Congrats! And just think, you never have to worry about hotel for SDCC again!
-
congrats! san diego is such an amazing city. im tempted to move their too.
-
Congrats! I'm very happy for you!
-
Congratulations on the move! And I have to say, Normal Heights is an absolutely great place name.
-
Congrats Alyssa! So glad you found a place
-
If I may suggest a coffee place, there are a lot of them among the various "heights". I like to go to Twiggs on Park as opposed to the one on Adams. It's cozier.
-
i'm pretty close to Dark Horse - yeah the name threw me 'cuz of the comic company. They've got a good cold brew but i'll try Twiggs- ;)
-
Congratulations on your move, Alyssa! My son came with me to SDCC this year and now is in love with San Diego. We came a few days early and got to relax and see some things. He will be envious of your move. Maybe in a couple of years, he will be out there too. :)
-
I am super jealous, too, but very happy for you. Ever since we started going to SDCC, I have dreamed of moving there. Actually, my mom reminded me that I used to talk about moving to California when I was a kid. I think there was a book I loved that was set in California (I don't remember what town).
Are you going to one of the regular Nerd Nite San Diego functions (or have you already)? I need to check out one of the Austin ones.
-
Welcome to sunny San Diego!
-
Congrats! I dream of moving to San Diego some day. Not just for the con, but love the weather and environment.
-
Hey, we could start a FoCC commune/coop. My brother lived in one for years in the Boston area. They called it the 'Big Top'.

I am going to nerd nites- and love them-
it's just interesting ideas and a when i get brave enough, I'll start taking to other folks ;)
they are looking for an assistant to run the show- i intend to see what that entails-
the lady that runs it is in Theatre- so yeah- we've got that in common LOL

Congratulations on the move! Your going to love it there! I lived there from 6 to 19. And still go visit family every year and stay a month or 2 at a time in the summer! Normal heights is a nice area. Enjoy the weather and everything there is to do there!
-
You should meet up with my younger brother and his fiancée. They live in Normal Heights and his fiancée also goes to Comic- Con.

I’m a native Manhattanite and I feel the same way. That’s why I left the East Coast a quarter century ago. No offense taken.

I wish I had the nerve to move. Just the thought of uprooting myself and family is nerve wracking.

Random thoughts on moving to San Diego after having been here couple of months
- The Sun is STRONG- it's not particularly hot just much stronger due to being much closer to the equator. Moving from the 44th paralel to the 33rd is significant
- i've got to shop around for gas. prices vary greatly, $3.33 to $4.99
- Even tho I'm not able to afford restaurants, the grocery stores non processed food is soooooo good
- When driving on the highway, I put my blinker on to change lanes- people let me in!!
- My car is dusty and dirty, I may actually have to take my car in for a wash. I've never brought my car into a car wash before- it's always rained
- it gets cold at night- i need a light weight down blanket
- Sunday Football starts before lunch
- I can fit an amazing amount of stuff into a 200 sq ft apt
-

In general Arco and small independents are the cheapest. USA is in the middle. Exxon and Mobile on top. Arco prices are pretty uniform where ever you are. Exxon prices can vary greatly even a couple of miles over. My closest Exxon is $3.89 and the next closest one is $3.49. Arco is $3.35 pretty much everywhere.

Make a foodie run to Tijuana. It's very close, distance wise it's a suburb of San Diego. If it wasn't for that pesky border coming back north it wouldn't be much more involved than going to Del Mar. Going south is no problem. Still plenty of people make the commute everyday. It's the busiest land border on Earth. Many Americans who work in San Diego live in Tijuana.
If anything, TJ is more cosmopolitan than SD. The best Haitian food in Southern California is in TJ. You can't get Central American food period in SD, you can get it in TJ. There's a large Asian presence in TJ. That's why there are direct flights from TJ airport to China and not from SD. If flying into and out of San Diego, always check the TJ airport too. You don't even need to go to Mexico to use it. It's the world's only cross border airport. There's a tech corridor in TJ that's very similar to what Silicon Valley was 20 years ago. Sony moved out of SD and down to TJ. For decades, anything Sony in the US was done in Rancho Bernardo. Samsung has it's North American campus in TJ. That's why there are so many Koreans in SD/TJ and why the last old style NTSC analog TV broadcast is in Korean. From SD you can barely pick it up with a good antenna.
The food there is varied, cheap and tasty. If for no other reason, you can get a real Caesar Salad where it was invented.

thx for the arco tip- I'll keep my eyes out for one close to me. yeah i think it was an exxon station at $4.99/gal-- I do not understand the gas pricing. I'm use to prices that variry at most $0.25 - maybe 0.50 if it's close to a highway or something-

oh that sounds good- I haven't screwed up the courage to cross the boarder yet- I have to see if i can find someone to go with the first time - i'm up for trying it. I'm always up to trying new food!
oh another one for the list;
OTA tv broadcast is surprisingly good. especially paired with a hulu/amazon prime/netflix
who knew about the Comet network....LOL.... Godzilla marathons! [/list]

going to a Costco for me is like an alcoholic in AA going into a bar. I am not strong enough in my resolve yet- I'll come out with a years supply of paper towels with no where to put them! LOL remember 200 sq feet apartment!
but i hear u abt the gas pricing at costco, it's just not worth the buying cost of the costco card

If you have any nice friends who do have a Costco card, maybe they'd be willing to buy you a Costco Cash Card. You can use it at the gas pump without having a membership card.

Yeah, I moved here with my wife summer of 1999 almost specifically for the amazing weather! We were watching Super Bowl 99 while snowed in (in Columbus, OH) and a friend of ours was living in SD AOL IM'ing pics of him in flip flops on a patio. We decided then to move and haven't regret it since! Everything you list above are some of the reasons I absolutely love living here. FWIW the Balboa Park annual pass is an amazing deal if you like all the art museums (note: Comic-Con museum will NOT be a part of the Balboa Park pass when it opens up in a few years) and a great way to spend an afternoon. IIRC Normal Heights is pretty darn close to Balboa Park (also the different gardens at Balboa Park are a great place to relax with a book/write/make art/etc).
Good rule of thumb:
* ALWAYS have your sun glasses during the day; ALWAYS have a light jacket/sweatshirt in the evening. *
Are you in the flight path for the airport or are you just outside it? I'd love to move in that neck of the woods, or near Liberty Station but IDK if I could handle planes every few minutes flying overhead that close
-
I wish I had the nerve to move. Just the thought of uprooting myself and family is nerve wracking.
When my wife & I moved we were still pretty young (I was 22 and my wife was...um...a little older than me) and we just figured "if it works out we'll stay, if not we'll move back." She left a good job and had zero prospects and I left a crappy job for a good albeit really part time one. It all worked out WAY for the better, but we both had little to lose moving.

Also, at least at the Costco's near me, the lines are SUPER long always. The prices are good but I'll pay a little more cents per gallon to not wait in a long line for gas (#FirstWorldProblems)
-
yeah- everytime i've driven past cosco gas the line was silly long. there's a few stations 2 or so miles for 3.35 ish- i can live with that- it's 3.55 in my neighborhood - so it's a $2 savings/tank to go there- $2 is about 25 miles in my prius Thanks for the gasbuddy link [member=2163]AzT[/member]
also for the sunglasses & jkt suggestion- my glasses change so i forget i've got them on ;)
and the classes i take are in computer labs /bleaping freezing/ LOL Yeah, layers are the only way to go!
well, i've officially joined the OTA for my TV viewing. I've got a OTA tivo with lifetime subscription coming just in time for the new tv season. now to trick it out with a really big hdd /hehehe/
if anyone wants to buy a Roamio 6 tuner Tivo for cable with a 6tb hdd and lifetime let me know ;)
-
I go to Costco every other day. Even so, I rarely get gas at Costco. It's simply not that cheap. Definitely not cheap enough to tolerate the long line. Overall, it's the same price as Arco. Sometimes cheaper, sometimes more expensive. Much shorter lines at Arco.
For my neighborhood gas prices today are $3.29 at a small independent, $3.35 at Arco and $4.49 at Chevron. I don't know why people go to Chevron but they do.
I don't know how far it is away from you Alyssa, but Food4less on University has cheap gas. Food4less is the discount brand for Kroger. It's a Kroger where you have to bag your own groceries. The one on University has a big gas station.
-
Person's at the 15 & El Chahon seems to be my go to gas station- I think it was $3.39 for cash last week
I have to add to my list of ODD things i did not understand before moving to SD
Not having to look for a back up hotel room for sdcc
i find myself reading all the hotel posts & checking the pricing out for hotel rooms....

It kinda force of habit checking stuff even if u are closer now to the convention center to be checking stuff as if u was still far away lol. never hurts to get some ideas if u still wanted to get a room closer if u didnt wanna have to deal with traffic unless u can get trolley to convention center from a trolley stop close by even.

I can't believe I missed this! Welcome to San Diego living!
One thing I will say, you never stop looking at back-ups to be downtown haha, at least I've found so.

I always have to laugh when we travel to somewhere like the Southwest, rent a car, and they warn you that if you don't return the car with a full tank they will charge you this inflated rate per gallon. And that inflated rate is cheaper than what it costs in California.
-
i've learned to always pay attention to the gas prices when i land as i'm being driven to the car rental place... or i suppose i can now use gas buddy before buying the tank of gas at the car rental place
-
Those gas prices are unreal but I’m not surprised with Rex Tillerson having been the former Secretary of State and a previous CEO for Exxon. So glad I have a Leaf now.

For us, we always get our San Diego gas at the Costco by Ikea...the lines are always long, but I think they move along at a decent speed so I never feel like I'm waiting forever.

Yeah, like everything else you just need to be diligent (and maybe patient) and find the best price in your neck of the woods. I made the awful error last week where I waited WAY too long to get gas, found myself in the situation of "I have to get gas NOW" and went to, unfortunately, the most expensive gas station in my neighborhood - easily $.50 a gallon more than other places. I was kicking myself for DAYS over that

Me too! I've only been getting $5 at a time for the last couple of weeks since the price of oil has dropped so much. I don't want to fill up only to find the next day that gas dropped. But then I end up buying gas for 30 cents more than I could because I need it right then. With oil at it's current price, unleaded should be closer to $3.30 and not $3.70.
-
Oh wow...I had no clue about this either! So does the person just show their Costco gift card when entering?
Pretty much. It's right there in the terms. The reasoning is that you have to be able to get into a Costco to use that gift card. Some people don't have memberships and have their friends buy them Costco cash cards so they can shop at Costco without paying the membership fee.
There are things that you never have to have a membership or Costco cash card to buy. The pharmacy, the food court, vision/hearing centers, alcohol and cigarettes are available to everyone without a membership.
-
Hopefully the gas tax will be repealed in the upcoming election, which will lower the California gas prices overnight.
-

Not by much. The gas tax up for repeal is 12 cents. Good news at the pump today though. The lower oil prices are working it's way through the system. A local gas station dropped prices by 4 cents today.

It’s a Cooper’s hawk with a broken wing
-
Sad little hawk. :(
I tried helping out what I thought was an injured hawk a few years ago in San Francisco. I was walking by my neighbor's lawn and thought it was a really realistic looking lawn ornament. Then it blinked. Another passerby and I thought it was injured since it was just standing there staring at us. So we put a recycle bin over it to protect it and called the humane society. They asked us if it looked hurt. It didn't. So they sad it was probably just resting and that we should take the bin off. We did. It turned it's head and stared at both of us and then flew away.
-
lol,
it was pretty obvious that there was a broken wing situation- s/he tried to fly but couldn't
