Title: SDCC@HOME general Chat, Virtual SD Comic-Con Programming?
Post by: perc2100 on April 14, 2020, 01:36:32 PM
In a recent SD Union Tribune article there is a brief mention that CCI is exploring the idea of "virtual Comic-Con:" an online experience featuring some sort of streaming & social media platforms.  Here's the article: https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/business/tourism/story/2020-04-10/canceled-conventions-costing-san-diego-203m-so-far

Here's the specific blurb about online Comic-Con (that may-or-may-not happen):
Quote
Comic-Con said Thursday it is still weighing its options and hopes to make an announcement soon. It is also exploring the possibility of an “online component” should the convention not take place, said spokesman David Glanzer.
I don't want to debate the good & bad: I think at this point we all know Comic-Con isn't going to happen in 2020 AS WE KNOW IT.  I don't want to get into policy since at least as far as we, the general public, know this is little more than "spit-balling" and we have no clue what CCI's policy will be in regards to the cancelation of physical SDCCI 2020, badge returns, etc.

What I _DO_ want to talk about are programming ideas.  I know of several arts & education (by trade as a music educator married to an arts education administrator) conventions that are being canceled in their physical medium and will instead take place online at a substantially cheaper rate (one I know if is typically $1200 and this summer will be $40 for an online version).

Instead of debating what we don't know about yet, or getting too depressed about the 'Promised Land' being canceled in the from we know it, let's have fun talking about what _COULD_ actually happen for us just 3+ months from today!

So what do you a) think is do-able & possible programming-wise b) what would you like to see?

* Autographs?!  Why not!  Obviously they'd be pre-signed and could still be 'raffled off' either for charity or via the good ol' online portal
* Panles?! Seems easy enough given how much the world will have been familiarized w/Zoom and other live-streaming services.  Some artists & companies can pre-record "panels" with pre-determined questions from a moderator of some sort.  Footage can be shown via encryption or whatnot: heck, nowadays many companies release footage immediately following the panel anyway so that might not even be an issue.  Fans could live-tweet questions, or maybe even use some other sort of live-meeting streaming app to ask a question from talent.
* Meet & Greets? Why not?!  Using Zoom or something organizers could set up something were online portal winners can win a pre-signed poster or something and get 15 or 20 seconds to say hi and get a personal chat with talent.  Would this take work, planning, etc?  Yes: a lot.  Can it be done? I think so
* Exclusives? Again, why not?!  Funco sold their WonderCon exclusives online last week to anyone there's no reason why other companies already planning (and potentially manufacturing) exclusives couldn't go about their business and do online sales: even keep it w/in the online portal to keep it truly exclusive to SDCCI badge-holders
* Artist Alley?  YES!  Artists could still sell their stuff, take sketch commissions, etc. online.  It would be more cumbersome, of course, and if you wanted, say, Marv Wolfman's signature you'd have to "settle" maybe for a poster of his choosing vs your Crisis On Infinite Earths #1 (which he signed for me at WonderCon 2019) but it's still something!
* Masquerade Ball? I think this could be done virtually.

What else am I missing as far as programming-wise?  Again, all of this would take meticulous planning, cooperation from all talent & companies involved, etc. but I think this could work pretty awesome.  Not 100% ideal, but maybe 100% ideal in the times of a lethal pandemic.  I've maintained for the last month and a half that as a local San Diego resident I'm going to feel like I NEED a celebration & release come late July.  This can be just as awesome, and not risk any lives!  There are going to be a plethora of changes when we come out of our social-distancing into a New World, and I think the sooner we realize things are going to be radically different (even if just for the next year & change until there's a vaccine), the better our piece-of-mind.

So: what would you like to see in a virtual Comic-Con?!

Many of these things have happened at virtual cons that have already occurred due to covid.  The autographs don't have to be pre-signed.  You do a video chat with the celeb and they sign it during the video chat.  Then they mail it to you.  That video chat is the meet and greet.

There has already been a VR offsite at comic-con.  It happened a few years ago.  It was basically a VR mini-con.  They had panels, they had celebs to chat with, they had all that con stuff.

Virtual Hall H, and more with no lines.  24/7 exhibit hall and artist alley. The ability to be chosen to ask live questions and such. I would definitely be interested, and pay.

There is no way I'd go if it were virtual. That would be the end of SDCC for me.

I would go do a virtual if that was the ONLY choice for this year, but, of course would prefer in person-- as always.

Not my first choice, but probably better than nothing. I'd check it out. I might pay money for it (but not anything close to $300) if it helps keeps things running. I'm more likely to pay if they mail a badge and program book...including a swag bag would be nice too. In 2015 I couldn't go but I bought those things from eBay.

Yeah, I’d pay too if I got some of those items as well. I’m a runner, and quite a few cancelled races offered virtual races. You run on your own (can even be an at-home treadmill), send in your time, and they’ll mail you a swag bag with tshirt / medal / other goodies. Yup, you’re basically paying for the swag. It’d be similar here where I might check out a few virtual panels, but I would be more or less paying for the novelty badge / bag / whatever other items.

I think half or more of the things listed would work out fine for a virtual con. The easiest is exclusives. I never understood the point of waiting hours in lines to buy products that could be easily shipped to people instead. I understand why for buyers who really want these products but I never understood the point of it for the sellers since it seems like an inefficient way to sell your product. With the artist gallery, it might be harder for artists to sell their items but it can still be done.

With the other half, the panels, autographs and meet & greets, I think the meet & greets and autographs part could work. Mailing autographs to fans is easy to do. I think trying to efficiently run the Zoom meet & greets would mean less fans talking to the celebs but maybe the conversations could be longer and that would be cooler that way. 15-20 second chats would be too short, each fan could probably chat for 3-5 minutes instead which actually would make the virtual con experience possibly better than the actual CCI experience since the CCI m&gs tend to be the 15-20 sec type.

I think panels are the part that seem the least worthwhile of a virtual con. At least to me, anyway. The main appeal of comic con panels is seeing the celebs in person. When celebs promote their projects, they do interviews and participate in general panels all the time and we can watch these interviews and panels online easily. There's really nothing special about a virtual con panel compared to these typical interviews and panels.

I think a virtual con is a fantastic way for SDCC to provide content to fans while they're unable to provide the in-person convention.  I can't even imagine the amount of pressure they're under now, with the con being such a big part of so many businesses' and individual's livelihood.  I'll appreciate whatever they can do to help the vendors, etc., while providing all of us with at least a bit of programming while we make our way through this tough time.

I know CCI isn't perfect, and we all hate the hotel sale and having feedback ignored at the talkback session, but they're clearly in uncharted waters and doing the best they can.  And I can't imagine they won't either refund or rollover badges in addition to whatever they do virtually.  And I'd be happy to pay a fee to participate in a virtual con.  Not $300, but if I can provide some funding to assist in their efforts, and to help them return in future years, I'm good with that.

I agree about seeing celebs in person.  That's why I loved Conival so much.  The celebs were living room close.

At comic-con though, in a big room seeing them as more than a blurry smudge off in the distance is only for people in the first few rows.  Especially in Hall H.  Most people in Hall H watch the panel on one of the screens.  I find it particularly funny that people take selfies of themselves with the screen in the background.  No offense to anyone here that does that. ;)

So how is watching the panels virtually that much different from watching it on a screen in a big hall?  They could set up something in VR where you are watching the panel on a big VR screen surrounded by other people watching it in VR.  People watch movies in VR like that already.  The effect is convincing including shushing people.  You can also mute them but that takes away from the group experience.

Personally, since I'm at the offsites all day, I watch a lot of the panels after the fact at home anyways.

If they charge for it, I very much doubt it will cost close to $300.  $30 would be on the high side.  The cost to do all this would be much lower.  At the same time, the audience can be much bigger than the 100,000 people that can go to San Diego for comic-con.  Lower fixed cost spread over a larger audience.

I'm glad people are coming around.  When I brought up virtual comic-con a few weeks ago, people were not enthusiastic.

It’s a world of difference. Watching panels in a room full of hundreds-to-thousands of fans and feeling the excitement in the room, actually being in the same room with the guests and hearing their voice in person even if you’re not in the first few rows (not every room is Hall H...and even B20 near the back isn’t bad) and in many cases seeing first to fans footage or episodes on a much bigger screen, or on multiple much bigger screens like they have in most of the big rooms. Of course, if they can set something up in actual VR that will get closer to this than just streaming.

It is night and day. I come for the whole experience: the hotel, the waiting in Hall H line, the food, the cosplay, the people, the jostling to get a better seat. Seeing a panel is but one tiny part of everything.

After reading the other SDCC cancellation thread, it did make me wonder: why would Hollywood studios participate in an exclusive con? At this point, the studios have lost a lot of money not being able to release their movies. I would expect them to want to mass promote their movies instead of keeping content exclusive for specific comic con fans. Why bother with celeb meet & greets and autograph giveaways to comic con fans then they can open these contests and giveaways up to fans worldwide? Same with exclusive panels when they can hold a general panel and put it on Youtube and allow everyone to watch?

Branding.  In pop culture the SDCC brand pulls a lot of weight.  Also maintaining a mutually beneficial relationship.  Sooner or later, there will be another comic-con at the convention center.  But they don't need to be exclusive.  They never are.  Studios promote their products across as many outlets as they can.  Even that "exclusive" comic-con clip is on youtube shortly.

I guess that's what confuses me. If the studio participations in a virtual SDCC are not exclusive, then why would we regular attendees want to pay for this virtual comic con?

Panels is one thing. That is doable virtually. But how they going to do the rest of it? Are they going to have the Funko and other lotteries virtual? Would they set up a storefront for every vendor? Would they honor the badge days? Sounds like a cluster%@#$ to me. Swag and offsite events would be gone.

Most definitely not worth the badge price. And what about those with lousy or no internet connection?

The Funko lottery (or any popular vendor exclusive lottery) is probably just about the only thing that would work better virtually, in my opinion. And as much as it may be a cluster, I don’t think anyone can argue that the in-person Funko/Hasbro/etc booths aren’t a cluster either.

Most people have internet. If they don’t, why would this be SDCC’s problem? Going to SDCC requires internet use as well (to buy/coordinate badges, get email with barcode, book hotels, etc)

I really don't understand why people keep thinking that CCI will keep the money people paid for comic-con and then just give them a virtual one instead.  I think that virtual comic-con will either be much cheaper or free.

Why's that?  We got swag in the mail last year even with real comic-con.  There have been virtual offsites before.  ELE who puts on a bunch of offsites at comic-con has already announced their virtual mini-con.  Some of the offsites could be done virtually since they have sizeable VR experiences.  Everything from the HBO one last year to the Blade Runner one to the Mr. Robot one To the Mr. Mercedes one to the Legendary one from years gone by.  I even ask if I can just do it at home since being a germophobe, I don't want to use a headset some else just sweated all over.  Legendary did have disposable face protectors.  Even with those, in the age of covid, there's no way I would share a VR headset with anyone.

For those hoping for a big virtual SDCC... you might look at what they did for WonderCon. They posted about it, what, Friday night? They did exactly one panel.

I think we'll get things, and more than we got for WonderCon, but I'd temper my expectations. I also personally think it's much more likely EW or even the studios will do cool virtual panels than CCI will.

I think Wondercon posted a bunch of old panels too, but it definitely wasn't a major web presence. And, sadly, there wasn't much follow through. They encouraged people to dress up at home and post pictures for their "cosplay contest", saying they would feature ten of them... it's been over a week and they haven't featured anyone.

Yes, they did post some old panels - but I mean only one 2020 panel.

As for the cosplay, to be fair, if you checked the tag, there were hardly any entries. They gave like NO notice on any of it though.

Souvenir Book

An Important Announcement Regarding the 2020 Comic-Con Souvenir Book

As you’ve probably heard, there will be no Comic-Con in 2020, but we’ll return in 2021! Click here for details.

However, we are still planning on doing the 2020 Souvenir Book as a downloadable PDF! If anything, this will mean your art will be seen by even more people. The PDF will be available on or around the original start date for Comic-Con 2020, July 23.

We’re going to extend our deadline for art and articles until Friday, May 1, 2020 at 11:59 PM. We appreciate everyone who has already sent in submissions for this year’s book, and we’ll be considering everything that has been sent for inclusion in the PDF, from January when we first made our announcement about this year’s anniversaries, to May 1, the extended deadline for submissions. As always, submission of a piece of art or an article is not a guarantee of placement in the book.

Stay tuned for more announcements and thank you for your submissions to the Souvenir Book.

There were a few hundred entries - including mine, which I spent a decent amount of time doing my makeup for - although admittedly most of them seemed to have been taken at previous cons instead of actually "at home".

But irregardless, it does drive home the point that while a good (or even great) "virtual" con might be possible, I don't know that CCI has the skillset to run one. As of this year at least.

Comic-Con Going Virtual For 2020

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/comic-con-going-virtual-2020-1294800

Quote
San Diego Comic-Con 2020 might not be happening, but that doesn’t mean that there won’t be a Comic-Con this year — it’s just that it’ll happen online, with organizers Comic-Con International teasing something called, simply, Comic-Con@Home 2020.

The virtual event was announced via YouTube video last week, with a teaser that promised “free parking, comfy chairs, personalized snacks, no lines” — something that, under traditional Comic-Con situations would sound like a dream. But Comic-Con@Home shouldn’t be considered this year’s incarnation of the traditional southern Californian pop culture show, according to show organizers.

"I don't think we've really thought of it in terms of a replacement for the show,” Comic-Con International’s David Glanzer told The Hollywood Reporter via email. “I think it is an iteration that we hope will convey some of the excitement of Comic-Con in whatever format we and our stakeholders can create. We are reaching out to various entities who are usually involved in the physical show to see if, and how best, we can incorporate them into an online version.”

San Diego Comic-Con was set to take place July 23-26, but was canceled last month. Even though COVID-19 has been closing down conventions since March’s Emerald City Comic-Con, Glanzer said that Comic-Con at Home wasn’t something that CCI had been developing for awhile; instead, it’s been a surprise addition to the organization’s calendar.

“When we had to make the difficult decision to postpone WonderCon Anaheim [in April], we were a little taken aback. We never had to outright halt production on an event in the works. Then, after a time, we began to think about how we could still engage fans who wanted the experience of the WonderCon community. So the WonderCon@Home initiative was born,” he explained. “We still hoped we could have the [San Diego] Comic-Con event this summer and really hadn't spent a lot of time exploring an online component. Especially when we were already engaged in WonderCon@Home and Comic-Con Museum@Home.”

WonderCon@Home featured a mix of virtual panels and archive material from previous shows posted in the week surrounding the originally scheduled in-person event, while Comic-Con Museum@Home includes video and downloadable content centered around exhibits and material found inside the Balboa Park location. It’s unclear if either of these examples will be models for Comic-Con@Home, with details of the virtual event remaining under wraps — for one very good reason: CCI has yet to decide exactly what Comic-Con@Home is going to look like.

“There are several different ideas floating about [concerning the format and timing of the event] but we are still in the nuts-and-bolts planning phase, which is why our tease about Comic-Con@Home was deliberately void of any specifics,” Glanzer said. “But there are certainly a great many options from which to choose.”

Whatever the event ends up being, it’ll likely inform the future of Comic-Con as a whole, Glanzer believes. “I imagine there will be an online component to all our shows from now on,” he said. “It's interesting that the Comic-Con Museum, which is slated to open to the public in 2021, had always envisioned a virtual component. They've had to move things along a little faster than originally planned but I think there could be a permanent online element moving forward.”

More information about Comic-Con@Home 2020 is expected to be revealed in the coming weeks.

I watched the Katee Sackhoff Q&A today.  If CCI can do something like that during a virtual con, I would be satisfied.  I learned more about her and the production process than I ever did at a comic-con panel.

It's worth a viewing if you'd like insights on how the TV production process works.  She also talks about how they are going to spin up Another Life filming again in 2 months.  The thing I like most is seeing how her house is a mess like the rest of us.  The impression she gives off is that she is just a regular person with a job.  That job just happens to be in show business.  A far cry from the glamorous lives the studio's portrayed for their talent in the first half of the 20th century.  A far cry from the perfect lives many youtubers try to portray now.

Both of these guys are great.  Obviously with IDW being in San Diego both these guys have been around town over the years doing signings; IIRC Chris has given a lecture at the SDCCI Museum on the history of comics industry in San Diego (which CCI live-streamed successfully).
This will be awesome, I think!

Virtual con idea I doubt they do....use the portal that we would have had for Funko/hasbro/mattel/etc lottery to randomize who gets to buy their online exclusives, you know instead of selling them to just everyone.

For me it was a great way to celebrate a show that I’ve loved for years and that is sadly coming to an end. San Diego Comic-Con’s upcoming virtual event, Comic-Con@Home, will be almost entirely prerecorded, TheWrap has learned exclusively.

SDCC expects to run 300 to 400 online panels between July 23-26 and almost all of them will be pre-recorded by studios and networks and submitted in advance, a spokesperson for Comic-Con International told TheWrap Monday.

According to the representative, the organization does not currently “anticipate anything live” for Comic-Con@Home, but it is possible there will be “live elements to some programming.”

This means that fan Q&As, obviously, are out, though the spokesperson says some studios and shows have reached out to their communities via social media to ask for questions in advance.

This year’s San Diego Comic-Con was canceled in April due to the coronavirus pandemic, marking the first time the annual pop culture event won’t happen as planned in its 51-year history. In May, Comic-Con International revealed it would be holding a virtual con in lieu of the in-person event, with “personalized snacks, free parking and no lines,” among other lockdown-friendly perks.

The official schedule for Comic-Con@Home will begin rolling out this Thursday, two weeks ahead of the event, as is traditional for the in-person con as well. But a few studios and networks have already revealed which TV shows and movies they will be bringing and readers can find that list here.

This is disappointing news...almost nothing will be live? I was wondering and looking forward to seeing how they would pull off live events on a larger scale than other online events, and that is my answer.  It ain't happening.

Honestly, I'm kinda glad most of it isn't live. It means less chance for technical errors, or panels being Zoom Bombed depending on how they're doing things.

I'm also disappointed that it's not live.  Live streamed events have that extra special something that recorded events don't.  Just like in person live events, the panelists can respond to the audience if it's live.  That doesn't happen with prerecorded events.  It's not as fun.

I don't see why the scale would have been prohibitive.  The streams didn't have to go through a common point at CCI.  Scheduling would have been their biggest contribution. Then each panel could have been put on independently.  It's not hard to live stream on youtube.  Youtubers with 50 or 5000 or 500,000 subscribers do it all the time.  I'm sure the studios could have figured it out.

You can deal with it the same way that a heckler is dealt with at a live panel, it's even easier online.  A moderator mutes anyone causing trouble.  There are live streams on youtube all the time.  The technical issues have been worked out.  There aren't that many stream breakers.  Even if an occasional stream breaks, just move on to another stream.

Eh, I'm just happy we're even getting this many panels to begin with. I wasn't expecting much so I'll take what I can get. If that means they're already recorded to make it easier for everyone, including the guests who might now be stuck at home with family/kids, or getting back to actually filming, then so be it. This entire thing is hitting me hard right now, and I'm just trying to think/be positive about it.

I doubt they are gathering people together to record the panels.  That doesn't make sense.  So they are doing it the same way panels and streams have been done during this pandemic.  Everyone is at home and it's a video conference.  That's how Amazon did The Boys panel a few days ago.  So it would be just as easy to do it live as to record it.

Doing it live makes it an event.  Watching a recording just makes it another youtube video.

I never said they were gathering people somewhere to film? But if someone is filming at home, where kids/family are around, I don't mind/care if being recorded ahead of time helps with that. Not every panel is a panel with a celebrity who has someone to wrangle people. Some of these panels are going to have every day people who are still trying to balance everything going on in their lives on top of trying to take part in this.

It's hilarious that we're going back and forth about this when in the end, it doesn't matter. It is what it is.

I didn't say you did.  I was pointing out that whether it's live or recorded it's done the same way, from wherever they are.  Whether that's in a studio with a professional camera, at home with a webcam or someone stops walking on the street for a few minutes and steams in from their phone.  So it's all a matter of picking a time.  Whether that's now for a recorded session or a few days from now for a live event, it's the same amount of effort.  Either way kids have to be dealt with, people have to be wrangled.  Even before the pandemic, it was accepted that kids wander in and out of video conferences.  Many times that's the highlight of it.

GET READY FOR COMIC-CON@HOME 2020 PROGRAMMING! The Comic-Con@Home 2020 Programming Schedule

We’re two weeks away from the debut of Comic-Con@Home 2020! And even though this is a very different year, we’re happy to announce we’ll be sticking with the Comic-Con tradition of announcing our panel schedule two weeks in advance. Over the next five days, we’ll reveal our daily online programming line-up for Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, July 22–26, with complete programming descriptions. The panels themselves will not be available until those dates, but you’ll be able to read all about them and build your own schedule of programs you want to watch during Comic-Con@Home 2020!

Comic-Con@Home 2020 will feature over 350 separate panels spread out over all five days of the event. There will be something for everyone! Here’s how it works:

Once the daily schedules go live, you’ll be able to read the descriptions and decide what you’d like to see. The majority of our panels will also be available AFTER the July 22-26 dates, although there are some that may have a limited time period attached to them. Each panel will contain a link; when you click on that link, you’ll launch another page that has the panel video embedded on it … that video will be available on the date and time listed. When it’s available, simply push play and watch! It’s that simple.

All the panels will also be available on the Comic-Con YouTube channel, so you can also access them there. Subscribe to us on YouTube.com at https://www.youtube.com/user/ComicCon
Use MySCHED to Make Your Own Schedule!

While we’re not using the official Comic-Con app this year, we will once again be utilizing Sched.com! You can create your own schedule for panels and events you want to attend at Comic-Con@Home 2020 by using MySCHED (powered by SCHED).

Once the Comic-Con@Home programming schedule is posted, you can create your own MySCHED account on SCHED.com, and mark which panels you’d like to view. To make it easy for you, the ability to do this is located on each of our schedule pages. Once you mark the panels you'd like to view, MySCHED will give you a complete listing of them. Use the print option provided to print the list in any manner you choose.

You can view Sched.com via our website on the specific Program pages, plus on the Anime, Films, and Games pages. You can also log into Sched.com via your personal computer, mobile phone browser, or download the Sched app for quick access on your phone.

With MySCHED, you can share your schedule with your friends, see your favorites on your mobile devices and synch across platforms and devices as well. Send your schedule to your calendaring software and filter and search the list by types, titles, company names, artists, writers, celebrities ... you name it!

I agree live panels would be more exciting. There's just something you can feel about them. It makes even the glitches and screw-ups more charming, somehow.

But everyone has their own feeling on that, and TBH I can't really get excited about any of this virtual programming anyway, so whatever's easiest for the panelists is probably the best way to go.

It would be great if at least SOME of the programming was live. Perhaps if they hear early feedback on this they may do more  live.  I will watch some panels, either way. Hmm...I wonder if they will have them up for a specific period of time and then take them down. Hmmmm  ::)

I think one big problem with live panels is timings for those who are not based in the US. So a scheduled live panel on late afternoon PST, would be early hours GMT.

Just thinking how a live panel could go down the pan if all participants have bad Internet and it keeps dropping out. At least with a pre-record it can be edited to look like no problems.

True. It can also be edited so that no one says anything the studio doesn't like. :/
Live panels could be left up for 24 hours or something, so that the time-zone disadvantaged (or people with work or childcare obligations) could watch at a better time for them.

I'm sort of ambivalent towards this approach. There are pros and cons. I do agree with the statement that it'll be just like watching any other youtube video.

Pro: We get panels! Yay!!!
They will run smoothly as any technical issues would have been worked out in production. They will be edited and likely have a little more professional feel to them.

Con: See above. Sometimes the most special things about live panels are the technical issues, unedited slips (or language) and other unexpected moments that will likely be missing. There's also the feeling of being part of a shared experience with hundreds or thousands of others. It's not going to feel the same.

Pro: I can build a schedule on my own time that allows to me to watch the panels I'm interested in seeing.

Con: See above. You ever park yourself in Hall H or Ballroom 20 for a day mostly to get a good seat and wait for a panel that comes on later in the afternoon. At first, you groan over the prospect of putting up with uninteresting panels. And then comes that one panel you otherwise probably wouldn't have seen and it actually sounds interesting. The cast seems cool. You decide to give it a try and suddenly you have another must see show. Probably going to happen much less this year.

I can't complain about this approach either. To me, the gap between a real SDCC and a virtual live SDCC is about a million times bigger than the gap between a virtual live SDCC and a virtual pre-recorded SDCC...so after the huge disappointment of them having to cancel, I just can't really bring myself to feel any further disappointment about whether or not anything they can salvage lives up to my expectations.

If pre-recording works better for SDCC and its panelists for a free event with 300-400 panels, that's ok with me.

For people that can't watch a live panel live, they can stream it later.  Youtube streams aren't watch it now or miss it.  Streams are available for viewing later.  Doing them live is the best of both worlds.  That is unless CCI is going to show the streams once and then delete them.  If that's the case, recorded or live then it's a problem for people that can't watch it at the time it's available.

I'm not sure how much editing there will be.  Even pre-covid, shows like Conan were pretty much broadcast as they happened in studio.  Now, shows like Ready Room don't look very post edited polished.  It just looks like a capture of the stream as it happened.  I still wonder why they don't send out better cameras to the talent at home.  It's one thing if it is a spur of the moment thing,  It's another when it's a planned show.

If it's just a heckler who's asking stupid questions, sure. But if they get hit by something like a porno zoom bomber, that can cause lasting damage, even if they're turned off right away.

It won't be just as easy. That's not saying that there's a huge difference, but it will always be easier to find a time that works for everyone when you have your choice of any time within a few weeks, rather than having to be present at one specific time (or even on the specific days of July 23-26).

It's on youtube and not zoom.  Youtube streams are one way.  They stream out.  It's not a joint conference call where everyone sees all the other viewers.  So unless it's a panelist porno bombing, that's not a factor.

Streaming on Youtube and Zoom aren't mutually exclusive. You can have your cast on a Zoom meeting and broadcast it on Youtube.

On Zoom you can specify who will be a participant of the meeting.  Only those people are shown.  Everyone else is a spectator.  Why would they set it up so that everyone is a participant?  Are live mics handed out to every single person in a Hall H panel?

Also, if it were obfuscated like that, how would any wannabe troublemaker even find the Zoom meeting to connect to?

Anyways, before we go further down the Zoom what could be rabbit hole.  The only thing we know for sure is that Youtube is the platform, not Zoom.

People have bombed (non-SDCC) Zoom meetings who weren't supposed to be there.  It happened at a recent meeting at an industry virtual conference company attended. Yes, there are measures that you can take to mitigate it. The chance of a Zoom bombing may be small, but it's there. But if you pre-record the panel, you can edit out anything you don't want seen, so the chance isn't there.

By the same token people can cause trouble at live panels.  So should live panels be scripted and well rehearsed?  Should anyone asking questions be vetted and approved?  Should the audience be trained to respond appropriately?  People record those live panels and post them on Youtube.  CCI has no control over that.

The reason live panels are good is the spontaneity.  If it were scripted, rehearsed and sanitized then it wouldn't be a panel.  It would be a play.

Well, the questions at SDCC, at least in the main rooms, are vetted and approved. Not going to disagree that live panels are good...in fact I'm not even saying that pre-recorded is better than live. There are different sets of pros and cons.

Speculation that Zoom will be used is relevant because Zoom is probably the most common program currently to get groups of people to meet remotely. If none of the panels end up using Zoom to record, please feel free to tell me "I told you so" after SDCC@home.

CCI has every control over panels posted on YouTube.
The official panels are all professionally recorded by outlets that have to sign certain contracts about what they can and cannot include in the video.
Panel recordings done via someone's phone do appear. Many are pulled within hours. Some slip through the net. But honestly, the quality is so crap that you can hardly see anything anyway.

The source doesn't matter.  It's being broadcast through youtube.  As I already pointed out, when it's bounced off of youtube the source is obfuscated.  How will any troublemaker be able to ID and thus connect to the Zoom meeting to cause trouble?  IP cams are notoriously easy to hack since many people don't change the default password.  Does that mean that a live youtube stream sourced from an IP cam is easy to hack into?  No.  Youtube doesn't give out the IP address of the source cam.  Youtube doesn't give out the ID of the Zoom meeting.  So unless the IP cam streamer makes the title of the youtube stream the IP address of his camera, no one is finding it through the youtube live stream.  Similarly, unless a Zoom meeting streamed through youtube makes the title the ID or URL of the Zoom meeting, how will anyone watching it on youtube find the Zoom meeting?  If you can't find the meeting, you can't cause trouble.

The cases you brought up of problems on Zoom were because the Zoom meeting was well known and thus easy to find.  Finding the source of a stream on youtube is not.  A troublemaker would be better off trying to hack the youtube account.  Then they could do anything to the live stream or any recording for that matter.

And I already pointed out why the source does matter even though the final broadcast is through YouTube. People see what happens on the conference.

Didn’t say it was easy for a troublemaker to get the Zoom ID. Just said it was possible. It probably wouldn’t be a random person who’s watching the stream. It could be someone that somehow gets ahold of the ID while it’s being shared between panelists. Most likely they’d take measures to prevent this. But it’s a possibility however small. If prerecorded, it’s not a possibility.

If prerecorded, it’s not a possibility.

It is a possibility.  As I described in my last post, a troublemaker might be better off trying to hack the youtube account.  If they do that, they can swap out any prerecorded video for any other video of their choice.  Youtube accounts get hacked all the time.  Whether they have 10 subscribers or 1,000,000.  There's a cottage blackmarket industry of hacking, stealing and then selling youtube assets.  So it's entirely possible that precorded videos can be tapered with.

Either live or prerecorded there are risks.  But these risks are so infinitesimal, that it shouldn't sway any behavior.

Ah...  The Hidden Gems :-* :-*
My first one was the "Sponge Bob Square Pants" Panel in 2015 (My first year).  I was actually waiting for the 'A Person of Interest' Panel in 6AB.  Sponge Bob was before it.  It was absolutely HYSTERICAL!!!  Every year I've encountered a hidden gem.

My own personal feeling about the On-Line panels is...eh.  Live or Recorded, it's definitely not even close to actually being there.  So, I'm not excited at all by any of this.  sorry guys...   :( :(

hey guys, i got a question i'd like folk's feedback on.

should we(the forum) do a breakout of the programing per day? iow, set up Thurs/fri/sat/sun threads so everyone cn chat during the set up and con?

I have not been following this so am wondering if we'll actually be able to get into the panels, logistics etc all. BUT i am very behind the curve on this con! LOL

I would like to see this. It probably isn’t necessary to break it down further by time period or anything, but per day would be useful.

Ah...  The Hidden Gems :-* :-*

My best hidden gem was the Ryan Reynolds panel.  I was just looking for a place to eat so ducked into Hall H and got some nachos.  The panel at the time was unusual and I wondered why it was even in Hall H.  There weren't many people there.  Then they announced that the next panel was a panel for the blu-ray release of Deadpool 2.  I didn't know.  I don't look at schedules.  I don't think people thought that Reynolds would show up for a blu-ray release.  I don't think he was listed in the schedule.  If he was, I would have thought there would have been more people there.  The very last person they introduced was Ryan Reynolds.  Of course, it turned into the Ryan Reynolds panel.  The other panelists didn't get much time.

I'd be in favor of this.  It looks like there is still a decent amount of programming this year, so even though participation might be less predictable this year, I think things could easily get pretty cluttered without breakout threads.

“We always had this [monetary] buffer, so if we had to cancel the show for some catastrophic reason, we’d have enough money to meet our obligations and a little bit of seed money the next year,” Glanzer says. “I don’t think we ever thought we’d have to cancel two shows. It was really, really frightening.”

Comic-Con brought in a reported $19 million in revenue in 2017, and according to the San Diego Convention Center Corp., the event generated an estimated $149 million for the region in 2019. But even if COVID-19 testing and treatments improve, it’s profoundly uncertain when, or whether, any fan conventions could reach those heights again.

“If this were to continue and we weren’t able to have a convention, I don’t know what the future would be,” Glanzer says with a deep sigh. “It’s possible that [Comic-Con@Home] is laying the groundwork for something that could exist in the future. We’re learning a great deal.”

Scener's Watch Platform is an all-new way to connect and build community around streaming entertainment, allowing Comic-Con@Home attendees to meet with friends and fellow fans to not only participate in official programming, but host their own watch parties with up to a million guests. Also announced today, Scener now supports seven major subscription video-on-demand services: Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max, Hulu, Prime Video, Funimation, and Vimeo.

“We’re excited to have Scener as part of the Comic-Con@Home initiative.” David Glanzer, spokesperson for the non-profit Comic-Con said in a statement. “One of the major reasons for launching the online version was to maintain the Comic-Con sense of community. Scener literally brings people together, so while we may not be able to meet in person this summer, Scener allows us to meet, and share our passions virtually.”

Comic-Con@Home's Virtual Screenings, supported by Scener, will feature two tracks that fans can participate in -- a film track and an anime track -- with a live community chat. Something that Joe Braidwood, Scener co-founder described for ComicBook.com as being like "your favorite movie meets Twitch."

I hope in the future they do something in VR.  Just something as simple and low effort as using Bigscreen to stream out the panels in VR panel rooms would add a lot.  There is definitely a feeling of presence when you are in the same space as other people in VR.  If for no other reason that you can see their reactions.  Figiting because of boredom or excitement when it's good.  Doing this is so simple.  People host shared movie viewings all the time with their friends.  Studios show movies in VR movie theaters.  If CCI wanted to get fancy, they could team with Bigscreen to build virtual copies of the SD Convention Center panel rooms.  Those 3D models already exist.

VR has really taken off in the last few months.  Anyone who's tried to buy a VR headset will know what I mean.  Demand has far outstripped supply.  Whenever a store gets any stock, it's gone.  Used prices have skyrocketed.  Headsets can sell for 2-3 times what they did when they were new in stores.  People beg in forums for others to sell their spare headsets.  The audience is there.

Since E3 was canceled this year.  There was no epic Devolver presence.  Instead, they did a VR version.  It's either a game with a lot of product placement or a commercial with a lot of game play.  Either way, it's a hit.

to let everyone know what's happening here for SDCC@HOME

in a day or so we'll be opening up threads for each of the 4 days.  I may add Wednesday to that list- I have a feeling that day will be taken up by Exclusives tho.
A shout out to @Angology (https://www.friendsofcc.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=364) for creating the listings. These are NOT meant to supersede CCI's listing but to give a easy place to review the information. As such, please go to https://www.comic-con.org/cci for the most current and accurate information

I am hopeful those threads will be used for previewing, chatting about and discussing the overall vibe of the day.

All the panels are pre-recorded. The Q&A's have been pre-solisited by the panel. There may be giveaway's but folks will have to be watching ;)

#ComicConAtHome is the twitter hashtag. We encourage folks to tag @Friendsofcci in any sdcc posts ;)

in closing we are looking forward to SDCC@Home & chatting with everyone about the panels!

It's a nice video... but it just makes me sad for everything we have lost. When people talk about the 'new normal' I am sometimes afraid that we will never have it again. This video brought on that depressing feeling.

I hope that the video is right and that we will be back in San Diego next year. I miss all of you!

But we do have panels for the next few days that should get my spirits up again!

Listen, young'un.  We are going to get it all back.  All of it.  Concerts, movies, sporting events, comic book conventions ... we ARE going to go to comic-con again.  Maybe not this year, but we ARE going back.  I know it.  It's going to happen.

I'm 61 years old.  I have maybe 20 or 30 years left.  And I'm not going to live the rest of my life like this.  No way.  Ain't happening.

Hang in there.  Before you know it, we'll be raising glasses and making a toast.  To the end of the pandemic, and the beginning of getting our lives back.

As someone we all knew and loved once said: "Excelsior!"

Here ya go!  Got this from the SDCC newsletter:

The link from the Comic-Con@Home main page to the Masquerade tumblr site went live yesterday and remains active through the convention and for a time after. Tumblr accounts are free and easy to set up and use, and all entries can be viewed on the Comic-Con@Home Virtual Masquerade page on tumblr. Later today the winners will be announced on the Comic-Con@Home website and also across the Comic-Con social media platforms, but if you miss it there, we’ll have the results and pictures in tomorrow’s Newsletter.

According to Comic-Con Spokesperson/Chief Communications and Strategy Officer David Glanzer, the process of transitioning the event to an online forum held out as long as possible. As stay-at-home orders were implemented across the country, the event was hopeful they’d have to make some modifications but could still hold a physical Comic-Con. This explains why, to fans and others who go to Comic-Con, they seemed slower to announce a virtual event in comparison to other big comic conventions like Wizard World.

“The thought of an online version began shortly after the governor of California said something to the effect that he couldn’t imagine concerts or large gatherings at least until August,” Glanzer said. “It was a heartbreaking realization and it took a little time to digest that. But almost immediately we thought two things, a) is an online version possible? and b) if so, how do we make it happen?”

Comic-Con isn’t just a place to indulge in genre fare like comic books. In the last decade it’s become a major marketing tool for films and television shows to showcase their upcoming features. It’s one element fans are certainly missing with this festival. The majority of the panels are pre-recorded via Zoom, leaving no audience Q&As or a way for fans and talent to come together. Much of the online experience people are seeing this weekend is the result of working in uncharted territory in a short amount of time, according to Glanzer.

And while SDCC is, at the moment, set to return in its physical form next year many questions remain. As Glanzer says, “No in-depth discussions have taken place regarding during an entire online event next year” but he is open to the possibility of doing more with an online component in some form going forward. He says they will be looking at social media response and emails to judge the success of this year’s event and where things could turn going forward.

I hope they do something like this next year.  It's like VRchat or Bigscreen without having to have VR.  It would make virtual panels a much better experience.
