Title: SDCC 2017 Hotel Request Form Lottery - Submission Times
Post by: mark on April 24, 2017, 12:34:11 PM
Hi everyone! The sale is almost upon us and once again, we are ready to take the raw heat and turmoil of it all and chill it down with some cold, hard data analysis. We had awesome participation last year, so this year if you're willing, please answer as many of the questions below as possible.

If you can, please get the timestamps from your browser cache as they will be exact.  Some instructions on how to do this are below. If you can't, and can only give a rough estimate that's fine as well, and we will treat it accordingly in the analysis.  Feel free to post information from the sale and then update it later with the result, make separate posts, whatever works for you. If you don't remember some things that's fine too, anything will help.

Thanks in advance, and good luck with the sale!

[UPDATE] We now have a google form that you can use if you prefer. Though if you have already entered some information in this thread, indicate something at the beginning of the form that we can use to match it up, like usernameXYZ or usernameXYZ's friend.

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1oyPaL5_pMqHB8R-s4kWDVH5mHb7AW7E5QPKJwvquIQE (https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1oyPaL5_pMqHB8R-s4kWDVH5mHb7AW7E5QPKJwvquIQE)

*****************************************************************************

Questions

What time were you given access to the form?
What time did you submit the form?
What was the first queue number that you saw?

How many downtown hotels did you choose (0-6)
How many non-downtown hotels did you choose (0-6)

What option did you pick if your preferred hotels weren't available? (closest to the convention center, lowest available rate, shuttle route,  disregard my request if choices aren't available)
What waitlist preference did you pick? (yes, no)

If you get a notification, what group were you in? (May 1, May 8.)
What was your result? (#1 choice, Other downtown hotel on your list, other downtown, Top choice non-downtown, other non-downtown, waitlist, nothing.)

[UPDATE] Added a separate option for your #1 choice, this matches the options in the google form.

Finding your form access and submission timestamps

Right now we only have instructions for Firefox and Chrome. If you have trouble with the instructions or are using a different browser like IE or Safari please don't sweat it, we don't want to add any more stress to your day. Rough estimates are very helpful too. (If you do find an easy way to get the information from other browsers, please let me know and we'll add it here.)

This is based on information supplied by the always helpful [member=3710]SteveD[/member] and [member=3729]racheva[/member] last year. We will update it if there are changes for 2017.

In chrome you can type chrome://cache in the address bar.

on the page, search (<CTRL> F) for cci.onpeak.info/addRequest?q=
This will be the form entry cache file.

search for cci.onpeak.info/thanks
This will be the form submission cache file

Firefox has the same type of cache search if you type about:cache and then select "List Cache Entries" under Disk.
Then do the same search as above.

When you find the cache entry you are searching for, just click on it to see the time information.
This will work for both Chrome and Firefox.
For example, the file should contain something like this:

Quote
        HTTP/1.1 302 Found
        Content-Type: text/html; charset=utf-8
        Date: Tue, 05 Apr 2016 16:10:44 GMT
        Location: /addRequest
        Server: nginx/1.8.0
        Vary: Accept
        X-Powered-By: Express
        Content-Length: 66

I got a reply from the Unofficial SDCC Blog on Facebook and they said that when you submit the form shouldn't matter this year, only when you get access to it.

Not sure if this has been confirmed either way but it would make things a lot easier if it only matters when you first get in.

That matches how things worked last year, and CCI has stated it very clearly this year, so that should be how it works. We still want to look at it though, if nothing else it might be interesting to see how the average time taken to fill out the form has changed from last year. (And there's always the small chance that something goes awry.)

Isn't getting access to the form randomized? I am so confused by it all. You get in the waiting room, get a random spot, and once you get in.. that is the time stamp for your chance of a hotel? So if you have a high number in line you basically already SOL?

I haven't been able to score a hotel for the last 2 years now lol. I'd like to get at least "something" this year but they are just making it more and more a luck of the draw thing.

It is randomized. You may see a queue number, but (assuming it is the same as last year) that indicates your place in one of many lines, not overall.

For the 2 timestamps, "What time were you given access to the form?" is when you are taken out of your queue and are able to access the form that you fill out. This should be the most important factor in getting one of your desired hotels, and we will want to see how this timestamp affects your chances of various outcomes.

"What time did you submit the form?" will be the time that you successfully submitted the request. If things work the way we think they will, this should not matter but we still want to check that.

If you're interested, you can see the writeup we did from last year based on the data we collected from the forum.

The one that looks like this cci.onpeak.info/addRequest?q= will be the one that indicates when you got selected to go to the form.

cci.onpeak.info/thanks will correspond to when the form was successfully submitted.

It was my Internet Explorer connection that got in first.  I can't seem to find out how to get my access time.

In the History folder, it only says the most recent time and I accidentally opened it a second time.  That's the time it shows.

I do know I submitted at 12:06 after taking my time.  But, it doesn't show an exact time.

My best estimate for when I got in was around 12:03.

If anyone has a trick for getting more detailed history in IE, pass it on.

I chose 6 downtown and 0 non-downtown

Closest to convention center/waitlist.

I received an offer for the Old Town hotel.

I used Safari and i can't figure out how to get it to give me the exact time i got in. The cache just lists the time to the minute not to the second as far as i can tell. If anyone knows how to get an exact time on safari on a mac i'd be more specific.
It says i got in at 12:01pm
My picks were
Hard Rock Studio Room
Hilton San Diego Bayfront
Omni San Diego
SD Marriott Marquis and Marina
Manchester Grand Hyatt
Solmar

Didn't pick any non downtown hotels. Didn't want to take a chance they would skip my downtown choices if i picked any non downtown hotels.
I know they are not supposed to do that but i honestly don't really trust them very much so i didn't want to take a chance.
i also checked closest to the convention center and put me on the waitlist.

How do I do I do it for IE?
I think IE was a pain, I used a program called iecacheview, which I had to download.  It did not require installation, though.
The Firefox times are listed in the http header of the cache data.
The cci.onpeak.info/addRequest which includes the "q=", and the cci.onpeak.info/thanks will give you the times you are looking for.

Remove the word URL.  It's just about:cache.

No, that's what shows up IN about:cache. That's the resulting message.

We had 7 browsers going across 3 computers. First to get in was the Firefox browser on the PC. I think I found the right lines in the cache history:

Got in at 11:01:47
Submitted at 11:05:38

I think IE was a pain, I used a program called iecacheview, which I had to download.  It did not require installation, though.
The Firefox times are listed in the http header of the cache data.
The cci.onpeak.info/addRequest which includes the "q=", and the cci.onpeak.info/thanks will give you the times you are looking for.

I'm not adding software to my company's computer just to find my time.

I'm not adding software to my company's computer just to find my time.

That's entirely understandable. (Also, I tried an IE window to test and I could not figure out the access time even with iecacheview, but it was IE7.)

If anyone can't easily get to their cache for the times, don't stress it :) Rough information is tremendously helpful as well, and we will account for it being an estimate in the analysis.

Top tercile seems to be a minute or less.

(Edited to add:  a poll on Twitter has 48% of respondents saying they got in during the first two minutes.  So, results are consistent)

Through past experiences, I've learned not to freak out about the submission time.
There are so many known and unknown variables to the process we can only guess as to how the sort selection process truly goes.
Whether through my own submission or another's generosity, I have managed to get a great hotel every year and my times have never been good.

So, my recommendation is to not sweat it at this point.

silly question how do you see the time in which you got access to the forum?

Here's a bit more step-by-step for chrome. (I'm assuming you meant "form".)

Enter chrome://cache in the browser.

This should bring up a list of all kinds of stuff. Search for one that begins with https://cci.onpeak.info/addRequest?q=

In firefox you can see the timestamp in the cache window, in chrome you have to click on the url and it will take you to a window that has a lot of stuff, including the timestamp.

Quote
HTTP/1.1 302 Found
Content-Type: text/html; charset=utf-8
Date: Wed, 26 Apr 2017 16:19:33 GMT
Location: /addRequest
Server: nginx/1.10.1
Vary: Accept
X-Powered-By: Express
Content-Length: 66

Don't worry about the timezone at all, everything will be a bit after 9 PDT so I'll just look at the minutes and seconds. The timestamp is actually there in the url as well as en "epoch time," i.e. the number of seconds since 1-1-1970.

In this example, but with all the actual ids, X-ed out:

https://cci.onpeak.info/addRequest?q=XXXXXXXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXXXXXXXXXX&p=XXXXXXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXXXXXXXXXc&ts=1493223006&c=onpeak&e=cci17&rt=Queue&h=XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

I agree with you! Every year the sale seems to be different and the polls peole are seeing and comments with times of 9:02 and lower making people worry that they didn't get in isn't even a poll of everyone who participated once the sale so they are just a questionable to me.

I had two computers with the green man gone.  but on my second one I didn't click on that proceed to form button until after I was done with the first one.

We don't know what will happen due to the staggering of the notices.  Some people in the May 1st group may not want their rooms.  Maybe they'll be double booked because of group buying.  That would mean their rooms go back into the pool for the 2nd group.  This process never existed before.  We'll have to see.

We also don't know the impact of only sending the link to badgeholders, though it appears to me that plenty of non-badgeholders got the link anyway.

I was in at around 9:00:50. I chose six DT and none outside DT. Bayfront, Hilton Gaslamp, MGH, Embassy - 2 beds city, Embassy - 2 beds bayview, Westin. I did not opt for pay mega rate. I did opt for closest at any rate. I waitlisted. I asked for 2 rooms: I twin and 1 single.

I have a theory about the back-end tech driving this, and I don't think it necessarily matters what you check in your browser's cache as far as when your browser says the initial form page loaded, precisely.

What I mean is, I'll bet when 9:00 passed, the system randomized all waiting sessions into an order, and specifically, that "order" was a "Let Them in At..." time.

As the seconds passed, the back-end would open / allow each session at their assigned "LetThemInAt" time. I don't think latency or delay would hurt you, nor would it matter when you clicked on the "OK/Proceed" button to begin to fill out the form (hence whatever is "stamped" in your browser isn't necessarily split-second accurate.

As long as a session ultimately completed and a form was successfully submitted, the "LetThemInAt" value associated with that session / form from the beginning will likely be used as the ultimate sorting value for awarding rooms. NOT what happened on the browser side. Also, you get into all kinds of murky issues with people having their local computer clocks (and therefore browsers) set to slightly different times. (...and you could "trick" the system by having your browser send back an inaccurate time that the form loaded)

In other words, it is sorted on "This is the time we (the system) chose to let them in" versus "This is the time we heard back from their browser that they clicked OK and the form page successfully loaded"...which is what you're seeing in your cache, I believe.

Anyway, so that's why I think checking your browser cache isn't technically accurate (albeit maybe an OK very-loose rule-of-thumb).

This is just speculation on my part, but I think it is likely since it would be easier, more secure, and more elegantly coded if it were done in this manner.

This is my theory too based on their comments about "everyone is randomized at 9 am and then not randomized again." I think your place in the queue was assigned at 9 am and then you were just let in based on that place in the queue. I ended up digging through my cache folder on computer and finding when the chime (that notified you that your session had begun) had loaded and using that as my time.

That's very interesting. Is there a way to tell when the chime had loaded? I looked at my cache's form entry time and it was 9:00:41 but I could have sworn I heard the chime a few seconds sooner, like at 20-30 sec after 9am so I was a bit surprised to see the 41 sec number.

Also, did it seem like there was a bit of a delay after 9am hit? The queue-it time kept running for a few seconds past 9:00:00 before the sessions started to change.

Find the storage disk location for your browser's disk cache (for firefox, you can use the about:cache method in the address bar and then find the storage disk location under "Disk" and paste that into your folder address bar) and then find all the entries around 9 am (or your timezone) this morning in that folder. The bell toll sound effect is a file that's 123kb. You can open it in your browser to make sure it's it. Then, you can open it in text edit (or whatever else you have) and scroll down past the weird characters to the bottom where it should give you a time that it was first loaded along with some other info.

Didn't think about the chime... the form page loaded at 9:00:55 for me, but the chime was a full 10-12 seconds earlier than that... (also seemed like there was a brief delay after 9:00:00 before things started changing)

Yeah I just realized I won't be able to find the chime for the first submission since I used an incognito browser and I already closed it. But that's ok. We'll see what the results are like in a few days.

Thanks everyone for the latest comments, it's true that we won't know exactly what the times were, they will be somewhat approximate but that's fine, please don't let that stop you from posting your data (if you don't want to post it you can just PM it to me, I promise I won't judge, even if you used a Blackberry :) )

I used a brand new firefox profile for the window I used to fill out and submit the form, so the cache is pretty minimal. I still could not find the chime (I didn't even know there was one as I was at work and had the volume off.) I did see several other things load around the same time that I saw the addRequest?q= but they were around the same time or a few seconds apart.

I agree that the sorting would have been done on the server itself, (I really hope it was,) they wouldn't even have needed to do a sort at 9AM. Assuming the uuids they generated were uniform they could have just assigned the corresponding numeric rank at the time then used that to indicate when people were let in. At the bottom of the windows in the waiting room, there was a little green dot that would grey out and then turn green again every few seconds. My guess is that the page was refreshing periodically and when it refreshed after that uuids state was set to go then you would get to the form. My point is that the true ordering might only be knowable from the server itself, but we should be seeing a decent approximation to it, and that should be enough for us to find patterns (as it was last year.)

I think I mentioned this already, but (in a different window that I never clicked on when it was selected) I still saw the addRequest?q=  tag, so it didn't require the click to happen. I am quite curious to know what set the epoch time value in the tag.

The level of resolution we use for the results will depend in part on how much of the data is timestamped and how distributed it seems to be, last year we just summarized at a minute-level granularity, which was still very informative. We probably won't go lower than 30 seconds so some error and bias isn't too much of a problem if it's small enough.

/addRequest is the actual page for the form.  The "q=" or q-id number comes from queue-it as they process the queue and grant each session access to the form.  This number is used to track each individual session.  So any browser session that showed the form would have the /addRequest?q= entry in the cache even if you never clicked on any link because the browser had completed loading the page.

I feel like another piece of data we should be collecting is what bed type you requested. I would think that more people are selecting an option that provides 2 beds, than people who select an option for only one bed. It would be interesting to see how that plays into room assignments. Does someone who got in much later get a top choice DT room over someone who got in much earlier because they only requested 1 bed instead of 2?

I mention it because I got in at a later time (9:04:14), but only requested 1 bed. And I'm hoping that works to our advantage, haha.

I honestly doubt that matters except for the price they charge you, just because they're always careful to say "number of beds cannot be guaranteed", and, anecdotally, because my husband and I have been requesting 1 bed for 8 years and we've ended up in a room with only one bed exactly once. And that year I called the hotel when the reservations transferred and asked them to note we would like a king bed if at all possible. I've never bothered since.

I had thought about that, number of rooms and dates requested would be interesting as well. I didn't want to ask for too much since at some point it might get too personal.

but only requested 1 bed. And I'm hoping that works to our advantage, haha.

At some other conventions, hotels will have a shortage of 1K or 2Q rooms, based on the preferences of their particular attendee group. I have never minded having a second unused bed in my hotel room but some people do, because I have heard them complaining loudly at checkin!  Maybe we're in an echo chamber in this forum, but I figured that among SDCC attendees, multiple beds HAS to be more popular than single beds, and it seems like hotel inventory is usually split pretty evenly.

TL;DR I am also hoping that a request for 1 bed works to our advantage  ::)

I wouldn't necessarily say you're SOL. Time will tell I guess, but I'm not sure this forum would represent a typical sample of all submissions. Most are hard core about the Con (like me) and tech savvy (not like me). I'm guessing many that you see posted here with very early submission times had multiple browsers (not all) and well prepared.

For those interested in last year's data and the success rate by when you were allowed in:

http://www.friendsofcc.com/forum/index.php?topic=6086.msg156864#msg156864

While it may be different this year, this summarizes:

In within a minute -->  Almost everyone got what they picked
In from 1 to 2 minutes --->  Most got downtown, about 2/3rd got what they picked
In from 2 to 3 minutes --->  about 1/4 got what they picked about 1/2 got downtown

After that, chances for downtown dropped substantially.  TFor the people who got in after four minutes no one got a downtown hotel.

The above was based on initial allocations and not the waitlist.

Of course, there are many different variables this year.  The staggering of the confirmations could mean something positive if they are re-distributing returned hotels immediately rather than saving them for the waitlist.  Having some hotels unavailable to us could mean something else.

I'm really worried since I'm seeing a lot of people get in under 2 minutes. At 9:02:36, I feel like it's not really a good time.  My stomach has been hurting since Wednesday and I ache all over.   :(

Two forms (me and my sister):

Form 1
What time were you given access to the form? 9:00:51
What time did you submit the form?  ~9:03:00 (my cache no longer has this data, so just a guess)

How many downtown hotels did you choose (0-6) 6
How many non-downtown hotels did you choose (0-6) 0

What option did you pick if your preferred hotels weren't available? closest to the convention center
What waitlist preference did you pick? yes

Form 2
What time were you given access to the form? 9:01:48
What time did you submit the form?  9:04:29

How many downtown hotels did you choose (0-6) 6
How many non-downtown hotels did you choose (0-6) 0

What option did you pick if your preferred hotels weren't available? closest to the convention center
What waitlist preference did you pick? yes

BTW, in my cache, it wasn't listed as cci.onpeak.info/addRequest.js. Rather it was something like d3oybw1d2gwk.cloudfront.net/comic/js/addRequest.js

UPDATE
If you get a notification, what group were you in? May 1st, 9:23am
What was your result? #1 choice - Omni

Thanks again everyone for posting!

I had to laugh when I saw the post from [member=4229]Satam[/member] , a couple times last year when I was going down the spreadsheet I had, which was sorted by user name, I would be skimming such that the names would run together. The name Saban was right above Satam and my brain would merge them and I would think wow, who signed up under the name Satan?

If I remember correctly, it was the Hilton Gaslamp.

If I remember correctly, it was the Hilton Gaslamp.

Come to think of it, I had the same issue, with the same hotel. I picked my hotel #1 and the form added the hotel as expected; then I attempted to pick Hilton Gaslamp as hotel #2, and the webform wouldn't recognize the selection. For a minute I thought maybe that hotel was sold out (~ to PN selling out) but then I tried hotel #3 and the form accepted it right away.  Then I tried Hilton Gaslamp again to no avail. After that I added hotels 4,5,6 no problem. Then I tried Hilton Gaslamp again, the form still would not add it. Finally I refreshed the page (fingers crossed) and only then would the form add Hilton Gaslamp to the list.  Somewhat surprisingly, the form retained all the other information, and I just bumped Hilton Gaslamp up the list to the spot where I wanted it to be.

I was too scared to refresh so I just swapped the Hilton Gaslamp with the HardRock, which was not originally on my list.

Maybe with all of that trouble, Hilton Gaslamp will be easier for others to get! If they were able to put it into their forms...

I wouldn't have refreshed either, but it's risky moves like that gave [member=2835]straightline3[/member] the win in our big fantasy football competition :)

Just to see, I opened up a session late into the sale to see if they had removed any hotels or said anything different and it still let me add some of the top hotels, I don't think I tried the Hilton Gaslamp.

That's strange... Hilton Gaslamp was #4 for me and I didn't have any issues with it on the drop down menu. My mom and friend also listed it and didn't mention any problems either...

They've never asked for the ID in the past. My guess is they're asking for it mainly for statistics purposes, or possibly a duplicate detector. But the fact that it was optional leads me to believe it won't really be used for either. Perhaps it's a trial run to see if it's feasible to require a SDCC ID for 2018?

I think those are the most likely things, my guess is they are heading and that direction and want to socialize it.

Thanks once more to everyone who has entered numbers, once you find out your results please go back and edit your post or just make a new one in this thread, whatever is easiest. If you would rather send me a pm that's great too, as long as it is in any language that google can translate.

We really want to paint as complete of a picture as we can, so I hope you will share even if it isn't the result you are hoping for, or even if it's a something completely predictable. Feel free to share anything else that happened, for example one member mentioned having trouble selecting the Hilton Gaslamp and their mentioning it caught the eye of someone else who had the same issue.

[UPDATE ] We now have a google form that you can use if you prefer. Though if you have already entered some information in this thread, indicate something at the beginning of the form that we can use to match it up, like usernameXYZ or usernameXYZ's friend.

Same here:  Went straight from the waiting room screen to the "tone" sound, with no running man page loaded (even though it seemed to happen at about 30 seconds after 9:00 - not immediately at the stroke of the hour, for sure.

I hope that means I get my top pick. We'll soon see...

I spoke to someone from on peak because of a glitch and they said it was a lottery. But I am wondering if there's any other weights on the algorithm. Like I can't imagine a hotel would prefer someone who is only staying Thursday-Saturday over someone arriving Monday and leaving the following week.

In the main hotel thread, there are a couple theories about OnPeak, given near identical form entry times, choosing those with longer stays over those with shorter stays (e.g. Tuesday through Sunday as opposed to, say Thursday to Sunday).

It's probably too late this year, but maybe next year an additional question can be what days you chose to book.

I really don't think this is true. Onpeak would have to add another layer to their algorithm and for no real reason. Onpeak doesn't make more money, the hotels do, so I don't think onpeak would bother adding more complication. They have enough issues already!

And not that anecdotes are proof, but we have never requested more than the 4 nights, even back with travel planners, and we've received the MMM and the Bayfront, our first choices.

Yeah, I don't think I buy it either, but I think it still would be nice to have that datapoint, just to see if there is any sort of correlation. Personally, my anecdote matches yours: I've only ever requested 5 days / 4 nights, and I've always been able to get a hotel within 0.5 miles of the convention center.

Speaking of datapoints, I'm also wondering if it would be a value-add to ask if you submitted multiple forms with the same mailing address or email or same names. We're hearing cases of people getting in before 9:02 or even 9:01 and didn't get a hotel allocation. One possibility is that they were marked as duplicate. We're still not 100% sure how OnPeak's duplication detection works.

Good idea to add it, of course I want to stress that people should only share whatever they are comfortable with. As I think has been mentioned, this comes up from time to time but sometimes there's a feeling that longer stays are better and other times that shorter stays are better. My personal feeling on it is that I always enter longer stays, if it helps then ok, but even if it doesn't it is trivial to shorten the reservation if I need to.

Or you can post in this thread. If you were on firefox or chrome and can check your cache that's awesome, instructions are at the start of this thread. If you have already entered some information in this thread and use the google form this time, please indicate something at the beginning of the form that we can use to match it up, like usernameXYZ or usernameXYZ's friend.

You can also send me a pm. I am completely and boringly trustworthy. Like that time [member=3906]dcuodust[/member] privately confessed to me that he hates Tim Horton's? Never mentioned it to a soul.

Thanks again to everyone who has posted so far, and to everyone waiting for tomorrow's update, best of luck and get what sleep you can.

The impression I got when I was talking to the OnPeak rep is that CCI and the hotels call the shots as far as how they want to handle the hotel distribution and OnPeak just provides the platform to do it

But what does that even mean, "call the shots?" There is no way CCI micromanages how hotels are distributed. CCI handles making sure the hotels are secured in the block, of course, but beyond that I really doubt they are involved. Why would they hire a large company like OP to handle hotels and then oversee it themselves? Remember, CCI is the ~company that thought it could handle badge sales on its own and then had to go crawling back to Expo Logic at the last minute.

The first group and ya after reading all the other peoples times i figured we would end up with zippo. They must have had other criteria in who got what.  I have heard a few other instances where people with later times ended up with closer hotels then others.

Definitely an outlier. I'm actually more surprised that you were notified in group 1, everyone else that was in that group had a form access time around the 1 to 1 and a half minute mark or earlier. (The time you submitted the form didn't matter.)
