Coloring Books for Adults
« on: January 15, 2016, 06:22:54 AM »
Don't know if you've all noticed it like I have, but Coloring Books for Adults appears to be all the rage lately. Bookstore like B&N have entire sections of coloring books, as well as Target and Costco, plus all the crayons, pens, and pencils that go along with it...

The thing that I haven't seen much but thought that would make a perfect Coloring Book for Adults would be reproductions of our favorite classic Comic Book issues without color of course so that you can have all the fun of your favorite colorist.

Has anyone seen something like this? I want to color, but most of the coloring books that the stores carry are just not that interesting, although there is one for the Game of Thrones that's at least interesting.

Just wondering.

My sister in law got the GoT one. It's really good. Very impressed with it.

I have noticed this, and I've been wondering about it. I'm not sure why it's gotten popular again, except maybe that it's a backlash to all of the electronic things we do now?

Regardless, if you have the talent and interest, it's an easy and portable hobby.

I have the GOT one as well! I really like it for de-stressing my brain - I actually colored in it the night before SDCC pre-reg, and I think it helped me to get a full night of sleep! The spaces to color in are really tiny though, so I sometimes end up with a pinched nerve in my pointer finger if I'm not careful (which is kind of silly, haha)!

I have the Harry Potter one and I like it a lot. It's good for de-stressing, with the added benefit of Harry Potter being awesome.

This weekend at Barnes and Noble I saw this one as well as a coloring book from Marvel for Deadpool, so it finally looks like the Comic Book companies are getting into the mix.

Enjoy your coloring, but try not to hurt yourself.

Elfquest had a Kickstarter for The Art of Elfquest (I was out of the loop for a while with EQ stuff, and totally missed it!)-one of the bonus items for pledging was a coloring book. It is gorgeous! I really wish I had gotten one.

Exactly, that's awesome. Don't see why more Comic Book companies wouldn't do this.

I'd like to color Superman, or Batman, or X-Men, or Watchmen...

My take/theory:

Art is inherent in humans (possibly primates).  We all have creative minds, and that creativity needs to be nurtured and quenched.  Some of us take up music (raises hand), some drama, digital media, or conventional art.  Some aren't confident in their natural abilities when it comes to visual arts (painting, sculpting, drawing, etc) so the adult coloring books are a way for ANYONE to let their creative juices flow without having to start with a blank canvas or something.  We have all likely been coloring since before we could talk in sentences (I have an 18 month old who's been scribbling with crayons on paper for several months now), so we all likely feel confident to some degree in our 'basic' coloring skills.

These are a very cool outlet for anyone to get their artistic personality on, regardless of the books' themes.  I got my wife (also a music teacher, though she's now an Administrator and out of the classroom) some coloring books as Christmas gifts, and we've found they're fun short-term distractions from life.  I imagine they'd be great on plane flights, commuting, or anything where one is sitting for long(ish) periods of time.

No doubt!  Imagine an X-Men coloring book that came with a colored pencil pack that were the exact shades of colors for the characters!  I would think that type of thing would sell pretty well: especially if, say, the coloring "book" is a specific comic issue.  How rad would it be to color a 'Dark Phoenix' comic issue, or the 'Broken Bat' Bane vs Batman issue with all the large panels of the fight?!?!

(HELLO DC, Marvel, etc: make this happen for Comic-Con!!!)

OOH! Also these make a great gift idea with a small set of coloured pencils. Pretty reasonable price wise, and I find that adults are really appreciating it lately. Maybe most of us don't have enough creative outlets?

I LOVE these. I love to paint with watercolors, and actually watercolors are pretty fun to use on the adult coloring books. It's super relaxing, and you can't really "mess up" with watercolors. I definitely recommend using them!
