The Writer's Danger Room

Young mutants come to Professor Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters to learn how to control their mutant powers (and one day become X-Men). Much of their training takes place inside the school's awesome "Danger Room." If you want to be an X-man, you have to train like one. Well, the same goes for writers. If you want to be one, you have to train like one, too. But how much time do you usually find at Comic-Con to sit down and actually practice your craft? In the Writer's Danger Room, you'll spend a solid hour doing short, powerful writing exercises that will test your talents, sharpen your skills, and push you past what you thought you could do. Corey Rothermel (co-author of Epic Win!: The Geek's Guide to the Journey from Fan to Creator) will facilitate this interactive workshop open to writers of all ages and skill levels. Bring a pencil and paper and your sense of adventure!

My top picks for hidden gems--- perhaps not typical but certainly thought provoking panels on Thursday

For all the ARGO fans out there-- did you know Kirby wrote the script for teh fictitional movie!
10:00am — 11:00am
Jack Kirby's Consciousness, Roger Zelazny's Lord of Light, Barry Ira Geller, and the Real Argo
Room 5AB

Finally, the fascinating truth about the real CIA Argo mission! Hear how Jack Kirby and Barry Ira Geller's script and production designs for Lord of Light made the actual Argo mission successful, as recently testified to by the "Sons of the Iranian Revolution." The Kirby/Geller work, though not mentioned in the Oscar-winning film, rests in the International Spy Museum forever. Discover the unbelievable awareness and consciousness of Jack Kirby as remembered by Barry Ira Geller, one of the last people to have creatively partnered with Jack. Kirby was the Rembrandt of comic art, the Einstein of superhero visions, and the creator of the modern romance genre. Hear Mike Royer, arguably the best Silver Age inker-certainly Jack Kirby's favorite-give the real story behind the inking of these fantastic series!

1:30pm — 2:30pm
Nanotechnology in Sci-Fi: Fact or Fiction
Room 8

Robin Ihnfeldt, Ph.D. (president/CEO. General Engineering and Research), Aaron Saunders, Ph.D. (research lead, nanoComposix), Darren Lipomi, Ph.D. (associate professor of nanoengineering, UCSD), Jeanne Lemaster, MS (graduate researcher in nanoengineering, UCSD), and Chava Angell, MS (graduate researcher in nanoengineering, UCSD) discuss the use of nanotechnology in popular science fiction. These scientists and engineers will talk about how nanotechnology is portrayed in TV and film from nanites to Mark 42 armor and compare it to cutting edge research applications in nanotechnology today.

3:00pm — 4:00pm
Why Will Eisner Still Matters at 100
Room 9

Born 100 years ago, Will Eisner not only recognized the future potential of comics at an early age but also worked his whole life to help achieve those goals. But how could Will Eisner still be relevant to us today? Join Paul Levitz (former president of DC Comics, author of Will Eisner: Champion of the Graphic Novel, educator, comics historian), Jackie Estrada (administrator, Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards), Paul Dini (Harley Quinn co-creator, writer, producer), Maggie Thompson (writer, editor, comics historian), and maybe a surprise special guest to discover why.

7:15pm —  8:15pm
12 Monkeys
Room 6BCF

Attention, time travelers! After an exciting season of searching for, and ultimately finding, the Witness, everyone was stunned by the revelations in the finale. The executive producer and cast of this SYFY hit series look back at the show's most talked-about moments and tease the upcoming fourth and final season. You won't want to miss some exclusive surprises!

8:00pm —  9:00pm
Whose Team Are You on? The Psychology of World Beliefs and Personality
Room 29AB

In a landscape of intense fictional conflict with Iron Man versus Captain America, Batman versus Superman, Justice League versus the Avengers-which team are you on? A research study conducted by April Fugett, PhD and Keith W. Beard, PsyD (professors of psychology, Marshall University), and Jacob Mills, MA and Britani Black, MA (doctoral students, Marshall University) examined how personality and world beliefs factor into preferences for certain characters, teams, and even specific shows in popular culture. Many people have strong world views and strong character preferences that they identify with, support, follow closely, and spend money on in the forms of merchandise and even brand identity. This support, from Tumblr posts to fan-created merchandise, often available months before retail, affects every aspect of the comic, television, and cinematic universes. This information could be used to better promote and engage people with specific brand and character choices while also giving individuals insight into their own characters and media preferences.

and last but not least the most intriguing panel:
10:00pm —  12:00am
Netflix Surprise Screening
Horton Grand Theatre
Netflix will have a surprise screening of an upcoming original movie before its premiere. Stay tuned and visit the Netflix booth on the convention floor to learn more!

What kind of cruel universe has panels with Sienkiewicz, Dave Gibbons, and the combined awesomeness of Doug Wagner, Skottie Young, Cat Staggs, and Gail Simone ALL AT THE SAME TIME.

Any of those will be awesome, for other panels going to limit myself to 3 (and 2 backups for the one that might be hard to get in to.)

10:00am - 11:00am
Dinosaurs, Monsters, Movies and The Blues: Worlds of William Stout
Room 32AB

Comic-Con veteran (he's been to every single one) William Stout (Wizards, Conan the Barbarian, Pan's Labyrinth, Walt Disney's Dinosaur) delivers an exciting story- and picture-filled lecture on a varied career that includes comics, movie design, book illustration, movie posters, LP and CD covers, prehistoric life murals, theme park designs, Antarctica, and his passion for the blues.

12:00pm - 1:00pm
IDW: Walter Simonson
Room 9

Living legend Walter Simonson is joined by the person most qualified to interview him on a spotlight panel-his wife, the noted comics writer and editor Louise Simonson. If you've never heard Simonson on a panel before, this will be a true treat because Walter is not only a master of sequential stories but also a brilliant raconteur who will enthrall you with stories spanning his nearly 50-year career!

4:30pm - 5:30pm
R. L. Stine, Creator of Goosebumps
Room 6DE

Beware: You're in for a scare! R. L. Stine, author of the bestselling children's book series Goosebumps, is at Comic-Con for the first time. Come meet the man who has given you 25 years of fears.

backup panels for R. L. Stine
4:30pm - 5:30pm
Spotlight on R. Sikoryak
Room 4

R. Sikoryak (Masterpiece Comics) is a master of the satirical graphic novel adaptation. Heidi Macdonald (The Beat, Publishers Weekly) leads a conversation with Sikoryak about his two most recent projects: Terms & Conditions, which is a 99-page, word-for-word adaptation of the iTunes terms and conditions agreement, and The Unquotable Trump, which sets Donald Trump quotes from the 2016 presidential election in classic comic book covers, employing hero and villain tropes to devastating effect.
OR
4:30pm - 6:00pm
American Gods: Collaboration to the Nth Degree
Room 2

Scott Hampton will take the audience step by step through the process of making a comics page for the Dark Horse American Gods comic, beginning with the text from the novel by Neil Gaiman, then to script and layout from P. Craig Russell, next to lettering by Rick Parker, then to finished line art, and finally painting and digital coloring by Scott. Scott's work on Silverheels from Pacific Comics in 1983 is regarded as the first continuing painted comic of US origin. His work includes illustrations for Batman, The Sandman, Black Widow, Hellraiser, and Star Trek, as well as Magic: The Gathering cards.

Still need to look at surrounding panels, for example the Moffat/Sherlock comics one is followed by the Mattel/WWE panel which will likely make it harder to get in to.

Heroes at the Mic
Neil Morgan Auditorium, San Diego Central Library

The power of podcasting has made it possible to get pop culture news and interviews almost anywhere you can get a cell phone signal. Learn how this panel of top geek broadcasters built their shows, overcame obstacles, and had a grand time bringing you the scoops on comics, films, books, and gaming! Neal Hallford (Uncharted Regions) moderates a panel with Miguel Rodriguez (Horrible Imaginings Podcast), Gene Turnbow (Krypton Radio), Keith Lane (Two Gay Geeks), Kristin Naomi (LowBlow Podcast), and Jacqueline Lopez (Seven of Wine).

1:00pm - 2:00pm
CBLDF: She Changed Comics
Room 11

Meet the women who changed free expression in comics! From the turn of the 20th century to today, women have overcome censorship and more to make comics, inspiring today's landscape of increasingly diverse and empowering comics storytelling. Join Joyce Farmer (Special Exits, Tits & Clits), Thi Bui (The Best We Could Do), Jennifer L Holm (Babymouse, Sunny Side Up), CBLDF editorial director Betsy Gomez (She Changed Comics), and more for a discussion about the women who changed the format.

4:00pm - 5:00pm
The Forgotten Trio: Letterers, Inkers, and Colorists
Room 9

Many think of the artist and the writer as the masterminds behind all great comics. Little do many know how much credit should go to the colorists, inkers and letterers who put in hours of work, only to receive minimal recognition. A follow-up to last year's success, Jessica Tseang (founder The Comic Book Girl, Little Geek Girls) lead a discussion with Dave Lanphear (letterer DC Comics Future Quest Showcase, Matt Wagner’s Mage), Le Beau Underwood (inker Marvel’s Deadpool, Spider-man, DC Comics Suicide Squad), Kelly Fitzpatrick (colorist DC Comics Batman 66, Archie Comics Reggie and Me), Veronica Gandini (DC Comics Rebirth: Red Hood and the Outlaws, Marvel Comics The Mighty Thor), and other comic book veterans, on how the industry can change, the importance of their work, a brief look into their daily lives, and how to break into their career. There will also be a Q&A for budding colorists, inkers and letterers.

5:30pm - 6:30pm
Small Press Beyond the Wall
Room 26AB

Fernando "Fers" Sánchez Antillón (Soulkeepers), Adalisa Zarate (Writer's Block), Gina Chacón (Studio XIII), Alejandra Zuñiga (Studio XIII), Adriana De La Torre (Studio XIII), and Joel Ojeda Lopez (Zenescope Entertainment) discuss the challenges of creating, publishing, and distributing comic books in Mexico under the shadow of the American industry. Moderated by Martín Arceo (Santos Cómics).

7:00pm - 8:00pm
International Creator Slam: Europe Versus USA
Room 32AB

Believe it or not, there's more than one way to make a great comic! Come see American and European creators discuss differences and similarities in creating comics on the two sides of the Atlantic with Nick Abadzis (Laika, US/UK), José Luis Munuera (Les Campbell, Spain/France), and Ted Naifeh (Night's Dominion, USA). Free European comics tote bags and goodies for all attendees.

Top 3, in order:
1. The Forgotten Trio: Letterers, Inkers, and Colorists
2. Heroes at the Mic
3. International Creator Slam: Europe Versus USA
