This year, Mattel is showing off a great selection of various Masters of the Universe lines, including the 12″ Jumbo Style figures, 5″ Retro Style Figures, Mega Bloks Construction Sets, and the She-Ra 11″ Figures.

The big news this year, is that Mattel is bringing back ThunderCats Classics, and are showing both Jaga and Grune, two figures originally cancelled from the 2016 line-up (these are not on display just yet). Mattel is looking to offer the ThunderCats line through  something that’s in the works, which could be something like Mattycollector once was, but it’s not clear just yet on what exactly their plans are. Previously, Mattel offered Lion-O, Mumm-Ra (Third-Earth Subscriber Exclusive), Wiley Kit, Wiley Kat,  Jackalman, and Pumyra, and now Grune and Jaga will get their turn likely in 2019. We’ve been told that since Funko has a Thundercats line, this helped Mattel to bring back these figures on their end, which details on that are still sketchy how exactly this came about.

In 2016, Mattel abruptly cancelled Mattycollector and with it, all plans such as the ThunderCats were put on hold for the foreseeable future, and at the time it sounded like this would never return. At the time and leading up to today, it was reported that Super 7 had been attempting to secure the ThunderCats Classics line and license to pursue making figures on behalf of Mattel, which unfortunately did not happen.

This weekend, we are hoping to have some news to shed on this developing story, but we’ve been told that Mattel isn’t giving much information away. We will be talking to them ourselves at some point in hopes to get some clarification.

At their booth, they have Jumbo and Retro figures of Faker, Slimed He-Man and Anti-He-Man. She-Ra 11″ figures has Catra and  Netossa (back on display for the first time since San Diego Comic-Con 2016), She-Ra herself, and Entrapta. He-Man also gets 11″ figures of Teela, Evil-Lyn, He-Man himself and the Sorceress. There are also new Masters of the Universe Mega Construx sets on display.

Pre-Orders of the Mega Construx Sets are available on Entertainment Earth and BigBadToyStore. Everything else shown is not yet available.

EL SEGUNDO, Calif., Sept. 13, 2018 -- Mattel, Inc. (NASDAQ: MAT) announced today that Dr. Judy Olian, the ninth President of Quinnipiac University and former Dean of the UCLA Anderson School of Management, has been elected to the Company's Board of Directors, effective today.

"Judy Olian is one of the most respected leaders in higher education in the U.S. She is a strategic thinker and an expert in transformation processes and managing complex people-driven organizations," said Ynon Kreiz, Chairman and CEO of Mattel. "Mattel and its Board will benefit immensely from Judy's valuable experience in human resource strategies and organization design as we take transformative steps to evolve our organization and build new capabilities for the future."

Dr. Olian served as Dean of the UCLA Anderson School of Management for more than twelve years, simultaneously holding the John E. Anderson Chair in Management, before being named the ninth President of Quinnipiac University in 2018. During her time at UCLA, more than half of Anderson's current faculty were hired and she expanded the school's Board of Advisors, attracting many prominent business leaders who represent diverse functional and global perspectives. She oversaw the launch of four new research centers and the social impact initiative, global partnerships, and fundraising of more than $450 million in philanthropic support for the school. Under her leadership, gender diversity among faculty and students increased significantly.

Dr. Olian serves as a director of Ares Management LLC, a global alternative asset manager, and a director of United Therapeutics Corp., a biotechnology company addressing the needs of patients with chronic and life-threatening conditions. In addition, she is a member of the advisory board of Catalyst Inc., a global nonprofit organization that engages in research and advocacy to accelerate the progress of women in the workplace.

Olian holds a BA in psychology from The Hebrew University, Jerusalem, and MSc and PhD degrees in industrial relations from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Over the course of her academic career, Olian has been widely published in journals on human resource management, top management team composition and the business alignment of management systems.

With the addition of Dr. Olian, Mattel's Board of Directors now includes 10 directors, five of whom have joined within the last five months, further strengthening its expertise, diversity and capabilities for the future.

Ynon, who in April became the company’s fourth CEO in four years, increased the size of the company’s board from seven to ten, adding Roger Lynch, CEO of Pandora Media, and Adriana Cisneros, a media executive who heads up her own firm Cisneros Group.

Last week, Kreiz launched a film division, hiring veteran Robbie Brenner — a producer of the Academy Award-nominated movie Dallas Buyers Club and former president of production at Relativity Media — to head up the venture.

“Ynon is pursuing a very different course from his predecessor, Margo Georgiadis,” toy consultant Richard Gottlieb said of the former Mattel CEO, who stepped down after a year in the job. “She wanted to put Mattel in the digital business and he wants to be in the media and film business,” Gottlieb said. “Hasbro has demonstrated the value this approach brings.”

No significant impact for SDCC 2019 as Mattel won’t lose the rights until Spring 2020. By then the company may have acquired other rights to make other toys.  It really depends on the strategic vision of the company.
