Since I only have Thursday and Sunday badges, I'm thinking of forgoing the hotel and just making day trips to San Diego on the days I have badges.  I may try to book parking instead.  It's just as well, I'm still paying off my credit card for last year's hotel stay.  I expect to get it paid off by the end of May.  I would rather not be making payments to my credit card into next year.  It just means I have to get up super early on the days I have badges.  At least I can pick up my Thursday badge the day before.

get a cheap hotel a ways away from SD plus sdcc parking.  at least for the night before the days in which you have passes.
that way you'll be able to get there early for the day.  getting there early is key with parking

I E-mailed Ace and asked them if they could put me on an E-mailing list to remind us when we can put in orders for parking and this the response I got:

Date: March 11, 2013 4:54:10 PM PDT

Subject: Re: Parking for San Diego Comic-Con.

Good afternoon.
I'm sorry but we do not have such a list.  We have not yet been contacted by ComicCon;  please continue to refer to their website.
Thank you.

Guess I'll just monitor the Facebook page for updates.

Parking is the only thing I'm confident about every year when it comes to SDCC. Haven't really had problems with it. The only thing to happen was one morning, our first year at the con, our lot was full by the time we got there even though we pre paid. They just put us in the next lot down though so it really wasn't a problem.

Nope though some folks have said Hilton is as long as you have the correct pass displayed. Will have to wait til CCI posts more info to confirm but generally speaking, it's around 5am to late at night (midnight-ish?).

The Hilton charges its guests more for 24 hour self-parking than they charge for the CCI parking. If the CCI parking were 24 hours, Hilton guests would be using it. ;)

Yes but others have mentioned before that they switch the tags/paper after midnight or whatever time and have not had any issues. Not that I recommend it but it's just something that has been shared multiple times.

I'm wondering,
I'm staying at the OMNI for SDCC (Wednesday - Sunday), they charge $38dlls for valet parking.

Could it be possible to self-park in the Hilton Bayfront garage (24hrs) for the $27dlls they charge per day? it's alot cheaper than the OMNI that only offers valet... what are my other options?

Some hotels will close off their lots and restrict to guests only (or pre-paid parking).

We're coming from Tijuana... (It's the first time we're staying at a Hotel for the 5 days, we want the whole experience XD) usually we get up early and cross the border everyday. But now we want to use that time for lining up for HALL H lol!
I'm starting to consider convincing my parents to give us a ride on Wednesday and pick us up on Sunday up when the con is over lol...

"You can arrive and park on Wednesday."

I've heard really good things about the amtrak from LA/OC to SD too. Trains take longer but with the traffic on the 5 the way that it is it probably evens out to be the same amount of time lol. I'm a weirdo though, I like having my car with me even if it's inconvenient... I just like having the security of knowing it's there in case I need it.

I contacted ACE Parking via email to ask what time the parking lots will be open each morning during comic-con and was told that the hours are 6am to 2am - this is a bummer because in order to get into those Hall H lines (especially Saturday) - you need to be able to parked and in line before 6am - at least if last year was any indication - I there at 6:30am and wasn't able to get into Hall H until the afternoon. Does anyone have any additional info on this?

I am specifically interested in the parking structure that is next to the Bayfront Hilton - the one that has bridge across Harbor Drive attached to it.

Last year folks were being let into the lot around 5am. Probably won't know until CCI makes a specific comment about pre-paid parking.

Friday of last year, I got in line for Hall H just before 9am and missed four panels ("Paranorman", "The Big Bang Theory", "The Walking Dead", "Games of Throes", etc.), but I did get in by mid afternoon to see the panels for "Resident Evil: Retribution" and the "Total Recall" remake.  There was a third big screen panel that followed for "Elysium" (scheduled to open August 9) that featured Matt Damon and Jodie Foster but I didn't stay for that.

Thursday of last year, I got in line just before 8am and was able to see the panel for "Twilight".

Vendor parking pre-sale is to be limited to the convention center since it's needed for loading and unloading, etc. So everything else will be available during the general sale with no spaces pre-sold. Vendors are limited to one set of passes for one car, 2 if they submitted a request to register a second email address by a certain date. In my humble opinion there should be some convention center parking still available when parking opens to the public except maybe for Wednesday (because of load in.)
Title: Re: 2013 Parking Pass Thread --Any & All Info goes here---

There usually is underground parking available. So in other words if the demand from the vendors is the same then what you say makes sense.

Under the convention center is A pretty big lot. I've parked under there the past couple years. It can be a pain  in the morning, because the main entrance is right there where everyone enters the con. When you leave at the end of the day and exit thru the front it too can be a pain. Best bet is to exit thru the rear by the water.

Does anyone know if the parking garage next to the Hilton Bayfront will be available parking sale for Comic-con - so far, it is not designated on the map as in previous years - I posted this question also on ACE's facebook page - but wanted to know if anyone on this forum has any inside info.

If the parking lot next to the Hilton Bayfront is not open for comic-con - that means a huge increase in parking costs - and more inconvenience.

Yes - That is the one - the parking garage between the Hilton Bayfront and the bridge that crosses Harbor Drive.

According my info the address is 801 Harbor Drive, San Diego CA 92101. So far, on the maps I have seen it isn't designated for comic-con with a green marker like the convention center and all the other lots.

Here is an article that also mentions that the lot in question may not be on the list: http://sdccblog.com/2013/04/a-guide-to-parking-at-san-diego-comic-con/

I thought it was one of the cities parking structure. I believe it said something about city transportation center on it. I might be wrong, but I don't think it operated by ace. It was maybe 3 or so years since I last saw it last. I could totally be wrong.
Title: Re: 2013 Parking Pass Thread --Any & All Info goes here---

That is a good question - I am not sure if it run by ACE or the City - However, the question is - will it show up as an available lot on Friday Morning, April 19th at 9am at the Permit Store along with all of the ACE lots?

Also, why would parking lot under the convention center an ACE lot (the convention center is owned by the city, I think) and not the one next to Hilton Bay front?
Title: 2013 Parking Pass Thread --Any & All Info goes here---

I believe Ace manages the lots that the city owns. I think the in question lot is also a transportation hub for the down town area.

That would be really odd if it was not available this year as parking there for comic-con has been available for the past few years since it has been built - and they participated in the presale through the permit store the past couple of years. It would be great if had some sort of official word on it.

Was able to purchase my exhibitor parking this morning after the exhibitor link opened, (after a bit of a problem involving my email address not being pre-approved even though I'm an exhibitor, but did manage to check out and complete the purchase after a couple of emails.) Just a bit of info, I don't remember what the online "convenience fee" was last year but it was $5.95 per day on top of the parking space charges for the convention center when I checked out, even though it was one transaction.

Getting into that link is just as hopeless.

But it takes you directly to the convention center sales page. 2 fewer pages to go through.

It's worth having that in a window and keep trying. I was able to get in there on 3 different windows.

Agree, if you're looking to park at the Convention Center, use the direct link to it:

https://www.thepermitstore.com/cc/open-sales/event_info.php?location_ID=352

I couldn't get the main map page to even load anymore and when it did the pop-ups for the different locations were slow to load or timed out.

Took me 30 mins to finally get it. Originally got in around 9:10 a.m. but then when I inputted CC info, timed out and when I got it to load again all my inputted payment and vehicle info were wiped out and had to keep reloading all over again.

Good luck

Hi all! I bought parking permits for Thu, Fri, Sat and Sun at the convention center but I messed up on the license plate. I unfortunately forgot an asterisk (not number or letter) at the end of the plate, but everything else is correct. From past experience, would you guys know if this is an issue or should I contact them about this problem?

If we have a hotel downtown (Marriott Gaslamp Quarter) and we just want to park Wed night through Sunday and not move our car, what's the best option? It looks like the hotel parking is $36 a day, which seems like a lot for just storing your car for several days. But the Ace parking options don't include overnight parking, so what's left?

I printed each of the permits between trying to get through (and frequent site crashings) via the links posted. Snagging Comic Con parking will always be a bit bumpy.  By "a bit," I mean a lot. ^-^

See, it wasn't always bumpy. Until this year, it was always smooth. But this year Ace made the same mistake SDCC made for 2010 badge sales: they announced the date and time the passes would be going on sale far in advance. Then they weren't ready for the deluge that flooded their site. Sheesh, some people never learn. Just quietly turn on the parking pass sales and let people trickle in, then officially 'announce' it 24 hours later. At least that way the site wouldn't crash, and those who are vigilant would be rewarded.

I think CCI, hotels, and parking should not give anymore notice about sales. Do  it as a twitter announcement or something. That would save the servers and prevent them from crashing because of the million hits at once.

The problem is, once you move to the route of announcing in advance, it's hard to go back.

But yes, I agree. The best way to ease server load and prevent crashes is not to have everyone trying all at once. ANything that slows down the access (including letting the info trickle out) helps.

I agree with this 100%, and I think CCI should do the same thing for general badge sales (the way it used to be).  There are too many people wanting to buy than the servers can handle at one time (especially in this day and age of "I was trying to get through with my laptop, desktop, iPhone & 2 iPads"), and this idea (i.e. what Ace had done the previous few years for the most part) seems to be more prudent.

Damn that was absolutely nutty this morning!  In the last couple of years of Ace/CCI selling prepaid parking it was NEVER as crazy as it was this morning.  I was able to persevere and after an hour and fifteen minutes I was able to get Convention Center parking for the entire week.  It was cool to see so many folks helping out, posting direct links, etc.

Now I have everything I need & all I have to do is wait for mid-July!  Here's hoping everyone else is all set, or at least gets what they need when parking sales reopen.  Most of the lots with prepaid are super close to shuttle stops, so if you have to drive in every morning, any parking spot you can get is better than stressing it the morning of, trying to find a spot.

Also, charging through the nose for things like parking and wifi is one way they make up for the 'reduced' rates being charged for people who book through TP.

The Convention and Hilton parking have always been $10 and the rest of the lots were $20-$25. I believe the difference in price has something to do with the Hilton/Convention lots being in Port Authority area.

Yeah, I was thinking the Hilton garage was a little bit more expensive than previous years (I thought it was $10 previously, and went up to $12 this year).  I also think the "convenience fee" was a few dollars more this year, but I could be wrong about that.

Either way, I'm always amused that it's cheapest to park under the Convention Center, and more than double to park many blocks away at Petco Park lots/garages

It's not the general anouncement (time, date, site) of the sale, it's the use of media sites like Twitter and Facebook which have caused the deluge of on-site problems. How many times have you read a post on facebook of some newbie asking a question about when where and how? Same goes for Twitter. It's like these people have no idea even how to go directly to the CCI web page or do a google search, but they know how to ask a (less then smart) question on the facebook page. It cracks me up that there are still people asking how to get "tickets" to comic con or why can I not just buy them at the door. With very little due diligence and a little light reading, they would find the answer.

That's my take on it...

That's no 'explanation' at all.

First of all, it was *not* a courtesy. It was a mess. Posting the time and date in advance only caused more problems.

Secondly, if they knew the risk, then why did the site bog down? Clearly they weren't prepared. That says to me that they didn't truly understand the risk.

To be fair, it's never been this crazy before.  Last year Convention Center parking sold out quick, but there was no constant site crashing like today, and parking for other lots was available for quite awhile (several weeks, maybe even several months).  I had a bad feeling things would explode today, but since this hadn't ever happened before I don't really blame Ace for it: they seemed to have been caught with their pants down this morning

Glad I was able to help!
Unfortunitually I had to get into my car and finish my drive to boston otherwise I would have hung out more

It wasn't this crazy last year, because they didn't have everyone trying to flood the site all at one moment. Some people 'found' the link early and bought, then passed that around, then Ace opened up the link to the public and announced it without any warning. People went and bought parking passes as they found out about it.

Announcing when they were going to post the link in advance (more than a week in advance) simply ensured that everyone interested would flood the page all at the same second. *That's* what was new for this year.

You're arguing semantics. It IS an explanation. They had too many people attempting to access the site and it got bogged down. That's an explanation.

It IS a courtesy to share the info w/ CCI.  Last year they had a soft open and while there were no crashes, only a small amount of people knew about the link (yes the forum knew about it in advance and quietly reached out to those who expressed interest in parking so as to not create a rush on the site).

You can acknowledge that you are aware of the risks AND still be unprepared for it. Unexpected crap happens.

Unexpected crap happens.

But that's the whole point. It *wasn't* unexpected. Anyone could have predicted that this would happen. To know that this could happen (i.e. understanding the risks) and not adequately prepare for it... well, I could come up with a few adjectives.

But as Alyssa said, it will be interesting to see what's left when the link goes back up. it seems as if they're not going to 'announce' the link going back up (Learned their lesson, perhaps?) so we'll just have to keep checking it.

Another Facebook post from Ace Parking.

(https://www.friendsofcc.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi72.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi169%2FAndrewInPhoenix%2FAce_Parking2_zps38a7a6f1.jpg&hash=5f6380a6b6b796d312ab68c8a68ac92e72b28652)

I'm stating to think both SDCCI and Ace Parking should go back to the old way of selling badges and parking passes by not announcing in advance the date and time of sales, just put the link on the Facebook pages and let people trickle in instead of having a situation where thousands of people try to get into the same link at the same time, causing the website to crash.

Last year was much easier, because they didn't have a million people flood there server at 0900. Last year they just announced "hey you can get passed now." In and out very easy and painless. If CCI and Ace didn't announce anything until the moment things would go on sale, then it would go smooth. Everyone would be happy. Puppy dogs and kittens would be playing,Star Wars and Star Trek fans would hold hands, twilight would be accepted as a real movie, and no servers would crash.

ROFL!!!!!!

Yzrfan, I'll hold your hand (as a Star Trek fan) if it makes the whole world a little brighter. Don't tell my husband, though. ;)

Seriously though, I completely agree with what you said. Many of the server-crashing messes that have occurred with the CCI badge sales (and the parking sale today) have occurred because of too much advance warning. I'd rather have the 'trickle down' information going on.

How many vendors could adequately prepare for something like that regardless of what was predicted? No company is going to re-scale their system to basically handle a couple hours of traffic. Besides, what is considered adequate preparation? Will we be happier when parking prices double next year to pay for a new system that might better accomodate the user? Or when prices triple to get more in line with the rest of downtown parking?

The alternative could be NOT to offer pre-sale parking and tell everyone to show up day of and good luck getting a spot. Then there wouldn't be any websites crashing - just cars crashing.

I don't know how many vendors could prepare. I don't have that kind of technical knowledge. But if they can't handle it, then CCI needs to work with another vendor.

Again, I'm not a technical person, but IIRC, it's possible to hire the services of a server company to handle increased traffic for a few days. They could also hire someone to set up a waiting room, like Epic does when badges are sold.

I wouldn't mind if they increased prices if it made it easier to get in and buy the passes. They could double the service fee to $12 per day.

They certainly could take away the prepaid parking option. That would cost too, in the form of traffic cops, electronic signs, etc.

But Ace runs the parking. Not an option to just find someone else.

Yeah, I think it's promising.  I emailed them asking for confirmation of the permits already sold.  There was one year (either last year or the year before) where the page accidentally went live a few days early, people bought parking permits, Ace realized the problem, and I think they invalidated the sales (they might not have though, I don't recall since I didn't affect me at that time).  I'm hoping that they will honor permits already sold: it would be ironic (and incredibly frustrating) if they invalidated the sales when their policy is clearly "all sales final - no refunds" for the consumer's end.  I'm likely (hopefully) over thinking, but I'll let you know what I hear from Ace.  I'm a little nervous is 1) the confirmation email I got with the link to reprint my permits received the same "Comic-Con Sales Temporarily Disabled.  We apologize for the inconvenience." error message as those trying to go to the permit selling page.  I got the same error message when I tried to submit my email to have Ace email me replacement badges as well.
I'm probably over thinking/paranoid (at least, I'm hoping)...

I can't see why they would invalidate sales that went through and got bar codes and confirmation emails. The people who got through did so at the time Ace told them to do this, and moved through Ace's system (not some 'back door'). There's nothing 'inappropriate' about these sales. No reason to cancel them.

Besides, if they don't cancel them, then that's fewer people crashing the system when it goes up next week.

That's good. If they're saying the convention center is sold out, then it's pretty much confirming that the people who were able to buy today will have their passes honored.

Ace just posted this on facebook...

"We apologize that service issues arose today in our attempt to open parking sales to the public. We publicly released the date and time of the sale ahead of time to meet the request of many of you, knowing the risk that the server may crash. Unfortunately today, the server crashed.

At this point, it looks like the site won't be back up until early next week. While we tried to satisfy your requests for pre-releasing the information on the date and time of the sale, we may not be able to do this in the future in order to avoid service failures. We have tried and will continue to be transparent with you throughout this process. We will take this year's experience and all of your commentary and utilize it to make this process better, that is our job. Please be patient with us and know we are working around the clock to fix this issue. Thank you."

That's good: that seems pretty clear that everything sold today was finalized (I can probably stop being paranoid)  :P
Also, FWIW, the Convention Center garage is pretty small, so no shock it sold out already.  The Hyatt is a great local (though I love being able to pop into the Convention Center garage to drop off swag & merch, store food & soda, etc).

+1 Transmute!! Once again much love and appreciation for you. Your post was the one that led directly to me getting my parking passes. Thanks to you I was able to get Thursday to Sunday at the Convention Center. I must have just missed ... minutes/seconds ... from getting Wednesday too ... was at work so had to step away from the computer for a bit ... darn it! However, was able to make it in a little later, directly from the "normal" link to get Wednesday at the Hilton. Not bad. I'll take it. I guess I'll be strategic and get the bigger items on Thursday and beyond.

BTW ... got the comics. Thanks!

I agree. Last 2 years had no problem with the site. Smooth, in and out. In fact, I remember checking hours later and still everything was available. The ISSUE really is everyone hitting the site at ONE time.

I also remember 3 years ago there were a lot more pre-paid parking options. I can not figure out why it's only down to about what 5 or so lots. That's certainly a contributor to this. I remember many more options, all be it a little further out. I bought pre-paid parking at a lot way down on 5th by maybe A or Ash. It was only $5! It was a nice little walk but it was right across the street from a couple of hotels that had a shuttle stop so you could just jump on it there. What happened to these?

Anyways, I'm set and fine for this year but it just really scares me about the future. The badges were so hard, I heard the hotels were challenging and now parking! They got to do something or it literally is going to be like winning the lottery.

I'm glad it helped you out, Karatekid! Preview Night at the Hilton isn't that big a deal, so you should be okay. I remember one year they didn't offer PN parking at the convention center to anyone except vendors. Everyone went to the Hilton and it worked out fine.

I think PN has less capacity at the convention center garage, because they give priority to vendors setting up on the exhibit floor.

And you got the comics, great! I finally found them... As I suspected, the kids were happy to make a trade for something new.

As for it becoming more difficult... That's certainly true. Maybe it will weed out the people who aren't truly interested enough to put in the effort? Well, I can dream.... ;)

Oh me oh my...people on the Facebook site are suggesting that Ace offer their parking passes when they purchase their badges.  I think this would be more problematic.

I'm all for sticking with what worked in the past.

I was not one of the people who suggested it, but I compared it with my experience buying tickets to a Lakers or Kings game with the option of purchasing parking and ended up getting my ass kicked by some overly sensitive troll on Facebook just for making that comparison.  If you don't agree with bundling purchasing badges with parking passes and if it's not something SDCCI and Ace want to do, that's fine with me.  My life is not going to end if that's not going to happen, except I don't understand why this person felt the need to throw insults in my direction just for saying it's not unheard of that two different companies can work together?

Here's what someone suggested.

(https://www.friendsofcc.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi72.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi169%2FAndrewInPhoenix%2FAce_zpsdfc2f880.jpg&hash=82aa5a7806065f06469c0892f514a5d6c6cb994a)

Here's how two other people disagreed with it, which is their right to do, although both also chose to get personal, which was unnecessary.  I had a response.

(https://www.friendsofcc.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi72.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi169%2FAndrewInPhoenix%2FAce2_zps556de58a.jpg&hash=fbbcfcb798a93f313be0f6e51981a5fc5b408fbb)

Another person chimed in disagreeing with the bundling idea.  At least she was polite.

(https://www.friendsofcc.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi72.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi169%2FAndrewInPhoenix%2FAce3_zpsdaa58229.jpg&hash=3c79d2a0f61735b1450d33876b9b0de80819a26f)

Then one of the two responds to me and gets personal for reasons I don't understand.

(https://www.friendsofcc.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi72.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi169%2FAndrewInPhoenix%2FAce4_zps7bb33f87.jpg&hash=e9c94b75b4c8e6c419774be82b2c335576741f65)

Then I respond to him and will not be checking back to see what his response is.  I'm done with this debate.

(https://www.friendsofcc.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi72.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi169%2FAndrewInPhoenix%2FAce5_zps9a43766f.jpg&hash=1ac4ae4d35f9f59c70bde454500cc38b50d98458)

A word of advice to all and no one specifically, don't go into a hissy fit when someone makes a suggestion and you don't agree with it.  It's really amazing that there are people who are so passionate about CC that they feel they need to tear down another person if they feel threatened by another person who talks about his or her experience that they don't approve of or makes a suggestion they don't agree with.

I actually was at the Hilton on PN 2 years ago as well. Not bad a tall, but not as nice as Convention Center. However it depends on what you have to tote. 2 years ago I bought a handful of the hot wheel vehicles from Mattel ... Back to the Future and Frankenberry and I'm missing one but because they are "die cast metal" they were heavy! I remember I had to keep switching hands and it was still burning my hands and arms!

Andrew, I agree, they were being awfully rude. It's fair to agree or disagree, but not to be insulting to the person who made the suggestion.  *hugs*

Unfortunately, I see a lot of that in some places online. That's one of the reasons I appreciate this site, where we can discuss and disagree without it being a personal attack.

Here's how two other people disagreed with it, which is their right to do, although both also chose to get personal, which was unnecessary.  I had a response.

Nathaniel and Chris are the same person. He's trolled multiple posts in multiple forums and has been blocked in most of them including here. Best advice I can give you is to just ignore and block. Save yourself the trouble. Logic will not work and will only lead to being inundated w/ personal messages attacking you further.

Had I known this, I would have stayed out of it completely.

It seems every online forum always has to have at least one resident troll or one village idiot with multiple handles.

Sorry Andrew you had to deal with that @#$%&. Actually Andrew, you know Nathaniel and Chris. In fact, I'm 99% certain you've had the same issues with him on this board. Maybe Khanh's being nice and not outing him, but I will. Nathaniel and Chris are Icedog aka Ilovechyna on this board. Well I guess formerly of this board ... I didn't know he got booted on here too! I was wondering why I hadn't read his "whoop whoop" and instigating conversations. Good for the mods on here. I'm too old for the conflict and this is supposed to be a "friendly" board so more power to you mods!

So Andrew it would not shock me if he made those personal comments because he knew it was you from this board. So don't sweat it! It ain't worth it. As Khanh pointed out, he's a troll and will innundate you with his @#$%&. Don't get caught up in it.

I'm actually surprised he hasn't found his way back on this board with a new name, email, profile. Probably just a matter of time before he tries but it's apparent we've got good mods who'd keep an eye out!

On that note, sorry I've gotten way off tangent here, but Alyssa and Co., I think Transmute should move up to Mod status. She's so unselfishly helpful. She was the first to post the direct link to the cc parking and I personally owe my parking to her because of that. I know a couple of others do too. Beyond that, look at her post numbers, her support of everyone. Who's more deserving. My 2 cents!

^appreciate the feedback. always take suggestions into consideration. sometimes that bump to mod will take away the forum member's enjoyment of the forum. the added responsibilities and expectations can make things different. obviously not brain surgery or anything but primary objective always to try and provide friendly place to share love of con in a way that welcomes everyone old and new. will definitely consider when time comes and we need additional mods for various forum sections.

Karatekid, I really appreciate the thought. Really, it makes me feel great to know that you see me this way. FWIW I think I would enjoy being a mod.

However, I don't think that's going to happen. First, there are a lot of mods on this site, so more are not needed at this time. Second, I'm the person who causes the mods the most work (well, perhaps apart from Icedog ;) ) so I'm not sure they'd be inclined to make me one of them. I've been (and am) active in a number of message boards before. The point of those boards is to share information and to help/support each other, which is what I do here as well. However on those other boards, there is an environment where if people are clicking and talking about something of interest, they just go on. It helps foster bonds and friendship. In simple terms, it means I'll pick up on any conversational topic (uh, like this one) and continue it if I find it fun and interesting. Now it seems that the mods come from a message board environment where such is not acceptable. I'm always getting warnings to 'stay on topic' or having my threads merged because they apparently fit in somewhere else... Well, you get the idea. I have never been treated with anything but the utmost courtesy, but I'm sure they roll their eyes often when they see me going off topic. I'm guessing there's a lot of that going on right now as they read this post.

Anyhow, the short of all that is that if they made me a mod, while I would love it, it would be like putting the fox in charge of the henhouse, as far as 'going off topic' is concerned. ;)

And since I have a feeling I've pushed my limit with this post already, I'll give them a 'freebie' get back on topic.  ;D

It's awesome that almost everyone here was able to get parking! Now what about traffic? How much time will it take to enter the garages each morning? What time should you get to the convention center lot to ensure you have a reasonable spot and not that tiny one in the corner between a pillar and the wall?

I can't believe I forgot about parking going on sale yesterday! I hate to say it but maybe their site crashing is going to work out for me.

I've always been on top of this and gotten pre paid parking, not sure what to do if I don't get it when the site comes back up.

And none of the mods have ever been a bit human and done this right?  ;) Look at your post numbers, look at your very supportive responses. If that's not a mod, don't know what is. I feel many of the regulars like Yzrfan, Kappolo, Andrew, myself, etc would all be in support. Maybe we should start a campaign!  ;D Whatever the case, it's just a "title" and ultimately your contributions from day one have been valuable.

And myself back to topic ....

I'm sure you're not alone Brian! On that note, if you don't mind walking a bit, there are lots all up and down the streets. Some really cheap. Getting parking close ... Convention Center, Hilton ... is stressful. Getting parking in general, not a big problem ... assuming you are capable and OK to walk a bit.

Yeah, I'm not worried about parking at the convention center. We never have. I always get the lot on the corner of Imperial & Park (I think). Right across the street from the stadium. I don't mind walking though. I don't care which lot, I'd just like have parking taken care of before hand so we don't have to search for somewhere every morning.

We'll see what happens I guess.

Brian, the only lot sold outright now is the convention center. There are still spots at the Hilton garage and in all other lots. Generally the lots (other than convention center and Hilton) don't sell out too quickly, so I think you should be able to park at one of those. However I recommend keeping an eye on the Ace site and trying to reload the link multiple times a day, because I suspect Ace already learned its lesson and won't be announcing the site being back up right away. ;)

Alyssa, thanks for the clarification.

Karatekid, thanks for the support.  :-*

last comment and then I'll move on. Transmute - please don't take us asking to steer comments back on topic as us singling you out in any way. we are actually very appreciative of the banter between our various forum members especially during the slow periods when there are no new announcements from CCI as it definitely helps to bridge the gap until july.

with that said, it can be difficult to help forum members with questions if their questions get buried beneath off topic comments and "me too" type responses. merging some of the threads helps to keep posts somewhat easier to locate and make this forum so full of info a bit less intimidating.

perhaps the solution isn't necessarily to ask to get back on topic or merge threads but to provide another outlet for the daily interactions that everyone enjoys? maybe a "random chat" thread so we can catch up on how everyone is doing or rant about life things or just talk about whatever?

we would never want to discourage anyone from posting especially when they have a lot to contribute.

Have fun is the bottom line.  Khanh and Zero work hard to keep things organized and welcoming/organized. That's where they're coming from...we all want the same thing for there to be a place we can exchange ideas and help each other out. Like TM did with the link.

Believe me you don't want me attempting to organize things....a few of you may remember the forum before Zero joined us....  :o
Side note, I hope to work on t-shirts this week :)

That would be fun, but it wouldn't stop 'off topic' chat, such as what we're discussing right here. If something interesting comes up, the natural tendency is to discuss it right then and there. This is what happens in a verbal conversation as well, that ebbs and flows from topic to topic.

Hello, nice to meet you :)

Given the ubiquitous nature of the internet and the size and scope of Comic Con itself, I sometimes marvel at how 'small' the geek community can be.  And there would just be too many issues to make parking attached to a badge at the moment.  I get what the guy was saying to make it a one-stop shop for the con; it's not a bad idea.  But perhaps given the fact that CCI is a non-profit, and they would essentially be collecting the fees on behalf of Ace if such an option were available, they would be commingling their funds and that's a no-no in non-profit land.  I'm guessing.
Title: Re: 2013 Parking Pass Thread --Any & All Info goes here---

It shouldn't be attached because I would wager the majority of people don't use it because they are from out of town, staying downtown, or staying on a shuttle route.  However, I do think it would be good to make it an option when purchasing a badge.  Those who need it, can buy it, and those who don't, don't.

I am looking for parking for 4 days, more importantly Saturday and Sunday.  I have a foot deformity in both feet which makes it very painful to stand or walk long periods of time.  The walk to PetCo park for shuttle took me a long time and I had a lot of pain from the whole experience last year (like 2 weeks later I still was having problems).  So parking would definitely help.

Even though I was fortunate to get my parking passes this year, additional obstacles year after year is making me sad about sdcc.  Hard to see people in social media getting all enraged about it too #firstworldproblems

I actually miss the days of sdcc in the 90s and it sucks to see an influx of more rude people, obstacles to logistics, and less cosplay being a cosplayer myself.

With that, I still have some friends without parking passes.  If I wanted to help them out, would I be able to buy a pass with the same credit card/email info as my pass?  I'm just worried it would invalidate both passes since there was a warning on their screen about people "scalping" passes would invalidate it (not sure how they would catch this, but the easiest way i can think of is to see an email/credit card buy multiple passes)
Title: Re: 2013 Parking Pass Thread --Any & All Info goes here---
Post by: KatDancer on April 22, 2013, 12:36:58 PM
During the parking pass fiasco last week, I submitted multiple requests in different browser windows, trying to get any of my requests to go through -- as you all know, the servers were randomly bouncing most but accepting some few.  I was eventually successful in purchasing parking, and as I was closing my browser windows I saw that one of my requests had been rejected on the grounds that I had already purchased parking.  So, I think they check their database before they will sell more than one parking space to you.  I did not try to use my husband's name/email/credit card to purchase a second parking space so I don't know how picky they are about address, etc.

Note:  I had to provide make, model, color and the license plate number of my car on the parking request form.  Failing to include this info caused my first "accepted" request to bounce and I had to go running outside to get it then try again (and again, and again, and again, and so on.)  However, there is also a "rental car" box that can be checked which avoids the need for specific car info.

At a minimum, you should get your friends' email addresses ahead of time.  As far as payment goes, it is my wild guess (so don't put too much stock in this) that you would be ok with using your credit card and your friend pays you back.

I bought 2 different sets of parking passes for 2 different friends. I used the same cc info for each set, but different names and email addresses. This morning both email addresses received confirmations.

So I'm guessing they track 'duplicate' passes by name or email address, *not* cc number.

I concur. I was one of the lucky ones to get through and get Convention Center parking for everyday but PN thanks to Transmute's link and recommendation on Friday but had I not, I would have been able to at least get the Hilton today thanks to everyone here. Hey guys-

I haven't been able to actually get on here for a few days because I had forgotten my PW and after 2 many attempts the system locked me out. Today, I just did a reset so I could get in and voila. Yay!

Anyway, regarding parking, since the convention and most of the Hilton is now sold out from that link. I wanted to point out an ACE lot that I noticed was NOT on the CC list that was posted. It is just around the corner from Hard Rock Hotel that is on 5th Street and directly across from the convention center. If you are standing in front of Hard Rock Hotel facing it, you'd walk 2 blocks to your right and the structure is right there across that street. So right about 7th and K street. $10 is all they charged. We parked there each day last year with no problems. In fact, the lot never even filled. They don't stand out there with signs or anything. Got in/out with ease each day and we were right there within that 2 block walk to get into the heart of the Gaslamp District for all the outdoor stuff, plus just that small walk across the tracks to get to the convention center. If you were at the Con last year, you'll remember the cute little trolley train with "The Simpsons" theme going by right there. The displays for Revolution and Grimm was there as well. Just wanted to throw it out there since the map shows an official CC released lot on that link close around 10th and J (they call it the Diamond View Tower), but they are charging as much as $20-25 a day with that $5.95 service fee tacked on for each day. This other lot can save someone some coin.

:)

Hope that helps.

I posted this on the SDCC BH's facebook page:

Quote
For those of you who want to rough it the week of CCI and don't want to get prepaid parking, here is a map of downtown parking from the Padres' website. It has some of the lots/garages on the permitstore site, but other lots not up for pre-sale - if you want to see what else it out there: http://sandiego.padres.mlb.com/sd/ballpark/transportation/index.jsp?content=downtownmap

Also, the Tailgate lot isn't bad now that the bridge is open that goes across the tracks.  I used to park there before prepaid parking  made things easier (ish) to get closer parking, and it was OK but a bit of a hike since you had to walk several blocks north so you could cross the tracks the tracks at 5th.  Now it's just walking to the bridge, crossing, and then you're good to go.  Can't believe how long it took the city to build that freaking bridge: so much easier now to get around (and the Hilton is a lot cheaper for Padre games than the Petco parking).

Currently, the Hilton Bayfront Garage will be opening at 6am during Comic-con  (the convention center parking is supposedly opening at 5am) - everyone needs to email ACE or post on their facebook page for them to move access to the Hilton Bayfront Garage up to at least 5am during comic-con to accommodate those getting into those Hall H lines!

Convention Center Lot definitely opens by 5am, sometime a bit earlier (I was there last year around ten till 5 one day and it was open).  I've been parking under the Convention Center the last few years and you can def. count on that 5am open time

Here's hoping folks at the Hilton can get the lot to open by 5

For those whom still need parking.  Last year I parked in a lot across the street from Holiday Inn By the Bay for $10.00.  It was open 24hrs.  We took the shuttle in front of Holiday Inn.  5-10 min ride to the Convention center.  The shuttles are a great source of transportation.  We take site seeing tours on the air conditioned shuttles during the con when we need a break from the crowds.

First-timer question: we are driving in from Nashville and since we lucked out in the hotel sale, we can just walk every day, so is there anywhere I can park free or cheap that is maybe a little farther out and then take a trolley or bus downtown? And leave the car in one place til Sunday?

This is a wiki specific to tailgating so take it for what it’s worth:

“Post-game tailgating is limited to two hours after the conclusion of the game. All cars must vacate the Qualcomm Stadium parking lot within a two hour window. Overnight parking is prohibited unless a special permit has been requested and granted.”

i think it's only makes sense if you drop the bags off at the hotel, drive to the airport, park the car, do comic con, then pick up the car, drive back to the hotel for the bags.

In addition the the long term parking at the airport there usually are cheaper lots a bit further out from the airport.

some people say that for the hilton next door, if you switch your pass to the next day's that you could leave it overnight but that's at your own risk.

the midnight time is loosely enforced but they can tow anytime after that if they want.

I guess my biggest concern is do they shut down the gates at midnight.  In the past, I have always left around 10-11ish and don't worry about things like that.  This year, though, I have friends who are staying in hotels nearby so I might catch up with a few of them a little later than normal.  I figure if I leave a little past midnight, it may not be a biggie, but was just curious if they lock down the garages and prevent all vehicles left from leaving.

im gonna guess it varies from location to location. some of the less close garages may not be staffed the same way. i'd say write to ACE parking and verify. they respond to their facebook and twitter accounts and i'm sure they'd respond to their emails too.

I made a mistake one year of putting my license plate and make of car instead of my mom's car for two of the days.  I was nervous but I reasoned that if they asked, I could say that my car broke down and I was using another one instead.  The attendants at the gate did not appear to even check the ticket for make and model, they just scan the paper.  Its possible that they have security roam around and check the dash for the parking pass to confirm make and license match but who knows.  Nothing happened to my car so its possible you can get away with switching out a pass.  I should note that the fine print on the pass states that the permit is licensed only to the car described in the pass although it does not state any penalties if you get caught transferring the pass, so take the risk if you want.  Can't believe that Comic Con parking passes are being scalped though.  Crazy.

I see people selling their parking passes but how? They have the make, model and licence plate of the car it's registered to. Is there a way around that tok? (I'm not looking to buy, I've got my parking pass.)

If you chose "rental" when you bought the pass, you didn't have to enter any specific vehicle information.

Yep, I have friends who do this, not to scam the system, but because they're not actually sure which car they will be taking at the time they buy the pass.

Not sure how garages in SD work but I have left a garage here (Baltimore) at 2AM before. The gates were closed but as your car approaches the gates open.

If you want to park close, you will pay at least $20 a day. If you don't mind walking, park free on the street past the train station. It seems a bit sketchy, but I haven't heard of anyone getting broken into.

Are the locations that are $20 dollars per day close to the convention? Or would I be paying $20 to walk from an outrageous distance?

Past years, some of the lots around Petco Park, but I think most of the ACE parking lots are sold out. There are others, and those others are first come, first served. It's closer than the free parking on the street. The idea of parking at Qualcomm and taking the shuttle sounds to be a good idea too. There's free parking at Balboa Park/Zoo, but I don't think there's a shuttle from there but there is a bus. Probably the worst choice.

Ive driven for 8 years and I Just park in the parking structure behind the hard rock. I never paid more than $80 for 5 days. but maybe that was with a discount from staying at the Marriott across the street. Thats about $16 a day and you can split it with whoever went with you.

I wouldn't feel comfortable leaving my car far away. I'd be afraid of it getting stolen or broken into. Plus, being so close, you can put stuff in the car whenever you want instead of carrying it around.

Downside is you gotta get there very early to get a spot each day, if your not leaving it overnight.

I guess petco park isn't far, and you can walk across the skywalk from the bayfront hotel by hall H. Not sure about pricing or how early you need to park or if they allow overnight parking, and if they have overnight security though.

Here's a useful website I just came across.

http://en.parkopedia.com/parking/san_diego/

Just scroll down to the convention center area and it will pop open graphics on where you can park.  I recommend you go to satellite view so that you can see which are lots and which are hotel parking areas or covered garages.  I know this means extra work, but if you have time, it might pay to take a trip downtown so that you can scope out where the lots are, what streets you take it get in, etc.  Also, note that some lots get bought out by companies for promotion.  For instance, last year, the lot at Island and First Ave was taken over by History Channel for their BBQ roadshow, so be aware some lots will be taken out.  Also, once you have a list of lots you want to go, maybe get there early on Wednesday or Thursday and take a quick drive around to shop for a competitive price.  I have to think most lot operators know what the going rate is around them, so you may not get much of a deal if one at all (maybe pay $18 all day instead of $20, $20 instead of $25, etc.).  Most of us choose to go to the ACE parking website because in years past, driving around that area in the morning SUCKED!  If you couldn't get your preferred lot, you basically had to wander around until you found a nearby lot and just parked there.  Now, most of us have no qualms about the higher rates (and service fees they charge) all for the name of convenience.

As someone noted earlier, if you go on Harbor and drive south of the convention center, there is parking along that road as well as the area around it.  As far as I know, there are no restrictions but it is in a middle of a bunch of warehouses, loading stations, car shops, etc.  Google Maps says the walk can be anywhere from a .5 to .7 walk.  In the day, this should not be a prob, but night time you may want to walk with a group in that area.

I just sent another email to ACE Parking via the website contact page to see if they will open the Hilton Bayfront Garage by 5AM on Friday and Saturday morning of Comic-con so that those that have paid to park there won't miss out on the chance of getting into Hall H on those days (last year I was there by 6:30am and in line before 7am and didn't get into Hall H until much later in the day. The most recent info I received from ACE awhile back is that the Hilton Bayfront hours would be from 6am to 2am - while the convention center garage is opening at 5am - it seems like they should be able to do the same 5am open for the Hilton Bayfront. If everyone goes to the ACE parking page and sends and email via the Contact Us section - maybe we can put the heat on :)

Title: Convention Center parking pass for sale - all five days
Post by: andrewsims on June 26, 2013, 05:36:06 PM
Hey everyone,
I purchased a parking pass for the San Diego Convention Center for all five days (July 17 - 21), mistakenly thinking that overnight parking was allowed. I came to realize today it's NOT allowed, which leaves me with parking passes I can't use because I need somewhere to park overnight.

I read in a separate thread that people have been selling their parking passes, and I would like to do the same. While they do have my name and car info on them, others said that they do not check this information and just scan the bar code.

Ideally, I would like to sell all the passes at once since that would just be easiest. I am offering all five for $70 (that's $10 less than I paid). If you are interested, or want to buy just a few of the days, please reply and/or e-mail me: [email protected].

When you purchase, I can forward you the parking passes via e-mail. Alternatively, I can meet you at Comic Con or in the West LA area and hand them to you. Whichever way we do it, I will take the money at the same time.

If you have any questions just reply here or e-mail me at the address above! Thanks.

k, this is a tricky post.  Our policy has been to disallow all selling- but this is a great deal and you *are* selling these at a loss.  I'm going to let it ride & merge this in with the parking pass thread with the understanding that we do not endorse the sale & this is with the usual caveat 'buyer beware'.

Personally, i'd at least sell the four days together & maybe the preview night to one person.

Any info out there on what happens if you happen to be a bit earlier than that?  Do they open exactly at 5am or if you happen to be a bit early would they let you in?

And how's the traffic line for Convention center parking that early in the morning?  Big long line or drive right in once you get to the entrance?

This will be my first time coming in so early and parking at the Convention Center.  Did Hilton last year.

Anyone ever park at the 6th and k parkade? I'll be staying at the Omni right across the street and would rather not have to pay $38 for valet parking.

How much might it be per day (24hrs)? How fast does it fill up? Will there still be spots available around 3:00pm on Wednesday?

You might not have a choice , because most do not have overnight parking, only at the hotels can you park over night

In 2011 I parked at Qualcomm early thursday and then took the Greenline in to the Con where I stayed till sunday and returned to my car. Does anyone know if I can keep my car at Qualcomm for the full 4 days? The MTS website says all trolly stations have a 24 hour parking limit, but since this is under the stadium jurisdiction and there is so much parking, is it different? I dont want to pay 25 dollars a day to park at my hotel (westin).

I'm staying at a hotel 9 blocks from the convention center, but I was going to rent a car for the 5 days I'll be in SD (flying in from NY).  I was hoping to visit the zoo and a few of the famous taco spots, maybe go to the beach or something...

I'm starting to wonder if it will be worth it for me to rent this car?

Should I cancel my reservation & save the $200 for the rental + $150 for parking at the hotel?

When were you planning on going to the zoo and leaving the con? If this is one day I would absolutely get a car for just one day. Going to the Con is sort of one stop shopping for food, entertainment, and shopping, so as long as you are there I'd take advantage of that.

I highly recommend just renting a car for the one day you are going to the zoo.  Use the shuttle system for the con:  http://www.comic-con.org/cci/shuttles.

Or just take the trolley or taxis to and from your hotel.

The close time might not be strictly enforced but they do reserve the right to tow as needed after the "close" time so while you may hear others tell you they were able to park til 1 or 2am with no problem, just be mindful of the time...

Since this is actually a hotel parking lot, how would they ever be able to enforce the no overnight parking for comic-con? It's not like we can only park in certain floors. Anyone have experience parking at the bayfront lot overnight?

The parking lots by Petco had spots available before closing, so you may try to get parking there.  Otherwise, Khaaanh's suggestion on Horton is good.  Best suggestion is the get there early (like say 5:30 to 6:30) and cruise around to find a lot.  Forget about the convention center or Hilton, those spots were all pre-sold but everywhere else should be good.

There is a per car charge, the amount specific to your hotel and it adds up, anywhere from $20 to $40 per day :(

Title: Parking after checkout Sunday
Post by: AreTwo on July 20, 2013, 10:52:08 PM
I was just informed by our hotel (Marriott Gaslamp) that we have to have our car out no later than 2 p.m. Sunday--which is a bit of a problem if we're getting up early early early for the Hall H line and will be in panels. I made the dangerous assumption that since we were paying so much to park there each day, they'd be OK with us keeping our car there for the day if we paid extra, but according to the valet that's not allowable though they get that request a lot.

So now we're in the position of having to secure a parking place just a few hours from now, with everything booked. Obviously this poses a pretty big logistical problem with us being able to attend the panels we'd been planning to go to. Driving way the heck up to Qualcom stadium or something and waiting for the trollies service to start completely defeats the purpose of having a hotel a block away from the convention center and puts us at a severe disadvantage in terms of line position.

Any advice? This can't be the first time people have encountered this.
