Title: SDCC 2019 Open Registration: How did you do?
Post by: Zero on November 10, 2018, 10:18:33 AM
Now that Comic-Con 2019's open registration sale is over, how did you do, everyone?

Did you get the badges you wanted?

I got zero, Zero. I am going to try for WonderCon.  I just haven't been to any in Southern Cal, many attempts no reward.

My group of 6 people got sorted. I already had my badge, and most of my friends had badges, but we had a small buying group for Open Reg. We were running about 14 codes. 3 got in, we got all the badges we needed, I gave the third one away via the shoutbox.

Edit: now time to get ready for hotelpocalypse.

Got all my browsers working (thanks for telling me to clear cache - it worked) and had 8 sessions going*.

Only 1 got in about the 55 minute mark and I was able get thur/sun. All others never got in. Grateful that we got something but man this was a rough one!

*Edited to say I had 8 people in my buying group trying for badges who all had to work today and so I ran all the sessions - 3 were shut out during pre-reg*

How'd you get 8 registration codes?

How'd you get 8 registration codes?

All my group's eligible codes - everyone had to work today except me so I had to run them all

I got my tickets during PreReg but had extra codes to help with OpenReg. I got in at the end when Sunday was available but at that point I couldn’t find people to buy for.   :o. The BenEatsRiceGroup did a great job and was able to get 4 days for almost everyone and then buy badges for people in other groups.

Third time's the charm! One of my buying group got in. We were able to get Thursday and Sunday! This will be our first year! I'm sure it's going to be extra amazing because it's the 50th anniversary too! I can't wait!  ;D ;D

I got 4 days in Pre reg through buying group, then got PN for myself and PN+4 days for two buying group mates. This is my 2nd year going and my 1st time attending preview night.

No PN, but I am still in good shape due to getting 4-days in the last sale. I was able to help out 3 group members though! They got badges so today was a win in my book!

No PN for me, and while I had a couple codes, none of them got in to help anyone :(  But the BG kicked @$$ and all got at least something!

In the Batgirl/Teri group we managed a minimum of 4 days for everyone and even got to help out a good number of people from other groups!

My little group did pretty well, all things considered. 8 of us altogether; 3 got 4 days in Pre-Reg, and today we got another 3 4 days and 2 Thursday and Sunday. So everyone got at least 2 days! There were a few moments when I was convinced no one was getting anything at all, so I’m very happy!

None of my friends/family got in today (and none of us got in during pre-reg either, so I really hope the CCI gods start being nicer to us), but thanks to [member=846]rando[/member] , [member=268]Kevin Rutan[/member] , and [member=278]mdla[/member] my sister got her preview night badge (which was a HUGE relief for me since it means I am no longer at risk of having to do Tokidoki for her ;D), one of our friends got Friday after missing it in pre-reg, a first timer friend got all four days (he is super excited), and our Mom, who doesn't know yet, got a Sunday badge so she can attend her first ever (and maybe only ever) con.

Thank you so much to [member=314]Transmute Jun[/member] for organizing our group and to all the other group leaders for keeping such an awesome and helpful system going :)!!

I picked up a Thursday badge only, but it’s ok. I volunteer precon, And make Saturday my off day. I usually use Friday for offsite stuff, and head home on Sunday. So I guess I’m saying my minimum expectations were fulfilled.

7 codes trying for 3 badges. One got in with Thurs/Sun left, but we were Saturday or bust, so didn't buy anything.

First year joining a larger group. About 20 computers up and only 3 got in. Sisters and I were able to complete our pass to include preview, 2 others were able to get 4 days and one for 2(I think) Still needed my cousins and uncle’s passes, which didn’t happen.

The [member=4801]BenEatsRice[/member] buying group was spectacular...again.  I couldn't believe I was able to get in twice and was able to help others as well.  Ben was cool and calm and that helped me be calm as I typed away.  I was running computers in 2 different rooms, and had to run between them (at work..shhhhh!)  I had my stash of Mallomars, which kept me hyped up, too.  This is the lifeblood of fandom.. helping, trusting...I love it!

All hail the buying groups leaders, the tech gurus, the helpers who were there even though they already had their badges, and..heck..all hail us all.  Yes!!!

Our group of six got all the days we wanted! (4days for most of us, PN for a couple of us who were coming in early)

Even after we secured an extra couple of codes from friends not going, and made a pact with another group of six, AND was offered help from people here at FoCC (shout-out to @geargirl), I still had a bad feeling about today.

But one in our group got in st 9:09, and the moment she confirmed purchases, I got in. And then we had one more session get in, in which we were able to help a couple of my friends who were in a group of six. Unfortunately they got otherwise shut out, so it’ll be only them two.

So overall I’m happy, but I’m also sympathetic those who didn’t get in.

After my entire group got shut out during Returning Registration, I was thrilled to get in right away at 9:07 PST. Got 4 day+PN for my group of three.

This will be my fifth year attending (out of 8 years trying), but this is the first and only time I've gotten PN, so I'm super excited!

Was hoping to help out others on the forum with our other two codes, but neither ended up getting in.

I was able to get 4Day+PN during return reg, but I logged on with a few personal reg codes to help out others. Our buying group did awesome! Managed to fill in a nice chunk of PNs for people in the group. If you discount PN, I think we got 100% of my group what they wanted (I need to double-check this, cause that sounds crazy) :o. I got in twice and was able to get 3 for my group plus another 3 for a different group. Wow!

We had 7 codes and were trying for 4 PN badges and 1 badge for any days (the extra codes were from people who didn't want PN) - no one got in. :( The rest of my buying group was covered with at least 4 days so only one person (who was new this year) was shut out.

Wow! My son and I have only attempted to go to SDCC twice, first in 2017 and again today, and both times thanks to the BenEatsRice buying group, we have gotten 4 day badges (no PN)!!!  For all those that have been trying for years and struck out, getting into a group is the only way to go!! Thanks Ben! You are THE MAN!

Our group had 32 people looking for badges, 12 looking for PN-only (who had 4 days from the presale) then the rest looking for full weekend or various other days. Interestingly, we had a bunch of people get in at the beginning and were able to get PN for all 12 PN-only people & full weekend/PN for 4 others! But, our rate of entry slowed down after that so unfortunately missed Saturday for a few people. But we were able to get the other days for the rest of the list.

I've never been in this situation, but I've always wondered about the logistics of balancing wanting to get PN vs wanting to get everyone in the group at least the main days. So if I got 4 days during Returning Reg and am looking for PN, if I get in immediately, do I give up my slot to someone who doesn't have any days, or do I grab myself PN.

I already had PN but had 4 more codes to run today for the group.  1 got in for Sunday only but by that time the entire group already had been bought for so I wasn't much help.  My first thanks goes to the awesome FOCC folks that put together the spreadsheets and forum, wouldn't be going to SDCC without you.  Second thanks is to the members of the cross group that hooked some of my folks out, you made a bunch of people super happy.  Finally, thanks so much to my awesome buying group!  They were amazing today, such a bunch of rock stars working together.  I won't throw his name out but we had 1 person in particular that got in 6 times and bought 18 badges for our group!!!!!  Needless to say I believe he is on a flight to Vegas right now  :P

I can’t speak for everyone but personally speaking if I already had 4 days then I’d rather give up my slot for someone who doesn’t have any days. I’m quite okay with sacrificing preview night in exchange for making someone very happy.

Cant speak for every group but you buy for yourself and whoever is on top of the list. in ours, priority for OpenReg is given first to those who didn’t get the main days during RetReg, then to those who were at RetReg and want PN and finally to new members.

Yes, it is a balancing act. For our group, we sort them by which day is likely to sell out first, but within each sort group it’s randomized. So at the top of the list would be all requests with PN (so PN only as well as 4 days+PN) then people who want 4 days (or days including Saturday), Friday, and finally people who only want Thurs/Sun.

Most of the time we aren’t able to get too many people PN but are able to get everything else (or nearly everything else). This year was an anomaly; for some reason we had more people get in at the beginning than the middle, so we knocked out all the PN requests but missed Saturday for a few people. We did get the other days for everyone that wanted them though, so no one was shut out.

We had six people left over after returning registration (newbies who'd just joined.) Thirteen codes running, the rest of my group's codes were tied up in PN days and unable to participate.

We had three sessions get in before Saturday sold out. So we got our 3x 4-day badges and 3x Fri-Sat. badges for our group, basically exactly what they wanted each.

I sent the additional code that got in to Lauranna, on the forum, to buy for her people and Xircuits. Other than that, to my knowledge none of the other ten codes got in. I found her trying via the shoutbox and sent her the possible codes. Basically, I mixed up which code was which in each browser I had open, so she had to try four codes to find the correct one (SORRY!) I'm uncertain as to which type of badges she bought, but that's not important.

We had 15 codes running for 8 badges, 3 just need preview night, 3 were first timers and wanted all days and 2 wanted Thursday, Friday & Saturday.  The rest of my friends had gotten the days they wanted in Returning Reg. We were able to get the 3 PN and the 3 first timers everything but the 2 other badges we just got Thursday. We are quite happy with what we were able to get. Now it is just to book flights etc.

My group did excellent...  we got everyone a badge but sadly a lot of my PN only did not hit.  I was running 15 codes to help the group and got to get 9 badges for people.

We even got to help our other new group so was pretty awesome

There's so much more you can do there :D

Thursday is the best offsite day.  The locals are still working so it's light.  Saturday is crazy.  I hunker down at comic-con on Saturday.

I got nothing as usual.  Being locked out of open reg is one of my comic-con traditions.

My wife, son, and I got badges in Pre-Reg, so for Open we were looking to 1) upgrade my son's badge from Sun & Thurs to 4-day, 2) help friends get a badge 3) help group people get badges.  In Pre-Reg we had four devices up and running and none of them hit: I got 4-Day w/PN from a group member, and my wife & teenage son got Sun & Thurs from a friend of my wife who got lucky.  For Open Reg. we had 6 codes up-and-running.  One of them hit pretty early, and we were able to update my son's badge to 4-Day, then help my good buddy and his teenage son get Sunday badges (which is all they wanted/need).  Later in the sale one of the group members got open and was able to purchase a badge for a good friend of my wife's.
By all accounts, my family/friends did well w/Open Reg.  Watching our group spread sheet 'light up' during Sat. morning it seemed like our group also did incredibly well in general between Open & Pre Registration: IIRC EVERYONE in the group that wanted 4-Day got that (not necessarily PN, of course, but everyone who wanted Saturday got Saturday), and near the end of the sale, when it got down to Sunday only, there were more than a few people who were posting in the chat "I'm in, does anyone need a Sunday badge" and helped people not on the list (like my wife's good friend).

After Pre-Reg, thinks weren't looking great in my mind for Open Registration, but things seemed to work well for our buying group & another buying group that got EVERYONE in their group badges wanted and then were helping other groups pretty quickly in the buying process.  The Luck of the Random Draw is crazy, and every year after Comic-Con concludes Sunday evening I resign myself to the fact that I may've experienced my last Comic-Con.
2019 will be my 20th Comic-Con, and so far the odds have seemingly been in our favor

I had an external group that consisted of about 23 people total. Everyone got badges in some capacity, but only 6 got PN. My wife and I logged in only to help people as we already had 4 days from returning registration. Neither of us got through. In fact, of all our group, only 4 of us got through, but that was enough to accommodate everyone, fortunately.

I just wish that I had the chance to help some more friends. I felt helpless and useless watching that blue circle spin for over an hour and seeing those "_____ is running low" messages. I stayed logged in until the bitter end and got the "All badges for Comic-Con 2019 have been sold" message. Such an empty, futile feeling.

I read an article online stating that 6.11% of people that attempt to get SDCC badges actually get through. In my group, that number was 5.75%.
