there was a bunch of time to sign up for the interest list- it's the transition from interest list to actual volunteer which might be difficult. it wasn't for the '18 con but it has been tricky in the past.

Just keep your eyes open and you'll have a good chance. This last year the windows for all the signups stayed open a while. In previous years they opened and closed really quickly. 2019 is the 50th anniversary though and it's rumored to be an epic con so there might be more interest.
-
Quick question: can you cosplay and volunteer? Obviously not a huge costume, just something that I could wear like normal clothes or even wear a T shirt over it. Does SDCC have a strict policy on what volunteers wear during their shifts, as long as its appropriate?
-
FWIW Here's the dress code blurb from this year's packet
Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.
I only did an inside-the-con, Friday volunteer job this year and our Group had no cosplayers. At Sails, our personal belongings were set aside in another room before working our assignment there. Very physical work in narrow aisles. They did accomadate Special Groups like military, ADA, or volunteers with back problems, at the work site.
-
So it sounds like it isn't against the rules, per say, but is not recommended to do so? Just making sure.
-
I'd definitely wait to see the new packet, though. It'll have contact info as well. Use the Member ID Contact Us form and they may have more info about cosplay. The question gets routed to the Volunteer Department. Have them add the words "costume and cosplay to the dress code?
Edit: cabler30 posted about a Fb Group here that may have some info, if you have access.

I've seen plenty of people wearing costumes while they are volunteering. A LOT of the staff wear costumes while working. I've heard department heads say that's it's fine to cosplay as long as it doesn't get in the way of doing your job. So no, I wouldn't say that. If your idea of cosplay is simply having body paint on, I saw someone on the exhibit floor doing that this year, that may be frowned upon. But I don't think anyone would have a problem with a family friendly outfit. Overall, everyone is pretty chill. When it comes to volunteering, just keep in mind that just like with any job, the image you project will be associated with CCI for the general public. So cosplay accordingly.

How does volunteering work? If you get selected do you work all weekend? And how long per day? Just wondering if you're allowed time to enjoy the con.

You can work 1 shift or up to 4 shifts, it's up to you. Of course you can work no shifts but then you really won't be volunteering and you'll lose your priority status for next year. With each shift you work you get an active badge for that day. The exception is if you work a pre-con shift, a shift before the con starts, then you can pick any day as your free day. A shift is 3 hours but I think of it as 3.5 hours since you should plan to be there a little early. I always show up 30 mins before. Sometimes they let you off early if there are too many volunteers or if there's nothing left to do. I've worked 2 hour shifts.
You have plenty of time to enjoy the con. If going to panels or the exhibit floor is your thing, you can either work very early in the morning before any of them start or very late at night well after they have all ended. When you work or what you do is up to you. You request a time or a job when getting scheduled. But it's generally either or. If you pick a time, they pick the job. If you pick the job, then they pick the time. But it's not unheard of if they get to know your face that they'll be more flexible.
-
Several questions:
1) So say you work two shifts on two separate days. Then you get badges for those days. Do you have the opportunity to get badges for other days without volunteering (ie purchasing)?
2) Can you work two shifts in one day and get a badge for a different day?
3) What about Preview Night? There are only three hours, and a shift is three hours. So is there a point in volunteering on Wednesday?
4) How early and how late do volunteering hours go? Would it be possible to do all your volunteering before 10am, or perhaps later at night after you get some dinner?
-
Several questions:
1) So say you work two shifts on two separate days. Then you get badges for those days. Do you have the opportunity to get badges for other days without volunteering (ie purchasing)?
You can try to buy any other day you want just like anyone else. Many people only volunteer on certain days since they have paid badges for the others. Many people have paid badges for all 4 days and preview night but still volunteer for one shift just to keep their priority volunteer status. Being a volunteer is the only way to guarantee that you can go to comic-con each year.
2) Can you work two shifts in one day and get a badge for a different day?
No, one shift per day and the badge is only active for that same day.
3) What about Preview Night? There are only three hours, and a shift is three hours. So is there a point in volunteering on Wednesday?
Since volunteers can't go to preview night as a volunteer, working on Wednesday is precon and thus you get a free day Thurs-Sun.
4) How early and how late do volunteering hours go? Would it be possible to do all your volunteering before 10am, or perhaps later at night after you get some dinner?
I know there are shifts that start at 6am. I think they might start as early as 5am. I've been offered shifts at 11pm. I think some of the viewing rooms are open 24 hours but I don't know if volunteers work those.

Does anyone know when roughly the 2019 priority registration goes live? Is it the same every year (judging from the first post). This was my first year volunteering and it was great!
Some questions if I want to do return volunteering:
Do all 2018 volunteers get put on the priority list?
I was a tad late for my 1 and only shift (about 10-ish mins), does that affect me in any way? Trolley took longer to get there than I expected. They still allowed me to volunteer and I did my shift no problem.
Should we be on the lookout for an email regarding 2019 volunteering?
Is the process to apply the same? Click the link and fill out the application?
It seems the interest list comes out first, again looking at the first post? Is that for returning or first-timers?
-
Returning registration varies. For 2018 it was on October 28 2017. For 2017 it occurred in March 2017 but that was unusually late.
That being said, being a volunteer does not qualify you for returning registration. You will need to try during open registration which can occur anytime between late 2018 and spring 2019. It was in December last time.
ETA:
2018 returning (priority) volunteer registration opened on Oct 30 2017 and closed on Nov 10
2018 open registration was held on Dec 9 2017

Your last sentence - do you mean as an attendee or as a volunteer? This year, I was both. Attendee for 3 days and volunteer for 1. Being a volunteer does not automatically qualify me for the priority list or do you mean as an attendee?

If you paid for a badge for any day this year, you qualify for returning registration. :)

Ah, yes! This was my 7th year as an attendee, but my first as a volunteer so I'm just trying to clear up some information I've read in passing. :)
I just wanted to confirm that all volunteers get put on a priority registration list to volunteer again next year? And, if there's an email I should be looking out for?
Thanks for the input :)

I am sorry I totally misunderstood you. Yes you are correct that anyone who volunteered this year gets priority volunteer sign up for 2019. Other people who wish to volunteer will have the opportunity to apply in the spring.

It was an email that was sent to those on the priority list last year with the date range for registering.
I included all the dates from last year's thread in the OP for reference, but there is no guarantee it will be the same time period.

When the email for sign ups for the '19 Interest List (for first timers) goes out, that will be the time to log in to our Member ID account and confirm a green check mark for "CCI 19 Priority Volunteer Reg" appears.

But on the 2018 volunteer discussion, I thought I read that an email was sent to priority volunteers. Did I misinterpret?
Example:
I just have one more question. I'm a priority volunteer, and quoting the email
"You are guaranteed admission to our Comic-Con 2018 volunteer program if you register prior to the deadline."
Does this mean that I can register ANYTIME after Monday October 30, and before November 10 and still have a spot? It's just to be clear. I don't want to mess this up

Just want to be clear, since the question was whether there was a particular email for the priority volunteers.

Priority(returning) volunteers do get an email about priority volunteer registration. The process is analogous to returning attendees versus new attendees. If I remember right, last year we got the priority volunteer registration email in the middle of October for priority volunteer registration at the end of October.

I was trying to clarify the last part at the end,

With two days to go, predicting a temporary member ID shut down soon to update that information...

Finally, an update:
https://www.comic-con.org/cci/volunteers
The Comic-Con 2019 Volunteer Interest List is will open on Thursday, September 20, 2018 at 10:00 AM Pacific Daylight Time (PDT). At that time, you may log in to your Comic-Con Member ID, select the “Volunteering” tab, and click on the volunteer interest link to sign up.
The Comic-Con 2019 Volunteer Interest List is limited. Signing up for the Interest List does not guarantee you an opportunity to participate in the Comic-Con 2019 volunteer program. At a later date, all individuals who have successfully signed up for the Volunteer Interest List will get an email notification with the date and time that registration will be available to them.
Priority List:
The Comic-Con 2019 Volunteer Priority List (those that completed volunteer assignments at Comic-Con 2018) will have an opportunity to register before the Volunteer Interest List. Priority volunteers will receive an email notification with the date and time that Comic-Con 2019 priority volunteer registration will open, and will have a 12-day window in which they are guaranteed an opportunity to enter the Comic-Con 2019 volunteer program.
NOTE: If you successfully completed at least one volunteer assignment for Comic-Con 2018, do NOT sign up for the Comic-Con 2019 Volunteer Interest List. You will automatically be notified via email when Comic-Con 2019 priority volunteer registration opens at a later date.
Interest List:
After priority volunteer registration is complete, the Volunteer Interest List will receive an email notification with the date and time that Comic-Con 2019 Interest List registration will be available to them. Interest List registration will remain open for the Volunteer Interest List on a first-come, first-served basis until the program's capacity is reached. At that time, the volunteer program will close and there will be no further opportunities to register to volunteer for Comic-Con 2019.
If you are not on the Volunteer Priority List or the Volunteer Interest List, there will be another opportunity available for you to volunteer at WonderCon Anaheim 2019 (March 29 - March 31, 2019)! Information regarding volunteer opportunities at WonderCon Anaheim 2019 will be available on the WonderCon Anaheim “Volunteers” page, and on our social media sites, in early 2019. Watch for it!
We thank ALL of our volunteers – past, present, and future – for their help and enthusiasm in making Comic-Con and WonderCon Anaheim great experiences for all!
-
Thanks for the heads up! :)

I forget from last year, but will our accounts show our priority volunteer status if we qualify by tomorrow? It would be good to know for sure and that there wasn't some glitch. Just in case people have to try to volunteer anew again.

If you did at least one (1) volunteer shift during SDCC ‘18, you’ll be fine. No need to panic. Eventually the Member ID system will get updated to show your status.
-
I'm also slightly concerned. It was my first year volunteering and I did get there like 15 minutes late due to my trolly. I heard you only get the email if you're in good standing, which I am concerned about. Has that been an issue for anyone?

After Member ID updates, you may see a slow page load, just be patient. Should still be an easy sign up.

It would have surprised me if you wern't designated as a returning vol. Being late is bad but not flagrant ;)
and for everyone interested in Volunteering, last year there was a good amount of time to sign up on the interest list. While i hesitate to say this for certain, i would **guess** that the list will be open for a few days. <<-----that is of course dependent on how much interest there is. YMMV!!!

I was thinking they may even need more volunteers for the wonderful things they have planned...whatever they are.. ;D

Me too. I've never volunteered before and wonder if it might be fun to help out. I should probably read up on other people's volunteering experiences soon.

I signed up as well. Might be too weak to do heavy lifting but have loads of experience doing event stuff.

Volunteering for me, has been great fun. I really like doing a bit behind the scenes and I feel like I am part of the show. Also..this year, there just may be a very cool 50th t-shirt. 3 hours went by quickly for me this year. We were folding the giant bags and putting the materials together for pick up. I had 1 pre-con shift. It was fun to see all of the bags before the con began.
-
I just check my account and Im not eligible for priorty volunteering, I did a pre con shift on Tuesday, looks like I'm going to have to email Sue to work out what happened, can someone please tell me her email address.

I like volunteering. Last year, I even did a shift that otherwise I didn't spend much time at CC. I was busy at the offsites all day. People asked me why I bothered with a shift then. I said my volunteer shift was my comic-con experience for the day.
-
I signed up as well. Might be too weak to do heavy lifting but have loads of experience doing event stuff.
The only lifting I've done is a box full of programs or bags. It's not all that heavy. If you can't, there will be plenty of other volunteers around you to help out.

When you arrive at your work location, the staff member or lead volunteer will ask about lifting, standing, back problems and other health concerns. In our group in BBL, four people were able to be accommodated easily.
If anyone has any ADA concerns, the actual sign up form has an area to note if any assistance may be required.

So now that we've started the process of Volunteer Interest and we wait until newbie Volunteers' time to register, can anyone here speak to what a first timer will need to do when the time comes to be ready to fill out the final registration as quickly as possible?

Comic-Con 2018 Volunteer Registration
Comic-Con 2018 Interest List Volunteer Registration is now open! To register as a volunteer, select the "Volunteering" tab. Those on the Comic-Con 2018 Interest List Volunteer List (as well as any priority volunteers who have not yet registered) will be able to register at this time. Registrations will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. When the volunteer program reaches its limit, the link will be removed, registration will close and there will be no further opportunities to register to volunteer for Comic-Con 2018.
-
So now that we've started the process of Volunteer Interest and we wait until newbie Volunteers' time to register, can anyone here speak to what a first timer will need to do when the time comes to be ready to fill out the final registration as quickly as possible?
The registration process mainly a series of acknowledgments, contact info, checkboxes, and form submission.
Roughly, the first thing after clicking on the tab will be to acknowledge Terms and Conditions.
Next will be a contact info section, adding a Mobile number, and then an Emergency Contact.
Then a section on listing any mobility or accessibility needs, I believe some checkboxes for sight, hearing, and a comment box.
The most overlooked and rushed will be a simple checkbox, where you indicate if you have availability for pre-con assignments. (You don't decide any days or times here, it's a subsequent "email list signup" followed up in Late June/ Early July.)
Last, submit the form and see a confirmation page. A confirmation email with volunteer packet pdf link gives more details.
-
This year, I rode in the shuttle to my hotel with a woman who volunteers. She uses volunteering to guarantee she has a badge for Comic-Con. She does NOT participate in open registration. She volunteers every day. Once her shift is done, she checks the panel schedule or off site to see what's available. That's how she does Comic-Con. As a result of that conversation, I will always do my best to maintain my volunteer status.

So how does the registration process actually work when it does open up, especially for first timers? Is it first come, first serve (ie, need quick fingers and good internet connection)? A lottery? What info do you put down? (Like number of days/shifts or what jobs?) Is the registration different for Priority as opposed to first time, other than the earlier date?
-
So for interest list volunteer sign up you will get an email stating when sign ups are open. That day youll be able to log into your comic con account and fill out the paperwork and submit and then ur done :) . It is first come first serve so as soon as you can sign up, sign up. It is not a lottery. For the info you put down its easy info.( availability for pre con shifts, days available, if you are handicapped, name)
For priority volunteers the process is basically the sane except they have like 1 week or 2 to sign up)
Hope this helps ;D

Priority volunteer registration is only for those on the Volunteer Priority List (those who completed at least one assignment during Comic-Con 2018 or were pre-approved by the volunteer department).

Once your registration is complete, you’ll receive an email confirmation to the email associated with your Member ID account. The “COMIC-CON 2019 VOLUNTEER ORIENTATION PACKET” will also be attached to your email confirmation.
Priority volunteer registration will close on Monday, October 29, 2018. You must register online prior to this deadline if you want to redeem your guaranteed admission to our Comic-Con 2019 volunteer program."
COOL!!!
Got my email!!! :) :)
-
In previous years, interest registration opened up 6 days after priority registration ended. That puts volunteer registration on either November 2nd or 3rd this year for those looking to sign up as a first timer.
-
Oct 29th for closing ..... hummmmmm /wheels turning/

So the priority volunteers get the email about registering, but isn't there an email sent out to announce the interest list registration?

So the priority volunteers get the email about registering, but isn't there an email sent out to announce the interest list registration?
Interest List Registration occurs after all Priority volunteers have registered...if that's what you're asking.
-
Yes, but since they announce priority registration, once priority closes up, will they also announce the date and time of interest registration via email? has than been done in the past for first timers to register after priority is completed?

No problem! Glad to share :D

Once priority closes, they will then know how many additional volunteers they need. At that point, they will send out the email to those that already registered on the volunteer interest list. Signing up on the volunteer interest list does not guarantee you will be selected as a volunteer, and...
Signing up on the volunteer interest list is closed for 2019.
I hope that answers the question. :)
-
I didn't sign up for the volunteer interest list this year, but is it true that they now require an 8 hour shift per volunteering day in order to reap the benefits of a day badge?
-
Why is the window for priority registration so wide? I assume that means it rarely if ever fills up?
-
I didn't sign up for the volunteer interest list this year, but is it true that they now require an 8 hour shift per volunteering day in order to reap the benefits of a day badge?
That seems pretty extreme. From what I've heard it's still a 3 hour shift required in order to get a day badge.
Why is the window for priority registration so wide? I assume that means it rarely if ever fills up?
They just get that benefit, give those with previous year experience the ability to sign up with little stress involved. Once that fills it's a bit of a mad dash for new volunteers to sign up.

How mad is “mad”? Minutes? Seconds? Lose out because my internet latency was too high?
-

No.... 3 hours, and you only need to do 1 shift to stay on the priority volunteer list.
How do these rumors get started?
-

I can't imagine it being seconds, maybe a matter of hours, one or two at the most. Those slots will be filling up quickly once they are open. It is the best assured way to go, it even beats out going out for returning registration.
-

NO, this is not true. A 3-4 hr shift is required per day badge.
One shift will maintain priority volunteer status for the following year.
Why is the window for priority registration so wide? I assume that means it rarely if ever fills up?
The window for priority volunteers is traditionally large- there is no hurry to sign up. My impression is that shortening the priority volunteer window would NOT make new vol reg happen earlier.

it's tricky to say because prior to last year vol's got preview nite **and** new vol reg happened prior to gen badge sale.
those differences really really throw the projections off.
Last year was, i think a model that cci would like to follow-
I think last year, new vol sign up happened after gen reg.
also, last year if i recall correctly, the window for new Vol's was open for a while too.
double check me- i may be off-

That sounds like a departmental volunteer or volunteer staff position, not a daily volunteer. A daily volunteer shift is about 3 hours depending on how things go. Sometimes it's shorter if there are too many volunteers and not enough to do.
-
Why is the window for priority registration so wide? I assume that means it rarely if ever fills up?
It's not meant to fill up. If you volunteer this year then you have a spot to volunteer the following year. There's no rush. It's the only guaranteed way to attend comic-con every year. That's why many people who are able to buy a badge every day still volunteer one shift. It's the fail safe.
-
How mad is “mad”? Minutes? Seconds? Lose out because my internet latency was too high?
Depends on the year. I think this year it was open pretty long. I think in previous years it has closed in minutes. Considering that this is a special year, it would be wise to be quick instead of slow.
-
No.... 3 hours, and you only need to do 1 shift to stay on the priority volunteer list.
How do these rumors get started?
It's because there was a lot of talk about being a departmental volunteer this year. For that, an 8 hour shift is the time commitment for some departments. Other departments are less. Others are more.
-

YEP!!!
-
So I qualify for volunteer registration, and I was able to get returning registration 4day + PN, so if I don't apply when that link comes out today will SDCC frown upon that for future volunteer registration? I'm worried because the application comes out today when I'm at work and I have limited use of my phone during that time.

[member=7825]Sakura17[/member] - we have until October 29th to submit that we want to again register as volunteers, so you have plenty of time. There is no rush if you cannot get to it today :)

Volunteers
Comic-Con 2019 priority volunteer registration is now open! If you are on the Volunteer Priority List, you may log in to your Comic-Con Member ID, select the "Volunteering" tab, and click the priority volunteer registration link. Only those on the Comic-Con 2019 Priority Volunteer List are able to register at this time. Priority volunteer registration closes on Monday, October 29, 2018 at 5:00 PM Pacific Daylight Time (PDT). You must register online prior to this deadline if you want to redeem your guaranteed admission to our Comic-Con 2019 volunteer program.
Priority List:
The Comic-Con 2019 Volunteer Priority List is comprised of volunteers who completed at least one volunteer assignment at Comic-Con 2018. Priority volunteers have the opportunity to register before the Volunteer Interest List. Priority volunteers have been sent an email notification with the date and time of Comic-Con 2019 priority volunteer registration, and are given a 12-day window that will guarantee them an opportunity to enter the Comic-Con 2019 volunteer program.

The one thing I think I noticed was them asking for an emergency contact. I don't remember them doing that last year. Did anyone else.
-
From what I can tell, everything is the same still like the emergency contact, yet for the pre-con part, the online form said that people will be contacted “10 days or so” before the con. I think that is new, but I wouldn’t worry about it.
Anyway, all set for 2019. :)
-
Frustrating! I got "File not found" errors multiple times, both on my iPad (Safari) and laptop (Safari). Took a many times to actually get through to the Volunteer Confirmation page. Phew..
-
Done :)
no pre con for me as I have to work and can't take the whole week off :/
Oh well, at least i'm still going! :D

I had that as well at 10am, but on the third try, it went through.

done
i hope i get another Monday before con Vol. shift !

Has anybody started their registration and had to stop because - for instance they didn't have the emergency contact information at hand? I am concerned about hitting the cancel button...arggh. I should have had the information ready to go. :-[

You should be fine. As long as you get that “congratulations” email and your account shows you are confirmed, you’re good.
-

I logged out without finishing and able to log back in now.
Plus, I can see waiting to complete. Some folks may be waiting for the ability to change an email address, which is currently locked for changes, before completing registration. (One friend, with a regular badge, hasn't been getting any emails and is waiting for that fix before the first-timer sign up opens up.)
-
All done. Thank you [member=2389]Mario Wario[/member] and [member=1732]SamTurtledove[/member] ! :)

That and an onsite phone number. I think both were optional last year. They are mandatory this year. Something might have happened.

I changed my email at some point. I still get email at both the old email address and the new one. For example, I just got the volunteer packet at both addresses right after signing up.

The day you sign up for a shift, if your shift is way later in the day they can call you to come in earlier any time that day.
-
One thing I noticed last year for pre-con shifts was that when I forgot to sign up as soon as the email came and signed up way late, there seemed to be at least 2 waves of confirmations. I thought I was not going to get a pre-con shift when others got their notices, but then about a week later, I got a pre-con shift email! I was VERY happy.

My pre-con shift was BB&L. Otherwise known as Bags, Books, and Lanyards. Mine was scheduled on Wednesday, and the time was before Preview Night started. Basically, we put together the packets (bag, programs, quick guide, lanyard) attendees who had preview night could pick up.

I did the same-- books, bags, lanyards. It was fun seeing the Sails Pavilion getting 'dressed up' for the show. I really liked seeing all the different bags.
-

Oh yeah...
And the benefit was being able to pick your own bag and pin. :) :)

I helped set up the Art Auction in the Hyatt. We helped artists bring their stuff in and put their works up on the pegboards. It was nice because it meant I could look at all the artwork beforehand so I didn't have to do it during convention time :P

hey guys!
I noticed that on my volunteering tab this message appears:
Comic-Con 2019 Interest List registration will begin at 10:00 AM Pacific Daylight Time on November 1, 2018. Registration will be limited on a first-come, first-served basis. Not everyone on the Interest List will have an opportunity to register for the Comic-Con 2019 volunteer program.
So that's like the regular registration for volunteers right? I'm new to this process and willing to try this year, but anyone can explain the process? I mean, I log in at 10 am on nov 1st and then what? I choose days or tasks or what do I do? asking to be prepared because it seems that will go fast.
Thanks!

That's it. You don't choose dates or tasks. At this point you just tell them what your phone number is, your emergency contact and whether you are interested in a pre-con shift. Then you are signed up. You choose shifts during comic-con.

Cool, thanks!

Got an email regarding the volunteer interest list. Opens Nov 1 10AM PDT

Just got my email for the interest list. Best of luck everyone!

WTF is going on with volunteering? can't log in
I was able to log in. Can anyone get in to sign up for the new vol slots?
sign up is tomorrow, nov 1st ;)
-

If you signed up that you were interested (which I did), should I have gotten a letter? Or do some people not get letters (like they pick and choose)?
-
If you signed up that you were interested (which I did), should I have gotten a letter? Or do some people not get letters (like they pick and choose)?
the new people on the interest list should have gotten an email- to my knowledge there is no 'choosing'
regardless if you signed up on the list - log in to your member id before 10 am pt, go to the volunteer tab & follow the directions.
it's possible your email from cci got lost (spam folder etc)
-
For new volunteers that register on Nov 1st, is there a chance that we could still get pre-con shifts? Or will it be shifts that are during the convention? In addition, once you volunteer for the 3 hour shift, does the day that you volunteer have to be the day you attend or can it be a different day? I already got 4 day + PN during returning registration, and trying to decide if it's worth volunteering?
Does CCI get mad that you showed interest for volunteering but then decide not to volunteer when registration opens up? Or is it more like you get banned from being a volunteer, if you get picked and they reached out to you for a shift and then you decline it?
-
Probably too late to ask, but has anyone who's done this in the past have issues with the process? Like, server issues or getting in too late to register? Not sure exactly how many people are trying tomorrow for volunteering, but I assume demand will be higher than usual because it is the 50th.

Thanks Alyssa! I didn't even realize emails had gone out until I read it here. We've checked our spam and everything and neither of us has an email, even though we are shown as green for "CC'19 Volunteer Interest List" in our accounts. I'll do what you suggested.

My first year I got a pre-con shift, so yes, there's still a chance.
It's a good idea to stick to whatever shift you have been assigned. You want to stay in their good graces. I've gotten all days in the past, but I always do at least one shift. I always want to stay on the 'Priority Volunteer' list.

there have been issues with the process- but they're usually worked through fairly quickly.

if you don't confirm your interest when it opens up, cci will not hold it against u.
if you confirm interest today and don't show up for a shift during con - it is likely you will not be eligible to be a volunteer in the future.
I am press, and still maintain my volunteer status just incase- ;) I've actually learned a lot about other areas of the con due to volunteering. I worked a spot in the art show once, the offices as a runner once, the BBL (books bags & lanyards) a few times -

yeah, sometimes things just go wonky due to wacky electrons mis-aligned ;)
this whole comic con process it a LOT more bearable with forum friends to keep a look out for missed data points ;)

Remember to have this info ready to complete the form:
Onsite Phone
Emergency Contact Name
Emergency Contact Phone
Right before submitting the form, you will see a small check box for indicating interest in "Pre-Convention Volunteering." It's an optional box, but it's a chance for both Priority and New Volunteers to try for any Pre-Con assignments, Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday before the show starts.

[member=1732]SamTurtledove[/member] One question. Let's say we get in, complete the form in record time, all good there. How do we know if we get in? Will the confirm quickly? Send out the packet same day? Or are we gonna be in the dark on that one for a while?

I found that the "Back to Member ID Home Page" button didn't actually work, and I had a minor panic attack. I had to manually go back to the Comic Con homepage and go back into the Member ID section.

Confirmation right away and email should be within 2 days.

Just finished, but missed the checkbox for Pre-Con volunteering. Could I contact SDCC to see if I can correct that?

Very Fast! Got the packet!

I actually got my email almost immediately after. Here I thought it would have closed up in a matter of seconds with the mad rush, but man I got lucky

Just finished, but missed the checkbox for Pre-Con volunteering. Could I contact SDCC to see if I can correct that?
sure, it wouldn't hurt
email them ;)
-
The website said one thing, but the packet I got in email wasn't as clear, so I wanted to ask:
- If we don't need / want / can't, do we have to volunteer every single day? Is it possible to skip and day and volunteer another?
- I checked the box for pre-con volunteering. If hypothetically one helped out everyday does each day count as a "shift" (in that it's as if you worked on thurs, fri, sat, etc.)
- How many pre-con days does one typically get? I am flying from out of town but will be there 1-2 days earlier, so assignments on tues/wed would be easier to work with than mon, though if I really need to I can make Monday work
I have a regular attendee badge, but after attending SDCC for so many years I need to change it up, so hence why I want to try out volunteering. I am wondering what it would take to be a priority volunteer, but want to balance that with enjoyment of the con.
-
sorry abt the unintentional misdirect re when to log into the member id- ;)
glad so many folks got in and the process was easy-
If anyone has an extra member id that has signed up to the volunteer interest list but did not complete the form, can you please monitor the member id & let us know when the 'sdcc sign up to volunteer' form actually closes? Thx in advance
[member=364]Angology[/member] that's a interesting data point to track for next year- how long the actual sign up takes to fill up.

I have a regular attendee badge, but after attending SDCC for so many years I need to change it up, so hence why I want to try out volunteering. I am wondering what it would take to be a priority volunteer, but want to balance that with enjoyment of the con.
You can volunteer one day, any day. One shift completed successfully is enough to become a priority volunteer for next year.
Just one pre con shift per volunteer and therefore a free day for that volunteer (except PN). CCI will send an email two weeks before for pre con shifts and you can select the day of the pre con shift and estimated schedule, then CCI will send the schedules for the chosen volunteers. For the rest of the con you're guarantee a shift everyday.

Just to clarify, if we do a pre-con shift, that means we get a badge for any day we wish?
I currently have a Sunday badge, and if I completely strike out during Open Reg, I was thinking of volunteering Thur + Fri, and then also volunteering maybe Wed for a Sat badge.

Yes! My son did this last year. He did a pre-con shift and chose to get Saturday badge. It was great!

sorry abt the unintentional misdirect re when to log into the member id- ;)
glad so many folks got in and the process was easy-
If anyone has an extra member id that has signed up to the volunteer interest list but did not complete the form, can you please monitor the member id & let us know when the 'sdcc sign up to volunteer' form actually closes? Thx in advance
[member=364]Angology[/member] that's a interesting data point to track for next year- how long the actual sign up takes to fill up.
I will keep an eye out! Sounds like good information to have. Looks like last year it was open for quite a while. I wonder how it will go this year.

Did he only want a Saturday badge?
Funny thing. I had a pre-con shift last year. I was also a paid attendee for all days. I did get a volunteer badge, but as I didn't need it, I put it away. When I looked at it later, it looked like it had all days.

Yes. [member=5681]sessionka[/member] - He had the other 3 days and needed a Saturday. We were hoping he could get a pre-con shift so he could choose to get a Saturday badge for his shift and get to enjoy the full Saturday. It was his first time at SDCC and it worked out! :)

sure, it wouldn't hurt
email them ;)

He did have to go in on Friday to get his Saturday badge done. Not too bad and he said it didn't take long.

Hmm, now I’m wondering... was he able to combine all badges (different color per day) into a single all-days badge?
It’s a minor thing, but I’d rather have that single badge than the daily one if I’m going to actually attend all days.

I have not heard if it is closed yet.
If i remember correctly, last year it was open for a few days- we could be repeating that situation

Just finished, but missed the checkbox for Pre-Con volunteering. Could I contact SDCC to see if I can correct that?
I heard they will send you an email prior to con asking if you can volunteer Wed, not sure about other days.

Usually they say it's full in the Notices tab, yet text hasn't changed. The poster may have not been signed up previously for today's registration.

I need confirmation on pre con volunteering. Someone on FB is saying that they no longer give badges for days you don't volunteer on. I don't see why anyone would volunteer on Tues/Wed if they couldn't get another day. I know you can't go to preview night by volunteering, but if I volunteer on Wed I can get another day is what I understand at the moment. Anyone know for sure the deal?

i would put money on cci not changing the rules.
the rules have been, work one shift pre con & get one day during the con of your choice. IF CCI changes that, i suspect they will make major announcements letting folks know.
sounds like someone on twitter is trying to -----for lack of a nice word,-- create conflict

From the first page of Terms and Conditions, the first check box in the process, the part about pre-con.
"If you volunteer before the convention, you will be given a badge on a convention day of your choice."
Assignments are given out onsite. On the day(s) you wish to volunteer, you must first check in at the Volunteer Check-In/Scheduling Area onsite. After showing a valid photo ID, and presenting the parental waiver if needed, you will be given an assignment and a badge for that day. Daily volunteers may get assigned to a different department each day and are "on call" when not on assignment in case of emergencies. You may enjoy all the convention has to offer when you are not on assignment. Your badge is only good for that day and may not be transferred to another person. If you volunteer before the convention, you will be given a badge on a convention day of your choice.

Y’know, I totally forgot about the free aspect of volunteering. My focus was simply to get into SDCC any way possible (maybe I should take up acting? Ha). So if I strike out in Open Reg, hey, that’s actually money saved!

I never really thought of volunteering at comic con until we came up with nada in the pre reg so I’m happy that I put family and myself on interest list and we were able to get in on the volunteer side of the con, now we can do all 4 days if we want.

So if we have 4 day + PN, and we volunteer for 1 shift, are we able to get a refund on one of the dates that we initially paid?

So, I've signed up for volleying, but the form asked me for my phone number. I live in Australia and my phone doesn't offer roaming. I will have a SIM card once I hit the ground in SD though. Does anyone know if it's possible to change the phone number on your registration?
Do they even call or text you?

What the? That seems really odd. What would be the reasoning behind that?

I'm assuming since you need to have all four days to be able to get PN while buying badges during any of the registrations. If you no longer have all four days, therefore you wouldn't have PN.

Three out of four of my group got in yesterday for the very first time - yay!!
I’ve seen a few examples from other sites, but what kind of duties can we expect? Is it possible for three people to be working together on something, or is it more likely we’ll be split up? And we are able to be in cosplay, yes?

if you all go together to get your assignments it may be/is likely possible for you all to work together- It really depends on what they need and therefore when u want to work -- and the jobs, line managment on the floor vs BBL (books bags & lanyards)

Daughter & I both signed up to volunteer yesterday, still planning on trying for badges but we will still volunteer either way.

That's really wild. Here my nerves were getting the better of me, thinking that I wouldn't have a chance to get in with what I assume will be a pretty in demand year, and here we are next day and everything is still open. Wild. It's a bummer you can't sign up even if you aren't on the interest list, I'd get a few friends of mine to do it and go for free, but oh well.

Last year it took a while to close also, maybe a week or so BUT in '16 & before it filled within a min or 2-- it's really hard to gage hence suggesting folks sign up asap when it opens. I think the slowness is a direct result of the 'interest list' process. it requires long term planing- and may produce a better quality of volunteer (show up, stay for the entire shift etc)

I agree in general that it's hard to gauge, but it was actually '15 & before when it filled up within a min or 2. Here is the times it took to fill up the last few years:
<2016: minutes
2016: 2 hours
2017: 4 days
2018: 14 days
2019: ?? (So far, 1+ days)

From https://www.comic-con.org/cci/comic-con-cancellationrefund-policy
"The Comic-Con 2019 badge refund deadline is May 13, 2019. After this date your Comic-Con badge purchase is non-refundable. All refunds are subject to a 10% processing fee.
To submit a refund request form, CLICK HERE. You must include your Comic-Con Member ID, first name, last name, email, and the day(s) you want refunded. Failure to include this information may delay your refund processing time."
Have you decided which day you'd like to remove from 4 day + Preview Night?
As @Loliitz mentioned, the current 5 days could be a badge for only 3 days, once you remove/refund one single day, which has to be either Thursday, Friday, Saturday, or Sunday.
-

I am not going to try for a refund. When I emailed them I asked if we got a 4day + PN, will we be able to get a refund for the date you volunteered, they said they will NOT REFUND part of a four day badge. They can only do single day badges. So I guess this won't help me out this year, but next year if you don't get 4 day passes then this would be the route to go by volunteering on the date you don't have a pass.
-
I got a friend the same 4Day+PN during Returning Reg and convinced him to do Volunteer for the first time this year. He also thought of refunding a day. This helps convince him to hold on to it.
Preview Night definitely worth doing and keeping, I wouldn't refund that day.

I'm assuming that once open registration starts, and 4 day passes run out, that majority of people are going to quickly sign up for volunteer spots since it's the only way after open registration ends to get a pass. Since CCI won't refund 4 day passes, if you only get 3 days, you can volunteer on the day that you don't have a pass so it's like getting a 4 day pass. I don't know what their cutoff amount is for volunteers but if everyone applies right away on that Saturday they might have already met their limit.
-

To me, that seems like a huge risk to wait until Open Reg to decide whether to volunteer. I signed up right when it opened last week, not knowing how long the list would be open... minutes, hours, days, who knows. I only got Sunday badges during Returning Reg, and I was not going to count on luck to get the rest during Open Reg, so I registered as a volunteer as a safety net. Even if I do get all four days + PN, I'll still volunteer to get priority volunteering next year.

It seems unwise to not sign up as a volunteer as soon as you can. Just because you sign up doesn't mean you have to do any shifts. It's not a commitment. That would also be unwise. It's always a good idea to do a shift a con to maintain your volunteer status regardless of how many days you can get. Sunday shifts after the con closes is a popular time for full badge holders to do a shift. You don't miss anything. A pre-con shift is also a great option but harder to get.
-
Wait, there’s post-con shifts? It never occurred to me that there would be, though I suppose it makes sense. Things do need to be cleaned up.
I’m hoping for pre-con. Planning on coming in Tuesday, so a late Tuesday or Wed afternoon shift would be ideal.
-

You get Sunday. I don't know what the shift did since I did an earlier shift. I started out by asking for the latest shift on Sunday thinking it would be like 5pm. The scheduler said that the latest shift is at 11. I said 11 in the morning? He said 11pm. A little late for me so I got an earlier shift.

Exactly. If you can volunteer after registration, then you can volunteer before it too.
-
Well, if you take the Sunday 11 PM shift then at least then it won't cut into your con time that day. :P
I have been offered as late as 3:30-6:30 or 4-7 on Sundays. One year I got a 3:30-5.
-
So I checked off that I wanted to have pre con shifts for volunteering, and I assume that those are offered as they are needed. I'm just doing some preliminary number crunching for flights and I was wondering, based on people who have volunteered in the past, if you check off that your interested in volunteering for pre-con shifts, what is the likelihood of actually getting one of those shifts? Is it first come first serve, or is there a strong chance anyone who wants to volunteer those days can so long as they checked off their interest?
-

For the last 3 years, I checked that I wanted a pre-con shift and I have gotten one each year. Once the pre-con shift sign up opens, it is first-come. Last year I was a bit late with signing up after I received the email, and still got a pre-con shift. I was super happy to get that one!

A couple questions about this:
1) When does the signup usually occur? (If there is a usual time)
2) Do you get advanced notice of it, or do they simply send an email saying it’s now open?
3) How much flexibility do you get in choosing a shift? Can you say “I want anything in the morning” or “I only want indoor assignments” or “I prefer to volunteer at the Marriott Marquis”
4) Unforeseen circumstances come up, so how flexible are they to changing assignments?
-

Depends on the year. It is first come first served. My first year, the window closed relatively quickly and I didn't get it during that opening. Luckily that was the one and only year they had a second round of pre-con shifts. So I got in on that. This year, the window was opened fairly long. Still I had a bot running that checked every 2 seconds so I signed up for it right away. So who knows how long the pre-con shift window will be opened next year.

Last year:
1. The email about pre-con shifts came about a couple of weeks before the convention. I had to make travel arrangements earlier, so I always come in a few days early anyway.
2. They sent out an email and...it's time to go a sign up.
3. There were selections to make for days available, and additional selections for general time slots, for instance 7am-11am. I didn't see anything to be able to select a certain location. If there is a disability involved, there was space to include information about that, for instance, limitations for standing, walking long distance, lifting...
4. The last one I don't have experience with-- changing assignments. I have heard that many departments are flexible if you let them know as far in advance as possible. Of course in emergencies that is something that cannot be helped. I have heard they are good about that kind of thing.

Volunteer registration was apparently closed by the time of open reg this morning, so 9 days. It was 14 last year and 4 the year before, but I think it’s safe to say that volunteering is no longer as crazy as getting badges.
That said, I wonder if it’s safe to skip it (and lose priority volunteer reg) and just manually sign up again through the interest list.

I saw that yesterday, and went in an checked. It appeared to still be up, and appears that way to me this morning. Maybe it was down during the sale, or someone that didn't sign up was the one checking? Was there a screenshot at all?

Thanks for the update! That is good to know. I don’t have a screenshot. I was going by this post (as well as a couple outside ones that said the same): https://www.friendsofcc.com/forum/index.php?topic=10013.msg259701#msg259701

I didn't think to take a screenshot at the time, but I wished I remembered to have done so. Sorry about that, everyone! I was a bit pre-occupied with some spinning blue circles of death and group chats during open registration. >___<;;;
My best guess is that it was likely down for the sale though...

It is still open as of now.

My guess is no, since they don't have a badge in advance to qualify.

Good to know. How did they verify that in the Member ID account?

It just has to say "CC'19 Registered Volunteer" with green letters on the top right corner.
Then whenever the exclusive tab opens up , it would say right there that you are eligible to enter the lottery.
I was also able to enter the conan lottery with the attendee code CCI sends :)

That's terrific! I'm glad to hear that CCI is taking care of its volunteers.

Yes they are.

That's the big thing about being a volunteer, you can have a badge for any day you want. Since you can volunteer for any day you want.

Almost everyone in CCI is a volunteer. CCI is a volunteer organization.

Just a quick forum tip...
You can actually add more than one quote into your reply to respond to more than one person (or multiple posts). It's pretty easy and convenient. ^__~
These instructions are specific for when you're using a computer browser. (Tapatalk uses a different method when responding to more than one post in your reply.)
If you use the "Quick Reply" box at the bottom of the page, you can click on the "Quote" button on each post, and then the post will automatically be added to the "Quick Reply" box.
You just have to make sure, when you respond to each post, that you hit the "Enter" button on your keyboard a few times between the quoted posts. The ending quote tag looks like this: [/quote] (Hit the "Enter" button a few times after that.)
Otherwise, everything in your own reply will be squished together.
If you're using the full "Reply" page (not the "Quick Reply" box at the bottom of the page in a thread), then you can scroll down to each post below your reply text box and click on "Insert Quote" on the right side of the post. Doing this adds the quoted post to your reply text box automatically.
Again, make sure to hit the "Enter" button a few times after the closing/ending [/quote] tag, or your reply will be squished together when you submit your post.
Hope this helps!

Another benefit of a volunteer badge is even though it's only active on the days you do a shift, it says 4 day + preview night on it. Which is a big plus for offsites that require people to have a valid badge on the day they visit. You can go any day you want even if you don't do a shift that day.

The Comic-Con 2019 volunteer program is full. There will be no further opportunities to volunteer for Comic-Con 2019. We thank you for your interest in the Comic-Con 2019 volunteer program!
Comic-Con Volunteer Program
The Comic-Con 2019 volunteer program is now full and registration is closed. At this time, there are no further opportunities to volunteer at Comic-Con 2019.
To register as a volunteer for Comic-Con, you must be on the Volunteer Priority List or the Volunteer Interest List. The Volunteer Priority List is comprised of returning volunteers who completed at least one volunteer assignment at Comic-Con the year prior. Both of these lists are currently closed.
If you are interested in volunteering for Comic-Con 2020, you will have the opportunity to sign up for Volunteer Interest List shortly after Comic-Con 2019. The Interest List is limited and does not guarantee admission into the volunteer program. Please check this page regularly for updates on the Comic-Con 2020 volunteer program as they become available.
If you were unable to register for the Comic-Con 2019 volunteer program, there will be another opportunity available for you to volunteer at WonderCon Anaheim 2019 (March 29 - March 31, 2019)! Information regarding volunteer opportunities at WonderCon Anaheim 2019 will be available on the WonderCon Anaheim Volunteers page, and on our social media sites, in early 2019. Watch for it!
We thank ALL of our volunteers – past, present, and future – for their help and enthusiasm in making Comic-Con and WonderCon Anaheim great experiences for all!

Volunteer registration went live on Nov 1. If it closed today, that means it was open for nearly a full month.
I think it's safe to say the first bubble has deflated.
-
I guessing that this is the first time it was open for so long before it got filled for any year.

First time volunteer, 2nd Con
I understand there is an email to sign up for pre con shifts. I assume we'll get one with where the volunteer HQ will be, yes? I got a good shot at MMM in hotel sale (no jinx) , so if there again would be awesome.
So far, I think the process is, we go to HQ to sign up for a shift, then go back to sign in for the shift, get escorted to location and then go back and sign out, is that the gist?

Yes, there will be a email calling for pre-con shifters at some point. That's my next anticipation pressure point. 2 years ago it didn't stay open very long but then there was a miraculous second call. Last year, it stayed open for a while.
Pretty much. You sign up for a shift at HQ for later that day or the next day. You show up back at HQ to sign in for your shift. You are escorted to the location to do the shift unless your shift is at HQ or you are on in the stand by group. Some volunteers hang out at HQ just in case they need to be sent somewhere that needs help. When you are done with your shift you are dismissed and leave. There's no sign out.
-
Last year pre-con shift opportunity went out 6/28 and assignments were received 7/6, if anyone's curious. I always get nervous about whether I forgot to tick the box.

sadly, I can't get there before Wed night. You mentioned sign up for shift for the next day, do they give you that days badge at that time? or do you have to go back, wondering about how to balance Hall H lines, etc.
-
What’s the earliest timeslot available? We plan on getting in Tuesday afternoon, so I’d like to do a shift before Preview Night.

It really depends on their needs. I've seen pre-con shifts as early as 8am. Generally they start around 10am.

You can get a badge even before you do a shift. Or do shifts before you have a badge. The badge is only a RFID carrier. It's whether that RFID is active for that day in the system. Once you sign up for a shift, your badge will be active for that day whether that day is today or tomorrow. If you do a pre-con shift then you pick any day and that day is active.

That's going to be tight. Also last year there was a mix up where people got shifts other than what they signed up for. It didn't happen to me. I got what I asked for but it did happen to others.
Since you have preview night then you must have the full set of passes. So are you doing a volunteer shift just to stay a volunteer? If so, I find that Sunday post-con is the most convenient to avoid missing any of the con. It's much easier to schedule than a pre-con shift.

Yup, I'm doing it to get priority status for next year, as I feel like my luck with getting badges is bound to run out at some point (I felt extremely lucky this year because I only got badges due to the last minute group I formed). I wouldn't mind Sunday, or even an evening one after the main hall closes (there are night time slots, correct?). But ideally, I'd be gunning for Wednesday before Preview Night.

The last two years I had a 4-day badge (with PN in 2017, without in 2018) but wanted to volunteer the same reason...to keep priority status. I somehow got a shift from 2-5 PM Wednesday both years. Timing wise it was perfect, however, in 2017 going straight from my volunteer shift to PN ended up being a bit tiring and honestly kind of threw off the pace for the entire weekend. It was fine in 2018 though as I didn't have PN so I got to regroup in the evening.
This year I have 4 day + PN again and I want to fully enjoy the con so I'm just going to chance it and not volunteer. My rationale is that volunteer registration stayed open nearly a month this year, so priority status is no longer a huge advantage. (Of course, anything can happen and it could start filling up right away again -- but I don't see that happening. I think the peak is over.)
-

There are very few night time shifts after the main hall closes. As I pointed out with pre-con shifts, it's all about what they need. Chances are most of the convention center volunteer work will be over, but there may be opportunities at the Horton Grand (for the various panels and showings there) or a few of the other offsite locales.

There are night slots. The latest shift I was offered was like 11:15pm or something like that. Aren't some of the viewing rooms open 24 hours? They probably need people to make sure those manga watchers don't get too rowdy.
Sunday right after the exhibit closes is a popular shift for people looking to maintain their volunteer status. I've met so many people on that shift that are doing that. There are a variety of things that still need doing like handing out t-shirts, handing out premiums and the always needed directing people where to go. Just be ready to do whatever needs to be done. I haven't done what I signed up for on that shift. I end up doing something else. Which is fine by me.
As I said, it's a popular shift so there will be more volunteers than needed. Which can be kind of boring since there's not enough work to go around. Last year, there were 4 of us doing the same job.

Yep I mentioned the viewing rooms, also as you state with when the convention center closes, they still need volunteers for line management for the Programming Premiums Room. And then there is the Programming Premiums Room itself that needs volunteers for after the convention center closes.

Same here. Volunteering is my backup.
I'm thinking about signing up for more shifts. The past 2 years I got a pre-con shift, and got BBL (Bags, Books, and Lanyards). One year I signed up for another shift in the evening, and was a 'runner' for one of the evening panels. I liked it.

BBL is one of the less fun shifts, BUT I tell people if you get to do it pre-con, it's actually really nice. Since it's usually fairly quiet and calm. Being a runner can be super fun. I could suggest some shifts for everybody, but I'd probably be breaking some unwritten rules. But suffice to say there are some jobs that you wouldn't believe you could get and be doing....(in a good way.)

Is it true you get to choose the bag you want if you do the BBL shift?
-
Last year I really liked doing BBL pre-con because I got to see all of the bags and pins, and folded Jason Momoa like a thousand times.... :)
-
Is it true you get to choose the bag you want if you do the BBL shift?
Yes.
It's easy to do. You just take the bag and pin you want, and put it away.
-
Yes.

I will say I wish I knew someone who worked BBL when I picked-up my bag. I never get a good bag :P Or a good pin for that matter haha.
-
Those bags always end up torn by the end of the con, I got 4 that I don't even use lol
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
-
Is it true you get to choose the bag you want if you do the BBL shift?
Some people said they did. I asked during my shift and they said no. At my post-con shift they did put out a bunch of leftover bags and said we could all take one.
-
Yes.

The thing is, no one is allowed to pick their own bag. They drill that into our heads over and over. You hand someone a bag. If they ask to swap to another one, you tell them you can't. If they make a scene you call over the supervisor for that area to deal with it. I've had people ignore the bag I offer them and then dig through the pile for the one they want.
So it's not suppose to happen. Does it? I've seen it. But there's a difference between working that area as a volunteer and going through bag pickup as an attendee. The two shouldn't mix.
Last year I saw a couple of volunteers walk off with one of each bag. IMO, that's stealing.

For the record, if you saw that, I would have quickly gone to your Lead or your Volunteer Coordinator immediately. The last couple of years due to the pins, SDCC has been running out of bags. If your bag breaks, then that's legitimate. But a volunteer should not be walking off with multiple bags.
-
Some people said they did. I asked during my shift and they said no. At my post-con shift they did put out a bunch of leftover bags and said we could all take one.
I guess the key is not to ask. As an attendee, you're entitled to a bag. During my shift, I would put my bag to the side, and pick it up after my shift was over. However, I only took one bag, and supervisors never gave me a problem.
-

Chances are the supervisors/staff are cool with you picking your own bag and pin. They're also usually cool with helping other SDCC staff members out as well.
Now if you're just an attendee or a regular daily volunteer (and you're not working BBL) then they would give you a problem for asking for a specific bag. But again, if you're on your shift, and you put a specific bag aside for yourself, you're okay. You're not the first, nor last to have ever done that.
Staff members will come up asking for a specific bag, talking to the supervisor or lead will sometimes do the trick as well. Often times the daily volunteers don't know what to do and direct a staff member to the lead, and they'll get the bag they want, and that's okay also.
-

I wasn't sure what was going on. It happened during the first few minutes of my first shift in that area. At first, I thought they were getting bags to fold. It was strange that they asked other people if they'd seen so and so bag. But then they walked off with an armful of bags. Even then I wasn't sure since people have posted that they were allowed to take an extra bag at the end of their shift. That's why I asked during my shift. It wasn't until a few minutes later that everything clicked.
-
What kinds of jobs do they have volunteers do pre-con other then bags?

There are two times where this is acceptable. If the volunteers were grabbing multiple bags for a certain department at SDCC. Like they were asked to bring certain bags to a staff member. That I have seen happen and is okay. (Though this is more on the side of rarely happening. Usually a staffer will come get X amount of bags, it usually is not a volunteer taking them and bringing them somewhere else) The second instance is late Sunday, and there are a gazillion extra bags leftover, which as the last two years show, that is no longer the case.
Now as for people posting about taking an extra bag, whomever was the shift supervisor or lead, they really shouldn't have authorized that (if they did.) Again, only because the bags due to the pins are at such a premium now. Prior to the pins, you could keep getting replacement bags, heck I went through 4 in one day one year. It happens. Now, with the pins, it's a much harder fight.
What kinds of jobs do they have volunteers do pre-con other then bags?
There are a multitude of jobs besides BBL. There is actual SDCC setup, line management setup, loading and offloading of boxes/pallets, and ticket ripping. These are just some of the pre-con shifts.
-
I have a question. Ive never volunteered before but I heard that volunteers get sent a link to purchase parking for the con. Just curious if it’s true?
Umm....I want to reply with a humongous laugh. Who told you this? I've pretty much heard it all, but this is a new one for me. No, volunteers do not get any special perks for parking. Getting the free badge IS the only perk.

Agreed, i have tried for years to figure out a way of getting underground parking to no avail.....

-
Wait, isn't there a t-shirt too? ;)
Indeed I stand corrected, yes, there is a shirt. Something that I always wait till the end to get and my size is always gone. Other than Fundays, I never have a chance to towards MGH to get my shirt during the beginning of the con. Just way too busy.
-
What kinds of jobs do they have volunteers do pre-con other then bags?
Bags encompasses a bunch of jobs from folding bags to moving boxes to handing out bags. There's also portals, make sure everyone taps in and out, and of course the always needed directing people where to go.
-
Wait, isn't there a t-shirt too? ;)
Let's not forget the very best perk, the warm fuzzy satisfaction of a job well done.

I would too to at least see what they have to offer. Its a great gig but be aware its basically working a job at con and has more responsibilities. You'll have a lot more freedom as a regular volunteer to do whatever you want and see during con. So if you're the type that there is a thing you HAVE to see or do it may not be for you.
-
Not being a local, I am always a bit jelly of those who receive these invitations. Love to volunteer and would like to discover what being a department volunteer entails. I realize it is more work...but then...more fun??!! :D

So is it only 'locals' that get that invitation? And what is considered 'local'.
I understand if there is that limitation. I'm on the other side of the country. That kind of invite would mean airfare AND hotel for me. :) :)

Correct, suffice to say I know of those who work from 7am to 8pm......I won't say who that is...but trust me, I know of people who do. It doesn't really give you the time to enjoy the con, but this is really for those who don't care so much about the con itself, but to give back to the con.

You shouldn't, it doesn't matter if you're local or not. I know many who are not local. I will say, do not expect more "fun." It really isn't. It's MUCH MUCH MUCH more work, plain and simple. More responsibility than ever. And depending on the department, you may not have time to go enjoy the con at all.
So is it only 'locals' that get that invitation? And what is considered 'local'.
I understand if there is that limitation. I'm on the other side of the country. That kind of invite would mean airfare AND hotel for me. :) :)
As I stated above, it's not locals only. There is no limitation per se. If you're already coming to SDCC, then airfare and hotel would be paid for either way by you. The difference being, again, you really may not get to see/enjoy much of the con depending on the department.
I got one last year and I’m not local (though I’m not terribly far.)
It really depends on what department you got assigned as a daily, if they gave you a great score, took notice of you, or otherwise you stood out in some form or fashion. Not everyone gets the email. If you do, I always push everybody to attend. I will not spoil or tell everyone what happens at these events, but again, I am telling you to go for a reason. Take that how you want...... ;)

By 'airfare and hotel' I meant for the additional volunteer department recruiting event.
-

Ahh yes, correct. It really depends on your line of thinking. If you think ten years down the line, you'd be happy being a department volunteer for a decade, then you should definitely spend the money. If you think that may be too much, then not worth it. It boils down to how much of the actual con you care about.
-
Last year I was invited to this event (after my first time attending and volunteering at the con) and I was so excited about it! Sadly I couldn't go to San Diego on that day. I think I stand out in 2017 in my shift at portals
Since I just volunteered on preview night in 2018, and on a different department (BBL this year) I think this time I didn't stand out and that's why I didn't got the email this year :/

It’s a different commitment than regular volunteering. They only want the best volunteers so someone thought you were exceptional. I love it and would encourage anyone to attend, listen and decide if it is for you.

Oh boy it is. It's vastly different. I'm joking, but it's signing your life away to SDCC ;) Well actually I'd say it depends on the department. But agreed on the exceptional aspect. Someone who had some clout deemed you worthy to potentially come back as a department volunteer. And I too always encourage anyone and everyone who gets the invite to go.

Well, I'm extremely honored now. If I were to get an invite again, would you recommend going even if travel costs are required?

See, I can't tell someone to spend their hard-earned money. I have no right to tell you or anyone what to do. I will say there are multiple variables. A) how much those travel costs are. B) if you think you'd be happy being a department volunteer (meaning you work many more hours, and may not be able tom see much if any of the con) That's worst case scenario, but depending on the department, it's a possibility.

Fair enough. Thank you for the detailed analysis. :)

You're welcome. If money isn't an issue, then again, I highly suggest attending, just to put your feet into the water, and have a feel for things.

I think the question should be phrased, "If you were I, what would you do?"

That's easy. I would plop the money down, and go to the event. It's a one time thing with the money, and can potentially open up doors you never thought possible.......But that's easy for me to say. I have a decent job and have been saving since college. Not everyone is as lucky as I. SDCC is not important in the grand scheme of things, food, shelter, and family are. Now if you have extra money....then SDCC and this event is worth it ;)

Does anyone know if theres notice before pre con volunteering emails go out? about when does it happen? my first time volunteering and I would like to be able to get a choice of what day to pick.

Not in my experience. The call goes out when the call goes out. We still should be weeks away from it. Unless they do as the offsites have been doing and go early.
2 years ago, the call went out and closed really quickly. But there was a second round of calls later on. Last year the window was open a long time before closing. Which mirrors how the volunteer registration has been going. If that holds up then this year hopefully will be another long window and it won't be a quick dash that lasts a few minutes.
I have always gotten the day and shift I asked for. It has been reported that some people not only don't get the shift they ask for but not even the day.
-
So for anyone that's volunteered in the past, what's that first day of volunteering like? Specifically, what do you do your first day when you show up? Walk up to the front door? How does that procedure work?
-

Your first day is pretty much the same as everyday you volunteer. You go to volunteer HQ and check in for your shift. Then someone will lead you to where you will be working unless you are part of the rapid response squad then you sit in volunteer HQ in case there's any rapid responding needed.
The difference between the first day and all the other days is that you pickup your badge and bag full of goodies. Unless your first day is a pre-con shift then you don't pick up a badge since it probably won't be available for pickup yet.
In general you go to volunteer HQ to sign up for a shift and then return to check in for your shift. Rinse and repeat as desired.
-
So, as a volunteer its up to us to decide how many days to work? and they give a badge for each day of volunteering correct? first time volunteering after 3 years, time to give something back lol

I went to the recruiting event today. About the same amount of people were there as last year. As is my constant, I didn't win anything in the raffle. Raffles are not kind to me. Pizza is always a good thing. The crowd didn't seem as social as it was last year. It was quieter. Most people just kept to themselves. You can't shut me up so I was jabbering to anyone who would listen. I met a surprising number of people who have been to the recruiting event more than once. I think most of the people I talk to had. Last year, I only met one person who had.
My brain was mush today. I blame it on the haggis. I couldn't remember the simplest things. How long have you been volunteering? Wait... let me think. Turns out the number I gave was off by a year. What jobs did you do last year? For the life of me, I couldn't remember them all. Still can't. What is your favorite panel of all time? Ah.... hm...... this one. What is your second favorite panel of all time? Silence inside my head. I had to rack my brain and my brain wasn't helping.

So let me explain a few things. In terms of the number of people who have come to the recruiting event more than once. They're usually in two camps. A) they're there just for free food/raffle. Will never actually want to become a department volunteer. B) Not picked to join a department/didn't make it through the interview stage. In my mind, A is MUCH better than B.
As for the answers to the questions, always relax. I know that's easier said than done. Relax and BE CONFIDENT. I cannot stress that enough. Be confident in your answers.

[member=8035]taka[/member] - Yes, you can volunteer for every day or just one day. You get a badge for each day you work. I am with you. I have a full badge, yet really like the opportunity to help 'bring the show'!
:)

What do they raffle?
It differs every year. Stand in the toy section of Gamestop and you get the idea. This year it was Star Wars themed. Not exclusively but majority.

Oh I understand all that. I've spoken to people in B who are there for A. But people are also there for other reasons as well. Some are holding out for a particular department. Which leads to another group. People looking to switch departments.
-
I've spoken to people in B who are there for A. But people are also there for other reasons as well. Some are holding out for a particular department. Which leads to another group. People looking to switch departments.
I don't know if I agree with this. For one simple reason. You don't switch departments by going to this event. Once you're a department volunteer, you do not get access anymore to this event. It is basically a recruiting event to get dailies into becoming department volunteers. (Now I cannot speak for those department volunteers that may have found a loophole or snuck in) but to gain a true invite, you have to be a daily. Switching departments isn't what this event is for. Usually switching departments requires quite a bit of work. I can explain that later if you'd like.
Anyways, to your first point about people holding out for a particular department. That goes with what I said about people B. They didn't do well in the interview or somehow did not get picked. As the daily, you have the option of what department(s) you'd like to apply for. So the onus is on the daily to hit a homerun sort of speak, to get into said department :)
This is coming from many, many years of experience/knowledge.
-

Having hired my fair share of people over the decades, I would say the onus is on both sides to hit a "homerun". Many people early in their careers don't get this, but an interview is a 2 way street. The potential employer has to sell themselves as much as the potential employee. More so if they are in an industry chronically short of qualified workers. Having worked in high growth industries, I know that feeling well.
So the onus is also on the departments to make themselves appealing. I know this is not lost on the departments since I've had at least one interviewer say as much to me. Not doing so, leads to people being in your category A.
-
Have there been any volunteer notifications about whether or not you have been selected or not? I haven't received anything yet. Does anyone know approximately when they usually send out notifications?

I'm not going to go too off-topic on this, but you're comparing apples to oranges. For starters you mentioned an industry chronically short of qualified workers. A department volunteer at SDCC does not need a 4 year degree to become a good worker. Secondly, there's no shortness of qualified people, because there's very few qualifications. As long as you work hard, and you can generally fit in with other people, you're pretty good as is.
Another thing, you mentioned the employer has to sell themselves. Maybe some individual department does, but knowing the perks involved, free badge, potential for better perks down the line. Not every department needs to sell itself. Now, there are some departments that do, but only because the job isn't one that a lot of people may want or like. There are many departments that are in so high demand, they don't even attend this event, because they either don't need to recruit, or the department head hand picks who he/she wants outside of this event.
Finally, in your stance, an employer has to sell themselves because there are more contributing factors. Cost of living, salary, location. Many things. SDCC is 5 days at the same place every year. It's not life altering. Plus, if it wasn't down to invites, and any daily volunteer could show, there would be no less than thousands of people. In that case, why would the employer again, need to sell themselves? If Person A doesn't like it, go onto Person B. Someone will be a good fit. Now I'm not discrediting the interviewer you spoke to, I don't know who or what department it was. But like I said, from my experience with SDCC, if the person said that to you, it was because it's a department that isn't highly sought after, then I can see the need for selling. But the highly sought after departments have no need to sell, volunteers will go try and join them because they know how good they could have it in that department.
-

It's only been a day. :) If last year is any indication, it should be early next week. I was actually surprised how quickly it came.

A day since what? I think I must have missed something. I did get notification that I was registered as a volunteer (a few months ago), but haven't received anything since then.

Haha, you guys both misunderstood each other. What [member=6586]chocolateshake[/member] thought you were asking about, is whether or not you got picked to become a department volunteer. That event was Saturday (yesterday) hence a day.
What you're asking, is about being a daily volunteer at SDCC. Question are you a returning volunteer? Or is this your first time? If you're returning, you're automatically accepted in. If it's your first time, and you got in your request soon enough, you should hear back closer from the con, but you also will be a volunteer.

Yes, this is my first time as a volunteer. Will keep a lookout as the con gets closer.

I rather not go too far off topic as well. Let's just say we have different viewpoints. Nothing wrong with that. It's what makes life interesting. It would be boring if everyone thought the same about everything.

Granted, it's been a while since my first time so I really don't remember. Mush brain you know. But aren't you set then? There's no selection to be made. You're in. Like all volunteers, new and returning, we should get an email close to the con telling us where to show up to check in, get badged and sign up for a shift.
Don't forget to be on the look out for the pre-con shift email if you are local. Doing a pre-con shift is a real bonus. It frees up an entire day.

Cool. I just didn't know exactly how the process worked since this is my first time. I would love to get a pre-con shift as I am local. Thanks for clearing my confusion up :)

so if I was able to get a precon gig, and I get to choose what day I wanted, do I get the badge on Wednesday or on the day that I pick? Im wondering because I don't have Saturday and want to do Hall H for that day so I need the badge before Friday night.

When you do a pre-con assignment, you get a badge for ANY day you'd like. Many people who do pre-con assignments tend to pick Saturday or Friday because they're the highest sought-after days.

You get to pick any day. Think of it as having a day in the bank and you get to choose when to use it. Just tell them which day you want. You don't have to choose right after the shift, you can tell them which day you want. You could show up on Sunday morning and ask them to activate your badge for Sunday.
I guess you want it by Friday night so you can be in the Hall H overnight line. Getting a badge and having it active are different things. When you check in as a volunteer you will get a 4 day badge. It will only be active for any day you do a shift or have a day banked from pre-con. So unless it's run through a RFID scanner like at a portal, no one can tell if it's activated or not. Which makes it good for things like going to offsites that require a badge. I don't know how Hall H lines work, I don't stand in them. Do they scan badges to let you in? Otherwise, you should only need the badge active for the day of the panel when you go through a portal.

Sadly that is not an option. Technically speaking, Preview Night isn’t even considered a “real” day for SDCC. Since it’s only a “preview” of things to come. But back to your question, that is the only day that you cannot pick. Back when volunteers could attend preview night, it was also one of the most popular volunteer shifts. If you gave up your preview night, and worked a shift, you’d get two yes TWO free days inside the con. Which again, most people would pick Friday and Saturday. Also due to the fact Thursday and Sunday are easier days in general.
-
I did the Premium programming room inside MGH last year friday 12pm and it was so slow! not many people come to pick up their freebies. I also did the same job the year before but saturday 5PM and that one was really busy and I actually loved the busy 5pm saturday. I'm prob going to request that again this year :D

two years ago I heard from a volunteer that he worked two or three days (can't remember) and he said he got a 4 day badge, is any of this true?
Thanks!

Everyone gets one named badge at sign up. It's precoded for all days of the convention. It's not activated for all days.

Here's a recap of what happens next:
-

In general, not true. BUT, and this is the caveat. It doesn't mean it's not possible. I will not share how or what needs to be done, but is it possible to get a 4 day badge only having worked two or three days? Yes. I will not state how, since I don't want that information leaked out. And let me preface that by saying, I personally have NEVER done it, will not do it, and believe anyone who gets away with it should be lucky not to be caught.

In the past when I’ve volunteered a precon shift, I usually go after 1 the day before what I want. For example, if I want Saturday as my day, I go Friday after 1, and request my day.
-
So for people who have volunteered in the past, what shift do you feel was the most popular? My gut says that it would be the Hall H events or the Exclusives table.

Can we request that as our first choice if we never volunteered before?

I don't see why not. I've always had my request accepted, even the first time. Now whether I ended up working what was scheduled is another thing. I've been intercepted a couple of times on the way to my scheduled assignment to work in another area.

Last year they went out on 6/28. So a couple of weeks before.
-

Yeah totally! past few years there were a lot new ppl there. The only thing is the staff would ask who has done the job before and those that have done the job before get to stay inside on the tables handing out the freebies. The new ppl get to hold a sign somewhere near around the MGH directing ppl where the room is located. But it is possible for a newbie to stay inside at the tables, that was my case 4 years ago and I've been doing the same job since, I love it! :D
-
what would be a good assignment for a newbie? It will be my first time, have a 4 day badge but was looking to get something on thursday
-
Also what are good positions for a newbie who can't lift that much either!

You generally get to pick the time or the job, not both. So if you want a particular time, they assign you a job that needs doing at that time. If you want a particular job, then they'll assign a time when that job needs doing. So decide what's more important to you, the time when you do it or the job you do.
If you have a 4 day badge, then you don't need to do a shift to have a comic-con pass for any day. Sunday post-con is a popular shift for people with 4 day badges since then they don't have to miss any of the con.
Also what are good positions for a newbie who can't lift that much either!
There are plenty of jobs to do that don't require lifting. Such as holding up a sign, reminding people to tap in and out at portals and, as it's called by many daily volunteers, being a "human traffic cone". They are many others. There's no shortage of jobs to do that don't require lifting.
But as I said above, what's more important to you. The time you do it or the job you do?

Sunday post-con sounds tempting, any clue to what kind of jobs there? I'm coming from mexico and my speaking abilities are not that great lol looking for something where I dont have to be chatty

That's easy. Line management. One job is just standing there holding a sign. Occasionally someone might ask you a question but on Sunday, post-con, that's rare.

Line management can also include to sort and compress the line or prevent people to cut it.

We can Volunteer for Hall H? is that the people making sure no phones are recording?

We can Volunteer for Hall H? is that the people making sure no phones are recording?
That job is up to security and actual SDCC Staff. There are no positions for volunteers inside Hall H to monitor for videos being recorded. Technically, there aren't many jobs specifically tied to Hall H, since there isn't that big of a need. Most volunteers near Hall H either work for line management, or are those dealing with bathroom tickets. (But both of these jobs aren't again specifically tied to Hall H)

how long do you usually have to volunteer? And does that qualify us for returning registration?

Each shift is 3 hours long and no, volunteering does not qualify you for returning registration

and if I come in on Wednesday and do a shift, I can pick Friday as my free day. Then come in Thursday and pick Saturday as my free day....It works like that right? Can I do two shifts on Wednesday and pick Friday and Saturday?

No, you have a free day if you do a pre-con shift. Your free day can be any day of the con. Any other you only have badge to enter the con the day you volunteer. You can only volunteer one shift per day.
-
really? cause when I volunteered last year on Wednesday, the woman asked me what day I would like. I didn't choose cause I already had a ticket

So I'm a bit confused. I was under the impression that Wednesday shifts are not considered pre con shifts. And even if we did a shift on Wednesday we didn't qualify for a free day.
If I've just been wrong on all this then does anyone know or remember if there are pre con shifts available in the evening on Wednesday? I don get into SD until like 7PM.
-
My wife is on the Priority Volunteer list from volunteering last year. She purchased a Sunday badge.
If she puts in for the Exclusive Portal for slots on the days she plans to volunteer (every day but Sunday), and gets them, does it matter if her badge that day is a Volunteer badge?
Thanks,
G

It doesn't matter as long as she completed a shift on the day she got the exclusive for.

In the past, working on Wednesday got you a "free" badge for Th, Fr, Sat, or Sun. That's how it worked for me the past two years.
If it works like it has in the past, pre-Con shifts, including Wed night shifts, will be made available by responding to an email calling for pre-Con volunteers. This email hasn't been sent out yet this year. To get this email, I believe you needed to have marked in your volunteer application that you were interested in pre-Con shifts. Even if you sign up for the pre-Con shift, there's no guarantee you'll get it. Those approved will get some a confirmation email with pre-con shift details.
-
I'd expect the precon to go out tomorrow or Monday, since the portal has opened up today.
The signups have been via a Google form link.
Last year's link said "Comic-Con 2018: Pre-Convention Assignments - Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday" and the body of the email confirmed the free day
If you are scheduled, we will contact you by email with date, time and location. After you complete the assignment, you will get ONE complimentary day of your choice during the show (Thursday-Sunday July 19-22, 2018). If you do not hear back from us, that means you did not get a pre-convention assignment, but no worries. This does not affect your status as a volunteer for the days of the show.

The only thing that matters is if she has a badge that gets her on the floor.

do I have a few hours to reply to the pre-con email or will it fill up fast?. or do they do a lottery?

do I have a few hours to reply to the pre-con email or will it fill up fast?. or do they do a lottery?
No lottery, first come first served. Last year it stayed open a while, no rush. The year before that, it came and went quickly. I missed it but luckily they had a second round and I caught that wave. It's my understanding that was the first and only second round ever. As with everything comic-con, it's best to assume that it will close in seconds.
-

You can reply whenever, but usually you have to get in within the first hour to actually get a pre-con assignment. It also depends on which times you are available.
-
I really like pre-con shifts. You get to see things go up, and it is the quiet before the storm. Last year we got a quick walk through the exhibit hall, too. Nice!

We got an early look at the books, bags and lanyards ;) and an empty sails .....
that was on a monday afternoon

If you are scheduled, we will contact you by email to confirm. If you are not assigned you will NOT get an email.
Note that daily volunteers, including those with pre-convention assignments, do not get to attend Wednesday's Preview Night unless they have already purchased a ticket.
After you complete a pre-convention assignment, you may choose ONE complimentary day (Thursday, Friday, Saturday or Sunday) during the convention. Whether or not you receive or complete a pre-convention assignment, you are welcome to volunteer on any or all of the four days during the convention (Thursday – Sunday, July 18 – 21, 2019).
Thank you for volunteering and we look forward to seeing you at Comic-Con 2019!

So how long does it take to hear back about pre-con assignments?
Last year pre-con email was sent 6/28. I received confirmation of pre-con shift 7/6. I expect a similar timeframe this year, or sooner.
What did you all sign up for? I checked available all day Mon-Tues-Wed.

Regular Child badge policy is 2 Child badges per paid adult.

From the Volunteer packet pdf
Children: An adult volunteer may bring one (1) child age 12 or under with them. The volunteer must be the parent or legal guardian of said child. We will make a badge for the child and he/she may stay with the volunteer during their assignment. The child may NOT do anything such as hand out lanyards or bags. This is a liability issue and must be respected.
Also an email response,
Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.
The email term for "volunteer with you" doesn't mean they can't go with you.

So my flight gets into SD around 7, and there’s a solid chance I may not get to my hotel until 7:30, so is there still a good chance if I requested an evening slot for Wednesday I could get it? Or will it just in super high demand?

I saw the e-mail resting from lunch, about 15 minutes after they send it. Signed up for monday and tuesday.

it's doubtful they'll have any slots open
here's the times they gave us the option to pick

Thank you for checking up Sam. I was late to the party on it so I put the early shift on Tuesday to have a better chance. I’ll still be on east coast time so that 7am start time is not a big deal.
-
I signed up maybe 15-20 minutes after the email was sent...chose anytime on Tuesday and (I think) 2 slots on Wednesday (I don't have PN). Hope I get lucky this year!
-
Does anyone know what happens if we submit an entry twice?
I saw the email and immediately went to the form to submit my entry on my phone. It wasn't until afterwards that I realized that I had volunteered for Wednesday slots that might overlap with Preview Night. I have access to Preview Night this year so I'd really like to attend that if possible.
Would SDCC take the second timestamp on the form? Or would they take the first but choose from the second form's time slots?
-
I signed up at about 12:55PM Pacific Time. I put Tuesday 2:00PM to 9:00PM and Wednesday anytime. Then I went back in and filled it out again and put Anytime on all 3 days. Not sure if that will make two separate submissions or update the original submission.
-
Yup, like most here, I signed up within 10 minutes of receiving the email (12:47PM PST). My sis signed up maybe a half hour later. I get in Tuesday evening, so I could only check off the boxes for Wed 10-4 & Wed 12-6. I’m hopeful for something then, but if I have to do a during-Con shift, I’m gonna aim for Thursday

After thinking about the situation, I realized that your advice is the best solution for this minor crisis that I have inadvertently caused. I was really tempted to put in a second entry but didn't want to make the pre-con assignment process even more complicated by showing up in their list of submitted entries twice.
Hopefully they'll be lenient to an over-excited volunteer...
Thanks for the wise words!
-
Daughter and I both signed up within 2 minutes of getting the email. We tried for Tuesday and Wednesday hopefully we can get at least one since daughter only has a Sunday badge.

Got in about 4 minutes after getting the email. Signed up for all cause I'm on vacation there anyway. But I'm really hoping I get something after 7am hahaha.

Has anyone been denied a shift as long as they were able to sign up? I've heard people getting assigned shifts on days they didn't even say they could do, but off hand I can't remember anyone being denied completely.
I signed up really late. I'm too busy to stay on top of these things and my pre-con bot locked up since the email got tagged as spam and it was ignored. I whitelisted it out of spam and my bot dutifully notified me about 10 hours late.

borken bots.....
i haven't heard of anyone getting denied, just that it filled up prior submission. I've also found a quick email to Sue about scheduling issues seemed to straighten everything out.
ie. 'hey i accidentally signed up for XXX but i can't do it.' etc all

I've also found a quick email to Sue....
Everyone make sure to give a special thanks to Sue this year. It's her last year, at least full time, in that role.

Sue really is one of the most amazing people. I'm lucky to know her personally, and she really is so much more am axing than most know. She's so busy during the convention, that very few get to see her during non-convention times. I've been lucky to be able to join her for a few excursions outside of SDCC. And she really is an amazing person with a heart of gold.

Nothing yet. Last year I got mine on Friday July 6th, less than 2 weeks from preview night. With the 4th being on a Thursday this year instead of Wednesday, I could see it getting pushed to the weekend or even sometime next week. In 2017 I didn't get my barcode until a week before preview night. However in 2013 (last time SDCC started on the same date, July 4th was on a Thursday, etc.) the volunteer registration email hit my inbox on July 3rd. So maybe expect it sometime between 7/3 and 7/9?
-
They closed the pre registration form already, but I don't have the specific date of when it closed. I was at work so I'm hoping my submission went through last week.

You will get an email with a barcode on it. It will have all the details.
Also, if you applied for a pre-con assignment, and you get one, you'll get an email with the details on that as well.
Everything will be explained to you.

My browser still reload it last night so I think it was still open then. But been able to submit the form does not garantee a pre-con shift will be assigned to you.
So how does this work? I'm a first timer so I'm not aware of a barcode you need to have to get passes.
CCI will send an e-mail with a volunteer badge barcode, the volunteer manual and the acceptance form. You will need to take the barcode and the sign form to the volunteer registration desk to receive your badge and schedule your first shift.
The location of the volunteer desk will be stated in the e-mail, in other years has been located in the MMM hotel.
-
question, If I already have a 4 day badge, do I receive another badge? I mean, like a freebie? or they dont hand out anything? or maybe I can put it to someone else name? this last one I know it probably is not possible but I have a friend with just 2 day badge and would be cool to surprise him

They will give you another bage, a volunteer badge for you to use during your shift and is for your use only. This badge will be active only the days you scheduled a volunteer shift.

My favorite pre-Con shift years back: PN volunteering, around 4-7. When shift was done, Volunteer Dept said I could stay. I wasn’t prepared and had no clue about what exclusives to get since I didn’t research them, but I did enjoy seeing some beloved comic creators (chatted Walt and Louise Simonson) without the crazy crowds.

Message received from volunteer department after asking about my double submission:
“Multiple responses result in multiple entries, but our first step is to consolidate or update time blocks. We much prefer a single response, but we thank you for updating your time blocks to reflect your actual availability.
And thank you for volunteering,
The Volunteer Dept”
Still waiting for my assignment though (if I got one)...

Got Wednesday at 11am. As far as selections go, this is pretty ideal for me.
Anyone know about how long the total time commitment is, including getting there beforehand, and whatever else needs to be done after the shift?

Signed up within a minute of receiving email but doesn't look like I got anything. I asked for the Wed 4-11pm slot which might be a popular time for volunteering and hard to get.

Letter requests people arrive 30 minutes before, so..
Travel time + parking to Convention Ctr + 30 minutes early + 3 hour shift + 15 minutes (wrapping up shift & getting out of Convention Ctr).
Sometimes, shifts end early or late, depending on what’s going on with the Volunteer Dept.
-
I don't think I'm getting an assignment. I was asleep when my email to sign up was sent out and didn't see it for 5 hours.

I got Wednesday at 6:30PM. What time does PN officially start again? I have a PN badge, so wondering if I can get any use out of it still...
-
Nothing for me. I haven't given up hope entirely. I did sign up hours late so hopefully they will get around to me. They are working in order of signup after all. If I don't get one, it would be my first time as a volunteer not to work a pre-con shift. Which is par for the course for me this year. I've already titled this year "The Lost Con" for me. If I get to do anything more than work one volunteer shift and leave, that will be gravy. Hopefully I will be able to at least do that.

Preview Night: 6:00PM - 9:00PM
oops...guess I don't need my PN badge. Anyone have thoughts on this situation? I will definitely volunteer, but I guess I wasn't thinking straight when I said "Any Time / Any Day". If it comes down to it, I will volunteer rather than attend PN. I never end up going for any exclusives or major stuff during PN anyways.
-
Letter requests people arrive 30 minutes before, so..
That's the same for any volunteer shift. Take it from someone who does show up 30 mins before my shifts, 90% of the people don't show up until about 5-10 minutes before.

If you want to attend PN you can always volunteer on one of the regular con days instead. Also, you could try contacting them to ask if you can change your pre-con shift to any time that isn't during PN. I'm not sure if they'll be able to change it, but it may be worth a try.

Looks like im in the same boat as you, I am hoping that the email has just got lost in the internet lol.

Got Tuesday @1 pm. I would have prefered Wednesday, but it's ok. Not too early.

I got Tuesday at 1pm and my wife got Tuesday at 12:30.. I just need to find where I can park

Ace still has $20 parking for CC and HBF for Tuesday. Also $15 at 6th and K and other lots. Not sure what fee is, though.

It's cheaper to park in the trolley and ride it to the convention center. It's $5 for the whole day.

Daughter got Wednesday @830am and I got Wednesday @9am. Glad that is all settled
I got Wednesday at 9 am as well. Maybe I'll get to say Hello! :)

If you see me please come say Hi 😊

I hope pre-con shifting is just taking the weekend off. I wasn't expecting it until Monday so it was a surprise that they started sending out assignments on Friday.
-
I'm pretty sure someone's asked this already, but I haven't found the answer. Will they have your actual assignment all set by the time you arrive, or will they go, "here's one or two available tasks, choose one?" And can you say you want to be indoors or outdoors?
-
My brother and I both got 4pm Wednesday, my friend got wednesday 1pm, but her hubby nothing.
For previous poster, from what I remember in the past, I didn't really have a choice. They just assigned me. I would think possible changes would be if you have a physical issue, such as not being able to stand for long periods, but you would have to tell them when you check in.
-

For PN, they have never asked me which shift I want — that said, if you have reasonable, general requests (I.e. having to be indoors or outdoors) then I’m pretty sure they can accommodate.
For non-PN volunteer shifts, thy have given me a few choices.
-
They are pretty accomodating on normal shifts. You can't ask to be in certain specific places but you can ask to be inside or for something that doesn't require standing up for example.
-

For pre-con shifts, it's set by the time you get assigned a shift.
For regular shifts, you have input. Generally, you get to pick the time or the job not both. So you either pick a specific time and then they give you a job that needs doing at that time or you tell them which job you want and then they find a time when that needs doing. It can get even more fine than that depending on the person handing out shifts. I've given them a time before and then some will give me a list of jobs that need doing then and let me choose one. I've had some people not say a word to me but just hand me the card with the assignment. So it really depends on who you get. It never hurts to ask.
-
so I got a pre-con shift for Wed. I think I will make Saturday my free day. So then what time would I show up on Thursday? Do I set that up when I finish volunteering on Wednesday?
-
You can claim your "free day" ON the day you want it. Sometimes they let you the day before but usually no.
-
I have been able to get my “free day” the evening before.
-
And any other day that is not ur free day, do you just show up early in the morning or do u set it up the day before as well?

You can set it up the day before. (Starting in the afternoon, I think around 1 PM.)

Thanks for all your help!!! Never done it before and it's all new

You can definitely claim your "free day" before that day. Why would anyone waste some of their "free day" going over to VHQ to claim it? I usually claim mine at least a day beforehand.

I've done this before as well, if I want Friday, I go there Thursday for example.

I have had times where they told me I needed to go back the morning of. I'm just saying from my past experience. Of course I would prefer to have it taken care of the day before. The less con time wasted the better. Not all the workers are the same. One was very mean to me one time, and even threatened to take away my volunteer privileges and insulted me by asking "do you understand English" and raising her voice when I inquired about changing a shift time because I got tickets for an autograph. My brother can tell you! Totally uncalled for!! All she had to do was tell me I was not able to. Instead she went full on attacking me when all I did was ask a simple question. I emailed Sue about it about was very apologetic. Sad she's leaving this year.

OMGS, I've never had anyone in that department be rude to me :( How awful, maybe it was a volunteer?
-
Hey, random question everyone, has anyone gotten their volunteer registration pages yet? I recall I had mine by this time last year.
-
No. Only the pre con time
-
Interesting as it's next week

mine does too LOL

Technically we did register on 2018 haha

Just got my barcode email, but I didn't see a link to the pages we need to print and bring with us. Did I miss it? I searched my inbox and couldn't find anything for this year.

They sent us an email with the subject Welcome to the Comic-Con 2019 Volunteer Program once we registered. My email is dated November 1,2018. That email has the volunteer package attached with the forms you need to sign and bring in.
-
Got mine at 6:30AM. So to get a jump start to Con, can we drop by the Marriott on Wednesday night to get our first assignment and then get our Thursday badge?
-
First time volunteer...
- Where is the volunteer orientation document? They mentioned bringing some signed pages, but I have no idea where that is located. Was it supposed to be in email?
- I have a badge already, and am not super picky about the time slot I would get, though I would have a morning/afternoon preference depending on the day. What would be the best time to go to minimize time waiting in line for an assignment??
- Kind of related to above, in general are morning shifts more popular vs afternoon shifts?
-

I got mine as well. Does that mean then we have no hope now of getting a pre-con shift?
-
The pages you need are in that one email you get after signing up. Not the barcode email.
But don’t panic if you can’t find the pages, each page will be available onsite. As for a pre-con shift email, no email by now = you weren’t picked.

I wouldn't say no hope. A couple of years back, a second round of pre-con assignments came out about a week after the first. I would say low hope. About on the order of getting Conan tickets. ;)

Let me help with these by adding to @DianaOfThemyscira's reply:
1. The volunteer badge bar code email is not the same as your volunteer registration email. Your bar code email is for the purposes of getting your badge on-site at the Volunteers Department HQ area. Your volunteer registration email is the one you received way back in November, the one that says you are confirmed to be a volunteer for Comic-Con 2019. A quick search in your email inbox should help you locate it as well as the attachment for the pages you need to print out and bring to the Volunteers Department HQ.
Much like what @Mario Wario said, it is also true that the HQ will have some copies of the forms you need printed out for you, in case you lose yours or end up not finding it.
2. In the past, I've noticed that there are much less people in line in the late afternoon/early evening through closing time or so. If you're not too particular about when your shift time slot is, I would recommend going later to select your next shift for the following day (or, alternatively, you could get there before they open up for the day and be the first to select your shift when they do open up, as that would probably have less people in line than the prime hours of late morning through afternoon).
3. Morning shifts and late morning shifts are more popular, due to the fact that people like being able to go to panels or events later on in the day without having to worry about their volunteer schedule.
Hope this helps! ^__^/
-
Found the original Volunteer Program email. Mine was dated October 18th, so I hadn't gone back far enough...Thanks all!

I always sign up for the next day's shift right before VHQ closes. There's never a line. I've never not gotten a shift for the time slot I wanted.

Indeed! This is very true. There was a time or two when I couldn't make it to HQ that early, so I had to go around closing time and it was super empty. XD

I always get my volunteer badge on Wednesday. Why waste con time? So yes, you can and get an assignment for Thursday. For pre-con shifters, Wednesday is also the first day you can pick up your badge. Before that you'll be badgeless.
-
I completed a pre-con assignment and gave them my assignment ticket. I didn’t get any info on getting a volunteer t-shirt, did anyone else? The guy took both parts of my assignment ticket.

I think you have to complete a normal shift in order to redeem the T-shirt.

At the Volunteer check-in, go back today and get your t-shirt part of your badge validated. Then you take stub part to the Hyatt to get your shirt.

Does the volunteer tshirt have the 50th anniversary on it?
In addition, if you have preview night and 4 day passes and you choose to volunteer, make sure they don't void out the rest of your days. I went yesterday to get an assignment for today, when I went to scan in for preview night it failed. Had to go to rfid help, to learn they voided out the rest of my days and activated only Thursday.

Don't you have two badge holders? One for your normal badge and one for the volunteer one? Did the normal one malfunction?

I did get 2 badges, one for volunteer and one for attendee. However, my attendee badge told me when they scanned it, only it had Thursday access at rfid help desk. I had to confirm some information and then they reinstated all of my days that I had. I'm probably not the first person this is going to occur, but I wanted to warn others. This was my first time volunteering and I didn't know that they can avoid out the rest of my days by signing up for a shift. I'm not sure if this was user error to whoever checked me in to get an assignment shift. I did email volunteer to inform them, but I don't think their gonna respond.

I heard that the pre-con shifts won't be loaded into the system until after 1:30 pm today so they won't validate the t-shirt pick-up until then.
-
Disappointed that volunteer bag pickup is in sails now. It defeats Weds badge pickup to save time and con cargo load on busy days since pickup is only on days you work. No more pre-con pickup.
-
Does the volunteer tshirt have the 50th anniversary on it?
Yes, it’s a dark gray shirt and has the modern eye logo with a 50 next to it.

Great!!!
I had a pre-con shift. Wednesday at 9:00 am. We were led into the area where we were supposed to help with the program premiums. When we got there, the supervisor told us the previous days shift had done all the work, so we just had to hang out for a couple of hours. She told us to leave at 11:30, and stamped our cards. That was the easiest shift I ever did.

Actually, no. What was there was all boxed up, and I think a lot was moved out. Funny, I wasn't even thinking about that. We were given program guides/quick guides. I was happy I didn't have to wait until going thru the bag line. Once they did that, I was focused on putting my schedule together. I know we have all the information ahead of time, but the guide helps me solidify my schedule.
Plus I got to talk to the other members of my shift. There were 4 of them. I was the only one who had paid for my ticket. The rest used volunteering to be able to go to the con since they did not sicore badges during open reg. They were all very nice.

How was everyone's experience volunteering this year?
I had a pre-con shift on Wednesday starting at 3:30. I was assigned to the Freebie Table, so I stood there and straightened out the piles of cards that were on the table, placed new ones on there once they were approved by the supervisor and explained to people what the freebie table was and that they were welcome to take anything on there. I also put aside all the quick guides, schedule books and souvenir books that people dumped on the table because it was the first area that came after people left the badge, bags and lanyard area. I also was kind of an informal information contact because people would come by asking me questions (like where MGH was - there were a lot of first timers who stopped by).
I enjoyed it and had a good time, and I was glad to give something back to the con. I would definitely attempt to volunteer again next year.

How was everyone's experience volunteering this year?
Pleasant pre-Con shift Tuesday morning stuffing bags under the sails. Geeky conversations with my table buddies (learning what geeky things they’re into, critiquing the last season of GOT, etc).
Since the computers weren’t set up to distribute Volunteer shirt cards, I didn’t get one that day. When I went to Volunteer check in get my shirt card on Sunday, I was kinda yelled at for not having a Volunteer badge (as I never had one.. didn’t need it as a Pro. Yes, I’m a Pro and I continue to volunteer). The Volunteer supe was talking to me like I did something wrong. It was weird.
All my other interactions with the Volunteer Dept have been great.
-
I worked BBL handouts. We had a "competition" who could hand out the most bags. So we started waving our bags and trying to entice attendees to come to us.
All the bags around me were either Team Coco and Doom Patrol and Steven Universe, with very little else. When someone asked if I had something else, I didn't outright say no, but I just said, "Well, there's a huge line of us. Maybe you'll find what you want at the end."
I actually worked only about 2 hours, as they were slow in getting us to Sails, and they let us out a half hour early because a new shift had come. Overall, easy peasy, well worth the free t-shirt and the priority volunteer for next year.
-
I only worked Friday night since I won badges through the auction, and I got line management. I had heard this is the easiest/the most boring shift you can get, but I happened to get line management for the World Premiere of Batman: Hush, and I got placed inside Ballroom 20 so I actually got to watch the world premiere and just handed out bathroom passes for two hours. All in all a very easy gig. Just wish I hadn't been working for the entire day before having to stand another 3 hours straight.
-
I had a great time with my two days of volunteering in which I was wearing a orange vest and taking volunteers to their assignments. The three hours went by fast and I got to meet some wonderful people. This was my first time volunteering and I will definitely do it again.

I think the thing is that the the t-shirt coupon comes with the volunteer badge. It's all printed out together. So that's why it's a good idea to get checked in as a volunteer and get your volunteer badge. The other benefit is that you can go get another bag. ;)
Was it a "real" supe or a newly minted departmental volunteer? Just because they are wearing a green shirt doesn't mean they know what they are doing. The self reflective ones will tell you that. That departmental or daily, we are all just volunteers and may not know what's going on. I've known dailies that knew more about how a department runs than their team lead. I've run into newly minted departmental volunteers where that con they were working was the first comic-con they've ever been to.
Many times, the staff with the most experience don't even wear a green shirt. This year where I was working, there was a situation. I asked 3 different green shirts what we should do. I got various forms of "I don't know." With 15 people staring at me with a WTH is going on look on their faces, it was left to me to make the call. I did. Later I found a non green shirted staff and told them what happened and how I solved it. I got a "Sounds good."

It really depends on the person coordinating the area. Some will keep people there all 3 hours. I've done a shift where my sole activity was siting on the concrete floor up in sails for 3 hours. Others will release them early if there's nothing to do. I've cut people loose 20 minutes into a shift because there was simply no job for them. On the other hand, I've done a 4 hour shift because no one showed up to replace me. I won't walk away from a post until someone shows up to take over.
-
Just curious, were the blinky blinks volunteer, or were they SDCC staff?
I don't recall, but there seemed to be a lot more of them this year than past years, sprinkled all along the pier, guiding people to where the actual wristbands were.
-
I had a pre-con shift on Wednesday morning in the MMM volunteer check-in area. We were taking the paperwork and sorting them into piles doing some filing. It was fun because we were behind the desks and the folk I worked with were nice to chat with and we had a good time. Worked the full 3 hours, and a couple of days later, I got my t shirt.

How was everyone's experience volunteering this year?
It was great! I only did Saturday 9:30am for the program premium room at the Hyatt. When I checked in I requested to be there, I love working there going on 4 years straight now.
I was opening the boxes for the GOT swag and refill the tables. Also, we had a competition on which side gave out more GOT bags, so I was yelling "Game of thrones over here this side!!"
So time went by fast and kept busy, Fun times :D

That sounds like a lot of fun. I have to do a volunteer shift at least once.

There is something about volunteering that makes me feel more whole at SDCC. Do I like getting the free exclusive shirt? Sure. Yet being part of the show means much more to me. This year I didn't need the free day, and surely was glad about that, but who knows about next year? SDCC is my primary vacation time!
-
I did a pre-con shift where I sat in a chair in the volunteer department and let other volunteers knows were to go.
And I did a Friday shift with my mom for the first time where, suprise suprise, we just sat outside ballroom 20 and waitied for about 30 minutes after waiting 30 minutes in the volunteer department and they let use go. For some reason this has happened to my volunteer shift for the last 4 years.
Kind of a boring year, I really like when I get to give the bags or prep them.

Not sure if true, but seems u able do same job ea day if by chance fill in space where it needed if early or later. use to try do mid day but things have changed and so did some later and some early so have rest day free
