The vehicle traffic thing makes me feel safer. As sad as it is that we need to think about this, it's an important step in preventing one type of terrorism that we've seen in Europe and Canada.

It wasn't terrorism, but a crazy guy drove into a crowd in NY Times Square last year, too.

I hadn't thought of this aspect of the change, but you are right.

I'm stoked for this change.  I've been waiting for it to happen for a long, long time.  Not only should it be safer, but it should alleviate a lot of the pedestrian congestion.

It's not just that, remember in 2012 when that Twilight fan was killed crossing the street at Harbor?

Harbor Drive Closure Planned For Comic-Con 2018
The San Diego Convention Center, the City of San Diego and the Port of San Diego have announced a new traffic route that creates a pedestrian-only experience during Comic-Con International 2018.

HARBOR DRIVE WILL BE CLOSED TO VEHICLE TRAFFIC (including bikes, scooters and skateboards) between First Avenue and Park Boulevard during Comic-Con, with the exception of shuttle buses and emergency vehicles. Cars will be screened.

ONLY BADGED MEMBERS (attendees of Comic-Con 2018) may access the front drive, stairs and surrounding sidewalks of the San Diego Convention Center.

By closing Harbor Drive, shuttles will be allowed to load and unload passengers directly from the street.

Any exhibitor or attendee with a parking pass for the Ace Parking garage directly underneath the San Diego Convention Center will be allowed to drive through. All other drivers will be diverted away from the Convention Center.

When Is This Happening?
Harbor Drive will be closed to traffic (including bikes, scooters and skateboards) on the following days and times:

WEDNESDAY, JULY 18 (3:00 PM–9:00 PM)
THURSDAY, JULY 19 (7:00 AM–9:00 PM)
FRIDAY, JULY 20 (7:00 AM–9:00 PM)
SATURDAY, JULY 21 (7:00 AM–9:00 PM)
SUNDAY, JULY 22 (7:00 AM–7:00 PM)
Harbor Drive will reopen to traffic after the hours listed above.

I think this is great, but I do feel bad for my friend who will be hanging out for a couple days without a badge.
Casey Jones you better, watch your speed
Trouble ahead, trouble behind
And you know that notion just crossed my mind

Does this also mean no activations/offsites on the Hilton lawn and back side of the convention center? That's going to be a lot of empty space.

It looks like they are going to be on Imperial drive. I didn’t think there was any room over there

SHould be interesting for me.  I didn't get Convention Center Parking, so I'll be at the Hilton parking everyday.  Although, my route was always the same, get off the 5 on Front Street and take the straight shot down to the convention center.  Always very easy.  I'm curious how the drive coming from the east on Harbor will be to get to the Hilton Parking.  Although if I am reading this right, I may still be able to drive my usual route if I get there before 7.

I wonder, since they are expanding the badge-only area around the convention center if they mean to have the badge readers outside now?  Also, I wonder if this means less of those truck billboards you always see driving back and forth in front of the convention center?

If you don't have a badge, you won't be allowed on the sidewalk or the Hall H waiting area.

That's going to cause problems for Hall H Line pizza delivery haha.

But really, I think this is a generally great idea.  Only a bit concerned about people who need to drive in the area.  For example, I've taken Lyft's from the MGH to the Hilton Bayfront before (lmao I know it's lazy but it was faster than walking and I was in a time crunch).  Now this type of traffic will have to go into the Gaslamp to do this.  BUT it's a sacrifice I'm willing to make.  Now that the congestion will be relieved, walking this might not be too bad anyway!

The FAQs (You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login) have this:
Quote
HOW DOES THE PUBLIC ACCESS THE BAY/WATERFRONT?
Members of the public will be able to access the waterfront from the Harbor Drive
Pedestrian Bridge. Follow the sidewalk adjacent to the Hilton Bayfront Hotel to access the
waterfront promenade and parks.
That makes it seem like there could still be activations over there. The map doesn't really show that area.

Or am I misinterpreting?

I think your correct.  I don't see them not using that prime real estate behind the convention center.

that is the petco interactive zone or whatever the new name is this year.  Think they will still have out back but will have to see.  Adult swim and FX usually take those spots and do a pretty great job.

I for one am very excited for the change.  Getting across the street from hotels and off sites should be way quicker.  The biggest impact I think will be the shuttles being on Harbor and not on that little street right in front of sidewalk.  If that all becomes foot traffic it should significantly cut down the amount of time/effort it takes getting from one side of the convention center to the other.

Isn't that the Petco Interactive Zone? The area [member=1291]semigeekgirl[/member] and I were talking about isn't really shown on the map.
There are also activations between the hotels (on the other side of Harbor Drive-Omni, etc.) and the train tracks. I think they will still be activations by the Hilton. As [member=3710]SteveD[/member] said, it's too valuable to just let it be empty. I am only guessing though.

With the shuttle stops out on Harbor, this is going to greatly improved walking in front of the Convention Center. I like that for sure.

Perhaps, all activations (including FX and Adult Swim) will now be in those designated spots.  Maybe the back area behind the convention center will be for line management (all the early morning lines now).

I can’t imagine them giving up that prime real-estate in the back. I just need to remember to always have my badge when we leave the Hilton
