Learn all about self-publishing from someone who's been in comics publishing for more than 25 years. Dave Elliott co-founded Radical Studios, where he served as both the co-publisher and editor-in-chief. Recently Dave relaunched his company ATOMEKA, started with his partner Garry Leach, as an imprint at Titan Books. His first graphic novels series released under this deal are The Weirding Willows, and Odyssey and revivals of his two anthologies, A1 and Monster Massacre.

This year's Saturday morning cartoons Happy Hour takes a routine expedition down memory lane to Sid & Marty Krofft's live-action classic Land of the Lost. The panel will provide a take on how a show is created, all the elements you need to take into consideration, and why the idea of it being about this or that would be too expensive. Eisner Award winner Mark Waid (Irredeemable, Incorruptible), psychologist Patrick O'Connor (Comicspedia), and therapist Josué Cardona (Geek Therapy) discuss Waid's BOOM! Studios titles Irredeemable and Incorruptible and how the stories are a reflection of our struggles with doubt, mental illness, and others' expectations. Panelists will explore the protagonists' troubled lives and share the stories of people who have experienced real benefits from these fictional tales. Additionally, panelists will discuss the creative process of these works, including how comic creators understand good, evil, and the expression of this dichotomy through superheroes and supervillains in comic books.

As with efforts to better represent women in comics have paid off in terms of new readers, can more accurate portrayals of mental disorders unlock a new demographic? Forensic psychiatrists H. Eric Bender, M.D. and Praveen R. Kambam, M.D. (Broadcast Thought) discuss why accurate mental health depictions matter and how less stigmatizing and more creative representations can benefit both patients and publishers alike. Gail Simone (Batgirl, Red Sonja) will talk about her efforts to accurately represent people with mental disorders and her consultation with clinical psychologist Andrea Letamendi, Ph.D. (Under the Mask,The Arkham Sessions) on the depiction of posttraumatic stress disorder and its treatment in DC Comics' Batgirl. Clinical psychologist Janina Scarlet, Ph.D. (Superhero Therapy) will share moving stories of patients inspired by accurate comic book depictions of mental disorders in their recovery from mental illnesses. Forensic psychiatrist Vasilis K. Pozios, M.D. (Broadcast Thought) will discuss his short story about a stigmatized superhero with bipolar disorder, Aura, published in RISE: Comics Against Bullying from Northwest Press. Attorney Jeff Trexler (The Beat, The Comics Journal) will moderate, contextualizing the changing landscape of mental health depictions in comics with the complicated history between comic books and mental health.

Besides TV, he has worked on the Batman animated series (2005) and the fourth Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated film. An advocate for comic colorists, McCaig started and moderates Gutter Zombie, an online forum for working colorists. Remembering the Golden Age with Irwin Hasen

From the Golden Age of Comics, with his work onWonder Woman, Green Lantern, and Wildcat (which he created with Batman co-creator Bill Finger) to his three decades on the Dondi syndicated strip to his many years as a teacher at the Kubert School, Irwin Hasen made an important mark on comics. When he passed away in March at the advanced age of 96, his friends and fans were nonetheless shocked that this force of nature was stilled. Celebrating Hasen's art and life are David Armstrong (American Association of Comicbook Collectors), Michael Uslan (producer of the Batman films), Jim Salicrup (Papercutz editor-in-chief), Chelle Mayer (granddaughter of legendary editor Sheldon Mayer), Arie Kaplan (From Krakow to Krypton: Jews and Comic Books) and moderator Danny Fingeroth (The Stan Lee Universe). Clips from a documentary about Irwin will be shown.

Comics Arts Conference #11: Teaching Comics

Now that comics are beginning to be accepted in the classroom, how can teachers best use the medium to further students' education through comic books? Rebecca Thompson (American Physical Society) and David Ellis (American Physical Society), the author and illustrator of the Spectra: The Original Laser Superhero series, discuss the artistic challenges specific to creating scientifically accurate physics comics and how to entertain and educate at the same time. Kevin Degnan (El Camino College) discusses the challenges of providing ethical and reliable student access to comics in the classroom, and explores how teachers might navigate the difficulties of finding rare comics without piracy. Rich Shivener (University of Cincinnati) examines the effectiveness of replacing writers' memos and reflections with comics as a form of teaching and assignment evaluation in the composition classroom.
