Title: Panel Predictions
Post by: rabbitwarren on October 31, 2017, 05:52:30 AM
Ok, given returning reg is out of the way, it's not too early to guess what may show up in terms of movies.

Being a non-D23/Non-Celebration year, I'm guessing we'll see panels for Venom and Aquaman.

Being a non-D23/Non-Celebration year, I'm guessing we'll see panels for Venom and Aquaman.
Here are studios' release slates of SDCCI-esque films that would be released around the time of SDCCI promotion effectiveness.  This isn't comprehensive, but just my guesses on what studios COULD potentially want to bring to promote at Comic-Con 2018

* Captain Marvel & Avengers 4 (I suspect they're holding off on a name announcement until post-INFINITY WAR because it will give away a spoiler or plot point to INFINITY WAR); also Spidey sequel and potentially announcement on what all of the 'untitled' films on the slate for Phase 4.  2018 will be Marvel Studio's 10th Anniversary of IRON MAN so they could go all-out and celebrate the end of their venture that started with Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, and Cap since it seems plausible that at least a few of those characters will be finished w/INFINITY WAR or AVENGERS 4
* for DC we'll potentially have AQUAMAN, SHAZAAM, and WW2
* maybe a HAN SOLO panel?  That movie will potentially need a lot of love and massaging for the fans after an obviously very troubled production.  I'd say this is a very outside possibility though given Disney's history of not caring much about SDCCI as a promotion tool for their films
*WB might have: TEEN TITANS GO movie; LEGO MOVIE 2; maybe FANTASTIC BEASTS 2 (is that in production yet? it's slated for a Nov. 18 release but I haven't heard anything about production of this film recently); maybe GODZILLA 2
* Fox might have: THE PREDATOR (anytime we can get Shane Black in Hall H is fun times & this is an Aug. 2018 release so SDCCI 2018 would be PERFECT promotional time for this); THE DARKEST MINDS, a sci-fi YA property; maybe DARK PHOENIX
* Sony: maybe EQUALIZER 2; GOOSEBUMPS
* Universal: they might do something to hype the 25th Anniversary of JURASSIC PARK (they're already planning a celebration in 2018 in the spring, so maybe SDCCI is too late for that); also on their upcoming slate is SCARFACE remake; HALLOWEEN 'sequel' (the Danny McBride co-written film that is reportedly a sequel to the original film, ignoring the myriad of sequels and goofy continuity); DR. SEUSS' THE GRINCH

Obviously the usual TV stuff from past couple of years seemingly highly likely.  And SDCCI/studios have seemingly shifted more towards TV programming than film, so who knows.
PLANET OF THE APES and 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY will both be celebrating 50th Anniversaries so there might be cool smaller panels to celebrate those genre-defining masterpieces.

In regards to DC's Shazam, they announced Zachary Levi will star.  It goes into production in February.  I suppose they might have enough to present for the con.

Definitely. I will always point to Marvel, who was shooting to first CAP film for only a few days, screening an edited scene at SDCCI.

Unless Disney decides to push the release (which, despite Ron Howard's reshoots having finished only a few weeks ago, they've seemed reluctant to do), Solo will have been out for a month and a half by the time SDCC happens. So, despite really hoping for a Star Wars presence in Hall H, I'd be fairly stunned if we got a Solo panel (or any sort of Star Wars movie panel, since Episode 9 will still be very early in production and they haven't officially confirmed any spinoffs post-Solo).

I'm hoping Game of Thrones since it's the last season but also I feel like filming may go into the summer, unless the cast takes a break for SDCC

Talking about future panels, i use to try check them out but seeing how things are more of a pain to get in any unless u try to go to smaller ones unlike hall h or ballroom 20 lol. i was told sometimes people drop or toss freebie tickets for fulfillment room but how often does that happen lol. is it worth trying to find freebies from panels like finding change or just be aware by chance find toss in trash or a recycle bin ol. cause i noticed people this past con left behind posters or tv guide stuff on recycle bins more cause not really want lol.

This has been in the back of my mind for a few months and might motivate me to do Hall H again this year.  I skipped last year because I'm not much of a Thor or Spider-man person. But Captain Marvel and Avengers? Good lord I need to be there.

I'm starting to doubt that Star Wars will ever be back at SDCC.  It's skipped two years now. only one of which has the D23 excuse.  I'm starting to think that was a one time thing.

As far as TV goes, since Star Trek and The Orville have both been renewed, i'm betting they both show up.  And Doctor Who with the new Doctor.  Not sure what other shows are for sure renewed yet.

I agree.  It was exciting a few years back, especially when they returned for Star Wars Day (Friday used to always be Star Wars day at Comic-Con, especially during the prequel panel days and thereafter for awhile) but perhaps no more.
Also, I just remembered that HAN SOLO release date has not changed yet from the May 25, 2018 date.  It seems highly likely that date will shift to December giving news/rumors that Ron Howard reshot the majority of the film.  Disney might want/need to create good will/buzz for a film fraught with behind the scenes problems that were covered fairly extensively in the press.  Having the cast & Howard in Hall H showing a sizzle reel of some sort and getting the crowd to go NUTS might help Disney sell the movie.
Or maybe anyone will go see a Han Solo SW film and Disney doesn't need to drop a dime on extra promotion, IDK.

It seems Star Wars in general seems to be lowering their presence at SDCC. Their original booth, or at least the one they had for a decade or so, felt much more grandiose than the current booth they have.  (Anyone remember the year they had like 20 bikini Leias posing in front of a life-sized Jabba?) I would not be surprised at all if they eventually pull out of SDCC altogether, or leave just a token small booth.

Nah; there is FAR too much merch to sell for them to bail - especially with another decade of SW movies down the pipe after Ep. IX

Yea, anyone who can afford to loose a little bank to promote anything will have stuff for sale. i saw where the funko booth was and then saw vendors saling them as well, but guessing those who hit up the main booth are ones who stockpile for their own collect or to resale later. so there are so many possible panels to promote anything in this pop culture as they keep calling since cons now promote or show stuff from tv, movies, etc. there is so much traffic for the 4 and half days of traffic panels will get traffic some how even if it just press or some random people they will promote anything within limits or topic. alot is possible if u are more aware who or what will be there by chance.

I'm hoping that since Zach Levi is now with DC, they will fund Nerd HQ next year. It would be a great opportunity for them to take over some of the panels. They wouldn't have to compete with Marvel in Hall H or pay for those extras in Hall H.

As far as Sar Wars goes, remember in 2016 Celebration was in London the weekend before SDCC, in 2017 D23 was the weekend before.  We won’t get SW in 2018, but whether or not we get a panel in 2019 will likely depend on timing of D23 and Celebration.
Sony has stopped doing SDCC.  So forget Venom, Equalizer, or Goosebumps.
Legendary seems to be opting for NYCC over SDCC.
I’m thinking it wll just be WB, Marvel, Fox, and one random one like Paramount or Dreamworks.
Netflix will probably have stuff to promote too.

Oh boy YES.  This would be exciting.  Stranger Things season 3 and whatever Defenders installment they're on at that point.  I'm looking at a list of upcoming MCU stuff though and they don't have anything listed officially.  I swear Daredevil season 3 was a certainty though.
Title: Re: Panel Predictions
Post by: sefton42 on November 21, 2017, 12:37:56 PM
It depends on timing.  The Netflix Marvel stuff usually has a panel at NYCC too, so it all depends on when the shows are going to be released.

Now here's a thought -- given the underwhelming box office performances of Justice League and Blade Runner, does WB continue with its Hall H presence?
Title: Re: Panel Predictions
Post by: cabler30 on November 21, 2017, 12:49:06 PM
I guess any studio can leave tv and movie fans high and dry and have no panels at any con, but can also have panels from show with cast and any posters or whatever give aways promoting the show in any way possible. anything is possible for the most part, but just gotta wait and see how it goes when they give some idea what shows will be having panels or offsite setups for anyone to check out during the con. i know this past SDCC event i was like inside fort he most part cause it was like my first time back in years and had some idea how things have or had change by reading alot and seeing happen while at the con lol. so for next year i will have better plan and adjust as days fly by lol.

They'd presumably want to hype up Wonder Woman 2.  Maybe they'll do JUST a Wonder Woman panel?  Though it'll be two cons before the film release (Nov 2019) so it could be too early.  Ditching Hall H could be a possibility, but I'd miss those wrap around screens :(

I can see Jason Mamoa being a draw even if JL underperformed.  Lots of hype around him in this part.

With Disney shifting their Marvel & SW stuff off of Netflix for their own streaming service, I don't know if any new seasons of Marvel shows that aren't currently already in production will be on Netflix

Very good point. I would think they'd at least list what they plan on producing, though.  But maybe they just put a hold on all of it for the time being.

So im guessing as u say that Disney doing their own stream service and Disney has rights to Marvel in ways, then guessing they wont have any Marvel shows on Netflix no more when they start premiere new seasons of ea show or am i wrong.

I honestly don't know, it depends on the deal Netflix initially cut w/Disney/Marvel.  I don't know if Netflix would own the rights to produce shows w/the characters they've already produced and Disney/Marvel will create new series or what (for example, obviously Fox can produce X-Men as long as they want...until Disney buys them, of course); or maybe Netflix only got the rights for explicitly numbers of series' and maybe now they're contract is fulfilled post-Defenders & Punisher and Disney can pick up the pieces/do what they want.  I don't know if Netflix owns the rights to the content they've already produced or if Disney can do whatever they want with them (like when Disney bought Lucasfilm and canceled 'Clone Wars' and all other SW projects in development so Disney 100% owned all SW product being produced).

We'll see

I have read stuff in past where studios skip cons by chance if wanna save and just push out trailers or really wanna share alot at a con which we know will get posted online somewhere so they dont go to every con since so many cons happen now days it hard to go to all and just wait for the media to plug it online and watch it online.

This is true, especially if a studio doesn't necessarily have the "right" property to sell (a comic-con appropriate genre film that could really use some extra hype to boost its profile).  It's odd because some studios feel they've invested in Comic-Con and haven't seen a good return, but more often than not that's because either a) the panel had the misfortune of being right before/after a panel that stole all the hype (like SCOTT PILGRIM happening before EXPENDABLES, where all the hype was about the goofy 80's action stars reunion) or b) the movie was just not good (like the AMAZING SPIDER-MAN films).

IMO besides WB, and likely Marvel, it's sort of a guessing game as to what studio will bring what.

Times have changed so much now, that u gotta wait in line to get into the major panels now lol. i know they give out freebies after the panel at times of stuff u may or may not want seeing how some just trade or sell it off later lol. so i wait to find stuff sitting around by chance that happend by chance last year so scored some freebies since i try be aware of stuff at anytime. and know panels are recorded and posted on youtube sometime after they are done and edited if need any. but have learned from what i have read or seen videos that not grab everything since it can weigh u down over time and only grab or keep what u want so u can save space and less weight later.

Now that New Mutants is being delayed I think there's a strong chance for a panel.

Hoping for a Venom panel and with Michael Jaii White's twitter post a Black Dynamite 2 panel would be nice, though the movie may be out before then.

With Game of Thrones and Stranger Things both taking a year off it'll be interesting what takes their spots if they skip out. Though Stranger Things only had the one panel last year anyways.

More Neflix panels would be nice though.

Maybe an Alita Battle Angel  and Teen Titans Go screening
Meg would be awesome - such a cool cast
Almost certainly Small Foot, Godzilla, Fantastic Beasts, and maybe Minecraft to lead off WB panel before DC movies
I don't think it will be there but Holmes and Watson would be AMAZING
Mortal Engines seems like a great fit
Hellboy
Ad Astra really fits and would bring an amazing cast to Hall H
Chaos Walking

Random speculation, IDW is publishing a Jim Starlin Artifact Edition this year, hoping for a SDCC version and some Starlin panels.

In terms of anniversaries, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep is 50 years old, also the start of Dragonriders of Pern. Plus 2001: A Space Odyssey (film and book.)

What else ...

Black Lightning, Happy.

Freeform marvel shows? Cloak & Dagger, New Warriors.

Would love to see a panel for I Kill Giants, not certain when the wide release is supposed to be, trailer looks great.

So many comic related tv series in development: Concrete, Deadly Class, Locke and Key, Dreadstar, Trees, Five Ghosts, CHEW, etc etc.

It always a guessing game when we or anyone knows of any projections in the pipeline being done or created for tv or movie. not knowing what stage they are at in production is another factor so a panel is possible for anything to where it can be just talking about with a q and a or a panel with talking , q and a , and by chance a traiiler any if at all. just gotta wait for any news and check schedule later for who is gonna be where and then go and check and see what they have ready for event.

Could be:  VENOM opens in Oct. so SDCCI 18 would be in that timeframe. They brought the other Spidey films so that’s maybe make sense. I think movie studios are legit afraid of battling Marvel & WB for press hype and that’s part of the reason from movie studios’ declining panel participation.
But we’ll see

I know it's probably way to early in preproduction to have anything to show but an official announcement for the Scorsese Joker origin movie would be awesome, especially now that it looks like they've got Joaquin Phoenix attached! I'm one of the few that loved Jared Leto's Joker but I am all aboard the hype train for this one!

I agree with Leto's Joker.  He was the menacing Joker on screen, IMO.  I think if Phoenix does officially sign he would be INTENSE (in a great way, with a different 'take' than previous actors)!  Remember, WB typically has a huge Sat. am panel, and in the past they've put actors on stage in front of a title card with zero shooting completed.  WB seems to like to hype projects pretty far out (DC properties, at least), so it's not out of the realm of possibility.
Also, the thought of Marty S. at Comic-Con gives me goosebumps!!  I'd love to see him talk a Joker/crime genre film with Hall H!  I had the insane privilege of seeing him and Ebert doing a career-esque retrospect in the late 1990's and watching him talk film is really a treat: that guy forgot more about film in the time its taken me to write this post than most of us mortals will ever know!  It would be a gift from the Comic-Con gods to get him even speaking for a little bit about the Joker project (and of course, I would hope that if they already have him in San Diego doing a one-on-one type of panel would also be part of the day).
This is my own personal pipe dream right now, though.  Having seen Spielberg, Coppla & Lucas at Comic-Con over the years, it would be fun to have another 1970s movie-making icon at Comic-Com

Marvel is my only draw to Hall H, but i've only attempted once and didn't make it (last year) as the swag is always available to buy, panels online posted later....but i would love the feeling of seeing, loki come out on stage in his costume..

And especially with the madness of last years hall h disaster, it makes me want to stay even farther away...

Adult swim panels over in indigo were fun tho, sat their all day and just laughed my ass off in the A/C

They will be done filming and Zac Levi is already an SDCC staple.

Obviously, would love to have a big Marvel panel to celebrate the 10 years since the beginning w/Iron Man & the (what is sure to be) great success of Infinity War. I’d love it if they did that and also showed footage/previews of Captain Marvel & Avengers 4. Maybe a title announcement for Avengers 4 if they don’t do it sometime right after Infinity War comes out. Could see this being at least somewhat likely since this is a non-D23 year.

As much as I’d love to see Star Wars come back, I think it’s a long shot for a few reasons First, Solo is still being released in May, so that will be out already. Second, even though they’ll have started shooting episode IX, don’t think they’d bring anything from it since it’s still a year and a half out from release date. Last, since hey are still a year and a half from the release of IX and there’s a D23 next year, feel like they’ll save any Star Wars stuff for that.

On the TV side, I’d Love to see Game of Thrones, but idk how the timing will work for them. They’ll probably have a lot of stuff filmed, but possibly still be finishing filming. This could make it more difficult since rhey’d Have to pause production for some cast to fly in, but it could make it somewhat easier since most of the cast would be together and they could fly them in together more easily. Also, since they’ve announced that the last season won’t premiere until 2019, but we don’t know WHEN in 2019, this also makes it difficult to call. If it’s going to premiere in April like it did for all but last season, and there are only 6 episodes, it would be over before SDCC 2019, which might make them more likely to try to squeeze a farewell panel in this year. However, if it’s going to have a summer 2019 release, it could be timed so that the finale airs the Sunday that SDCC ends which would be awesome and they could have a panel on Friday like usual and some kind of series finale watch party/panel Sunday night in 2019.

Would also love to see Stranger Things, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (Providing it gets renewed), whichever of the Defenders have upcoming seasons, and Riverdale.

Since i dont do panels much do to all the line hassles, i can try check out smaller ones before or after a job and get other stuff done i wanna check out first. i have read some panels are posted on utube so can try check that after con for any new stuff.

Not sure what panels for marvel they gona have till it posted later, but know Venom out like in october mite have stuff to push that. for anything else its possible but again maybe too soon. all depends on what is done and what is allowed to be shared besides what get posted on line by sites and fans of what they see by chance filming at time.

So untill schedule is posted later for what is planned, u can try to make ur own plans but dont get too bummed out cause might be some surprises they try have for comic con. studios always wanna build excitement so mite be shocked what u get to see before anyone else by chance. knowing there is only so much time for every panel, they do try to squeeze iin anything they wanna and can tell u at time.

So try what till schedule is online then note all u wanna try check out and hope they dont overlap anything.

I hope Shadowhunters comes back this year. I had to miss their NYCC panel because of a press obligation, and I love their panels.

Also Voltron! I would love to see as much of the voice cast is possible. There were only three at NYCC and two at last year's SDCC panel.

I will have to look for that one. I love voice actor panels, and live readings even more. It’s pretty much a guarantee that there will be a Teen Titans Go movie panel or at least a show panel. (Maybe a screening? Release date is July 27.) We skipped last year, but usually attend their panels. Always a lot of fun.

Yea, i dont watch many voice acters do readings or on panels alot but when i do try listen for the characters voice and always wonder if it hurts them adjust voice when they do the shows any. i remember reading mike judge did beavis and butthead years back and he mentioned how it can strain ur voice or throat if their voice is kinda weird or not close to ur own voice really.

Not necessarily a prediction, but I'm really hoping Nickelodeon is going to have a panel for the Invader Zim movie that's supposed to air some time later this year.  There's been no news about it for over a year, so SDCC might just be the perfect place.

I am predicting another Young Justice panel, maybe with a bit more information, and I'm hoping that those who attend the panel get some kind of voucher for 20%-50% off the first few months of the DC streaming service.

I have a feeling they won't do a farewell panel this early for GOT. Besides all the GOT panels each year recap the season that just ended prior to the panel. Think it's safe to say next year will be the farewell panel.

If like to see Shameless come back with a panel as I never went the panel they had years ago.

I'm quite excited for the announcement of Bill and Ted 3. I looked into this possibility: The movie rights are owned by MGM, who brought Stargate SG1 just last year for a panel for it's 20th anniversary. With that said, it's not far-fetched to speculate that MGM could present a Bill and Ted panel.

For movies, MGM apparently distributes through WB, Sony, and Paramount.  If the movie's with WB, then there could possibly be a panel.  If it's with any of the other two, highly, highly unlikely.

I even trying to plan in ways, but till i see schedule as to who be in artist alley, small press, and all it kinda hard to plan right now. cause u might be told whoever be at con, but then might change for any reason. so best to wait and just note when u can later.

So far seen stuff about thundercats roar and can guess if u saw original toon that u may not like the new version. it might appeal to kids, but those who used to watch series years back may not like the new stuff. and for she-ra, not sure cause seen no news of it yet.

I grew up on i guess alot different toons as a kid and some they have tried to reboot dont always go as they expect. but will give a chance once they are able to give a clip or trailer later. cause some reboots i have seen just cant replace original or they more for new generation at anytime.

A while back I went to a Futurama panel where they read the script for the come-back episode.  It was a lot of fun.  I think table readings as part of the movie/TV show process are fascinating, and that's what this felt like.  They even had a comic-book made of the 'script' that they passed out to the audience for us to follow along w/the visuals. I don't think there were any weird voices from that cast, though (but that was a while back and I'm old and my memory is fuzzy and I'm old)

H. Jon Benjamin frequently gets in character at Cons.  At SDCC he slipped out for the Q&A and then they put a projecting of Archer on the screen and answering the questions in real time.

When i saw the panel for teen titans go by chance on utube, i noticed the voice and was wow. i seen the toon so have some idea of the voice so it cool to hear them say stuff as the character and then can connect who is what character at time. just gotta wait for schedule like everyone else lol. then note what i wanna check out and do what i can before or after a job. i wonder if their throat sore by chance or if it easy for them to adjust. i remember reading or saw video that mike judge did some or all voices for the beavis and butthead toon and it like strained his voice or was sore after a time cause ea character was different in ways. so it cool to see and hear them say stuff in character, but i wonder if ever their throat gets sore by chance.

Apparently Matt Groening has a new series on Netflix that comes out in August.  Since he usually brings the Simpsons, I would not be surprised to see this one promoted as well.  Could be interesting.

According to reports, “Disenchantment” takes place in a medieval kingdom. Mr. Groening has said that “‘Disenchantment’ will be about life and death, love and sex, and how to keep laughing in a world full of suffering and idiots, despite what the elders and wizards and other jerks tell you.”

Oh yes...I adore it already.  Bring on the SDCC panel!
