A word about Meet-ups & Social interactions at Con
« on: July 14, 2018, 08:23:41 AM »
Please take the time to be gentle with other folks. A great majority of us in the geek community have some social quirk or anxiety's, please understand and give folks room. [member=4351]corgikohmander[/member] published a pro tip recently that really struck home with me

It is very true, my daughter and myself tend to be social but my son is very introverted, still trying to get him to meet ups. Of all things Pokémon Go has helped. He will go to community events otherwise prefers to be a homebody.

I am definitely introverted.  I am no social butterfly.  That doesn't mean that I am anti-social or unfriendly.  I'm just shy.

This is great advice!
I'm introverted unless I really know you.... otherwise, I'm the person in the corner of the room with my nose stuck in a book/kindle.
It isn't that I don't want to get to know people.... I just don't always know how to go about it.

I've gotta say, many online groups seem to have a few trolls and people not there for the right reasons, but FoCC is a fantastic community!  Kind and accepting people who want to share their love of cons with others with similar interests.  Hugs to all!

Yep yep yep!  Same here.  I may seem extroverted online (I have 3k+ posts here WOW) but I have social anxiety IRL and I'm fairly introverted.  I'm excited to meet you but I apologize if I'm awkward.  But... we're geeks.  Lots of us are awkward. So let's be kind to each other <3

That's me too, except my nose is stuck in my iPhone or iPad.

I've gotta say, many online groups seem to have a few trolls and people not there for the right reasons, but FoCC is a fantastic community!

I fell victim to an online troll here in 2012 when I was new here and assumed this was par for the course for this site.  Fortunately, I was proven wrong and he was promptly banned.  I fell victim to him again a year later on Ace Parking's Facebook page.  He was one of those people who buys as many exclusives from Exhibit Hall and resells them at a higher price on eBay.

On of the things I love about SDCC is the lack of pressure to be social. I can just sit in a room or in line and wait and not talk and nobody takes offense. But people are usually open to talking too if you want to chat. It is so different from high-pressure work cons. I love love love it.

i went to CES in Jan... it was all about being social- and business social - not friendly social. i really did not like that vibe.

Oh yes, CES is one of the worst for networking! It's the place to be if you're an extrovert.
