Sign-ups for the Comic-Con 2018 Volunteer Interest List are now open. To add your name to the list, simply log in to your Comic-Con Member ID account, select the “Volunteering” tab, and click on the link to the Interest List. Being on the Interest List does not guarantee that you will get into the volunteer program, but it does gives you an opportunity to apply.  Don’t delay, sign up today - space is limited and it fills up fast!

Once you have added your name to the Interest List, you will be notified when online volunteer registration opens at a later date.

Here’s how volunteer registration works:

Comic-Con 2018 online volunteer registration will only be open to those volunteers who completed assignments in 2017 (the Priority List) and/or have been added to the Comic-Con 2018 Interest List.  Everyone on the Priority and Interest Lists will get an email notifying them of the date and time that online volunteer registration will be available to them. Registration is done through the Comic-Con Member ID system. The Priority List will have a chance to register first and will have a 10-day window in which they are guaranteed to get into the 2018 volunteer program.

After Priority List registration is over, volunteer registration will open up to the Interest List on a first come, first served basis until the program limit has been reached. Once the volunteer program has reached capacity, it will close and there will be no further opportunities to register to volunteer for Comic-Con 2018. Comic-Con volunteer registration will not be open to the general public at any time. You must be on the Priority List or Interest List to receive information about online volunteer registration.

If you are not on the Priority List or the Interest List, another volunteer opportunity you might want to check out is WonderCon Anaheim from March 23 - March 25, 2018. An announcement regarding the opening of online volunteer registration for WonderCon Anaheim will appear on the WonderCon Anaheim “Volunteers” page and on our social media sites in early 2018.  Watch for it!

We thank ALL of our volunteers, past, present and future, for their help and enthusiasm in making Comic-Con International and WonderCon Anaheim great experiences for all!

I have that green check mark for 2018. :) One less thing to worry about, until signing up again and the two sales. Lol

So... I tried to sign up my nephew (Who will be 16 in January) as a volunteer, but when I try to sign him up, I get this message:
"We're sorry, but you must be at least 16 years old as of June 30, 2018 to volunteer for Comic-Con International. We appreciate your interest in volunteering and hope you will try again when you meet the minimum age requirement."
All his info is up to date, and yes, even his birthdate:  JANUARY 2002
I already sent an E-mail regarding this issue, but I don't know if he'll get a chance, CC is too busy and I don't know if they even respond E-mails at this point.

 :(

If I don't succeed, can his mom take him as a child with her?

Wow is right...

Maybe they got their quota of interest a lot sooner than they expected.

Much shorter. According to last year's thread, volunteer interest list opened Nov 15, and was observed as full on November 29 (it may have been full before then). That's almost two weeks.

Forum housekeeping: I added a calendar link for the closed date for archival purposes. I also set this topic as sticky, and set the 2017 thread as non-sticky.

Ah, I'm so excited. I had to miss this year because I moved to a different country. But I'm coming back just in time for SDCC! Hopefully I can volunteer again.

I was super sad I missed this, but then I kept reading that page saying it's closed. If we volunteered in 2017 we don't need to register on the interest list right? We are already on the priority list. So I didn't miss anything. Tell me I have it right.

Correct

If you did a shift in 2017, then yes, you don't need to register on the interest list.

You meant SDCC 2017? Did you give your "c" card to your supervisor at the end of your shift? Did you Skip a shift this year?

Yes my C card was taken at the end of the shift. My mom also had an issue last year and we spoke to the head of volunteering and she said that we both would have priority volunteering but when i checked our member ids only my mom had returning volunteering but we both successfully completed our shifts. :( :( :(

I find that they reply pretty quickly. I had a similar issue a few years back and Sue Lord got back to me and took care of my issue within a day.

If u volunteered at SDCC this past con, then they will email u when to check for priority volunteer reg and hope u got email saying all got sorted on stuff u needed to get fixed.  they still getting other stuff sorted for other badges and have not said anything about return reg badges or open reg incase u try get a reg and volunteer. i just check the forum by topic and most times others give any answers possible so u not alone and lost at whats going on.

CCI continues to move much more swiftly...I like it!

"Priority volunteer registration for Comic-Con 2018 will begin at 10:00 AM Pacific Daylight Time (PDT) on Monday, October 30, 2017. Priority volunteer registration is for PRIORITY VOLUNTEERS only (those who completed at least one assignment during Comic-Con 2017 or were pre-approved by the Volunteer Department).

Priority volunteer registration will close on Friday, November 10, 2017."

I just have one more question. I'm a priority volunteer, and quoting the email
"You are guaranteed admission to our Comic-Con 2018 volunteer program if you register prior to the deadline."
Does this mean that I can register ANYTIME after Monday October 30, and before November 10 and still have a spot? It's just to be clear. I don't want to mess this up

There is no hurry to regester. as long as you register before the cut off you're good

Was anyone else who should be eligible, not listed as eligible?

I would have sworn I was listed as eligible after con
yet i am not currently listed as eligible.... & yes, i completed a shift in good standing- ( i even sweated!)

did you get an idea about what happened? why you were overlooked?
I think the same thing might have happened to me all tho, i could have sworn i was listed as eligible ....

Well for me I we both had late night volunteer shifts. My Card was turned in but I never really got clarification about why I wasn't given priority but my mom was. I think I was just overlooked or my C card wasn't turned in. I was never listed as eligible for priority vol. Reg but I should have been. I ended up emailing Sue Lord (as we had an extensive conversation with her during the convention)  with the time and name of the panel i was working and she changed my status to priority volunteer reg. I hope this helps.

oh, yes, the email has been sent hrs ago--
thanks tory
that's my feeling, is that given all the confusion going on the first day & being a last min pre-show volunteer- somehow my c card just got over looked- I'm not worried I just am hoping to get this cleared up and still be a volunteer.

I also have press so it's more of a secondary thing for me- giving back & seeing how it works. But bottom line- i did work hard & did a good job last year for my shift-

Reminder:
Some of you in this thread may have just participated in returning ("pre-") registration for Comic-Con 2018, and I hope it went well!  However, there's still much to be done.  Don't forget that priority (a.k.a. "returning") volunteer registration begins Monday, October 30th, at 10:00 AM PDT.

You have until Friday, November 10th, to register as a priority volunteer, and as long as you log in and fill out the volunteer registration form in your Member ID account before that, you should be fine.  ^__^d

Hi All,
I have a friend that has been a volunteer for many years running now, but would like to also try to get badges during Open Reg.

If she registers as a volunteer today, will that negate her ability to participate in Open Reg?

Thanks!

Ok, so if she gets Open Reg badges, she can just decide not to volunteer when the time comes. I'll let her know.

Thanks!

Yeah!!!  Done.  I had to do it twice though.  The first time I waited a few mins for the confirmation email and for my status to change online.  Nothing.  So I did it again and this time everything happened instantly.  Got the email and when I refreshed the site, I was registered.

If she gets a badge, and doesn't volunteer, she may not be eligible for priority volunteering registration the following year.  I do both.  I think it only requires you do one shift to stay on the priority list.

I was wondering about that, so that's very good to know. I'll pass on the info.

The requirement is to complete one shift in good standing.
I've only ever done one shift

Exactly. You can volunteer as little or as much as you want. I volunteered half the days and use the off days for offsites.

On my shifts, there was always one person who had badges for all the days and were volunteering one shift just to stay in the priority volunteer registration. Since it guarantees that you can go to comic con every year. I think it's the only way to guarantee it.

This was within the vol. acceptance documentation

Quote
We DO NOT give out assignments for the days of the show before the convention. When you check in onsite, we will give you a badge and an assignment at that time. You may volunteer any or all days of the show. We do not need to know ahead of time what days you plan to volunteer. Just be sure to check in at the Volunteer Check-in/Scheduling Area when you first arrive at the convention. By receiving this confirmation, you are guaranteed to get an assignment on the days you choose to volunteer.

Last year was my first time as well and was lucky enough to be able to do same job all days so didnt have to be retrained for a new job ea day if it were to happen. i saw some of the different jobs and tried to choose but lucky got a pretty easy one even though had to deal with traffic but with staff around in charge they was able to keep workers at ease as traffic had attitude basically over miscommunication cause not always sure what to say at times. the con is like a mad house kinda when u have so many and everyone has a different mission to get stuff but had those who just tried enjoy event and were more understanding in ways.

I don't think they do. They didn't send a reminder for reg. On Friday so I doubt they'd do it for volunteering

All signed up!
I didn't get Preview Night this year during pre-reg, and will probably not bother trying to get it during Open Reg. I may just try to volunteer on Preview Night instead, to keep my name in the pool.
Last year I had Preview Night, but got really lucky and scored a 2-5 shift on Wednesday so I could just go to PN afterwards. I can't count on that kind of luck again.

I dont know how many volunteers they have each year but guessing they get more every year seeinghard or a pain it is to get a reg badge. preview night as i have read is like a short nite so i didnt check for that option and knowing how i am able to get downtown for the con it runs too late so would be a pain to get home after a shift. so i just do 4 days if possible and days just fly by as they did for me this first time i tried it and was always like busy somehow. hope to try to check out the offsites more next year depends on what they are able to get since some events bailed and so they had to fill with new events and stuff which as cool.

Registration for those on the Volunteer Interest List will begin at 10:00 AM Pacific Standard Time on November 16, 2017. Registration will be limited on a first-come, first-served basis. Not everyone on the Interest List will have an opportunity to volunteer.

Not my find-someone on one of the Facebook groups posted about it.

To register as a volunteer for Comic-Con 2018 you must be on either the Volunteer Priority List or Interest List. Please log into your Comic-Con Member ID, select the “Volunteering” tab to check your current volunteer status, and follow the appropriate instructions below.

Priority List:

Comic-Con 2018 Priority Volunteer registration is now closed. Priority Volunteer registration was only be open to those volunteers who completed assignments in 2017 (the Priority List). Priority List Volunteers who have not yet signed up to volunteer at Comic-Con 2018, but still want to, will have another chance when we open volunteer registration to the Interest List at a later date (see below). However, there is no guarantee that a Priority Volunteer will get into the program. All applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

Interest List:

If you are currently on the Volunteer Interest List, you will receive an email when Interest List registration opens. Registration will be on a first come, first served basis until the program limit has been reached.

I signed up as a volunteer this morning because I wanted to attend Preview Night. But once I got the welcome letter, I found out otherwise. It's obviously too late now, but FYI for next year:

"Due to capacity limits at the San Diego Convention Center, Daily Volunteers may not attend Preview Night unless they purchased an attendee badge that includes Preview Night."

I sent an email to ask if I could withdraw as a volunteer. I hope they'll allow it. I'd still like to volunteer some time in the future, but just not this year. I already have badges for all the days I want, except for that Preview Night.

If you're registered, doesn't mean you have to check in for a shift. You can simply don't show up.
But if you're trying to give a spot for someone, you're a good guy, but I don't think one person would make a difference IMHO

I wonder if SDCC saying they do not need to know if you want to cancel your involvement, has become somewhat of a problem.

This past SDCC (2017), I got a pre-con shift.  I remember that at the time, pre-con shifts were in short supply and some who checked the box, did not get a pre-con assignment.  But...when I went to do my pre-con shift, there were some volunteers who said they had gotten an email that not enough pre-con volunteers had showed up, and they needed more at the last minute.

During the con, one of the non-daily volunteers told me that they were short hundreds of volunteers, and were scrambling, and that they were working longer hours than usual.

I know I sure would appreciate someone letting me know if they couldn't show up for a shift.

I have learned that my first time volunteer last year i heared they say u can use reg badge on day u got and just check in ea day early to volunteer room for days u can volunteer and just turn in papers u got from priorty or interest list to get a job for the day. since i know it a pain to get a badge at sale, i just check in for a job for 3 hrs and enjoy the con and events around the job before or after i do assigned task. if anything else im guessing u get many more tips or help over time leading up to the con next year.

I have to think the fact that it's still open is due to cci not offering PV nite to all volunteers- there's a lot less incentive to work a shift if folks don't get into PV nite.

Yeah, agreed. It used to fill up in minutes. It's also super inconvenient to volunteer. While yes, technically it's just a 3 hour commitment each day, you have to hike all the way over there, wait in a line, get an assignment for a time you might not want. Hike back to be early for your shift. Work your shift. Hike back to check out and get another assignment. It really does eat a lot of your day and prevents you from doing a lot of things you might want to do, depending how you do Con. I volunteer one shift every year b/c it's just something I like to do, but I wouldn't want to do it every day, for sure.

Come to think of it, there was considerably more time involved than the 3 hour shift, even though I had a pre-con shift.  Somehow my paperwork was not entered into the system (along with hundreds of others, I believe), and we had to keep coming back to see if we were in the system so we could get our free day.  Not fun.

Perhaps some tweaking of the system is in order to make it more attractive.  It would be great to be able to get  more than one day's shift at a time.  I thought that is the way they did it some years back. Anybody remember?  I truly thought you could be assigned to an area and work that area throughout the convention.

This past con was my first year, and took note of what was possible and not. i got lucky to do same job everyday by chance so not gotta be retrained since wasnt able to choose a job but just the hrs i was able to do at time. guessing since i checked back sometime after shift and they was not busy that they understood how things can be and i said i dont mind doing same job and time so was less hassles for them at time so guess made it easier on me in a way.

<2016: minutes
2016: 2 hours
2017: 4 days
2018: 11 days and counting

The Volunteer Bubble is deflating. I don't buy that it's due to no PN.
Open Reg is next, but probably still not for a few years at least.

Well considering I didn't think volunteering got me into PV night anyways, it's no loss for me. ;)

Seriously, didn't they say last year that volunteers only got into PV night if they paid for PV night?

For me it was all pretty smooth.  I think a lot depends on timing.  When I went to register the line was short.  Yes, there was a problem with the computer and they had to manually process my pre-con shift.  Otherwise, it was pretty smooth sailing.  I never really stood in a line.  When you show up for your shift, go into the short line and you get right through.  If you are signing up for a shift, wait until 6-7 and there is no line.  Also, all my shifts let me go early.  Some only by a few minutes, some by a bigger margin.  There was always more volunteers than they had jobs.  So when a new batch showed up instead of having way too many people standing around, they would let us go.

I didn't experience any of that.  I always got exactly the time I wanted for all my shifts.  I actually like volunteering.  It makes me feel like I'm part of something other than just a member of an audience.

I guess everyone has a view on volunteering, i made sure it was like priority while i was there since it was my ticket to be inside and did all 4 days since had the days off by chance so no day wasted lol. i was able to do same job everyday by chance so not gotta be retrained and time so was easier to do what can around it and not be lost as to what time i was to check in and all. i think one of the days i was able to check out like mins early since they had alot help and at times just cruized around with a higher staff trying to find a post to help or relieve at time, so i dont think i had to stand at a post very long since time flew by and while working u wasnt worried about time just try to focus on what u doing and stay busy then get to roam around after get what u can or do what u can before the con closed for nite.

Well considering I didn't think volunteering got me into PV night anyways, it's no loss for me. ;)

Seriously, didn't they say last year that volunteers only got into PV night if they paid for PV night?

Yes. That began with (at least) the 2016 show...but many people apparently didn't get the memo.

I was given the option to do preview nite as volunteer but skipped the option, they said none about having a badge for it though.

This was on the first page of the volunteer acceptance packet, in bold. I am also pretty sure it was also mentioned with similar emphasis on the website then, although that's long gone.

Due to capacity limits at the San Diego Convention Center, Daily Volunteers
may not attend Preview Night unless they purchase an attendee badge that
includes Preview Night.

Ok, i see what u mean. and knowing it a short nite, not sure why they would need so many if any for a few hrs and save the help for the following few days of the con.

jumping in without reading everything... if you volunteer for a shift on pv day- you'll get a badge for one of the other days of your choice

As Alyssa said, there is no option of actually getting into PN for volunteering during that day any more. That changed years ago, it used to be you had three options if you worked PN. The first two options were if you worked "Preview Day" before the even actually started. You could choose to go to PN, get another day free, or if you actually worked during PN, you'd get two days for free instead of one. This last option usually was working registration at Town & Country in the evening.

As someone who has been with SDCC for over well over a decade now, PN is still my favorite experience of the con. Yes it's still crazy, but you do have a little breathing room.

At least with last year, you didn't miss out on much. It was the worst shirt I've gotten at SDCC, since I started volunteering. It was just so plain and boring I thought. Maybe this year's will be better.

I got the shirt last year and wasnt fussy since was first time so like souvenior going to con and helping to go everyday. not sure how they decide the design but yea be cool if was more creative then before. i guess they had better volunteer shirts in the past but i dont know last year was first time lol. so guess gotta wait and see. saw the shirts for the con and thought they was creative but price a bit hi so maybe get one this year if want bad enough to spend so much for a shirt. wonder if they ever sold shirts cheaper so not have so much back stock kinda or do they just donate or whatever after the con? that would be cool if had any old ones to buy that never sold so u can enjoy and say u gone but not that year but have gone in past. saw a badge recent showed i had chance go a saturday back in early 2k when u had write ur name on sticker then they added it to a badge for u lol , those was the days before the event got crazy and hard to get badges.

I thought you two would like to see this. Though I'm sure any previous volunteer wouldn't mind. I have more years worth of volunteer shirts, but since I moved, these are the only ones I have with me currently. The 2012 shirt is the only one I've actually opened and worn. It was the year I met my best friend at SDCC (we both happened to be volunteering at the same time/thing together and met there) Beyond that, the others are in order from 2013 to last year's 2017 shirt.

As may have mentioned before, if they got a back stock of tops cause no one wanted or cared for the design that they can still sale any im guessing to make back any money it cost to have them made incase anyone wanted one. i just remember i had mentioned it for the reg con shirts i think and not volunteer ones i think. but still if any they can try sale at the merch room if they ever think to or wanted to if any.

If they were to ever bring back the Steampunk Toucan shirt, I would totally buy it. That year I was so busy, I didn't get a chance to. If someone requests it, I can post pics of past SDCC shirts as well. (Not the volunteer, but the regular shirts that people buy.) I have a collection of them as well, all still sealed also.

I have given feedback on their site about having more durable bags to pass out, but not about a sale of any past shirts they may have to regain any bank to use towards operations of cons and future needs. not sure how much feedback they actually read or have anyone who checks for notes for their meetings any. i guess anything possible any year con is in san diego.

As for more durable bags, that's probably up to WB, since they're the sponsors of the bags. I don't know how long you've been attending SDCC, but if you remember 2012 (with the capes) that was the BEST bag I've gotten in the last decade. They were thick and built well. Since then, ever SDCC, I get my bags torn. Last year, due to the pins, I couldn't even get a replacement bag since they had none left. But in general, I go through multiple bags.

The pins they gave with the bags, some collected and some tossed so if chance u was able to find any in trash if u wanted them that bad at time. i was lucky to get a pin i wanted at time as well. but this idk, and if wb is one who does the bags i hope they make better bags or may be some trading for new or replacement and they run out again this year by chance. this year gotta learn and remember not to collect so much heavy stuff lol cause was kinda sore since hang pack on one side most times. i would trade maybe for a bag that is broke but has image of show i want if possible lol.

I know they ask u if u wanted to at time u checkd in a while back, but guessing they send u email if they gave u a spot to work before the event. so guessing u have to wait for mail for any updates since they still busy with WonderCon news and all.

It'll be a ways away. Its usually done a few weeks before the con. They don't give you a spot immediately. They contact you again to figure out availability and it goes from there.

Speaking of bags, my Shark Week bag broke yesterday. I used it as a shopping bag. First the shoulder strap snapped and then when I switched over to the handles, one of them broke. Now I have to switch over to the angel wings bag.

The capes/durable bags were actually from 2013 (and those were indeed awesome)...but in 2012 the bag quality was nearly as bad as last year.

I just got a email from the volunteer department for a Recruitment Event.
I wasn't expecting it and kind of cheered me up after some bad weeks of hotelpocalypse and a very picky roommates...
The mail says:
Quote
You are receiving this invitation due to your excellent Daily Volunteer ratings in 2017 or because you have expressed an interest in becoming a Department Volunteer. Some departments are looking in adding volunteers to their onsite volunteer staff. There is no guarantee you will be accepted by a department, but this is a chance to meet department staff and interview for a Department Volunteer position if you wish. Note that being a Department Volunteer is a bigger commitment and they generally do longer assignments. They are badged and scheduled by their specific department rather than the Volunteer Department.

I don't remember checking on something of interested in becoming a department volunteer... I'd rather think it was my "work" during 2017, my very first year

Which group is that? I'm interested in reading more about what it would be like. From the description, it didn't sound like it would necessarily be more time. It sounded like it would be more focused. Instead of volunteering with possibly a different department everyday, each shift would be with the same department. But I don't know anything about it. Is anyone already doing it that can chime in?

I took "bigger commitment" to mean longer time shifts--I think I remember one of my volunteer supervisors saying her shifts were longer, too--but I guess it could mean a bigger commitment to the department?

I in a group on fb for volunteers, and it is like a short interview process they do either online or at a place im guessing. from what i read if u become head of a department for a certain job then it more hrs and not able to really enjoy the con as if u was just pt for day where u roam around till u gotta check in to get ready for shift and all. as i can tell it may not be the kinda job for everyone, but i guess they send u email offering a spot if u have volunteered for enough days or years i guess. i am good doing pt cause then i can enjoy the con before and after the job.

The volunteer supervisors are full time jobs but they are paid positions from what I understand. I talked to a couple of them and they told me they were paid. They said it was tough to sneak out for an hour or so during the day just to run around like crazy on the floor trying to get everything they wanted.

Like another poster, 2017 was my first year volunteering. The email said it was sent out because of either high daily reviews for volunteer performance or I had expressed interest in the position. I guess I'm the former since I don't recall the latter.

Do you have a link to that FB group? I hope it's an open group since I don't FB.

I hope someone here can chime in. Someone here must have some experience in it.

On another note, any one have a guesstimate of when pre-con emails might come out. Checking my email from last year, it was sometime in June. I don't want to miss it since I get so much email. I want to be on high alert for it.

It depends on what dept you are in as they are all run differently so some may have to do some shifts before con or have meetings during or before preview night. Some have mandatory days they have to volunteer leaving free days to roam or you have to volunteer everyday. Hours vary. I've gotten one as long as 8-10 hours. If you have the opportunity to do it go for it. Once your in you just get an email every year to sign up don't really have to stress about registration. There's other small perks here and there also.  ;D

Yea, as said above. once u volunteer and all goes good and right, as far as i know u only gotta volunteer for the day u wanna be able to roam around con that is to go and out at anytime before and after job. i think last year some or some random people only did it for a day cause had a badge for other days. i had no reg badge and had the days off and saved so i basically just volunteered all 4 days possible. i just hope if possible i can do same job i am good at doing since was able to keep same job all 4 days last year by chance. im guessing there are some jobs u may not like after u do it and after some u like and try do again ea day. i was not promised that i be able to do same one ea day, i just checkd back before leaving for nite and it worked out that i was able to do same ea day so not be retrained. so u can try and ask, but there is no promise or guarantee things are gonna go ur way all the time. i just know the heat can be a pain and came ready, but was lucky enough i had a job working inside for the 3 hrs.

Yeah, it's basically the room where people go pick up their free giveaway for attending a panel. For example people that attended panels at Hall H get a ticket at the end and they come to the premium room to redeem it for whatever their giving away. So, all you do is be in a table and as people come in you get to yell "Game of thrones!" or "Marvel!" so they go to you, it's a big room with lots of tables. Once they go to you they'll give you the ticket and you hand them their freebie and see them walk out of there happy lol

Side note.... gotta be careful because last year someone was handing out fake tickets for freebies to people who didn't attend the panel. So just make sure they have the right ticket :)

Yes. They gave people a talk about if any ticket looks suspicious to call over someone higher up the chain to verify the ticket. Also, you have to hand over all your stuff and they'll lock it up during the shift.

I can tell things have changed on how they give out swag after a panel, cause when i use to see any we just stood inline to walk out and was given the swag or freebie as u left the room. so now u get a ticket after panel and as u said they go to a fullfillment or premuim room to get the freebies there instead.

To confirm, you're referring to the Programming Premiums room located inside the Manchester Grand Hyatt hotel :)

I can't talk about how or why I know. But your post is incorrect. It's simply that giving out tickets is much easier to do, than giving out actual swag items. It's always been about preferring to give out tickets. But sometimes some studios prefer the swag be given than the ticket for redemption later. Nothing has actually changed.

I can see how things have changed and how they prefer to give a ticket or other to redeem later. it makes easier then reaching or holding a box and making sure no one tries to grab more then 1 for ea badge holder at time. i by chance still have stuff stored away from the years i went lol cause never know when u go again. seen a video how sometimes the ticket is droped or lost and otehrs find and redeem for a free swag that the panel was running, i lookd at random and saw none on ground except just random ads lol.

If only....."reaching and holding a box" sounds so much easier than what really goes on. Trust me. I have insider knowledge on this. Fights, yelling, extra security, and many other NEGATIVE things have occurred. Tickets are just better. As for finding tickets, I've never done that. But I'm also one to baby my tickets. If I get one, I try and redeem it as soon as I can.

I've had people come up to me and tell me they lost their tickets and ask if they can still get the freebie... at that point I just send them to someone higher than me and let them decide... here comes trusting people in believing what they say it's really true.

I can imagine anyone who may try say stuff as if the staff hasnt heard the box of excuses so anyone can get something free even if didnt even go to panel. i can guess some have got lucky to give a excuse , and by chance get something at time so the hassle doesnt drag out too long really. i can see anyone come in and see what free if a ticket and then act like it got lost and say what panel after they look and see what they want most.

Does anyone know if you get to the con late on Friday, register, do your shift but when the shift ends the con is closed so you didn't get to enjoy any of Friday..would they give you a Saturday? badge since you already worked a shift but didn't do anything but work

You get a free badge for the day you worked. So if you work Friday, and the shift closes the con...well then there's not much else you can do. Think of it this way, if this were a possibility, why wouldn't everyone take advantage? Working Thursday or Friday to get a free badge for say Saturday (the most sought-after day?) This would open up Pandora's box to too many problems.

another question, let's say at the end of your shift on Friday you get scheduled for Saturday, would you badge work before your shift on saturday? or do you have to go every day at the volunteers desk to activate it?

I not sure exactly cause i tried to go back sometime after job and they had said i was too early, but u can ask them when u check at what time u able to check back so u not gotta check in early the next morning and just hang with the crowd till they open. i am guessing like an hour after shift, like if u do a 12-3p then u might be able check in around 4 or 5 but i just guessing. so ask as u are checking in for a job ea morning or nite and make note of it but if ever u forget by chance can always ask staff and they can help the best they can at time.

There's no point to that unless you are just doing one shift to keep your priority status.

Yes it does.  Your badge is active for the day you volunteer.  So you have say a 7pm shift, it would be valid that entire day before your shift.  It gets activated when you sign up for your shift, no need to go somewhere to get it activated that day.

To clarify for any other others who may be new to the forum and to volunteering in general, you have to check into your shift each day.  I suggest going to the Volunteer Department's HQ room at least 30 minutes or more prior to the start of our actual shift because, sometimes, especially for the late morning or early afternoon shifts, the shift check-in line can get very long and takes a while to process and scan people's shift cards.  Once you are checked in, a Volunteer Services staff member will escort you and anyone else on the same shift to your scheduled location for that shift.

You can usually go back to schedule your next volunteer shift on the following day after the end of your shift.  However, note that if you have one of those early morning shifts, they would usually ask people to come back no earlier than 1:00 pm (or 1:30 pm) to schedule their next shift for the following day.

Hope this helps and clarifies some things.  ^__^d

There is a period you have to wait to sign up for a new shift after your last shift.  I never paid attention since I would go sign up for a new shift right before the volunteer room closed for the day since I didn't want to stand in line.  In the middle of the day, that line can get pretty long.  Right before close, there is no line at all.

I remember one of the days i went back to check in for the next day and was pretty quick cause really not much a line and by chance was able do same job ea day since no need retrain so was totally cool. it does help alot to try check in when u can after ur shift , so then u not check in so early next day and can just hang outside with rest of craziness and be wowed by how many or how much traffic there is to start. i know like 1 or 2 days in row the trolley was like packed so had to wait cause could have walked to center but knew i be doing so after get to center so i just chilled and wait for next trolley to center since they have them more often during the con and other events do to so much traffic sometimes they try to do all they can to keep things going at anytime. so just off hand since was able to check in after shift before i left city , then i did so ea day to save time and sleep in longer lol.

That's awesome but be weary of this. Not everyone at the volunteer assignment desk will be that generous and give you the same assignment each day. Though as a disclaimer, I was in your shoes before, and the guy gave me the same assignment the entire con. Him and I became close friends since that day. He was actually a staffer for SDCC. He no longer is, which brings a tear to my eye since I've known him for so long, but anyways, the point is some will bend over backwards and hook you up with a great assignment. Others...may not.

Yea, i know what u  mean by some will be cool or nice about letting u do same job so not gotta be retrained for any job. i guess as they say take with a grain of salt so to speak about what mite be possible but dont be shockd or mad if it not go as expected at time. all i can do is say what job i had done before and ask if possible to do same job again. i really not sure how many jobs there really are to do, since i have read variety of people have done a variety of jobs over the years they was able to do any at time. i can rant and rave of stuff i have read under different topics but guessing u have been told or read alot as well lol. so just gotta wait and see what happens later.

I can tell you that I personally, in my over a decade of going to SDCC, that I have alone worked 30-ish different jobs?  Some tough ones like carrying huge heavy boxes, some boring ones, like working with notecards behind the curtain at the registration desk (which is no longer there at the convention center), and then some super fun ones.

Im guessing over the years some jobs have changed or have been just replaced by other jobs they can have us do at time. guessing there are some cool jobs and then some real sucky ones lol depends on how u see it. as long as i dont gotta fry in sun so to speak im good. but as we have said, we been lucky enough to do the same job every day that we are cool with doing again so not be retrained and be stuck doing something we not wanna do cause they do ask what u can handle and try to assign u a job that u can handle at time. i will mention what i have done and hope they cool about letting me do same job at time. im like excited for con but at same time try be cool and collected and on same page incase something out of the blue happens and try help where u can at time.

A good friend of mine told me about their story of being a daily volunteer, frying out in the sun. I've been lucky, I have not had that job. Though there is a benefit to that job. I'm not going to comment on said benefit, most people should understand. If they don't, I don't want to put it into people's heads.

But as for you, I hope it keeps being lucky for you. I pretty much am set so I know where I will be at the con. I'm lucky in that aspect.

I understand that sometimes when u tell others some ideas or helpful tips, then those who u tell may think and expect it but be bummed out if it dont. al i can do is come ready for the day and see what i can do to try prevent from being stuck in sun for 3 hrs lol. i know the time goes fast, but i rather not take a chance if i can help it and get an inisde job for 3 hrs or so. during the time try find a post for the job i was doing, it like took awhile it felt like cause they try find those who had done their time and try place u at a spot for those who was done doing job at time. so it felt like i only had to do less then 3 but it was np cause i showed up and helped where u can and enjoy being inside and all. all i can do is hope all goes right and can stay inside again.

I have to say it was very difficult finding that room last year-- my first time looking for it.  My sister and I are ADA and it took us about an hour.  Now I know that the ADA folk will help with getting premiums and volunteer t-shirts.  Whew!  Thank you ADA folk!

So I went to the recruiting event today.  There were a lot of people there but I think they expected more.  About half the seats were filled on the first floor and no one was on the second.  There was a lot of pizza left over.  Someone took five full pies with them when they left.

It was cool in that it was like having a little comic-con experience early.  There was food, there were prizes and there were lines to stand in.  I had some good comic-con conversations while standing in line.

After some initial presentations by the department reps, it broke up into a job fair.  People stood in line to get interviewed if they chose.  No pressure.   They said you could interview with 1 or all 7 or none at all.  It was up to you.  There were 7 departments there.  I'm not sure if I have the names right or the exact roles.

1) Fan Experience - they manage the crowds for the sails pavilion for things like bag and badge pickup.
2) Volunteers - they manage the volunteers.
3) Exhibits - they manage the crowds for the exhibit floor.
4) Talent Relations Team - they work with the talent like guiding them around.
5) Line Management - they manage the crowds.
6) Front Room - they manage entry into the panels.
7) Artist Alley - they manage the artist alley.

Some of the departments are closely related such as Fan Experience/Talent Relations Team and Line Management/Front Room. The teams from those departments seemned to be co-mingled.

To address some of the questions people have asked here.

1) It varied from department to department but the time commitment is more.  I think most required shifts for at least 3 out of the 6 days of comic-con.  Each shift consisting of 4 to 12 hours.  4 hours per shift is not much more than the standard 3 hours volunteer shift and you get a badge good for all of comic-con.  12 hours per shift is on the other end of the spectrum.  Also many departments required at least one shift on Thurs, Fri and Sat.  One required 12 hour shifts on both Fri and Sat.

2) The shifts will be scheduled out.  As one dept rep said, you can't show up when you want and work a shift.  It'll all be planned out.

3) Whether you got an invite or not didn't seem to matter whether you've volunteered for 1 year or 10.  I met people from all over the range.  It seems to be based solely on how good your reviews were the previous year.

The interviews themselves varied greatly depending on the person.  Some were like what is your favorite thing at comic-con and what is your favorite movie.  Others were like interviewing for a real job.  They wanted to know job history and what experience and skills you can bring to the department.

All in all I think of these positions to be unpaid staff and not volunteer positions with all the associated expectations and responsibilities.

Similarly my mood went from it's comic-con fun to it's a work thing.  It's a great opportunity but I have had 3 dream jobs in 3 separate fields and when it turns into work, the dream dies.  So I'm not sure if it's for me.

Did anyone else go?

The pizza thing is pretty common for all meetings they really want to make sure everyone gets a slice just in case.  ;D

Yeah if you plan to do more than just walk the floor and see a little bit of the offsites becoming a department volunteer may not be for you. With the way lines are these days I haven't been to a panel that wasn't a short wait in a couple years because scheduling is hard on making plans.

Interesting.

How does one become one of the select general volunteers.

Usually do really well, score really high on your review at the end, go above and beyond, basically get noticed (for doing well at your assignment.)

I can see helping for a short time ea day, but having to do it all day like to where u cant just roam around before and after job and enjoy the event seems more like a job then volunteering. i mean volunteering is still like a job but beyond 3 hrs feels more like an actual job and depends on when u start the job ea day then half ur day is gone kinda cause u be working then u gotta try do what u can after and hope u still able to enjoy the event some how ea day. im sure it not for everyone, but hope those who wanna try for a job working for CCI, then cool and by chance some perks along the way as long as u dont expect it all the time then it can work out over time. i just happy i can still enjoy the event and still help for having a chance to be at event ea day possible.

Yep, everyone sees things differently. I was a daily volunteer, and yet worked the entire day/con with the same department. I didn't mind working the entire time. I had done SDCC for so many years, it didn't matter. But I agree, some will not be happy working more than the 3 hours. They want to work their exact 3 hours then be done with it.

I can see if done or gone to it so many years that it gets to be ssdd lol in a way to where u dont mind working the con as like a vacation job i guess. i guess some jobs u paid and others u not but u find ways to enjoy and by chance score some freebies along the way when u can at anytime.

It's all based on how well you are rated during your volunteer shifts. Whether it's your first year or your 20th, they invite based on ratings.

Yeah, I think a big factor is how often you've been to comic-con and how long you've volunteered.  I talked to someone who had only volunteered one year and he wasn't going to interview with anyone since it would take up too much time.  I talked to someone else who had volunteered for 10 years and he was excited for the opportunity to move up.  As he put it, he had walked around enough and was done with it.

I've suggested to people who can't get tickets that they should try volunteering.  Many have told me that they would have to take time off from work to go to comic-con, why would they want to take time off to work?

Personally, I enjoy volunteering.  It's just not something I do to get into comic-con.  Since I actually spend much of my time at the offsites.  In fact, one day last year the only time I spent at comic-con was to work my shift.  Before and after it, I did the offsites.  I enjoy helping out.  That alone is a reward for me.  I know many people don't feel this way.   When I volunteered at the Walking Dead Escape, I stayed the whole time.  I was generally the only one or one of the last 2 volunteers left.  Everyone else left a couple of hours earlier after staying just long enough to make their run.

I see what u mean, i have been to con years ago. now since i slowly i guess getting back into the whole event, reading and noticing the changes that i dont mind volunteer that now i just gotta make notes as to what i wanna try do most before and after a job. i was somewhat aware from what i read before i went to con so was prepared in ways. but seeing how people can get about freebies its like wow lol. safety first i say at anytime. some or all become vultures, so i try be happy what i get and can get at time. so this year i gonna try to split time between going in and then checking out offsites since can collect freebies at anytime lol. so have plan what need do first and then play by ear what to do after key goals are met or done if possible at time.

I really wanted to go the Volunteer Recruitment event to know what it is like, but well, life got in the way and TBH I'm not ready to volunteer (sort of) full time at the Con yet since this will be my second year attending and volunteering.
Perhaps in the years to come I'll make that commitment
Also, like [member=6586]chocolateshake[/member] said, I would have post-con blues by now... But the bright side is SDCC is less than 2 months away!

OK.  The next thing up is the chance to do a pre-con shift.  When do people think the email will get sent out.  I'm thinking it'll happen in about a month.  I need to decide when to go on high alert and keep an eye out for the email.  I get so many emails everyday that even with highlighting, I tend to not see emails for hours or days.  I also need to change my SDCC password from a super long random string to something short enough that I can remember and type on my phone just in case.

I just looked and I got a notification on the 6/26. But there were two waves last year.  Was 6/26 the first wave and 6/28 was the second?  Also, I can't remember and I can't find any evidence of it, but did we get a confirmation email right away after we signed up?  I got my bot up so that it sends me an sms every minute until I tell it to stop.  It would be awesome if it could just stop itself once it sees a confirmation email.

You can also pick which day you want to be your free day at any time.  You don't need to pick it in advance.  Although to maximize your time, you should decide the night before instead of possibly standing in line the day of and wasting precious CC minutes.

But that's the point.  To torment me until I sign up.  Otherwise I could miss it.  I might even have to record a special ring tone so that my phone says "PRE CON SHIFT!" when it gets that sms.  Is that carrying it too far?

Last year I got a pre con shift a couple days before the convention IIRC. I didn't get a response in the first wave but right before the con they decided they needed additional help.
It was very fortunate timing too (2-5) as I had preview night and at first was afraid it'd overlap.

This year I don't have PN so I am hoping for a pre-con shift. But if not, there will be plenty of other things to do.

I checked in last year on Wednesday and plan to do so again this year.  Unless I get an earlier pre-con shift and can check in even earlier.  The line and wait gets much longer once the con gets going full swing.  I'm here.  No reason not to take advantage of that fact and save precious comic-con minutes.

The volunteer email has info as well, especially the first page of the attachment.

I sometimes use my Profile history to see my posts, to avoid repeating myself in too many threads.

I also use the "Like" button on posts, too, as a quick comment!

When I said check in, I meant to pickup your volunteer badge.  On the day of your shift, you have to check in for your shift as normal before your shift.  I don't think of any time during comic-con as a wasted trip.  Before the con actually starts, I think it's fun to walk around gaslamp and watch them build the offsites.  A day before the Mr. Robot offsite opened, it was pretty barren in there.  It's amazing how much they get done so quickly.

From what i have read, they may have some but not many since a short nite before most traffic is thurs to sun. pn is like from 6-8 or 9 only. reading comments i think they mention they have some mon to wed doing variety of jobs, but most volunteer work is thurs to sun. i can only go by what i have read of comments but guessing some will clarify if any i not know about since only had chance to do so last year and do so again this year, so im like still a rookie i guess lol and just go by what i have been told or read.

You ask, and I shall post! PN used to be one of the busiest nights for volunteers.  Back then, registration took place at both the convention center and Town & Country hotel. So many volunteers were needed for T&C registration. In fact, if you worked PN at T&C (the standard 3 hour shift) they would give you 2, yes, 2 free days, instead of the normal 1. This also was the time when returning volunteers were allowed to attend PN. Anyways, now that we have the RFID badges and they're mostly shipped to your home, registration at T&C and subsequent high amount of volunteers are no longer needed.

Anyways, there are still some volunteers needed Preview Day (again Preview DAY that Wednesday) but usually by that evening, everything is done. There still may be the occasional volunteer needed to help with line management, but I haven't heard much of that in the past few years. Now staffers usually have a mandatory meeting for Preview Night. So they are required to attend that, but that's about the extent of it all.

I can see or mite be wrong but pre con shift is only wed i am guessing. and with it being a short nite then not sure how many volunteers they try have for the nite. it nice they let u do so ea day so u can enjoy the event while it is around all week and weekend. i was thinking maybe try come down when they start setting up the offsites, kinda like a pre con field trip so to speak. like watching a house being built but from a distance of course so not be yelled for safety and all. just ideas till i actually know i can do so at time lol.
I have done both Tues and Wednesday pre con shifts. I have stuffed and folded bags for the majority of my pre con shifts.

I wonder, but mite be a crazy idea and that is do u think they would ever try to have comic con be more days then what they do now? i mean it might help spread out the crowed some if was able to have it for more days then just a few. so was just a thought. some that may or may never happen for any reason im guessing.

They already have.  It's called WonderCon!

That's exactly what I was going to post.  They could expand WonderCon and make it a duplicate of comic-con.  Restrict attendees to only one and thus double the number of people that can attend.  Of course there are issues.  It's not cheap for a company to go to a trade show.  Especially those big booths and big offsites.  So I'm not sure if many companies will want to do it twice.  Although many already do it for multiple cons a year.  So it would just be one more.

I try to leave comments to help and sometimes i tend to repeat answers. and so i read and think and cool to get answers to what we think or inguire about at anytime. so if wondercon is to help extend the days, why is it Comic con has like more days then wondercon kinda? i try not to ask lame questions but i dont if anyone has ever asked this kinda stuff before. sorry , i tend to think and wonder about stuff too much sometimes. and try not waste space at the same time.

Tbh. Comic-Con barely seems to be able to fully staff current run of days.  The last WonderCon,  CCI even reopened the Volunteer shifts https://www.friendsofcc.com/forum/index.php?topic=9043.msg230981#msg230981

At the risk of sounding like an ass, I think you got super off topic and like maybe start a post in the general discussion thread? You seem to have a lot of thoughts and ideas but I'm trying to stay relevant and learn/answer questions about volunteering :)

This is one of the most common pre-con shifts that take place on Wednesday aka Preview Day. It didn't used to be, but when I walk around the convention center that day, that's about all I see. Volunteers folding the WB bags into quarters, hiding the front and the pin (based off of last year of course, since it was the first year they did that)

What were some of the other pre con shifts? This will be my first year volunteering and I want to do a pre con shifts so trying to get a good picture of what that would entail.

There are many various pre-con shifts. As stated above, folding the bags is one of them, handing out the bags is another job. Then there is on-site registration, moving boxes for different departments, ticket ripping into strips, information booth, and other random jobs with registration. These are just some. I don't know every single job, but these are a majority of them.

You can also work doing some form of line management.  Such as telling people where to go or working the doors to make sure people tap in and out.

Just to be safe, I would have the alert filter for anything that says "comic-con".  Also, it'll probably come out during business hours pacific time.  If it's early in the morning then that will be in the middle of the night for you.  If it's at 3pm here, that'll be early in the morning there.  So you might want to set something up that can wake you up.

I no longer do pre-con shifts, but suffice to say I enjoyed doing them more than anything else. In my past, I have worked multiple Tuesday and Wednesday shifts pre-con. I was also able to meet some friends that I still know today, well over a decade later. One year, and this only happened once, I worked Monday, Tuesday and I worked at Town and Country during Preview Night. That years Comic-Con, I was able to get badges for all four days without ever having had to work during the actual convention.  Obviously this is now no longer possible, but it is still an awesome memory of mine. As for all of you, good luck. Working a pre-con shift changed my life. I won’t delve into any specifics, but I hope it works out as great for you, as it has me.

I've mentioned "retrained" in this post, and I think before. And for anyone else reading this as well. These are really easy and fairly simple jobs. What "training" if there is any, really is only a matter of minutes. This is not as if we're talking a job in real life, where there will be hours of training.  Yes jobs differ, but I don't think you'll have a horrible time if you get a job you've never done before. You may actually get a job you love. Everyone is different. My first ever volunteer shift did not require any training, and it was a pretty boring job involving writing on note cards, but I didn't care. I just wanted to give back.  Eventually I found a volunteer job that I loved, but it's not always that easy. My lady friend got to work inside Hall H during a bunch of highly sought after panels. Prior to that, they wanted her to carry heavy boxes. Very much night and day.

I'm sorry.

I got my notification on 6/26 as well.  I don't know why I said 6/28.  Either it was a finger check, or I need glasses. ??? ???

I know why I said 6/28.  That's when I got my pre-con assignment.  Sorry for the misunderstanding.

I agree that the volunteer jobs are pretty simple.  Not much training if any required.  Instead of getting the same job over and over, I prefer to get a different job each time.  Just to see what they are all like.  Every job I've done, I don't think that training took more than 30 seconds.  Sometimes much less.

An umbrella is a good idea. I know someone who was stuck out in the sun for 3 hours straight.  It is never a guarantee as to what job you get. You may never get the same job, or you may get it every single day of the con. I think you'll be fine at the con, no matter what job you get.

I was so glad I brought a large floppy sunhat which was really light and I could fold it up! Also a good idea for general con-going since a lot of lines stretch into the sun :)

If I understood the tweets, these are for regular volunteers who have been upgraded to staff volunteers.  There was an interview event some weeks ago, where those who were invited got the opportunity to interview with various departments.

I wouldn't use the term "staff volunteers." You're a daily volunteer, and if you made it through the interview and got picked, you then become a staff member. I'm sure it's all semantics, but the badges to me are what matter. They distinctly say Staff and and not volunteer like they used to :) But tomato-tomahto. I do agree, congratulations to everyone who made it!

I mean, if you're not getting paid, IMO it's definitely fair to call you a volunteer. But I can see it would be confusing to refer to them that way if their badge says staff.

Absolutely. I wholeheartedly agree. To me why I differentiate, besides the actual title is that a volunteer means you volunteer. You're not denied a spot to work. Staffers have to be interviewed, have to have had a high score when they were a daily, and then be picked to become a staffer. That's why it's different, besides the lack of pay, which again I totally agree.

Officially they are called "departmental volunteers".  I think they are called that to differentiate them from the paid staff even though they do have staff badges.  I think of it as unpaid staff positions.

It can get confusing with volunteering.  At the last real Walking Dead Escape, some of the paid staff asked "Are you really just a volunteer?"  I said "Yes I am."  They responded "You should get paid for this."  I said "I do it for the glory..... and the t-shirt.  Mainly the t-shirt. ;)".

That sort of depends.

I'm a volunteer who also paid for an attendee badge for all days.  I'm not excluded from exclusives or autographs.  If there is a prohibition, I think it would only apply to volunteers who didn't pay for a badge for the day they are volunteering.

I was referring to people who volunteer for the whole con but yes I'm aware that all paid attendees have access.

If it's all online I don't see a way for nonpaying volunteers to participate since they sign up for a shift the day before or day of. Wonder con had the lottery signups a couple weeks beforehand.

Daily volunteers mainly do menial tasks in variety of areas. Basically anywhere they need bodies with little to no training and only have to commit time to the day/s they want to attend. Staff does more specialized stuff and who’ll only work on a certain area through con. They may require training or meetings outside con beforehand. The hours and commitment is longer compared to daily volunteers.

Wanted some clarification for working on preview night.

Can my friend get an assignment on site if he arrives an hour or so before preview night starts? Or is preview night something you had to request prior? He is not interested in attending preview night, just wants to work that day so he can get badge access to another day.

If he selected the option of a pre-con shift, CCI will send an email for all those who did that and then summit the hours you have available Monday, Tuesday and/or Wednesday.
Those shifts are scheduled by the department based on the availability mentioned and then they send emails if the person is selected for a shift one of those days. It is first come, first served, so not everyone get a pre-con shift, and your friend needs to summit his availability as soon as they get the email

Most of the pre-con shifts are actually during the day. Preview Night does not have as many volunteers as it used to have. Anyways, pre-con shifts go quick, so when he gets the email, he needs to sign-up ASAP.

you have to keep in mind that most of the staff are all volunteers. paid staff is very few in number. ultimately there is no real need to differentiate between staff and volunteer staff because paid or not there are a lot of essential personal. a organizational chart might give importance to some less important and less importance to some that are very essential. best to think of the departments as entire entities or better yet one big happy family. Everybody is good at some element of the dept they are in. old or new to the post. best to establish ranks at the beginning of the show for the current year. a lot of the posts are filled by the diehards. At least in my department people just seem to know their posts we are a groups that clicks really well. I suspect all the departments are like this to some extent.

Pre-con shift emails should be happening this week based on what happened last year.  Time to start sleeping with my phone instead of leaving it on the charger on the other side of the room.

Time to obsessively refresh my email just in case every 5 minutes. xD

So the portal for exclusives just opened and I am just a volunteer with no purchased badge.
When I log in says I'm eligible to participate in the lottery, so for those who were wondering if volunteers would be able to take part in the online lottery, it looks like the answer is YES!

I believe the portal for autograph signings will open on July 2nd!

Good luck to you all! :D

Last year I think it was closed by the time I got home to check my email, I think it was like a couple of hours.  Not sure when it closed.  It could have been anytime before that.  I wished we got an email confirmation right away so we can know whether we did it right.  I worry that I messed up typing my email address since I was in such a hurry.

I would submit right now and you will hear back from them (if selected) soon. If lucky, you will have enough time to plan ahead.

This morning it looks like the portal for pre-con shifts is still open.  It is 7:14am est where I am.  Last year I remember that one volunteer told me he had been assigned for just 1 pre-con shift but that that they underestimated the number of volunteers they needed and offered him an additional pre-con shift.  Maybe they are making sure to get enough for this year.

First time volunteering, sorta veteran attendee...

These emails people are getting are "pre-con" shifts? Meaning they can work before the con and get badges for their days? I was unaware that was a thing lol. I was afraid I missed something.

How does this work for people who just want to work a couple hours in the morning and then run off for the rest of the day? Do we just show up day-of and they assign you something? I know the barcodes are coming soon (10 days before con?)

If I remember correctly, after you're accepted as a volunteer, you're asked if you'll do a pre-con shift.  You may have missed that one.

However...

Yes, if you want to volunteer any other day/time, you just show up at volunteer registration, and you get assigned.

They might be waiting a little longer this year to see how things shape up.  Remember last year they had to send out two calls for pre-con shifts since something popped up after the first call.

So someone on twitter asked if anyone had gotten a pre-con shift assignment yet.  Then an hour later, they got a pre-con shift assignment email.  So the assignments seem to be going out.  Other people are chiming in and saying they got the email too.

Lucky! I was hoping for Wednesday 11am. I got Wednesday 8:30am which is fine too, just have to start driving down at 5am...

I submitted my form pretty much right away. Also, last year I initially got assigned a shift I didn't request but they fixed it the next day. Hopefully that happens for those who got shift mixups.

I don't know how they are scheduling things, but it could be they are picking the people who have limited availability first since people who have wide availability can be placed in many more slots.  So they are saving those people for when they run out of limited availability people.

You can have them at check in. The only thing more important is the registration code, but I think they can look up for you in the system too (this last one I'm not sure)

Hi your message brought to my attention that I never received an email/attachment with the Volunteer packet.  I did receive the pre-con assignment email and volunteer bar code email but neither have the CCI packet.  (I found the volunteer consent form from last year but it has 2017 plastered all over it...  Oh well, I'll just fill it out there.

I tried that  and it's still not there so I must have deleted the welcome email. I even tried the search option. All my previous welcome emails popped up but 2018.  :(

Thank you [member=2950]Karin[/member]  I was trying to figure that out.  I have not done a Monday.  I did a Tuesday when we worked with the tickets for drawings.  I am guessing it will have to do with getting bags and stuff together.  Or...maybe merchandise?  Hoping someone with more experience will chime in here.

Did you like your job?

Feel free to add anything if you'd like :D

My first job was putting together the bags for attendees an hour or two before the convention center opened up for preview night. I was ok with it, since it was my very first shift, and I was just happy to be at Comic-Con.  One of the perks was putting aside a bag for myself with the pin that I wanted.   :)

I haven't volunteered enough to be picky about assignments, so whatever they give me is fine.

1) [member=1]alyssa[/member], just saw you leave the Werewolf! Love the place. Have to hit it up every con.
2) I also have a 3 o’clock Monday volunteer shift. Earliest before this was a Tuesday. I’m excited!

Had that same shift last year as well and really liked it too. And yes, having your shift lead let you pick your bag/pin was super awesome.

My first pre-con shift, the year before, was a Tuesday and I was putting together packets of badges for studios. I seem to remember bundling Kevin Smith Crew badges or something along those lines.

My first year I was in line management. They just had me hold a sign directing people to the programming rooms. It was at 2pm so it was pretty hot standing outside but they actually put me inside the MGH. Other fellow volunteers weren't as lucky and had to be in the sun  :o time went slow since it wasn't a busy time.

Second year again line management but this time they sent me to hall H at 5pm saturday it was pretty crazy, some attendees don't listen to you and do whatever they want but it was ok time went by so fast since it was so busy.

Third year they sent me to the programming rooms at the MGH. This was the one I liked most. You basically get to hand out free stuff f to attendees. It was a busy time 6-9pm saturday so time went by quick! you can either sit or stand they have chairs for you.

I don't know what I will be doing this year but i sure hope for programming room :D

My first year I was in line management.

In one of my assignments, I specifically asked for line management.  The scheduler mentioned that it wasn't the most popular.  But I'm trying to do as many different jobs as I can.

Qq, about to volunteer tomorrow for the first time and saw this in my barcode email:

"Please print this barcode confirmation, as well as signed copies of the Policy and Safety Guidelines Agreement (p. 10 of the Volunteer Orientation Document (VOD), and the Volunteer Confirmation and Acknowledgement (p.12 of the VOD) to the Volunteer Department when you check in. Volunteers must bring a photo ID with birth date to pick up their badge."

Does anyone know what this VOD thing is? Is it something I can fill out there?

ETA: Found the doc, but do I have to print it out beforehand or will they have copies?

I did a preconvention volunteer shift Monday at 3:00 PM and they just looked at my ID and checked my name off a list since they said the system wasn't up yet.  They did not take any of my signed volunteer documents or barcode.  After our shift we were told to come back starting Wednesday when the system was up and running to turn in the documents and complete the process.

Did my pre-con shift today.  So much fun.  The time flew by.  I went to the Laika offsite again afterwards and they turned me away because they were closed.  Closed?  It's like 2pm I thought.  The guy said it was after 5pm.  I totally lost track of time.

It doesn't seem like there are enough volunteers this year.  Last year, every shift I did including the pre-con shift had too many volunteers.  Many people just stood around doing nothing since there wasn't space for them.  A couple of shifts, they let us out early since there were just too many volunteers.  Today was completely different.  About halfway through they had to move some us to another post because they were losing their shift of volunteers and there wasn't a replacement shift.  So they split my shift up to cover another post.  I talked to a few of the new departmental volunteers this year and they said they didn't go through the interview process.  They got an email about a month ago asking if they wanted to be departmental volunteers since they needed more.
Title: Re: SDCC 2018 Volunteering Thread

another reason for the seeming decrease in volunteers is a redistribution of time slots and being better organized in the use of the existing volunteers.

I worked a monday shift.... monday!!!-- there was at least 30 of us in my time slot. all of us were used. we did bags, books and lanyards. I don't remember as many shifts on a monday in years past.
second, all of the materials were there. we were never waiting for anything. compared to some shifts in the past, this year was one of the best, logistically.

My pre-con shift was yesterday. Start time was 1pm but due to some disorganization (and staffers at lunch) we didn’t actually do anything until after 1:30.  We had about 12 of us roping and putting up the cones for the Hall
H line behind the convention center (next to Joe’s Crab Shack and the basketball courts).  We also assembled the recycle “bins” out of cardboard.  None of this was difficult, just under the blazing sun. It didn’t take us very long, it probably would’ve been faster if we had more than one blade to cut the rope but we finished at 3 and they let us finish the shift early.

That's just stealing.  I also saw a couple of women taking some when I started my shift.  At the end of their shift, they starting digging through the pile for specific pins.  From reading this forum, I thought they were picking one to set aside like people posted.  Instead they both grabbed 3 each and walked away with them.

At the end of my shift, there was no mention about choosing a bag and pin to set aside as has been posted.  So I was wondering if it was common or not.  It seems not.

Please don't steal people.  I don't want comic-con to have to go into lock down mode for it's volunteers like it already has had to do in the premiums room.

You don't need to choose it until you want to use it, if you want to maximize the time you can have them activate it for the next day the night before.

I'm getting my friend on the list next year!
The time was early this year https://www.friendsofcc.com/forum/index.php?topic=8754.msg222624.msg#222624 so hopefully the same time this year. (It'll have it's own thread later!)

The first notice (to sign up on the Interest List) lasted a few days.  Second notice (about two months later), where you actually add your name and get accepted into the program, seemed to last under two weeks this year.

(And if, during the second notice, precon shift box was checked, a third notice gets sent out to select a volunteer job before PN.) Lastly, right before Comic-Con, a last notice with barcode registration arrives.

You're actually in with the second notice, where you submitted emergency contact info and get the volunteer packet emailed in a reply email.  And your Member ID will have a green checkmark!

I recommended a person on our return bus  with PN because never know.  He really got convinced when showing him this year's Volunteer T-shirt!
