Relationships will be tested, a new Shadowhunter named Sebastian has joined the fray, and the Seelie Queen will step out of the shadows. Arkham Asylum houses some of Gotham City's most disturbed villains. But are they truly "insane?" Eisner-nominated writer Tom King (Batman, The Sheriff of Babylon, The Vision)-mastermind of this summer's Batman story arc, The War of Jokes and Riddles- joins real-life forensic psychiatrists Praveen R. Kambam, MD and Vasilis K. Pozios, MD (Broadcast Thought) to explore the mental disorders that plague the Dark Knight's rogues' gallery, offering behavioral analyses of the Joker, Harley Quinn, Two-Face, the Riddler, and other Bat-villains. Are these characters psychotic, or are they psychopaths? What's the difference? The forensic psychiatrists discuss the meaning of these terms and explain how criminal defendants are found "not guilty by reason of insanity" and what happens when they are committed to a real-world Arkham Asylum. They will also have a segment on crossover appeal: how to get your comic book reading patrons to like manga and vice versa. Lisa Smith (Pepperdine University) presents her approach to teaching analytical writing in a first-year composition class using Matt Fraction and David Aja's Hawkeye: My Life as a Weapon, providing practical, constructive advice on how to use comics to improve students' analytical writing skills. Chris Kuhlow (University of Akron) examines her local comic book shop as a sponsor of multimodal literacy and the pedagogical implications of this sponsorship on the teaching of writing in freshman composition. James "Skip" Harvey (University of Missouri School of Journalism) reports on a two-year study investigating the literary practices of high school students working with a local artist to create comics and digital compositions.

While Musk has yet to build a flying exosuit or a J.A.R.V.I.S.-style assistant, others have. These inventors will join moderator Steve Broback (Dent the Future, LLC) to discuss their innovations-ones that could have come straight out of Stark Industries. Panelists include inventor and TED speaker Richard Browning (founder of Gravity.co), who actually flies via his jet engine-powered suit.

We live in a culture dominated by visual imagery. Because our culture is so hyper-visual, literacy is and should be understood as multimodal. Comics and graphic novels can provide a means by which we can begin to examine these multimodal literacies from an interdisciplinary perspective. Comic corporations such as Marvel, with their STEM challenge for girls, have started to examine these interdisciplinary connections, but more needs to be done in the public school setting. Matthew Sutherlin (Henderson State University), Michelle Johnson (Henderson State University), and Amy Counts (Lakeside Middle School) will focus on three STEAM-Y components of a new educational narrative.
