I must admit my heart jumped when I saw the official tweet from CCI, especially when there was mention of “Return Registration “.   :P. Now I am debating on whether or not I should  start freeing up my Saturdays from now on, ...y’know, just in case.

Well, heart skipped a beat when I saw the announcement as I panicked for a few seconds. Sent out my google form to collect information from my group and we're starting this again (as if we ever stopped.)

I'm infinitely stressed with work right now, so of course CCI had to add this on top. Of course, I'm happy to get it over earlier but I'm going to cry from the stress.

OK, here's a question, to qualify for the Senior rate, is it 60 years old before the Con, or 60 years old before registration date?

For juniors, it is the age on the day of the badge sale (since your Member ID account uses that to determine eligibility). I suspect that it's the same for seniors.

So long as the browser you use can auto-refresh at the correct rate (which FF and Chrome do on phones) it should work. Though I don't know about doing multiple browsers on the same phone for each code you may have. You may want multiple devices instead that are data/wifi capable.

So how reliable is a mobile browser if you have a solid internet connection? For instance, what happens if you go to another app? Does the connection break? What about switching to another tab within the browser? What if your phone locks?

The outages are mostly in northern california. There aren't any planned in SD county. Also, Expo logic which runs the registration system is based in Pennsylvania. So it shouldn't affect it.

And it's in uber rural areas of NoCA: not urban or industrial

I'm a bit nervous about the outages. The current outage map has my home less than 0.5 miles from the outage border.

Worst comes to worst, I'll go to a cafe, or I'll have my trusted friend handle all the registration (he tends to have better luck anyway)

COMIC-CON INTERNATIONAL REGISTRATION UPDATE The Case Of The Registration Codes

https://www.comic-con.org/toucan/case-of-registration-codes

Quote
Welcome to Registration Code City, a celebration of the harmony between humans and the Expo Logic waiting room.

In order to enter the Expo Logic waiting room, every eligible attendee will need their own personal registration code. Personal registration codes help prevent ineligible members and purple-eyed Aipoms from entering the Expo Logic waiting room.

To locate your registration code and Expo Logic waiting room link, you won’t need a world class detective! Simply logging in to your Comic-Con Member ID account and selecting the “Registration Info” tab is your best bet. The link and your registration code have also been sent to you via email.

The Expo Logic waiting room will open for registration code authorization at 8:00 AM Pacific Daylight Time (PDT) on October 12, 2019. You don’t need to arrive exactly at 8:00 AM PDT, so go catch a Cubone and arrive 10 – 15 minutes prior to 9:00 AM PDT. But be warned - the waiting room will close promptly at 9:00 AM PDT and if you do not enter your code in time, Mr. Mime will put up an invisible wall and you will be shut out.

Shortly after 9:00 AM PDT (following numerous cups of coffee with an extra shot), Expo Logic will begin randomly moving members from the waiting room to a registration session. Regardless of what time you entered the waiting room, you may or may not be selected for a registration session.

If you are accidentally removed from the Expo Logic waiting room or temporarily lose connectivity because Haunter unplugged your computer, don’t fret! As long as you entered the Expo Logic waiting room prior to 9:00 AM PDT, you can return using the waiting room link and re-enter your registration code. Removal from the waiting room will not impact your chances of being randomly selected for a registration session.

Your personal registration code will only authorize one device and one browser to enter the waiting room. Please do not attempt to authorize your registration code on multiple browsers! If you do, the most recent device your registration code was entered on will become authorized and your previous device will be kicked out. If you and a friend will be using the same computer, use a different browser for each registration code. DO NOT use different tabs within the same browser.

We highly suggest only joining a buying group with Pokémon you know, like Psyduck and Snorlax (just make sure he’s awake!). Buying groups can be helpful, but we've seen an increasing number of people get shut out due to disorganized efforts and lack of communication. Once a Member ID is used in a registration session, it is locked for 15 minutes and you will not be able to use it if you are also selected for a registration session. Not even a powerful, man-made Pokémon will be able help!

Also, something very twisty: Your personal registration code is embedded in your waiting room URL. Do not post pictures of your waiting room or registration session online, or someone will be able to use your code to enter and your session will expire.

Additional details about registration codes and the Expo Logic waiting room can be found here.

Pika Pika!

Forum Housekeeping:

Split this post (as well as several posts after this relating/replying to it) from the returning registration date poll thread and merged them into the SDCC 2020 Returning Registration thread.

Removed "info" from thread title so we can designate this as the main 2020 returning registration discussion thread (and not just for info).

Still working on getting the last members of my personal buying groups to put forth their information (<3 google forms). But I've sorted out most of the logistics with spots for them planned out.

Almost ready for Saturday! Though I'm going to a concert Friday night at 8pm, so I might be even more sleep deprived than normal (which I feel like the SDCC gods look kindly upon.)

I just found out this other group that our group often partner with (as in, during reg, if they have extra registration slots available, they'll help our group, and vice versa), won't be going at all. Or at least they're 75-90% sure they're not going. They've been suffering SDCC burnout for a couple years, and they're feeling it's not worth it anymore. It sucks because they were my safety net if our group of 4 completely whiffs during registration. We've bailed each other at least every year.

Ah well. If anyone is in a group of 2 and wants to team up with our group of 4 so we have an even 6, let me know!

Even if they are not going, you could still use their registration codes if they are willing to offer them to you.  It's worth a shot to at least ask.

Good luck to all on Saturday! Stressing here over the power outages and crazy winds we are having. So far still have power but there are houses in my city that are without power. (In south Orange County). I live next to a canyon so the winds really whip up a lot at night and so far they are pretty crazy. Never a dull moment when it comes to the battle for the badge!!!

No, you do not.  You only have to buy for the MemberID that you first enter on the form once your session is selected.  The registration code just gets you into the waiting room.

No. You don't.

Once you get to the page where you enter the id's, you can clear out the ID of the person who is not going and enter in your ID.

Heh. Same. Last year's Returning Reg was a load of stress. Our group managed only Sunday badges, and I got them literally less than a minute before they were all gone. But we had much better luck in Open Reg, so the lesson is, if things go awry tomorrow, we always have one more shot!

If you are accidentally disconnected from the waiting room at any point, simply return to the registration code entry page and log back in. This will not affect your chances of being selected for a registration session. Only registration codes that were authorized before 9:00 AM PDT will be allowed re-entry to the waiting room.

If you are being removed from the waiting room every 90 – 120 seconds, your browser is not compatible or your registration code is being used on another browser. Please use the browser check feature below. Do not share your registration code.

Thank you for your patience and may the Force be with you!

There will be two more four-day passes available for you all this year, and two fewer Icelanders at the con next year: after three years in a row, we have decided that our SDCC adventure ends here. We have been very lucky to get four-day passes in each of the last three years, giving us the chance to make the most out of each of those "once in a lifetime" experiences 😄

Thank you all for all the advice, information and support you have given us over the years, and best of luck to all of you 😀

Our group of 6 got mostly what we wanted. Three of six sessions got in, one right before and one right after Preview Night was sold out. I used the third to help a random FoCC'er. A couple of us will be back for Open Reg to try for that PN, and to try to help some of our friends who've never gone. All in all though, we had pretty good luck.

Question: How are people still doing multiple "sessions" when you now need to put in the unique code to get into the waiting room - and it kicks you out of your other session if you put in the code more than once??

If you have multiple people in your group who are eligible to participate, they will each have a separate code to enter the waiting room.
I had four sessions running, only one got in for 4-Day badges.

Well, my family is 3 of us + 2 friends we go with every year.  My wife and I do our thing w/5 different codes (so we essentially could buy 15 different badges total).  That means I could get a 'hit' w/my CCI code and then get a hit a minute later with my son's CCI code.

For General Reg. it's even easier if you know people who have a Comic-Con ID but aren't buying badges that year which ups the number of "sessions."

Codes from other people.  Either someone is the designated buyer (like when my brother is unavailable, he gives me his code), or friends who aren’t going give them their codes.

You can only have one session per code, but you can run multiple sessions with different codes. You either use different computers, different browsers, or have your browser sessions set up so that they don't share cookies (e.g., chrome "people".)

For example I managed my session and my son's on the same pc, mine in firefox and his in chrome.

I set my alarm for 8AM, but woke up past 9.... luckily my friend was on and he got in the room at 9:06AM. All days and preview were available.... unfortunately, between us two, we only had enough for two days each (Fri + Sat).
Good thing we decided on those days instead of Sat and Sun because it looks like we'll have a good chance at getting Thu and Sun on the next round... if we get in.

OK, I thought that was correct; A unique code from a qualified returning registrant is still required for each of these "sessions".

I've read tweets from many, many disappointed people who have failed yet again to secure tickets during returning registration, and those who missed out completely. Some only got a day or two and are hoping to get the other days during open registration. So no, I don't think it's gotten easier.

My group of 20ish all got badges, only one person only got a partial badge, so we had a lot of people get in. Of course, one person went off script from the usual buying group parameters, sigh, and then one panicked and when his net cut out when he'd gotten in, andhe didn't immediately give us his code (he was on mobile chat with us) so we couldn't reuse his session. Regardless, we got enough people in to get all 4-days (and some +PN for people who wanted them) sans the one partial badge.

Basically, we were super successful and we'll be adding some newbies for open reg. so we'll be doing general/open reg as well!

I agree, FoCC does seem to be the outlier, with the advent of bigger groups. I'm actually not part of a big group -- I really ought to join you guys though -- but I have helped and have been helped by other FOCC'ers here. Without you guys, I probably would've missed out at least one of these years, or at least not gotten all four days.

FoCC is an outlier because we are organized and dedicated. Just existing means that we are a self-selecting group, because only those who are serious enough about going to SDCC are going to find their way here to post. We naturally attract people who want to learn more and are willing to put in effort to get what they want. So of course our results are going to be better! When we organize and work together, that only increases our odds.

I know that we were not able to open badge buying groups this year, but the parking and hotel exchanges are open to all regular posters, and we always share information freely regarding exclusives, offsite events, etc. The more you stick around here, the more you will learn!

I also had to help run my other friend's group and everyone in that group also got what they wanted! This year's Returning Reg was a definite success :) Can't wait to help out for Open Reg!

Definitely easier this year for the folks working in groups. Can’t tell if returning attendee population participating in the PreSale is lower due to two consecutive lackluster cons (2018 & 2019), but I suspect it is a major factor.

Buying groups are at capacity due to tech limitations.

I have nothing to compare it to, since this was my first pre-reg.; but I did it alone with only one browser and got in. I had the opportunity to get 4 days, but I only wanted Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Anecdotally, I know of a group of 6-8 who decided to not go next year, after having gone for the past 5-6+ years or so. The general feeling for them is they’re burnt out, and the hassle & stress of badges, hotels, lines, and prices just wasn’t worth it anymore. They’re big Hall H folks, so I can imagine the quality of programming lately also played into it.

That being said, I doubt the demand during Open Reg will be any less. For every person who’s done with SDCC, there are three more chomping at the bit to get in.

Anyone feel like this year was a little easier to get tickets as more people was disappointed of this years comic con and dropping out.
Nope, my two codes (me, spouse) shut out again during Returning Reg, just like last year. But we did great (4 days) during last year's Open Reg, so fingers crossed.

I did experience a really weird glitch on one of my sessions, though: at around 9:30 or so (just after Saturday sold out) I swear that my screen momentarily switched to that "we are redirecting you" to the badge buy screen. But then a moment later it refreshed and I was back in the Expo waiting room.  :(

Oh well, if nothing else we're Returning Volunteers. so...  :)

I'm seeing this more and more among the groups I follow. Most of these groups were started around the time I started making serious attempts to attend every year (2011-2012), so it may just be that 7-9 years is capacity for a lot of people and they could very well be replaced by new blood who will keep things insane for another 7-9 years.

Then again (and this is admittedly not based on anything scientific) I have noticed demand dropping in other areas. A number of my friends who have always had SDCC on their bucket list are now starting to say they don't care so much anymore. And I've noticed the comments on SDCC's page about people who can't get in have become more subdued. SDCC will still be gigantic for quite awhile, but I really do think that in 3-4 years, we could see it no longer immediately sell out.

And we've already seen the first domino fall -- volunteer registration (which was open nearly a month last year.)

I noticed this too! There was very little outrage on Twitter. Then again, this is Ret Reg, and most of us are experienced with the disappointment and know we have another — albeit smaller — chance in Open Reg. And I noticed more and more tweets to the effect of “I don’t need #SDCC” or “there are better cons to go to”. Which is true. There seems to be a surge of other cons that are slowly chipping away at the SDCC dominance.

I do believe the peak was three years ago, the last NerdHQ year. Since then, SDCC has felt... less. If this trend continues, then I can see demand having a noticeable downturn, though I agree, SDCC will be sold out for years and years to come.

I think we’ll get a better sense of general sentiment during Open Reg. Returning Registration alone is not enough to see if there is indeed a shift.

^I am actually see this with a lot of cons, not just SDCC. Pax doesn’t sell out anymore, but that may be cause the fifth day is a Monday. Thursday badges for NYCC were still available this year.  E3 doesn’t even sell out to the public. I think the con boom is going to taper off now.

To be fair though, I am cutting back on NYCC even though it’s my local con because I find things to enjoy about going to San Diego and because SDCC still has things for me to enjoy everyday while I’ve found that I can accomplish what I want at NYCC in one day

This happened to me one year. I happened to get lucky with two sessions getting in, so I ended up buying six badges on my CC. My bank declined the second one for what I can only assume for the reason they saw two purchases for the exact same amount to the same company within 10min of each other.

So now whenever I get this lucky and have multiple sessions get through, I use different CCs for each.

Same here for me, although I'm thinking of skipping NYCC altogether next year, and burn out is not my reason for not going.  It doesn't have the breadth of activities that exist at SDCC.  I went to NYCC just on Thursday this year, because I wanted to go to the Star Talk panel.  I don't need to do that anymore, and the exhibit floor doesn't have any more than SDCC's.  BTW... NYCC did NOT sell out for Thursday.

Next year (God Willing), will be my 6th year at SDCC, and I'm looking forward to it.  If the main interest for people is Hall-H, I can see getting burned out.  But SDCC offers so much more (IMO).  I've found the smaller panels very interesting and not nearly as difficult to get into.

My wife and I received our barcodes this morning. We both got 4 days thanks to our group. There were about 14 of us in the group, five got through and we mostly got what we wanted, although only 3 of us got preview night and one friend only got Thu, Fri and Sun. We'll all try again during general registration to attempt to fill in the gaps, but so far, we're feeling pretty thankful.

The last two years, I was able to help a friend who helped my wife and me the previous two years before that. It always feels good to help someone else out. It's such an empty, futile feeling just staring at that blue circle and reading those status update messages regarding inventory running low.

This is me being selfish, but when people are wishing everyone good luck in registration, don’t they realize others having good luck lowers your own luck??

Then again, maybe karma’s a thing, in which case you can’t ever say “good luck” enough.

Here is an interesting question I always wondering. Comic con blog did a rough estimation on the odds of getting badges.. Does all the people that works in buying group decrease the odds for everyone else that is not working in a group... I think the numbers were 50 percent for returning registration and about .06% for open registration. If I have to guess the answer would be yes. The analyst in me always wonder about stuff like this. :-\

I would think it would depend upon whether everyone in the buying group is buying for themselves or not. At the end of the day they (expo logic) moves X amount of Member IDs at a time to the Buy page, only stopping when all tickets are sold out. I think where the buying groups ( and some individuals) tilt it is when you have Member IDs logged in buying for 3 others within their group. I think this happens quite a bit during Open Reg.

Yea.. I think even this individual after buying for themselves.. they will always buy max number of available tickets for their group. Yea the short answer is definitely buying group lowers your chances of getting tickets.
Title: Re: SDCC 2020 Returning Registration

Not only does the buying group make sure no buying spots go to waste, it also evens out the odds. If you are on your own, there is a small chance you might get in, and a bigger chance that you won't. So there are 2 extremes. In a buying group, the averages tend to pan out, so you're much more likely to be around the 'middle' probabilities. Chances are good that if you don't get in, someone else will, and vice versa.

So You are saying buying group does lower that 50 percent probability cause it increases the odds of people in the buying group of getting tickets?

I was honestly interested in getting into a buying group this time around but they were all capped, so...

One thing that no one has ever been able to explain to me satisfactorily is how buying for others within a buying group is organized and prioritized. I’ve heard some very simplistic - sounding answers given but in my mind, it can’t possibly work unless someone is monitoring all of the buying activity real time.

I think it skews the odds way more in open reg, where you have people who are not buying any more days for themselves but are still buying for the group.

Also, I read somewhere recently that the Returning Reg odd are more like 30% now. Apparently there were complaints of unfairness so the number of tickets placed in the RR pot were fewer this year. At least that’s what I read.

Hmmm seems to be working so far...buying groups at least FOCC..cause haven't heard any horror stories of people getting burned or not getting their money back. I assume the communication probably involves a big group chat..and a checklist.. hehehe

The odds are an estimate. No one knows how many badges are available during either badge sales. CCI is not talking.

As for setting priority in a buying group it depends on the group. Monitoring is done real time in our group. Props go to the FOCC person or persons who put together the google sheets we use.

That is true but if joining a group increases the odds for people in the group vice versa..it will decrease the odds for everyone else.. I am not saying being in group is good or bad...just like to analyst random stuff....by the way.. I was able to get all four days just by myself and my wife.

Thanks, thats what I figured. Real time monitoring of who still needs tickets and directing those who get selected next to buy for the remaining members. And I assume returning members get priority in the “who gets bought for first” queue. You’re right - that’s a lot of work!!

This was year three in a badge-buying group.  I joined the badge-buying group after joining the group for Hall H line the previous SDCCI.  At that point, I had gotten to know a good number of folks in the group, and felt comfortable trusting them.  I too have general trust issues with strangers, but after getting to know people I realized everyone in the group is generally similar to me: good-hearted, easy-going, fun to hang out with, and incredibly nice/helpful.  I witnessed that first year how everyone selflessly seemed to help everyone else with exclusives, saving seats, getting food for folks in line, etc.  I realized that I went from waiting in line roughly 36 hours for Sat. Hall H to roughly 3 or 4 in a group, and it couldn't have worked out better (all three years so far in the group have been aces)!

So I decided to join the badge-buying group, even though I felt OK with five folks in my family/close friends to buy with codes.  I figured the odds were improved with more people helping out.  Holy cow, have I seen that concept work out splendidly!

Our group uses a messaging app during the sales to communicate in real-time: there were probably several folks physically taking via the voice option, but I didn't partake in that (I was at a HS band rehearsal).  There's a good spreadsheet that we all must sign in before 9 or else no one buys a badge for you.  As people are selected, the buyer immediately logs whom they're buying a badge for (there's an "in progress" signal that shows which group member is getting a badge purchased for them live), then when the process of buying the badge is complete the buyer logs whom they bought badges for.  It's obviously the 'honor system' when it comes to paying up, but I don't think there've been any problems.  If someone screws someone over, the badge is canceled, the person is kicked out of the group (it's a FOCC group so I assume they'd be black-listed from all groups here) and probably shunned pretty hard-corps.  There are relatively a lot of group members so I suspect the black-listing would run deep.

For me personally, I had multiple screens open as well as the spread sheet, so I saw my blue spinning wheel on Epic's waiting room page as well as the constant "flickering" of action on the group's spreadsheet.  Before all badges sold-out everyone in our group this year got at least a Day's badge, with most getting multiple days IIRC.  My codes never hit, but someone in the group got me 4-Days.  Last year my codes didn't hit but someone bought me 4-Days w/PN.  The first year I participated I got my own badge and was able to help someone else get 4-Day w/PN.  Last year, even though I live in SD, I jumped into the Hotel fun to try to help the group, got a great hotel, and was able to help a group member with that.  In turn, several people were able to help me get Group 1 parking.

Of course, the helping each other out is only part of the Group benefits.  Our group did a pre-Con Disneyland trip the days before PN this past summer and we had a blast together!  There were plenty of after-hours hangs as well (that I missed out on mostly because 1) I have my 17 year old with me most days/nights of SDCCI and 2) I always feel so exhausted - I'm hoping to participate more with the group in 2020).  The person that was able to buy me a badge this year is a real great gal that I've done a line-shift with in year's past and the fact that I feel relatively close to her makes it all the more rewarding, I think.

This will be my Fourth Comic-Con with the group, and each year I've gotten to know more and more people and it has really changed my enjoying myself even more.  2020 will be my 21st SD Comic-Con, and I was kind of in a funk where I really wondered if it was worth the $$ for my family and I to go if it meant spending literally 2/4 days either in a line or in Hall H.  Not only has being in a group changed that significantly (again, I think shift-wise I was only in line maybe 4 hours last year, though I helped a few people cover parts of their shift at times), but I've gotten to know a ton of great people from all over the world via the Group.

Sorry for the rambling.  I've seen the fruits of the Group-mentality many times over: from helping with lines, to helping with badge-buying, helping w/exclusives, helping with signings, to just having people to hang out with and chat throughout the Con.

[member=380]perc2100[/member] thank you, that was a great explanation! So I’m assuming it’s built into the spreadsheet’s algorithm who a person is to buy for once their code hits? Or is it just “buy for the next two ahead of you who still need tickets”? In any case I can definitely see the benefit in working with a large group. Hopefully some spaces open up next year. And if I get lucky and get a four day ticket during open reg AND get a downtown hotel, I will definitely look into joining a line group, as well!

We all have trust issues. But if you want a better chance at a common goal, then you need to trust someone. And so far, the trust has helped out a lot of members.

That is true but if joining a group increases the odds for people in the group vice versa..it will decrease the odds for everyone else.. I am not saying being in group is good or bad...just like to analyst random stuff....by the way.. I was able to get all four days just by myself and my wife.
well, that’s good that you happened to get in. But you may not be so lucky next time. A group helps better your odds even with one badge during return where you have a second opportunity to get what’s missing.

The likely reason that you've never gotten a 'straight' answer on this is that every group does it differently. The process of 'for whom to buy' is left entirely up to the group leader. Some groups don't have an order: you just buy for anyone who is on the list who doesn't already have a badge, your choice. Other groups have an order based on past buying history, in order of signing up, random determination, or other methods. However the one constant is that the order is not constant, because obviously that would be unfair to the people at the bottom. It is up to the group leaders to determine how the order is determined in their individual groups, and how often it shakes up.

Regarding trust issues, the FoCC groups do keep track of those who violate trust and it is not tolerated in any way. Those people find themselves shut out of all FoCC groups and exchanges, not just the badge-buying groups.

Interesting. Thank you for your insight. Based on what you’ve said it seems that the group leader’s methodology could have a real impact on the success of all group members getting tickets. And I believe I have seen groups allude to the newest members being placed on “the bottom” - i.e. have their tickets purchased last.

I never been in a buying group because of trust issues.. How do I count on strangers i met on the internet to reimburse me after i purchase 500 bucks worth of tickets for them? But that's just me..hehe..Hence i understand the restrictive nature of trying to join a group.

If they don't pay, then you can cancel theirs.

Piggybacking on the questions of groups, I assume most groups have accommodations for buying for pairs or even triplets of members? For example, a married couple who wouldn't go to SDCC without the other, so they either both get a badge or neither do.

Good question. Although I usually attend more days than my spouse (we live in SD, so..) I would want us to both get at least one day for returning reg purposes.

Yes, but again, this varies by group and is up to the individual group leader.

As a long time buying group member, you have a good observation and a fair thought. I will say human nature is one where you buy (read) from the top down on any written document so there is a tendency in a random natural organic way to buy that way. So I would say being at the physical bottom of a list may put you in a random lower buying order than being at the very top. Additionally, undoubtedly if there is no specific predetermine order, that if you had 2 spots available and a list of people to buy for is it only natural human nature to buy for people you know better or are friends with or know they have a history of paying you back sooner than later. Of course. That again I believe is just natural human behavior. Having understood and potentially accepting all that, a buying group is still by far the best way to go. Especially with the good people here on FoCC. In my experience they have the most integrity and are more likely the type of people that actually would consciously purposely buck the trend of going top to bottom or buying for friends first and buy for the person on the bottom of the list and buy for randoms just as much as someone they may know.

Most importantly you may have that year where you get completely shut out and are beyond thankful and indebted to your group for being able to grab you even a single day! (ie Me this year!) #loveBG1

The trust thing can definitely be tough.  What I kept reminding myself before I jumped into the badge-buying group is that nearly everyone I've ever met at Comic-Con has been a stand-up, good person (maybe not the dude who stabbed the other dude before the COWBOYS & ALIENS panel  :P ).  In 20 years of attending Comic-Con every stranger I've ever sat next to in a panel, or stood in line around has always been nothing short of friendly and helpful.  Even if it's just a "can you hold my place while I run to the bathroom" while in line, or "can you watch my stuff while I grab some food" in Hall H the people have always been incredibly helpful.  Most of us attendees are similar in ideals, know the difficulties of Comic-Con from experience, and seemingly enjoy paying it forward.  I suspect it's nearly impossible to do Comic-Con completely on your own so we all likely understand how helping each other out benefits all and makes everyone's time more pleasant.

One of my all-time favorite movies is BRAZIL*, with a classic line/ethos from Robert De Niro's character: "We're all in this together."  That's a philosophy I constantly remind myself, especially at events as huge as Comic-Con https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xlCPkmb6cuY
(De Niro's character is a bit punk rock in ethos in BRAZIL, but it's really funny when you realize he's essentially just an engineer who doesn't want to do the bureaucratic paperwork)

Sub-question regarding groups:

has anyone done the math to determine if/when a group is TOO big?  Like, is there a point where there are too many people?

I suck at math so if this is implausible feel free to tell me and mock my lack of mathiness

I could certainly be wrong but I don't think mathematically there is number that the group would be to big because as it grew the 1:3 buying badges ratio would be a constant.  I think the upper number contrast is more of a technical and management issue.  This year was a perfect example of the technical as FOCC couldn't open up the groups because technically the amazing sheets we use and volunteer support to create/fix them were strained to the limit.  Then there is the management side of it which is dependent on the group leader.  As you are well aware there is quite a bit of work that goes into sending out communications, creating the forms/sheets, prioritizing order, then the sale itself is crazy hectic trying to monitor multiple chats and trying to make everyone happy.  Even afterward making sure the financial transactions go smoothly.  I'm sure each group leader probably has a number in there head of how many they can handle.  Probably even more important than the total number is the number of "challenging" folks they have in the group that take up most of their time.

I completely concur with all your statements about how helpful a group is, especially as time goes by and you make con friends.  Numbers wise if you are in a buying group of 200 and you are the very last on the list it is still better than not being in a group.    If you are #200 and you get in to buy you are going to buy for yourself (and spouse or whatever) first so you are good to go.  If you never got in to buy even being #200 and only getting say Thur/Sun was still better than you getting nothing.  Besides the trust issue I see no drawback to being in a group.

[member=380]perc2100[/member] Love everything about this post!  So glad you found a fantastic group to work with, and that you've all become con friends!!

Our buying group was one of the early ones here, formed in 2013 for the 2014 badge sale.  We've had some people come and go but also have quite a few people who participate year after year.  We help one another with the hotel sale as well, and various other ticket purchases, etc. throughout the year, as well as at SDCC.  We see each other at the FoCC meet ups and also have a group meet up that is just us.  We organize through a FB group and do most of our chatting through Messenger.  It works for us!

I looked at that a while back but I can't find the post. [member=5606]tsnyder[/member] is right, the more people in the group the better your chances but there are diminishing returns to consider against the work needed to manage a larger group. The math isn't too bad if you assume everyone has equal chances but you have to make an assumption about the overall probability that a session will be chosen.

If you can code a bit it is also a good problem to look at via simulation. A key thing is to fix on what questions you want to ask, for example the odds of you getting a badge versus the entire group getting a badge, and so on.

Yeah I might be thinking of a post you made quite awhile back that had real nitty gritty type detail about this stuff.  I suck at math, but this time of statistical analysis fascinates me for reasons my HS and college math teachers might find amusing, I guess!  I kind of vaguely remember a real good breakdown of this type of stuff, but to be honest it was written well before I joined a group that was larger than the people in my immediate family/friends circle so I likely passively read it.

I'll do some digging over the next day or two (Tuesdays and especially Wednesday are lighter days for me than other days of the week) and if I find the post I'll share here.  I vaguely remember statistics that showed chances for Returning Reg vs Open Reg, group/no group, etc. and I kind of remember it being really well-thought out and detailed (and compelling).

I'm definitely not the group leader, and I happily sit back and mostly hope I don't screw things up for our fabulous leader who really does a lot of awesome leg work for us knuckleheads that hopefully don't ruin everything (like, for example, I somehow found a way and screwed up coding in the spreadsheet logging Saturday, or something  :o )

Up until RR 2014, I said I would never join a group due to trust issues and in fact just the year before I was ripped off by somebody online for the first and so far only time.  I’ll just say it was not related to CC.

After lucking out on my own in 2013 when we had not two but three registration attempts which consisted of 1.) Return Registration 2.) Open Registration and 3.) Last Chance Registration, I decided to bite the bullet and take my chance with joining a group and if I get ripped off, it’s on me.  The last time I did this on my own, I only got Thursday and Sunday at RR and nada at the later two registrations.  It was also the last one where everybody jumped in the waiting room at the same time in which some got in and others did not.

So ever since I joined a group, I’ve been lucky to get Preview Night each and every time, although last year I decided to forgo preview night and chose to get Sunday only this year.

Congrats!! Majority of our buying group got 3-4days and a few lucky folks who snagged all 5 days.

Lol I didn’t have any luck last year in snagging a downtown SD hotel during Hotelpocalypse any suggestions/tips you care to share?

Persistence. I crapped out during Hotelpocalypse (even though I got in early), so I ritually stalked the hotel list like a Hawk and on the final day was able to score the Hilton Bayfront. In addition, even if you don't initially get the hotel you want, there are always good, downtown hotels available as the days get closer.

Like [member=3102]sylent_asassin[/member] said, persistence, last year I got MGH from the sale which turned to be an awesome hotel, but still decided to stalk the waitlist (part of my personal SDCC experience of each year at this point lol) saw the HBF pop up too and decided to reduce my MGH reservation and spent two nights on HBF, got rewarded by meeting Sarah Chalke (Elliot from scrubs) at the lobby of the bayfront!

Did you get the initial confirmation email? (There are two emails... the initial confirmation that comes 10-30 minutes after registration, and the CC charged confirmation which comes within 48 hours)

I don't know if this happened to you, but one year I nearly screwed up the badge buying process because I didn't actually go through the entire process. There's a page where you have to type "AGREE", and I thought that was actually the confirmation page. It was some 10 minutes later (still within badge buying window) when I looked and noticed it. Luckily I hadn't closed the tab.

This is awesome!! Thanks for the tips and those experiences meeting Sarah Chalke are priceless

Thanks! You have definitely given me some hope in this process!! Thank you!!

Did you get the initial confirmation email? (There are two emails... the initial confirmation that comes 10-30 minutes after registration, and the CC charged confirmation which comes within 48 hours)

Only for one session. I got nothing for the other two. But looking at the screenshots, I think you may be right about the AGREE box. I never should have let the wife run that laptop! LOL

If you got to the point of the "AGREE" box, didnt fill it and you have a screenshot you can try emailing CCI, have heard they are willing to help and may be able to fix it, maybe not, but it doesnt hurt trying.

Especially post-Returning Reg/pre-General Registration.  Meaning, there are still likely at least 50% of all badge inventory and CCI maybe has a bit more leeway than they'd maybe have after General Registration sales

Question for those that work in a group, do you guys meet up at someone's house/central location like Starbucks?  Or is everyone in your group at their own separate locations?   Or perhaps a combination of both?

I'm wondering if the registration system has an algorithm that recognizes same network addresses of people in the virtual waiting room and therefore allows one of the people from the group into the registration stage.

I have four devices logged into the same network address, which is my home internet, and typically for the last few years, one of the four devices have gotten through the registration page where we were able to get at least four days passes.   So, I'm wondering if a group using the same network address helps getting out of the waiting and into the registration stage.   Typically, once of the devices gets into registration, the other three remain in the waiting room until all the badges are sold out.

For our group, we are located throughout the US and communicate on our google spreadsheet chat function. It has worked well for our group, imo

I’ve always been paranoid about this, so when I handle registration for my sister and I, I always use two separate computers, with one connected to VPN, so they’re both coming from separate IPs. Same thing with Hotel Registration.

That being said, I know of others who have gotten through with multiple codes from the same household, and I’m fairly certain they weren’t using VPN.

No VPN used.  My group all meets together at a computer lab so several devices going on the same IP.  Never not got in on at least 2 devices.
Thank goodness some of our group are school teachers!

The group I roll with uses a chat app (that also has voice functionality to talk in real-time or text in real-time) to communicate.  Also, watching the Google Drive spreadsheet update in real time is beneficial.  Members are scattered throughout the country, with some from other countries (or rather, U.S. island territories)

There are a few (including myself) who can't help but stalk the OnPeak hotel list after Hotelpocalypse. You will see constant posts on the forum about available hotels. In particular, the hotels that are about half a mile from the Convention Center tend to pop up quite often (Westin Gaslamp, The Sofia Hotel, etc.).

If you're VERY brave, waiting until the week or two before the Con can net you some of the big name hotels.  ;D

I wondered that myself, so for the last several years, my wife and I used our house internet for one computer and a separate hot spot or an iPad for the other. I didn't realize until the last minute that I screwed up and used IE instead of Chrome on one computer and that's the one that didn't get through. Not sure if that has anything to do with it, but it's somewhat worth noting as there have been complaints and issues in the past.

It's smart to have a back-up; I had a fall-back plan and had an outskirts downtown hotel booked in case I didn't get lucky. When the HBF became available, I booked it for the last two days of the con and then called my current hotel and cancelled the last two days of that stay since I had already paid for the first two. That way, I'm not penalized and giving money away.

Moving from downtown to the HBF on Friday was a bit of a hassle because of construction near Petco Park and afternoon traffic, but it was well worth it. I ended up seeing Cress Williams and Christine Adams from Black Lightning and Christine let me get a selfie while in the elevator. She was really sweet! We also saw Donald Faison (from Scrubs and Emergence) chatting it up with people in the lobby.

Anyway, towards the end of the waitlist days, I had seen every hotel show vacancies except for the Hard Rock and the Omni. Just when I had almost abandoned all hope, BAM!! Multiple HBF rooms showed up! :D

Yes, I noticed that as well - good and close hotels opening up space last minute. But I'm not brave enough to do that, especially since I'm going solo.

72+ hours and I never received a confirmation for 2 of my 3 sessions that made it through. Card was only charged for one session. I have screen shots, but hopefully they contact me soon to tell me my other 2 sessions were flagged, so I can use another card.

I have the emailed receipt, but still no bar code confirmation.

I wonder if the 72 hours include the Monday Holiday or not, though seems like you can try and Contact CCI.

From the Contact Us feature.

ATTENDEE BADGES – RETURNING REGISTRATION

If you were able to purchase badges during Returning Registration, you will receive a badge confirmation email within 72 hours of your purchase. We will not reply to any inquiries regarding a badge confirmation email prior to the 72‑hour window. If you do not receive your badge confirmation email within that time frame, you will have the ability to resend your own confirmation in late October. At that time, the Resend Comic-Con Badge Confirmation button will be available under the "Registration Info" tab in your Member ID account.

Just curious...

Are you sure you got the 'Congratulations' page when you bought your badges.

Also...

I got a message that my credit card was declined, and a link to re-enter my information.  Once I did that, I got my barcode email almost immediately.  [member=4892]miclpea[/member] got the same thing. Maybe you get the same email, and it went to your spam.  Just grasping at straws.

It was [member=2539]Michael M[/member]  who had the same issue (I think)

I got a reply back regarding no confirmation barcode. They basically sent a canned response about returning registration. Some bot must have sent it. I had expected that, though. It has been my experience over the years that they do not properly respond to emails.

Buyer, you would have 3 emails.

1. an Order Acknowledgement email,
2. a Receipt email (after the Buyer's credit card was processed),
3. followed by the Important Registration Information (barcode email).

Are you only missing the barcode? Try a search for

expologic

and maybe that will show up?

That reply seems to just generate a work ticket for the issue.  They may likely follow up.  I wonder if you could also send an email to [email protected] for the barcode?

I take back what I said last.  They finally replied with the barcode. Email works after all. FWIW, I did buy for three others on another account, which went through with no problems. It was just this one that was stuck.

Pretty much everything I get from SDCC goes into the spam box. No matter how much I click the not junk button, it still does that.

Oh man that blows. They really need to eliminate that last AGREE page or at least merge it with the CC page. In this day and age, most people’s expectations are that entering CC is the final step.

That whole process could benefit from some UX improvements - mainly not letting you advance without checking off at least a day for a person.  I've seen a few people now say that they added the member ID and then forgot/missed checking off days for that person, and if you advance you can't go back :(  at least pop up a warning saying that they don't have anything selected!  No one is adding a name without wanting to buy for someone.

Question that I am probably overthinking...So I am attending and got my confirmation email. But you know when you log in, and there is green writing, it does not say attending. It just says "shipping address verified, returning volunteer, and registered volunteer." I am pretty sure it does not matter, but I cannot remember from two years ago what that little section said.

Noted in another thread that the references to Returning Reg were removed. The green writing in the top right corner which referenced "CC'20 Paid Attendee Return Reg" is also gone.  The tab stated "You are eligible to participate in Comic-Con 2020 Attendee Returning Registration."
