I too enjoyed it.  Got to go to the event they did at SXSW last year and that was a nice prep for the movie.

I wished I could have gone to their event up in LA.

If anyone is planning to see Alita, there's $8 in moviecash for it if you buy specific blu-rays. I bought a blu-ray for $8 so I think of it as a free blu-ray.

Saw this tonight. Way better than it has any right to be. Plenty of fun and reminded me of those 90s Sci-fi movies I loved growing up.

This deserves to be seen on the big screen.

I agree with your review. The battle scenes were great, but the romance felt rushed and forced. He just seemed like a distraction to me.

agreed, the romance was a distraction since it was so very formula... absolutely nothing new & therefor *extremely boring*
like the producers said, ok so we have a main character who's a young girl therefore we have to have a young boy to be her love interest because a girl has to have a boy around even if he's a f*^ up.

Saw it last night. It was fairly average. Nothing spectacular, yet nothing glaringly terrible. The action scenes were well done. Very clean and easy to follow. The CG was fairly par for today (if this had been released, say, maybe 5 years ago, it would’ve been an easy Oscar VFX contender). Some things felt forced and rushed, like her speech at the bar (I was thinking, wait, how did we already get to this point where she felt compelled to give that speech?). And despite things feeling rushed, the ending left a lot to be desired. It was most definitely a “That’s it? That’s all we get?”

I think if this movie does well enough to get sequels, I may reevaluate how this movie stands.

That's pretty much how I felt at the end. The movie just kind of stopped. I realize that this was basically the pilot for a franchise but I hate it when they do that. Even in a franchise, each movie should be a complete and intact story. I felt shortchanged.

I'm not sure it's going to do well enough for a sequel. Reviews are not good. Some reviews are saying it was too much material and yet not enough. They tried to jam in too much source material in this one movie so it was too much and too superficial.

I will be seeing it again. I have to. I completely forgot I had the $8 in moviecash for it until the movie was over. So I have to spend that on another showing. Maybe 3D this time. Supposedly they did a great job with that. Which can be said for the entire movie. It looked great. It had great execution. I just wished the story matched that execution.

Yup. If you’re going to have a series of movies that are basically one story, each movie still needs to stand on its own. Every Harry Potter movie was a good movie on its own, even though it was one sprawling story. Same with Lord of the Rings. However, Alita and Fantastic Beasts 2 both suffer from “just when it seems we’re getting to the good part, it ends.” There are ways to end on a cliffhanger without making the audience feel shortchanged. See: Infinity War & Empire Strikes Back. They both had an epic final act, something Alita didn’t really have.

Alita felt like it would’ve been better as an HBO or Netflix series.

Hey, like several others here, I pretty much agreed with your review.  Also like you, I didn't read the manga and went in with a fresh view of the story.  Yes, a little bit too much romance for me as well.  The teenage body part didn't bother me, as myself being Asian, many of us Asians tend to be used to this look.  I did opt to see the Real 3D version of the film.  It looked good to me.  The plot wasn't earth shaking, but then again being based on a Manga, it worked for me.  I see that the worldwide total box office take was close to $37M with a budget of $170M.  Better than predicted, but not earthshaking either.

Seems like I agree with everyone else. Loved the action and cinematography. They could have removed the entire love story aspect. Also went to the iron city alita experience in Austin morning after seeing movie and it was amazing. So much fun and super immersive.

How are the big CGI eyes?  They're pretty distracting from the stills.

Same question/concern I had!  Good to hear it's not too distracting.

I wouldn't say it's distracting, but it _is_ noticeable. But she's not human, so I accepted it, just like you accept random nose ridges on Star Trek aliens.

Ignoring the design, the eyes were quite well-done in a technical sense.
