Does CCI gobble up all the rooms for a hotel, including the high-end suites? If you're rolling in cash, I imagine you could book one of those $$$$ suites directly through the hotel, yeah? Or I wonder if CCI takes those and reserves them for VIPs. Now that I think about it, I wonder if they do that for the Pendry.

I don't know about the suites, but you can often book rooms through many of the hotels directly at HUGELY inflated prices.  Like, there have been MGH rooms (just regular rooms) available for over $900/night.  I've seen this for MMM and BFH as well.  And yes, some people would rather pay that than worry about the Hotel Sale.

That's smart. Personally, if I can't be right close by downtown I would always choose Little Italy. Especially now with so much great food. If you do end up there, make certain to check how close you are to the hotels in the area that are on the shuttle routes.

Thanks! Funny thing is that I'll be traveling to Italy in May of next year, so staying at a hotel in the Little Italy section of SD for CC would be perfect! And thanks for the intel about nearby hotel shuttles. Perhaps if I'm too tired to walk after a long day, I'll look into that. But otherwise, I'll look at the walk as exercise and a good way to decompress from all the crowds at the convention center.  8)

Stayed in Little Italy my first year at SDCC.  It was not bad at all.  I did the walk to the convention center the first day, but the return is all up hill.  Even 11 years ago, it was too much for me.
It's easy to catch the trolley, though, and the Doubletree has a shuttle stop you can use.
Good luck getting badges next year.

Similar story here. I stayed at the Radisson -- which is now DoubleTree -- back at my third con in 2005. I remember making the walk on the first day, and I was a sweaty, tired mess by the time I reached the convention center. After that, it was all shuttle.

Now, I think Westin Gaslamp is about as far as I'd be willing to walk without ever considering the shuttle. Downtown hotels beyond that, it'd probably be a mix of walking & shuttles / trolleys.

Wow, that is super scummy of them. If the rates were wrong, they should raise them, but honor the previous bookings. Not classy.

(And now I'm thinking, 'Stay classy, San Diego.')

My backup is at a hostel, I hope they don't pull the same thing on me. Sorry about that, hopefully you find something else? Are their new prices doubled or something?

Certainly not surprising though.
I noticed this morning a VRBO downtown for around $200 a night during SDCC 2019.
I'm sure that this rate will never be honored.

There are some hotels with rooms right now on 3rd party sites, just in case you want to hold something until the lottery next year.
