of the club kids you keep seeing pop up on various daytime talk shows. You've got girls in cat suits, a disco dancer, and a gun-toting lunatic named Strike. A few changes have been made in this domestic release. Strike, while he still manages to sneak two pistols past the doorman, must have had his flask confiscated at the door, 'cause he now packs a can of soda in the small of his back. Also, that pesky no-smoking law has kept Hiro's habit from appearing in the US version.

Fun fact: "Syndicate Product" was the original name of K-Tel Records!

Um, anyone else old enough on here to remember K-Tel Records? Twenty songs crammed onto one LP for a low price of $5.98? Lousy sound quality but all the current hits? They were the "That's What I Call Music" collections of the day. Look it up, kids!

Oh - and you also cleaned your K-Tel LPs with the Ronco Record Cleaner!

I remember K-Tel records.

My name stems from an old interest in Lucrezia Borgia -or at least the popular image of her as this sinister Renaissance duchess, sneaking around and poisoning her husbands and enemies (my "alter ego" -I'm utterly harmless in real life!).  That, and that I graduated from high school in 1988 (why I'm old enough to remember K-Tel records).

Jopari is from the "His Dark Materials" (aka Golden Compass) Series of books. Despite being a Christian, I liked the books (minus the Anti God & Religion stuff of course)

The Character Jopari was the tribal name for one of the main characters father. He found a portal from our earth into another earth and ended up living with some tribal people in the north arctics. The Tribe people couldn't pronounce his name "John Parry", and simply called him "Jopari". He eventually became a Shaman with power over the weather and stuff.

I like shamans, like the name, like the book, and my real name starts with J as well.

Bump for new forum members.

Thanks Transmute for finding the this thread.  :)

lol Nice! :D

In my spare time I also do a Brazilian martial arts called capoeira (for almost 10 years now). We get nicknames in portuguese.  Mine is "Jujuba" ... it means "jelly bean" or "candy."  SD for "san diego" because "jujuba" is always taken. So I've just gotten used to have jujubaSD for my capoeira email, and handle on social networks/forums.

Mine comes from a book series called the Obernewtyn Chronicles by Isobelle Carmody, who is an Australian author. It's a post-apocalyptic story, after a nuclear holocaust. There are mutants (called 'misfits') as a result and one of the abilities (telepathy) is referred to as 'farseeking' and those with it as 'farseekers'. :D

I'm kind of attached to the series - I started reading when I was eight, and it was first published the year I was born. Having said that, it still isn't finished! After the fourth book I decided not to continue with it until it is done, as the author has a habit of  getting distracted and starting other projects.  :P

Sounds like GRR Martin... or Robert Jordan, who up and died before finishing his series!

Yeah it was originally meant to be a trilogy...up to 7 books now. She's said the next one is the last, but I'm pretty sure she said that about the last couple too before they got published and then it was like 'oh actually...there's another one to go!'.

I think it is actually more books in some countries though - I remember hearing that a couple of them got split up into two because they were so massive.

"Angel" comes from my love of Castiel, the angel from Supernatural.  The K is a shortened form of my Twitter account, but the word isn't really something that I use outside of Supernatural fandom so I shorten it to "K" everywhere else.  Now "Angel K" has become my pen name.  People actually know me by that now.  It's weird.

So we were just back from SDCC in 2012 and my daughter had bought a heavy robe that looks like the Tardis.  She was standing next to me as I was joining and I looked at her and said I'm a Tardis Mom.  So now I'm stuck with it.  :P

She is currently working on Elsa from Frozen (thus the glitter) and is working on a design of a "warrior" Elsa, plus she is doing Poison Ivy and something from Pokemon.  She recently made a Princess Bubblegum dress with a cute little Peppermint Butler purse.  I hope I said that right!

Last summer she was in the big group photo in Entertainment Weekly magazine from the Batman meet up!  She was Poison Ivy and her friend was Harley Quinn.

I'll wear a couple of my usual Gatchaman costumes, and probably my Penny costume (from Dr. Horrible) since I'll likely go to the singalong again. I'm working on a new Daenerys costume as well (blue dress and cape from season 3).

There's a discussion on this year's cosplay here.

My local comic shop has loads of Pops, like huge displays of them. If anyone runs up against the wall, let me know and I can check if they have the character.

Bionic Six.

I am a fan and basically, back when the MMO game City of Heroes came out, I created a character called Bionic 7 whose story was after years of being shut down  (I implied some tragedy befell the Bionic Six...but left it open to interpretation), Special Projects Labs reinstituted its bionics program which resulted in the birth of Bionic 7 (after the original Bionic Six...he was #7).  The handle stuck.

Come to think of it...its about time for a Bionic Six refresh!

It works since I am a Jem and the Holograms FAN. Talk to me about any and all cartoons Circa 1983 to 1987. After that Nintendo and Nickelodeon took over.

GnomeOnAHill is a new username I'm trying out. I love garden gnomes and have a little collection of them. So I just figured it was fitting to finally implement my fondness into a name.

One of my other favorite usernames that I have on Steam is PlatycornGoodness ... I made a Platypus-Unicorn hybrid mix because I feel like it would be a pretty kickass animal. Subsequently most people just refer to me on there as 'Platy' so its kinda cool.

I used to work with a guy named Zane, who wore many a MegaDeath t-shirts. I would always comment on that, and made sure he listened to the lyrics because David Mustaine has some great things to say. After a few months of me saying "Hey, alright MegaDeath" Zane started replying "Hey alright MegaDoug". Then my daughter got me a big sticker that says "MegaDoug" that now graces the back of the MegaVan. If you've seen it, you'll know it ain't small. I love corgis.  I wanted to get one ever since I saw Ein in the anime Cowboy Bebop.

I was born in the early 80's so I love all the tv shows, cartoons and movies from that era (GI Joe).

My last name is Koh, so I've always loved inserting it into my screen names (Kohmando, Kohbra, Kohpacetic, Kohlossus, PsyKoh)

I love mash-ups, thus Corgi Kohmander was born.

When I was looking for an AIM screen name, "Sefton" "Sefton01" and "Sefton97" were already taken.  Out of desperation, I tried 42 from Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.  That worked, and I've been sefton42 since.

A year or two later I was actually contacted by a Nate Sefton who wanted my screen name since 42 was his jersey number.  But I'd had it for awhile already and I wasn't going to switch to sefton43 at that point.

I use it to this day because it reminds me of the carefree days where all my friends became family.   We are still friends to this day :)

I've had the same username for virtually everything since 1999. If you remember the show Laverne & Shirley from the '70s, it is the club that the main characters were in when they were in high school. It comes with a snazzy song and everything. The show aired on Nick at Nite when I was in junior high and immediately became my favorite.

My daughter inadvertently gave me the nickname Straightline one Christmas around 2001 or 2002, when she was about 4 or 5 years old. We have a tradition in my family where we like to open gifts one at a time, and take our time to "ooh and ahh" over each opening. At some point, we asked the youngest child to play the role of 'elf' delivering gifts, which worked great because younger kids usually feel more involved and less antsy when put to work being elves. (Put them to work and they’re happy about it, go figure.) Now the elf has been part of our tradition for many years.

This particular year, my dad asked my daughter to deliver a small square box wrapped in red paper. I should mention that I'm named after my father and grandfather -- my dad is junior and I am the third. On this particular gift, my dad had addressed it, "To: III, Love: Jr."  When my daughter picked up the gift, she stared at the label for a minute, furrowed her brow, and then exclaimed: “this one doesn’t make any sense! It just says straightline, straightline, straightline, with a straightline on top and a straightline on bottom!”  Everybody laughed, and the nickname stuck.  And the number 3 is my favorite number not only because of the above, but also because I was born at 3:33am. However I don’t usually add 3 to my username unless someone else has already taken straightline, which does not appear to be the case on this forum. So… whoops.

Holy smokes, perhaps I wrote too much to explain my username!

So, mine is probably the most embarrassing name origin.  It is the same username I have used since I created my first email address when I was in the 7th grade.

The sprite part comes because for some strange reason, when i would drink Sprite I would get very hyper...even though it contains no caffeine. I eventually grew out of it, but from like 5th-8th grade my friends thought it was hilarious & would egg me on to drink sprite when we were all together. So, when it came time to create an email account, my pre-teen brain thought spritegirl was an awesome idea.

The 24 is my birthday & the 7 is my lucky number. Plus, by making it 24_7 it's also kind of a play on me being spritegirl all the time.

So, since that was my first email account, it stuck, and I use that username for pretty much all of the accounts I have online.

I'm a runner. I love running. I've done 36 marathons in the past 12 years and have averaged 2200+ miles each of the past 6 years. And every year I've gotten faster and faster. In fact, I tend to run the second half of a race faster than the first half. Hence "accelerate".

Hikanteki is the Japanese word for pessimistic. I adopted the name about 15 years ago when I had a pessimistic outlook. That no longer applies (although alternate meanings of the word include cynic/realist, which do apply), but I still like the handle and it isn't that common, so I kept it.

Ha, I have a similar story.  My username comes from when I was in 6th or 7th grade also, way back in the early 90's when we had dialup AOL and they had a short username character limit.  Back then I was super into fighter jets and I loved the F-15 Eagle, which was designed to combat the Mig-25 Foxbat.  Hence, foxbat(killer) was born.  I've kept it ever since.  It's been my username/email for like 23 years at this point.

My first hotmail address is perc2100
Perc being short for 'Percussion' (I'm a HS band teacher/percussionist/drummer).  I think the '2100' came about because perc. was already taken or something and I needed a number combo and 2100 seemed simple to remember.  I've used "perc2100" as a user name in other forums for consistency as well as easy-to-remember since it's based on my hotmail that I likely used to register (it's a mostly spammy account now but I check it regularly still).  I'm on a lot of music educators/performers boards and groups so it makes sense from that regard.

Every year I tell myself I’m gonna get in a run at SDCC, like early morning before the convention opens, and 14 straight years now, this has yet to happen 🤣

Because of this, every year during SDCC is my longest stretch without running for the year.

I still like your family's solution better than mine's. We have a bunch of men with the first name Raymond (including me) and they have us all go by our middle names. So family gatherings are easy but everything else is a hassle :) (Why they just don't use Raymond as a middle name I'll never understand.)

I named him Jasper and he became my mascot. My twitter handle, travel blog, gaming names, etc all ended up jasperthecactus because it's never taken and easy for me to remember. He died several years ago, but the name has stuck. I will forevermore be jasperthecactus.

SynXacK  = Syn Ack.  The internet as you know it functions using a communication protocol often refereed to as TCP/IP ( Transmission control protocol / internet protocol ).  It was developed decades ago and is still a fundamental core component in how computers talk to each other on a large network such as the internet.  When a connection is being established between 2 entities on the internet, IE your smart phone, computer, webserver or anything with access to the internet, they go thru what is called the 3 handshake protocol.  It's a series of messages sent back and forth between devices to create a communication channel between the 2.  Syn/Ack/Fin are the 3 message types used and are short for Sync, Acknowledge and Finish.

I've used this handle for just about everything for 15 years about.  And essentially the computer talk equivalent of saying "Hey, how you doing? ...great and yourself?"

I didn't want numbers so I tried to come up with something unique. Me being a history need, I knew the character was based off of Victorian hat makers who used mercury in their diyes and developed issues because of. Well if you're familiar with the periodic table, mercury is Hg. Thus Hgmaddhatter a.k.a. Mercury Mad Hatter was born.
