Die-hard fans know comics are no trivial matter. They aren't just picture books for children and geeky adults. Comics have a long history of addressing complex issues, from science lab accidents to ethics, moral issues and social justice. Join IDW Publishing and the Fleet Science Center for a four-part event series for adults 21+ that will look at the art, science and technology featured in some of our favorite comics.

How do artists create the artwork? How do writers develop the stories?

Are they communicating realistic scientific concepts?

Could they even be predicting what's to come in science and technology?

Comic book artists, writers and local scientists will give short talks, followed by open discussion, addressing the creative and scientific sides of comics. Enjoy local brews and stimulating discussion with comic book creators and fans! Events will be held at the San Diego Comic Art Gallery in Liberty Station on select Friday nights. Come to one or all!

Location: San Diego Comic Art Gallery, 2765 Truxtun Road, Barracks 3, Liberty Station, San Diego, CA 92106

Cost: $15 per event. Tickets include two beers from a local brewery and one comic book from IDW. NOTE: 21+ ONLY! IDs will be checked at the door.

Very cool. I have to admit I am curious to hear how My Little Pony intersects with Neuroscience.

I found a book once: "The science of the X-Men" where it goes into detail on how their powers work.  It's pretty darn cool.  :)

I have a "Science of the X-Men" book that I found years ago.  It's pretty interesting how they go in depth how Kitty's phasing, etc works.

I have to say, I have bought tickets for 2 of these and always end up not going b/c it's Friday evening and I'm so tired from the work week that when I get home I just don't have it in me to rush back out to make these. It sucks to have wasted money like that, but now I know myself LOL

1) I LOVE that IDW is so active in our (San Diego) community!  Their headquarters is at Liberty Station, above the SD Comic Art Gallery.  They do this sort of thing when it fits my schedule (last year they had a similar series that they did at local pubs: a beer/science/comics thing) and they're always fascinating!  I highly recommend

2) Kevin Eastman lives in San Diego (close to me, actually) & goes to our martial arts studio.  He's a really nice guy, loves talking to fans, and frequently makes appearances in town when he's not on the road (you can see a mock-up of his office at the Comic Arts Gallery)

3) The local brewery is likely Stone Brewery, which has a brewery at Liberty Station.  It's one of my favorite local breweries, so bonus points to SD Comic Art Gallery

4) The Fleet Science Center is great in its own right.  They did an awesome exhibit not too long ago detailing the history of video games and the gaming culture, where they had dozens of video games: from old school consoles like original Play Station & Nintendo, to new consoles, as well as a ton of old school cabinet games.  They even did a late-night session where they stayed open until midnight or after midnight (and they serve beer at the concessions, so parents tagging along with their kids could have their own brand of fun).

I guess in summary, this is great all-around!  And I can't recommend enough that everyone check out the SD Comic Art Gallery when they're in town
